Free Walking Tours in the Non-Stop City of Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is a great city to explore on foot

Explore Tel Aviv’s extraordinary history and most famous landmarks by embarking on one of the many guided walking tours the city has to offer.

Tel Aviv offers stunning architectural treasures, like the 4,000 Bauhaus-style buildings in the White City, bustling markets that transform into open air parties at dusk and neighbourhoods with ever-visible links to past empires. To experience what the city has to offer, there are walking tours for every type of visitor to the city.

Sample Israeli cuisine at Carmel Market

The Carmel Market Tasting Tour takes place in the city’s largest outdoor market, referred to by the locals as ‘Shuk HaCarmel’. Taking the sites around the Kerem – Tel Aviv’s Yemenite Quarter – the tour explores Israel’s food culture through the market’s history and illustrates how different Middle Eastern cultures have influenced Israeli cuisine . Visitors are introduced to the flavours typical of the region and invited to sample local dishes and tasty bites of homemade bread, falafel in pita and stuffed baklava from the market vendors along the way.

Meeting Point: 58 Allenby Street

The food culture and flavours that are typical of the region can be sampled during a tour of Shuk HaCarmel in the Yemenite quarter

Explore Neve Tzedek, one of Tel Aviv’s oldest districts

Saunter down the cobbled streets of Neve Tzedek , Tel Aviv’s first Jewish neighbourhood outside of Jaffa . Starting on the southern tip of Rothschild Boulevard, the walk explores the neighbourhood’s principal streets and its transformation from an enclave of charming roads and European-style apartments into one of the city’s most fashionable districts. The tour includes a visit to the Nahum Gutman Museum , a historic landmark in one of the first houses built in Neve Tzedek. The museum displays artwork by Gutman, a Serbian-born painter and sculptor who emigrated to Israel at the age of seven. Many of his sculptures and colourful mosaics are scattered across public spaces in Tel Aviv, including a fountain at the south end of Rothschild Boulevard depicting 4,000 years of Tel Aviv history along with Jaffa’s inclusion in biblical tales.

Meeting Point: 11 Rothschild Boulevard

The main streets in Neve Tzedek show the neighbourhood’s transformation from an enclave of charming roads into one of the city’s most fashionable districts

Learn about the city’s Bauhaus heritage

The White City tour includes a visit to the many Bauhaus buildings lining Rothschild Boulevard and its surrounding streets. Tel Aviv, also known as the White City for its white facades, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The 4,000 buildings, designed by the architects who settled in the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1930s after fleeing the spread of Nazism across Europe, are considered the largest group of Bauhaus-style buildings anywhere in the world. The White City tour covers the buildings’ history and traces their origins, construction and restoration and explores their current use as private apartment blocks.

Stops on the tour include the Independence Hall, where Israel’s Declaration of Independence was signed; the Great Synagogue, which began construction in 1922 and was completed in 1926, and explorations of some of the most prominent works of architecture, including the cluster of skyscrapers lining Rothschild Boulevard.

Spanning 10km, the guided circuit runs through many places of interest in the city, including Habima Square, the city’s cultural hub, Rabin Square, which houses the city hall building, Sarona Market, a culinary destination inspired by leading worldwide markets, and the beach promenade by the Mediterranean sea.

Immerse yourself in Jaffa’s rich past

Discover the ancient treasures of Jaffa , a port city located south of Tel Aviv, on a two-hour walking tour. The district dates back more than 4,000 years, during which it fell under the rule of a multitude of empires, including the Romans, the Ottomans and the British. The tour includes a visit to Andromeda’s Rock where, according to Greek mythology, Andromeda was sacrificed to the sea monster, and the Jaffa Lighthouse above Jaffa Port, which was built by French engineers during Ottoman rule in 1865 in a bid to improve the port facilities. Though a free tour, tips are expected at the end of the walk.

Meeting Point: Clock Tower, Old Jaffa

The tour includes a visit to Jaffa’s most recognisable sites, such as the Jaffa Lighthouse (pictured) above the old Port

Walk along the Independence Trail

Launched in 2018 to celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday, Tel Aviv’s Independence Trail is a one-kilometre walk that includes 10 historical sites, each marking a chapter in the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Inspired by the Freedom Trail in Boston , the path starts with the creation of Tel Aviv in 1909 and ends with the Establishment of Israel in 1948. Memorable stops along the way includes the mosaic of Jaffa’s history by artist Nahum Gutman, the Great Synagogue, the statue of the city’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff , and his former home and Independence Hall. There are maps available and a self-guided audio-visual tour is available for download on the Independence Trail app (on iOS and Android) and includes free admission to all sites along the route. Tablets are also available to rent (for a small fee) from the information centre opposite Rothschild 11. The path is lit up for guests planning a trip after sunset.

The Best Free Virtual Tours of Israel

City of David

There are times when it’s impossible or not convenient to travel to Israel, like now, when there’s a war going on. If you already bought a flight ticket and had to postpone or completely cancel your trip, it’s probably frustrating. But you can use this time to learn more about Israel from the comfort of your home and understand Israel better before coming here. You can watch recommended movies about Israel , read interesting books, and check out some free virtual tours of Israel.

In some cases, you can get even more information from virtual tours than from touring the place in reality. That’s because you can explore the sites at your own pace, focus on what really interests you, and won’t get distracted by the heat, the cold, or other people walking around the place.

Here are some of the best free virtual tours of Israel today.

Table of Contents

Virtual tour of the City of David

The City of David is the most ancient part of Jerusalem, where you can feel the Bible come to life. This is where the city existed in the time of the First Jewish Temple, in the time of King David, King Solomon, and King Hezekiah. When you come to Israel, this place should definitely be on your list. But until then, they have a beautiful free virtual tour.

Their virtual tour includes commentary, written descriptions of points of interest, and videos that show how things looked in the ancient past. There are even points where you can read phrases from the Bible that are connected to the locations. The only downside is that you must subscribe to their newsletter to view it.

The virtual tour covers all the sites of the City of David, including Warren’s Shaft, King David’s Palace, the Siloam Tunnel, and the Givati Parking Lot, the newest area excavated in the City of David. It even covers part of the Davidson Center Jerusalem Archeological Park!

Click here for the free virtual tour

Virtual tour of the Israel Museum

The Israel Museum is the leading museum in Israel, with the most comprehensive collection of Bible time archeology. Apart from the archeology wing, the Israel Museum has an extensive art exhibition and changing exhibitions focusing on different aspects of Israel.

The museum offers a virtual tour of its galleries through the Google Arts & Culture Street View platform. You can virtually “walk” around the exhibitions and see the different displays, but it’s very hard – and in some cases impossible – to read the signs that explain what you are seeing.

There are also other virtual tours on the Israel Museum’s website. Some of them lead to an insecure link, while others, like the Maimonides Exhibition , the Veiled Women of the Holy Land Exhibition , and the To Go Exhibition , are powered by 4panorama and are actually quite good! You can clearly read the signs in the exhibitions, get “up close” to the displays, and view videos showing the story of each display. The problem is that in some of the tours, the description inside is only in Hebrew. But in some, there is also English, so it’s okay.

If you want to enjoy commentary of the main museum exhibitions, you can book me for a virtual guided tour of the museum. We’ll “walk” around the museum using Google’s Street View platform, and I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the museum’s highlights. Contact me at [email protected] for a price quote and more information.

Virtual tour of Yad Vashem

Yad Vashem is the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. It’s a huge center that includes memorial monuments, a history museum, and other spaces that focus on researching the Holocaust. You can find a lot of online resources about the Holocaust on Yad Vashem’s website , but I want to focus on their free virtual tour.

The virtual tour doesn’t enter the Yad Vashem Museum. Instead, it takes you to an online space where you can explore six different exhibitions, each focusing on a different aspect of the Holocaust – life in the Ghetto, Nazi ideology, the Beginning of the Systematic Murder and its Spread to Occupied Poland, the Europe-wide murder of Jews, Liberation and a New Life, and Historical Figures from the Holocaust. Each exhibition has several videos that tell more about each topic. If you’re interested in the Holocaust, this is definitely an enriching resource!

Yad Vashem also uploaded a fascinating virtual tour to YouTube, which uses the 4panorma platform to explore the different exhibition halls. The tour is about an hour long and can be viewed here:

Virtual tour of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Another top-notch museum in Israel is the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, which displays both international and local Israeli art. The museum offers free virtual tours of some of its changing galleries. The best virtual tours of the museum are the 360-degree tours, but not all of them are perfect. In most of them, you can clearly read what is written on the explanation signs, but in some, the signs are too small to view.

Click here for the free virtual tours

Inside one of the galleries of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Virtual tour of Israel by Taglit

Taglit, or Birthright Israel , is an educational tourism program for young Jewish people in the Jewish diaspora. The program lets them travel to Israel free of charge and explore the country’s highlights. During the Coronavirus pandemic, Taglit created a fun interactive virtual tour powered by Eko that shows you the best of Israel from the comfort of your home.

The tour is an interactive video that lets you choose where your guide will take you. It is guided by tour guide Navee Cohen and other tour guides who join him at the different sites. The footage is fantastic, but the explanations are pretty basic. I think it’s meant more to give you a taste of Israel and less to explain each point. Also, there’s no option to skip forward, so you’ll have to make time to view the entire tour.

My virtual tours of Israel (not free)

If you prefer a private guided virtual tour of Israel, I’ll be happy to show you the highlights of Israel through a Zoom or Google Meet meeting. On my virtual tours, I guide you using platforms such as Google Street View and Google Earth and show original photos and videos I’ve taken during my travels in Israel. I’m a certified Israeli tour guide and would love to share my knowledge about the different sites and topics.

The virtual tours are usually one hour long, starting from 280 ILS (around 70 USD) for one group. Contact me at [email protected] for a quote, availability, and more information.

Here are some of my top virtual tours, but you can request any topic that interests you.

Temple Mount virtual tour

On this virtual tour, we’ll talk about the history of Temple Mount, the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions connected to it, and understand a bit about the Status Quo from 1967.

This tour will include only images of Temple Mount, without videos or Google Street View. It’s more of a lecture and less of a tour.

Dome of the Rock on Temple Mount

The Via Dolorosa virtual tour

On this virtual tour, we’ll virtually walk along the Via Dolorosa – the traditional route Jesus took to the crucifixion point. We’ll view the different stations and also learn about the history and stories behind the Via Dolorosa.

This tour will include images and a walkthrough using Google Street View.

Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967 virtual tour

This online lecture will tell Jerusalem’s story from the 1948 Independence War to the 1967 Six-Day War. We’ll talk about the fall of the Jewish Quarter, the life along the border from 1948 to 1967, and the unification of Jerusalem after 1967.  Did East Jerusalem really unite with the West?

This tour will include images and a few parts with Google Street View. It’s more of a lecture and less of a tour.

View of Old Jerusalem from the top of Tower of David

Israel Museum Highlights virtual tour

On this virtual tour, we’ll virtually walk through the main exhibitions of the Israel Museum and talk about its highlights, focusing on the archeology wing. This is an excellent tour for those interested in ancient archeology and history.

This tour will include images and a walk-through using Google’s Street View platform.

When it’s impossible to travel to Israel, it’s the perfect time to delve into the virtual tours of Israel. Sometimes, you can learn much more from a virtual tour than an actual tour of the site because there are no distractions, and you can focus more on the information that interests you. I hope you’ll have a good time exploring the free virtual tours of the Israel Museum, the City of David, Yad Vashem, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. They’re all interesting!

Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday in a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago that anti-Israel protesters “have a point.”

Joe Biden at DNC: Anti-Israel protesters 'have a point' Back to video

“Those protesters out on the street. They have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides,” the 81-year-old told the United Center crowd on the first night of the convention after being introduced by First Lady Jill Biden and their daughter, Ashley Biden.

Four demonstrators were arrested after several dozen anti-Israel protesters breached an outer fence line on the north side of the indoor arena in the city’s Near West Side on Monday evening, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

The protesters attempted to disrupt Biden’s speech but were pushed back by Chicago police in riot gear, backed by U.S. Capitol police.

“Officers put on gas masks as some protesters tried to bring down a second fence set up in front of police,” according to the Associated Press.

“At no point was the inner perimeter breached,” the Chicago Police stated. “There was no threat to any protectees.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker told CNN that the breach was “brief.”

Although anti-Israel organizers said they expected some 20,000 protesters to descend on the Windy City for the DNC, only a few thousand seemed to have shown up, the AP reported, and reporters covering the event shared photos of fields of unclaimed antisemitic signs.

Footage and images circulated on social media purporting to show protesters openly supporting Hamas, a U.S.-designated terror organization. Protesters also accused Biden and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running for president, of supporting genocide, the AP reported.

At least one protester was recorded waving a Hezbollah flag, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

Inside the United Center during Biden’s speech, audience members unfurled a banner reading: “Stop arming Israel.” A man is seen trying to rip it out of their hands. After the audience saw the banner, they began chanting, “We love Joe.”

“We’ll keep working to bring hostages home and end the war in Gaza and bring peace and security to the Middle East. As you know, I wrote a peace treaty for Gaza. A few days ago I put forward a proposal that brought us closer to doing that than we’ve done since Oct. 7,” Biden said.

“We’re working around the clock—my secretary of state—to prevent a wider war and reunite hostages with their families and surge humanitarian health and food assistance into Gaza now, to end the civilian suffering of the Palestinian people and finally deliver a ceasefire and end this war,” the president continued.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday urged the Hamas terror group to accept the latest proposal for a ceasefire-for-hostages deal with Israel, following meetings with senior officials in Jerusalem.

“In a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today, he confirmed to me that Israel accepts the bridging proposal, that he supports it. It’s now incumbent on Hamas to do the same,” said Blinken.

“What I would say to Hamas and to its leadership is: If it genuinely cares about the Palestinian people that it purports to somehow represent, then it will say yes to this agreement, and it will work on clear understandings on how to implement it,” he told reporters.

“The single quickest, best, most effective way to relieve the terrible suffering of the Palestinians that was instigated by Hamas’s attack on Oct. 7 and the war that ensued is to complete this agreement,” he added.

Blinken arrived in Egypt on Tuesday ahead of negotiations on the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

Back in Chicago, families of abductees with American citizenship met with members of the Harris campaign, including Ilan Goldenberg, who was named last week its liaison to the Jewish community.

According to Channel 12, Goldenberg reiterated Harris’s commitment to Israel’s security alongside the efforts to reach a ceasefire deal and return the hostages. The meeting was described as good, with the positions expressed corresponding to those of the Biden administration.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a member of the progressive “Squad” and a harsh critic of Israel, made the case for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, against the ticket of Republican nominee Donald Trump and vice presidential choice Ohio Sen. JD Vance.

Harris “is working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and bringing hostages home,” Ocasio-Cortez said to cheers from the crowd.

Delaware Rabbi Michael Beals, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Shalom in Wilmington, whom Biden has affectionately called his rabbi and who has campaigned for the president, recited the priestly blessing in Hebrew to conclude the first night of the DNC.

The convention is in Chicago until Thursday, with events at the United Center and McCormick Place.
