RFK Jr. plans to appear in court in 2 more ballot access cases next week

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to appear in Pennsylvania and New York courts next week to defend himself in lawsuits, brought by Democrat-aligned groups, that challenge the validity of voter signatures he was required to gather to make the ballot as an independent candidate.

"Mr. Kennedy will now be testifying in court next week in Harrisburg, PA, on Tuesday and Mineola, NY, on Wednesday or Thursday to defend ballot access challenges," campaign spokeswoman Stefanie Spear told ABC News in a statement.

Spear added that RFK Jr.'s campaign has canceled its event in Chicago on Sunday and Monday next week in preparation of the court appearances.

The Pennsylvania case mirrors one that Kennedy lost this month in upstate New York, as it argues he listed on his nominating petition forms an address where he doesn’t live.

Plaintiffs in the Long Island case argue that contractors hired by the Kennedy campaign to gather signatures engaged in fraudulent activity, citing a New York Times piece in May that quoted voters who said Kennedy-aligned petitioners who approached them folded over the page to conceal Kennedy's name.

"We should make it very clear that nobody wanted this to happen and did everything they could to make it stop happening," William F. Savino, a lawyer representing Kennedy in the case, told ABC News Thursday.

"Nobody wanted improper signatures, and we had the luxury of so many extra signatures, there was no incentive to bend the rules or fold the paper," Savino added.

Test Drive: Mid-sized 10.9m Scania Touring

Tim Deakin

While mid-sized, full-weight coaches form a niche part of the market, competition is keen for buyers’ money in this segment. Scania has added further to what is available with its Touring at 10.9m, complementing existing 12.1m two-axle and 13.7m tri-axle models.

The newcomer sits alongside similar-length Scania Irizar products. While Scania acknowledges that none will sell at a rate equalling that of their longer sisters, it believes that the mid-sized coaches each have their places. In the 10.9m Touring’s case, that is as a vehicle that gives a good amount of metal and amenities for the price.

10 stock short Tourings have been delivered, two of which are sold. Brent Thomas Coaches of Tonypandy was the first to take delivery; its example is a 42-seater with a floor-mounted toilet. Scania also has available straight 45-seaters.

Chassis for the Touring range are shipped to Higer in China for bodying. The coaches then proceed to Antwerp. There, interior fittings including seats are installed. While none of the stock 10.9m examples are PSVAR compliant, achieving that is planned for later batches. The additional door will be fitted at the build stage, but the lift and destination display equipment will be added in Belgium.

Scania Touring 10.8m interior

“We are confident that there is a market for this size Touring,” says UK Retail Sales Manager Lee Wale.

“It comes with all the elements of a full-size coach and it is cost effective. Because of that, we believe it will suit private hire and tour work – along with corporate duties, for which its length is ideal.”

As part of Scania’s standard offering to retail coach customers, two years’ repair and maintenance coverage is applied to the 10.9m Touring. That can be extended to suit the purchaser, while Scania Financial Services can support buyers via its usual channels. Days before the first coach was delivered to Brent Thomas, it was made available for a routeone test drive.

10.9m has lots in common with other Scania Touring models

As effectively a shortened version of the 12.1m Touring, the mid-sized model has a lot in common with it. There are also some minor differences, but nothing that is overly noticeable by, or relevant to, passengers.

The test coach is mounted on the K 360 IB chassis, with a front beam axle. Power is from the 9.3-litre DC09 engine developing 360bhp and 1,700Nm of torque. That is harnessed by the Opticruise eight-speed automated manual gearbox. A retarder forms part of the driveline.

Scania (Great Britain) insisted that the toilet in the 10.9m Touring was floor mounted to maximise luggage space. Immediately adjacent, and behind the offside rear wheels, is a powered continental door. As a result, the underfloor area between the axles is entirely clear for luggage. Two manually operated, parallel-lifting doors are fitted on each side.

Scania Touring 10.9m underfloor area

A 310-litre fuel tank with dual fillers sits over the front axle. On the shortest Touring, the AdBlue filler is ahead of the nearside rear wheels.

A wheelbase of 4.90m guarantees good manoeuvrability. However, as all the heavy bits of the 12.1m Touring form part of the mid-sized example, the newcomer is not a lightweight coach. As tested, it tips the scales at 13,036kg unladen and has a 19,500kg GVW.

Well-specified mid-sized motor suits a variety of work

Scania has specified a variety of upholsteries on the first stock coaches, extending from largely moquette-based to full leather. The Brent Thomas example comes with the latter on its Kiel Avance seats, and their black trim imparts a restrained feel to the saloon.

The seats are to a high specification in addition to their leather finish. They have three-point belts, footrests, drop-down tables and magazine nets, while aisle positions have lateral adjustment. USB points are mounted within the side walls.

Dark flooring is fitted, albeit not wood effect. The sunken aisle comes with a carpet. At the front, four steps take passengers to the platform and two more to the gangway. All are edged in yellow. The courier seat is quite bulky and its base is not locked in position when stowed.

Proceeding along the coach, there is a step in the gangway at around the two-thirds mark. The rear row of seats has only two positions, with the space between those and the toilet occupied by a small servery fitted by AD Coach Systems.

While the floor-mounted toilet has debuted in the 10.9m model, it can also now be specified on the Touring at other lengths.

Two monitors are fitted as standard, coupled to a Bosch entertainment system incorporating a DVD player.

A roof-mounted air-conditioning unit works in tandem with perimeter radiators; climate control is fitted, but an auxiliary coolant heater is not. There is a fridge in the dash.

Cab is well specified – and well heated and cooled

The cab area is standard Scania. As a result it is well laid out, although the tachograph head unit is low to the floor. Storage for smaller items is good, but it’s likely that the driver’s bag will need to go into one of the twin lockable front sections of the luggage racks.

Gullwing mirrors are complemented by a lower-level offside repeater. The signalling window is also powered and heated. Scope for adjustment of the steering wheel is good, and it additionally can be laid almost flat to create space for larger drivers to enter and exit the Isringhausen seat. That comes with the usual refinements, while adjacent to it are a hands-free microphone and a map light.

One thing that the driver will not be is cold. In addition to cab climate control, beneath the seat is an independent heater blower. Meanwhile, a moderately warm day saw the cab temperature brought down quickly by the air-conditioning.

View of cab area in Brent Thomas coach

On the dash is a display that feeds to the spoiler-mounted camera when reverse is engaged, and to a camera above the continental door when that is open.

Scania has mastered what some OEMs cannot and positioned the handbrake lever where it is easily accessible to the tallest drivers.

Forward visibility from the Touring is good thanks to its recessed A-pillars. To the side things are a little more difficult for a tall driver or one who sits further back. The B-pillar is slightly in the way at some junctions, and the signalling window frame can sit in the eyeline.

Shorter Touring is as capable on the road as its bigger sisters

The five-cylinder DC09 is ample for the short Touring. Gears are selected via a rotary stalk. The coach initially used first to pull away but later settled on second. Opticruise moves rapidly between ratios and speed is gained rapidly. Coupled to a highly manoeuvrable chassis, that means the coach can push on well along winding rural A-roads.

A power mode is available by further twisting the stalk when in drive. It causes gears to be held longer, but there was no need to utilise it during the test. Scania can disable it should the customer require.

The DC09 revs a little harder than larger engines, but it is also happy to work within the torque band when the cruise control is set. At 50mph, eighth gear can be held at 1,100rpm – where peak torque begins – and pickup is prompt from those speeds. At 62mph, the tachometer shows a shade below 1,400rpm.

Scania Touring 10.9m engine bay

Roadholding is good and there is no sign of the ‘nodding’ that can sometimes be apparent on short-wheelbase coaches. Noise levels are also impressively low.

The dash display can impart a great deal of information on both the vehicle and, to a lesser extent, the driver’s performance. Monitoring is provided to the operator free of charge for 10 years by Scania; an important part of that shows the amount of fuel wasted while idling.

More useful consumption is also detailed. On a largely motorway section, the 10.9m Touring turned in 12.7mpg. When rural running to and from Retford and through Blyth was added, the overall return was 11.5mpg – both of which are impressive for what is a heavyweight coach.

10.9m Touring is a worthwhile addition to the Scania range

Although the 10.9m Touring is in a niche part of the market, the number of competitors that are also present demonstrates that there is business to be done with the right product. One of Scania’s aims for the newcomer is for it to provide a cost-effective proposition in this sector.

It is established that having the Touring bodied in China brings a price point benefit, but from a passenger’s point of view that is not relevant. Most of the saloon fittings – including the seats – are added in Europe, and for the driver, the chassis and driveline are no different to other Scania products.

Rear view of white Scania coach

The typical Swedish refinement and low noise levels are both also present. The coach’s interior trim lends itself to corporate work, which the size and capacity of the 10.9m Touring will eminently suit.

But 42 or 45 seats will also satisfy some demand in the private hire, day trip and tour sectors.

When combined with a good amount of luggage space and a keen pricing point, that makes the new addition to Scania’s range perhaps more versatile than would first be thought.

Harris to embark on a seven-state campaign blitz with her VP pick

Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump.

It will be a critical week for Harris, who is rushing to introduce herself to voters with just three months until Election Day. It will also be the first time she will appear with her yet-to-be-announced running mate.

Starting Tuesday, Harris will campaign across seven swing states over five days, one of the heaviest weeks of campaign-related travel in the general election.

Her team has vetted six contenders to be her running mate: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Walz, Shapiro and Kelly each met separately with Harris on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the meetings.

Harris is set to appear alongside her running mate for the first time Tuesday in Philadelphia , where the pair will kick off the cross-country tour.

Her travel swing is a stark contrast to the pace of Trump and President Joe Biden. Trump has delivered remarks in 10 states since the June 27 debate, while Biden traveled to campaign stops in eight states during the final 24 days of his candidacy. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time.

Harris will visit five states that she and Biden flipped blue in 2020: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. She will also make stops in North Carolina, which Biden lost by a slim margin, and Nevada, where Democrats won narrowly.

The trip highlights the generational gap between Harris compared with Biden and Trump, Democratic allies said.

Biden’s candidacy was consistently plagued by voter concerns about his age, and his final weeks as the presumptive nominee were punctuated by a stream of congressional Democrats urging him to pass the torch to a new generation.

“Age really does matter” when it comes to a candidate’s ability to commit to long campaign trips, said Amanda Renteria, who was the national political director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

Harris, 59, is a generation younger than Trump, 78, and Biden, 81.

In 2020, Biden was the oldest presidential winner in history. If elected, Trump would be the oldest sitting president by the end of his term.

“It is amazing what candidates can do when they’re traveling around, and you don’t know what time it is, and you don’t know what day it is, but everyone’s in it,” she said. “And you can only sustain that for so long. And when you’re at the age of Trump, I don’t know how you keep up with that.”

Trump is scheduled this week to hold a rally Friday and deliver remarks at a dinner in Montana, a state he won in 2020 with 56.9% of the vote. He is also scheduled to hold a fundraiser Saturday in Colorado, which Biden won by a similar margin in 2020. Neither state is considered to be a swing state.

Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips.

"In this cycle, President Trump has by far visited more battleground states, held more rallies, held more fundraisers, done more interviews and engaged with local reporters," Cheung said of Trump, who launched his campaign more than a year and a half before Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

"Kamala Harris can’t even give a simple media interview since she was anointed the Democrat nominee," he continued. Harris has not held a sit-down media interview since Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, though she has answered journalists' questions in media gaggles.

In the days after Biden's widely panned June debate in Georgia, his campaign was in damage control mode. Biden spoke at a North Carolina rally and traveled to fundraisers in New York, New Jersey and Virginia before he held a rally in Wisconsin.

His next campaign trips were to Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada, the last of which was cut short when he contracted Covid. Days later, he dropped out of the race.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Abhi Rahman said that if Biden had stayed in the race, "I'm sure that there would have been blitzes like this, as well."

But now "there's definitely a lot of desire to make sure that the vice president is defining herself and her VP before Republicans get a chance to," Rahman said. "So the timing of this definitely goes with that."

When Biden was the presumptive nominee, the Trump campaign aimed many of its attacks at his cognitive ability, leaning into voters' concerns about his age. But with Harris' being a generation younger than Trump, Republicans have had to pivot their approach.

"I think she's making a point of her relative youth and vitality," said Bill Galston, a Brookings Institution fellow and official in President Bill Clinton's administration. "It's a point that she doesn't have to talk about because she's just showing it."

Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

"I think the fact that she's willing and able to do this many events in a small amount of time is something that can make a real difference, especially when we're less than a hundred days out" from the election, Cavalier said.

Traveling for campaign events can create more opportunities for local media coverage, accelerate fundraising and identify potential future volunteers, said Eric Jaye, a Democratic consultant at Storefront Political Media, a campaign consulting firm. But most important, candidates are activating thousands of "micro-influencers" at rallies, he said.

"They're all holding up their phones, and they're all publishers," he said, adding that when rallygoers post pictures of themselves with a candidate, "that will go out to their networks, which is an endorsement for their networks."

"If you can get 10,000 people to share that they trust Kamala Harris, that has an impact as a form of media and communication in and of itself," Jaye said. "So essentially these are conventions of micro-influencers."

Already, the Harris campaign has touted a groundswell of volunteer support, noting in a memo released Saturday that over the previous 12 days, volunteers had placed 2.3 million phone calls and knocked on 172,000 doors.

The seven-state tour “shows that she has a ton of energy,” Renteria said. “It shows that her campaign is ready to go and is thinking through things and able to execute well. So it’s super exciting.”

Best MLB stadium tours: Go behind the scenes at these ballparks

“Life is an adventure, it’s not a package tour.”  – German philosopher Eckhart Tolle

If you enjoy going on “package tours” of historic mansions, foreign cities or fascinating museums, why not take a tour at a Major League Baseball stadium? We won’t tell Tolle, but let’s consider such a guided tour our own little “adventure.”

While it varies by venue, such tours typically lead you through the clubhouse, press box, workout facilities, batting cages under the stands, a dugout … and some will even allow you to walk onto the playing field. If the team has its own museum, those are likely to be included. The Atlanta Braves, for instance, include a curated look at their exceptional Monument Garden at Truist Park when you take one of their tours.

When planning a tour of a Major League ballpark, keep several things in mind:

Pro Tip No. 1: For the most behind-the-scenes experiences, go when the team doesn’t have a home game.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

You will often see notices listing features you won’t be able to see when there is a game that day. So even though you are likely to pay the same whether such access is permitted or denied, you’ll get more for your money when the team is on the road, or has an off-day during a homestand.

Pro Tip No. 2  Hurry to visit an older ballpark. You might not get another chance.

Derrick Sloboda of Fort Wayne, Indiana considers himself quite fortunate that he took a tour at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park before it was demolished. The Giants had already moved closer to downtown at what is now called Oracle Park, and the 49ers were about to move south to Santa Clara, so Candlestick was in its final weeks.

“The guide extended the tour by an hour because so many people were saying ‘good bye,’ (so) we had half hour on the field, which was great,” recalls Sloboda.

Keep in mind that the main purpose of taking a guided tour is to create memories, and once that venue is gone, those memories will be even more special to you.

Pro Tip No. 3: Try to overlook the high prices

Typically the money you pay for the tour goes to a charity or “foundation” operated by the team, or one that’s meaningful to the ownership. The prices can be pretty high (VIP Tours at some parks top $500), but you’ll get to visit parts of the facility that fans rarely get to see.

So rather than focusing on what it costs, think about the charity your purchase is supporting. And appreciate that you and your family are getting to experience the places where your favorite players do their work.

It’s hard to put a price tag on that.

Join us now for our ranking of the five MLB parks with the best tours (OK, I’m cheating by including six!), based partially on the experiences of visitors to my BaseballParks.com site.

1. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

While other teams might offer you one or two options of tours, the Dodgers provide 11 ! These range from the standard walking stadium tour ($30, and kids and seniors are $25), to the pregame tour of landmarks within the ballpark ($45), to the "Take the Field Tour" where you can play catch in the outfield ($175, only on non-game days – bring your glove!) all the way to the $500 VIP Tour that includes getting to greet the players as they take batting practice.

Most of these experiences include a tour of the Vin Scully Press Box, which is Holy Ground to me, because it’s where I actually got to meet Vin about a dozen years ago!

While on a trip to visit relatives in California, Dutch citizen Chris Kabout thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Chavez Ravine. “The tour showed you the press boxes, old locker rooms, showcases with trophies, gold gloves, retired jerseys, the dugout and you were allowed to walk on the dirt,” he recalls.

The Netherlands resident added that the tour’s guide kept things lively by asking the group trivia questions about the Dodgers. And considering the team dates back to 1883 as the Brooklyn Grays, there is a lot of trivia to discuss!

2. Citi Field, New York  Mets

As befits Citi Field’s reputation as a fun place to attend a game, tours of the Mets’ home have a decidedly upbeat and enjoyable atmosphere, complete with a sit-down history lesson in the room where post-game press conferences are held.

Like the Dodgers, the Mets offer multiple tour options – with varying prices. The public tour costs $25 ($20 for kids 12 and under) and will take you to the private suites, two of the season-ticket-holder restaurants, the press box and down on the field.

On days with a home night game, the "Grand Slam Tour" is available for $70, and that’s over and above the cost of your game ticket. This also permits early entry into the park to watch batting practice. If you want to get closer to the players around the batting cage, there’s the $250 All-Star Tour.

They also offer private tours, with the cost depends on how many are in your group. For instance, if you put together a group of ten, the cost is $62.50 per person.

3. Wrigley Field, Chicago  Cubs

When Wrigley was being designed 110 years ago, they didn’t make it easy to get from one spot under the stands to another. But that just makes the guided tours of the Friendly Confines all the more interesting.

The charge of $30 is reasonable compared to other parks, and whether it’s a gameday or not, you’ll get to check out the famous bleachers and go down on the field. If the Cubbies aren’t home that day, you’ll also get to go in the visiting clubhouse plus one of the dugouts … and you’ll get up close and personal with the iconic ivy growing on the outfield wall.

4. Yankee Stadium, New York

If you go on a tour here, you won’t be visiting the exact spot where Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig played – or Bernie Williams for that matter – because this version of Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. But you will be able to visit the monuments to Babe and Lou in Monument Park in center field as part of the $35 Classic Tour. It also includes the New York Yankees museum. There’s even a version of the tour that includes lunch at the Hard Rock Café that’s built into the ballpark.

One number you’ll see and hear often during any tour here: 27. That’s the number of World Series titles captured by the Bronx Bombers. They won’t let you forget it!

5 (tie). Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals & Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City Royals

While one is a fairly new facility (Busch Stadium, 2006) and one is kind of not-so-new (Kauffman Stadium, 1973), they have more in common than the state of Missouri. Both the Cards and Royals operate exceptional museums that are worthy of your time, and their tour guides are among the nicest and friendliest in the sport.

The Royals have been operating tours for decades, and they have the process down pat. They offer three versions, and you can’t beat the prices: the Classic Tour costs $15; the All-Star tour is $25 (includes the team Hall of Fame); and the MVP Tour costs $35 (includes the broadcast facilities and the dugout suites). Don’t forget to visit KC’s excellent Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, just six miles west of Kauffman.

Across the state in St. Louis, the Cards offer two tours. The 360 Tour is a quick walk around the park and the dugout, showing you the view from various vantage points. It costs $12. The Classic Tour is $22 and includes a visit to the broadcast booths and admission to the Cardinals museum across the street.

Come to think of it, plan an adventure to Missouri so you can visit both Kauffman and Busch. The “package tours” sure are affordable, and you won’t get in trouble with a German philosopher!

About Joe Mock: Joe has examined all 30 Major League parks, all 23 spring training parks and all 119 affiliated Minor League parks – plus plenty of indy league and college facilities. He covers sports facilities for USA TODAY publications and he’s operated  BaseballParks.com  since 1997. There he’s posted nearly 100 in-depth reviews of pro parks that have opened in the last quarter century. His ballpark expertise has landed him appearances on the Travel Channel and History Channel. Yoga at an olive farm starting from Chania

Yoga at an olive farm starting from Chania

The region of Chania has everything! It is enchanting ,blessed by nature, constantly inhabited during 5.500 years and a timeless crossroad of East Mediterranean civilizations. During the ancient period (3.000-2.800 B.C.) the old harbor was used by the ancient Minoans, as a crossroad of all five Continents. Furthermore, this harbor hosted ancient Kydonia to the late 7th century A.D., one of the most important cities of ancient Crete, while it was conquered many times during the past by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks, Hebrews, Egyptians, and Arabs, till the end of the 19th century, when it was liberated. Finally, Chania – as well as the whole Crete - was united with independent Greece in 1913 with the significant help of the great Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos.

One visit is simply not enough , because everytime you walk at the city and the countryside, you travel back in time, you live different experiences , and you constantly discover new striking views which remain engraved forever in your memories and in your heart. Already before you leave Chania, you start to plan your return …

Today Chania is a top tourist destination with unlimited entertainment options that satisfy the most demanding tastes. Being the second largest city of Crete after Heraklion it is a municipality of more than 100.000 inhabitants, a lively , dynamic land that attaches great importance to the preservation of historic memories and Cretan traditions.

How to get to Chania

Chania has an  international airport  with scheduled flights year-round and abundant charter flights serving much of Europe during the season - April to October.

Ferries sail to and from Athens (Pireas) daily to the port of  Souda, a few kilometers away from Chania city center.

Places to see

During your visit you will have to see the old Town of Chania with its huddled streets of Byzantine , Venetian and Turkish remnants and the many small souvenir shops as well as have a lovely  lunch, dinner or coffee by the seaside watching over the famous Lighthouse.

If you are interested in archaeological sites and historical monuments Chania has much to offer such as the Ancient Aptera site above the Souda bay which was durind the Minoan Period one of the most important city-states of Crete. Moreover this place has an incredible view!!While strolling around the old city you can also visit the Grand Arsenal , the Firka Fortress, Giali Tzamisi , the Sabbionara Gate , the Byzantine Wall, the Municipal Market , the Minaret of Agios Nikolaos and of course the Egyptian Lighthouse .

A historical prespective of Chania would not be complete if you haven’t visited the Archaelogical Museum of Chania, the Folklore museum ,the Museum of Eleftherios Venizelos and the Nautical Museum .

After having discovered the cultural side of Chania it is time for the entertainment and activities .  Chania is famous for the entertainment particularly during summer months. The high spirit never stops here! The mood is getting better early in the morning at the beaches and beach bars ,that know how to make suitable atmosphere, so that each visitor can enjoy Cretan sun and the sea as much as possible. When the evening comes enjoy a wonderful dinner in one of the restaurants of the Venetian harbor. Continuing with a relaxed drink in one of the coffee bars of Chania or Platanias having fun with various music genres as jazz, pop rock and of course Greek music or Cretan music at some places .

The activities and tours that one can do couldn’t be more abundant at this place !! You can start from a day tour to the famous Samaria gorge   or to the Elafonisi beach or try scuba diving and paragliding . You can hop on a Segway and do a city tour with a guide or do a cruise to the incredible Balos lagoon .

For the one’s that want a more exciting day in the countryside to see the real Crete you can go on a Landrover Safari or find yourself cooking traditional delicacies .
