‘It was inhuman’: Why the Copa America final was delayed and dangerously close to disaster

The black gates at the southwest entrance of Hard Rock Stadium had been closed for one hour and 45 minutes when a young child was hoisted on a guardian’s shoulders amid the crush of people waiting to get in for the Copa América final.

The boy waved his hands toward the police officers and security guards standing next to the lone door that was opening to let people into the stadium. He put his hands together as if in prayer, pleading with them to let him in.

“Please,” he said. “Please.”

As a security guard reached out and pulled the boy and his guardian toward the open gate, the boy started to cry in relief, then got spun around, the Messi No. 10 visible on the back of his sky blue and white Argentina jersey.

Similar scenes played out for more than two hours as fans pressed against the closed gates at the stadium in Miami Gardens, a near-disaster that overshadowed the spectacle of the game that was eventually played between Argentina and Colombia , two South American powers fighting for a major international trophy.

Fans had been asked to arrive early, with watch parties banned outside the stadium or in the parking lots. Hard Rock also said “fans MUST have a game ticket” to enter the stadium campus on Sunday.

It was busy outside from 3 p.m., the gates opened at 5 p.m. and the crowd outside started to build around 6 p.m., about two hours from the scheduled kick-off. Several fans were arrested for hopping fences and trying to get into the game without tickets. The decision to shut the gates around the stadium — a response to what Miami-Dade Police called “unruly behavior” — would prove key to what followed.

With the sun beating down, fans pushed toward the closed gates, causing a crush. There were few visible barriers to disperse the people trying to get in; to try to ease the flow. When the gates opened slightly, the fans swelled forward and security closed the gates again, with several people stuck outside saying they had no idea what was going on.

This pattern continued again and again, with fans being let in at a trickle, almost one by one. At times, kids would come through with their guardians, their faces beet red, soaked in sweat and many in tears. Other fans clearly suffering from heat-related issues were held upright by their friends. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue set up a medical station just inside the gates, where they treated a steady stream of people suffering from heat-related issues. Video showed fans holding their tickets up to cameras saying they paid $2,000 for seats, only to be denied entry.

A Hard Rock Stadium spokesperson said: “Throughout the afternoon and evening, there were numerous attempts by unruly fans without tickets to overpower security and law enforcement personnel at entry points to the stadium, putting themselves, other fans and security and stadium staff at extreme risk.

“Various stadium gates were closed and re-opened strategically in an attempt to allow ticketed guests to enter safely and in a controlled manner. Fans continued to engage in illegal conduct — fighting police officers, breaking down walls and barricades and vandalizing the stadium, causing significant damage to the property.”

One woman, who identified herself later to The Athletic as Diana, was carried unconscious into the stadium by a police officer. She was laid down on the concrete in the area set up with medics and eventually woke up and was given water. Steven, a 34-year-old Colombian who lives in Miami and was with Diana, described the situation.

“Everyone started to push and you could feel yourself losing air,” he said. “And once we got closer to the gates, you can only imagine. I noticed that Diana was struggling. Fortunately, I was standing behind her.”

Diana, 28, said she remembered the moment she fainted.

“I tried to breathe,” she said. “A man kept telling me, ‘Try to breathe. Try to breathe’ and I responded that I wanted them to open another gate. They were using one gate for all of these people but people pushed back. I held on to a man that was standing near me. Everyone was pushing. Colombians, Argentines. Everyone was pushing.”

Even friends and family members of players were caught in the melee, as the southwest gate was an entry point for media and VIP ticket holders. The family of Colombia fullback Daniel Muñoz sat together just inside the entrance shortly after the gates were closed, having been pushed toward the entrance and eventually pulled inside.

“We were standing in line as a family waiting to get in and then the reckless people behind me started to push me,” said Manuela Ángel, Muñoz’s wife, who was bleeding from a cut on her wrist. “They thought I was causing chaos, so I was pushed towards the police officers, away from the line. They started yelling at my children. My oldest is six years old and my youngest isn’t even two yet. I’m here with Daniel ’s grandmother, his mother, his aunt and other family members. I suffered the most because I was in front of all of them. I had the tickets.

“One police officer helped me because she saw me crying. I told her I was Daniel’s wife and that I was concerned for my children’s well-being. Entering other stadiums (during the tournament) has been fine but tonight was terrible. Just terrible.”

Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister ’s family was also caught up. “Alexis had to come out to get us in,” his mother, Silvina, said on Argentinian television. “He was worried about us. It was inhuman. He gave us a hug. We told him to stay calm and get ready to play.”

One media member, who works for a rights-holder for the tournament, was slammed to the ground and arrested after getting through a gate where media members had been held.

Argentina and Colombia players went out to warm up in front of a sparse crowd at just after 7 p.m., only to abort their routines by 7.30 p.m. when it became obvious the match could not start on time.

“When we were warming up and in the locker rooms, they told us there was a half-hour delay,” said Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo. “It was more, right? We were trying to talk to our family members and friends and finding out if they were OK. It was a bit weird and chaotic. We tried to keep calm but there was a level of anxiousness.”

Two fans, both wearing Honduras gear, got in around 8 p.m., after two hours of waiting in the mass of people. Both were soaked in sweat and visibly frustrated. They said police threatened them with tear gas and tasers.

“What’s happening is they want to control the people in the front and it’s not the people in the front. They’re pushing from the back,” Alejandro Flores told The Athletic . “You have to move the people in front out and control the people in the back. Pull them back so that the people can be orderly.

“Their job is to protect and serve. The people are fainting in front of their faces and it doesn’t matter to them at all. They don’t even want to give us water. Not even water, man. Not even water.”

Flores’ frustration boiled over again as he looked back at the people still pressed against the fences behind him.

“CONMEBOL is a disaster,” he said of the tournament’s organizers, the South American Football Confederation. “In North Carolina (the Uruguay-Colombia semifinal) was a test. They should have prepared themselves and the same thing is happening. North Carolina was a disaster. Right now, it’s going down the same path, or worse.

“CONMEBOL should not have brought this tournament to the United States… Look around, because they’re not ready for a World Cup.”

This stadium will host seven matches at the 2026 men’s World Cup — four in the group stage, a round-of-32 game, a quarterfinal and the third-place playoff. The tournament is organized by soccer’s world governing body FIFA as opposed to CONMEBOL.

Another fan who declined to give a name stood with his hands on his hips near an escalator at the entrance, watching the scene from which he had just emerged continue to play out.

“People piled on. There was more and more pressure and people were fainting,” he said. “There are children vomiting, a lot of people there, and you can’t move. In other words, you don’t have control of your body; you go where they push you. And on top of that, there is no one to organize or help with anything.”

As he was talking, police officers backed away from the gates and stood off to the side. Suddenly, at around 8:15 p.m., a quarter-hour after the game was initially supposed to kick off, the southwest gates were opened and fans flooded in without tickets being checked or anyone being patted down or passing through metal detectors.

A Hard Rock Stadium spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8 p.m., stadium officials, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and law enforcement officers communicated and decided to open stadium gates for a short period of time to all fans to prevent stampedes and serious injury at the perimeter. The gates were then closed once the threat of fans being crushed was alleviated. At that time, the venue was at capacity and gates were not re-opened.”

Video taken from the stadium appeared to show fans still sneaking into the stadium after that initial rush of supporters were let in. One video showed fans crawling through an opening up near a ceiling adjacent to ventilation. Another video showed fans climbing a makeshift ladder to get over a fence.

Thousands were still outside when the game eventually kicked off at 9.22 p.m., 82 minutes after it should have started. Some watched from the stadium’s aisles until police combed through the crowd checking for tickets and asking those without them to leave. Others retreated to the stadium concourses for food and water — alcohol sales were suspended shortly after kick off.

Those refused entry remained until well into the second half of the game, past 11pm, and Argentina did not seal its win until gone midnight after extra time .

Miami-Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava issued a statement along with chief public safety officer James Reyes saying Miami-Dade Police provided more than 550 officers for the game and that they were “outraged by the unprecedented events at tonight’s Copa America finals”.

“The Copa America final is organized by CONMEBOL and Miami-Dade Police Department provides security support, along with other law enforcement agencies,” the statement read.

“Let’s be clear: This situation should never have taken place and cannot happen again. We will work with stadium leadership to ensure that a full review of tonight’s events takes place immediately to evaluate the full chain of events, in order to put in place needed protocols and policies for all future games.”

Hard Rock Stadium promised to work with CONMEBOL to address the “individual concerns of ticket holders who could not get in”.

“We are grateful to the law enforcement officers who managed a difficult situation and prioritized the safety of the venue, the players, their families and the fans,” a spokesperson added. “We will continue to work with law enforcement to identify and hold criminals accountable who engaged in illegal conduct tonight.

“It is disappointing that a night of celebration was impacted by unlawful and unsafe behavior and we will fully review the processes and protocols in place tonight and work with law enforcement to ensure such an event never happens again.”

Members of the press were caught out, too: Veronica Brunati, one of Argentina’s most respected football reporters, tweeted at 10.37pm to say she had been unable to enter the stadium.

“This is a nightmare,” she wrote. “It’s madness. There are thousands of us here outside our entrance gate.

“But I’m alive, thank God.”

Test Drive: Mid-sized 10.9m Scania Touring

Tim Deakin

While mid-sized, full-weight coaches form a niche part of the market, competition is keen for buyers’ money in this segment. Scania has added further to what is available with its Touring at 10.9m, complementing existing 12.1m two-axle and 13.7m tri-axle models.

The newcomer sits alongside similar-length Scania Irizar products. While Scania acknowledges that none will sell at a rate equalling that of their longer sisters, it believes that the mid-sized coaches each have their places. In the 10.9m Touring’s case, that is as a vehicle that gives a good amount of metal and amenities for the price.

10 stock short Tourings have been delivered, two of which are sold. Brent Thomas Coaches of Tonypandy was the first to take delivery; its example is a 42-seater with a floor-mounted toilet. Scania also has available straight 45-seaters.

Chassis for the Touring range are shipped to Higer in China for bodying. The coaches then proceed to Antwerp. There, interior fittings including seats are installed. While none of the stock 10.9m examples are PSVAR compliant, achieving that is planned for later batches. The additional door will be fitted at the build stage, but the lift and destination display equipment will be added in Belgium.

Scania Touring 10.8m interior

“We are confident that there is a market for this size Touring,” says UK Retail Sales Manager Lee Wale.

“It comes with all the elements of a full-size coach and it is cost effective. Because of that, we believe it will suit private hire and tour work – along with corporate duties, for which its length is ideal.”

As part of Scania’s standard offering to retail coach customers, two years’ repair and maintenance coverage is applied to the 10.9m Touring. That can be extended to suit the purchaser, while Scania Financial Services can support buyers via its usual channels. Days before the first coach was delivered to Brent Thomas, it was made available for a routeone test drive.

10.9m has lots in common with other Scania Touring models

As effectively a shortened version of the 12.1m Touring, the mid-sized model has a lot in common with it. There are also some minor differences, but nothing that is overly noticeable by, or relevant to, passengers.

The test coach is mounted on the K 360 IB chassis, with a front beam axle. Power is from the 9.3-litre DC09 engine developing 360bhp and 1,700Nm of torque. That is harnessed by the Opticruise eight-speed automated manual gearbox. A retarder forms part of the driveline.

Scania (Great Britain) insisted that the toilet in the 10.9m Touring was floor mounted to maximise luggage space. Immediately adjacent, and behind the offside rear wheels, is a powered continental door. As a result, the underfloor area between the axles is entirely clear for luggage. Two manually operated, parallel-lifting doors are fitted on each side.

Scania Touring 10.9m underfloor area

A 310-litre fuel tank with dual fillers sits over the front axle. On the shortest Touring, the AdBlue filler is ahead of the nearside rear wheels.

A wheelbase of 4.90m guarantees good manoeuvrability. However, as all the heavy bits of the 12.1m Touring form part of the mid-sized example, the newcomer is not a lightweight coach. As tested, it tips the scales at 13,036kg unladen and has a 19,500kg GVW.

Well-specified mid-sized motor suits a variety of work

Scania has specified a variety of upholsteries on the first stock coaches, extending from largely moquette-based to full leather. The Brent Thomas example comes with the latter on its Kiel Avance seats, and their black trim imparts a restrained feel to the saloon.

The seats are to a high specification in addition to their leather finish. They have three-point belts, footrests, drop-down tables and magazine nets, while aisle positions have lateral adjustment. USB points are mounted within the side walls.

Dark flooring is fitted, albeit not wood effect. The sunken aisle comes with a carpet. At the front, four steps take passengers to the platform and two more to the gangway. All are edged in yellow. The courier seat is quite bulky and its base is not locked in position when stowed.

Proceeding along the coach, there is a step in the gangway at around the two-thirds mark. The rear row of seats has only two positions, with the space between those and the toilet occupied by a small servery fitted by AD Coach Systems.

Scania Touring 10.9m Kiel Avance seat

While the floor-mounted toilet has debuted in the 10.9m model, it can also now be specified on the Touring at other lengths.

Two monitors are fitted as standard, coupled to a Bosch entertainment system incorporating a DVD player.

A roof-mounted air-conditioning unit works in tandem with perimeter radiators; climate control is fitted, but an auxiliary coolant heater is not. There is a fridge in the dash.

Cab is well specified – and well heated and cooled

The cab area is standard Scania. As a result it is well laid out, although the tachograph head unit is low to the floor. Storage for smaller items is good, but it’s likely that the driver’s bag will need to go into one of the twin lockable front sections of the luggage racks.

Gullwing mirrors are complemented by a lower-level offside repeater. The signalling window is also powered and heated. Scope for adjustment of the steering wheel is good, and it additionally can be laid almost flat to create space for larger drivers to enter and exit the Isringhausen seat. That comes with the usual refinements, while adjacent to it are a hands-free microphone and a map light.

One thing that the driver will not be is cold. In addition to cab climate control, beneath the seat is an independent heater blower. Meanwhile, a moderately warm day saw the cab temperature brought down quickly by the air-conditioning.

View of cab area in Brent Thomas coach

On the dash is a display that feeds to the spoiler-mounted camera when reverse is engaged, and to a camera above the continental door when that is open.

Scania has mastered what some OEMs cannot and positioned the handbrake lever where it is easily accessible to the tallest drivers.

Forward visibility from the Touring is good thanks to its recessed A-pillars. To the side things are a little more difficult for a tall driver or one who sits further back. The B-pillar is slightly in the way at some junctions, and the signalling window frame can sit in the eyeline.

Shorter Touring is as capable on the road as its bigger sisters

The five-cylinder DC09 is ample for the short Touring. Gears are selected via a rotary stalk. The coach initially used first to pull away but later settled on second. Opticruise moves rapidly between ratios and speed is gained rapidly. Coupled to a highly manoeuvrable chassis, that means the coach can push on well along winding rural A-roads.

A power mode is available by further twisting the stalk when in drive. It causes gears to be held longer, but there was no need to utilise it during the test. Scania can disable it should the customer require.

The DC09 revs a little harder than larger engines, but it is also happy to work within the torque band when the cruise control is set. At 50mph, eighth gear can be held at 1,100rpm – where peak torque begins – and pickup is prompt from those speeds. At 62mph, the tachometer shows a shade below 1,400rpm.

Scania Touring 10.9m engine bay

Roadholding is good and there is no sign of the ‘nodding’ that can sometimes be apparent on short-wheelbase coaches. Noise levels are also impressively low.

The dash display can impart a great deal of information on both the vehicle and, to a lesser extent, the driver’s performance. Monitoring is provided to the operator free of charge for 10 years by Scania; an important part of that shows the amount of fuel wasted while idling.

More useful consumption is also detailed. On a largely motorway section, the 10.9m Touring turned in 12.7mpg. When rural running to and from Retford and through Blyth was added, the overall return was 11.5mpg – both of which are impressive for what is a heavyweight coach.

10.9m Touring is a worthwhile addition to the Scania range

Although the 10.9m Touring is in a niche part of the market, the number of competitors that are also present demonstrates that there is business to be done with the right product. One of Scania’s aims for the newcomer is for it to provide a cost-effective proposition in this sector.

It is established that having the Touring bodied in China brings a price point benefit, but from a passenger’s point of view that is not relevant. Most of the saloon fittings – including the seats – are added in Europe, and for the driver, the chassis and driveline are no different to other Scania products.

Rear view of white Scania coach

The typical Swedish refinement and low noise levels are both also present. The coach’s interior trim lends itself to corporate work, which the size and capacity of the 10.9m Touring will eminently suit.

But 42 or 45 seats will also satisfy some demand in the private hire, day trip and tour sectors.

When combined with a good amount of luggage space and a keen pricing point, that makes the new addition to Scania’s range perhaps more versatile than would first be thought.

How the global supply chain is like a summer metallica tour.

Forbes Books

Each concert on a world tour calls for meticulous planning and execution.

I love a good concert. Put me in front of Metallica or another one of my favorite bands, and I’ll enjoy myself for hours. But you know what I also love? Merch. I’ll buy all the band merch I can get my hands on. Of course, how those products get to me is a whole other scenario, and it’s just like the global supply chain.

To understand global supply chain management, look no further than your favorite summer rock-and-roll tour. Let’s take a look at how the two are alike and how they’re different.

What Is Global Supply Chain Management?

Global supply chain management , or GSCM, is how goods move from raw materials and manufacturing to the end consumer. It involves the complexities of international logistics, cultural differences, and market conditions worldwide.

There are hundreds of variables to account for, making supply chain logistics a complex and scientific field with many logistics management strategies. Plus, you must account for supply chain disruptions, such as weather, politics, wars, pandemics, and labor issues.

Just think about natural disasters and the supply chain alone. A hurricane or earthquake can drive up global gasoline prices and other products. We also know firsthand how pandemics can affect our supply chain. Remember when we all needed toilet paper, and there was none to be found?

Amazon Prime Day 2024: Our Deals Editors Found The 100 Best Discounts So Far

‘the acolyte’ episode 8 recap and review: a terrible season finale despite cliffhangers and ‘star wars’ cameos, best prime day beauty deals: up to 70% off olaplex, dyson, braun and more, procurement: lining up the essentials.

Procurement is a key facet of supply chain management. It’s all about buying the materials and goods needed to keep the supply chain moving.

For Metallica, this means maintaining instruments, sourcing out specialized stage equipment, and buying a vast array of merch. Their procurement team negotiates with suppliers for their iconic guitars from ESP, drum kits from Tama, and even custom T-shirts, posters, and limited-edition albums. Ensuring these items meet their standards and are ready for the tour is no small feat.

Project-Based Logistics: The World Tour

Each concert on Metallica’s world tour is a “project” that calls for meticulous planning and execution. The logistics team must coordinate the transportation of gear and merch across many countries. Welcome to the world of project-based logistics.

Metallica’s tours require 48 trucks to carry custom-built stage setups and sound systems from city to city— ensuring everything arrives on time for each show. It also needs detailed planning for customs clearance, especially for international legs of the tour, which is vital to avoid delays.

Rock-and-Roll Tours Are the Same—but Different

While they don’t necessarily have to think about global supply chain trends, rock-and-roll tour logistics are the same, but on a smaller scale. The people who coordinate a band’s transportation are running their own smaller version of a supply chain.

Take Metallica’s drummer’s kit, for example. If it’s a world tour, they must create a global logistics network of planes, trucks, and warehouses to transport the drum set from New York City to London within a certain number of days.

That’s not always easy, but they get it done.

Both Are About Supply Chain Coordination

Both rock-and-roll tours and the global supply chain require coordination. The starting point needs to work with the endpoint to make sure there are no problems transporting goods—whether it’s a massive sound system or a box of pasta for a grocery store.

Supply chain experts focus on the following:

  • Efficiency — Making sure goods flow with the least waste, fewest delays, and lowest cost.
  • Optimization — Anticipating demand, streamlining routes, and limiting inventory storage demands.
  • Integration — Ensuring all parts of the supply chain are on coordinated networks, including suppliers, manufacturers, transportation, sales, and customer service. While digital networks handle most integration, cultural integration is built on trust, communication, and shared values.

Just like with international tours, language barriers in supply chains can make things even more complicated. But in the end, whether it’s mics and amps or candy bars and detergent, you want your supply chain to be efficient, functional, and well-coordinated.

Next time you enjoy a rock concert or pick up your favorite band’s latest merch, remember the intricate supply chain behind it. Whether talking about guitars and amps or groceries and toiletries, efficient supply chain management makes it all possible.

The global supply chain has many moving parts to keep track of. That’s why you need skillful supply chain management. See my blog to explore all the people who play a part in this globe-spanning team and how supply chains can be disrupted.

What is the Democratic National Convention?

Held every four years since 1832, the primary goal of the Democratic National Convention is to officially pick a candidate for president and vice president, and to adopt a party platform.

Party delegates attend the convention and cast their votes to officially choose the party's presidential candidate.

When is the Democratic National Convention?

This year, the Democratic National Convention is set to take place in Chicago from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.

When will Democrats nominate their presidential candidate?

Typically, Democratic delegates would officially pick a presidential candidate by casting a vote in-person during the national convention. Nevertheless, this year Democrats delegates will cast their votes virtually and ahead of the convention.

Early nomination was planned to deal with an Ohio law that would require an official candidate by Aug. 7 in order to appear on the state ballots.

However, on June 2, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill extending the deadline to Aug. 31, over a week after the convention.

When is the Republican National Convention?

This year, the Republican National Convention runs from July 15 to July 18 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

As for what to expect at her live shows, The New York Post recently had the opportunity to see Roan at Gov Ball and heaped praise on her attention-grabbing short set. In our glowing review, we raved that she “combin(es) amazing vocals, costume changes, danceable choreography and even a few heartfelt messages” into her performance.

Buju Banton’s first ever U.S. arena tour is making a stop in Tampa

  • Maggie Duffy Times staff

After a 15-year performance hiatus in the U.S., Grammy Award-winning reggae artist Buju Banton is embarking on his first-ever arena tour. It includes a stop in Tampa on Aug. 25 at Amalie Arena.

Tickets go on sale Friday, July 19.

“The Overcomer” tour also features guest artist Fridayy, the Haitian-American singer, songwriter and producer whose song “God Did” by DJ Khaled featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and John Legend was Grammy-nominated.

Born Mark Myrie, Banton was raised in Kingston, Jamaica, and was given the nickname “Buju” by his mother. He made a name for himself in the 1990s in the dancehall scene and went on to break Bob Marley’s record for No. 1 singles on the Jamaican charts in 1992, according to Tampa Bay Times archives .

Banton caused international controversy with his violent, homophobic lyrics, resulting in canceled shows from 2005-2011. In 2007, he vowed to never again incite “hatred or violence.”

In 2011, he was convicted on federal drug charges in a Tampa courtroom and served years in federal prison in one of the most high-profile cases tried in the Sam M. Gibbons United States Courthouse in downtown Tampa.

The trial started on Feb. 14, 2011, the day after he won a Grammy for best reggae album for “Before the Dawn,” which was recorded before his arrest.

He was freed in 2018 after serving his sentence in Georgia and returned to Jamaica.

How to get tickets to Buju Banton

Tickets range $54.75-$244.75 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19 at ticketmaster.com .
