Partnership is Key

The Indiana County Tourist Bureau (ICTB) works with a widespread network of partnerships and cooperatives to attract visitors from across the country and the world through broad tourism marketing initiatives.  The tourist bureau’s close connection with area businesses and organizations on the local level, coupled with the personal relationships of organizations at the state and national level, have made Indiana County a national player in the tourism industry.  In addition, forging strong partnerships with fellow tourist bureaus in neighboring counties, such as Armstrong, Butler and Lawrence, the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, as well as with the Pennsylvania state tourism office, has created a united tourism presence in the region, bringing bottom line dollars to this area of Pennsylvania.

Marketing and Promotions

Comprehensive marketing and promotions are targeted to specific audiences, including motor coach tour groups, sports and leisure groups, meetings and conventions, educational trips and corporate groups.  Working to bring large groups to the county for single and multi-day excursions, whether business-related, for recreation, or a combination of the two, brings tourism-related dollars to the area.  Indiana County employs nearly 2,000 residents within the tourism & hospitality industry, making it a multi-million dollar contributor to Indiana County’s economy.

In addition to the marketing and promotion of Indiana County, the tourist bureau offers memberships to businesses, non-profit groups, clubs, organizations, one-time event groups and individuals.  Membership benefits include free internet exposure on the ICTB website and event promotion through an online calendar, weekly email-blast, and social media outlets. Additional ICTB membership benefits include a complimentary listing (with option for paid advertisement) in the visitor guide , the latest industry news, networking opportunities, group-target marketing and free distribution of printed marketing collateral.

The tourist bureau serves as an integral distribution center for tourism-related news and information in Indiana County. Assisting both visitors and residents alike, ICTB provides information and resources about their members and local events and attractions as well as the county and region in general. Indiana is home to the Hoosiers and a history that runs deep. Entertainment and tourist attractions embed themselves across all corners of the state. From fun things to do in the state capital, Indianapolis, to family-friendly tourist attractions in Fort Wayne, Bloomington, and Lafayette, Indiana has no shortage of exciting places to visit.

Several museums across the state blend fun experiences with educational value. A few of these educational escapes dive into science, Studebakers, and fine art at places like the Snite Museum of Art on the Notre Dame campus. And while the world-famous Indianapolis 500 only takes place once a year in May, the on-site museum celebrates the track's history throughout the year.

And Indiana is big on getting outside. Areas like Prophetstown State Park and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, among many others, provide campsites, hiking trails, and stunning scenery for those adventurous explorers looking to get outdoors.

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is a large and wondrous place the whole family can enjoy. It encompasses 29 acres in the United Northwest neighborhood of the city. And as the largest children's museum in the world, the many different exhibits and hands-on science displays span from the time of the dinosaurs to astronauts living aboard the International Space Station.

The museum is a sure-fire favorite for children of all ages and an incredible learning experience for adults as well. The collection includes thousands of artifacts, photo opportunities, and interactive experiences. A few exhibits at this world-renowned museum include a planetarium, children's theater, and numerous outdoor exhibits, including an eye-catching "Tree of Sports" playground.

Other areas of eye-catching interest include a 43-foot-tall Dale Chihuly glass sculpture; full-size dinosaur skeletons, including one of the world's few mummified dinosaurs; and an interactive playscape designed specifically for preschoolers.

Alongside several full-day family outings, the museum also provides daily events and programs. A sample of scheduled events includes costume-building workshops, a "Secrets of the Lab" series, and Astronaut Training aboard the International Space Station. For even more fun things to do, the children's museum also features a restored 1917 carousel on the fourth level of this nearly 475,000-square-foot facility.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , or the Indy Racing Museum , is located within the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, also known as "The Track." This world-renowned raceway is home to the Indianapolis 500-miler every May. And this year-round museum commemorates this fastest day in motorsports with a premier collection of automobiles and artifacts.

The museum is open every day of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Its collection includes over 55,000 artifacts, including over 300 cars. And at least 25 past winners of the Indianapolis 500 are on permanent display. Other artifacts include racing memorabilia, photography, and archived video.

Several guided tours are also available through the museum. The two-hour golf cart tour is a popular outing, including an in-depth trip around the track. However, the most popular tour is the Kiss the Bricks Tour , which features a narrated bus ride and an opportunity to get personal with the famous racetrack.

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art is situated at the White River State Park entrance in downtown Indiana. It holds a remarkable collection assembled by Indianapolis businessman Harrison Eiteljorg. On display are paintings and sculptures of the West, from the early 19th century onwards.

A few art pieces on display include works by the landscapists Albert Bierstadt and Georgia O'Keefe, and pictures and sculptures by the leading Western artists Frederick S. Remington and Charles M. Russell. The museum's most recent installation, Attitudes: The West in American Art , features a diverse collection of artists and cultures of the American West.

The encompassing White River State Park contains many other gems of the city . Adjacent to the Eiteljorg Museum, the Indiana State Museum features three floors relating stories of Indiana art, science, and culture through interactive exhibits.

Another great add-on experience to the Eiteljorg within White River State Park is the Indiana Zoo , across the banks of the White River. Resident animals include sea lions, cheetahs, and brown bears. White River State Park also features the NCAA Hall of Champions and Victory Field, home to the Indiana Indians minor league baseball team.

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is a premier amusement park located in Santa Claus, Indiana. This immersive theme park has a massive collection of rides and slides enticing all sorts of family vacations. It's recommended to spend at least two days exploring the different themed worlds of this Indiana amusement park, from vertigo-inducing roller coasters to kid-friendly attractions.

Holiday World is split between the Fourth of July, Halloween, Christmas, and Thanksgiving worlds, each offering unique details and rides. Splashin Safari encompasses its own massive section of the park, offering one of the largest water parks in the state .

Turkey Run is one of the most popular state parks in Indiana and is located just over an hour's drive west of Indianapolis. Several outdoor activities entice visitors to this natural space, including miles of hiking trails , a popular swimming pool, and other adventures like kayaking and fishing . Much of the landscape comprises woodlands and sandstone ravines along Sugar Creek.

Turkey Run is also a popular spot for overnight adventures. The state park has both indoor and outdoor places to stay, including lodge rooms and campsites. The 60-plus rooms at the Turkey Run Inn are available to book up to a year in advance, and many of the summer reservations go fast. Approximately 23 cabins are also available. Campsites are abundant, with more than 60 sites accommodating tent campers and RVs.

The Snite Museum of Art offers free admission and a dense collection of 19 th- and 20 th- century artworks on the University of Notre Dame campus . The collection spans different cultures and significant periods of world art history.

The galleries include European paintings and sculptures, Mesoamerican effigies, Native American ceramics, and contemporary works. The museum also hosts a constantly rotating selection of new exhibits, including thesis projects by current MFA students at the university.

The museum is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, with more limited hours on Saturdays. The newly instated Charles B. Hayes Sculpture Garden is also operated by the museum a couple of blocks away, allowing visitors to enjoy aesthetic art and nature throughout the year.

The University of Notre Dame offers plenty more to explore for students and community members alike. It's not hard to find inspiration when stepping foot into the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus, as well as the adjacent Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes spiritual shrine.

The nearby Compton Family Ice Arena is a great place to catch a hockey game or get on the ice yourself. For many, attending Fighting Irish football games at Notre Dame Stadium is a way of life and much-anticipated activity every season.

Celebrating over 50 years as one of the top attractions of Fort Wayne , the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo encourages tourists and residents to experience award-winning animal exhibits.

Spread throughout distinct ecosystems spanning the African Serengeti to an Indonesian rainforest, a few of the hundreds of animals at the zoo include Amur leopards, Tasmanian devils, red pandas, and Komodo dragons.

Other attractions at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo include family-friendly rides like the Endangered Species Carousel . The zoo also facilitates animal experiences that allow visitors to interact with giraffes, goats, and ponies. Recent large-scale renovations to the Children's Zoo have been extremely popular and have given it the national recognition it receives today.

Home to the Hoosiers and nearly 200 years of education history, Bloomington hosts the flagship campus of Indiana University . An air of academia defines the historic lecture halls and pedestrian pathways found on campus, including the iconic Sample Gates , leading to other campus attractions like the Kirkwood Observatory .

Hoosier sports intertwine with the identity of the entire state, and both football at Memorial Stadium and basketball at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall provide true community gathering spots and reasons to cheer.

Cultural institutes like the Eskenazi Museum of Art and the IU Arboretum are popular for students and community members alike and help define the community. For dining and local shops near the university, the neighboring Kirkwood Avenue is a popular spot for afternoon storefront perusing and evening entertainment.

Steeped in natural and cultural history, Prophetstown is a new addition to the Indiana State Park system and features many ways to interact with the environment. Within the state park, the 125-acre Farm at Prophetstown embodies a 1920s motif, including hands-on experiences with homesteading, gardening, and livestock feeding.

The state park is at the confluence of the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers and features a variety of hiking trails that cater to all abilities of hikers. An extensive Aquatic Center at the park also draws a lot of warm-weather attention with a zero-depth entry pool, lazy river, and 30-foot waterslide. Nearby, interested visitors can learn more about the area at the Tippecanoe Battlefield Park.

The American car manufacturer Studebaker was a defining industry of South Bend and has long roots tied to the city. It once was the headquarters for manufacturing, and today, the Studebaker National Museum displays a wide range of these made-in-Indiana automobiles. Among their exhibits are classic models, military vehicles, and the largest collection of Presidential carriages found anywhere in the country.

The Super Service Center at the museum is an interactive area at the museum designed for children. It enables young visitors to step inside an auto shop to work on kid-size cars. The museum's collection also consists of numerous manufacturing drawings and history relating to the Studebaker Corporation.

WonderLab is a children's fun center in Bloomington with a focus on science, health, and technology. It features hands-on and immersive learning experiences alongside popular permanent exhibits.

A few of the favorite exhibits include a Bubble-Airium; the Fitzgerald Hall of Natural Science; and an outdoor WonderGarden, which connects with the nearby pedestrian corridor, the B-Line Trail. Other areas of interest at the museum include a coral reef aquarium, a children's Discovery Garden, and facilities for birthday parties or events.

The museum also runs an active events calendar targeted at both adults and children, including science talks, STEM Sundays, and a "WonderLab After Dark" series.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore overlooks the shores of Lake Michigan near the Illinois border, presenting a unique landscape found in no other place in the state. The lapping shores and lakeside landscape enable a wide variety of outdoor activities. The adjacent state park of the same name is one of the most popular spots for hiking, biking, and beach-going.

Fishing and boating are also available at the lakeshore, and camping at the seasonal Dunewood Campground is a great way to make a multi-day trip. During the winter, activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing tend to reign supreme. Sunsets at Lake Michigan are a recommended experience for any visit, which often resonate with brightly changing colors and tones.

The Lanier Mansion was built for James Franklin Doughty Lanier, a prominent businessman in the state of Indiana around the mid-1800s. The Greek Revival-style house was completed in 1844 and is one of the finest buildings in Madison's National Historic Landmark District.

The home was designed by architect Francis Costigan. Inside are some of the original furnishings and an impressive three-story spiral staircase. On the grounds are formal gardens showcasing plants and landscape styles of the late 19th century.

Visitors are welcome to tour the historic mansion during daily operating hours, Tuesday through Sunday. Guided tours begin at the top of every hour. The historic mansion is also home to several events and programs throughout the year, including holiday candlelight tours, early childhood programs, and adults-only 1940s Dance Hall celebrations.

The RV/MV Hall of Fame in Elkhart showcases all kinds of recreational vehicles in all shapes and sizes from various decades. It's a must-see for people interested in RVs or anyone who wants to see the classic vehicles that Americans have been driving along the roads and vacationing in for the past 90 years.

Popular vehicles and exhibits on display include Mae West's 1931 Chevrolet Housecar, a "Road Back in Time" walking tour, and a Tennessee Traveler Motorhome. Visitors can also see how the interiors and appliances of recreational vehicles have changed over the years. The museum displays trailers, motorhomes, photos, and memorabilia dating back to the 1920s, all within a huge showroom.

The First Christian Church in Columbus was designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1942. It has a non-traditional look, with rectangular shapes and a rectangular tower standing 160 feet high. It is noted to be one of the first churches in the United States built in such a contemporary style. The materials, exterior and interior, are mostly buff brick and limestone.

All members of the public are encouraged to check out the regular services hosted by the church. The Sanctuary can seat about 900 people. And this religious establishment provides numerous ways to connect with the surrounding community.

Hiking Monon Trail Is One Of The Best Things To Do In Indiana

The Monon Trail was once a railroad trail that is now open to the public.

As it is no longer a rail line, the trail is safe for pedestrians to enjoy.

In Northwest Indiana, there are almost eight miles of trails, and in Indianapolis, there are about 24 miles of trails.

They all connect at some point, and there are trailheads in several spots along the length of the trail.

One of the most popular areas of the trail is the Monon High Bridge, one of the best hidden gems in the Midwest .

The Indiana Wine Trail is a great way to learn a little bit more about Southeast Indiana history as well.

The wineries in the area still follow the traditional methods that Swiss settlers used when they planted the first vineyards in the area.

Children’s Museum Of Indianapolis For Family Fun

If you are visiting Indiana with the family, you must go to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

The Big Four Pedestrian Bridge crosses the Ohio River and connects Jefferson Indiana to Louisville Kentucky.

The bridge served as a railroad bridge until 1968 and was almost abandoned.

In 2014 the bridge was converted into a massive pedestrian and biking bridge.

Now Jefferson locals and visitors love to take a stroll across the Ohio River and step into Louisville.

It is a really cool and unique thing to do in Indiana, and I guess Kentucky as well!

Indianapolis Museum Of Art

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is located at Newfields, which is a large campus area in the city.

With over 150 acres of museums, parks, and historic buildings, Newfields itself is full of unique Indiana attractions.

One of those museums is the art museum.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art features an extensive collection of art that spans almost every major art movement.

It also frequently has new exhibits on display.

If you are looking for the best way to spend an afternoon, Newfields and the Art Museum are a great choices.

Brown County State Park

The Brown County State Park is located in Nashville Indiana in the southern half of the state.

It is a popular Indiana tourist attraction in the area because of the beautiful views and great outdoor facilities.

At over 15,000 acres it is one of the biggest State Parks in the country.

There is a lake for swimming, plenty of hiking and biking trails, and horseback riding.

‘America’s Christmas Hometown’ has an amusement park that is one of the best amusement parks in the Midwest , Holiday World.

There is also a Christmas store, a Santa Claus Museum and Village, and a toy shop.

Ohio River Scenic Byway Road Trip

The Ohio River Scenic Byway runs through Indiana as well as two other states.

In Indiana, you’ll pass through charming small towns, and it is one of the most fun Midwest road trips .

The road trip takes you through Vevay, the ‘4th Coolest Small Town In America’.

Stop in Madison to sample homemade cider and go for a hike.

Then end your road trip in Newburgh where you can stroll along the Riverwalk, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, and stop into the cute boutique shops.

The Ohio River Scenic Byway is a great way to see Indiana.

If you are searching, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly when packing when heading to Indiana.

Buttermilk Falls

The 48-acre natural area was donated to Indiana County Parks in 1995 by the Keystone-Conemaugh Group, owners of the nearby Conemaugh Generating Station. Jimmy Stewart Museum

The Jimmy Stewart Museum, located in Indiana, Pennsylvania (Jimmy’s hometown) highlights its namesake’s accomplishments in film, radio, and TV. Underground Railroad

Blairsville's location along the Conemaugh River at the southern edge of Indiana County provided many opportunities for growth. From its beginning in the early 1800s, the town benefitted from road, canal and railroad traffic. Many of the people who settled in the area had strict religious convictions and they became a strong force in the Underground Railroad movement.

Smicksburg, PA

Tucked away in a secluded section of Southwestern Pennsylvania are the communities of Smicksburg and Dayton. Though small in size, these towns have much to offer. Beautiful, country scenery, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, is just one of the attractions. These two small communities and the surrounding area are home to over 325 Old Order Amish families. 

Ghost Town Trail

The Ghost Town Trail totals 36 miles in Indiana and Cambria Counties, Pennsylvania. The trail was originally established in 1991 when the Kovalchick Salvage Company donated 16 miles of the former Ebensburg & Black Lick Railroad to Indiana County.

Post-tribune | dunes tourism board president holds appointed seat — for now, commissioners president plans to call for board restructuring.

After a dramatic interplay between himself and the Porter County Council Tuesday night Mitch Peters, president of the Indiana Dunes Tourism Board, managed to hold onto his post – for now.

Council President Mike Brickner, R-At-Large, Vice President Red Stone, R-1st, and member Andy Vasquez, R-4th, voted to remove him, while members Greg Simms, D-3rd, Sylvia Graham, D-At-Large, and Andy Bozak, R-At-Large, voted to retain him resulting in a tie because member Jeremy Rivas, D-2nd, was absent.

Board of Commissioners President Jim Biggs, R-North, said by phone Wednesday that he will call for a restructuring of that board, removing Peters by default, at the next commissioners meeting on May 14. He said an analysis of the state statute dictating the makeup of county tourism boards reveals those serving must be employed in tourism.

Peters is a defense attorney involved with facilities for men coming out of addiction.

Peters, flanked by new Dunes Tourism CEO Christine Livingston and five members of that board’s executive committee, addressed the council at the end of its meeting, offering up apologies for the handling of the departure of former IDT CEO Lorelei Weimer, who left the post in January with a $225,000 severance package.

“We weren’t as accountable as we should have been,” he said. “We appreciate that each of you are accountable to the voters of Porter County. This isn’t going to happen again.”

Peters and Livingston gave a brief rundown of the changes they are making to IDT to make it more community-focused with an emphasis on partnerships with sister organizations such as the Porter County Expo Center and Memorial Opera House.

While he remained polite and complimentary of the “wisdom” represented by the IDT board members in attendance, Brickner, after speaking at length following an absence in recent months for medical reasons, called for a vote to remove Peters, who was reappointed by the council to the 11-member board in January. Peters has been on the board for 14 years and president for 13.

“Our responsibility as a council is to the taxpayers. I consider our appointments as an extension of the council,” Brickner said. “I am disappointed. This is not personal, but when we appoint someone, I expect transparency.”

Stone said he spoke to Weimer for four hours on the eve of her non-disclosure agreement taking effect. “She didn’t lie. She didn’t cheat. And she didn’t steal. That’s what you said,” he said to Peters. “I believe we were misled to pass the $225,000.”

Vasquez said his vote to approve the settlement would have been different if he had had more information. “I think I was misled,” he said.

Bozak, who pointed out that he voted against the settlement, also argued against removing Peters. “I also think if we remove Mitch at this time that causes a lot of turmoil,” he said.

Graham agreed. “Am I happy how it turned out? No, but we have to go on,” she said. “To say that he has to go after all his years of expertise . . . He screwed up, but haven’t we all?”

IDT board member Don Ensign, who would be one of the board members removed for lack of a tourism background, according to Biggs, defended Peters, saying the driver behind all the board’s choices during the settlement negotiation with Weimer was making sure “Lorelei was given a great deal of dignity and respect.”

He said the board was “absolutely wrong” in not apprising the council of that process while it was happening.

“I didn’t know I was going to be called in here and called a liar. You’ve called me a liar,” Peters said, adding that he was not going to get into details about Weimer because there is a non-disclosure agreement regarding her departure.

“Now,” Stone replied. “Now there is.”

Simms wanted to table the vote until Rivas could be present.

“Well, we have a quorum,” Vasquez responded.

Weimer, who sat at the back of the room throughout the meeting, was invited to come to the microphone. IDT board member Richard Riley spoke up to say the vote on Peters needed to happen first.

The council looked to their attorney Harold Harper for clarification on the rules of order. He said it was at the discretion of the council president whether Weimer was allowed to speak before or after the vote.

She was invited up. She told the council she was told by the IDT board and its attorney David Hollenbeck that she could either retire or be fired. She added that while it was clearly a violation of the Open Door Law, she was told the IDT board had the votes lined up to fire her.

“I said I could not take this risk and Dave said, ‘That’s probably a good decision,’” Weimer said. “Nobody has any idea what this man has done to me since August.”

“Are you talking about me?” Peters asked her.

“Yes,” she replied.

Carmel plans arboretum-like food hall with playground on the Monon

Move over Garage Food Hall at Bottleworks. Step aside, Yard at Fishers District. There could be a new food emporium in town.

And it has a chance to be better than anything else out there, Carmel officials said

Carmel and property owner Pedcor are considering a cavernous multi-purpose food hall and public space along the Monon Trail with restaurant counters and retailers, a central lawn, an entertainment stage, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a rooftop deck and a botanical section as part of a $47 million development.

“This could be a game-changer for our county,” said City Councilor Jeff Worrell. “An amenity that is a natural winter complement to the Monon Trail.”

'It has elevated the city': Hotel Carmichael eyes expansion, claims big wins

A preliminary design, which could change, shows a long fieldhouse-style structure on the south end of the recently razed Monon Square shopping center ,  once home to Union Brewing and a slew of other small businesses.

“This project is a completely unique thing that nobody has proposed,” Carmel Redevelopment Commission Executive Director Henry Mestetsky said, “a place where people want to spend time whether they’re hungry or not.”

Mestetsky said the food hall would fill a void in Carmel’s public gathering spaces, an indoor site that could be used year-round, as opposed to a seasonal attraction such as Christkindlmarkt or warm weather venue, like Midtown Plaza .

“We have tremendous outdoor civic space but not an indoor one, not a free one, where you can go without buying something if you don’t want,” he said. “It doesn’t exist much anywhere in American cities. We want it to be more than a food hall.”

A regional draw

Mestetsky cited the success of the Garage at the Bottleworks mixed use development on Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis as an example of the growing public appetite for food halls. And he said a Carmel hall could even draw customers from the northside who might otherwise drive to the Garage.

Carmel’s version, called the Union at Monon Square, would be the south section build-out of the former strip mall between Rangeline Road and the Monon Trail and north of City Center Drive. Besides the food hall, the southern section would have 190 apartments, offices and a 600-space parking garage.

The food hall would occupy the first two stories of a five-story building, with the top three floors as offices. It would include:

• Eight hot food counters, preferably local, artisan purveyors, and six retail or specialty food vendors, selling foods such as gourmet popcorn, olive oil, cupcakes or deli foods.
• A public green in the center.
• "Social stairs,” or open, wide staircases designed for seating, where visitors can relax while watching over of activity in the hall or their children playing.
• An entertainment stage for live acts and a large screen television.
• A playground for children inside and outside on a grassy area next to the Monon.
• Real and artificial trees and plants inside, replicating an arboretum.
• Upstairs event spaces for smaller weddings or corporate events.
• A rooftop deck for events.

Grants sought

Official s cautioned that the $47 million project, at this point, would be contingent on receiving a $10 million grant from the Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI grants) and a $7 million Hamilton County Tourism grant.

Officials would also use an $8 million construction loan and $22 million in tax-increment financing bond proceeds from the larger Monon Square development project, which includes apartments, condos and offices on the north side of the property.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation earlier this month awarded the Central Indiana Regional Development Authority a $45 Million READI 2.0 grant, based on a general vision for the region. Now, the towns, cities and counties, including Carmel, will submit their individual project applications to CIRDA , which will send them to the IEDC for selection.

Councilor Adam Aasen said he likes Carmel’s chances at a READI grant, which are designed to spark regional economic activity and foster governmental cooperation.

“This is a unique submission that includes a lot of partners, on the private side, county tourism and the parks department,” he said. ”And it could attract people from outside the area to spend money.”

Pedcor, which owns part of the property and is a partner with the city on the upscale Hotel Carmichael , could team up again on the food hall or another developer could get involved.

The council unanimously approved a non-binding resolution in support of pursuing the project further if it gets the grants. Even without outside funds the council could go ahead using other cash.

But neither Aasen nor Worrell wanted to speculate on whether that was likely.

“There are a lot of big ‘ifs’,” Worrell said. “We should carefully look at it this if we consider it without grant funding. It would not be an easy lift.”

Food halls thriving

Visit Hamilton County, the county’s tourism office, said it would conduct a cost analysis study if the project moves forward. Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Karen Radcliff said the office did some research for Carmel and found that food halls can be effective revenue generators.

“They are increasingly popular and can be an asset,” she said. The most successful are those that lots of people can easily walk to in populated areas like downtown and Midtown Carmel, she added.

Carmel’s location is not only walkable but the 600-car parking garage would have at least 75% free parking spaces, in addition to mostly free parking at the northern section garage, Mestetsky said.

The number of food halls in the United States has increased dramatically in recent years, especially in mid-sized cities and suburbs, according to a “State of Food Halls, 2023,” a study led by Garrick Brown, of Brown Consulting.

Between 2019 and 2023, food hall operations increased from 220 to 340, with another 127 in construction or planning at the time. As restaurants have struggled since the Coronavirus pandemic, entrepreneurs have turned to the food halls, a lower-cost alternative, the study found.

Shared freezer, storage and kitchen space, along with savings because of smaller staffs and menus, keep expenses down.

The study found location and walkability were the key to success.

“This remains a high volume, low margin business that depends on optimal foot traffic,’ according to the study. “But poor site selection will remain near the top of the list for failed projects.”

The design of the hall is also important, according to Brown’s report.

“They’re carefully and strategically designed to engage the senses and create hyper efficiencies. They invite guests to linger. They provide for a wide range of programming.”

Radcliff said the tourism office is still reviewing whether to award Carmel the $7 million grant it is requesting.

Welcome to the mixed messages for the Great Eclipse 2024 in northern Ohio.

Gregg Mervis, president and CEO Akron Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau , says he gets it.

Why would county officials urge residents to stay home while at the same time folks like him want people to come visit Greater Akron to take in the total eclipse on April 8?

The reality is, Mervis said, the visitors are going to come no matter what.

And they could number in the tens of thousands with some estimates doubling the population of northern Ohio by visitors coming here to take in the celestial event that will only come once in a lifetime.

It is the crush of visitors that has planners worried particularly once it is all over and everyone tries to go home all at once.

The combination of local residents and visitors are expected to overwhelm roads and interstates in the region with traffic jams for the ages possible.

So this is all why, Mervis said, tourism folks are encouraging out-of-town visitors to arrive early and stay a day later.

There are some 5,000 hotel rooms in Summit County. And from what he's hearing, they are filling fast.

"Hotels are expecting to sell out," he said.

Eclipse is the 'opportunity' of a lifetime for Akron

For folks in the tourism business, it doesn't get any bigger or better than this.

It isn't likely that Akron, or Canton for that matter, will ever host a modern Super Bowl, but being in the path of a total eclipse might be the closest the region might ever get in terms of the number of potential visitors.

There may be no single event or stage bigger than this, Mervis said, so that's why it's important for the city and county to get it right.

"This is expected to be the largest influx of people into our community for a single-day event," he said.

The hope is visitors will come for the eclipse but come back again later to take in all the region has to offer from historical sites like Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens to natural wonders like the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Come for the eclipse and stay for the fun

Akron is well positioned along the path of totality to be in easy distance of a large number of potential visitors making it an attractive destination.

Mervis said they have been working with area restaurants and bars and attractions to make sure there's plenty to see and do before and after the eclipse.

They also want every business from gas stations to restaurants to be prepared for the potential influx of a lot of visitors all at once.

And the hope is, he said, local residents will join in the fun, too, and attend a special event and try out some of the special craft beers local breweries have created, and sample unique dishes and treats at area restaurants and ice cream places.

Local clothing companies − like Rubber City Clothing − have special designs to commemorate the big day.

Even some local touristy places are joining in, too.

The Akron Zoo is hosting special activities on the day of the eclipse and giving guests the chance to help track how the animals respond at the peak.

The Akron Art Museum is also planning special activities the day of the eclipse and a special exhibition of eclipse and solar-related art.

And the Summit County Fairgrounds plans to open the day of the eclipse for campers or those looking for a place to park and view the eclipse.

Parking is $30 and campsites are $50 a night.

In all, Mervis said, there are 30 or so events already planned around the county for locals and visitors.

"We're just trying to make sure everyone has access to all the activities that are out there," he said. "There's a ton of stuff to do.

"We have the best seat in the house for viewing the eclipse."

What's the eclipse timeline in Greater Akron?

The eclipse will start in Texas and then make its way across the country, passing over Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana before arriving in Ohio.

For Greater Akron, the eclipse will begin at 1:59 p.m. as the moon slowly casts its shadow across the sun.

Totality —or complete darkness — in Akron will be at 3:15 p.m. and last two minutes and 49 seconds.

It will slowly get brighter outside, and the eclipse will end at 4:29 p.m.

Findlay will experience totality between 3:10 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

For Cleveland, it will be totally dark between 3:13 p.m. 3:17 p.m.

And in Erie, Pennsylvania, the totality will be between 3:16 p.m. and 3:20 p.m.

What to expect when the eclipse happens?

Things will progress very slowly.

It will seem like nightfall once totality arrives.

Things will seem a bit off as it will get darker from above instead of from the west like it does when the sunsets at night.

At the peak of totality, it will be as dark as night in northern Ohio and street lights will come and birds will likely retreat to their nests.

The temperature is expected to drop by as many as 15 degrees.

And then, it will all happen in reverse.

It will get progressively brighter as more and more of the sun becomes exposed.

Virginia EMT is latest U.S. tourist arrested in Turks and Caicos after ammo allegedly found in luggage

A 30-year-old U.S. man was arrested in Turks and Caicos last weekend after ammunition was allegedly found in his luggage, CBS News has learned, making him the latest of several Americans in recent months who found themselves in a similar predicament in the British territory. 

Tyler Wenrich was taken into custody after officials allegedly found two bullets in his backpack April 20 as he was about to board a cruise ship.

Possessing a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously often able to just pay a fine. In February, however, a court order mandated that even tourists in the process of leaving the country are subject to prison time.

The Virginia EMT and father now faces the potential of a mandatory minimum prison sentence of up to 12 years.

"I feel like, as a very honest mistake, that 12 years is absurd," his wife, Jeriann Wenrich, told CBS News Friday. 

Wenrich says her husband had been on the island for less than a day when the arrest occurred.

"My son's only 18 months old, and I just don't want to him to grow up without a dad," Wenrich said.

There are now at least four American tourists facing the possibility of lengthy prison sentences for similar charges, including a 72-year-old man, Michael Lee Evans, who was arrested in December and pled guilty to possession of seven rounds of ammo. He appeared before the court on Wednesday via a video conference link. Currently on bail in the U.S. for medical reasons, Evans has a sentencing hearing in June. A fifth person, Michael Grim of Indiana, served nearly six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to mistakenly bringing ammo in his checked luggage for a vacation. 

Ryan Watson, a 40-year-old father of two from Oklahoma, was released from a Turks and Caicos jail on $15,000 bond Wednesday. Following a birthday vacation with his wife, he was arrested April 12 when airport security allegedly found four rounds of hunting ammo in his carry-on bag earlier this month. 

His wife, Valerie Watson, flew home to Oklahoma Tuesday after learning she would not be charged. However, as part of his bond agreement, her husband must remain on the island and check in every Tuesday and Thursday at the Grace Bay Police Station while his case moves forward.

In an interview Friday from the island, Ryan Watson told CBS News that he checked the bag before he packed it.

"I opened it up and kind of give it a little shimmy, didn't see anything, didn't hear anything," he said.

TSA also acknowledged that officers missed the ammo when Watson's bag was screened at the checkpoint on April 7 at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.

In a statement provided to CBS News Friday, a TSA spokesperson said that "four rounds of ammunition were not detected" in Watson's bag "during the security screening."

The spokesperson said that "an oversight occurred that the agency is addressing internally."

"It was my mistake," Ryan Watson said. "It was very innocent. And I just pray that, compassion and consideration, because there was zero criminal intent."

In a statement Friday, the Turks and Caicos government said that it "reserves the right to enforce its legislation and all visitors must follow its law enforcement procedures."

Following the CBS News report on Ryan Watson earlier this week, the State Department reissued a warning to American tourists traveling to Turks and Caicos to "carefully check their luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons."

An Oklahoma woman was reunited Tuesday with her young children after being detained for almost two weeks in Turks and Caicos Islands for allegedly violating their strict guns and ammunition law. Her husband is being held in the British Overseas Territory near the Bahamas.

Ryan and Valerie Watson, who live in Oklahoma, left for Turks and Caicos Islands on April 7 to celebrate the 40th birthdays of Ryan and two friends. When they went through security for their return flight, their carry-on was flagged and searched and officials found a Ziploc bag of bullets.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," said Ryan, "and I recognized them and I thought, oh man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there."

The two shared their story virtually with NBC10 Boston last week before their first court hearing. They were stuck on the island, their passports confiscated, separated from their young son and daughter.

"When I heard that, I immediately was terrified because I was like, we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home. And this is such an innocent mistake that we didn't even know we weren't– we didn't even know it was there. So yeah, my immediate thought was our kids and them being, you know, parentless for, for that long," Valerie said.

The Watsons were questioned and charged with possession of ammunition. In 2022, Turks and Caicos passed an amendment with stiffer penalties for possession of weapons or ammunition, increasing the mandatory minimum prison sentence to 12 years.

Last September, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a travel alert warning Americans after a tourist from Indiana got an eight-month prison sentence for possession of ammunition.

The alert says: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI. If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody. You are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures," the alert continued.

Bryan Hagerich was detained by Turks and Caicos authorities after a family vacation in February when hunting ammunition was found in his luggage before he boarded a flight home. He said the ammunition was found in a bag he frequently used for weekend hunting trips.

"I've been here for almost 70 days now after posting bail. I've been out, right now just waiting to go to the hearing. That's where my case would be heard, then following that would be sentencing," Hagerich said.

Hagerich, who played baseball professionally and was once drafted by the Florida Marlins, lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two young kids. He spent eight days in prison before posting bail and is awaiting a May 3 court hearing.

"It's incredibly scary. You know, you just don't know what the next day may bring. You know, what path this may take. You know, you're in a completely different culture, a different country by yourself. You know, it's certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It's been the worst 70 days of my life," Hagerich said.

He and the Watsons are also dealing with the financial strain of paying for an extended stay and being away from their jobs.

"We've already talked, and we're like, what if, you know, what if we lose our house? Which, when we moved to Oklahoma, we built a home that we thought was our forever home. And to think that this is going to ruin us..." said an emotional Valerie.

"This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan said.

"I'm just very anxious, eager to get home to my family," said Hagerich. "This has been too long. You know, it's just had so much irreparable harm to my family, that, you know, I just can't continue to see them struggle anymore. I just want to hug my family and start this healing process together."

After their hearing yesterday, Ryan was sent to jail; he was granted bail at a hearing on Wednesday. Charges were dropped for Valerie on Monday and she is now back in Oklahoma with her two children.

The judges in Turks and Caicos Islands are able to make exceptions to the mandatory minimum sentence if they determine there are "exceptional circumstances" in a case.

NBC10 Boston reached out to the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands' tourism bureau about the Watsons' situation and have not heard back. We contacted the State Department and a spokesperson told NBC10 Boston they are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos and that, "The U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas."

The spokesperson added, "When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States… As our security alert from September 22, 2023 states, in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), firearms, ammunition, and other weapons are not permitted. TCI authorities strictly enforce all firearms related laws. The penalty for traveling to TCI with a firearm, ammunition, or other weapon is a minimum custodial sentence of twelve (12) years. If a traveler brings a firearm or ammunition into TCI, the U.S. Department of State will not be able to secure their release from custody. Travelers are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures."

The State Department said they are unable to provide the number of U.S. citizens charged with weapon/ammunition possession since the department is unable to track local arrests.

But law enforcement officials in Turks and Caicos Islands acknowledged Wednesday in a statement that three Americans are out on bail in such cases.

"The Firearms Ordinance applies to all persons present within the Turks and Caicos Islands regardless of status or origin," read the statement from the offices of the attorney general and the director of public prosecution.

Also Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a new statement urging all travelers to take care looking for weapons or ammunition when leaving the U.S.

" Carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing from the United States ," the warning says in bold, going on to note that enforcement in Turks and Caicos Islands is strict, legally declared weapons aren't allowed in the territory and TSA screening may not turn up ammunition in baggage on the way out of the country.

" If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, even inadvertently, we will not be able to secure your release from custody. You are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures," the statement said.
