Wow, we're so glad you had a great time! Thanks for sharing those great pictures as well! We hope to see you back.

It was a great tour with a hostile welcome. Here's the text I received 90 Minutes before our tour. SEAL Tour - Must sign in 30 minutes prior to tour @ Ticket Booth, 825 West Harbor Dr, Seaport Village, San Diego, CA, 92101. Late Check-in may result in forfeited seat. Use of Ride Share services is highly recommended. Missed tours times are non-refundable. So my first experience is oh gosh I have to get down there ! Anxiety, rushing and being faced with the forfeiture of $160 dollars is not good for my attitude. As it turned out we had MORE than enough time. The woman in the ticket booth was completely frazzled. I told my hub she must be having a bad day. The notice only needs a slight tweek in the script. I felt threatened. I hope they change their threat/boarding instructions. Please ask me, I have ideas. Our captain Michael was sweet and helpful. He was also very good at driving the vehicle. Our guide Charlie was also very nice. His narration was a bit dry. We compared him to the duck tour in Boston which we visited in October. The duck tour was a scream! Ben was so funny and the social bonding of quacking at everyone was hilarious! The Seal tour was much more sedate. Lovely tho. The cruise on the bay gave me a wonderful breeze and great view of San Diego sights. I recommend but hope they ease up the threatening notification.

Our family took the tour while on vacation and had so much fun! Plenty of parking- discount validation. Staff were knowledgeable and fun. The weather was perfect on the day we went. The kids got a kick out of the sea lions. The vehicle accommodates those who are unable to climb up the stairs. A must for! Family fun

This is a great 90 minute harbor cruise, which starts on land while sightseeing and learning history of old town San Diego. Once you move from land to sea, you see lots of seals and marine life while hearing about the bay, the Naval areas and Shelter Island and surrounding history. Such a fun trip, I highly recommend it!

Although we live in San Diego, we don't always have the time to do the stuff tourists do. So when we were planning A California Coastal Cruise, we decided to book the Seal Tour. I purchased the tickets in advance. Upon arrival, we signed our names to the manifest. Waited until 2:45pm for our bus. It took some time for the previous to get down and for us to board the bus. We were on our way a little after 3pm. About 5 minutes into our tour, our bus overheated and we had to pull aside. After few tries, our Captain, Kyle informed us that there is another bus on it's way and that we will need to move once it arrives. Soon after, the new bus arrived and we transferred. 1st mate/Tour guide was Salem. She was very helpful, patient and informative. We learned things we didn't know about and saw Seal Lions close up. They are HUGE! Even with the set back, we had a wonderful experience. My husband and I were talking about doing this tour again in the future.

It's a great compliment to hear that one of our visitors would come back. We'd love to see you visit us again! You’ll also find our tours in Nashville, Saint Augustine, Savannah, Key West, Boston, and Washington DC.

A fun weekend event! This tour was enjoyable and comfortable. A full street and boat tour lead by personable and knowledgeable Captain and 1st mate ;-) The seals were out in abundance, although taking a midday nap, they woke up just to wave and say hi! Definitely a fun thing to do and enjoy Seaport Village when you're done!

We had a wonderful tour last week with Captain chill and first mate Kim. She was so informative and it really made it a fantastic tour. We will definitely be coming back with our grandson.

These are all things we love to hear. Thank you so much for your comments! Our guides and storytellers take pride in what they do. Come visit us again in one of our other destinations.

This is a very fun and exciting tour, especially if you have kids in your group. It's only about an hour and a half to two hours. It's a fun way to see the city and the ocean. Our tour guide, first mate Brent was very knowledgeable and fun. A word of caution... The boat travels slower than the car portion of this tour. Which makes it a little bit rocky on the waves, two people in our party got a little seasick. Lastly, I would highly recommend booking this tour directly with San Diego seal tours. Do not book from Viator a third-party!!!While you will save some money, this is a terrible company to work with. I purchased tickets on their website and when I got the confirmation email the time slot was different. I immediately called the company. They explained since I was outside the 24 hour cancellation policy. There was nothing they could do to cancel. Just a different time in the day. The recommendation to me was to purchase another set of tickets for the correct timeslot that I wanted. Basically I was going to be out $300 for no reason I called San Diego seal tour company the morning of our reservation, Steven at the company was extremely helpful in changing the timeslot for us, it seemed simple enough and was able to accommodate us. I would definitely recommend this tour, just don't buy tickets from a third-party

SEAL Tours - Sea and Land Adventures

Make a Splash on San Diego's Only Amphibious Tour

Make a Splash on the SEAL! Experience San Diego as it was meant to be experienced...by land and by sea! The new "Hydra Terras" provide you with the unique ability to see America's Finest City on San Diego's only amphibious sightseeing tour. This 90-minute fully-narrated journey departs from Seaport Village located at 500 Kettner Blvd. As you travel along the beautiful Big Bay by land, you will learn about the early fishing industry, the people as well as the history of this 14-mile long working bay. The tour on land takes you past the San Diego International Airport dedicated to aviator Charles Lindbergh, just one of the many people you will hear about on your tour. Then, you will splash down into San Diego Bay off Shelter Island, where you begin your water-tour segment of the journey. As the SEAL travels through the north end of the Big Bay, keep your eyes peeled for a chance encounter with a California Brown Pelican, the majestic Blue Heron, or perhaps a Sea Lion or two. Learn about the important role the military plays in San Diego. The Big Bay provides views of Point Loma, home to the Cabrillo National Monument, Naval Air Station North Island, the Point Loma Submarine Base, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Navy's marine mammal training center. The return trip takes you, once again, back up on land where you will return to your starting point via Harbor Drive while you pass the Maritime Museum, the Cruise Ship Terminal and the USS Midway Museum.

San Diego Seal Tours History

Old Town Trolley Tours first began providing guided trolley tours in San Diego over 30 years ago. Shortly after launching the popular hop-on, hop-off service, the CEO of Old Town Trolley Tours came up with the idea to also offer visitors the chance to see San Diego from both sea and land while on the same tour. Thus, Old Town Trolley Tours purchased a Hydra-Terra vehicle capable of performing as a bus while on land and a boat while in water and a whole distinct brand was on its way.

Some guests may recognize this type of tour—one that combines land and water components into one exciting outing—from other cities, where more often than not it’s called a “duck tour.” However, Old Town Trolley decided to call their new product San Diego Seal Tours as an homage to the Navy SEALS who live and work in the San Diego area.

What’s to See on a San Diego Seal Tour

As a guest of San Diego Seal Tours, you’ll have your choice of two different spots to embark for your journey: Seaport Village and the Embarcadero. Seaport Village is a nearly 100,000 square-foot establishment where you’ll find dozens of places to grab a meal or spend some time shopping. It’s not far from Petco Park and the New Children’s Museum . The Embarcadero departure point is just steps north of the USS Midway Museum .

While a lot of variables can come into play, San Diego Seal tours typically last about 90 minutes. This allows for roughly 30 minutes spent on land, before the next hour takes place in the water. The bus portion of the tour will take you along the coastline, in the shadow of the city’s striking skyline, and you’ll pass such landmarks as the  Star of India , the Maritime Museum of San Diego , and the USS  Recruit , a landlocked training ship affectionately nicknamed “USS  Neversail .”

Plunge straight from land into the majestic waters of the San Diego Harbor for the second half of your Duck Tour without ever having to leave your seat. Traveling through the waters you will learn all about the extensive military history of San Diego, as well as witness playful sea lions enjoying their natural habitat. While you float leisurely through the bay, taking in the scenery from the shaded Hydra-Terras, you will see a variety of sealife going about their day. You may even get a surprise visit from passing dolphins. Other highlights of the water portion of the tour include Scripps Institute of Oceanography, North Island Naval Air Station, and the Marine Mammal Training Center. Check out San Diego from a whole new perspective, taking in the San Diego coastline and the visually stunning mansions of Point Loma.

San Diego Seal Tours offer a superb way to learn the historical significance of San Diego from land and sea for a truly unique sightseeing experience. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the unexpected, from a ghost in the window of the Whaley House to a nearby dolphin popping up alongside you in the San Diego Bay. The added bonus is that you get to do it all from an amphibious vehicle, which is a treat in itself. You can be confident in the knowledge that your amphibious tour vehicle is 100% DMV and California Coast Guard approved, and that it conforms to all water safety regulations. The entire adventure will be long photo opportunity, as you enjoy spectacular views of San Diego as you’ve never seen it before. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy!

Tips for Taking a San Diego Seal Tours

  • San Diego Seal Tours depart every hour on the hour from Seaport Village and the Embarcadero. Reservations are required, which means if you want to purchase walk-up tickets, you’ll need to do so at least 30 minutes before the tour you desire to take departs.
  • Parking near the San Diego Seal Tour departure points can be challenging to find, especially during peak periods like the summer months or holiday season. As a result, it’s recommended you plan on arriving at least an hour before your tour is set to leave.
  • Be sure to dress in layers for your San Diego Seal Tour. Even on an otherwise warm day, the temperature out on the water can be much cooler than it is on land. Being able to add or subtract layers as you need will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible all throughout your tour.
  • San Diego Seal Tours are able to accommodate individuals requiring wheelchair assistance, but they request 24 hours of notice so as to be able make arrangements for the appropriate vehicle to be available.
  • San Diego Seal Tours depart from near the San Diego Visitor Information Center and the popular USS Midway Museum. If you think you’ll be interested in stopping at either of these sites during your visit, you could plan to do so on the same day you take your San Diego Seal tour. This would make that day’s logistics easier to manage.

Things to See in San Diego on the SEAL Tour

Image of fountains at Seaport Village

Seaport Village

Seaport Village , one of downtown San Diego’s most popular tourist attractions, encompasses four miles of winding cobblestone pathways framed by ponds, lakes, fountains and beautiful landscaping. This lovely waterfront complex is nostalgic of the San Diego harbor centuries ago and features more than 50 shops, casual eateries, fine dining and a variety of entertainment venues.

Star of India at Maritime Museum

The Star of India was built in 1863 and is the world’s oldest active sailing ship. The ship sailed from Great Britain to India and then to New Zealand before becoming a salmon hauler from Alaska to California. The magnificent ship was lovingly restored after its retirement and became an official historic landmark that still sails at least once a year. Today, the Star of India is a part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego . Visitors from all over the world can tour the ship and learn about its fascinating history.

USS Midway

The USS Midway was an aircraft carrier for the United States Navy that was first commissioned at the end of World War II. The largest ship of its kind in the world until 1955, the USS Midway was the first ship that was too big to transit through the Panama Canal. During its 47 years of service, the USS Midway served in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert storm. After being decommissioned in 1995, it became a museum and now offers visitors an incredible close up look at the history of this significant vessel as well as the fascinating life on-board a naval aircraft carrier.

San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport is formerly known as Lindbergh Field after the renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh. Lindberg made history when he flight tested the “Spirit of St. Louis”.

Shelter Island

Shelter Island is a neighborhood in Point Loma. Shelter Island is actually not an island because it is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. Before it was built up into dry land in 1934, it was just a sandbank in the San Diego Bay that was only visible during low tide. Today, this tiny area that measures 1.2 miles long by a few hundred feet wide, is home to hotels, restaurants, marinas and is known as the premier destination for super-yachts because of its deep access.

San Diego Seals and Sea Lions in the harbor

San Diego Sea Lions

California Sea Lions are famous for their playful, intelligent behavior and indisputable cuteness. And observing them in their natural habitat is one of the most unforgettable experiences you’ll have in San Diego. There are several places where you can see these adorable creatures doing what comes naturally – hanging around in the sand, lounging in the sun and playing in the water.

Point Loma

A scenic seaside community, Point Loma is known for its multi-million dollar mansions that dot the rocky hillsides. A peninsula, Point Loma defines San Diego Bay and separates it from the Pacific Ocean. It’s here that visitors come to catch dramatic waves, explore tide pools and enjoy the views of the bay and the San Diego skyline from the lighthouse. There are also a myriad of restaurants, art galleries, shops and more.

North Island Naval Air Station

Located at the North end of the Coronado Peninsula in the San Diego Bay, the North Island Naval Air Station is the homeport of aircraft carriers for the United States Navy. An imposing sight sitting in the middle of the bay, it is one of the largest repair facilities for fighter jets.

Point Loma Submarine Base
Imagine viewing an active submarine base! The Point Loma Submarine Base was established in 1998 and serves the United States Navy.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest and largest centers for global science research. Visitors can tour the various buildings within the facility and view the Birch Aquarium and numerous exhibits that teach about the wonders of the ocean and marine species. Educational programs, events and live animal interactions are offered throughout the year.

The Marine Mammal Training Center

At the Marine Mammal Training Center, bottle-nose dolphins, California Sea Lions and other marine animals are trained to perform tasks such as ship and harbor protection, mine detection and clearance and equipment recovery. The animals serve the United States Navy and are housed and trained on site.

Stretching along the waterfront between the San Diego Convention Center and the cruise ship terminal, downtown San Diego’s Seaport Village and the harborside boardwalk are some of the best places to enjoy the more than 250 days of sunshine each year.

The area features spectacular views of the Coronado Bridge, Coronado Island and boats on the bay. There are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the view, or you can walk out onto the peninsula for a little exercise.

Adjacent to Seaport Village is The Headquarters, the former San Diego Police headquarters and jail. The Headquarters is now a revitalized entertainment spot with shops and some fabulous places to eat. Kids and teens will love popping into this area!

Seaport Village San Diego is home to a beautiful, historic carousel dating back to 1895.

Featuring 54 hand-carved animals and two chariots, the carousel has been delighting both children and adults for decades.

A bit of history:

The carousel was built in 1895 in Brooklyn, NY, by Charles I.D. Looff and had its debut in 1904 at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. In the 1950s, it moved to Pacific Ocean Park in Santa Monica, where it operated for about 20 years before moving to Washington. The carousel was relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1979, where it was part of the Portland City Dedication in 1982.

In 1991, Historic Carousels, Inc., did a complete restoration of the Fair Park Looff for the 1992 AmeriFlora international horticultural exhibition held in Columbus, Ohio. The Looff carousel then made its way to Burbank, CA in 1997, and in 2004 made its final move to San Diego, where it still resides today!

The cost to ride the carousel is $5 per person.

The promenade also provides an excellent vantage point for watching the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, where hundreds of boats sail through the harbor adorned with festive holiday lights.
