Museum of Tomorrow

Set in a massive futuristic building, the Museum of Tomorrow reveals a glimpse of life in the future. The Museo Inka is one of the world’s best museums on the Inca Empire. It’s filled with ancient mummies, crockery, jewellery, textiles, models, goldwork and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels). You can easily spend a few hours immersing yourself in the extraordinary world of the Incas.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

Originally built in Paris, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes was moved to Buenos Aires in the early 1900s. Housed in a beautiful building, the museum holds the largest collection of art in Latin America and an excellent collection of European art, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Best museums in South America

Our tours of South America take you to all the best museums across the continent, from the vivid history of the Incas, to a fascinating look into the future.

Empanadas are one of the most-loved South American dishes. Their name means ‘enbreaded’, or wrapped in bread, and they’re made by folding dough over a stuffing of meat, cheese or vegetables. They can be baked or fried, and you’ll find these tasty treats on streets all over the continent.

The Brazilians have been making moqueca for the past 300 years, and it’s the quintessential dish of Afro-Brazilian culture. Originally from Bahia, the dish is made from fresh fish mixed with coconut milk, tomatoes, garlic, onions, lime and coriander. Our Local Specialists will show you their favorite places to taste this delicious stew.

Traditional Asado

An asado is a traditional Argentine barbecue and a beloved part of the country’s culture. You’ll find a variety of meat such as beef, chicken, pork and chorizo, grilled on a parrilla (open fire). Served with red wine and salads, you can find asados on street corners across the country.

Best food in South America

The best South American vacations soak up the superb cuisine of the region, and we’ll show you all the top places to taste traditional Latin dishes.

South America Tours & Vacations

A Bolivian llama among the cactus in South America

Colorful, candid and everything in-between. South America beats to the rhythm of an infectious, eternal drum.

It is the sequined heat of Carnival and a cool breeze blowing across the Andes, a fiery Argentine tango and the soft silence of an Ecuadorian cloud forest. You taste it in the crackle of slow-cooked barbecue and the tang of a good pisco sour. About the only thing the continent lacks is monotony. From the rocky slopes of Galapagos to the dawn-lit ruins of Machu Picchu , South America is effervescent with sights, sounds and salsa. Now, pass the empanadas and let's talk adventure.

25 Best Places to Visit in South America, From the Wetlands of Brazil to Easter Island

Experts share their favorite spots across the continent.

Harrison Pierce is a freelance writer and digital nomad passionate about personal finance and travel. He is traveling full-time with the help of points and miles and enjoys connecting with people on the ground. His work has been published in Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, USA Today Blueprint, Matador Network, and other publications.

Gabriel_Amaral/Getty Images

As a digital nomad who works and travels full time, I spend a good portion of the year in South America, exploring countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru. From cosmopolitan cities and mountain villages to beautiful beaches and iconic landmarks, the continent offers countless incredible destinations and sights.

It can be challenging to narrow down the choices for a South American trip. With the help of Elisban Huarancca, an official tourism guide with Journeys Cusco in Peru, Eva Castro, owner of Creo Ecolodge in Jardin, Colombia, and Alexander Balardjischvili, CEO of C2Rio Tours & Travel , we’ve compiled a list of the 25 best places to visit in South America.

  • Best tourist destination: Machu Picchu, Peru
  • Underrated hidden gem: Jardín, Antioquia, Colombia
  • Best for families: Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Best for couples: Valparaíso, Chile
  • Best for solo travelers: Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Read on for the full list of unmissable spots for your South American itinerary.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Arguably one of the most famous places in the world, Machu Picchu is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The site was initially an Inca citadel, likely built in the 1450s and often called “The Lost City of the Incas.” Machu Picchu is about 50 miles from Cusco; you’ll take a train to Aguas Calientes and then a bus to the site. You can't visit without a tour guide, so make reservations well in advance.  “The visit to Machu Picchu can be all year round; different climatic factors help to understand the mysterious nature of Machu Picchu,” says Huarancca. However, if you're hoping to avoid rain, he recommends timing your visit between April and the end of October.

Jardín, Antioquia, Colombia

reisegraf/Getty Images

Jardín is a small town a few hours south of Medellín with colonial architecture, beautiful scenery, and lots to do. I stayed at Creo Ecolodge during my trip, and Castro offered plenty of recommendations. Take a tour of Cueva del Esplendor, the "Cave of Splendor," where you'll find a beautiful waterfall, or head to a nearby coffee farm to learn how Colombian coffee is produced. My favorite is Cafe Historias , which has some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. Castro says the best time of year to visit is August and September when there are very few travelers. This is also when the annual Jardín Film Festival takes place. It gets much busier in town from December through April, she adds.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

In Buenos Aires , one of my favorite cities in the world, you can find anything from tango shows and street art to the best steak you’ll ever eat. Each neighborhood has something special. Head to La Boca for beautiful murals along the streets, then tour the famous cemetery in Recoleta before stopping at a speakeasy in Palermo. There’s no shortage of fantastic things to do , and the city makes a wonderful home base for seeing more of Argentina.

Valparaíso, Chile

Patrick Donovan/Getty Images

Less than a two-hour drive from Santiago, this quirky coastal city was once home to 20th-century poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. Valparaíso is characterized by its eclectic, colorful hillside houses, antique funiculars, and sweeping ocean views. Plus, it's adjacent to Viña del Mar, where you'll find some of Chile's top beaches.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Andrew Peacock/Getty Images

The Galápagos Islands are perfect for nature lovers. Visitors can learn about the archipelago's unique biodiversity, go scuba diving, lounge on beaches, or embark on a multi-island cruise. You might also swim with sea lions or hang out with giant turtles.

Cocora Valley, Salento, Colombia

jmichaelmedia/Getty Images

Due west of Bogota is Cocora Valley, one of Colombia's most famous hiking destinations. You can take a day trip from the nearby town of Salento or do a multiday hike throughout the valley. There are campsites available for use if you choose to spend the night looking at the stars. It’s famous for having the tallest palm trees in the world, which stand around 200 feet tall and can live up to 200 years. The oversaturated green colors of the hills are stunning. Castro highly recommends going at "golden hour," early in the morning or late in the afternoon, for the best views.

The Rock of Guatapé, Colombia

Jens Otte/Getty Images

The town of Guatapé in northern Colombia, directly east of Medellín, is famous for its namesake Rock, which can be ascended via more than 700 steps. At the end of your climb, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of the town and the islands in the sprawling Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir. The town is reachable by bus and less than two hours from Medellín, making it a perfect weekend trip.  “The people here are more welcoming and warm,” says Castro. “When you are walking, you can find many smiling faces … It’s part of our culture.”

San Rafael, Antioqua, Colombia

Simaguang/Getty Images

San Rafael is excellent “if you really want to have the deepest connection with yourself and with nature,” says Castro. She recommends Vanadurga Ashram , a yoga sanctuary, for a retreat or to continue your practice while traveling here. “These places are really magical, and you can learn how to change your perspective," Castro adds.

San Rafael is known for its natural beauty, including mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. You can bird-watch, hike, or simply soak in nature. “People want to come to have an inner journey,” says Castro. “If that’s your goal — to find out something inside of you — I’d recommend places like San Rafael.”

The Lost City, Magdalena, Colombia

PetraKosonen/Getty Images

The Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida in Spanish, is located near Santa Marta in northern Colombia. It’s estimated to have been founded in the eighth or ninth centuries, making it hundreds of years older than Machu Picchu. The area is believed to have been home to around 2,000 people and about 170 terraces, with apparent spaces for living, working, and religious practice. Getting there requires a three- to six-day trek with a tour company. On the way, you'll see rare native plants and wildlife, which is an adventure in itself.

Cusco, Peru

PocholoCalapre/Getty Images

If you're interested in Inca ruins, Cusco is the perfect place. It makes a great starting point to reach Machu Picchu, but you can also see traces of the city's Incan origins alongside colonial architecture. Many travelers spend a few days here exploring and acclimating to the 11,150-foot elevation. (As a comparison, Denver has an elevation of 5,280 feet.) The winding streets, Baroque churches, and art and history museums will leave you charmed.

Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca, Peru

maylat/Getty Images

Close to Cusco in the Andes Mountains is Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain because of the colorful stripes on display year-round. The colors result from different mineral layers that were combined with melted ice to create rows of reds, yellows, purples, and greens.

Amazon Rain Forest, Peru

JarnoVerdonk/Getty Images

The Amazon rain forest spans eight countries and is almost 2.6 million square miles in size. You can visit the Peruvian Amazon from three areas: Manú National Park , Tambopata Province, and the city of Iquitos. Each provides something unique to tourists. The best option depends on what you want to see, how much time you can spend, and your budget.  “The only recommendation I can give to international travelers is to make reservations in advance and have good information about the places you will visit,” says Huarancca. “It is necessary to find out the type of food, drinks, and traditions that place has.”

Huacachina, Peru

Istvan Kadar Photography/Getty Images

Huarancca recommends visiting Huacachina, “a small oasis in the middle of the desert.” Located south of Lima and near the city of Ica, it's a desert village complete with rolling sand dunes on all sides. You can't swim in Huacachina Lagoon, but you can rent paddleboats to glide across the water. It’s the only natural oasis in all of South America, formed by underground aquifers.

Colca Canyon, Peru

Caroline Brundle Bugge/Getty Images

In Peru, Colca Canyon is another tourist attraction that you shouldn't miss, according to Huarancca. It’s one of the world’s deepest canyons (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) and you can take a day trip from Arequipa to see it or tackle a multiday trek for the most spectacular views. Either way, you're likely to see plenty of native wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

Lake Titicaca, Peru and Bolivia

Didier Marti/Getty Images

Lake Titicaca straddles two South American countries and is the largest freshwater lake on the continent, as well as the world's highest navigable lake. It’s an estimated three million years old, and contains human-made islands constructed of layers of tortora roots and reeds. The number of islands varies at any given time but is usually somewhere between 60 and over 100. This place is extremely important to Peruvian and Bolivian indigenous communities, and offers some of the best views in the Andes.

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia

Chris VR/Travel + Leisure

Originally a prehistoric lake that went dry, Bolivia's salt flats are the largest in the world. Now Uyuni Salt Flat is around 4,200 square miles of striking white salt and rock formations. If you visit between December and April, which is the rainy season, you may see bright pink flamingos. Many people who have visited when water is on the ground describe the experience as walking on a cloud since the sky is reflected in the water. Book a room at Luna Salada Hotel , which is close to the flat and made of salt, for a very special stay.

Pantanal Wetland, Brazil

micsmt/Getty Images

Measuring more than 40 million acres, this is the biggest wetland on earth. Brazil's Pantanal Wetland is also one of the most biodiverse destinations on the planet with more than 4,700 plant and animal species, including jaguars and crocodiles. Balardjischvili recommends “bringing insect repellent, a light raincoat, and a sweatshirt — and always hydrate.”

Petrópolis, Brazil

diegograndi/Getty Images

A royal summer retreat in the 19th century, Petrópolis is a mountain resort city outside of Rio de Janeiro known for its palaces, architecture, and food. “Visit Petrópolis on a guided tour to enjoy the historical aspect," Balardjischvili says. "Always book your tour [with] legalized companies with good reviews."

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

dislentev/Getty Images

Christ the Redeemer is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a must-see for anyone heading to Brazil. The statue of Jesus stands almost 125 feet tall and looks over Rio de Janeiro . When visiting the marvel, you can expect phenomenal views of the city. Balardjischvili recommends booking a ticket in advance to take the train to see the statue.

Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Holger Leue/Getty Images

Sugarloaf Mountain is a major landmark in Brazil, well known for the panoramic city views from the top. When the cable car system opened in 1912, it was the first in Brazil and the third in the world. “For Sugarloaf, visit it in the morning, as it is fresher; sunset is beautiful but extremely crowded," says Balardjischvili. "If you're traveling during the high season, buy a skip-the-line ticket." The mountain peak is almost 1,300 feet high, so you’ll be grateful you don’t have to climb all the way up.

When asked about the best time of year to visit Rio de Janeiro, Balardjischvili says May or June, when "you’ll enjoy beautiful sunny days with no rain and 77 degrees.”

Iguazú Falls, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

DIEGO GUTIERREZ/Getty Images

Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazú Falls is comprised of about 275 individual waterfalls, making it one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. Most of the waterfalls are on the Argentina side, but the tallest is on the Brazil side. It’s a stunning sight to behold and an absolute must for anyone traveling through South America.

Patagonia, Argentina

noblige/Getty Images

Patagonia is larger than many countries around the world and is split between Argentina and Chile. You can expect each city in the region to feel unique; some of the most popular in Argentinian Patagonia are El Calafate, Ushuaia, and El Chaltén. Whether you go to Patagonia Brewery in San Carlos de Bariloche or hike one of the 300 glaciers throughout the region, you're sure to have an unforgettable experience.

Zuccardi Winery, Uco Valley, Argentina

David Silverman/Getty Images

Wine aficionados won't likely want to leave Argentina without sampling a few vintages. Zuccardi Valle de Uco , an award-winning winery, lives up to its reputation, with fantastic wines and the Andes as a stunning backdrop to the property's extensive vineyards. Reservations for tastings and tours can be made online.

Punta del Este Beaches, Uruguay

ElOjoTorpe/Getty Images

Uruguay is still relatively underrated, but it's a fantastic place for international travelers. It takes just a couple of hours by ferry to get from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. From there, it’s about a two-hour drive to Punta del Este, which has some of the best beaches in the country, plus high-end shopping and excellent steakhouses.

Easter Island, Chile

daboost/Getty Images

Easter Island is a Chilean territory in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, about a 5.5-hour flight from Santiago. The remote destination is populated by nearly 1,000 stone statues of human figures, called moai , which are believed to have been created between the 10th and 16th centuries.

Travel Highlights

  • Head to the Peruvian Andes and climb the Inca trail on your way to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu . It’s easily the most famous archaeological site in South America, and while there are some great alternatives, the Inca Trail is iconic.
  • See the blinding white and blue of Salar de Uyuni, the Bolivian salt flats. An almost dreamlike experience, the salt flats stretch for as far as the eye can see, with the sparkling white salt and cerulean blue sky being completely void of any distractions.
  • Stand in the divine presence of Angel Falls, Venezuela. Almost one kilometer high, the waterfall cascades from a tepui - a table top mountain, called Auyantepui - and is approximately 16 times taller than Niagara Falls.
  • Canoe down the legendary Amazon river, the life source of our planet, and appreciate the interconnectivity of Earth and it’s inhabitants.
  • Get lost in the crowds and gawp at the rainbow coloured floats and the passionate Samba Schools of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival and get ready for a party like you’ve never experienced before.
  • Tango with the best in Buenos Aires .

Travel Tips

  • Brush up on your Spanish, as it’s the official language of most of South America, and a little effort goes a long way with the locals.
  • While much of South America is friendly to tourists, extreme poverty means some areas in large cities are off-limits. Keep your wits about, make smart decisions and you’ll only have great experiences.
  • Much like North America, South America is big on affordable bus journeys. The only difference is the variety of passengers you’re likely to meet - from a live chicken to your new best friend.
  • South America straddles the equator and the tropic of Capricorn, meaning most of the continent experiences a tropical climate. However, temperatures vary on the time of year and be aware that the southern part experiences reversed seasons, so plan your wardrobe carefully.
  • Visit your doctor before you travel and make sure you’re up-to-date on all vaccinations and medications needed for travelling in South America.
  • Eat local, it’s the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture and it’s also usually the cheapest way to get a good meal.

Wherever your Colombia tour takes you, music and dance will accompany the journey. Colombia’s varied dance and music heritage blends indigenous, African, Cuban, Caribbean, and European influences, and is an integral part of every region from the high Andes to Caribbean beaches.

Machu Picchu is surely the high-point of a Peru holiday, and with good reason. It is as magnificent as the legends and mysteries that surround it.

A holiday in Uruguay is about indulgences. A glass of fine wine tastes that much better when sampled in the rolling countryside where it was produced.

south america countries map

South America consists of 12 countries, and there’s a range of cultural and natural diversity, making it an exciting place to travel. Here are some reasons to go to South America:

  • South America is inexpensive – With favourable exchange rates – especially if you’re from the USA, Australia, UK or Canada – you don’t need to rob a bank to have a great time exploring South America.
  • South America is fun – Having fun is part of Latin American culture, and the Latinos know how to have a good time eating, drinking and dancing. Add some zing to your visit by planning your trip around a festival or local cultural celebration.

You’ve holidayed as a family at Disneyland, New York or Hawaii, you’re ready for a family adventure and are looking for the safest countries in South America to visit.

According to the Institute for Economics and Peace’s, Global Peace Index, which ranks the safest countries in the world, the safest countries in South America are Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia.

The Institute for Economics and Peace is an independent non-profit organisation that ranks 163 countries using 23 different indicators to determine how safe each nation is.

Patagonia is shared between two countries in South America

Santiago is an excellent place to start your adventure, and although it may not be the most vibrant city, it’s the cleanest and safest city in South America.

Sandwiched between ski slopes and the Pacific Ocean, with wineries in every direction, there are plenty of places to visit around Chile’s capital.

The city has many parks and outdoor areas including Parque Metropolitano, which is easy to reach by funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal.

On the way, visit the Jardin Zoologico for sightings of Chilean animals such as puma, vicuna, deer, condor and tropical birds.

Santiago has an efficient metro system (metrosantiago.cl) and reasonably priced boutique hotels in a trendy suburb like Providencia costs around $120 for a double. T our the historical centre and discover its fascinating history.

Beyond Santiago, Patagonia has spectacular scenery with soaring mountains, forests, lakes and glaciers perfect for trekking and horse riding.

A Patagonia cruise aboard the expedition-style ship Stella Australis is a fantastic way to explore.

Passengers are transferred ashore in zodiacs for twice-daily excursions, and the landscape is a stunning outdoor classroom where the whole family can learn about the region’s flora, fauna and history.

Another region to consider for its adventure appeal is the Atacama Desert in the north, with its lunar landscape, geysers and thermal springs.

Both Patagonia and Atacama are home to some of the most famous Chile landmarks .

best countries to visit in south america for wildlife

When it comes to nature, South America’s second-smallest country is a tough competitor to beat.

The Galapagos Islands is a fantastic place for nature lovers, and if you’re travelling with the family, it’s an excellent choice for a hands-on educational holiday for kids.

They’ll learn about Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle and his discovery of a wildlife wonderland of Galapagos Islands animals such as lizards, iguanas, sea lions and crabs.

The Galapagos Islands has 1300 species found nowhere else on earth, and the easiest way to see the Galapagos is to take a cruise.

A self-guided Galapagos Islands itinerary is another way to explore.

There’s no better way of learning about one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers than being on the spot with a passionate local nature guide.  Find out more here .

Ecuador is named after the equator, the line which divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

There are two equator attractions in Quito – La Mitad del Mundo (middle of the world) and a quirky interactive outdoor museum near Quito called Museo de Sitio Intinan, where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.

The setup is entertaining and guided demonstrations involve audience participation.

You can have fun finding out whether water goes down the plughole the other way in the opposite hemisphere.

There are over 70 volcanoes in Ecuador, including Cotopaxi, which is one of the highest active volcanos in the world. Explore the historic city of Quito on this organised tour .

The Amazon rainforest is a day trip from the colonial city of Quito, which has a treasure trove of UNESCO World Heritage-listed mansions and museums.

3- Argentina

Two countries in south america share Iguazu Falls

Gauchos, futbal and Iguazu Falls are three good reasons to take the family to Argentina.

Buenos Aires is the birthplace of the Argentine Tango and lessons are available in youth hostels, cafes, dance academies and milongas (dance halls).

Stay in a tango-themed hotel and enjoy daily tango lessons, shows, fashion parades and tango-themed rooms.

There are tango events throughout the year, such Tango Festival y Mundial in August.

For more contemporary partying, neo-tango is a fusion of traditional tango and electronic music.

It’s played in nightclubs, but you’ll have to become a night owl to get into the groove.

Nightlife doesn’t get going until midnight, and some dance clubs open at 2 am! Most Argentineans have dinner after 9 pm.

When visiting Argentina, staying in a charming boutique hotel in a hip area in Buenos Aires is possible for under $100.

If you’re visiting Buenos Aires with kids, a few blocks away from Palermo’s trendy shops and bars is the Buenos Aires Zoo where kids can marvel at the Andean condor and aguara guazu (a maned wolf from northern Argentina).

The Museo de los Ninos Abasto is a children’s museum (for kids under 10), with interactive and educational exhibits designed for young travellers to learn about Buenos Aires.

Boca Juniors fans will love the new soccer-themed hotel, Hotel Boca (hotelbocajuniors.com), which has memorabilia and life-sized paintings of players on room doors but if you’re planning on seeing a match, purchase your tickets well in advance.

Horse riding with the gauchos is fun for all the family, and there are several estancias about an hour’s drive from the city.

Beyond the capital, Argentina’s natural attractions range from the glaciers of Patagonia in the south to the deserts of Salta in the north but to get your bearings, this tour will give you the highlights .

The country’s shining star is Iguazu Falls, a gushing goliath among the pantheon of best waterfalls in the world.

Iguazu National Park has plenty of adventure activities, such as jet boating beneath the falls and zip-lining in the forest.

Machu Picchu is one of the best places to visit in south america

Boat tours on Lake Titicaca , jungle adventures in the Amazon basin, climbing Machu Picchu and learning about Peru’s Inca civilisation are some of the attractions in Peru.

Peru’s Inca history is a drawcard, and Machu Picchu is one of the top places in South America to cross off your list.

Climbing the Inca ruins (Pisac or Ollantaytambo) is fun and educational. The train to Machu Picchu is an adventure, but exploring Machu Picchu can be tiring, so stay overnight in Aqua Calientes.

When travelling to Machu Picchu, it’s a good idea to acclimatise at a lower altitude in the Sacred Valley (rather than Cuzco).

The Incas are relatively new to Peruvian civilisation.

There are many more fascinating archaeological attractions to visit such as the Nazca Lines, etched into the desert floor, Chimu kingdom’s Chan Chan, Caral and Chavin de Huantar.

With over 3,000 festivals in Peru, there’s no shortage of festivities, including obscure ones like the Marinera Festival (held at the end of January) in Trujillo, where people celebrate with flirtatious dancing for couples involving a handkerchief.

March is Peru’s carnival time when colourful displays of dancing, elaborate costumes and masks are displayed.

The local custom is to throw buckets of water and powder at anyone around, so wear old clothes.

South America’s second-largest and the biggest festival in Peru is Inti Raymi – Festival of the Sun (24 June) in Cuzco.

It’s the best Inca festival to plan your trip to experience Inca rituals and plenty of partying around town.

More than 200,000 visitors flock to attend rituals, parties and celebrations in honour of the God of the Sun: Wiracocha.

Vehicles reflected in Bolivia's salt flats

Not only is Bolivia home to the highest capital in the world (La Paz), Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest lake and Salar de Uyuni is the highest salt flats.

South America’s poorest country is rich in culture, which is displayed with pride by the locals at festivals and markets.

If you’re on a budget, pick Bolivia, as it’s one of the cheapest countries in South America to visit.

The mining town of Oruro is the venue of the Oruro Carnival, when thousands of Bolivian folk dancers in colourful traditional costumes and masks dance up a storm.

People party in the plazas and gather on rooftops to watch La Diablada (dance of the devils), a massive parade with up to 30,000 dancers and musicians dressed up as Inca gods, devils and spirit animals. Find out more here .

Rio de Janeiro and sugarloaf mountain in Brazil

Brazil is a natural playground with 7000km of beaches and 44 national parks.

With a mountainous backdrop and natural harbour, Rio de Janeiro is a magnet for travellers.

Visiting Rio during Carnaval time is one of the things to do in Brazil for your bucket list as the city is one big party.

Rio puts on parties, parades and formal events, but there are plenty of free street and beach celebrations at Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.

The Samba Parade is a spectacular thing to see in Rio as the elaborate floats are truly impressive.

Hundreds of people samba down the street in glitzy costumes and hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants are all open for partying.

In Rio de Janeiro, families should head for Leblon Beach, an upmarket area with organised beach sports for adults and children.

There’s a free play zone with toys for toddlers, and there’s the opportunity of joining local school kids in a game of beach soccer.

On weekends, the beaches are filled with entertainers, jugglers, magicians and musicians.

At Museu do Indio, a museum for Brazil’s indigenous cultures, kids can get creative with body stamps and paints for kids and play in models of native Indian houses.

In the Catete neighbourhood, Parque do Catete has a toy library where you can hire toys by the hour.

Carnival (February) is the most expensive time to visit Rio as room rates can quadruple.

Still, you can save money by eating at no-frills “per kilo” restaurants, where you pay for your meal according to the weight of the plate (usually between $8 and $30 a kilogram).

Here are the highlights of Rio .

Sao Paulo is Brazil’s largest city and its cultural capital. It has an array of museums, cafes and bars.

There are plenty of attractions for the little ones, including a Wet n Wild water slide park, a science museum, a zoo and a snake study centre.

The Pantanal, the Amazon basin and Iguacu Falls are adventure destinations with plenty to offer.

Safaris in the Pantanal, one of the world’s most extensive tropical wetlands, usually include visits to local schools and farms, wildlife quizzes and campfires.

Here are the highlights of Sao Paulo

best countries to visit in south america colombia

Colonial architecture, the Caribbean coastline and the coffee triangle are some things to see in this country in South America.

During the 1980s, Colombia’s third-largest city, Santiago de Cali, was the capital of drug barons.

The drug cartels have been cleaned up, and Colombia is fast becoming a safe country in South America.

The Zumba craze that took the world by storm came from Colombia and has similarities to Colombian salsa.

Colombians salsa all year round in restaurants and public squares, but a fun time to visit is during the Salsa Festival in Medellin (July) and the Cali Salsa Festival (December).

CDC warns travelers to South America, Caribbean of risks from fever-causing virus

Tourists walk along the paths of the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru in September 2023. Peru and several other South American countries, along with areas of the Caribbean, are seeing more of the Oropouche virus, the CDC warns.

Tourists walk along the paths of the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru in September 2023. Peru and several other South American countries, along with areas of the Caribbean, are seeing more of the Oropouche virus, the CDC warns. (Colleen Thomas/TNS)

(Tribune News Service) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert on Friday warning of the increased risk of the Oropouche virus to travelers in the Americas, particularly those visiting the Amazon basin and areas in South America and the Caribbean where the disease has newly been spotted.

Endemic in the Amazon, Oropouche is a virus spread by the bite of small flies and mosquitoes that can cause fevers, headaches and other ailments.

The disease has recently been identified in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Cuba, including in areas that have never before seen it. Between January and August, more than 8,000 cases have been reported, according to the CDC, including two deaths. There were also five cases where the virus was transmitted from mother to fetus where fetal death or congenital abnormalities were reported.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization and its regional office, the Pan American Health Organization, urged countries throughout the Americas to ramp up surveillance of the overlooked and underdiagnosed disease. That’s a difficult task, as Oropouche is often confused with another virus that’s having a record-breaking year in the Americas: dengue.

Oropouche and dengue both cause high fever, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and headaches, and the best way to distinguish between the two is through diagnostic tools. Oropouche causes symptoms in about 6 in 10 people it infects, and there are no specific vaccines or treatments for the disease.

It’s still not well understood what puts some people at risk of more severe health complications, the CDC said. Health authorities around the world are currently investigating the risk it poses to pregnant people.

This year, U.S. and European travelers returning from Cuba and Brazil have contracted Oropouche. Now, the U.S. public health agency is advising that travelers who have symptoms consistent with the disease be evaluated and get tested for the virus.

The CDC warned that measures are needed to prevent potential importation of the virus to the U.S., where there’s no current evidence of local transmission.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'quasi-royal tour' of Colombia puts King Charles in a tricky spot

Topic: Royalty

The Duchess and Duke of Sussex have just wrapped up a four-day tour to Colombia. ( Supplied: Le Studio Photography )

It's easy to be cynical about Harry and Meghan's four-day trip to Columbia.

It had the look and feel of a royal tour with one important difference: the couple doesn't work for the royal family.

When Buckingham Palace first announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would "no longer be working members of the royal family", it was the late Queen Elizabeth II who underlined that her grandson and his wife would "not continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service".

It was a statement that irked the couple. "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal," they chided. In the three years since that war of words, Harry and Meghan have moved to California and set up their own not-for-profit outfit, The Archewell Foundation, with a mission statement of "Show Up, Do Good". The latest iteration of that mantra seems to involve overseas tours.

The first was the well-received visit to Nigeria in May earlier this year. Meghan recently revealed her Nigerian heritage, and the tour was firmly linked to Harry's Invictus Games, Nigeria being one of the countries sending athletes to the sporting competition for wounded members of the armed forces.

The motivations to visit Colombia are a little woollier.

Why the tour puts the King in a tricky spot

Foreign tours are cornerstones of royal work, an important set piece of soft diplomacy carried out on behalf of the British government and people.

The King, then Prince of Wales, and Camilla visited Colombia in 2014; Princess Anne toured in 1997; and last November Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, was there on the latest official royal visit, made at the request of the British Foreign Office to support the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Sophie Edinburgh's tour was focused and low key, highlighting her work with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and the rights of women and girls.

In a photo reminiscent of past royal tours, Meghan and Harry descend the steps of a plane, holding hands and smiling.

The problem with Harry picking up the tour torch is that as a prince who also happily uses his Duke of Sussex title (and the Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex title), he could be seen as representing the monarchy and therefore Britain with the possibility of diplomatic incidents a concern.

But since Harry doesn't work for the "Firm" anymore, he can't be advised or controlled by the UK government, which puts the King in a tricky spot: How can he stop his son and daughter-in-law from wandering the globe at will on what many see as quasi-royal jamborees? And how can he communicate those worries to the Sussexes when the family rift appears so cavernous?

That Harry and Meghan are free agents — in that they no longer answer to Harry's father, his brother or the "men in grey suits" that the prince has suggested run the monarchy — has never been more obvious. The fact that Harry chose to make this visit in the royal holiday period when the family mostly retreats from the public eye could be seen as a sensitive move to prevent clashes with official royal engagements, or as grandstanding in the void. It really depends on how you view the couple and their work. And this is Harry's problem: he's damned either way.

He would argue these are not royal tours, but part of his and Meghan's humanitarian work. And while there are many on social media who think all he does is think up ways in which he can get back at his family, the fact is Harry and Meghan were personally invited on this tour by Francia Marquez, the vice president of Colombia — who also hosted the Duchess of Edinburgh when she visited in November. So this VP does know the difference between the working royal family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who hail from Montecito.

Meghan smiles and embraces Colombia's vice president.

Marquez, 42, is the country's first Afro-Colombian vice president, a human rights and environmental activist and lawyer, and the nation's first minister for equality. She is also a bit of a fan of the Duchess of Sussex and first invited her to Colombia a year ago to take part in an event to mark International Afro-descendant women's Day.

Meghan couldn't make it but wrote back saying she was eager to "get to know our country" said Marquez at a press conference ahead of the couple's arrival. "Since then we have been working for a year to achieve this visit, which is so important and good."

Although they're not as well-known in Colombia as they are in the US — indeed some of the passers-by interviewed by journalists didn't have a clue who they were — Marquez was certain that a visit by the power couple would "illuminate Colombia's role as a beacon of culture and innovation".

Marquez said she had been especially inspired to reach out because of Harry and Meghan's TV six-part TV documentary. "I saw the Netflix series about their life, their story and that moved me and motivated me to say that this is a woman who deserves to come to our country and tell her story and her exchange will undoubtedly be an empowerment to so many women in the world," she told reporters.

Royal media not invited to Colombian tour

The tour started in the capital Bogota and took in the Caribbean and Pacific regions of Cartagena and Cali. It certainly had the framework of a royal visit with a series of engagements with carefully crafted photo opportunities.

One important change in "protocol" for Harry was that royal rota media were not invited. This is the press corps, some of whom work for the British newspapers, he is currently locked in legal battles with, so it's hardly surprising he didn't want them along.

Instead there was just one official reporter, a digital journalist from US Harpers Bazaar, who provided press release style articles from each day which were shared by Harry and Meghan's team, with the content no doubt pre-approved.

For Harry and Meghan, a key focus was to highlight a new initiative they are working on surrounding online environments for children — cyberbullying, online exploitation and their mental health impacts.

The vice president spoke about her own experiences with digital harassment and said that she hoped society could strike a better balance when it comes to the media climate and online platforms that affect mental health — a topic close to Prince Harry's heart.

In San Basilio de Palenque, which was established as the first free African town in the Americas in 1619, Meghan and Harry greeted community leaders in Spanish and Palanquero, the local Indigenous language. Meghan said she was "so honoured" to be there while Harry described the visit as an "incredibly moving experience". Later Meghan spoke again in Spanish at a forum to rapturous applause.

The tour included some lovely salsa dance moves from Harry and Meghan who seemed to be having a ball, lessons in local drumming, panel discussions on fostering safer online communities for children, a game of volleyball with Colombia's Invictus Games team and plenty of opportunities for the couple to meet local people, especially children and young people.

The vice president seemed delighted with her royal visitors. "I wanted them to come here and discover the essence of who we are — our spirituality, our music, our culture and our ancestral heritage that is still very much alive today," she said.

Meghan and Harry smile as they talk to a crowd of teenaged students during an event.

It's not clear who funded the trip — whether the Sussexes paid their own way or the Colombian government picked up the tab — but if the aim was to raise awareness for Colombia that was certainly achieved with photos hitting media around the world.

Critics carped that it was hypocritical of Harry to happily take his wife to Colombia when he claims it's too dangerous for her to visit the UK, but it's worth noting that security around the couple was reportedly extremely tight and certainly more numerous than he would receive as a VIP in the UK.

It's highly likely there will be more Sussex tours on the horizon with Commonwealth countries surely on the list, which is likely to create more headaches back in the UK. Some commentators have suggested the only solution is for Harry and Meghan to be stripped of their titles to avoid being seen as royal emissaries.

Such a move would only deepen the family rift and when seen in context of what looked like a happy visit, is the House of Montecito really such a threat?

The second series of Celebrity Race Across The World sprinted into action on BBC One on 14 August – and this time contestants are navigating the Amazon and the Andes in South America .

Four new famous faces will compete to make their way across countries without the aid of transport, smartphones and bank cards.

TV personality Jeff Brazier and his son Freddy, actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary, former glamour model Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy, and Radio 2 host Scott Mills and his husband Sam will have to rely on their wits to make it to the other side of the continent.

The 12,500km race begins in Belem, northern Brazil , before passing through five checkpoints across the length of South America to the finish line in the Andes, Frutillar in southern Chile .

Tim Harcourt, chief creative officer of Studio Lambert said: “After the phenomenally successful run of the first celebrity series, and more recently the fourth series of the regular series - we can’t wait to bring audiences along with us to the huge South American continent and its jaw-dropping scenery, in a race which will push our celebrities and their loved ones to their absolute limits.”

Belem, Northern Brazil

Belem is the capital of the Brazilian state of Para

Otherwise known as “the gateway to the Amazon”, Belem in north Brazil is a riverfront city of churches, colourful azulejo tiled houses and remnants of Portuguese colonial architecture from its time as the first European colony on the river. From here, the Amazon rainforest stretches across much of northwestern Brazil into Bolivia, Peru , Ecuador, Colombia , Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname.

Canoa Quebrada is known as “the pearl of the east coast”

For the first leg of the journey, the pairs made their way to Canoa Quebrada – an east-coast beach resort in Brazil. Beyond the white swathes of sand, horse riding, sailing in a traditional jangada boat and windsurfing attract tourists to this area of the Aracati municipality.

Frutillar, Southern Chile

Frutillar is part of the Unesco Creative Cities Network

On Llanquihue Lake in southern Chile’s Lake District, Frutillar is a “city of music” in the Unesco Creative Cities Network, with views of the volcano Osorno. Among attractions, blended Chilean and German cultural traditions in The German Museum, the Teatro del Lago acoustic concert hall and a yacht club for sailing on the lake.

Ten Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tour bombshells - 'William statement, blunt order and regret'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have kicked off their eagerly anticipated four-day tour of Colombia - and the first day has already been drama filled with a packed schedule

  • Updated 12:20, 16 Aug 2024

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's controversial four-day tour of Colombia has finally kicked off - and the first day has been filled with drama.

The couple arrived in the country today where they were greeted by the vice-president Francia Marquez before dropping by on a school, enjoying a musical performance at an arts centre in Bogota before finally attending an internet safety summit. The Sussexes are being given a full security detail throughout their visit alongside Ms Marquez, who invited the couple to travel to Colombia for what has been dubbed a DIY royal tour.

The quasi-royal tour, which has many similarities to the programme of an official royal overseas visit, is the Sussexes' second this year, after their three-day visit to Nigeria at the invitation of the West African nation’s chief of defence staff. And it seems there was several bombshell revelations emerging on the first day of this South America trip...

Controversial Netflix show inspired visit

Before Harry and Meghan arrived for their first engagement in Colombia on Thursday, Vice President Marquez gave a press conference, where she explained she was moved to invite Harry and Meghan to the country after watching their Netflix docu-series, where they railed against their treatment when they were in the Royal Family .

"I saw the Netflix series about their life, their story and it moved me and motivated me to say this is a woman who deserves to come to our country and tell her story and her exchange will undoubtedly be an empowerment to so many women in the world ," Ms Marquez said.

The Sussexes’ controversial six-part Netflix show, aired just three months after Queen Elizabeth II's death, laid bare their troubled relationship with the royal family and the struggles which led to their decision to step back from the working monarchy. Ms Marquez described the Sussexes’ trip as a “very special visit” aimed at building bridges and joining forces against cyber-bullying and online digital violence and discrimination, as well as promoting women’s leadership in Colombia.

Little-known Princess Diana fact

Meanwhile, also during the press conference, it emerged Harry's late mother, Princess Diana had planned to visit Colombia shortly before she died in 1997.

Harry often references his mother during his public appearances and the vice president said: "I think Prince Harry being here today after the dream of his mum’s of visiting this country is an opportunity to show the best of our nation, to show who Colombians are. We are people who in the midst of adversities do everything possible to give the best of ourselves."

Harry 'regret' amid security arrangements

Harry and Meghan's trip to Colombia comes amid tight security - as well as Harry's legal battle in the UK over his right to police protection when he visits his homeland.

This meant security was tight today outside children's school, the Colegio Cultura Popular, in Bogota, where they received a tour and informational session by the institution's head, Leonel Umaña Parra, and by José David, a student at the school. Heavily-armed soldiers could be seen lining the perimeter, while armed police, officers on motorbikes and suited security guards were also present.

And amid pictures of the couple arriving to meet their hosts in Colombia, body language expert Judi says his expression is one of hesitance, hinting at complicated feelings surrounding the trip.

"Harry walks ahead in less of a performative mode," she explained. "He forms a polite smile but his expression is a little more tempered and complex. His eye expression looks almost wary which could be natural given he is a royal without the kind of protocols and even safety nets the Firm will have when they are on proper royal tours."

Meghan's glamorous tour wardrobe

During the first day of the tour, Meghan showcased several very different looks showcasing the first outfits from her tour wardrobe. As she touched down in the South American capital Bogota today, the Duchess of Sussex looked chic in what is described as a navy 'summer suit ' by one of her favourite designers Veronica Beard.

The ensemble, which suggested Meghan looked ready for business, consists of a sleeveless jacket nipped in at the waist and cigarette-style trousers skimming the ankle. Both garments are available in navy as well as red, with the top, costing £596, described on the Veronica Beard website as a "'fashion-forward take on the vest".

It has a "collared halter silhouette while tortoiseshell buttons down the centre and on the pockets offer decorative touches." The matching trousers come in at £350. Meghan finished off her outfit with a £3,650 white Loro Piana handbag and also appeared to be wearing her £15,000 Lorraine Schwartz "Against Evil Eye" bracelet.

Later, she sported a more playful look as she and Harry watched a dance performance by wearing a pink patterned dress by Colombian designer Johanne Ortiz and styling her loosely curled hair so it lay over her toned shoulders.

Infamous necklace on display

It wasn't just Meghan's fashion choices getting noticed- Harry's were too as he proudly showed off a necklace which allegedly fell victim to his feud with brother Prince William . Fans were quick to spot the prince had chosen to wear the necklace he claimed his brother broke during a heated argument.

The Duke of Sussex alleged in his book Spare in 2019, the now Prince of Wales wrestled him to the floor and broke his necklace in a "physical fight". In the book, Harry recalled calling his therapist after the argument and revealed his brother had "knocked me to the floor" – while his shirt was "ripped" and necklace was "broken" following the row which felt "different" to their previous arguments.

In January 2023, he appeared on The Late Show in the US and was quizzed by host Stephen Colbert about the necklace. Host Stephen, 58, asked: "There is a lot of talk about the physical fight the two of you had, where he pushed you down in the kitchen and broke the dog bowl, when you fell on it. It says it broke your necklace. What necklace was it he broke?"

Harry then replied with: "This one. Which is now fixed." Harry then lifted the necklace, which had three pendants on, to show the audience.

'Barrier gesture'

In their first engagement of the day, Harry and Meghan spent around half an hour at the vice president's residence, where they exchanged welcome gifts and were offered tea, coffee and traditional pandebono – Colombian cheese bread.

And as they lined up for a group shot, body language expert Judi James noted Harry's stance and it's similarity to his brother William's trademark pose - something Harry largely hasn't been seen to emulate before.

Judi said: "Harry's pose here looks almost like a nod to his brother William as he adopts his signature 'fig leaf' pose with the hands clasped in front of the lower torso.

"It's a status-lowering pose which can suggest some shyness but it's not normally in Harry's repertoire. He seems to want to avoid pulling royal rank in these initial poses, hence the barrier gesture while Meghan signals greater confident with her arms straight down at her sides."

Harry's true feelings

After the visit to the school, the Sussexes later smiled and tapped their toes to the music as they watched a music and dance group outside Delia Zapata National Centre for the Arts. Harry and Meghan were then seen chatting as they applauded their performers along with the rest of the assembled guests there before they posed for pictures with them.

And it was during the show body language expert Judi James believes Harry revealed the true depths if his discomfort.

She told The Mirror : "Despite his life-long induction into royal behaviour it was Meghan who managed to sustain a perfect royal smile at this performance while Harry's expressions and body language fluctuated. At times he was actively laughing and chatting using animated gesticulation but there were also 'flash' moments like this when his smile dropped and his facial expression looked almost dour in comparison to his wife's.

"When he sat watching there was a lot of pulling and fiddling with his clothes and some foot-shuffling to suggest awkwardness or anxiety while Meghan beside him adopted an elegant pose that didn't waver."

Meghan's command

After their first engagement, Harry and Meghan headed to a school and they were captured on camera holding hands as they left the vice president's office - and from this footage, a lip reader has uncovered an exchange between the couple, in which Meghan had a direct order for her husband.

According to professional lip reader Nicola Hickling , Meghan quietly muttered an order to Harry, saying simply, "hand", before he replied, "Here you go."

The pair later visited children's school, the Colegio Cultura Popular, in Bogota, where they were given a tour and informational session by the institution's head, Leonel Umaña Parra, and by José David, a student at the school.

And while there, Harry entertained the crowds while trying to count in Spanish while also sharing details about his children, Archie, five, and Lilibet, three. "I have young children and they’re not on social media," he told the crowd, according to Ms Hickling.

Fuming William

The couple’s visit to Colombia is said to have caused problems at home in the UK, where his brother has been left fuming over the unofficial royal visit, according to an expert.

Royal pundit Tom Quinn suggested Prince William has been irked by pair’s arrival and is keen to publicly refute the trip's legitimacy - but the King is not interested in getting involved.

Quinn said: “The practical issue for King Charles and Prince William is how they should react if there was no risk it would make things worse, William would like to issue a statement reminding everyone Meghan and Harry's tour of Colombia is not in any way officially sanctioned. His father King Charles is steadfast in his belief silence is the best response.”

Harry's Elon Musk swipe

Prince Harry seemingly took a dig at Elon Musk as he criticised people in charge of social media platforms . The royal was speaking at the Responsible Digital Future forum in Bogota where he suggested people in charge should take more responsibility.

He said: “What happens online within a matter of minutes transfers to the streets. People are acting on information that isn’t true. It comes down to all of us to be able to spot the true from the fake.

"In an ideal world those with positions of influence would take more responsibility. We are no longer debating facts.”
