- INTELLIGENT TRAVEL
So You Want to Be a Tour Guide
Here's how to travel for a living.
When people say “I wish I could travel for a living!” I start talking about the sheer number of opportunities out there.
Before settling into travel blogging and journalism (I’m actually using my college major!), I spent some time as an international tour director and guide, learning firsthand what goes into leading groups of people through some of the world’s most famous sights. It can be a dream job if you know what you’re getting into. I felt like I earned my master’s degree in European history from everything I learned, and often served as a makeshift therapist for travelers. We’d even come up with nicknames, like “QNE” for Questions Never End.
The truth is there’s no one way to go about landing your dream job. But it does help to pick as many brains as possible.
I sat down and chatted with Carrie Fitchett , a sought-after tour director working with Educational Travel Adventures , about what to know if you’re thinking about pursuing her line of work. “When I researched jobs that said ‘TRAVEL FOR A LIVING!,’ they were all things where people go, stay in the hotel, drink bad coffee all day, and wear heels,” she said. “I didn’t want to do that or sit in an office with a headset and sell places I’ve never been to. That’s why this job made sense,” she said.
Know the Lingo: Tour Director vs. Tour Guide A tour director is the one responsible for logistics, confirmations, planning, damage control, and group dynamics. They also give commentary on history and culture. A tour guide gives specific narration in a place, often joining the tour group for just a couple of hours. If you want to dip into this world, local guiding is great, and perfect if you want to go home each night. There is also long-term contract work available on cruises, from big ships to smaller river cruises.
Know the Pros If you’re in a rut at your current job, here’s a chance to do something different each and every day. This is a job that can take you all over the world to events like the Olympics and the World Cup . “It’s the ridiculous things I get to do every single day — whether it’s museums, shows, or eating dinner in the Eiffel Tower — but it’s also the dynamic of people,” Fitchett said. “When someone waits their whole life to go to Paris, I get to take them. It’s the look on their face as they experience it for the first time, and I’m a part of that memory.”
Know the Cons Most tour directors are freelance, which brings its own set of challenges, like needing independent health insurance and struggling to cobble together enough work — especially at the beginning. You’ll also be getting very little sleep when you’re confirming the next day’s activities and studying commentary. “True colors come out on tour,” Fitchett said. “Sometimes people are ungrateful or bossy or think they know more about a place than you…But even if I think it’s the silliest question I’ve ever heard in my life, I have to answer it so they feel good about it.” Scheduling may keep you away from home for weeks or month at a time, so you might have to skip important events, like weddings or funerals.
Consider Training The International Tour Management Institute (ITMI) is a well-known guide program, offering two-week trainings in San Francisco and an annual symposium to connect tour companies with guides. The high price tag (around $3,500 for tuition) doesn’t include housing or meals, but the pay off can be well worth it. “The money will come back to you in your first couple of tours,” Fitchett said. “Plus, I made amazing friends and priceless contacts.” There is also the International Guide Academy in Colorado, as well as many online options.
Adults vs. Students Most tour directors choose to work a mix of adult and student tours. Student tours provide a way to make money in the spring in places like Boston, New York, and D.C., when adult tours run less frequently. Adult tours, usually clustered in summer and fall, can take you all over the world. But there’s a difference: “With kids, you affect and change lives. Maybe they’ve never traveled and you show them what’s out there,” Fitchett said. On the other hand, with adults, “the whole trip is more chill, but in the downtime you might be freaking out over what question they’ll ask next.”
- Nat Geo Expeditions
Going Off Road You may burn out or get tired of always being on the road. That doesn’t mean your career in the tour business is over. There are behind-the-scenes roles to be played at tour companies — like developing product, which involves choosing the right hotel, transportation, and activity partners, as well as sales, event planning, and social media.
Bottom Line: Is It Right for You? “For this job, you have to love every part of travel, and know you will be living out of a suitcase and never sleeping,” Fitchett said. “But I absolutely love what I do, and I don’t need the stability right now.” But, like anything, timing is everything. “In the meantime, love the job you have!” she said. “Try a class, start locally, and talk to as many people as possible who have done it or are doing it.”

The job market for tour guides in the United States
There are currently an estimated 45,800 tour guides in the United States. The tour guide job market is expected to grow by 10.5% between 2016 and 2026.
How employable are tour guides?
CareerExplorer rates tour guides with a D employability rating, meaning this career should provide weak employment opportunities for the foreseeable future. Over the next 10 years, it is expected the US will need 13,200 tour guides. That number is based on 4,800 additional tour guides, and the retirement of 8,400 existing tour guides.
Are tour guides in demand?
When most people hear the term ‘tour guide’ they commonly think of guides who show travellers around places of interest, either in one city or country or at multiple destinations as part of an extended tour. The fact is, however, the field employs different kinds of guides and the demand for and employability of those employed in each sector varies according to several factors. Certainly, job prospects for local tour guides who escort visitors to museums, galleries, and religious sites rely on an influx of tourists. These tour guides must be able to recall facts, figures, and events and be able to convey them in a compelling manner. Those guides who accompany groups on multi-city or multi-country itineraries are responsible for almost every tour detail and must possess exemplary organization skills and the ability to engage different cultures. In most European countries, local guides must pass rigorous examinations and must be licensed to practice. In North America, there are few regulations for tour guides and they are generally not required to obtain a license. Regardless of where these tour guides work, familiarity with local history and attractions, communication skills, comfort with public speaking, and knowledge of more than one language are definite assets for progressing in the field. A background in theatre or entertainment or experience in teaching will also improve a candidate’s employment prospects. ’Tour guides’ who work with corporations suffer from a misnomer. They are not tour guides. They are ‘trip directors’ or ‘travel directors’ or ‘tour directors’ and their responsibilities vary greatly from those of traditional tour guides. TDs, as they are referred to in industry circles, act more as traveling concierges who cater to the needs of participants on corporate reward or ‘incentive’ trips. Aspiring TDs need to be prepared for extremely long days, multiple changes to pre-planned programs, and often unexpected requests and demands from their guests who have in most cases won their trips for achieving sales or management quotas. Since TDs sometimes travel to and from destinations with their groups, they are more employable if they have at least a basic understanding of airline reservations and ticketing procedures, as well as language skills. A high energy level, ability to think on one’s feet, and a genuine desire to resolve issues are unofficially mandatory to be successful in this role.

Is this you?
The tour guide, as the face of Haunt, brings theatrical entertainment and genuine compassion for guests.
A natural performer and engrossing storyteller, they can captivate large groups, even on bustling city streets at night.
With a love for all things ghostly, they’re familiar with ghost TV shows, podcasts, movies, and hunting gear.
Open to feedback, they recognize coaching as key to growth, ensuring that experiences constantly meet our high standards.
Their genuine empathy and commitment to care will make guests feel taken care of, fostering an exciting and unique experience.
After you apply (see application above), we’ll see if it feels like a fit.
If so…
- Zoom screening interview: We’ll ask questions about your interest, availability, and improv skills.
- Record a 8 minute speech from our tour (we’ll provide the script)
- Join a tour: See the tour in action as an observer, then as an audition.
- Learn the tour stories (pays $500: half mid-training, half upon completion).
- Ideally you’re up and leading your own tours within 3 weeks!
More than any other ghost tour we know of!
Pay starts at $90 per shift (1.5 hour tour + showing up 10 minutes early + filling out recap afterward).
Tips/gratuities are customary, and will be a significant part of your income.
This tour takes place in big cities after dark.
There are occasionally interruptions or encounters with street folks, hecklers and drunks who may attempt to derail the tour.
This is the main challenge, and we are looking for tour guides who are confident to handle these encounters and keep your tour group feeling safe.
Nope, our tours are in English only for now (but we might be interested if you feel confident to lead in another language!)
We are artists and like to arrange a schedule that fits your lifestyle!
The majority of our shifts are “up for grabs” — once bookings come in, we’ll post them in our Discord channel, and they are first come, first serve for guides to claim.
For nights we know will book (Fri/Sat nights), we will schedule guides 1-2 months in advance.
Once you’ve confirmed/accepted shifts, it is your responsibility to get these covered if needed. Ideally, we have more guides than tours, so that you’ll be able to get your tour covered by a fellow guide.
We are currently seeking guides who can work 1-2 shifts a week, which may increase during peak season.
We lead tours year-round, rain or shine. These are popular even during “low season” on weekends, and are particularly busy June through October, and during holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc).
We ask that you schedule extended vacations outside of these times.
- Vacation Pay: You will accrue 8% of hours paid to be used as Paid Time Off
- Professional Development: $40/month reimbursement for ghost/paranormal/true crime research
Ideally you would have flexible daytime availability (there are occasional private daytime tour requests).
The vast majority of shifts (including private tours) will start at 5pm or later.
The latest tours we run are generally 8pm (ends around 9:45pm).

Moscow Metro
Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).
Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.
Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line
Subway station "revolution square".
Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.
Subway station Arbatskaya
Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.
The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.
The depth of the station is 41 meters.
Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.
Subway station Kievskaya
There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.
Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).
The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.
= Ring Line Subway =
It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.
The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.
On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.
At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.
Subway station Belorusskaya
The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.
The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.
Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.
Subway station Novoslobodskaya
Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street: the station is located at the very beginning of it.
Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.
Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.
Subway station Komsomolskaya
The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.
This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.
The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.
Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.
The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.
In conclusion...
Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Icon status has been achieved. This is what happens next. By Stellene Volandes
Charles Lewis Tiffany was a pioneer of the imagination from the start. He began offering clients rare Japanese imports back in 1837, when that was all but unheard of—Commodore Perry didn’t “open” Japan until 1853. It’s a moment in the Tiffany timeline that comes full circle this spring, as the house opens the “Tiffany Wonder” exhibit in Tokyo (through June 23 at the Tokyo Node Gallery). Charles’s son Louis Comfort continued the family tradition of daring. Note the wildness of the inspiration in those Tiffany lamps, the exquisite strangeness of his Medusa pendant (on view in Tokyo).
So, when Tiffany chairman Walter Hoving decided in 1956 to bring a Frenchman named Jean Schlumberger—who began his career making clips out of Meissen porcelain flowers he scavenged from Paris flea markets and crafting wild buttons for Elsa Schiaparelli—into the Tiffany fold, he was continuing a long-standing tradition.
Those Bird on a Rock lapel pins you’ve seen on everyone from Odell Beckham Jr. to Jeremy Allen White are iconic Schlumberger. (It was said he was inspired by a cockatoo he spotted outside his home in Guadeloupe.) He created the first one for his great friend and patron Bunny Mellon in 1965. It was a canary and white diamond bird with an emerald eye atop a cabochon lapis rock. (It will also be on view in Tokyo, on loan from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, to which Mellon donated her extensive Schlumberger collection. She also purchased seven other Bird on a Rock brooches, likely as gifts for friends and family.)
How does a house make sure a piece with such a foothold in jewelry history—and with such a strong presence in the current market—continues to evolve? How does it stoke the collector’s desire? It sets the bird free.

The most memorable high jewelry collections took us places. Van Cleef & Arpels whisked us off on the Grand Tour , while Dior led us into its couture ateliers via diamonds cut to resemble delicate fronds of lace. Cartier took us back to the Art Deco era, while Louis Vuitton offered up an entire history of our planet in rubellites and spessartite garnets. How can rocks do all that, you ask? It’s called ambition.

Turns out the secrets to longevity in the jewelry world aren’t so different from those IRL. You need grit, a strong appetite for innovation, and a healthy social circle. Good jewelry is also one of those things that get better with age. With smart investments , you will too.
In 1924, while everyone else was using platinum, Louis Cartier combined three colors of gold to form the Trinity . A century later another radical idea: The OG now comes in a square shape.
Miuccia Prada, A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, and Madonna get their antique jewels from Pennisi, the family-owned shop in Milan, which celebrated its 50th with a book—Mrs. Prada wrote the preface.
Ilias Lalaounis was a champion of preserving ancient techniques, and in 1994 he opened Greece’s first jewelry museum. A retrospective, on view through October , honors his legacy.
With her exuberant Instagram account, Giovanna Engelbert schools social media on the difference between Bulgari, Marina B, and beyond. By Melanie Grant
It all began with a rigatoni necklace. As a child Giovanna Engelbert layered pasta to make her own spiraling neckwear. It was her introduction to the idea that jewelry could be accessible as well as beautiful, that materials should be in service to design. Later she used her first official wages to purchase a “trippy” gold and crystal Yves Saint Laurent necklace, and her jewelry collection grew from there. “I remember the story of every jewel and every piece I have in my life,” she says. “I find the jewels are alive, and they are in conversation with each other.”
Today Engelbert, the global creative director at Swarovski , is a jewelry evangelist to her nearly 2 million followers on Instagram, where her Yves Saint Laurent hobnobs with her Schiaparelli and her Balenciaga hangs with a piece of costume jewelry from Fellini’s Casanova. She places Karl Lagerfeld within stalking distance of enamel pieces she has collected from the 19th century and imagines the intriguing gossip sessions between their makers.

Fifth Avenue at 57th Street, jewelry crossroads of the world, welcomed a new neighbor: Chanel’s first U.S. flagship for its watches and fine jewelry. The store, designed by Peter Marino, is now home to more haute joaillerie than any other Chanel boutique in America—and it’s the only place to see not-for-sale historical pieces that will be exhibited here exclusively four times a year.
We won’t dispute that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but when she’s feeling adventurous, bring on the turquoise. The sacred stone, long prized in Native American cultures and treasured by royals, has been making frequent appearances , on the red carpet (see: Lily Gladstone in a turquoise-flecked Bulgari necklace at the Oscars) and in high jewelry (Cartier gave it a starring role in a necklace strung with carved coral ), cementing the exceedingly rare stone’s timeless appeal. Yes, even in the winter months.

It’s thanks to visionaries with an open mind and an excellent eye that stones like kunzite, tanzanite, and morganite are now in the jewelry lexicon. Today a new generation is picking up the torch—and making us look twice.
Yellow gold or white? You no longer have to pick sides, thanks to Adam Neeley, who invented a new ombré alloy called SpectraGold.
Greek gem explorer Yianni Melas discovered this stone in Africa and called it aquaprase because it reminded him of the Aegean Sea.
You might assume 24 carats of diamonds and moonstones would weigh you down. Lugano figured it out: set them in blue titanium, and they’ll feel light as air.
Simplicity telegraphs confidence, which is why no portrait of a lady today is complete without a demure classic like the button earring. By Lynn Yaeger
Look down—your jewelry is all wrong! That neck-mess flopping on your chest, clanking with horseshoes and horoscope charms? Too noisy. The armload of bracelets you’re brandishing, Nancy Cunard–style? Keep the loveliest one and lock up her sisters. Those towers of rings crushing your fingers? Trade them for a lone blockbuster.
The pendulum—or should we say triple strand of pearls—has swung in the other direction. Legacy pieces from historic brands (talk to me, Harry Winston) are what we want now. One of those Tiffany & Co. crosses, perhaps, or a Verdura black-and-white cuff. The desire, in other words, is for ladylike jewelry that is clean and sleek and has enduring value, the kind that’s as good as (sometimes better than!) money in the bank.
What’s driving this interest? It’s not the latest TikTok aesthetic. Far from it. Fashion may have something to do with it. The slender sheaths on Prada’s 2024 fall runway are crying out for a massive bubble-shaped cocktail ring; those sleek shifts at Michael Kors’s show clearly crave a Schlumberger Bird on a Rock. As it turns out, a subtly chic ensemble in double-face cashmere provides the perfect backdrop for these singular baubles. Then again, there is really no reason your everyday outfit would not benefit from an extravagant jewel. In fact, at the Cartier presentation in Paris in January, a spectacular piece was pinned to the waistband of a pair of blue jeans, and it looked perfectly happy to be there.
As with many things, a worthy collection is nothing without good bones. By that we mean a foundation laid with classics to last forever. Already have versions of these? Well, you know what they say about stockpiling gold in uncertain times.

A Hollywood star takes on a new role. These are the results. By Leena Kim
A 6,225-carat emerald started it all. “Some gemstones blow you away immediately,” says Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard. This rock was the second-largest emerald ever unearthed in Zambia’s Kagem mine. “With its beautiful hue and strong energy, I knew this would be a hugely important stone for us.” Scheufele snapped it up and deposited it in the Chopard vaults, which is where it remained until recently, when the maison’s gem cutters were given the green light to start chiseling.
Julia Roberts then got dibs on the first batch. The actress, who is also Chopard’s global ambassador, worked with Scheufele to turn the emeralds into a one-of-a-kind high jewelry parure, mixing them with turquoise (her favorite stone) and hot pink rubellites to mimic the exuberant patterns one might find in India, one of her favorite places. “The culture, the color, the way they express themselves with their jewelry and their saris, all of it means something,” Roberts tells T&C . “It’s intentional and joyful, and that has always had a profound effect on me.”
Now so has the experience of playing with priceless gems. “Chopard is training me,” Roberts says. “I’m starting to really be comfortable with some fancy things in a way that I wasn’t before they got their hands on me.”
Nostalgia for the ’90s keeps its tight grip. Case in point: all the corded necklaces featuring sculptural pendants that have made the rounds on stars (Jennifer Lawrence) and runways (the Row) alike.
