27 Best Winter Travel Outfits for Women (Trending)

Winter Travel Outfits for Women.  Traveling during the winter can be a tough feat for most of us. You want to look cute but you also want to be comfortable. You want to be warm but you don’t want to be too warm (because the plane and the airport will be heated!) and you want to be able to shed the layers if necessary. Sound familiar? It might seem like a tall order, but girl, we have got you covered! In this article, we will be sharing 27 super trendy, super cute, and super comfortable ensembles to inspire you in your travel wear preparation!

Tips for Travel Wear in Winter

Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when you are planning your travel wear during the cold season:

  • Keep your travel destination in mind. If you are traveling from a cooler place to a warmer place, maybe you don’t want to bring a super heavy coat along. Or if vice versa you will want to pack accordingly.
  • Layers are your best friend. Layers are non-negotiable for traveling in the winter. If you are starting to feel too warm you can always shed a layer or two. And if you are not feeling warm enough, have an extra sweater or cardigan on hand. For this purpose, carry a slightly larger carry-on and save some space for that extra layer.
  • Carry a scarf. A scarf is kind of like a secret weapon if you think about it. Not only are scarves a great way to accessorize your outfit during the winter, but they are small enough to stash in a purse or carry-on bag and pull out if your neck is cold or if you want to wrap something around your shoulders.
  • Choose footwear wisely. Again, this will take some forethought. Where are you landing and will you be in the snow? Will you be doing a lot of walking once landing or are you going straight from plane to car? Are you somebody whose feet are always warm or always cold? These are all things you should think about when deciding what shoes to wear for traveling in the winter.
  • Carry an extra pair of socks. Traveling with extra socks in your carry-on or purse will bring you a lot of peace of mind. Have you been walking in the snow? Switch out those socks once checking in. Are your feet super cold? Pop on that extra pair. Carrying extra socks is a lifesaver.

Now, let’s get on with the outfits!

1. Teddy Bear Coat, Ripped Jeans & Combat Boots

2. Wool Coat, Turtleneck Sweater & Over The Knee Boots

When I’m going straight from the airport to an event, I’ll go for a dressier outfit even in the winter. A tailored wool coat, tunic sweater, and leggings with over-the-knee boots can be comfortable for shorter plane rides. I know I can always rely on my Stuart Weitzman OTK boots for maximum comfort – you can read my full review on them here .

3. Moto Jacket, Relaxed Jeans & Block Heeled Mules

If you want to dress up casual pieces likes relaxed jeans and a tee, block heeled mules can be just as comfortable as a pair of sneakers. Opt for a lower heel height and they’ll elevate anything you wear while traveling. A moto jacket makes the perfect layering piece to this outfit because it ensures that you won’t get overheated indoors.

4. Shearling Biker Jacket, Denim & Embellished Combat Boots

For an effortlessly chic winter travel outfit, I swear by my shearling biker jacket. It offers the same edgy vibe as a leather jacket but keeps you warmer with the faux shearling lining. I love styling it with some dark skinny jeans and combat boots.

7. Biker Jacket, Faux Leather Leggings & High Top Sneakers

Faux leather leggings are the comfiest yet most stylish piece you can wear on an airplane. If I’m striving for comfort, I’ll wear it with a sweatshirt or hoodie and high-top sneakers. I’d recommend trying a pair of vinyl leggings this winter for an eye-catching look – this one is my go-to travel piece.

13 Winter Outfit Ideas That Will Keep Your Wardrobe Inspired All Season Long

travel outfit ideas for winter

@chrisellelim / Instagram

Winter always starts with holiday celebrations and continues with the excitement of a new year, meaning there’s plenty of opportunities to flaunt a fantastic outfit. This season also offers a chance to step outside of your comfort zone by exploring bold textures, trending colors , and voluminous fabrics. Whether you’re bracing the frigid temps or lucky enough to bask in a warm winter paradise, there’s lots of ways to stay chic throughout the winter months. Keep reading for 13 of our favorite winter outfit ideas , all of which will help you carry seasonal vibes and current trends into 2024.

Casual Chilling

@sofiarichiegrainge / Instagram

We’ve got shearling-lined jackets on the mind this winter—and of course, Sofia Riche Grainge is serving peak inspiration for styling the trend. Here, she paired a cozy moto version with laid-back light wash jeans and platform boots , topping it all off with a pair of colorful sunglasses.

Monochrome Fur

Getty Images

Monochrome outfits can sometimes veer into basic territory, but a smart combination of textures keeps an all-black ensemble exciting. Take note from Selena Gomez and build your look around a voluminous faux fur coat. From there, she paired the sophisticated outerwear with flared slacks and velvety black pumps. After-work martinis, anyone?

Pleated Mini

Micro mini skirt season is upon us, as model Kaia Gerber gracefully demonstrates here. Follow in her footsteps by selecting a playful style—featuring mini pleats and a ribbed texture—which seamlessly complements a semi-sheer turtleneck.

Bold Blazer

Consider this chic, tailored outfit as your blueprint for winter soirées, happy hours, and everything in between. Here, Insecure alum Issa Rae pairs a stylish oversized blazer with a white mini dress. Gold hoops and slouchy western boots complete this sleek look and leave you feeling more confident than ever.

Modern Penny Lane

Dressing to impress at weekend brunch (read: nailing the effortlessly chic vibe) can be a delicate balance. Here, Emily Ratajkowski selects easy-breezy outerwear that reminds us of a certain free-spirited star from Almost Famous . She keeps this '70s inspiration on trend by pairing it with a turtleneck, riding boots, and statement gold hoops.

Sky-High Shorts

@izzipoopi / Instagram

The no-pants look is not for the faint of heart, but we promise it comes with a high-fashion payoff, especially when you pair micro shorts with a sweet buttoned cardigan. The secret to making this statement piece more wearable (and a suitable winter outfit idea)? Layer a pair of tights or semi-sheer leggings underneath for added coverage and warmth. Voilà!

Polished in Pink

@bonitravo / Instagram

We’re all for some sweater weather inspiration, so it’s safe to say that we’ve got major heart eyes for this look from Toni Bravo. Bold knitwear —here in a sweet, Barbie-esque bubblegum hue—brings life to even the gloomiest of winter days. Paired with a pleated maxi skirt and sleek handbag, the pink crewneck hits another level of elegance.

Keep It Colorful

@ashleygraham / Instagram

When it comes to transforming unexpected basics into polished outfits, Ashley Graham never fails to deliver. Here, she levels up a staple striped sweater by wearing it with modern wide-leg leather pants. Toss on some chunky footwear , and you’ve got a recipe for cold-weather dressing success.

Chriselle Lim knows her way around easygoing yet chic winter outfit ideas, and this muted-tone look is certainly no exception. Consider this skirt and sweater combo as your go-to formula for seasonal festivities. Pair a forest green chunky knit with a similarly hued skirt, then amp up the contrast with some rough-around-the-edges chunky boots.

Metallic Sheer

Looking for an evening-ready winter outfit idea on a milder day? Consider this your opportunity to rock a trend-forward sheer look . Follow Storm Reid’s lead by layering a fitted blazer over an embellished mesh skirt, then adding a little bit of glam jewelry to bring the whole outfit together.

Funky Florals

@itsmekellieb / Instagram

It’s easy to fall in love with a sheer floral number. When combined with a vibrant orange puffer coat , though, this gown goes from darling to totally breathtaking. Here, Kellie B pairs the unexpected duo with a complementary red lip , a sleek black clutch, and classic Vans.

Prep in Your Step

We’ll give it to Hailey Bieber : She’s got a talent for taking trends to the next level. When stepping out in chilly weather, the Rhode founder layered a longline coat and a snug beige sweater over a pleated skirt. We’re taking this as inspiration for our next coffee run, thank you very much.

Airport Style: A Chic, Winter Outfit Idea For Sweatpants (It’s Foolproof)

Sweatpants & travel naturally go hand in hand. There’s nothing comfier than a pair of sweats, and nothing more uncomfortable than a tiny airplane seat (except, maybe, the airport lounge seat). So when it comes time to ‘stow your bags under the seat in front of you’…I’d like to be ready for a long haul. Especially with flight delays at an all time high (which will likely continue for another “decade” , thanks to staffing shortages), we might find ourselves, on our next flight, curled up in an airport for who knows how long .

My vote? Bring on the sweatpants, baby.

But as much as I love a good pair of sweatpants, the airport vibe I’m going for is more Bella Hadid in joggers, rather than, say, high school debate team, carrying pillow. So for the past several spring, summer, & falls, I’ve landed on something like this:

airport style winter outfit idea

Frank & Eileen travel set (s) | sneakers | jacket (xs) | sunglasses | suitcase | similar TUMI backpack | headphones

While this outfit has served me well – especially on overnight flights – once the weather gets truly cold, what’s the plan? How to make this (or something similar) winter ready?

Winter Airport Outfit, With Sweatpants: 3 Tips To Make It Chic

Summer or winter, planes & airports can be tricky places to dress for – they can ping-pong between freezing cold or stuffy & hot. Dressing in layers is key, regardless of season. While my summer airport outfits rely on lighter-weight pieces, for winter, I get cozy .

1. Start With A Matching Set (Full-Length)

When pulling together a cool, cohesive airport look with sweatpants, I almost always start with a matching set. And 99% of the time, that set is black or navy. I can (and have) spilled coffee on dark sweatpants – nobody knows! Black or navy sweatpants often look more expensive than they are, too, and black sweatpants can also – at a distance – vibe as real pants.

winter airport style. matching set.

LEFT: GAP hoodie (s) | GAP sweatpants (s) RIGHT: Vuori sweatshirt (s) | Vuori sweatpants (s)

One key change I make in winter is to swap my usual cropped set for a full length sweatsuit, complete with a cozy, long-sleeve sweatshirt. Not only are these pieces warmer overall, but they’re easier to style with coats & boots.

What about that Frank & Eileen’s ‘Greece’ travel set ? While it’s not my top choice for cold winter travel, I can still make it work – keep scrolling to see.

2. Pick Your Shoes: UGGs or Sneakers?

For me, the airport footwear choice in the winter comes down to UGG boots or sneakers. If I’m leaving the cold to head somewhere warm & sunny (or vice versa), I’ll typically wear sneakers on the plane. But if I’m headed somewhere cold & snowy in both directions, it’s UGGs for me. And I’ve found that sneakers and/or UGGs with a bit of a platform are especially welcome to keep pant hems from dragging (#shortgirlproblems).

best shoes to wear to the airport in winter

My two go-to shoes for traveling in winter are:

  • Sneakers : Adidas’ Gazelle Bold (nice platform, suuuper squishy and comfortable inside)
  • UGGs : UGG Mini Platform Boots (fuzzy inside, like all UGGs, and the platform isn’t too hard to still for walking)

Platform Sneakers, Perfect For Travel

Ugg boots, perfect for travel, 3. grab a coat.

Not only does flying with a coat save some room in the suitcase, but this layer helps protect against a suddenly freezing airport or plane (and is really useful once you land, too). There are two main styles of jackets I prefer to travel with in winter – an unlined, wool coat or a chic, elevated puffer. Comfy on the plane, but can also be used as a night-out jacket in a pinch, and pairs well with virtually any outfit (sweatpants, jeans, trousers, dresses, etc).

best coat to wear to the airport in winter

My two favorite jackets for winter traveling:

  • A chic, elevated puffer : GAP’s Big Puff Jacket (in ivory faux-leather)
  • A lightweight (unlined) wool coat : I have an old Max Mara ( current version ) that was wildly expensive (but annoyingly, worth every penny), but I’ve been really impressed by how GAP’s unlined wool coat looks on Amy. Similar vibe, for sure. Or grab Naked Cashmere’s coat on sale for a mid-range option. It’s a stunner.

Chic, Elevated Puffers For Travel

Unlined wool coats for travel, putting it all together: my 3 favorite sweatsuits for travel (plus shoes & coats).

It should surprise no one to hear that I have some pretty strong opinions about exactly which sweatsuits I like to travel in. I highlight my top two winter sweatsuits below – including styling them with the sneakers, UGGs, and winter coats – as well as a strategy for making my summer set work.

A. Gap’s Cargo Sweatpants & Hoodie

travel outfit ideas for winter

hoodie (s) | sweatpants (s) | sneakers | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

This set is the set I’ve been living in lately. The sweatpants have some sort of bungee cord at the bottom (so they can look like joggers if you choose), and have cargo pockets. The high-rise waistband, is thankfully, elastic, but not too tight. The hooded sweatshirt is oversized and comfy, and this set machine washes (and dries) beautifully. The hoodie layers nicely over a t-shirt, too.

With A Wool Coat…

travel outfit ideas for winter

hoodie (s) | sweatpants (s) | coat | sneakers | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

To elevate the look, I add a wool coat. Because this hoodie is a little bulky (it’s actually not bad, but it *is* still a hoodie), this is where an unlined wool coat really shines. And I appreciate unlined wool coats with some dropped shoulders or a bit of room in the body so they’re actually comfortable to wear.

With a Puffer….

travel outfit ideas for winter

hoodie (s) | sweatpants (s) | puffer (s) | sneakers | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

I love the faux-leather puffer, I think it really elevates the look from something that’s just sporty. I also like that the unexpected color adds a bit of Fashion Girl vibes.

B. Vuori Wide-Leg Sweatsuit

travel outfit ideas for winter

sweatshirt (s) | sweatpants (s) | puffer (s) | UGGs | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

I bought Vuori’s Sedona wide-leg sweatpants last year in ‘salt’ (with this matching half zip ) and they were so good I knew I needed them in black, too (you can see the lighter set in my ski packing video ). The fabric feels really high-end, and the wide-leg sweatpants are current and cool. This set also machine washes & dries like a champ (even the drawstings don’t disappear into the waistband).

I think Vuori may have played around with the waistband of the sweatpants a bit – the newer black ones fit a *little* higher (and stay up much better) than last year’s version.

With a Wool Coat….

travel outfit ideas for winter

sweatshirt (s) | sweatpants (s) | similar coat | UGGs | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

While my wrap coat would work just fine with this outfit, I wanted to show how the extra-long legs of this sweatsuit (and the cleaner lines overall) make it perfect for a longer, more tailored coat. Same idea, just a more polished vibe.

With a Puffer…

travel outfit ideas for winter

That same ivory puffer totally works here, too. Because it’s so freaking good.

C. Frank & Eileen Triple Fleece Travel Set

travel outfit ideas for winter

Frank & Eileen travel set (s) | Vuori puffer (s) | UGGs | similar TUMI backpack | suitcase

Aaaand now we come to my beloved Frank & Eileen travel set! While Frank & Eileen does make longer-sleeve sweatshirts as well as true, full-length joggers ( see them all, here ), their cropped, ‘Greece’ set is still my favorite. As I’ve mentioned before, all of the travel sets from the brand are incredibly well made, and basically magic: even after overnight flights, I emerge from the plane, looking completely put-together.

It’s one of my favorite purchases ever, so I wanted to try and make it work for winter travel, too.

My first issue is that cropped pants + long wool coats don’t always work well (from a proportion standpoint). And while I can usually figure it out (especially with denim), there was something about cropped sweatpants + wool coats that completely defeated me. Literally none of my wool coats worked. Solution? Puffer.

The second issue I had was with bare ankles in winter. I simply couldn’t figure out how to wear cropped sweatpants, sneakers, and socks . No matter what I tried, it was just too much sock. I’ll leave this problem to Gen Z. Solution? UGGs

The final look? Voila…

travel outfit ideas for winter

This look works! I could easily add socks for extra warmth, and I did have to mess with the puffer a bit. My ivory puffer was so cropped that the longer hemline of my Frank & Eileen caplet looked a bit silly. But when I turned to a more traditional length puffer (and one that’s especially warm & cozy) everything came together nicely.

Hope this helps, Gang. Wishing you happy, comfy, and cozy travels!

Winter Outfits to Keep You Warm While Traveling

These performance pieces will keep you warm from head to toe—but still look so good you’ll find yourself wanting to wear them no matter what the temperature.

Ministry of Supply 3D Print-Knit Sweater Dress

travel outfit ideas for winter

If you think itchy and bulky when you think sweater dress, you need to check out Ministry of Supply’s revolutionary winter travel outfits. This sweater dress is made using a unique 3D print-knit process, meaning it’s created using one seamless piece (so no annoying seams rubbing you the wrong way). Instead of scratchy wool, the dress is made from a knit acrylic/PBT blend that has stretch, shaping, moisture-wicking, and plenty of warmth. This dress is super stylish and can be easily dressed up or down depending on your day/night plans.

Smartwool Cozy Flip Mitt

travel outfit ideas for winter

The dilemma—it’s freezing out but you still need to use your phone, pay for something, or just use your hands. If you’ve got Smartwool’s Cozy Flip Mitts on, you don’t have to take off your entire mitten just to use your fingers. This glove/mitten hybrid lets you fold back the mitten top to reveal fingerless gloves so you can use your fingertips when they’re needed, without freezing off your hand.

Columbia Powder Keg Jacket

travel outfit ideas for winter

Although Columbia’s Powder Keg Jacket (available for women and men ) is designed for the slopes, it’s stylish enough that it can top off your everyday winter outfits without looking too sporty. The women’s version is available in a travel-friendly synthetic version that uses Omni-Heat insulation and a thermal reflective layer that provides warmth without the bulk of down. Even if you’re not on skis, you’ll appreciate all the built-in features (like plenty of zippered and hidden pockets).

Ridge Merino Pants & Top

travel outfit ideas for winter

On ultra-cold days when your regular jeans just don’t cut it, you need to add in a base layer. I love the Inversion bottoms from Ridge Merino ( available for men too ) because they are the absolute thinnest leggings I’ve ever tried, thanks to their 100 percent Merino wool construction. If you plan on wearing them solo as well, check out the cool new Atmospheric River Print , which was inspired by a weather pattern that causes heavy snow. I like to pair it with the matching Inversion Midweight Crew which is slightly heavier than the bottoms, but is still slim enough that you could layer it under a sweater.

Solarsphere Gloves

travel outfit ideas for winter

Solar power isn’t just for gadgets—add some natural heat to your winter outfits with Seirus Innovation Solarsphere Ace Gloves , which use solar-absorbing insulation to increase the warmth of your gloves by up to 10 degrees. And, the gloves have a touchscreen-compatible finger-pad, so you don’t have to take them off to text or swipe.

Ruth Tundra Boots

travel outfit ideas for winter

The Ruth Tundra Boots go with any winter outfit, from casual to dressy, thanks to their basic black style. The sleek waterproof exterior hides a cozy faux-fur lined interior that will keep your feet toasty all day long. Unlike many winter boots, these have great arch support and a sturdy sole that’s practically slip-proof (even on ice).

Vince Camuto Classic Peacoat

travel outfit ideas for winter

A winter jacket doesn’t automatically have to mean puffy coat—this classic peacoat from Vince Camuto is made from a water-resistant melton wool blend, so you can wear it around a fashionable city on a drizzly or snowy day and still stay warm and dry.

Fleece Leggings

travel outfit ideas for winter

These basic black leggings have a warm secret—an ultra-soft fleece lining that will keep your legs even warmer than pants do. The leggings feel like sweatpants but still look great with dressier winter outfits, so you don’t have to consign all your dresses to the back of the closet until warmer weather.

Flannel-Lined Jeans

travel outfit ideas for winter

Not into tights? You can still have secret coziness (but with a more rugged look) with these flannel-lined jeans . On the outside, they look like normal, straight-fit denim—but the inside is lined with the same warm flannel as your favorite pajamas.

The Lucy Cardigan

travel outfit ideas for winter

It never hurts to have an extra layer when you travel, and it’s even better if that extra layer can pull double duty as a bag—like the  Lucy Cardigan  from ScotteVest . This sweater has four pockets (including two that are zippered and hidden), so you can use it to carry your phone, cards, and keys, and leave your purse behind.

There is one major difference between being at home in the winter and traveling when it’s cold: the amount of time you’ll spend outdoors.

When you’re traveling, you’ll likely spend extended periods of time outdoors sightseeing. Don’t be unprepared. Read this winter packing list for cold weather!

Cold Weather Winter Packing List

Table of contents.

While on a trip to Paris , I observed countless travelers shivering in misery as they stood in line for one to two hours in the rain to see the Catacombs. (I bought my ticket online and still waited an hour!)

One girl said, “this sucks” as she stood in line behind me wearing a light military jacket, capri leggings, and white knit sneakers. She wasn’t the only one unprepared for the low temperatures in Paris that day.

And it’s not just Paris. You’ll encounter extremely cold destinations when you travel in the winter. Unlike winter at home, you have to be more prepared when you’re on the road because you can’t let the weather keep you from exploring your destination.

Tip: The sun might set as early as 4pm in some European destinations in the winter. Keep this in mind when you leave your accommodation for the day. Bring layers if you plan to stay out until the evening time.

Why the Weather Matters

You should always check the extended forecast when planning what to pack for a trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe whilst avoid packing all the wrong things.

You not only want to check the temperature but you also want to make note of the sun AND the wind chill factor. 5C / 41F can feel much colder when there are high winds. Likewise, it can also feel warmer during the daytime if the sun is out in a cloudless sky.

It’s important to note that bulky fabrics won’t necessarily make you feel warmer! You have to choose the right cold weather fabrics and layer your items strategically as explained below (and also check out the preparation video below too!).

Watch this video to learn what to pack and prepare for winter travel!

Quality Cold Weather Clothing is Worth It

Quality cold weather clothing tends to be expensive but well worth the expense. There’s no point in spending money to travel half-way around the world to have a miserable experience.

With that being said, I do like to save money when possible, so I buy these types of items during sales such as Black Friday , Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the after-Christmas sales.  For a little more help, the video shared below can also give ideas on how to choose winter clothing.

Choosing clothing for winter just got easier—watch this  video  to learn more!

Many times, Amazon or Sierra Trading Post will have closeouts and offer cheaper prices than other retailers, so this is where I shop at other times throughout the year.

In fact, I kept an eye on both of these websites for almost a year until I found the perfect waterproof jacket, which I feature below.

Note: if you’re used to warm climates or get cold easily, then do not skip out on any of the below essentials!

Add the below items to your winter packing list to ensure you stay warm and dry when you’re traveling in cold weather:

Columbia Carson Pass II Waterproof Jacket

Waterproof Jacket

Not all waterproof jackets were created equal. And when it’s constantly raining while you’re on a two-hour walking tour of a city like London, you’ll be grateful you invested in a quality rain coat.

After testing out various jackets, I bought the above Columbia Carson waterproof jacket and couldn’t have been more happy with my purchase. Not only was it 100% waterproof but the insulating Omni-Heat material also helped keep me warm, too. ( For 1x-3x Sizes Click here .)

Find out the benefits of the Columbia Carson jacket in my video review !

I chose this jacket because I didn’t want to wear an outdoor-look. I appreciate that it offers a balance of functionality with a classic look, which is perfect for me, which I reiterate in the video review above.

While I was able to squeeze it into my carryon, it isn’t a packable jacket so it’s best worn on the airplane and while in transit. However, if you’re traveling this time of year then you’ll probably want to wear it all the time and won’t need to pack it anyway.

J Crew Halle Merino Wool Sweater

Warm Layers

Underneath your waterproof jacket you’ll want to wear warm layers. I like a nice, classic sweater in an ultra-warm yet travel-friendly fabric such as merino wool or cashmere. Since these items are on the pricey side, I stock up during sales and re-wear them over the years.

Other fabrics can keep you warm, too. However, merino wool tends to be the best travel fabric because it’s the most functional yet it’s so lightweight and packable!

I’m obsessed with merino wool sweaters because they’re light yet incredibly warm. I’ve had them for years and they remain in good quality even though I’ve worn them repeatedly. Depending on how cold it is, I’ll layer two of them to keep me warm.

To get a full list of choices, check out the best merino wool sweaters for women !

While merino wool reigns supreme for many travelers, some are allergic or don’t like wool; cashmere has always been a suitable replacement but a costly option in comparison. It seems things have now changed with new brands emerging and offering products with these natural fibers at relatively affordable price points.

Readers love these cashmere sweaters for their polished and timeless look, incredible warmth, and versatility. Alternatively sweaters made from Alpaca are another great option for cold weather.

Learn why merino wool is the best fabric for travel !

Icebreaker Thermal Top

Thermal Top

When it’s very cold, I also layer thermals underneath all my clothing. They’re made from merino wool – and these are truly the absolute best fabric for thermals. If you’re only going to invest in one merino wool item make sure it’s thermals!

I have both grey and black thermal tops; I’ve chosen neutral colors so they can double up as regular clothes if needed.

For a thinner layer (that’s not quite as warm), thermals made from silk are a popular option. I own these thermal top and bottom , which I can either wear under my merino wool thermals or underneath clothing that requires a more discreet underlayer, such as a nice blouse.

It’s important to note that thermals are not warm when worn on their own. They’re meant to be layered under other clothes and that’s when they help insulate the warmth.

Choose from this and this round up of the best thermals for women!

winter-packing-list

Icebreaker Thermal Leggings

Thermal Bottoms

In addition to wearing thermal tops, I also wear thermal bottoms , too. Jeans are the most practical pants for cold weather travels to cities and can keep you quite warm when paired with a layer underneath.

While wearing jeans without an underlayer might be fine for home, it’s not the same when you’re traveling. It’s surprising how cold your legs can get when you’re standing outside in the rain and wind for hours at a time.

I have both merino wool and silk thermal pants, you can also wear  fleece-lined leggings , merino wool leggings , or tights underneath your pants to stay warm in cold weather. As a bonus, you can also pair leggings or tights with dresses and skirts for mild winter days or when you want to dress up. Read this post for more info.

At 5C / 40F in Paris, I layered both tights and thermals underneath my jeans. The rain and wind made it extra cold!

Our readers chose these as the warmest cold weather pants !

Sorel Waterproof Chelsea Boots

Waterproof Shoes

It goes without saying that you should avoid knit shoes and stick to leather (or faux leather) shoes for travel. Leather sneakers and leather ankle boots are two of the most practical choices because they take up less space than tall boots. (However, if you’re going to extremely cold destinations, take the tall boots as your legs will need the extra coverage.)

Ankle boots are by far the most highly recommended shoes by our readers and we agree. Boots win over sneakers for us because they offer more warmth covering your ankles and allowing you to discreetly wear layers and high socks underneath your jeans. (I even cover more on proper winter shoes in the video below!)

Watch this video to get the lowdown on the best shoes for winter!

Boots will also more likely keep your feet dry preventing rain from sliding inside your shoes, unlike sneakers.

To be on the safe side, choose boots that specifically state that they are waterproof. Unless you’re headed to the snow, skip the snow boots and hiking shoes and opt for regular boots with waterproof features instead.

Leather (or faux leather) boots can also be waterproof but look for ones with a rubber sole so they also prevent you from slipping. You can use a waterproof spray for extra protection.

Take a look at the waterproof boots most recommended by the readers!

Darn Tough Vermont 1/4 Cushion Socks

One of the mistakes I made on my trip was to take my regular socks instead of heavy-duty merino wool socks. My feet were cold! Big mistake since keeping your hands and feet warm helps to keep the rest of your body warm, too. I immediately ordered the Darn Tough Vermont 1/4 Cushion Socks  as recommended by TFG readers.

One thing to note is to try on your boots with your socks in advance. You might need to get half a size of shoe larger to accommodate the thickness of the socks.

But whatever you do, make sure your shoes fit! Overly large shoes mean that your feet are not supported properly and that’s not good when you’re spending days on your feet walking.

This is the full round-up of the warmest socks for travel as recommended by the TFG readers!

Readers Top Picks: Echo Classic Wool Gloves

Not only is it essential to keep your feet warm but also your hands, too. I wasn’t happy with my current gloves so I didn’t bring them on my trip and I really regretted that decision!

Fortunately, I found an Echo and they had these wool-blend gloves. They were perfect and were available in various sizes. As a plus, they were thin but warm.

These are our readers favorite gloves for the cold weather.

C.C Cable Knit Faux Fur Pom Fleece Beanie

The next essential accessory you need to add to your winter packing list is a hat . Even if your clothing isn’t the warmest, a hat will help keep you warm.

I bought an inexpensive cable knit hat from Amazon and it’s one of my must-have essentials. It’s made a massive difference when I feel cold and I highly suggest you don’t forget to bring one on your trip.

For more hat options, take a look at this . I like grey winter accessories as they match with everything!

Thermal Winter Neck Warmer Gaitor

Another inexpensive but warm winter accessory that’s always on my packing list for cold weather is a woven scarf from H&M similar to this . It’s my favorite thing ever and I even use it as a blanket, too. I love the size because I can drape it over myself as a poncho. I’ve used it like this over a jacket and it adds another amazing layer of warmth.

Alternatively, opt for an easy-to-wear neck warmer like the cable knit style shown above. This is a packable option that doesn’t take up as much space as a blanket scarf but keeps your neck incredibly warm.

Choose a neutral print or a color to add a little interest to a solid travel wardrobe.

You can find a variety of warm scarves here !

Repel Travel Mini Umbrella

Travel Umbrella

Last but not least, I also recommend bringing a travel umbrella . Even though I had a waterproof jacket, I packed my travel umbrella last minute and it was a great decision!

Even though a waterproof jacket keeps you dry, after spending a long period of time outdoors you start to feel cold so an umbrella minimizes the amount of rain that hits you (and your face).

I was also able to share it with my friends who weren’t as prepared for the weather as me. Bonus!

Choose more protection with these picks for the best travel umbrella !

Compass Rose Travel Packing Cubes

The Best Method to Pack for Winter

The most efficient way to organize a winter wardrobe is to utilize packing cubes. While I’ve tried many brands over the years, I decided to create my own version that will take your packing to the next level: the Compass Rose Travel Packing Cubes shown above!

The 4-Piece Set of Carryon Packing Cubes are sized to fit the exact width of a carry-on suitcase and they also have a unique color-coded and numbered organization system.

I put together a five-part YouTube series showing you the different methods to use packing cubes. If you use this specific packing strategy, they can also compress your belongings. This is the secret to traveling carry-on only!

How I Rock My Winter Packing List

View this post on Instagram Just came back from a quick weekend trip to Paris and I'm more in love with the city than ever before! ? Due to the extremely cold weather, I made sure to bundle up in my thickest blanket scarves, thermals, hats, scarves and a waterproof jacket. I also stuck to a neutral color palette (with the exception of the suitcase, of course!) and quickly noticed that local outfits followed the same route. Such a great trip overall – full post and video coming soon! A post shared by alex TravelFashionGirl.com (@travelfashiongirl) on Nov 27, 2017 at 9:19pm PST

Laurie

This is super helpful for my upcoming Christmas Markets river cruise in December!

Kelsey

Thank you so much for all the advice, it’s been very helpful!

I am traveling to London and then Rome, March 1-8. I bought a pair of seasonal classic Toms for my trip (Toms Womens Classic Woolen Black Casual Shoe 6.5 Women US and was wondering if these would be a good idea? I’m planning on wearing waterproof boots on the plane, and also sticking in a pair of running shoes. I’m planning on doing just one carryon backpack for my 8 day trip.

Thanks so much!

Alex

Hi Kelsey, your shoe choices sound perfect! Make sure your shoes are comfortable for all the walking you are bound to do. Nothing will ruin your trip faster then having sore feet. Boots are very practical, they are great for keeping your feet dry and warm, and they are also a European footwear staple. We recommend that you try and pack no more than three pairs of shoes based on your activities so your boots, sneakers and Toms casual shoes would be fantastic to pack. Try microfleece. It’s warm, comes as thermals, easy wash, easy dry. I can wear Smartwool socks but no other wool.

Hi Sharron, thank you for sharing your recommendation with us, so always awesome to hear our readers favorite brands and products! 🙂

I always travel with hand warmers which last up to 10 hours during cold months.

Great idea!

JordyJords

This is so so so amazing! I cannot say how helpful this post was! I am a horrible “packer” when I travel – I tend to bring my house with me – and it is a skill I need to improve for sure! 😉 I am traveling to Prague and Vienna in 10 days and although I know what I need to bring, it was great to mentally go over my packing list as I read your post. Thank you!!! Your blog is amazing!

Thanks you!!!

Jenny Oldfield

I was wondering if anyone can help. I get rashes every time I wear wool and occasionally man-made fabrics. Is there anything I can do? A few years ago I came across the 1st wool cardigan that didn’t give me a rash so I bought 1 only to find I broke out in rashes wherever it touched my skin, we tried washing it several times following the washing instructions but it didn’t help. I seem fine with sheepskin rugs, but I’ve recently found out I’m allergic to dust. Do wool fabrics hold more dust or carry more loose fibres? Any help or advice would be great as we’re going to Disneyland Paris in early February and have been warned it will be cold. Thanks in Advance Jenny

Buckle up: 11 tips for taking a safe winter road trip

Melissa Klurman

Snow, ice, sleet, slush — unless you're planning a winter road trip specifically to avoid snow , you need to know how to deal with the season's inclement weather, preferably before you turn the key in the ignition.

Not all winter road trips will involve extreme weather conditions. However, you don't need to be driving in Alaska to run into snow-covered roads, as witnessed by the quick-moving snowstorm near the nation's capital that stranded thousands of passengers on a 40-mile stretch of road for more than 24 hours at the beginning of the year.

"Many drivers don't know what to do when the weather gets cold," says Benjamin Leuchter, a test and development driver for Volkswagen. That doesn't mean you shouldn't plan winter driving adventures — in fact, we're big fans of ski trips . It just means you'll want to prepare to drive in snowy conditions to avoid getting stuck, according to Leuchter.

Before hitting the road this winter, follow these tips from Leuchter and other car safety experts for staying safe during a cold-weather road trip.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Bring winter safety essentials

travel outfit ideas for winter

"Having some essential items in your vehicle before hitting the road is key to not only give you peace of mind, but to ensure you're prepared in case of bad weather," says Suzanne Johansson, a safety engineer at Chevrolet.

In addition to a snow brush and an ice scraper, Johansson recommends keeping a snow shovel and abrasive material such as sand or cat litter in your car. You'll also want to have jumper cables, a flashlight and emergency flares in case you encounter unexpected problems.

While you may not want to wear your heaviest coat, boots and gloves when you get behind the wheel (it can be hard to drive when you're overly bundled), Johansson recommends stowing cold-weather clothing in your car. She also suggests keeping a blanket or sleeping bag in your emergency winter car kit should you find yourself in need of extra layers to stay warm while stuck or stranded.

Pack a DIY car emergency kit

On top of winter-specific car items, the experts at AAA strongly recommend packing a well-stocked emergency kit before venturing out in your vehicle. Create a bag that includes a cellphone charger, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first-aid kit, drinking water and extra snacks and food for travelers and pets to keep in your car.

Prepare your car for winter

Prior to starting your trip, you'll want to set aside time for getting your car checked by an expert. "Have your dealer or a trusted mechanic do any scheduled service on your vehicle [before you embark on a trip in wintry conditions]," Johannson says. During this service visit, make sure your battery, tires, headlights and brake lights, wiper blades and other critical parts are tested and ready for winter, she adds.

Check your tires

Since your tires are the only part of your car that actually touch the road, it's especially important to make sure they're ready to roll before your winter road trip begins. Start by checking the tread depth, which you can do by inserting a quarter (head first) into the tread, advises AAA. If you can see the top of Washington's head, it's time for new tires.

Also, check the tire pressure on all four tires, especially in winter when they tend to drop with the temperature, Leuchter says. Routinely check and adjust your tire pressures to the recommended levels for your vehicle, which are listed inside the driver's side door jamb.

Hit the car wash

Having a clean car may not be top of mind when you're preparing for a winter road trip, but it's a commonly missed tip that our experts say should be prioritized. This is especially true for cars with advanced safety features that rely on sensors and cameras. In the front, keep the windshield, front grill, front bumper area and headlamps clean. In the rear, make sure the rear camera lens and rear bumper are clean.

Download the right apps

Another way to prepare for a winter road trip is to load your phone with helpful apps. Here are a few options:

  • Weather Underground, Weather, Weather Bug: Any weather app that provides both long-range forecasts and emergency weather alerts based on your current GPS (like these) will ensure you receive up-to-date information about driving conditions throughout your journey.
  • GasBuddy: This app is designed to help you find the cheapest gas as you drive to your destination, but it also doubles as a way to locate the closest service station in an emergency.
  • ChargePoint or ChargeHub: Travelers with electric vehicles will want to use one of these apps to find nearby charging locations.
  • Waze: Use this directions app to get real-time, crowd-sourced road conditions and hazards.
  • Google Maps: Through this app, you can download directions for offline use so you can always know how to get to your destination, even if you lose your phone signal.
  • TripWhistle: One of our favorite travel apps , TripWhistle maps your location and allows you to easily text or send your GPS coordinates.
  • Hotel Tonight: Another TPG go-to app , this last-minute booking app can locate the closest available hotel room and find you the lowest price, should you find yourself needing to get off the road and take a break.

Read the manual

When was the last time you read your car's safety manual? It's another overlooked prep step, says Johansson. Before you set out, take some time to review the sections of your owner's manual that cover anti-lock brakes, traction control and four- or all-wheel drive (if equipped) so you're aware of your vehicle's features and how to use them prior to needing them.

Skip cruise control

While you may be tempted to use car features like speed-maintaining cruise control, Leuchter recommends avoiding cruise control systems since the frequency of stops may increase in wintry conditions. Instead, manually control your car's position so that there's more distance — at least three car lengths — between your vehicle and the car in front of you. Also avoid quick acceleration, aggressive steering and sudden braking, Leuchter says.

Fill up the gas tank and other car essentials

travel outfit ideas for winter

It's important to stay fueled and charged since bad weather can cause unexpected delays, Johansson says. She recommends keeping your gas tank at least half full and your cellphone charged whenever you head out in your car in winter. Additionally, you'll want to check that your windshield washer fluid is filled with an antifreeze solution to protect your visibility on the road.

Know what to do if you start to skid

If you've ever driven in icy weather, you've probably experienced the stomach churning that accompanies the sensation of your tires connecting with an icy road. While hitting a patch of ice and consequently skidding can cause nerves, it's important to stay calm and resist the urge to slam on the brakes, according to AAA. Instead, decide where you want the car to go and steer in that direction.

Dig out and stay warm while you wait for help

Should you find yourself stuck in snow or ice and waiting for help, clear the snow from the base of your vehicle, especially around the exhaust pipe, Johansson says. Then, intermittently run the vehicle to keep the interior warm. Don't forget to open a window about two inches to bring in fresh air.

13 Easy Outfit Ideas That Will Help You Fall Back in Love With Your Clothes

At the start of any season or moment of change, it's hard to feel enthused about the items hanging in your wardrobe . At least, that's the case for me. By this point, I'll have fallen into the pattern of wearing the same pieces over and over again. A sort of jeans -and-neutral jumper Groundhog Day -type scenario. I work remotely, too, which doesn't necessarily encourage being creative with my outfits. However, in 2024, I've made a promise to myself to shake things up again in the outfit department. So, I set out to find some chic outfit ideas to inspire me, and what do you know? It didn't take me long to source some easy solutions to my current style dilemma.

Below are a selection of elevated-looking outfit ideas for autumn 2024 that will help anyone looking to give their style a shakeup this season. The best part is, these are pieces you may already have lurking in your wardrobe but haven't thought about pairing together. At least for a while anyway. Scroll on for 13 chic outfit ideas to try this autumn.

OUTFIT IDEAS TO TRY FOR AUTUMN 2024:

1. jumper + midi skirt.

@melissareannejohnson wearing an a-line midi skirt and jumper

Style Notes: Nothing says "autumn" more than a chic jumper and skirt combo. For 2024, I'll be taking a cue from Melissa and opting for charcoal greys and warm browns as a slightly softer alternative to black.

Shop the Look:

Alpaca-Wool Blend Jumper - Dark Grey - Arket Gb

Arket makes the cosiest jumpers for autumn.

The Boyfriend: Fine Poplin, White

I love the look of a tailored shirt under a soft knit.

Maxi A-Line Skirt

This soft brown is a great alternative to black.

SAINT LAURENT, Manhattan small croc-effect patent-leather shoulder bag

This is at the top of my autumn wishlist.

Sleek Heeled Knee-High Boot

2. NEUTRAL ON NEUTRAL

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673399828-image

Style Notes: If you haven't yet heard of the term "latte dressing", you're about to start seeing it all over the place. As seen on the runways, full-neutral looks took a lighter turn this season, with models wearing shades that resemble that of your latte top-to-toe. Combine cooler greys with warmer biscuit tones to add a high-end but effortless finish.

Vince + Weekend Cashmere Jumper

V-necks will always make an outfit look more grown-up.

Thomas Sabo + Cord Chain

This comes in 4 different metals and 3 different lengths.

Celine + Triomphe Belt in Taurillon Leather

The logo is instantly recognisable.

Mason Pant Es

You'll wear these all year round.

3. LONG COAT, SHORT DRESS

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702675368341-main

Style Notes: It's one of the oldest and actually relevant fashion rules in the book. Wearing a short dress? Contrast with a long coat for a chic pairing. The same logic applies the other way around.

Toteme + Signature Wool Cashmere Coat Black

The panelling on this knit dress is so elevated.

Buckle Leather Belt - Black - Arket Gb

Add a cool belt to cinch in the waist.

GANNI, Black Feminine Buckle Loafers

The buckles on these loafers add an interesting twist.

4. STRIPE KNIT + WIDE-LEG TROUSERS

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673404816-image

Style Notes: Is there anything more classic than a striped jumper? I'll wait. Indeed, your gut reaction might be to style it with blue jeans. For a simple switch that makes all the difference, follow Lois Sterling's lead with a pair of wide-leg trousers in cream or white.

Striped Wool-Blend Turtleneck Sweater

My dream autumn knit.

River Island, Plus Cream Wide Leg Stripe Trousers

The subtle stripes will look so cool contrasted with the bold stripe jumper.

Park Tote Three Bag in Leather

Throw in everything and go!

5. A RICH PALETTE

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673405583-image

Style Notes: One of my favourite things about this time of year is the palette of rich, earthy hues. Take Lydia Tsegay's olive coat, brown bag and navy trouser look; because they all bear the same sort of tone, these three colours work harmoniously together. So, when you're next tempted to incorporate some black into your outfit, pause, and think of this gorgeous outfit.

Pebble Coat in Wool Blend

Such a pretty green.

The Midi New York | Mocha Suede & Mocha Smooth | Demellier

Suede will never date.

Alpaca Loca, Slim Scarf/shawl Beige Alpaca Wool

For those extra chilly days.

Marks & Spencer + Slim Fit Ankle Grazer Trousers With Stretch

Perfect for the office as well as casual days out.

6. WHITE BLOUSE + KNIT + JEANS

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673406157-image

Style Notes: The white shirt is another item you may intuitively pair with jeans, and for good reason. The pairing is so chic yet effortless, I'd go as far as to say it's the unofficial fashion-editor uniform.

Batwing-Sleeved Muslin Blouse

The sleeves give this blouse such a romantic feel.

UNIQLO, Soufflé Yarn Knit Blouson

Uniqlo is my go-to for affordable knitwear.

Cloud Low Loose Jeans - Blue - Arket Gb

The perfect slouchy fit.

7. DOUBLE DENIM + TRAINERS

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673401004-image

Style Notes: The double denim trend is still going strong in 2024, which is great news for anyone who invested in high-quality denim last year. Which will be all of you then! All denim shirts and jeans can be worn separately but, instead, wear the together and you'll change the entire vibe.

Myles Denim Pocket Utility Jacket

I almost always opt for darker denim washes.

Aiden Roll Neck Top: Organic Cotton Knit - Black

For extra layering.

Fiore Box Pleat Jean

These have such a retro feel to them.

H&M, Trainers

Don't these look way more expensive?

Faux Leather Top Handle Tote Bag

This will work hard in your autumn wardrobe.

8. ALL BLACK + BURGUNDY BAG

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673401617-image

Style Notes: If you live in an all-black palette (I know many of us do) but it's starting to lose its appeal, you don't need to go on a huge haul to make your wardrobe feel fresh. A burgundy bag can do great things for your style and, by proxy, your confidence. Let's not underestimate the power feeling good in your clothes can have on your wellbeing.

Massimo Dutti, Nappa leather jacket with pockets

The perfect cropped lenght for high waisted shorts or trousers.

Longline Wool-Blend Twill Shorts

A longer short is so elegant.

sezane, Paula Babies

The perfect all-day height.

Shopper Bag With Buckle

Burgundy will be everywhere this autumn.

9. LEATHER JACKET + MONOCHROME OUTFIT

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673402987-image

Style Notes: When I want to look and feel cooler in my clothes, I add a leather jacket. I know, so cliché of me but it works and, if I look half as stylish as Abi Marvel does here in the process, I'm a happy, happy lady. I'm also shamelessly stealing her idea of wearing an all-green outfit underneath. See what I mean about earthy hues always looking chic? I rest my case.

Whistles + Clean Bonded Leather Jacket

Whistles has some of the best leather on the high street.

Ribbed Modal-Blend Top

This sage green will go with all of the neutrals in your wardrobe.

Asos Design Curve Utility Trouser in Washed Khaki

Dress these down with trainers or up with slingback heels.

Soft Bow Slingback Pumps - Black - Arket Gb

The bows are so cute!

10. SOFT FABRICS

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673403578-image

Style Notes: It's not just colour pairings you ought to consider—switching up fabrics you'd ordinarily wear together will also give you a pep in your step. Me? I've not been able to stop thinking about Olivia Faeh's cashmere-knit-and-silk-trouser pairing since I screenshotted it last week. For lack of a better word: Sublime.

Katie Cashmere Roll Neck

This looks so soft.

Arket + Silk Trousers

Silk trousers will make any outfit look more expensive.

NEW LOOK, Burgundy Contrast Toe Cap Ballerina Pumps

I love the contrast between the black and the burgundy.

11. SLEEVELESS KNIT + MINISKIRT

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673402118-image

Style Notes: You've got a miniskirt (I assume). You've got a knitted vest (I also assume!). But, have you worn them together? Chances are, yes, but maybe not for a while. The pairing hadn't occurred to me until I saw Liv's chic look, which she styled with classic black knee boots.

Lyra Top

Perfect for the transitional weather.

URBAN OUTFITTERS, Cleo Pleated Mini Skirt

Just add skin-toned tights when the temperature drops.

Leather Riding Boots

I can't believe these are from the high street.

VICTORIA BECKHAM, Leather Jacket

You'll reach for this constantly.

12. SHORT JACKET + TAILORED TROUSERS

@isabellecoheen wearing a short jacket and tailored trousers

Style Notes: If you're looking for an easy, everyday throw-on that still looks stylish, you can't go wrong with a classic short jacket and tailored trousers combo. You can then elevate the look with items that are slightly more trend-led such as a croc shoulder bag and pearl choker.

Regular Fit Cotton Jacket

Simple, but so stylish.

Curve Love A&f Sloane Tailored Pant

You cannot go wrong with a classic black trouser.

Astrid & Miyu, Serenity Pearl Beaded Necklace in Gold

Layer this with your gold chain necklaces.

Eva Shoulder Bag - Dark Green Croc

This dark green shade is so versatile.

13. CREAM COAT + METALLIC ACCESSORIES

outfit-ideas-2024-311309-1702673406977-image

Style Notes: Okay, so the coat colour isn't integral to the scenario but can we just have a moment for this cream and gold pairing? My main point being, you might be sick of wearing cumbersome coats already, but a way to make them feel fresh and shiny (literally) is with a metallic bag or, if you're so inclined, a boot.

H&M + Pile Coat

This will keep you warm all winter.

Anthropolgie , Melie Bianco Larissa Woven Faux-Leather Shoulder Bag

Anthropologie's viral bag now comes in gold!

Savi Dome Mini Hoop Earrings

These look way pricier than £95.

Aside from requiring a lot more gear, traveling with kids can be quite stressful, and in between packing your luggage and investing in a travel stroller , there's little mental energy for anything else. Fortunately, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Parenting Lab have been testing car seats for decades, including the best convertible car seats , rotating car seats and the best booster seats . We test based on safety features, functionality, ease of use and value. Our picks are based on tests done in-Lab by our experts, evaluations from our consumer testers and extensive research.

Head to the end of this guide to find more information on how we test, whether or not you should use a car seat on a plane, what to look for when shopping for the best portable car seats and more. Looking for more to make traveling with kids as easy as possible? Check out our favorite outdoor-ready stroller wagons , the best lightweight strollers and top-rated double strollers .

The Doona car seat is our pick for the best overall car seat and stroller combo and it's one of our past Parenting Award winners. A dedicated fan following backs it up; see its more than 13,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. The Doona makes it easy to switch between car seat and stroller mode in seconds even with your baby strapped inside. In short, you don't need a separate infant car seat and a stroller, because this is both.

"It's the easiest stroller to maneuver through airport security and around an airport terminal," says one tester who's a mom of two young kids. It goes into a rideshare vehicle using the seat belt (no stroller to put in the trunk!). It's also FAA-approved for use in an airplane cabin and fits on most economy airplane seats, which are often about 17 inches wide.

Rachel Rothman , the Good Housekeeping Institute's former Chief Technologist and a mom of three, is a fan of this for travel. But it's important to note that, as well as being pricey, the Doona is only for rear-facing use and for toddlers up to 35 pounds. Toddlers outgrow it typically at age 2. But if you'll travel a lot in those first two years — even if it's just catching Ubers around town — you'll be grateful for the Doona.

Big kids need a bit of help ensuring that the seatbelt is hitting their body just right, so this backless booster gives them that extra height. It's also exceptionally small, lightweight and easy to travel with; you might even keep several in your car's trunk for when you're carpooling other kids.

Because it's backless, it doesn't offer as much support as a highback booster (for that, see the Peg Perego on this list). It is okayed for ages 4 and up as long as they weigh at least 40 pounds and could be great for a quick trip when you don't want to lug something large. This fits into a tote bag!

With its two hideaway cupholders, machine-washable seat cushions and padded armrests, this tucks a lot of features into a (really!) affordable seat. It's no surprise that it has more than 22,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. While it isn't airline-approved — all booster seats require a shoulder belt, which you won't find on an airplane — its compact size makes it incredibly simple to slide into your overhead bin to later use in taxis, Ubers or other vehicles once you get to your destination.

For a little more money there's a TurboBooster LX version that works with LATCH; nice if you'll be keeping this in one car for a length of time.

Got enough to carry already? At 10 pounds, this is the best lightweight convertible car seat for traveling and it won't break the bank. Five harness heights and three buckle locations help customize the seat to your baby or toddler's size, though it's the kind of harness you have to rethread each time you need to change it.

The Scenera can be installed rear-facing for babies and toddlers and forward-facing for preschoolers up to 40 pounds but lacks the cushioning and other comforts, like a recline mechanism, we've come to enjoy in an everyday toddler car seat . Still, with its deep bucket seat, this will keep your tiny passenger comfy enough and car seat compliant when you're traveling and in and out of other people's vehicles. It's especially great as a rear-facing travel option for 2- and 3-year-olds who have outgrown an infant car seat.

You can remove both the cupholder and seat pad for washing. The seat pad can even go in the dryer. The brand claims that three of these seats fit across a back seat and our tests were able to validate that in certain vehicles. It can be installed with the LATCH system or a seatbelt. It's approved for airplane seats and like our best overall pick it fits on most economy seats.

Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120

Viaggio Flex 120

Kids who are at least age 4 and who weigh 40 pounds or more will appreciate the comfort of this belt-positioning booster seat just as much as parents will appreciate its ability to fold down to a fraction of its size.

The Flex 120 has an exceptionally large weight range, functioning for kids up to — you guessed it — 120 pounds. While it's a bit pricier than some other booster options, its ability to compact down makes it perfect for folding up and storing in a bag that you can then gate-check, or even fit into the overhead bin while in-flight. Note that no belt-positioning booster is certified for use in an airplane cabin because they're meant to be used with a car's shoulder belt, not an airplane lap belt. The big kids who fit this are good to use the airplane belt anyway! This is perfect for use in a rideshare, taxi or a far-off relative's vehicle when you land.

Customize this booster to your child by adjusting the headrest, upper backrest, side wings and seat. In addition to being an easy portable car seat, this is another great choice for grandparents or other caregivers who only occasionally drive big kids around because it so easily fits into a car's trunk when not in use.

Graco 4Ever DLX

4Ever DLX

This is larger and heavier than any of our other choices. However, this is the most portable all-in-one car seat that grows with your little one from a rear-facing infant car seat to a backless booster, from 4 to 120 pounds .

Its versatility means that it may be the only car seat you ever have to buy, and if you travel infrequently, you could manage to tote this on a few trips and avoid buying something separate just for travel. It is certified to work on an airplane seat with the harness (so, up to 65 pounds), but it's about 3 inches wider than many economy airplane seats so the fit isn't great; one Reddit user said they put it in the window seat and then just accepted squeezing themselves into the middle-seat position.

While testing, we appreciated how easy this car seat was to install and use, making it pretty difficult to mess up due to user error. We also love how highly adjustable it is, with a six-position recline and a no-rethread harness with 10 possible heights. The easy-to-remove washable seat pads make it simple to clean up after your little one. If you're taking it with you into a rideshare and can't use the LATCH installation system, there's an integrated belt lock off on the back of the seat that helps make seat belt installation as simple as possible.

WAYB Pico Travel Car Seat

Pico Travel Car Seat

This is a pricey option that has a fan following with frequent travelers who travel with a preschooler. It folds down into its own carrying case, which can be worn as a backpack, so you can easily get it through the airport and store it in a hotel. It's got a five-point harness and is meant for kids up to 50 pounds. The brand says it's for kids as young as 2 but because rear-facing is safest and this only faces forward, we would not recommend using it for a child until they are at least age 3, preferably 4.

The Pico does not have side-impact protection and other safety features we want on an everyday car seat, but for travel we agree that this has portability appeal. It also gets knocked in reviews for not being comfortable for long car rides if your child likes to nap, but again, we're putting it on this list for on-the-go families who are in "something is better than nothing" mode, even for short train, bus or van rides.

Our experts appreciate how lightweight this seat is (8 pounds), and that it easily fits even on the smallest economy airplane seat (it's FAA-approved). The seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or the seatbelt in a car or airplane.

Nuna PIPA urbn + TRVL Stroller

PIPA urbn + TRVL Stroller

If you're a city family that doesn't even own a car, there's a big reason to love the PIPA portable infant car seat: It's built to be installed without a base and is exceptionally easy to move between vehicles, including rideshares like Uber.

It's got a built-in rigid LATCH system or alternatively you can use the back seat seatbelt. Plus, the PIPA urbn only weighs 7 pounds, making it one of the lightest infant car seats we know of and an easy one to carry from place to place. The stroller, too, is lightweight at just under 14 pounds and can be folded down using just one hand. The car seat is built to ride on top of the stroller, to get them both through an airport, and we named it our favorite lightweight travel system .

The infant car seat does not have a high weight limit, however. Your baby will outgrow it when they hit 22 pounds or are 29 inches tall, whichever comes first. For some that can mean by their first birthday. But the stroller will stay useful through the preschool years since it has a weight limit of 50 pounds. The car seat is airline-approved and will fit on most economy cabin seats.

How we test the best portable car seats

line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute's engineering and parenting pros have reviewed dozens of car seats over the past five years, including portable car seats . Our Lab experts work with parents to test these car seats on a variety of vehicles of different brands and sizes to ensure that you can find the right car seat for your family.

Each car seat we consider has passed Federal Safety Standards. We perform tests both in the Lab and at home to evaluate each product's safety, ease of installation, stability, ease of adjustments, stroller compatibility and portability. To accomplish this, we set up each car seat in a variety of vehicles and strollers. We evaluate how easy it is to secure the harness as well as how difficult it is to install the car seats. For portable car seats we pay special attention to whether they can be installed without a LATCH system and if they are approved for use in an airplane cabin.

What to look for when shopping for a portable car seat

linebreak

Whether you're going on a trip or often take your child places in a rideshare vehicle, if you need a portable car seat you should consider these things:

✔️ Height and weight limits : All car seats come with minimum and maximum height and weight specifications. To ensure proper seatbelt placement and optimal security, make sure your child fits within those ranges. Once they meet the maximum in either height or weight, it's time to switch. If you have an adjustable car seat that transitions to a booster look at the labels on the car seat, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer so you know when it's time to switch modes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you determine the right kind of car seat for your child based on their age, weight and height. That will help you figure out if you can use an infant car seat or if you need a convertible car seat and if you're ready to move on to a booster car seat for travel.

✔️ Weight : The lightest car seats are often the most portable. We get especially excited when we find any that are less than 15 pounds, though a few on our list are heavier than that.

✔️ Easy cleaning : Regardless of age, spills happen. Luckily, like many other car seats, most portable seats offer removable machine-washable seat covers and padding.

✔️ Design : Traditional car seats have a ton of padding, robust side-impact protection and extra features that are important for every day but might be overkill for short trips. The best design for a portable car seat is a slim, streamlined one.

✔️ Ease of installation : Since you will be re-installing the car seat each time you put it in a new car or aircraft, it's important to find a car seat that is so easy to install it won't take more than a few minutes. The easiest car seats for traveling can be installed without a car seat base.

✔️ State laws : Before you bring your car seat across state lines, check state laws to be sure you'll be compliant. Often children through age 7 must be in a child-restraint seat. But if you're heading to Florida for Disney World, the laws there only apply to children through age 5.

Should you bring a car seat on the plane?

linebreak

While it is not mandatory to strap your little one into a car seat on an airplane, many parents opt to do so since it can be both a safer and more comfortable for everyone . It's recommended to do so for children under age 2 by the FAA and AAP. Note: For your child to ride in a car seat, you'll need to buy them their own plane ticket so they're guaranteed to have the space. If your baby under age 2 is flying as a free "lap baby" you are not guaranteed space for your car seat.

Before you bring a car seat onboard, check that it has an FAA-approved sticker. It's also a good idea to bring along your car seat manual to help ensure that you're properly installing the seat on the aircraft. There are helpful videos on YouTube, too, that show how to buckle a car seat in with a lap belt. (This one from the FAA shows how to install a forward-facing car seat on a plane .) Watch some before your trip!

The average airline seat is about 17 inches wide and measures 30 inches from the back of the seat to the seat in front of you — but size can vary depending on which airline you are flying. Because of this, it's best to pick a narrow, compact car seat. Infant car seats fit better than most convertible car seats, though we find that the Cosco choice on our list generally fits well.

For those who are traveling with a car seat who don't plan to use it while on the plane, many airlines will check the car seat or booster seat for free at the check-in desk or at the gate. It might be a good idea to purchase a travel bag to fit it in, to help avoid damage.

travel outfit ideas for winter

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

As a travel writer and frequent traveler, I’m a huge fan of a matching set —  it’s convenient, effortless, and acts like a mini capsule wardrobe to serve tons of functions on travel days and at my destination. And as someone who always seems to get cold on planes — in any season — I’m always looking for warm and cozy two-piece sets to keep me warm on travel days, even if I’m winging off to somewhere tropical.

Fortunately, Amazon offers a ton of winter travel outfits that come as matching sets, so there’s no thinking required. And, they're a great value since you get two pieces for the price of one. Plus, you can mix and match them with whatever else is in your suitcase for endless outfit possibilities. My favorites are all under $55, and ship fast with Amazon Prime if you're looking to get them ASAP for your next trip (or maybe for some last-minute holiday shopping).

Prettygarden Women's Turtleneck and Pants Set

This matching set comes with a turtleneck top for extra warmth in the winter, plus a pair of super-comfortable elastic-waist pants with a decidedly cool feature: an adjustable velcro hem lets you customize the width just how you like it for style, comfort, and ease of wear. I’d style the set together for comfy travel days, then pair the turtleneck with jeans or even a skirt and tights for a more pulled-together look at my destination. Even better: it’s on sale right now for 20 percent off.

Etcyy Women's Knitted Sweatsuit

I love the striped detailing on this two-piece set: It’s giving Parisian vibes and I’m here for this timeless travel look. The set comes with a knit top and wide-leg pants that have a subtle flare at the hem. I’d wear this on the plane with sneakers, out and about for city sightseeing — and even to a work meeting at my destination, paired with dressier shoes or boots. It's so versatile, and it's on sale starting at $39.

Caracilia Women's Sweater Set

If a set works for me, I tend to buy it in multiple colors so that I have options. I can see that happening with this cozy sweater set, which is available in 18 hues. I love the slouchy fit of the wide-leg pants and oversized turtleneck sweater for comfortable travel days. The subtle-yet-elegant button detailing on the sleeves elevates the look, so the sweater would also be great for a cozy evening out paired with dressier trousers. The duo has earned rave reviews from Amazon shoppers. One wrote , "The bottoms paired perfectly with a tank top, and when the temperature dropped, the sweater kept me comfortably warm."

Ekouaer Women's 3-Piece Knit Lounge Set

As someone who writes at home in my pajamas when I’m not on the road, I have high expectations for comfort; if it doesn’t wear like pajamas, I’d rather pass. This three-piece set available in 20 colors is so pajama- esque ; it’s perfect for sleeping but also works great for travel-day layering. The stretchy, ribbed-knit set includes a long-sleeve, open-front cardigan, a tank top with drawstrings at both sides so you can adjust it for length and style, and flowy elastic-waist pants.

Casly Women's Half-Zip Sweatshirt and Wide-Leg Pants Set

I love a sweatsuit for travel comfort — but I love it even more when that sweatsuit has a polished silhouette that makes it even more versatile for dressing up a bit, especially when I wear the pieces separately. This Casly one includes a half-zip sweatshirt with ribbed cuffs, a V-neck, drop shoulders, and — my favorite — thumbholes. When paired with the high-waisted, wide-leg sweatpants, it looks more sophisticated than typical styles.

Weerti Women's Thermal Underwear Set

Thermal underwear is perfect to wear on winter travel days because it’s lightweight, cozy, flexible, and easy to layer. I’d wear this on the plane, as base layers at a cold-weather destination, and even as warm pajamas in drafty accommodations. This popular, buttery soft set has close to 10,000 reviews and it's currently marked down to $27.

Hooever Women's Fuzzy Shearling Fleece Set

This ultra-cozy set should come with a warning for comfort-obsessed travelers like me: You may never take it off. Equally soft inside and out, it’s made of plush, shearling fleece and features a lapel collar top and elastic-waist bottoms — with two pockets, key for stashing your essentials on travel days or keeping your remote and smartphone handy when lounging on the couch.

Anrabess Women's Crewneck Sweater and Wide-Leg Pants Set

Because the top in this set is sleeveless, it’s perfect for layering; I’d wear it under a cardigan or wrap the plane for warmth, and then I’d swap out the top layer for a blazer to dress it up at my destination. You can even wear it on top of a lightweight long-sleeve shirt or collared button-up for additional styling options. The pull-on pants have a comfy elastic waistband and wide-leg silhouette, but the vertical seams dress up the look plenty. In fact, one reviewer dubbed the set “expensive-looking and classy."

Viottiset Women's V-Neck Sweater Lounge Set

This oversized, V-neck ribbed knit sweater lounge set is so easy to wear, hence why it's an Amazon best-seller . On top, you get a sweater with stylish drop shoulders and batwing sleeves, and on the bottom: high-waisted pants with cozy flared hems. Choose between 24 different colors, each of which are perfect for the cold-weather months, and make sure to add it to your cart while it's 31 percent off.

Felina Women's Jersey Top and Joggers Set

I love how lightweight this matching jersey set is; it's ideal for un-bulky layering if you're headed somewhere chilly and the pieces can easily be paired with your favorite travel clothes to create cozy variety. The long-sleeve crewneck top has dropped shoulders and a longer-line hem, while the joggers have a drawstring waistband and relaxed fit. They’re super soft, super versatile, and moisture-wicking. One enthusiastic Amazon customer called them “perfect for airplane travel,” adding that the two can be easily layered with a scarf for additional warmth and coverage.

Urbex Men's Tracksuit

"Airport dad" is the latest style trend sweeping the travel world  — and I’m completely here for it, because airport moms have plenty of their own logistics and gear to manage. I’d give this hooded sweatsuit set to my husband — my forever partner in hustling the family through planes, trains, and automobiles — because it’s highly revered for its warmth and comfort, plus it had tons of zippered pockets for carrying essentials on travel days.

Coofandy Men's Sweatsuit

I love a full-zip hoodie; it’s so much easier to wear than a pullover and easier to put on and take off in a cramped airplane cabin. This set has a full-zip closure sweatshirt, plus drawstring-waisted sweatpants with strategically slanted pockets to ensure that nothing falls out while you're on the move. Available in sizes ranging from S to 4XL and 16 colors, it's a top-selling combo among Amazon shoppers; more than 2,000 reviewers gave it a five-star rating and noted that it’s “ very comfortable ” with a just-right fit.
