About Tokyo

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) is the nation’s capital, the site of the 2020 Summer Olympics and the most populous city in the world – there’s no shortage of places to see and things to do in Tokyo. While that means you’ll inevitably have to leave some things off your itinerary, it also means that there’s something for everyone.

Tokyo’s center, the 23 wards, combine some of the world’s busiest areas with remnants of old Japan; not far from Shibuya is the holy Meiji Jingu , while the 634-meter tall Tokyo Skytree and the iconic Senso-ji in Asakusa are within walking distance of each other. Shinjuku and Roppongi are two vibrant nightlife spots, yet they’re a short train ride away from Ueno Zoo and the Tsukiji Fish Market .

Right in the middle of it all is the Imperial Palace , a popular jogging route. Beautiful nature in the Okutama area and the Izu and Ogasawara Islands will make you forget that you’re still in Tokyo.

There’s no need to tip in Japan. Here’s what else travelers should know.

Portrait of Eve Chen

The Land of the Rising Sun has fascinated travelers for centuries, and this summer is no exception.

Tokyo is among the top five international cities Americans are visiting this summer, according to Expedia and now Google Flights. And with the exchange rate currently so strongly in Americans’ favor, it’s an especially good time to visit if you can take the hot and humid weather .

Before you book your flight, though, there are some things you should know. From cultural customs to customs and immigration, here are 10 things to do when visiting Japan.

1. Learn basic Japanese

Some people, particularly in Tokyo, may speak English, but it’s best to learn a few basic phrases in Japanese like “hello,” “excuse me,” “where is the restroom?” and “thank you.” Free tutorials are available across social media and language apps like Duolingo or Babbel.

You’ll also want to download a free translation app like Google Translate that can handle both verbal and written translation.

2. Fill out the Visit Japan Web form

U.S. citizens don’t need a visa to visit Japan for stays under 90 days, but you will need to fill out a Visit Japan Web immigration and customs form . Save time by doing this in advance online instead of at the airport when you arrive.

What to know about Tokyo Disney Resort: Why Disney fans will travel all the way to Japan for its theme parks

3. Get a transit card

A prepaid Suica or PASMO transit card isn’t just for public transportation. It also can be used to pay for things at vending machines, convenience stores and some shops.

You can download a digital version through Apple Wallet or get a physical card once you arrive in Japan. Just keep it loaded with as much money as you want to spend.

4. Keep cash on hand

Cash is still king in some places, including food stalls and small shops that may not accept credit cards or digital payments.

You can withdraw cash for low fees and fair exchange rates from ATMs at Japanese convenience stores like 7-Eleven. A Suica or PASMO card can tide you over until you can get to an ATM.

5. Skip the tip

There’s no tipping culture in Japan. In fact, some servers have been known to follow customers out and return tips like they were accidentally left behind. Instead of tipping at restaurants, offer thanks.

Before eating, it’s customary to say “ itadakimasu ” like a quick prayer to show appreciation for the food and those who grew it. When you leave, you can say “ gochisousama deshita ” to staff to show gratitude for the meal.

6. Stand aside on escalators

In Tokyo, people stand to the left of escalators and keep the right side open for others walking up or down the moving steps. In Kyoto, like in most U.S. cities, people stand on the right. Don’t worry about trying to remember which side to stand on. It will be immediately clear once you’re there. Just do what everyone else is doing and don’t block foot traffic.

7. Keep the noise down on trains

It’s considered rude to talk on your cellphone or play music or videos out loud on subways and trains. You may hear some small groups of friends chatting, but many commuters keep quietly to themselves.

8. Wear or carry socks

Some places, like temples or restaurants with tatami mats, may require you to remove your shoes. If you’re not wearing socks, you may want to carry a clean pair with you, just in case.

9. Prepare to bare all at onsens

If you’re not comfortable sporting your birthday suit around others, you may want to skip public hot springs. Swimsuits and other garments aren’t allowed in the communal water. Some onsens may also bar tattoos or ask guests to cover them up with a patch. However, there are some tattoo-friendly onsens as well as private onsens available.

Additionally, it’s customary to shower before entering the springs to keep the water clean.

10. You’ll have to wait to open some souvenirs

If you plan to load up on Japanese beauty products, snacks and other consumables to take home, you can buy them tax-free at stores like Don Quixote, but they’ll be sealed in a bag indicating they were purchased without paying tax. You can’t open the bag until you leave Japan.

Bonus: Eat all the things, including at convenience stores or vending machines

From egg salad sandwiches to fresh onigiri rice balls, there’s so much good, affordable food in Japan. Don’t miss the delicious and cheap treats at Japanese convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Lawson and Family Mart. The same goes for the wide variety of readily available vending machines selling cold and hot drinks, depending on the season.

Rakuten, Jalan, Yahoo!... Which Travel Booking Site Offers the Best Deals?

TOKYO , Feb 21 ( News On Japan ) - With the classification of COVID-19 downgraded to Category 5, many families are considering travel during the first spring break since the change. However, due to rising prices and the influx of travelers, accommodation costs within Japan have also surged.

yahoo travel japan english

In Tokyo, some lodging prices have skyrocketed compared to pre-pandemic levels, making it difficult for people to stay, as seen in comments on social media. We spoke to an active hotelier, Mr. Higemaru (@higemaru_hotelman), who delivers great travel deals on social media.

How to Find Great Deals on Accommodations Like a Travel Pro

With so many travel booking sites available, it can be overwhelming to choose one, so Higemaru shares some tips on what to look out for on each site.

[Rakuten Travel] "Rakuten Travel is a reservation site that aims for overall savings through coupons and point returns for entries. Coupons and entries may apply to some accommodations but not others, and if you match them correctly, you can book at a significant discount. The site focuses on luxury and hot spring inns, and recently there has been a trend of holding different large sales every month. To grasp the information properly, it is recommended to check on the web version rather than the app."

[Jalan] "Jalan has a powerful combination of coupons that can be used at almost all facilities and coupons that can be used in specific municipalities. They regularly hold big sales, and there are plenty of coupons and Jalan-exclusive points for heavy users."

[Yahoo! Travel] "This is a site you can't miss. They have a campaign where you get 10% of your accommodation fee back in PayPay when you book with an online card payment. There's no cap on PayPay returns, so stays for extended periods, large families, or at luxury inns can be quite economical. Yahoo! Travel is not as complicated as Rakuten Travel or Jalan, and it's often the cheapest, so it's highly recommended for those not accustomed to booking."

Higemaru also didn't miss the chance to highlight "Jalan Play & Experience Booking." "You can arrange activities and tickets, but you can also book 'hotel lunches.' There are coupons available for specific municipalities, and recently a follower reported, 'I was able to go strawberry picking for free using a coupon and Jalan-exclusive points!'"

Additionally, for those interested in package deals with bullet trains, there's [Nippon Travel Agency & JR Tokai Tours], and for airfare sales, [JAL and ANA] are quite economical. For trips on Saturdays and long weekends, the travel subscription service [HafH] can be a good choice.

Booking Rooms and Planning for 'Three-Generation Travel'

When traveling with parents or relatives, many people struggle with booking rooms and planning activities. "If it's okay to have bedrooms together, consider staying in a family room. If you prefer separate bedrooms, book two rooms. Since it's a three-generation trip, the way you spend time during the stay will also change, so hotels where you can do everything on-site are good," Higemaru suggests, offering his perspective as an active hotelier. He introduced two accommodations:

- Yatsugatake Hotel Fuuka (Yamanashi Prefecture) "With a variety of activities and hot springs, they offer a wide range of rooms, from Japanese-style to Japanese-Western and family rooms, suitable for any generation."

- Andarizort Izu-Kogen (Shizuoka Prefecture) "Facilities including a drink corner, private family baths, and karaoke rooms are free to use, excluding esthetics. Surprise arrangements are also free, and you can request a celebration cake with a message. Dinner and late-night snacks come with all-you-can-drink options. The extensive on-site facilities mean your stay won't be affected by the weather."

Using 'Hometown Tax Donations' Smartly for Travel

With the 'hometown tax donation' system, you can support the region you want to help with a minimum personal expense of 2,000 yen and receive a thank-you gift. There are also travel experiences as rewards.

"The hometown tax donations on Rakuten Travel are quite economical. In 2023, there were over 20,000 facilities available, so you won't have trouble choosing a place to stay. Additionally, for Rakuten users, you can use and accumulate Rakuten points, which is a nice touch," he said. Booking during Rakuten Market sales can also increase your points, which is another benefit.

Tokyo Bay Turns Pale Blue

Tokyo Bay's waters have taken on a pale blue hue due to a phenomenon known as 'blue tide.' Japan cancels flights and trains as another typhoon approaches

Hundreds of Japanese flights and trains were cancelled Thursday in the middle of a major holiday week as another typhoon roared towards the archipelago.

Days after Tropical Storm Maria dumped record rains, Typhoon Ampil was set late Thursday to skirt the Tokyo region -- home to almost 40 million people -- and then churn up the Pacific coast on Friday and Saturday.

ANA cancelled some 280 domestic flights due on Friday affecting more than 60,000 passengers, while Japan Airlines scrapped 191 domestic and 26 international services, hitting 38,600 customers.

Major parts of Japan's network of bullet train services are also scheduled to be cancelled on Friday -- including the busy section between Tokyo and the central city of Nagoya.

Ampil -- and Maria before it -- comes as Japan marks the "obon" holiday week when millions return to their hometowns.

At 9:00 am (0000 GMT), Ampil was 300 kilometres (190 miles) off the remote Pacific island of Chichijima, packing gusts up to 180 kilometres per hour.

Categorised as "strong", Ampil -- which means tamarind in Cambodia's Khmer language -- was forecast to head back out into the Pacific on Saturday and Sunday.

"We urge the public to stay informed about evacuation advisories and take early steps to seek safety," Disaster Management Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura told a regular briefing.

The weather agency warned residents of eastern regions of possible violent gusts, flooding, overflowing rivers and landslides.

Japan regularly experiences major typhoons which can cause fatal landslides.

Typhoons in the region are forming closer to coastlines, intensifying more rapidly and lasting longer over land due to climate change, according to a study released last month.

Researchers from universities in Singapore and the United States analysed more than 64,000 modelled historic and future storms from the 19th century through the end of the 21st century to come up with the findings.

Neon lights and all-night karaoke. Tranquil temples and bowing geisha. Steaming hot springs and soaring Mount Fuji. Japan is brimming with evocative moments, and delicious contrasts. Where else can you spend the morning shopping in a skyscraper and the afternoon chilling in the forest with snow monkeys?

The question, for most visitors, isn’t why go – but how to put it all together. The good news is that it’s easier than you may think. From excellent transport links (the bullet train is world famous) to cheap dining and plenty of English-language signage, Japan is very user friendly. It’s clean, safe and suitable for everyone from solo travellers to young families. And, despite a pricey reputation, it’s doable on a budget.

Travel restrictions and entry requirements

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Japan has been slow to open its borders. While tourists may now enter the country, changes to entry requirements are still ongoing depending on your reason for visiting, vaccination status and recent travel history. Before booking a trip check gov.uk for the latest details.

While most Covid-related restrictions have been eased within Japan, in practice social distancing and mask-wearing is still commonplace. Visitors should take their steer from locals. If you have even the slightest sniffle – whether it’s a cold or hay fever – it is considered polite to mask up.

Best time to go

Japan is a proper all-seasons destination. Traversing 25 degrees of latitude – from northerly Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa – it has diverse climates and landscapes, so the best time to visit depends on what you plan to do.

Generally speaking, summers are warm and humid (with typhoons in August and September), and winters mild. Some areas, including the Alps, see substantial amounts of winter snow. Spring is famous for its country-wide explosion of cherry blossom, but prices can be high and bloom dates variable. October and November’s autumn leaf colour is equally dazzling, longer and a bit quieter. If you’re strapped for cash, the cheapest time to visit much of the country is mid-January to early March.

Top regions and cities

Most visits begin in Japan’s capital city, Tokyo, and so they should – this neon-drenched, swallow-you-whole metropolis contains all the frenetic energy you’re expecting from urban Japan. Hop from 24/7 karaoke bars in Shinjuku to epic shopping in Shibuya or Ginza, and quirky gaming arcades in Akihabara. Feast on £5 ramen from a tiny train station eatery, or £300-a-head omakase (chef’s choice) sushi in a tranquil tatami-mat-lined restaurant. Getting overwhelmed? Easy day trips to seaside Kamakura, mountainous Nikko or nearby Hakone, famous for its onsen (hot springs), can break up the city intensity. Mount Fuji, Japan’s iconic peak, is only a speedy train ride away too.

  • Best hotels in Tokyo: where to stay in style for all budgets
  • Tokyo city guide

Kyoto, a three-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo, is the country’s other essential must-see city, and it couldn’t be more different. Ancient temples and shrines, cobbled streets stuffed with atmospheric tearooms and darting geishas – it’s a proper historical throwback. Rather than just tick off the busy headliner stops like Kiyomizudera, Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari, try to strike out to some of the quieter, lesser-known temples and shrines. There are around 2,000 within the city, and the smallest, sleepiest ones often feel the most magical.

  • Kyoto guide: Where to eat, drink shop and stay in Japan’s temple-filled city

Hiroshima is synonymous with the devastating 1945 nuclear bomb attack, but today this low-key cultural city has plenty for visitors. Both the haunting figure of the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum are essential – if difficult – stops. Most travellers also come here to see one of Japan’s most iconic shrines: Unesco-listed Miyajima. Its ‘floating’ red torii gate has graced many a postcard. Active types also enjoy the nearby 70km-long Shimanami Kaido cycling trail, which sews up six islands in the Seto Inland Sea, ending in lush temple-studded Shikoku.

Beyond this classic trio of stops, where you should head in Japan depends on your individual interests and time scale.

Osaka, less than 30 minutes from Kyoto, is another major city with a thrumming restaurant scene and plenty of museums. In contrast, nearby ancient capital Nara is like a mini Kyoto with oodles of old-world charm and historic temples – plus a cheeky population of free-roaming deer.

  • 10 things to do in Osaka

Art lovers often head to rural Naoshima, one of the Seto islands, for its internationally acclaimed contemporary galleries, sculpture by Yayoi Kusama and boundary-pushing architecture by Tadao Ando.

Nature fans can’t go wrong with Shikoku, where remote temples, rope bridges and waterfalls are cloaked in dense greenery.

Japanese Alps

If visiting in winter, don’t miss the Japanese Alps. Wooden villages in Gifu prefecture look plucked straight out of Switzerland; Tayakama’s quaint old town is filled with the aroma of brewing sake. There are steaming onsens set in view of white-capped peaks and frolicking snow monkeys. Ski bunnies, meanwhile, have the Olympic slopes of Nagano, blanketed in reliable powder, to keep them busy.

Best under-the-radar destinations

Few first-time visitors make it to the southern island of Kyushu. Fewer still visit its remote north-eastern Kunisaki Peninsula, far from the (elsewhere comprehensive) train network. But they’re missing out. This hilly volcanic peninsula is an ancient religious centre, stuffed with timewarp temples and large-scale Buddhist carvings, and cloaked in bamboo groves and forest. To experience it properly you’ll need to be comfortable self-driving, or visit with an operator such as Walk Japan (walkjapan.com), which can arrange transport.

Okinawan islands

In Japan’s far southern reaches – closer to Taiwan than Tokyo – the subtropical Okinawan islands have a culture, food scene and landscape all their own. The main isles are largely host to holiday resorts, but the Yaeyama chain is still relatively rustic and untouched. Mangrove-covered Iriomote Island, recently named a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a tropical wilderness of peaks and waterfalls, and home to a petite endangered wildcat. Taketomi Island, in contrast, is villagey and beachy, with water buffalo and weaving centres turning out lovely handmade crafts.

Tohoku, the northern section of Japan’s main Honshu island, fell somewhat off the tourist circuit following 2011’s tsunami. But it has everything you could want in a Japanese break: atmospheric old towns, epic scenery, great food and buzzing matsuri (festivals). In Yamagata, Ginzan Onsen is the picture of a romantic hot springs town, with cosy historic inns and a 22m-high waterfall. Miyagi’s Genbikei Gorge, meanwhile, is a brilliant destination for hikers. In winter, you can visit ski resorts Appi Kogen and Zao, and in spring, stroll under rows of weeping cherry trees in samurai town Kakunodate. All without the tourist crowds of Tokyo or Kyoto.

Best things to do

Karaoke in tokyo.

Karaoke in Tokyo is iconic for a reason. It’s plentiful, cheap and discreet – with private booths, rather than onlooking crowds. What you’ll pay will vary depending on the location, karaoke chain, time of day and number in your party. Daytime midweek prices can sometimes be as low as £1-2 per 30 minutes.

Stay in a ryokan

You haven’t really experienced old-world Japan until you’ve stayed in a ryokan, a traditional inn. You’ll sleep on a roll-out futon mattress in a tatami-mat-lined room, lounge about in comfy yukata robes and sample traditional multi-course meals (sometimes served inside your room). Many ryokans also come with onsen, Japanese hot springs – another must-try. Do note: bathing is strictly in the buff, sexes are separated and, in most cases, tattoos are banded.

Eat from a kaiten

Japan has one of the richest, most diverse food cultures in the world. But if you have one culinary ‘must’, it’s visiting a kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi bar. Inexpensive yet good quality, it’s a self-serve experience, with each plate clearly colour-coded according to its price. At the cheapest outposts in Tokyo, you can have a feast for £10-15 a head.

Getting around

Unless you’re going to sub-tropical Okinawa, internal flights don’t make much sense in Japan – the high-speed rail network is just too good. Unless you’re sticking to Tokyo, buy a Japan Rail Pass (japanrailpass.net), which allows unlimited travel on most major lines throughout the country. A seven-day pass costs about £186 and must be purchased before you travel to Japan.

For those rare parts of the country not covered by rail, there are usually good, regular coach services. Or you can hire a car; roads are well-maintained and driving is, like the UK, on the left side of the road.

How to get there

Direct flights land into one of Tokyo’s two airports, Haneda and Narita. The former is slightly closer to the main city districts you’ll want to explore, including Shinjuku and Shibuya. Before the pandemic it was also possible to fly direct to Osaka; time will tell if this route is revived. Try British Airways, Japan Airlines (JAL) and ANA for nonstop flights.

If you don’t mind a stopover, you can often save cash by flying via the likes of Dubai (with Emirates) or Finland (with Finnair).

Money-saving tip

Depachika, the underground food halls typically found under major department stores, are a wonderland for cut-price eats. You can get gourmet sushi, onigiri (rice balls), yakitori (skewers) and more for a bargain. Conbini (convenience stores) such as Family Mart, 7-Eleven and Lawson have great (if slightly less premium) options too.

  • Japan travel: Eight ways to save money when visiting this pricey tourist favourite

What’s the weather like?

Tokyo weather ranges from mild winters to hot summers. Alpine regions get lots of snow in winter, whereas the southern Okinawa islands are subtropical. Pack according to your itinerary.

What time zone is it in?

GMT+9 hours. Japan does not observe Daylight Savings Time.

What currency do I need?

Japanese yen. Cash is still widely used. Convenience store ATMs usually accept foreign cards.

What language is spoken?

Japanese. In cities and other major visitor destinations, English is widely spoken.

Are there any cultural taboos?

Japan has a complex culture and visitors often worry about accidentally offending. In truth, you’re not expected to know the ins-and-outs, so try not to panic. But a few points to note: don’t talk on your phone on public transport. Don’t eat or smoke while walking. And never pass food between pairs of chopsticks or leave your chopsticks sticking upright in a bowl of rice; both mimic traditional Japanese funerary customs.

No visit to Tokyo would be complete without exploring its pop culture—two hotspots include Harajuku and Akihabara. In Harajuku, you’ll find the latest fashion trends and quirky shops, while Akihabara is a paradise for fans of anime, manga, and video games.

Hotel Groove Shinjuku, in Tokyo, Japan.

The hotel’s on-site restaurant, JAM17, offers a delightful dining experience, blending Japanese and Western cuisines with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Exploring Kyoto

The Bamboo Forest in Kyoto, Japan.

While Tokyo dazzles with its modernity, Kyoto captivates with its timeless beauty and cultural heritage. As Japan’s capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto is the heart of traditional Japanese culture. Kyoto is home to an incredible number of temples, shrines, and historic sites, each offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich spiritual and cultural history. One of the most famous is Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, a stunning Zen temple covered in gold leaf that reflects beautifully in the surrounding pond. Another must-visit site is Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of red torii gates that form a pathway up the mountain, creating a breathtakingly serene atmosphere.

Maikos walking on in Gion, Kyoto.

The historic district of Gion is another highlight of Kyoto. Known as the center of Kyoto’s geisha culture, Gion is filled with traditional wooden machiya houses and narrow streets that transport you back in time. It’s a wonderful place to explore on foot, particularly in the evening when the lanterns are lit, casting a soft glow over the streets.

Staying at Machiya Residence Rikyu-An offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Japanese living. This beautifully restored machiya, or wooden townhouse, is located in the heart of Kyoto and provides an authentic and immersive experience. With tatami-mat rooms, sliding shoji screens, and a tranquil inner garden, Rikyu-An combines the charm of old Kyoto with modern comforts.

Food tours are popular excursions in Kyoto.

For food lovers, the Pontocho Evening Food Tour is a good option. Pontocho is one of Kyoto’s most famous dining districts, known for its narrow alleys and traditional wooden buildings. The tour takes you to several local izakayas and restaurants, where you can sample Kyoto’s famous kaiseki cuisine, yakitori, and more. It’s a fantastic way to experience the local food culture while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Pontocho.

Traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

A popular activity for many tourists to Kyoto is a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The Tea Ceremony at Camellia Teahouse is located in the heart of Kyoto, and provides an intimate setting where you can participate in a tea ceremony led by a skilled tea master. You’ll learn about the rituals and techniques involved in preparing matcha (powdered green tea) and have the opportunity to savor the delicate flavors of the tea along with traditional Japanese sweets.

Planning a tour to Japan

Most Japan tours start or end in Tokyo.

While some people prefer booking their travel ala cart (hotels, activities, train travel), others prefer to book with an agency. One option is InsideJapan Tours , which was founded by two Japanophiles, Alastair Donnelly and Simon King. Here’s how it works. The agency creates an itinerary based on the requests of the traveler. The itinerary can be in-depth and include hotels, activities, train tickets and more (with each day planned out from morning to night) or can be more a frame-work (with hotels planned and suggestions made in terms of activities).

When including activities in the itinerary, the agency can include Insider Experiences which range from video game tours, an insider’s look at the world of sumo wrestling, Tokyo’s Manga and Anime scene, Kyoto’s gardens tours and Gion’s geisha culture.

One of the key strengths of InsideJapan Tours is their deep knowledge of the country. Their team of experts includes both expatriates who have lived in Japan for years and native Japanese staff. The Insider Experiences are all led by native English-speaking guides, who are also fluent in Japanese and currently live in Japan.

Looming typhoon disrupts Japan travel plans, may near Tokyo

Many people in Japan have been looking forward to traveling this weekend for the traditional summer holidays. But the weather is throwing a kink into their plans.

A typhoon named Ampil is bearing down on the eastern portion of the country's main island, including Tokyo.

Ampil is continuing to strengthen as it moves north, accompanied by a storm zone maintaining great force. After approaching the Izu Islands, the storm looks likely to near eastern Japan on Friday through Saturday.

The Central Japan Railway Company, JR Central, says it will cancel all services on the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train line between Tokyo and Nagoya for the entire day Friday.

The East Japan Railway Company, JR East, says there may be service suspensions and major delays on Friday from around noon and into the evening on the Tohoku, Jo-etsu, Hokuriku, Akita and Yamagata Shinkansen lines.

As for air travel, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines say they will be canceling a total of around 500 flights on Friday serving Haneda and Narita Airports.

Japan summer holidays in full swing amid megaquake caution

KYODO NEWS

Japan's summer holiday season moved into full swing on Saturday as people heading to their hometowns, crowded railway stations and airports amid caution following the weather agency's advisory over a potential megaquake.

"It is my first visit to my hometown in five years after a hiatus due to the coronavirus. Now it is an earthquake," Tomohiro Ogawa, 49, a resident of Chiba Prefecture, said at a packed JR Tokyo Station, adding he has discussed preparing for a disaster following the alert with his family.

On Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued its first-ever advisory on a potential megaquake in the Nankai Trough, which runs along the Pacific coast, just hours after a magnitude 7.1 quake struck southwestern Japan, with its epicenter in waters off Miyazaki Prefecture, near the western edge of the trough.

Although the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train ran at reduced speed in one section in central Japan, causing delays of around 20 minutes, reserved seats for services departing Tokyo were mostly sold out throughout Saturday.

At JR Nagoya Station, a 20-year-old resident from Yokohama near Tokyo said he fully charged his smartphone and brought more water than usual as a precautionary measure.

At Haneda airport in Tokyo, seats for domestic flights, including those bound for areas where the megaquake could potentially cause damage, have almost been full.

"We can finally go on a family trip after being forced to repeatedly cancel due to the coronavirus. I am worried about an earthquake, but we can't worry about it too much," Masatoshi Eguchi, 48, said at Haneda airport before leaving for Okinawa in southern Japan.

At Miyazaki airport, Rikuto Kawashima, 24, who arrived from Fukuoka Prefecture, said, "I was worried if my parents' home was damaged due to the (M7.1) quake. I am glad I could visit my hometown safely."

Konomi Matsuo, from Tokyo, was greeted with a hug by her family at the airport, and she said, "I am worried about aftershocks."

In Kochi Prefecture, one of the regions expected to be affected by a potential megaquake along the Nankai Trough, Ryuta Nakaoka, who arrived at Kochi Airport from Aichi Prefecture to visit his parents, said, "I will stay on alert until I leave Kochi."

A university student who arrived at JR Kochi Station from Kagawa Prefecture said, "I have concerns (about the megaquake), but I am also worried about my family."

Following the issuance of the advisory, accommodation facilities in tourist spots, especially those located along the Pacific coast in central and western Japan, were hit by cancellations, while some beaches in the regions have been closed and swimming prohibited.

Up to 64 people have taken refuge at evacuation centers in Aichi and Kochi prefectures in response to the advisory, according to local governments.

For the Bon holidays between Friday and Aug. 18, railway operators said reserved seats were up around 1.2 times from a year earlier on local and bullet trains as of July 25. Reservations for domestic flights were roughly unchanged from the year before.

Operators of expressways said traffic jams of 10 kilometers or more are 1.6 times more likely to occur.

Japanese solo travelers have doubled in five years, according to a Euromonitor survey to 39 countries

yahoo travel japan english

A lifestyle survey, conducted by International market research company Euromonitor in 39 countries, finds that Japan has the highest percentage of people who performed ‘solo travel.’

In response to the question of "Who do you travel with when you go on vacation?", the percentage of people who answered "I often travel alone" was 7.2%, the lowest number of responses worldwide. In Japan, however, 19.2%, about one in five people, chose ‘solo travel.’

The survey results also show that the percentage of people who answered ‘solo travel’ in Japan has almost doubled in five years from 10.4% in 2019.

yahoo travel japan english

By gender of Japanese responders, 13.5% of women and 24.2% of men answered ‘I often travel alone.’ By generation, 24.6% of people aged 30 to 44 answered ‘I often travel alone,’ the highest of all generations.

In addition, when visitors to Japan from the Asia-Pacific region were asked what they consider important when deciding on a travel destination, the top answer was ‘a place to relax,’ followed by ‘a place to enjoy good food, ‘ ‘a place with nature or adventure activities’ and ‘a place to enjoy local cultures.’ Meanwhile, only 10% answered ‘shopping.’

Regarding comfortable communication with brands or business operators, 48.9% answered that they prefer to communication in person for customer services, much higher than the percentage of communication with chatbot.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was August. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and December the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.
