City of a hundred towers and bien vivre.
Ascoli Piceno is the city of white stone. Its travertine buildings, the bell towers and turrets that punctuate its skyline, the stately squares and an atmosphere that recalls the past make this medieval city in the Marche one of the most monumental in Italy.
Ancona: sentinel on the Adriatic Sea At the northern end of the Conero promontory, the city of Ancona stands on a natural harbour dominating a wide stretch of the Adriatic coast. Its historical centre, a few metres from the ferry embarkation point, holds art treasures, beautiful buildings and that liveliness that only port cities possess. To be discovered on foot, from the port to the Duomo, to the Cardeto park and the Passetto beach, where Ancona's inhabitants go to enjoy the sea, Ancona is a city that knows how to amaze. A stroll through historical sights and the sea view Upon arrival in Ancona, by car or from the station, one of the first monuments to attract attention is the pentagonal building at the entrance to the old port, the so-called Mole Vanvitelliana, named after its architect Luigi Vanvitelli, built as a lazaret for quarantine of people and goods coming from overseas, now converted to a space for cultural events. Continuing towards the maritime station, one can see the 15th-century Palazzo Benincasa and the Loggia dei Mercanti, the most important secular building in flamboyant Venetian Gothic style. Entering the historical centre, along Viale Mazzini, you can see the Renaissance Fontana del Calamo or Tredici Cannelle, with its bronze masks. Heading up towards the acropolis, after visiting the Mercato delle erbe (Herb Market), Art Nouveau structure in iron and cast iron, you will see the beautiful Church of Gesù, also by Vanvitelli, overlooking the sea. Next, the Roman Amphitheatre, rediscovered in the 19th century, and the Cathedral of St Ciriaco, Roman-Gothic basilica built on the remains of a temple dedicated to Venus and an early Christian basilica: spectacularly dominating the city and port. If you walk down towards the old harbour you can see the Arch of Trajan from the 2nd century AD and the Clementine Arch, an 18th-century work by Vanvitelli. To the south, Cardeto Park a green area on the hill of the same name where you can walk with the sea on the horizon: inside you will find the old lighthouse and the suggestive monumental Jewish cemetery, among the largest in Europe. Must-see museums in Ancona The National Archaeological Museum of Marche exhibits the largest collection of artefacts in the entire region from the Palaeolithic to the Classical period, where visiting the 16th-century Palazzo Ferretti with its rich decorations and splendid views of the port and bay of Ancona is possible. Ancona's history is reconstructed in the City Museum with documents, exhibits, models, educational panels, maps and videos. The Pinacoteca Comunale in Palazzo Bosdari exhibits masterpieces such as Titian's Gozzi Altarpiece, his first autograph work, Lorenzo Lotto's Sacred Conversation, and works by Sebastiano Del Piombo. A unique experience is offered by the Omero Tactile Museum, housed in the Mole Vanvitelliana, offering the rare opportunity to learn about art through touch, thanks to life-size plaster casts of sculptures, models of famous monuments and archaeological finds. Ancona’s beaches The best-loved and most popular beach for the people of Ancona is Passetto, a tongue of sand under the green promontory, which has the peculiarity of including more than 500 “caves” dug into the rock from the 19th century until the 1960s by locals. The reason? To store small boats and fishing gear. Each “cave” is enclosed, like a garage, with salvaged material of various kinds and colours: a picturesque ensemble. Less frequented, because access is difficult, is the Scalaccia beach at Pietralacroce. It is reached by steps, not always easy. Once there, however, the effort will be amply rewarded. Also beautiful and wild is the Mezzavalle beach, continuation of the Portonovo bay, of sand and gravel: reached by two steep paths to be tackled with suitable boots. What to eat in Ancona Among the most typical dishes of Ancona cuisine is stockfish or dried codfish cooked with potatoes, tomatoes and herbs. If you are wondering why cod – a fish from northern Europe – the answer lies in the frequency of trade contacts between Ancona and northern European countries. Here, as in many other towns in the Marche, we eat brodetto which is a typical fish soup, and the wild mosciolo of Portonovo, a type of mussel that lives on the Conero coast, recognised as a Slow Food presidium.
Pesaro-Urbino
Where culture and history meet the sea The province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region is one of Italy's historical provinces. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Pesaro is a typical seaside town but what makes it special is not only its seven kilometres of beach on equipped and free coastline. Its historical centre guards an important artistic heritage. Not to be missed are the mosaics of the Cathedral and a tour of the places of Rossini's memory; indeed, Gioacchino Rossini was born in Pesaro in 1792. Two cultural events bring tourists and enthusiasts to the city: the Rossini Opera Festival and the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema. Wandering around the alleys, buildings and squares of Urbino, it is easy to see why its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start your tour at the Ducal Palace, which is more of a fortified city than a palace. Here, one of the iconic paintings of Italian art, Piero della Francesca's Ideal City, is preserved. If you are an art lover, don't miss the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche. Capital city but also small villages, Gradara and its fortress, and unspoilt nature such as that of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Park: the province of Pesaro-Urbino holds great treasures. From Fano to Montefeltro, from Gabicce to the San Bartolo Riviera. Finally, for lovers of outdoor sports, 20 km from Urbino, the Marmitte dei Giganti offer a real show. Book a canoe tour to enjoy the beauty of the gorge from the inside. Combined with a trek inside the Furlo Gorge State Nature Reserve, the views are breathtaking.
The events linked to the origins of Macerata tell the tale of the arduous origins of a city now surrounded by peaceful, fertile countryside. The city of Macerata was founded by refugees fleeing the destruction of the Roman settlement Helvia Rìcina. It became a municipality in 1138 and an episcopal see in 1320. During the last two decades of the 16th century, Macerata's fame spread beyond the borders of Italy to China, when the learned priest Matteo Ricci left his native city to embark on missions in the Far East, becoming the first member of his religious order to be accepted at the Ming imperial court. Ricci, a Jesuit, had a huge influence on China. By the time of his death in Beijing in 1610, there were 300 Christian churches in China. In the meantime, Ricci's native city had begun to acquire the genteel, measured dignity for which it is still known today. The historic centre is entirely surrounded by the city walls, which were built during the 15th and 16th centuries and still virtually intact, giving Macerata the characteristic charm typical of Italian provincial cities. Macerata has its own opera and theatre season and is also a thriving university town: as genteel and peaceful as the city may appear, it's anything but dull! The sober elegance of the city centre opens onto the marvellous neoclassical Sferisterio, an open-air stadium built for the ancient ball game "pallone a bracciale”, which is now a venue for operatic performances and international events. Strolling through the city centre, you can admire historic buildings and churches in the Mannerist and Baroque styles, in the area around Piazza della Libertà. The four sides of the piazza bear signs of the city's refinement, with the City Hall, the 16th-century Apostolic Palace (now housing the Prefecture), the Civic Tower with its astronomical clock, the "Loggia dei Mercanti" (Merchants' Lodge) and Palazzo Ricci, with its 20th-century art collection featuring works by artists including Medardo Rosso, Balla, Boccioni, De Chirico and Burri, to name a few. On the same square, next to the Church of San Paolo, is an imposing archway marking the entrance to the University, one of the oldest in the world. Its academic faculties, one following another in via Don Minzoni since 1540, form a city within the city. Via Don Minzoni is also where you will find the beautiful Palazzo Buonaccorsi, home to the public museums with their collections of historic art, modern art, and the Carriage Museum. Here you can also admire the splendid frescoed vault of the Aeneid Hall, and don't miss Tintoretto's famous "Adoration of the Magi", which once embellished the beautiful church of Santa Maria delle Vergini, with its tapering octagonal dome, located about 2 km from Porta Picena. And the food? The fabulous flavours of the local produce are just waiting to be discovered.
Just 7 kilometres from the Adriatic sea, in a stunning location in the foothills separating the Eta Vivo and Tenna valleys, the city of Fermo extends over a steep hillside dominated by the Cathedral. Visitors are entranced by the amazing panoramicviews of the sea, from the scenic vistas along the roads and from the Girfalco hill to the unexpected glimpses between the rooftops. Capture the real charm and beauty of Fermo by taking a stroll through its narrow winding streets - often made entirely of terracotta, a legacy of the town's Roman and medieval origins - and through the alleys lined with dark shadowy buildings. Or admire the fifteenth-century palaces and Renaissance buildings that have silently witnessed the city's history over the centuries. You can find them in Corso Cavour, Corso Cefalonia and Piazza del Popolo: the true heart and symbol of Fermo. Piazza del Popolo, which has seen so much of the life of this city over the centuries, is also a beautiful gateway to the Girofalco hill. Overlooking the square are the city's iconic landmarks including the Renaissance-era Palazzo dei Priori, a historic building contains the public art gallery and the Sala del Mappamondo, or Globe Room. It is home to the library's oldest map collections and takes its name from the globe created in 1713 by the cartographer Amanzio Moroncelli from Fabriano. In the city centre you'll also find the Apostolic Palace and the Duomo, with its asymmetric facade made of Istrian stone. Inside, you'll find an impressive collection of artworks, including a 12th-century Greek-Byzantine icon and the remains of the mosaic floor from the 5th-century Paleochristian church on which it was built. The square with its loggia architecture is also used as a market area and meeting point, and is and the perfect place for a relaxing walk through the arcades. The loggia balcony connecting Palazzo dei Priori to Palazzo degli Studi is very beautiful: remember to look upwards as you walk along it, so as not to miss the beautiful frescoed vaults. And if you do happen to be in Fermo on a Thursday evening during the summer, you certainly won't want to miss the antiques and crafts market held in the arcades throughout July and August.
Just a stone's throw from the sea and made of travertine, the Marche town shines with golden light. In this timeless place, art, architecture and food and wine are the embodiment of Italian excellence at its finest. All this is Ascoli Piceno, a medieval city of a thousand surprises that is bound to win everyone over.

Ascoli Piceno
Those visiting the Marche region of Italy will be delighted with a stop in Ascoli Piceno , a town that can trace its origins back to the days before Rome and is a great source of ancient and medieval architecture. Surrounded by two national parks, this town of 54,000 is located where the Castellano Creek and River Tronto meet.
Sightseeing in Ascoli Piceno
The cathedral.
Ascoli Piceno’s dramatic cathedral is dedicated to Saint Emygdius . The architecture of the church dates back to many different periods as its structure has been worked upon several times over the centuries. Inside, visitors will find a beautiful altarpiece created by Carlo Crivelli, an artist who lived and worked in the town. The cathedral also features several other pieces of impressive art and architecture: among them Pietro Alemanno’ s Madonna delle Grazie.
Saint Francis Church
The construction of this Gothic-style church started in 1258 and its dome was completed in 1549. St. Francis Church is noted for its central portal –beautifully decorated in local travertine – and its monument to Pope Julius II. The Bramantesque Loggia dei Mercanti , constructed in the 16th century, is annexed to the church.
Convent of Saint Augustinus
The church’s single nave, originally constructed in the 14th century, was renovated and enlarged in the 15th century to make room for two aisles. The convent today, with its rectangular façade and beautiful entry, is home to an auditorium, a contemporary art gallery, and the Town’s Library.
Church of Saint Peter Martyr
Inside this 13th century church, visitors will be able to see the stunning reliquary of the Holy Thorn that was gifted to the town by Philip IV of France. The side portal, added in the 16th century, was designed by Cola d’Amatrice.
Franciscan Convent
The convent was once a very important cultural center and, although only two of the original cloisters remain, it is still worth a visit. The architecture is quite noteworthy and the complex is also important due to its history. Several important students, including Pope Sixtus V, were once students here.
Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo
The Palace of the People’s Captains was built in the 13th century out of three pre-existing buildings that were connected and extended. In its early days, the palazzo was the seat of the people’s captains and, later, of the Papal governors.
In the 15th century, the southern part of the building was enlarged and, in later years, additional changes were made to the building’s façade. A new portal was added that includes a monument to Pope Paul III.
Caffè Meletti in Ascoli Piceno
Caffè Meletti in Piazza del Popolo , near the Palazzo dei Capitani, is one of the 150 Historic Cafés of Italy. The café opened at the beginning of the XX Century; it has been frequented by famous people and has always been the center of the cultural life of the town. Its art nouveau style and the old pink color of the façade, differentiates it from the other palaces of the square.

A Weekend In Ascoli Piceno, Le Marche
- May 16, 2023
Although Italy has long been a popular destination for vacationers, so many spots remain untouched by mass travel. Among these is Ascoli Piceno, a town in Le Marche that has managed to maintain a low profile despite all of its splendor. It embodies the essence of la dolce vita , with its slow pace of life and an impeccably preserved centro storico . I have a particularly strong connection to Ascoli Piceno, as my family originates from a nearby town.
Many describe this town as elegant, which may be attributed to its medieval architecture and extensive use of travertine stone. Emanating peaceful energy, the town can almost seem sleepy by day. But once la passeggiata is in full swing, the town becomes lively with locals looking to enjoy the night out. After reading this article, I’m sure you’ll start planning a weekend getaway to this tesoro da scoprire .
What To Do In Ascoli Piceno
A passeggiata in Ascoli Piceno’s historic centre is obligatory. You can choose a self-guided tour at your own leisure or hop on the Ascoli Explorer . Commencing at Piazza Arringo, this sightseeing tourist train offers tours in eight languages. This piazza features the Cathedral of Sant’Emidio and a beautiful seahorse fountain that dates back to 1884.
Just a few steps away is Piazza del Popolo, an architectural marvel and the beating heart of this town. It’s considered to be among Italy’s most beautiful piazzas and often called il salotto d’Italia — the living room of Italy. With stunning mountain views, the Basilica di San Francesco, restaurants, and shops, this is the place to be!
While Ascoli Piceno is beautiful by day, it has a certain magic to it by night. Illuminated by the starry sky and all the decorative lighting throughout the town, it’s no wonder that the locals love to enjoy the evening out. Teatro Ventidio Basso is an elegant neo-classical theatre that hosts many performances, including operas, concerts, musicals, and more. This stunning venue is a great place to enjoy evening entertainment, especially in the colder months. Be sure to purchase tickets online ahead of time!
Finally, what would a visit to Le Marche be without wandering into the countryside and delving into this region’s culinary traditions? Just a short drive out of Ascoli Piceno lies Villa Cicchi , an agriturismo where one can enjoy true zero-kilometer dining. Better yet, you can enjoy local culture by joining a cooking class or a wine-tasting experience. Learn how to make fresh egg pasta, pizza, or the traditional fritto misto all’ascolana , a deep-fried delight!
Where To Eat In Ascoli Piceno
The ascolana tenera is a green olive varietal grown in the province of Ascoli Piceno and the star ingredient of the famous olive ascolane . Lots of patience goes into preparing them, from soaking the olives to carefully pitting them. Next, they’re stuffed with a filling of finely ground meats. Finally, they’re breaded and deep-fried, resulting in an undoubtedly addictive treat.
Not only are o live ascolane present at every special occasion, but luckily they’re also on menus across the region. Located in the center of town, Migliori Olive Ascolane is a favorite among the locals. I can confirm that they are in fact tasty, and sampling them momentarily transported me back to my childhood. A flood of fond memories came into my mind of my Nonna Vincenza’s olive ascolane , which were made with much love for our family.
Local Pizzas
Despite my love for olive ascolane, I recognize that they won’t keep you full for the entirety of a weekend visit. Fortunately, for such a small town, Ascoli Piceno has many dining options to choose from. La Nicchia is a popular option that has gained recognition from the prestigious Gambero Rosso . Here you’ll find their famous pizza along with local dishes. Try the pappardelle with porcini mushrooms, or roast rabbit stuffed with seasonal herbs.
Another great spot is Pizzeria Bella Napoli, which offers more than 50 varieties of pizza, all of which can be made gluten-free ! It’s accredited by the AIC, which means it’s safe for diners with Celiac disease. My personal favorite here was their pizza with artichokes. Both of these restaurants serve olive ascolane so be sure to order some fried appetizers to start.
Finally, no visit to Ascoli Piceno would be complete without a stop at Caffè Meletti . With a front-row seat of Piazza del Popolo, this historic venue rose to fame for its production of Anisetta liqueur. Since it opened in 1907, it has hosted a number of prolific artists and aristocrats, including King Vittorio Emanuele and Ernest Hemingway.
Today, this establishment appears in the Michelin guide. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a morning cappuccino e cornetto or an evening aperitivo . There’s also a terrace upstairs where you can dine overlooking the square. I recommend you visit twice so you can experience all the ambiance this spot has to offer, both inside and out.
Where To Stay In Ascoli Piceno
Palazzo dei Mercanti is an ideal accommodation option, offering an unbeatable location and no shortage of historic charm. Just steps from Piazza del Popolo, this elegant four-star hotel is equipped with all the amenities needed to enjoy a weekend of pampering. It has a beautiful spa that features a sauna, Turkish bath, massage therapy, and more! But in true Italian fashion, the show stealer is its restaurant, CiBo, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Set in the countryside, Il Poggio Resort is a short drive from the historic center of Ascoli Piceno. Offering breathtaking views from its swimming pool, this is the perfect choice for anyone looking to relax and recharge! It’s also a popular wedding venue, largely because of its exquisite restaurant, which offers indoor and outdoor dining. The guest rooms and suites have all been designed in a manner that perfectly juxtaposes rustic charm with modernity.
Where To Shop In Ascoli Piceno
The shopping scene in Ascoli Piceno is quite enviable, especially for a small town. Strolling through the streets, stylish window displays are sure to delight any shopaholic. One can find anything imaginable from clothing, to linens, and other home decor items. Even if you’re not a shopping fanatic, most of us like to bring home a typical souvenir of the destination we’re visiting. Ascoli Piceno is known for its painted pottery and, fortunately, there are a number of shops selling hand-painted maiolica .
If one wants to purchase true, authentic ceramics, then a visit to Maiolica Ascolana Caponi is a must! If you stop to ask locals where to find great pottery, the overwhelming majority will recommend you visit Luciano Caponi’s shop. He is the artisan behind these beautiful and unique pieces, all hand-made using the traditional methods of la maiolica ascolana . Despite being the pride of Ascoli Piceno’s art scene, he offers reasonably priced pottery, so be sure to make a stop here and support a local artist.
Bottega Degli Artisti is a bright and airy shop selling all sorts of hand-painted pottery, all depicting scenes and landmarks of Ascoli Piceno. Shoppers will first be drawn into the store by its display of hand-painted Christmas ornaments. Once inside, there is a wide array of treasures to choose from, including tiles, plates, table lamps, and so much more! These works of art are hand-painted in the town of Castelli, in neighboring Abruzzo. The shopkeeper can also frame the maiolica tiles in beautiful rustic frames made from local wood.

Ascoli Piceno, Italy: travel guide and highlights of a visit to Ascoli Piceno
Visit Ascoli Piceno
The town of Ascoli-Piceno is located at the southern end of the Marches region of Italy, in an attractive setting surrounded by mountains and designated natural parcs.
With origins dating back well before the ancient Romans, the name of the town comes from the Piceni tribe who once occupied this spot.
Explore Ascoli-Piceno
There is a very pleasant walled town to discover in Ascoli Piceno, with an attractive and interesting medieval centre, based around Piazza del Popolo. The town is also known for its towers, of which more than 50 remain from the original 200.
The Piazza del Popolo has been at the centre of the town for at least 2000 years, and many of the buildings around the square are constructed in marble (known as travertino).
The square itself includes two particular highlights: the Palazzo del Capitani del Popolo (1545) and, at the northern edge, the San Francesco Church. The Palazzo is a particularly fine building with a simple design incorporating an ornate entry and an oversized clock.
The lower and simpler arcaded buildings on the other side of the square are, in their own way, equally impressive. Also close to here you can see the 16th century trading centre, called the Loggia del Mercanti.
Head west and north through the town centre along the Via delle Torri towards the Trento river to explore the medieval centre of the town. This is the highlight of Ascoli Piceno, with unspoiled 13th-14th streets lined with ancient houses and sophisticated shops, and the occasional church.
There are also a couple of small interesting temples to discover in Ascoli-Piceno: the Sant'Emidio alle Grotte, with a baroque facade built against the rockface, and the Sant'Emidio Rosso, an octagonal red tower.
Keep going as far as the river to see a particularly impressive Roman bridge. There are also a few other Roman remnants to be seen in the town including a washhouse.
Rest and relaxation
Time for a rest so do as every visitor to Ascoli does and head for the Caffe Melletti, and choose whether to sit in the beautiful art nouveau interior or under the frescoed arches outside.
If your visit includes the second saturday in July or the first Sunday in August, a splendid historical recreation known as the Quintina takes over the town, and you can watch a traditional jousting tournament.
You can find more local travel ideas in and the Marche guide .

Ascoli Piceno, a town of just fewer than 5,000 people, lies at the confluence of the Tronto and Castellano rivers in the Le Marche region. Called the "City of Travertine" for the milk and honey piazze and facades, Ascoli's historic center is an architectural gem. Once home to over 200 spindly towers, almost 50 remain. The public squares clatter with activity, especially in the evenings, as folks settle in for a glass of wine, always with little offerings of food, or an Anisetta from the famous Anisetta Meletti , a place that's been pouring since 1870.
If you wish to embrace the spirit of Ascoli Piceno, you might take your lodging, as we did, at the Antico Borgo Piceno , just outside the walls of the center. After what could come to be the best breakfast you've ever had in Italy, you can exit and turn right, walk past the antique public wash basins called Lavatoio di Porta Cappuccina and bear right on the Roman bridge that leads you through the city gate. At night, the view of the city from the hotel, especially during a full moon, is quite evocative.
The facilities at the hotel are top notch. We had an apartment, and chose on some warm evenings to sit on the patio and eat some of the wonderful preserved meats, vegetables, cheese and bread of Le Marche while looking at the ancient city that rose up before us.
As you wander Ascoli Piceno, you'll wonder why they don't make all cities like this. The public squares, piazze , are made for relaxing, people-watching, having a drink, or just sitting back while lost in a blistful thankfulness that your taxes are at work making something beautiful and useful for all.
Let's list the two main piazze, followed by pictures
- Piazza Del Popolo: Central, Sacred and Profane architecture, bars, restaurants, Anisetta Meletti.
- Piazza Arringo: South side of the historic center, Sant'Emidio Church, Archaeological Museum, a stand which offers the famous Olive Ascolane. Also the start of the little tourist train.

Recommended restaurants.
Ascoli is inexpensive, especially if you're used to the high prices of the tourist cities.
Piccolo Teatro , Via Carlo Goldoni 2, was the perfect introduction to the traditional food of Ascoli. Marked on the map, the restaurant is a single, smallish room (make reservations in the summer) run by Chef Luca and his wife Diletta. You can reserve on the web site, or by calling 0736 261574.
Snacking? Well, you can. Grab a bag of the meat-stuffed, giant, deep-fried olives called olive Asoloane at Migliori Olive Ascolane at the west corner of Piazza Arringo. Just down the street is Primitivo, which offers their own production of honey, olive oil, local wine, candy like you've never had before, chocolate, tea, and other staples of modern life.
Weather and Climate
The climate of Ascoli Piceno is warm and temperate with significant rain, which falls heaviest in September through December. Optimal temperatures occur in May, June, September and October.
Rail Access
You can get to Ascoli Piceno by train. It is the last station on the San Benedetto del Tronto--Ascoli Piceno line, which links to the Adriatic line.
