Is Lahaul-Spiti dangerous?

Which is better, leh or spiti.

Making a choice between two places that have unparalleled beauty is quite difficult. Ladakh, unlike anything that you might have read about it, throws an expected surprise with its stunning landscape of high altitude lakes, stark barren valleys, the Khardung Pass that’s considered to be the highest motorable pass in the world, and several challenging summits. All of this and the fact that its tourism infrastructure has developed well over the years has made Ladakh’s into a crowded place, except during the winters. Spiti, on the other hand, despite its rustic & secluded villages, gorgeous 1000-year-old monasteries, picturesque lakes, the highest post office & motorable village in the world is still less crowded. The tourism infrastructure is still developing and quite a bit of the valley remains inaccessible. You need to hike to reach places like Dhankar and Chandratal Lake since there are no motorable roads.

How many days are enough for Spiti Valley?

You need a minimum of 7-8 days to do justice to a place like Spiti. This time is enough to visit the secluded off-point villages, see the monasteries, spend time with the local people, and try the amazing Tibetan food here.

With options for thrill-seekers such as river rafting, bicycling, and jeep safaris, Ladakh is more suited to those with an adventurous mindset. Contrarily, Spiti Valley, with its abundance of monasteries, is attractive to visitors looking for a calm and spiritual experience. Both of these Himalayan valleys are influenced by Tibetan culture and have breathtaking natural beauty. Ultimately, what you want from a vacation experience will determine whether Spiti Valley or Ladakh is more desirable. Spiti Valley Itinerary (& Circuit Road Trip) from Shimla

Azure waters of Chandratal Lake

Spiti Valley is a cold mountain desert located in the rain shadow region of the Greater Himalayan ranges . It is snuggled in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh.

Proceeding in counterclockwise fashion from Chandigarh, roadway (NH5) of Spiti valley circuit route passes through Solan, Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, Sarahan, Chitkul , Nako, Tabo and Kaza.

The closing line of Spiti circuit traverses along the Spiti river and meets Manali town after it passes through the Atal tunnel or Rohtang pass.

The valley is bounded by the districts of Kinnaur in the south-east, Kullu in the south, and the valleys of Zanskar and Union Territory of Ladakh in the north. In the east, Spiti shares its boundary with Tibet (China).

The name Spiti or Piti — as it is known among the locals— means ‘The Middle Land’ that is the land between India and Tibet.

Spiti valley circuit tour map & places

Why take Shimla-Kaza-Manali route for Spiti Valley Road Trip?

There are two road routes to reach Spiti valley, but we recommend the Shimla-Kaza route because:

  • Manali to Solang valley and Atal tunnel (north portal) road stretch gets busy during peak summer season (i.e. June-August). You may get stuck in a traffic jam.
  • Gramphu to Batal Road is riddled with waterfalls, glacial water melts streams, and water crossings. It is easier and more convenient to drive through this part of the road from Kaza side.
  • There is a gradual increase in altitude (barring Narkanda-Rampur Road segment) when driving on the Shimla-Kaza route. This gradual rise in altitude is good for acclimatization. Especially for people coming from the plains.

What Does It Cost?

All-inclusive price of Spiti valley tour starts from 25,500 INR. The final price will be determined by variables like:

  • Vehicle (4WD SUV or standard)
  • The level of comfort (during stays) you expect.
  • Group size.
  • Pick-up location (Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla or Manali)
  • Departure date (pre-monsoon in June or post-monsoon in September or October)
  • Add-ons availed such as driver, camping gear and guide, and drop location (Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, or Delhi) etc.

To get the Spiti valley circuit tour cost details, please let us know the following details:

  • The group size
  • Arrival city (Chandigarh/ Shimla/Manali), and tour type (standard/premium) etc.
  • Planned month and day of visit
  • Number of days in itinerary
  • Mode of transportation i.e. 4WD SUV / Sedan / Hatchback car.

Spiti valley and upper Kinnaur is a remote region with high-altitude rugged and difficult terrain. Expect stunning and spectacularly beautiful vales with dreamy vistas instead of fancy hotels or road tracks similar to F1 grand prix circuits.

Also known as Kye or Ki Gompa, it is one of the largest monasteries in Spiti valley that also serves as a training center for Lamas. It is believed to be over a thousand years old and has a vast collection of ancient murals and books.

Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary

It was established in 1992, Kibber is India’s only wildlife sanctuary in cold desert and is home to several rare animals like Ibex, Blue Sheep, Red Fox, Tibetan woolly hare, Himalayan wolf, lynx, pika, Tibetan wild ass.

Kunzum Pass

Your first high altitude pass of the journey, unless you have somehow managed to climb up to Shipki La in which case Kunzum will be your second. Connecting the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti, this pass is at an elevation of 4,590 meters, higher than Rohtang La. It remains closed from late October until early June.

Chandratal Lake

A beautiful lake is also the source of the river Chandrabhaga . If you can manage to be around here after sunset, it is a perfect place for capturing some magnificent sky and milky way pictures.

Azure waters of Chandratal Lake

This small lake is one of the key highlights of the journey to Spiti valley and a perfect camping spot. There is also a legend associated with this lake. The confluence of the “moon-born” Chandra and the “sun-born” Bhaga takes place at Tandi, where the fabled Chandrabhaga or Chenab River comes into being.

Interestingly enough, Wikipedia article refer this lake as Tso Chigma . Tso is a Tibetan / Bhoti word which translates to lake, but there is no reference of Chigma either in Tibetan or Bhoti language. A lake is referred to as Dhar in Spiti vernacular language.

The mighty Rohtang pass, the spot where you will cross over to Manali and finish your Spiti journey. The name of this pass literally means “a pile of corpses” which I believe attributes to the fact that a lot of people died while crossing it in ancient times. Expect to find snow at the top no matter which month you are traveling in. The vistas around from the top of the pass and even on the ascent/descent are quite breathtaking.

Palari (or Balari top) is one and hour hour hike away from Demul village. From this vantage point, one can see about 15 (including Demul) villages of Spiti valley.

View from Palari (otherwise called Barali) Top Vantage point in Spiti valley

Spiti Road Trip In Summers

Hit the road on our epic overland journey spanning over ~1200 km, as you traverse seven picturesque districts and explore some of the most sought-after hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. Before venturing into the hidden gems of Spiti valley and Kinnaur, this adventure will take you through breathtaking hill towns like Narkanda, Sarahan, Kalpa. Discover the untamed wilderness of vales like Pin, Hangrang, and Tidong, and marvel at the incredible engineering feat that is the Atal Tunnel. This is an experience of a lifetime, offering a perfect mix of Himalayan beauty, tribal cultural experiences, and adrenaline-pumping road adventure on the old Hindustan-Tibet highway.

BSNL works in all regions of Spiti valley and Kinnaur. Reliance Jio has started expanding its network in Spiti valley. It is expected to get functional by the summer of 2021.

In summers, the maximum temperature crosses the 20 degrees Celsius mark in Spiti valley. During sunny daytime, you’ll feel comfortable just by wearing a t-shirt and trousers. It is always good to get wrapped in layers of clothes, as the weather can change anytime in the Himalayas. Even if the sun starts shining again, you can always get rid of the outer layers of clothing.  Here is the packing list (summers) for Spiti valley:  T-shirts.  A windcheater/ rain jacket. Jeans/trousers.  Light woolen.  A cap/hat.  Sunglasses.  A pair of hiking shoes.  3/4 pairs of regular socks.  A water purifier and filtration bottle (avoid plastic bottle).  Personal hygiene essentials.  Sunscreen sunblock cream. Spiti valley packing list (for winters):  A pair of good quality waterproof trekking boots. Three pairs of cotton socks. Two pairs of waterproof hiking pants. One pair of shorts Two pairs of fleece jumpers.  Two pairs of thermal tops and bottoms One down jacket. Headgear (1 beanie/skull cap, 1 buff, and 1 trekking cap).  A pair of thick gloves Personal hygiene essentials(alcohol-based gel hand sanitizer, soap, towels, toilet papers, baby wipes, etc.).  UV-block sunglasses. First aid kit. A water purifier and filtration bottle.

Spiti valley is acclaimed for its distinctive Moon-esque landscapes and interesting landforms. 5 entities that define the Spiti valley are:  Chandratal — .the lake of moon.   Buddhist monasteries of Ki, Kaza, Kungri, and Tabo.  Snow leopards of Kibber — the grey ghost of the Himalayas. Fascinating Tibetan culture and customs.  Fossils — dating back to the Triassic period (252-201 million years ago) — of  Langza village.

Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on National Highway 5 (NH5). The Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarters of Spiti valley. During winters, Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur road gets closed for a day or two whenever there is a long spell of snowfall. During such events, take the Shimla-Suni-Rampur Bushahr route along the Satluj river. This route stays open for all 365 days of the year. It takes longer — when compared from Manali to Spiti valley (Via Atal tunnel) route — to reach Kaza from Shimla. Shimla is one of the two places (second is Manali town) to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

The road from Manali follows the Solang Valley-Atal tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum Pass-Losar-Kaza route. The distance from Manali to Kaza is 183 km, and it takes about 6-7 hours (at one go) to reach Kaza. Manali-Kaza is a shorter route than the Shimla-Kaza route.  Though the Atal Tunnel has hardly reduced the road distance between Manali and Spiti valley by nearly 20 km, the drive time between the two places has now been reduced by over 2 hours. Manali town is one of the two — the second is Shimla — places to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

You need to follow Ambala-Zirakpur Expressway on National Highway(NH) 44 and Zirakpur to Shimla (111 km) on NH5 in Himachal Pradesh. Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on NH5. Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarter of Spiti valley.

Yes. The circuit is doable in October, though, the weather gets highly erratic — after September — in high altitude regions of Kinnaur, Spiti valley and Lahaul valley.

No. The Manali-Spiti route gets closed when thick layers of snow blankets the Kunzum pass in November/December. The traffic movement resumes only after March month.

Though the Manali to Spiti valley route gets closed — most often after November/early December till March — during winters, the Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Nako-Kaza road stays open even during wintertime. During long spells of snowfall, Shimla-Kaza road may get closed for a day or two. BRO team from Project Deepak and local administration employs dozers, snow cutters, and excavators to clear the snow and reopen the route after a spell of snow in the route. Ping us to get the latest road and connectivity updates.

Spiti Circuit (8N/9D): Unique Spiti Tour Itinerary with Road Map

What is Spiti Circuit?

Spiti Circuit is a road trip through beautiful roads of Shimla and Kinnaur into the desert mountain valley of Spiti in a full circuit. The circuit that starts and ends at Chandigarh is accessible through two routes:

1) Chandigarh-Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Kinnaur-Nako-Tabo-Kaza-Kunzum Pass-Manali 2) Chandigarh-Manali-Atal Tunnel-Kunzum Pass-Kaza-Tabo-Nako-Kinnaur-Shimla

Spiti is the land of monasteries and open landscapes preserved deep in the mighty Himalayas. The Spiti and Pin Rivers making their way through the desert mountain valley positioned northeast in the hilly state of Himachal. Spiti has entirely a different terrain as compared to its better half, Lahaul .

Spiti Valley Circuit Tour Package

Road to Spiti Valley

Note : The road connecting Kaza and Manali remains closed until mid-June at Kunzum Pass due to heavy snow. Hence, Spiti Circuit is doable only during the months of late June, July and September.

In April, May, early June, we can travel to Spiti via Shimla on NH05 (Shimla – Narkanda – Kinnaur – Kaza – Kinnaur – Narkanda – Shimla).

In August and October, we can do Spiti tour via Manali (Manali – Atal Tunnel – Chandratal Lake – Kaza – Manali).

Starting from Delhi/Chandigarh – the amazing Spiti Circuit Tour passes through Shivalik hills, lesser Himalayan ranges of Shimla, and rugged steep valleys of Greater and Trans-Himalayan ranges.

Before reaching Kaza (or Kaja) – the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, the Spiti Valley Circuit route offers a colorful panorama of landscapes and horizons.

In about 1,100 km long Spiti circuit, the extraterrestrial-looking landscapes of Spiti Valley stand in stark contrast to the rest of the Greater and Lesser Himalayan region.

The circuit that goes through the highs and lows of Kinnaur, Spiti and Kullu valleys offers travelers a chance to explore the recently inaugurated all-weather and all-season Atal Tunnel that reduces travel time between Manali and Kaza by around 3-4 hours and distance by over 35 km. Travel time between Kaza and Manali has now been reduced to about 6-7 hours, which earlier used to be 10-12 hours,

Spiti – a scarcely populated region abutting the Indo-Tibet border – is the land of monasteries, barren but beautiful mountains of dizzying heights, hospitable and super-friendly people.

The Spiti river cuts the region into two parts. Originating from Kunzum Ranges, the river drains the region before its confluence with the Sutlej River at Khab.

Apple Valley, Kotgarh

Apple Valley, Kotgarh

Starting from Delhi/Chandigarh in the morning, we will take you on a joyride on the Himalayan Express Highway of NH 05 into one of the most ecologically diverse and lavishly green valleys of Shivalik. From Parwanoo, the road route runs along the Kalka-Shimla Railway route – a UNESCO World Heritage site — that was built in the late 19th and early 20th century by the Britishers. Chandigarh-Shimla highway meanders through Shivalik forests of pine, deodar, and oak trees.  By noon, we reach the capital city, Shimla.  Here we’ll have lunch and unwind for a moment. We’ll resume the drive and reach Kotgarh by evening — our pit stop for the overnight stay. Dinner and overnight stay at a homestay amidst an orchard of apples and cherries.

Day 2: Kotgarh to Sangla (157 km, 6 hrs drive)

On the way to Sangla Valley

Why Spiti Valley Circuit Tour?

The first and foremost reason to do Spiti Circuit is to explore the valley of lamas and lakes inside out. The circuit has so much to offer that it leaves travelers spellbound and awestruck in the glory of the remote mystic valley.

Tabo Monastery Courtyard

Courtyard of Tabo Monastery

Snow-covered mountain ranges, open meadows, landscapes, glacial rivers, old monasteries, beautiful Himalayan lakes; the virgin beauty of Spiti valley is so heavenly that describing it in a few adjectives is a sheer understatement.

Spiti Valley circuit tour gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sip on the sweet waters of moon lake, drive to the highest motorable village – Komic, send back a postcard to your kin from the world’s highest post office at Hikkim, and learn about the local culture, people and their way of living.

Why Travel to Spiti from Shimla Side?

Talking about the most suitable route for Spiti Circuit, you can enter Spiti Valley from Shimla side and exit from Manali or vice versa. However, we recommend doing Spiti Circuit from Shimla side because the sequence of natural wonders is laid out so well that it keeps you intrigued until the journey culminates in the tourist mecca of Himachal – Manali.

Plus, gaining altitude gradually is the best way to beat breathing difficulties and hypoxia when traveling to high altitudes. In the Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti route, you steadily gain altitude while venturing into the cold desert of Spiti Valley.

Spiti Valley is a high-altitude plateau – the average elevation from mean sea level is 4270 m. Air in this barren cold desert is thin and people coming from the plains often feel breathing difficulties when they gain altitude quickly.

On the Shimla-Kinnaur-Kaza route, there is almost a linear ascent (barring Narkanda-Rampur descent) from Shimla (2276 m), Narkanda (2700 m), Kalpa (2960m) to Kaza (3800 m).

If you choose the Manali-Kaza route, there is a sharp ascent from 2000 m at Manali to about 4550 m at Kunzum Pass – that too within a drive time of about 4-5 hours.

Spiti Valley Weather & Best Time To Do Spiti Circuit

The Spiti Valley Circuit is doable during the months of late-June, July and September. Before mid-June and after September, Kunzum Pass gets closed due to snowfall.

The route only opens for the public in late June when BRO (Border Road Organisation) engages its snow-cutters to clear the snow.

Lower and middle ranges of the Himalayas receive heavy rainfall during monsoons. To avoid bad road conditions due to snow, heavy rains and landslides, late June, July and September are the best months to do Spiti Valley Circuit Tour.

The weather remains pleasant in Spiti during the Spiti Circuit time (late June-September). On a sunny day, maximum temperature may go as high as 25- 30 °C in the valley . However, the average temperature during the night may go as low as 3-5 ° C .

FAQs About Spiti Circuit Tour

Q: What is Spiti Circuit?

A: Spiti Circuit is a road trip through beautiful roads of Shimla and Kinnaur into the desert mountain valley of Spiti in a full circuit. The circuit that starts and ends at Chandigarh is accessible through two routes: 1) Chandigarh-Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Kinnaur-Nako-Tabo-Kaza-Kunzum Pass-Manali 2) Chandigarh-Manali-Atal Tunnel-Kunzum Pass-Kaza-Tabo-Nako-Kinnaur-Shimla

Q: What is the best time for Spiti Valley Circuit Tour?

A: The best time to go for the Spiti valley circuit tour is from late-June to September. The circuit route of Spiti Valley opens after BRO (Border Road Organisation) clears snow at Kunzum Pass in May. At 14,931 feet, Kunzum La is a mountain pass that connects Manali and Lahaul with Spiti Valley.

Sometimes, extended winters delay the snow clearing operation at Kunzum Pass. Therefore, the pass remains closed for vehicular traffic until mid-June.

Q: When does the Spiti Valley Circuit route open?

A: In late June. Though the route to Spiti Valley from Shimla remains open throughout the year, the Manali-Spiti-Manali route gets closed in October, November and stays so until mid-June as the road through the Kunzum Pass – the crossover between Lahaul and Spiti – gets buried in deep snow during winter months.

Q: Is this trip for me?

A: If you are crazily in love with the Himalayas, then this trip is for you. If you have never felt how driving through the world’s most treacherous road and standing on the world’s highest inhabited village feels like, then this trip is for you. Ear-deafening noise coming from furious Sutlej and Spiti Rivers and the calmness and beauty of Chandra Taal will get you high.

Q: What is the weather in Spiti Valley during summers?

A: The weather remains pleasant in Spiti Valley in the summers. The summer arrives late (in June) – in Spiti Valley and winters arrive early.

The average day temperature during summers hovers at around 15 degrees Celsius and the nights are cold (minimum temperature drops to 2-3 degrees Celsius).

The only mantra to enjoy this trip is to be well equipped. It’s perfectly fine to fill your bag with an extra pair of woolen socks, cap, and fleece.

Q: How to prepare for the Spiti Valley Circuit Trip?

A: Spiti Valley is a high-altitude Himalayan desert plateau. If you live in a city that is located near sea level altitude and you have never experienced a high altitude valley or terrain before, do take some time (a day or two) to acclimatize yourself either at Shimla or Manali. The acclimatization day is recommended though it is not necessary if you are in good shape.

To protect your skin from the harsh sunshine of the Spiti, carry an SPF 30+ sunscreen lotion, lip balm, and good quality UV protection sunglasses. For added protection, carry a scarf or bandana. The scarf/muffler will also save you from the piercing winds of Spiti Valley.

Q: How to reach Spiti Valley from Chandigarh?

A: From Chandigarh, there are two routes to reach Spiti Valley:

Q: How to reach Spiti Valley from Delhi?

A: Take National Highway 44 (NH 44) and Ambala-Chandigarh Express Highway to reach Chandigarh. From Chandigarh, there are two routes to choose from:

Q: How to reach Spiti Valley from Shimla?

A: From Shimla, you need to follow the Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Tapri-Khab route on National Highway 05 (NH 05) and Khab-Nako-Tabo-Kaza route on NH 505.

The distance from Shimla to Kaza is 420 km, and it takes about 12 hours to reach Kaza.

Q: How to reach Spiti Valley from Manali?

A: Spiti to Manali route is shorter than the Shimla to Kaza route. From Manali, you need to drive to Palchan (Solang Valley) and continue the drive towards Atal Tunnel. Drive through the 9 km-long Atal Tunnel and you will reach the north portal of the Atal Tunnel – Sissu in Lahaul Valley.

From the north portal of Atal Tunnel, continue to drive on the Manali-Leh highway. About 6 km after you cross the Koksar bridge, take a right turn and continue driving on NH 505 for 4 hours to reach Kaza – the central town of Spiti Valley.

Q: Why should I start the Spiti Valley Circuit from Shimla?

A: You gain altitude gradually when traveling from the Shimla side. This the best way to travel to beat AMS and breathing difficulties that you may face while in Spiti Valley. In the Manali-Kaza route, there is a sharp gain in altitude – from 2000 m to 4550 m – in a short interval.

Q: What are the highlights of Spiti Valley Circuit?

A: There is a long list of sightseeing places en route Spiti circuit. Here are a few of them:

  • Kotgarh (Apple Valley)
  • Sangla Valley
  • Chitkul (the last motorable village on the Indo-Tibetan border)
  • Kalpa (Kinnaur Valley)
  • Tabo Monastery
  • Dhankar Monastery
  • Ki Monastery
  • Remote Spiti villages (Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Gette)
  • Kunzum Pass (4550m)
  • Chandra Taal Lake
  • Atal Tunnel

Q: Can I bring my spouse/friend with me?

A:  Of course, you can. We will be visiting many beautiful villages, lakes, and monasteries during the course of our journey; which implies, we will be having a wonderful time during the trip.

Q: Is there any trekking involved in the trip?

A: No. All the destinations you are visiting are accessible by vehicle. At a couple of places, you might have to take short walks, but they cannot be categorized as treks. Anyone with a reasonable fitness level can do most of the activities during the trip.

Q: What is the maximum altitude we will hit?

A: 14,931 ft (4,551 m) at Kunzum Pass.

Q: What about the level of physical fitness?

A:  A person with reasonable fitness can join the group because there is no trekking involved throughout the trip. Still, it is always good to be fit when going to high altitudes.

Q: Does physical fitness protect against altitude sickness?

A:  As suggested it’s always good to be physically fit when you plan to go to high altitudes. But there is no evidence that people with high physical fitness levels don’t fall prey to AMS (acute mountain sickness). Rather they might challenge themselves to exert more, hence increasing the probability of becoming AMS victims.

Q: Can I drink alcohol at a high altitude?

A: Drinking alcohol at high altitudes is a practice you should avoid in all possibilities, because alcohol can obstruct your breathing, directly hampering the acclimatization process of your body. Furthermore, alcohol may cause dehydration.

Q: Should I take Diamox when going to high altitude?

A: There is no need to take Diamox until or unless your body has enough time for acclimatization. We have planned the trip in stages to offer your body sufficient time for acclimatization during the ascent. Hence taking drugs in the mountains need to be avoided. You should consider taking Diamox only if you are gaining altitude very quickly (flying to high altitude locations), that too only if you have no history of allergies to the drug.

chandigarh to lahaul spiti tour

Spiti Valley in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh is a cold desert mountain valley and is the land between Tibet and India. One of India’s coldest places, Spiti derives its popularity from its snow-covered mountains, heavy snowfall, trekking trails and monasteries. Holidify’s wide range of Spiti Valley tour packages are perfect for when you’re looking to plan a trip with friends or family. Spiti is well known for its Buddhist culture and is home to several monasteries like the Key Monastery, Dhankar Monastery, Kungri Monastery and Tabo Monastery. You would also find the Trilokinath Temple here. The crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake is a breathtaking sight and is a must-visit attraction in Spiti Valley, along with Suraj Tal.

Places to Visit in Spiti

Chandratal Lake: Chandratal Lake is often referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes located at an altitude of about 4300 m in the mighty Himalayas. This lake is also one of two high-altitude wetlands of India that have been designated as Ramsar sites. It is believed that the Chandratal Lake lies in the vicinity of a place from where God Indra's chariot picked up Yudhishthira, the eldest of Pandava brothers in Mahabharata. The colour of the water of this holy lake keeps changing from reddish to orange to blue to emerald green as the day ends.  Key Monastery: The Key Monastery is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Lahaul and Spiti District. Also known as the Kye Monastery and Ki Monastery, it is over a thousand years old and is also the largest monastery to be found in the entire Spiti Valley. The monastery enshrines Buddha idols in the Dhyana position and has a collection of ancient books and murals. Suraj Tal: Suraj Tal Lake is considered as the 3rd largest lake in India. Due to the belief that a dip in the Suraj Tal lake cleanses a person of his sins, it attracts a lot of people and is therefore considered spiritual. However, the major reason that the lake has gained popularity is that it comes en-route to the famous Manali-Leh path that is popular for trekking and biking trips, that also encompasses the Baralacha-La Pass on the way.  Baralacha La: The Baralacha La, also known as the Baralacha Pass, is a high mountain pass that is located at the height of 16,040 feet above the sea level. This 8 kilometres long pass connects the Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir and is located along the Leh-Manali highway. People who visit this pass also love to enjoy the trek from the Baralacha up to the Chandratal. The scenery and views here are breathtaking, and the barren land without any hotels and shops looks stunning.  Dhankar Monastery: Dhankar Monastery, also referred to as Dankhar, Drangkhar or Dhangkar Gompa, is perched unbelievably on the edge of a cliff and offers a panoramic view of Spiti valley. Built one thousand years ago on a 1000 feet high mountain and overlooking the heart-stirring sight of the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers, Dhankar Monastery is listed as one of the world's 100 most endangered monuments.  Kibber: Kibber, also known as Kyibar, is a small village located in the Spiti Valley. Surrounded by picturesque mountains and barren landscapes, Kibber boasts of being the highest village with a motorable road. The village is particularly famous for the local monastery and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. One can spend a day at the rest houses here, with the mountains watching over.  Tabo Monastery: The Tabo Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries located in the Tabo Village of Spiti Valley. In fact, it is the oldest monastery in India and the Himalayas that has been functioning continuously since its inception. This alluring monastery is renowned as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. This is because the walls of the monastery are decorated with fascinating murals and ancient paintings, much like the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra. Pin Valley National Park: The Pin Valley National Park is home to the rare species of famous Himalayan snow leopards and their prey, the Ibex. The National  Park is most famous for its incredible trek. It snows for the most part of the year rendering the trek a thrilling and adventurous expedition. There are also Siberian Ibex, Bharal, red fox, weasel and marten that call this place their home. While foreign nationals are not permitted here, Indian nationals need a permit to visit.

Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Chandigarh

Reach the pre-decided spot in Chandigarh where a representative will help you with the smooth transfers to the hotel. Check in to the hotel, rest for a while and go exploring the beautiful surroundings. You will then meet your road captain who will be leading the entire trip and will brief you about the terrain and will draw out a day-wise final plan. After the briefing, you can head for dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel in Chandigarh.

  • Themes : Mountaineering

Day 2 : Chandigarh to Narkanda

Start early to beat the traffic out of Chandigarh and head towards the Himalayas on the Himalayan Expressway. On the way, you will be passing through Chail, a hill station in the lower Himalayan range and home to beautiful flower orchards. After a short lunch break, you will head towards Narkanda, known as the fruit bowl of Himachal Pradesh. Apple and cherry trees line the roadsides and the tall Deodhar fir trees spread their sweet aroma all around. End the day after reaching the hotel in Narkanda.

Day 3 : Narkanda to Chitkul

Wake up early in the morning to experience one of the most beautiful sunrises. After a delicious breakfast, you will leave for one of the most beautiful views of Kinnaur Valley. Travel along the Sutlej river till Karcham from where you will take a right turn towards Chitkul following the Baspa river. Chitkul is the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border and here you can also visit the famous ‘Hindustan ka Akhri Dhaba’ for an amazing meal. Overnight stay and dinner at hotel/homestay in Chitkul.

Day 4 : Chitkul to Kalpa

After having a hearty breakfast, you will leave for Kalpa. You will be driving back towards Karcham from where you will proceed deeper into the valley towards Powari. At Powari take a left to ride to ReoKong Peo, which is the main town of Kinnaur district from where you will proceed to Kalpa. Spend the night in the beautiful Kalpa village overlooking the Kinnaur Kailash mountains. Overnight stay at camp/homestay in Kalpa.

Day 5 : Kalpa to Kaza

After early morning breakfast, you will be leaving for Kaza passing through the beautiful Spiti Valley. En route, you will be taking the Indo-Tiber Highway and pass through the Khab bridge that marks the confluence of Spiti and the Satluj River. Take a short stopover at Nako Lake and have lunch, after which you will be entering the Spiti Valley right as soon as you cross Sumdo. Just 3 Km after Sumdo, take a detour on the right through the gate to visit the 500-Year-Old Mummy in the Gue Village. You will then proceed towards Kaza where you will be spending the night at a hotel.

Day 6 : Sightseeing in Kaza

Post early morning breakfast, go out to explore the spectacular beauty of Kaza. Hikkim is a village in the Spiti district, close to Kaza which is one of the highest year-round inhabited locations in India. After exploring the beautiful villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komik, return back to your hotel in Kaza for an overnight stay.

Day 7 : Kaza to Chandratal Lake via Kunzum La

Post breakfast, you will proceed towards the next location which is the beautiful crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake. After passing Kunzum La you will take a right before Baltal to visit Chandratal Lake. The beauty of this place is spectacular and you will have to leave behind the vehicle and then trek for two kilometres to reach the lake. The lake is situated in the Spiti part of the Lahaul and Spiti district and is also called the “Moon Lake” due to its crescent shape. Day 01: Chandigarh to Narkanda (180 km | 5-6 hours|8891 feet) The adventurous Spiti Valley self-drive tour begins from Chandigarh, from where you drive to Narkanda. Situated at an altitude of almost 9000 feet, Narkanda commands majestic views of the snow line. This destination is also a favourite for thrill seekers, who want to try skiing or trekking. On reaching the destination, check-in at the hotel and sleep through the night.

Day 02: Narkanda to Sangla (160 km | 7-8 hours|8900 feet) After freshening up in the morning, embark on a 160-km road trip to Sangla. A small town on the banks of the Baspa River, Sangla is a picturesque and serene place. Many restaurants, cafes and accommodation options make it an apt stop on the way to the Spiti Valley. Spend the night at the campsite, under the starlit Ladakhi sky.

Day 03: Sangla – Nako – Geyu Mummy – Tabo (180 km | 8-9 hours|10760 feet) The next section of the Chandigarh Spiti Self Drive Trip  will take you to Tabo. On the way, make a small stop at Nako – a scenic hamlet – known for its namesake lake. Later, continue driving towards Geyu village, which has a 550-year-old mummy, and then head out to the town of Tabo. Positioned on the banks of the Spiti River, this lush town is like an oasis in the middle of the barren land of the Lahaul and Spiti district. The highlight of this place is the 10 th century Tabo Monastery, built by the revered Tibetan Buddhist, Rinchen Zangpo. On reaching the town, check-in at the hotel and rest for the night.

Day 04: Tabo – Dhankar – Lingti Valley – Pin Valley – Kaza (6-7 hours|11980) In the morning, pack your bags and head to Dhankar. Take a shortcut via Latilung and Rama village, to reach the Lingti Valley. Flanked by the soaring Himalayan peaks on all sides, Lingti Valley is an enchanting place. While here, click pictures against the backdrop of snow-clad mountains. Spend some time here, and then move to Pin Valley. Lying in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, the place is renowned for its diversity of flora and fauna. Snow leopard, red fox, Siberian ibex and marten, along with hundreds of plant species are found here. After capturing the mesmerising beauty of the valley in your cameras, transfer to the hotel in Kaza, on the banks of the Spiti River, and enjoy a relaxing sleep.

Day 05: Sightseeing around Kaza After having breakfast set out on an excursion to Langza and Komik. Langza, a small village in the heart of Spiti Valley, is known for the fossil reserves of marine creatures. These fossils date back to millions of years when the whole region was submerged under the Tethys Sea. Komik is one of the highest villages in Asia. It has only a few houses, and the major highlight of this place is its monastery. If you want, you can also drive to the small Hikkim village. It may look like any other establishment in the area, but what distinguishes it from the rest is the fact that it has the highest post office in the world. While here, you can send some postcards to your family, telling them about this amazing Spiti self-drive adventure trip. After lunch, pay a visit to Ki Monastery – the biggest Buddhist learning centre in the Spiti Valley. Originally built in the 11 th century, the gompa was once home to about 350 lamas. Also, visit Kibber, famed as the highest village in the world.  Thereafter, retreat to the hotel in Kaza and enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Day 06: River Rafting After breakfast, head out for an adventurous rafting experience on the Spiti River, only if weather permits. This will surely make your sojourn even more thrilling and exciting. The high rapids of the river will surely get the adrenaline pumping through your veins. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. You can use this time to go shopping in the local markets. Buy handicrafts and handlooms as perfect souvenirs for this journey. Thereafter, retreat to the hotel and enjoy an overnight sleep.

Day 07: Kaza to Chandratal (90 km | 4-5 hours|14100 feet) Relish a hearty meal in the morning, and later head to Chandratal. Often referred to as The Moon Lake, Chandratal derived its name from its crescent shape. Positioned at a height of over 14000 feet above sea level, this pristine lake looks even more charming in the backdrop of high mountain peaks. Spend your day admiring the beauty of the lake, and later move to the campsite to rest for the night.

Day 08: Chandratal to Manali (110 km | 6-7 hours|6726 feet) Savour a delicious meal in the morning and drive to Manali. In the evening, participate in a gala celebration that includes mouth-watering dinner along with handcrafted cocktails. It is the perfect way to end this memorable tour. Thereafter, sleep comfortably in your hotel room.

Day 4: Tabo

Tabo Monastery is more than 1000 years old and contains many priceless Thanka paintings and artifacts including Pillar of a Thousand Buddhas. This monastery is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The entry to monastery which is spread over 6300 square meters is made of earthen walls and covered with beautiful frescoes.   These paintings depict various lives of Buddha and stories from Jataka tales painted in typical Tibetan style. You can also visit nearby caves which are used by monks to meditate in solitude and introspection.

Day 5: Tabo – Dhankar – Lalung

Dhankar is about 3 hours drive away from Kaza and is also the ancient capital of Spiti and seat of Spitian Kings. There are ruins of an ancient castle and a monastery constructed in 16th century. It’s situated on top of a steep mountain ridge overlooking the valley. A walk to Dhankar lake takes about 90 minutes, We’ll then drive to Lalung village which is a small picturesque village inhabited by friendly and helpful villagers. Lalung monastery is famous for it’s statue of Three Cornered Buddha made with 3 sides to symblise Buddha looking in every direction.
