5 Different Routes To Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall

1. jeep safari from kulem.

Best time: Post-monsoon (October to May)

Foot of the waterfall during summer where you can take a dip

The most ideal way for large groups with family and kids to visit this place is to opt for a Jeep Safari at Kulem, which is organized by the Goa Forest Department from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. A maximum of 7 adults is allowed in each jeep which costs you Rs. 2800 for a single journey (which may vary depending on the season). Rs. 30 will be collected for the lifejacket and an entry fee of Rs. 50 for entering Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Rs. 30 is charged for a still camera and Rs. 250 for a professional camera.

The jeep will drop you close to the foot of the waterfall. It’s just a 1 Km walk from here. You can swim in the water pool for around 60-90 minutes and then return to the jeep.

Online booking of tickets for Dudhsagar Falls is now available. For details, check Goa Tourism to skip the queue during peak season.

Note: Jeep safari is not available during the rainy and monsoon seasons, as the route is slippery/muddy. It may resume in October depending on the rains.

2. From Castle Rock Railway Station, Karnataka

Best time: Monsoon (Mid July to October)

The most popular trekking route to the waterfall leads you to the railway track or the middle bridge which is in-between the waterfall. It is a 14 Km trek that takes around 5-6 hours one way. It has the most picturesque views of the Western Ghats and valleys with approximately 11 instagrammable tunnels. Be very careful while walking in those tunnels as trains may pass any time.

Instagrammable tunnels during the trek

After crossing the 13 th tunnel, there is a viewpoint of the Dudhsagar waterfall. We can’t say this enough but the view from here left us mesmerized and we just couldn’t get enough of it.

You will not be able to go to the bottom tier of the waterfall through this route.

Note: The Castle Rock trekking route is permanently closed due to mishaps and tragic incidents in recent years. One will be heavily fined by the railway police and is forced to go back if found trekking on this railway route.

3. From Kulem Railway Station, Goa

Side view of the top waterfall amidst greenness

The official trekking route is the Kulem- Dudhsagar route which is 11 km one way and takes approximately 3-4 hours. We trekked through this route. You need a compulsory guide to trek through this route.

The Best Local Guides

  • Vasu- +91 9823719079 (speaks Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi)
  • Lawrence- +91 7798080543 (speaks Hindi, Konkani)

Human bridge made by joining hands to cross water streams

This trek takes you to the bottom tier of the waterfall where you can click pictures of trains passing over the middle bridge from the front of the waterfall. Start as early as possible from the trek starting point, Kulem. Wear life jackets and start trekking to catch the sun’s golden light reflected from the tracks. Halfway along the route, you have to go down from the railroad to the jeep road. This road is closed for Jeeps during monsoon.

Alternatively, you can also walk to Sonaulim station to save 2 km on the mud route and cross the only tunnel in this trek route. Along your way, you’ll encounter the wild beauty of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park as you trek through the woods. You can also refill your water bottles while crossing small streams.

Cross bridges along the way and watch the massive flow of dudh from the viewpoint.

Bridge along the way in Kulem route

Beware of monkeys as they take away the munchkins or even bags from you. Start your return journey before 3 PM as the sun sets early during the monsoon.

4. From Kuveshi Village, Karnataka

Best time: Post Monsoon (November to February)

Top view of the waterfall during summer - kuveshi route

This is the most difficult but adventurous route that will lead you to the head and edge of the waterfall from where it plunges down into a pool of water. The trek starts from Kuveshi village which is 10 km from Castle Rock station. Take a cab to the village which has less than 50 families with no electricity and mobile signal. But the locals will guide you. You have to trek through the forest and cross the jungle canopy which is built by the locals about 30 feet high and for a distance of about 240 m. Directions are marked on poles that are quite visible along the route.

Note: You cannot take this route during the monsoon as you will have to cross the Mandovi River which is full and rough in the rains.

5. From Dudhsagar Railway Station, Goa

Best time: Monsoon, Post Monsoon (July- February)

Dudhsagar rail stop is not a station where passengers expect a platform. All trains crossing the waterfall will have a short 1-2-minute unscheduled stop at the Dudhsagar station. Passengers have to get down from the train in that short period. From this rail stop, visitors have to walk a km on the tracks crossing a 200 m dark train tunnel to reach the waterfall. On your way back, either trek or hop on a locomotive train and head off to Kulem or Castle Rock Station, which is not recommended though.

Dudhsagar railway station with no platform

Note: Indian Railways has banned people from getting down the trains at the Dudhsagar station and walking along the rail tracks as it is deemed too risky. During monsoon, railway police stand near the Dudhsagar station to ensure no one gets off the train. So, officially this route is not allowed.

Where To Stay?

There are only limited stay options available. Please check for WiFi and mobile network connections before booking. Some of our recommendations include Nature’s Nest Goa, Dudhsagar Spa Resort, Jungle Book/Jungle Cafe – closest to the waterfall, Dudhsagar plantation, The Farmhouse India, and Shangri La Jungle Resort.

Where To Eat?

Restaurants are very limited. But you can find eateries near Kulem station or the ticket counter. Stock some snacks but make sure to carry back the waste.

One restaurant closest to the Dudhsagar waterfall (8 km away) is the Jungle Book Cafe. The food here is served as a buffet and is decently priced. The cafe also serves juice/beer at an additional cost.

Other Places To Visit Nearby

Another adventurous place to trek is the Tambi Surla waterfall. However, this trek cannot be done on the same day.

In the last few years, the Dudhsagar waterfalls have become a popular weekend destination, especially for those travelling from cities like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore (all thanks to a certain Bollywood movie). Most tourists to Goa these days make the Dudhsagar waterfalls a part of their itinerary for Goa.

Because they are so huge, there are a number of ways to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls. They can also be visited from different location via different routes. All of these options can make planning a trip to the Dudhsagar waterfalls really confusing. If you’ve got just a weekend, you can’t afford to lose a day in a messed up travel plan. We hear you!

A picture speaks a thousand words. But even a thousand pictures fall short of what hit us when we first laid our eyes on these Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of Goa and Karnataka in India are four tiered waterfalls resembling a cascading fall of milk.

We have visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls twice:

  • By trekking over the railway tracks independently, in the monsoon
  • By taking a jeep safari tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

In this guide, we will address all the issues we faced while visiting these waterfalls.

There are three different ways of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls:

  • Trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – most popular in the monsoon months (June to September). Jump directly to this part .
  • Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – starts post-monsoon (typically operates from October end to May). Jeep safaris for 2019 have already started. Jump directly to this part .
  • A third not so popular way of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls – for seasoned trekkers.

The Dudhsagar waterfalls ( Dudh : milk, Sagar : sea) are located on the Goa-Karnataka border. They are part of the Western Ghats – a mountain range in Southwest India.

It is a four-tiered waterfall with different ways to reach each level. The mountains from which the Dudhsagar waterfalls emerge are in Karnataka and the forest in which they fall is in Goa.

Kulem is the last station for the passenger train.
  • The direct trains from Bangalore to Castle Rock ( Yesvantpur Vasco da Gama Express / Velankanni Vasco da Gama Express / Chennai Central Vasco da Gama Weekly) do not run daily.

Your mode of transport primarily depends on whether you want to trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls or take the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • In Goa, your trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls will start by climbing up the railway tracks from Kulem. You will climb up the Braganza ghat, crossing several tunnels and reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The trekking distance from Kulem to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is 11 km . It is a slightly uphill walk.
  • If you start in Karnataka, you will trek over the railway tracks from Castle Rock. The trekking distance from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is roughly 14 km .

Tunnels on the railway tracks on the way to the Ddudhsagar waterfalls

Start of the trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

It’s fun walking through this section of the railway tracks in the middle of the forest through numerous tunnels. But you have to be mindful the whole while to the sound of approaching trains. By trekking over the railway tracks, you reach the middle tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

The railway tracks trace a horseshoe (U) over the valley approaching the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The first glimpse of the waterfalls is, hence, from across the valley.

Our guide knew the exact point at which we would see the waterfalls. When the train got there, he started shouting “camera ready, viewpoint, viewpoint”.

We readied our cameras. The train slowly (and extremely steadily) approached the viewpoint – and we froze. We just couldn’t take our eyes off the majestic Dudhsagar waterfalls. At that moment, we couldn’t care about the camera, the photograph, the viewpoint or anything else.

The Dudhsagar waterfalls, even from that far across the valley, had hypnotised us.

The milk like water of the Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of the states Goa and Karnataka in India.

Trekking to the pool at the base of Dudhsagar waterfalls

At this point, you can trek down from the tracks into the forest of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Companies which offer trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls, often take this route. Through the forest, you reach the bottom tier of these waterfalls. You can return to Kulem via the forest route.

Important point note: This trekking option is not available in the monsoon. The Mandovi river, over which the Dudhsagar waterfalls are located swells in the monsoon and flow with an enormous force.

Walking on the railway tracks at the Dudhsagar waterfalls

You can combine trek and travel by train to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • Dudhsagar Railway station is part of the Southwest Railway division of the Indian Railways. Passenger trains do not stop at Dudhsagar railway station. There is no platform here. You can get off the train only if the train gets a signal at Dudhsagar. You will then need to climb down the ladder and jump onto the ground. Words of caution: You need to be fit enough to jump off the train directly on the railway tracks. Travelling with babies or dependent seniors is a strict no-no.
  • If you manage to get off at the Dudhsagar railway station, you will have to walk back for around 1 km to reach the waterfalls. Be warned: Boarding and deboarding at the Dudhsagar railway station are officially not allowed by the Railway Police.
  • If you take the Amravati Express or the Vasco Kulem passenger in the morning, you can easily return to Madgaon by boarding the Amravati Express from Sonalium ( doesn’t operate on Sundays ).

Our journey to Dudhsagar waterfalls

We travelled on a passenger train from Madgaon to Kulem. At Kulem, we boarded a goods train. Some local guys agreed to be our guides and fixed us up with the motorman of the train that was going to leave soon. We stood on the edge holding onto the railing outside the engine of the goods train. Travelling up the steep Braganza pass on the seamless tracks through a lush green forest in a rhythmic motion, with the wind in our faces, we felt one with nature!

From a distance, it looks like the surroundings of the Dudhsagar waterfalls are covered in clouds. It is actually just the spray from the waterfalls. Its momentum is so strong, it actually crosses over to the other side of the railway tracks. We had to put our camera away to prevent it from being sprayed over.

A tree stands leafless in the spray of the Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of Goa and Karnataka in India.

Rules about trekking to Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks

Before we go ahead, read this: Walking on the railway tracks is banned by the Railway Police. You are officially not allowed to access the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks.

Since the ban was put in place, we have received contradictory feedback from our readers who visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls individually. While some managed to easily walk over the railway tracks, others were stopped by the Railway Police and forced to turn back. We have also heard narrations of Railway Police standing near the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon and ensuring no one gets off the train.

When we travelled to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by the goods train, the ban was NOT in place and we did not face any problems.

If you are planning a self-organised trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, there will be some uncertainty.

Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

Map of the route to dudhsagar waterfalls by jeep safari.

A jeep safari through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is the recommended and the officially permitted way to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Why we chose a tour to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls by jeep safari?

“Jeeps cross several streams through a dense forest”, we had heard of the drive to the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This line had stayed with us ever since.

To visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls along this route via the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, we had to first reach Kulem. It’s a roughly 2-hr drive of around 80 km from Baga/Calangute to Kulem.

Once you cross the bridge to Panaji and take the road to Ponda, the winding road starts. It’s a beautiful forested route, through the hilly villages of Goa. This isn’t your typical landscape of Goa of the sand and waves.

We didn’t feel like venturing on such a long undulating route on a bike. And it’s a well-known fact that cabs can be prohibitively expensive in Goa. We felt it made sense to sign up for a jeep safari tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls.

What all did our tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls include?

  • Pick up and drop right our hotel on the Baga-Calangute road in North Goa
  • Tickets to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – cost of the jeep safari and life jacket (which is compulsory). We had to pay separate camera charges at the gate of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Local Goan lunch at a spice plantation
  • Sightseeing in old Goa

It was a good deal, freeing up our time to soak in the sights of Goa we weren’t familiar with.

The driver called us the previous night to confirm the pickup location and time. On the day of our jeep safari, we received another call from the driver ten minutes prior to our pick up time, to ask if we were ready. Promptly at 6 AM, we were picked up from the Baga-Calangute road, 2 minutes away from our Hotel Santiago Resort . We were impressed with this promptness of service, right at the start.

The jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls starts at Kulem

Reaching kulem before the jeep safari starts.

Everything about Kulem suggests that it has been woken up from its long hibernation by the sudden fame of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Otherwise, it’s one of those little villages that minds its own business.

Because Kulem is at the base of the Braganza ghat, long-distance trains have to halt at this railway station to attach an additional locomotive to pull them up towards the Dudhsagar waterfalls and further up to Castle Rock in Karnataka.

These days you see a series of breakfast joints no bigger than holes in walls but overflowing with tourists – both Indian and international. Our minibus dropped us at the parking lot in Kulem from where we walked to the Dudhsagar taxi stand (just outside the Kulem railway station). While we had our breakfast (does the needful but don’t expect anything much), our driver cum tour guide went ahead to sort out our jeep tickets.

“Refreshment

The ticket counter for the jeep safari in Kulem

The jeep safari for Dudhsagar waterfalls starts from the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Kulem. These jeep safaris are organised by the Goa Forest Department. They take you to the bottom of the waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

If you have driven down to Kulem, you can park your vehicle in the parking lot which is a 2-minute walk from the Kulem jeep safari ticket counter. The Kulem railway station is also not more than 5 minutes away.

Not surprisingly (this is India after all!), chaos reigned at the taxi stand. It was a huge relief having someone take care of these logistics for us and not having to scamper in the unruly semblance of a queue. Instead, we busied ourselves in some people watching. Some excited, other restless, everyone waiting. Some local grocery stores were opening up. Only in Goa, you have a grocery store clubbed in with a “wine shop”!

Meanwhile, our driver had split us into groups of seven. And instructed us, repeatedly, to not disperse. “If the group is not together, there will be grave problems”. We appreciated that he was taking his responsibility to send us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls so seriously. After around 30 minutes, we were finally seated in our jeeps to take us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

If you aren’t taking a tour for the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls…

We recommend you reach the ticket counter at Kulem as early as you can.

What’s the hurry? Allow us to explain.

  • The charge for a jeep to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, which seats 7, is Rs. 2800. If you aren’t a group of seven, you’ll have to form a group with other solo travellers or smaller groups. It is not advisable to go to the jeep safari ticket counter without a pre-formed group. The staff here doesn’t help you with group formation.
  • Chaos looms here in the group formation stage. This was one of the main reasons we were happy to have taken a tour of the Dudhsagar waterfalls since our driver cum guide took care of all these logistics.
  • The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM. To make sure that all vehicles and tourists are out of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary by this time, they stop the sale of tickets by roughly 2 PM.
  • Dudhsagar waterfalls are no longer just a weekend destination. People vacationing in Goa also visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls these days. International tourists make a huge chunk of the visitors. This popularity of the Dudhsagar waterfalls means that there is quite a rush for the jeep safari even on a weekday.

Your best chances of a peaceful visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls are by reaching the ticket counter at Kulem at the earliest. We would recommend being there by 9 AM.

If you are committed to being among the first ones to enter the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to have the Dudhsagar waterfalls all to yourself, we recommend staying somewhere closer to Kulem.

The total ticket for the jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls is:

  • Cost of the jeep safari – Rs.2800 per jeep, seats 7
  • Rent for the life jacket (compulsory) – Rs. 30
  • Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary entry fee – Rs. 50
  • Additional charges for the camera.

Inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary on a jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls

The dirt track starts right after we left the Kulem taxi stand. An arc saying Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary welcomes you in. The jeeps halt here to pay the sanctuary entry fees. This is also where you pay the camera fees.

Interestingly, among the list of attractions listed by the forest department, “Nature all through the route” makes an appearance! The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a plastic-free zone. Our jeep driver asked us if we had any plastic bottles with us. You have to report the count here and on the way back they ensure you’re carrying them all out. Do not leave any plastic objects behind, at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

“Inside

We were now in a dense forest. This is part of the western ghats is mostly evergreen. We were just settling into the unsettling feel of the rickety drive when we were faced with a huge river. Our driver deftly drove the jeep through this water body without even a slight flinch. The seven of us were, however, holding onto the seats in front, as if our lives depended on it.

This route to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls opens only in October after the monsoon ends. The river was swollen enough to give us goosebumps even as the water levels had started receding. We shuddered to think what it would look like in the monsoon!

A few locals take tourists on bike rides through the sanctuary to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon. The forest department doesn’t officially approve of this. And after seeing the might of the river in late November, we do not recommend venturing out in the rains to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

The dirt track continued with the Dudhsagar river now flowing to our left. We were driving through the stillness of the forest now. It was late morning, around 10 AM. The birds had retreated. The mild breeze rustled some leaves. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the end of the motorable track. We saw a temple towards the end and a tribal settlement of a handful of huts. We were surprised that someone actually lived here inside the forest.

“Dudhsagar

The driver now gave us the life jackets (these are compulsory) and told us to be back in an hour. There’s a watchtower here which gave us the complete view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. But this time we were more interested in being in its waters at the waterfall’s base pool.

The walk through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A flight of steps took us to the floor of the forest and we began our 15-20 minute walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. It’s a rocky uneven patch. The rocks can be slippery, so appropriate footwear is recommended. It’s an easy walk and anyone with moderate fitness can easily reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. However, it is not suitable for those needing wheelchair assistance.

“Monkey

Playful monkeys gave us company throughout the walk. By now, they are quite used to having humans around. They might even give you a nice pose for your picture, but please do not feed them . They live in their natural habitat, the forest, and are smart enough to gather their own food, without human assistance. Let’s not ruin that pleasure for them by introducing them to the evils of chips and the likes.

We crossed a small wooden flat bridge and got the view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls cascading down. The railway bridge is clearly visible.

The pool at the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

We made our way through the rocks, found a safe (and dry) place to keep our shoes, tucked our camera bag under a bigger rock and stepped into the water. The freshness of the cold water at the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls hit us like a bolt.

From within the pool, only the bottommost tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls is seen. This itself can qualify as a nice big waterfall to chill under. The pool is safe to swim and you can reasonably easily reach under the waterfall. Even with the sun above our heads, the water, however, is pretty cold! The water is also clear enough to see several mid-sized fish swimming in.

“Sandeepa

The force of the waterfall in the monsoon is prohibitively massive to feel anything other than the spray of its water at a distance of several meters. We were delighted that we had finally stepped foot in the waters of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. We spent a long while soaking in the natural pool.

dudhsagar waterfall trip in goa gth

It struck us after a while that none of our co-passengers on this tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls could be seen around. We had lost track of time and imagined our jeep driver fuming with rage at our delay. We got into dry clothes (changed at a pretty sketchy arrangement, right there on the rocks) and ran through the rocks and forest.

The driver smiled as he saw us run. He probably was used to his passengers losing track of time at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. He knew the time wasn’t enough. But he had to stick to the schedule to enable smooth functioning of the Dudhsagar jeep safari tours. We took the same route out, through the dirt track and the Dudhsagar river.

Tips for going on a jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • You have to reach the ticket counter for the jeep safari in Kulem early in the morning.
  • We started from North Goa at 6 AM. By the time we entered the sanctuary, some jeeps were already returning back from the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM and tickets are not sold after roughly 2 PM.
  • It’s best to have a pre-decided group of 7 before you buy your tickets so you don’t waste time waiting for your jeep to fill in.
  • To avoid all this logistical management, we are glad we pre-booked our jeep safari tour for the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Wear comfortable footwear on this journey as it involves a 15-20 minutes walk through the rocky forest patch.
  • Life jackets are compulsory and should be worn before entering the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Women can feel free to wear a swimming costume inside the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Sketchy changing facilities do exist near the pool.
  • Toilets are available inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Their cleanliness is a whole other topic, but the facility exists.
  • Locker facilities are not available. If you need to take a camera, it’s security and safety (keeping it dry) is entirely your responsibility.

Lunch at a spice plantation and visiting parts of old Goa after the jeep safari

All the swimming and adventure of the river crossings meant our bellies were all fired up. We drove to a spice plantation that seemed hidden in the forest. A quick tour through the plantation and introduction to the spice trees later, we attacked the lunch spread. Fried mackerel, chicken curry and of course, the Goan feni were waiting for us.

Our return journey took us through the quarters of old Goa, stopping at a few churches. We reached our hotel in North Goa just in time to enjoy an orange streaked sunset at the Baga beach .

Trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

The Youth Hostel Association of India organises an 8-day trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The expedition starts at Panaji. You trek up to the village of Kuveshi via the Dudhsagar waterfalls. This expedition includes a trek to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well.

What else is to see in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary besides the Dudhsagar waterfalls?

  • While there are several smaller waterfalls particularly just after the monsoon, another bigger waterfall is the Tambdi Surla.
  • It is within the Mollem National Park of which the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a part. However, it is far from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and clubbing the two waterfalls in a day will not be possible.
  • Another interesting feature inside the sanctuary and actually close to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is the Devil’s Canyon. Even though it is en route, having a strict schedule means that your jeep driver will not halt at the Devil’s Canyon.
  • We recommend hiring a local guide and planning a separate visit than the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The guide can take you to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well as the Devil’s Canyon.

Map to the Tambdi Surla waterfall

Where can you stay to explore the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Mollem National Park?

There are a few eco-resorts between Mollem and Kulem which are a perfect place to stay if you want to take your time exploring the Mollem National Park. Most of these are located midway to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Tambdi Surla waterfalls.

Some options to stay are

  • Nature’s Nest : A perfect spot for those into birding. Day trips to Dudhsagar and Tambdi Surla waterfalls are easily possible. A place to disconnect from the world, no Wifi and mobile phone network can be a problem in these hills.
  • Jungle Book : A unique little stay option. Excursions into the National Park are easily possible. These are nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Dudhsagar Farmstay : You can while away your time within this property (Wifi and a natural water swimming pool!), this place is also equidistant from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and Tambdi Surla.

Castle Rock – a dreamy hamlet ahead of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls should not end with just a visit to the waterfalls. Because further ahead is Castle Rock, a town that looks like it’s emerged straight out of a storybook. Where goods trains are the most common mode of transport. And the locals seem unaware of the hidden gems their town (hamlet, really!) has to offer.

The name “Castle Rock” was inviting enough and a 30-40 minute train ride ahead got us there. When we got off the train at Castle Rock, the station master there was surprised. He assumed we were there by mistake. He vehemently insisted there was nothing to see in Castle Rock and asked us to leave for Dudhsagar waterfalls!

Castle Rock railway station in Karnataka, ahead of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

Castle Rock was a sleepy little hill town. The Castle Rock railway station seemed to be the only reason the town existed. All the infrastructure belonged to the Indian Railways and being a Sunday, everything was shut. Apart from these railway buildings, the place is a small village. Families keep poultry at homes and they cook in wood-fired stoves.

castle Rock Adventure Camp

It felt like we were part of a story, wandering around in a magical land in search of a treasure. And sure enough, we found one, in the form of a board saying “Castle Rock Adventure Camp” run by the Karnataka government. “Discover a new trail every time” was their charming tagline!

We followed the tree-lined misty trail. It eventually led us to the fully functional campsite – that apparently no one knew about!

castle_rock_cabin

There were a couple of cabins for stay, each equipped with 12 bunk beds. The outdoor seating and dining arrangements were at the perfect vantage points. We even met the trained staff, who took care of food and security.

On that cold misty afternoon, it looked really picturesque. Had we known of this place earlier, we would have definitely planned to stay here for a night at least, after our visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Visit to the Spice Plantations near Dudhsagar waterfalls

The cool temperatures on these hills of the western ghats mean that the weather here is conducive to grow spices. After your jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, you can have lunch at one of the many spice plantations in the vicinity. These plantations often organise a tour of the spice garden followed by a Goan lunch, a taste of the famous drink of Goa, the feni , included. You can also buy some farm fresh spices from these spice plantations.

nice places to visit..

After researching a lot on the web, last year I visited Dudh sagar falls passing by through train from Madgaon to Castle Rock (Vasco Howrah Exp – 18048, De. 07:50 Ar. 09:20) and return from Castle Rock to Badhaon (KCG Vasco Exp – 17603 De. 11:30 Ar. 13:55) on Thursday because you have a proper passenger train only on Thursday both up and down to get you through the Dudhsagar Falls. You should not depend on Freight trains as their timetable is not fixed. I also had an option of trek from Kulem to Dudhsagar but my hard luck, none of my friends agreed. However you should keep all trecking clothes, shoes and abandunt water with you, for this I have a number Mr. PURUSHOTTAM 8975745140. It was good luck that the railway track was open because a day before I visited there happened a landslide and the work was in progress.

which time of the year did you visit the falls? Is it monsoons or before/after the monsoons?

' src=

Wonderful write-up Thanks a lot, I believe that Indian Railways is missing a trick by not allowing tourists to use a train facility officially to visit DudhSagar Waterfalls… But that as they say is another story !

@srujan 23 rd August last year.

' src=

I am travelling to goa the weekend of 27th and 28th of july 2019 want to know if we can go to dudh sagar falls or not.. we have booked the train from madgaon to kulem and then from kulem to londa.. kindly suggest

' src=

Hey Hi.. We are also visiting goa from 26.07.19 to 29.07.19. We want to visit dudhsagar falls… I have a feeling that its banned. Let me know if you are still planning to visit..

' src=

Which route did u took? Can walk down from castle rock?

I am going to Goa this week and really want to visit dudhsagar falls, any guidance for railway trek, is it allowed nowadays?

' src=

absolutely loved the story. i plan to visit there next week. need to know whether the rail trek is really possible now and is it safe?. can you help me? expecting a reply soon. thank you.

' src=

We will visit this june 16 th.Can we go there during that time from goa? Will it be closed? or dry?

' src=

Great post. I had visited the falls in May 2013 via the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and I am planning to visit again this May end. However, this time, I would like to take the train route from Madgaon. Can you tell us whether walking on the tracks are allowed / will be allowed in May this year? Also, which would be the closest station to the falls from where we can enjoy a good view as well as find a place to sit and have packed lunch? Lastly, how would the return journey to Madgaon be and from where can we make arrangements to board a train?

' src=

We are planning to visit Dudhsagar in April-18 and grill barbecue. Is cooking allowed near the waterfall?

' src=

The Dudhsagar waterfalls are inside a wildlife sanctuary and we are pretty certain barbecues aren’t officially allowed. Even if there weren’t any official rules about this, a barbecue inside a wildlife sanctuary is something we would NOT RECOMMEND.

' src=

Is trekking along tracks open now. We are planning to go there on 7th Jan 2k18 from Bangalore and get down at castle Rock through Vasco Da Gama express. Is trains available to return back to castle Rock.

Walking on the railway tracks is officially banned. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. Tickets are available at Kulem, at the taxi stand outside the railway station.

' src=

What is the distance from Sonalium station to Dudhsagar bridge by walking and can I get train to Sonalium from Goa ? Also please advose currently can we see good fall, I am planning to go there on 25th November.

It is a leisure 40-minute walk from Sonalium to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. If you are allowed to get on the railway track, you can board a train from Sonalium to get back to Madgaon (that’s what we had done). Another alternative is going through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary by buying the tickets in Kulem. The waterfalls in November will be much reduced than in the monsoon, but the drive in the forest and the lower part of the falls where you can also dip in the waters is fantastic.

' src=

Is there locker facility and Cloak rooms available near dudhsagar falls?

' src=

Locker facility is not available here. You’ll have to leave everything in the car. Even plastic is banned beyond 4WD taxi stand.

' src=

Hi All, We are planning to go to visit dudhsagar falls around September mid-end 2017 from pune. Only option seems feasible is train & then walk. Does anyone know whether Goa express stops at dudhsagar or sonalium station? Also, as an alternate, whether to walk till falls from kulem or castle rock?

Thanks, Rajneesh

Our contacts at Dudhsagar have told us that this year the railway police have banned people from walking on the tracks. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls by accessing the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary from Kulem.

' src=

May I know whether car parking is available in Kulem or not

It should be available at the Kulem railway station.

' src=

Thanks Ashique, I am from Bangalore and as Castle Rock comes first in my route choose that and aslo trek from here was more adventurous. However now I have to change my plans to start from Kolem.

' src=

Such a nice blog … so much information about doodhsagar …. guys I m planning to visit this Aug’17 by railway track …. I m planning to catch a train from madgaon to kollem or sonalium and from there I will walk through the railway tracks to doodhsagar …. I have just one query … after reaching kollem or sonalium, whether I will be permitted to walk through the tracks or not ?? some of the below post I ve seen that, CRPF is not allowing to walk through the tracks … do u ve this information, what is current situation over there ? …. I just don’t want to get disappointed after reaching there.

Hey Rupam, the railway police have been closing the track for walking every monsoon. But you will know the exact situation only closer to your date. We suggest you touch base again in the monsoon and we will update you about the situation after talking to our local contacts there.

' src=

So did u guys were able to trek to dudhsagar? We are also planning n it will be helpful if u can share ur experience

' src=

When did you go to. Dudhsagar? As far as I know approaching the falls is banned now

Hello Muniraj, yes – the railway police had banned the access tot he Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks for security reasons. But we have been told that post monsoon, it will be opened again.

' src=

I would like to know if November the falls would run dry and doesn’t make sense to go there?? Completely understand the monsoons is the best time but unable to go now and looking at your pictures want to see it soon.

November is a good time to see the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Esp this year, since the monsoon has been great and falls are in full flow!

' src=

Beautiful falls. Looks like you went there at the peak season. Thanks for the travel tips.

' src=

This is so amazing! The photos and description give an immediate need to visit the place. This looks really special 🙂

' src=

Ah! Too bad it’s off limit now. We were turned back from Caranzole.

You have captured the gorgeous falls wonderfully!

' src=

This is really wonderful, I love to visit this place. India has a lot of camping places and these places shown in the picture are really amazing for camping. every place in this picture is wonderful. I love your blog.

' src=

Awesome pictures..Very well captured.. !

' src=

beautiful falls and you’ve captured them well 🙂

' src=

Beautiful. No wonder it’s called majestic.

We have no idea about any cottage or accommodation near Kulem. Your best bet for finding information regarding this would be to contact the forest department’s office there and ask. We do not have the numbers however. Wish you a happy travel experience to the Dushsagar waterfalls!

' src=

Hello Guys,

Please let me know how can I reach Dudhsagar from Mumbai by train.

' src=

Take 11029 mumbai-kolhaur Koyna Exp get down at pune. You have other train at 16:30 from pune 12780 NZM-VSG GOA Exp which reach Dudhsagar Waterfall cabin at 03:30 next morning

Is this an only way to reach Dudhsagar from Mumbai? I have been told that Amravati Express too passes somewhere near from Dudhsagar. Do you have any idea about it?

Hello Swapnil, monsoon is the best time to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls. You can take the goods train from either Kulem or Castle Rock (depending on whether you are traveling from Goa or KArnatake respectively) and get off at an earlier signal to avoid too much trekking and yet experience some adventure. Rains should not hamper your visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by train.

Hello Swapnil

Wish you a great travel to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. There is probably a canteen at the Kulem railway station. However it doesnt open early in the morning. More food options are available only at Madgaon on the Goa side of the Braganza ghat. We recommend carrying food supplies from there on the way to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and not relying on food options on the way.

' src=

Hello Sandeepa and Chetan,

I wanted to know where can I get the details about the “Castle Rock Adventure Camp” run by the Karnataka government. Is http://www.ecotrails.in , the appropriate website for it? Let me know whatever information you may have about it. Thank you and Happy travelling to you both!

Love, Gaurangi

Hello Gaurangi, this is the link to the adventure resort we saw in Castle Rock. http://www.indiatourismecatalog.com/india_states_travel_guide/karnataka/karnataka_wild_jungle_camps_trails.html If this isnt helpful, try these options which is a friend suggested. There is a Dilip SHinde guest house, very close to the Castle Rock railway station gate. Else, there is a PWD guest house. You can try to contact the caretaker, Prakash at 9535552603. Wish you a great travel to the Dudhsagar water falls and Castle Rock.

Hello Ankur, yes tickets are available for Kulem from Madgaon. An alternate way to get to Dudhsagar waterfalls from Kulem is to walk through the railway tracks over Braganza ghats. On weekends in monsoon, you will find groups doing this. There might be passenger trains going up at your time which can halt at Sonalium. From there its only a short walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

' src=

Friend, you have written that take a Railway train like Amravati Express and get off at Sonalium. But when we saw the railway timetable, there is no stop at Sonalium for Amravati Express. I want to know whether the train Amaravati express really stops at Sonalium so that we can get down at Sonalium and trek to Doodhsagar. Kindly clarify, thank you.

Hello K N Nagaraja, the station Sonalium is probably not mentioned because Sonalium is not a full fledged station. You can not but ticket at Sonalium. When we boarded at Sonalium on the way back from the waterfalls, we bought the tickets for the journey at Kulem.

' src=

Thanks for such valuable info… i will be coming from HYD…Getting down at castle rock..then walk or goods train to falls… but while coming back.. what is best route… from falls to kulem to hyd? or falls to londa stn to hyd? how much is distance upto londa stn from falls and how to get there?..or any other best route, pls suggest… thanks and regards, parag

Hello Parag, we saw a lot of families on a day picnic traveling to and fro from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls in a goods train. If you intend to go back to Hyd from the Dudhsagar waterfalls (and not go towards Madgaon), then there is no point going towards Kulem. Stay on the Karnataka side of Dudhsagar.

' src=

Is tickets for kulem is available at madgaon railway station? and what is alternate way to reach falls from kulem other than goods train?and what for return?

It is possible. You trek through the forest, cross the railway track and trek up mountains to Kuveshi. Have a look here for one such trek http://travelnew.tumblr.com/post/107399990600/goa-beach-forest-trek-on-new-year-eve

Thank you for the reference (came across this while surfing) 😀

Haha…cool!

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – Everything you need to know

Dudhsagar waterfalls (Dudh – Milk, Sagar – Sea; literally Sea of   Milk) is a 4-tiered waterfall located in the Indian state of Goa. While Goa is famous for its beautiful beaches, there are a number of interesting but unexplored quirky places to visit in Goa. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Goa. After the filming scenes of the famous Bollywood movie “Chennai Express” at Dudhsagar waterfalls, it has become very popular and is often on the list of tourists who want to visit unconventional Goa. Considered to be among the highest waterfalls in India, Dudhsagar waterfalls are particularly unique and spectacular due to a railway track running through the center of the falls.

The Dudhsagar waterfalls

The three streams, the four-tiered waterfall is the fifth tallest waterfall in India with a staggering 600 meters high in its attribute. Accessible only by train or on foot, Dudhsagar is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled pieces of nature’s collection. The first sight of the milky-white waterfalls can fascinate even the most terrible people. It’s as surreal as a water oasis, right in the middle of the Thar desert. Dotted with rich greenery on all sides, here only enthusiastic and enthusiastic ecotourists will be your companions. Other times, the local villagers will charm you with their insight and warmth. Most of the time, Indian macaques try to make friends with you.

The train platform is the perfect viewpoint to appreciate this magnificence. And the view is splendid, as the steam rising from the exuberant gushing water forms a painting of clouds descending to witness the towering waterfalls. You can see a good 200m down the slope and green lake at the delightful Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 100m further down the trail. The water foam at the base of the falls gives an ethereal aura. The green puddle is a good place for a picnic where you can swim and have a fun day with your family and friends.

The tales say that there was a beautiful princess who loved to bathe in a lake near her home, currently Dudhsagar. In his bath ritual, he was given that he would finish his bath with a sweetened milk drink in his golden cup. One fine day, while she was bathing in the lake, she noticed a charming prince who was watching her from afar. He immediately poured the milk into the water to prevent him from seeing through the crystal clear water of the lake. It is said to be his jug of milk that flows incessantly in the streams of the waterfall, hence the name “Dudh’sagar waterfall”. Until now, nothing has managed to take away the pristine whiteness of autumn. It is said to mean the virtue and modesty of that princess, to this day.

Panjim to Dudhsagar Waterfalls

In Goa, Dudhsagar waterfalls are located on the eastern side of the state at the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary among the Western Ghats in front of a town called Collem or Kulem. Dudhsagar waterfall forms the border between the states of Karnataka and Goa and is located in the middle of a dense forest area. Kulem is 66 kilometers from Panjim or 36 kilometers from Margao to the east. You can reach Kulem by road or take a train from Margao. If you are coming from the Bangalore side, you can get to Castlerock, which is about 500 kilometers from Bangalore.

The Dudhsagar Waterfalls Course

Dudhsagar waterfalls emerge from the Braganza Ghats of the Indian state of Karnataka. In Goa, it falls from a mountain cliff that is part of the Western Ghats (a mountain range in southwestern India). From the base of the falls it forms the Dudhsagar River which flows west into the state of Goa to join the Mahadayi River in the Karmane District. Further west, it joins the Mandovi River in the Ponda district and eventually flows into the Arabian Sea at Panjim, the state capital of Goa.

Some facts about Dudhsagar Waterfalls

  • Dudhsagar waterfalls are considered to be one of the highest waterfalls in India. It falls from a height of 1020 feet and is about 100 feet wide.
  • Dudhsagar waterfalls peak in flow during the monsoon season (June to September). As the waterfall feeds on rain, it forms a huge force of water during the monsoon. However, in the summer season (March to June) the flow slows down and the falls are not particularly spectacular.

Viewpoints around Dudhsagar Waterfalls

There are two points to see the Dudhsagar waterfall:

  • Dudhsagar Railway Bridge: You can cross the Dudhsagar Railway Bridge. Here, you’ll get the zoomed-in view of the fall where one part will be above you and other parts below will flow from behind the bridge. You’ll also get a view of the falls for a few seconds if you’re aboard a train to Madgaon in Goa. Passenger trains generally do not stop at the Dudhsagar level crossing.
  • Base of Dudhsagar waterfalls: Here, you walk to the base of the waterfall and you can see the whole fall from top to bottom. This is where the Dudhsagar River begins. You can also swim here if the flow isn’t too strong. You should enter by a door that says Dudhsagar waterfall and you will find a viewpoint here. After the viewpoint, you will need to cross some streams to get to the base of the falls.

Of course, you can do both: head to the Dudhsagar waterfalls Rail Bridge and head to the base if you have enough time and energy.

How to get to Dudhsagar Waterfalls

As mentioned above, Dudhsagar waterfalls are located in the middle of a dense forest, so there are no walkable paths to get to the falls. You can choose one of the ways below to reach / see the falls.

1. Take a train

To understand the train route, you need to know the location of the train stations around Dudhsagar waterfalls:

Castle Rock (Karnataka) —- Caranzol (Goa) —- Dudhsagar (Goa) —- DUDHSAGAR WATERFALL —- Sonaulim (Goa) — Kulem (Goa)

No passenger trains stop at Dudhsagar Railway Station. All trains stop at both train stations: Kulem (Mumbai, Pune, Goa side) and Castle Rock (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai side). You can easily take a train to either of these two train stations. From these Kulem or Castlerock train stations, you can hop on the engine of a slow freight train (if the driver is kind enough to let him – we’ve even heard people bribe the driver). These trains can stop at Dudhsagar station if they get a red signal, but the stop will be short where you have to get off the train (unreliable)!

Remember that there are no platforms at Dudhsagar station and you will have to jump 2 feet from the train. If you can get off here, the Dudhsagar waterfalls railway bridge is only 1 kilometer away in the direction of Kulem. You can easily walk along the train tracks for 1 kilometer to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls railway bridge, from where you will have a great view of the falls. (Note: officially it is not allowed to get off the train at Dudhsagar station; weigh all the risks before choosing this way).

Another way is after arriving at Kulem or Castle Rock station by taking any train, take a freight train to Sonaulim train station. From Sonaulim station, you can walk the train tracks for 3 kilometers to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls railway bridge (risky as the railway guard staff may stop you and you will be asked to return) or walk the mud path for 4 kilometers to reach the base of the Dudhsagar waterfall (more preferable).

Checkout this blog – How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Best train option to get to Kulem from Mumbai

Board the Matsyagandha Express – 12619 from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Mumbai at 3:20 pm and arrive at Madgaon Junction at 1:25 am, rest a few hours at night at the station

Climb aboard Vasco Da Gama – Kulem Passenger 56962 at 8:14 am and arrive in Kulem at 9:05 am and start your walk.

The best train option to get to Dudhsagar from Pune

There are two trekking options for the people of Pune. You can walk from Castle Rock and Kulem both. Take the Goa Express 12780 from Pune at 16:20 and arrive in Castle Rock at 3:05.

If you want to walk from Kulem, continue your journey on the same train and arrive in Kulem at 04:35.

The best train option to get to Dudhsagar from Bangalore

Take the Chennai Central – Vasco Da Gama Express 17311 from Yesvantpur Junction at 21:35. and arrives at Castle Rock at 9:25 am.

If you want to walk from Kulem, continue your journey on the same train and arrive in Kulem at 11:04.

2. Go By Walk

Walk along the train tracks (difficulty level: moderate).

Reach Kulem or Castle Rock train station by road or passenger train. From here, cross the train tracks to the Dudhsagar waterfalls rail bridge. You will have to walk 11 kilometers from Kulem and 14 kilometers from Castle Rock to reach the falls. Keep your ears open to the sound of the train whistle. There is enough room to get off the side of the platform when the train passes. Be careful when approaching trains, especially when walking through the many tunnels on this route. Bringing a flashlight will be convenient.

Please note that there is a possibility that forest rangers or railway personnel will stop you, mainly after Sonaulim station, and you will be asked to return. The best way to avoid this is to hire a guide from Kulem or Castle Rock. These are local villagers who know the area very well and will help you find an alternative route in the forest mud if they have heard of such a vigil on the train tracks. Local guides can charge you INR 500 per person and will accompany you all the way, notify you of the oncoming train, help you get off the tracks on time and of course guide you on alternative routes in case of a railway vigil. You can also negotiate the rates if you are a large group.

If you want to see Dudhsagar waterfalls from the base, walk along the train tracks to Sonaulim Train Station and then take the mud trail through the forest for 4 kilometers to reach the base of the waterfall. It is not recommended to take the mud road at the height of the monsoon as many streams pass along the road which are difficult to cross.

Walk through the forest (difficulty level: moderate to high)

Hiring a guide is a must if you choose to go to Dudhsagar waterfalls by hiking in the woods. To take this road, you will need to reach the village of Kulem. There are several local guides available here who will lead you through the forest road for a small fee mentioned above. If you don’t find any, be patient and ask. Usually many wander around to find customers.

Walking in the jungle is not recommended at the height of the monsoon as it becomes difficult to cross the various streams that stand in the way. Put on your most comfortable walking shoes and get ready to hike the muddy and muddy trails for 12 kilometers one way. This path is the most beautiful path leading to the base of the waterfall.

3. Go on a jeep safari (Difficulty level: easy; View: base of Dudhsagar waterfalls)

If you choose this route, you will need to make your way to the Dudhsagar Jeep Taxi Station in Kulem Village, which is very close to the Kulem Railway Station. Jeep safari is a government initiated service and is highly reliable. However, the jeep route is closed during the monsoon (mid-May to October) as the jeep tracks are too muddy and the streams are difficult to cross in heavy rain. Please note that it is not possible to bring your personal vehicle on the jeep track. 7 passengers are allowed in each jeep and if you are under 7 you will need to form a group of 7 with other nuclear groups before going to the jeep counter. The fare for the jeep safari is INR 2,800 for 7 passengers.

Make sure you get to the stall early in the morning, as crowds build up near the stall as the day progresses, especially on weekends. The jeep safari takes 45 minutes to reach the end of the thoroughfare. From there you have to walk for 15-20 minutes to reach the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. You will be given an hour and a half to see the waterfall and return in the same jeep to continue the journey. The jeep safari ticket office closes at 2:00 pm and all those present at the base of the waterfall are invited to return at 4:30 pm.

Ever thought of going to the cinematic waterfall with milky white water and a railway bridge in front of it with moving trains only to make the view even more scenic. The trek to Dudhsagar falls will let you enjoy this dynamic dreamlike location. So to fulfill this dream I contacted Adventuresome, who was organizing a trek to falls. So here are things that happened during the trek.

Jeep safari to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Dudhsagar waterfalls are part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary . Jeep Safari is the best activity to do here. Getting off the road in the wet mud and observing the animals in the jungle make this safari very adventurous. The sanctuary is home to rare and valuable species of wildlife and is made up of various species of herbs, spices, and medicinal plants.

Depending on your luck, you will have the chance to see the abundant wildlife of Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary including elephant, tiger, deer, Indian bison, leopard, Indian python, etc. Oropendola, Great Indian Hornbill, etc.

You have to be a little careful as there are a lot of wild animals in this park. The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its trekking route and jeep safari.

Visit the ancient temple of Tambdi Surla Mahadev

Tambdi Surla temple is the temple of Mahadev Lord Shiva built in the 12th century. This temple is located within the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple is known for its antiquity and its unique architectural style. It is the only monument of Kadamba Yadava architecture.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Monsoon and after monsoon July to December is the best time to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls. The place is based on the waterfall and we can see the true beauty of nature during the monsoon.

During the monsoon the water level is high so you have to be a little careful and some precautions to complete the hike successfully and happily. If you want to avoid high waters and avoid mud on the roads, you can take this excursion after the monsoon and during the winter. The water level of the falls is moderate at that time and the trail is more accessible than in the monsoon season.

Things to remember before visiting Dudhsagar Waterfalls

There are no restaurants or food stalls near Dudhsagar waterfalls. Make sure you bring your own food. You would get food from the local village in Sonaulim’s only home.

If you are going to the base of the falls, remember to keep your groceries inside the bags as you enter the Dudhsagar gate. The intrepid monkeys will be everywhere grabbing any colorful packaging they see.

If you want to swim in the Dudhsagar River at the base of the falls, do it only with a life jacket. Bathing in the monsoon is not recommended when the water flows with great force.

There are no cloakrooms / lockers to store luggage near the falls.

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary is a plastic-free area. Please don’t make the place dirty.

Toilets are available near the falls, but their cleanliness is another matter.

If you take the forest hike, you may encounter snakes in some sections. They are usually small and harmless unless you disturb them. But having a guide helps as they tend to spot them easily and aren’t afraid of them.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Goa: How to Reach, Timings, Tickets

Located around 60 kilometres away from Goa, on the Goa and Karnataka border, Dudhsagar waterfall is amongst the five highest waterfalls in India. With a height of around 310m (1017ft) and about 100ft in width, Dudhsagar Waterfalls displays a tremendous power of nature, creating a sight worth capturing. This glorious waterfall is one of the best places to visit near Goa , owing to its charismatic natural beauty and striking environment. This gorgeous four-tier waterfall became more popular after its presence in the blockbuster movie- Chennai Express in 2013. It is now one of the most popular spots for tourists visiting Goa and nearby places. The Dudhsagar waterfalls in Goa initially look like a pour out of milk, coming down from the mountain, later transforming into gushing cascades. Here’s everything you should know about Dudhsagar Waterfalls.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – History

The most famous waterfall in Goa, Dudhsagar means the Sea of Milk owes its name to a myth. This was the favourite place of a beautiful princess who used to have a bath in a lake near the Mandovi River every day. After the bath, she would often drink sweetened milk from a golden jug. Once, while having a bath in the lake, she noticed a handsome prince gazing at her. At that moment, she poured the milk from the Golden jug to create a white virtual curtain in front of her, obstructing the view through crystal clear water of the lake. According to the myth, the milk still cascades down the mountain slope in the honour of princess’s virtues.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall in Goa

There are two trains available on daily basis, but they are not directly connected to the fall. Kulem and Castle Rock are the nearest railway stations from where travellers can trek to waterfalls. This mode of reaching the waterfall is strongly recommended for adventure and trek lovers. However, those who are travelling with aged people and children should avoid using this option.

Situated on the coast of Goa and Karnataka, Dudhsagar waterfall can be reached by road too. In case you are travelling to this place from Panjim - the capital of Goa or any other location in North Goa, then you would be required to go by road. Dudhsagar Falls – Guide to Lesser Known Gem of Goa, India

Dudhsagar Falls

All of us love fairy tales , don’t we? It was the enchanting tale of a princess that had brought us to Goa , on our way to the Dudhsagar Falls .

Before we talk about our experience at Dudhsagar Falls, it is but appropriate to narrate here the story that drew us there in the first place.

Once upon a time, there lived a princess on the edge of the woods. She was so beautiful that even the birds sang her praise and even the sun blushed and hid behind the clouds on her approach. The Princess followed a daily morning ritual. She would bathe in a serene and lovely pool in the woods, and after her bath would partake of sweetened milk from a golden jug.

One day, it so transpired that she spotted a handsome prince watching her from behind some trees. Embarrassed at the invasion of her privacy and feeling vulnerable in her nudity, the Princess immediately flung the milk from the golden jug, in front of her, creating a sheet of flowing milk, that acted as a curtain, protecting her from the gaze of the Prince. Legend has it that the sheet of milk cascades down the slopes of the mountain to this day in the form of the gushing, milk-like waters of the Dudhsagar falls. Dudhsagar in Hindi literally means “Ocean of milk”.

Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar Falls – Experiencing Spectacular Majesty

The Dudhsagar waterfalls, which is among the 100 highest waterfalls in the world is situated in the Indian state of Goa . The waterfall has a height of about 310 meters and an average width of about 30 meters. The falls assume spectacular proportions during the rainy season when they are fed abundantly by the monsoons, and the water cascades down in a silver avalanche, adding to the beauty of the Western Ghats. The majesty of the Dudhsagar falls can be best viewed from a train as it passes the small Railway station of Dudhsagar. But our plans were different, we intended to travel to the base of the waterfalls.

As mentioned earlier we had been camping in Bogmalo, a small beachside village in the south of Goa, where the beach was virtually empty in the mornings. Inquiries revealed that Dudhsagar Falls was at a distance of about 76 kilometers from there.

Dudhsagar Falls – Getting There

We hired a cab that would take us to Dudhsagar Falls and drop us back. The driver explained that it would take about 5 hours to and from the falls, plus another couple of hours to reach the base of the falls and spend some time there. So it was a full day outing. We set off immediately after breakfast, with the sun just making its presence felt on the eastern horizon. We made good time as the cab made its way through a winding road, dotted on both sides by swaying coconut palms. The vegetation was lush and it seemed that trees were crying out in joy after welcoming the first monsoon showers.

We soon reached a small town called Collem where the gateway to reach Dudhsagar Falls is located. The village is on the border of the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and Mollem National Park . To reach Dudhsagar Falls we would need to either trek or hire a jeep that would take us 10 kilometers inside the National Park. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the Park. We hired a jeep and also had to hire mandatory life jackets for all of us.

Dudhsagar Falls

We got into the jeep, the excitement rising within us as we entered and passed the gates and entered the National Park . The landscape dramatically changed as we drove over a dirt trail fringed by a canopy of trees. The jeep trembled and shuddered as we drove through uneven tracks into the wilderness. Very soon we came to a small stream of water and the jeep drove right into it. The driver informed us that sometimes the stream’s water would almost reach the windows of the closed jeep. Of course, the route we were taking would be closed in the rainy season, during the months of June, July, and August.

The jeep slithered through another stream as we looked out into the woods beyond the side of the road, willing some wild animals to make an appearance. The driver informed us that the forest was the home for wild animals like the Black Panther, Leopard, Bengal Tiger , and their ilk. A chill did go throughs our spine as we involuntarily rolled up the windows. However, the driver assured us that the animals would be deep inside the forest and never ventured till the track that we were on.

Soon we reached the point where we needed to leave the jeep behind and trek to the base of the waterfalls . After viewing some acrobatic antics by a few monkeys who lay siege to this place we started our trek on our final leg of the journey to reach the base of the Dudhsagar Waterfalls.

Dudhsagar Falls

The Final Trek to the base of the Dudhsagar Falls

We took in deep gulps of the fresh mountain air as we began the trek towards the base of the falls. The area was heavily wooded and sunlight barely pierced through the green cover.

Dudhsagar falls

We crossed a small wooden bridge with a rivulet meandering seductively below. We clambered over some rocks for a few photo ops and generally enjoyed the trek reveling in the wilderness and the beauty of nature at its best.

Dudhsagar Falls

After a couple of kilometers, we reached a spot where we could behold the falls. A railway bridge spawned across the falls, giving it a unique, romantic charm. As if on cue, we heard the siren of an approaching train and soon a train rumbled across the bridge against the backdrop of the waterfalls. The scene before our eyes was straight out of a Hollywood or Bollywood movie.

Dudhsagar Falls

Here is our video of Dudhsagar falls:

Dudhsagar Falls -Spectacular Water Falls Near Goa. Dudhsagar falls is a spectacular waterfall, one amongst the 100 highest in the world. It is situated on the border between the Indian states of Goa and Karna…

We were now almost near the base and came across a scattering of rocks of different shapes and sizes, we needed to climb over these rocks and then descend over to reach the pool at the base of the falls. The rocks were slippery, so we carefully negotiated the rocky path and were soon slipping into the cool waters.

Dudhsagar Falls

The water was not more than 6 or 7 feet as the monsoons had not set in, we were informed that the water in the monsoons was as deep as 25-30 feet and not safe for swimming.

Dudhsagar Falls

However, we had our life jackets on as a mandatory requirement and we swam towards the rocks where the falls plummetted and crashed from a height of 310 meters. After all, not every day do you get the opportunity to stand under such a natural shower.

Dudhsagar Falls

The water of the pool was so cool and refreshing that the heat of Goa in summer was relegated to the inner recesses of our minds. We frolicked and played in the water like babies, to our heart’s content, before reluctantly stepping out of the pool.

Dudhsagar Falls

We retraced the same route to find our jeep waiting for us and sank into it gratefully after some tiring activity. We were soon on our way back to Collem. I looked back as the jeep raised a cloud of red dust behind us to watch a solitary monkey looking wistfully at us. “A penny for your thoughts”, we thought.

We were back in Collem and returned our life jackets and thanked the jeep driver for a great trip. We went in search of our cab, that would take us back to our digs in Bogmalo, but not before we downed a couple of glasses of fresh sugarcane juice, which tasted like manna from heaven to our thirsty palates. We settled ourselves into the cab and decided we would have lunch at one of the Spice Gardens on the way. It would be a lunch combined with a tour of the Spice garden, and we looked forward to the experience.

Do watch this video shot during monsoon when Dudhsagar falls is at full glory. Though the video is a bit lengthy, it is worth a watch to get a complete view. Must watch full screen in HD mode.

Some tips if you plan to visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls

  • If you plan to visit the base of the falls, then May would be the best month, the place would be closed between June, July and August owing to heavy rains and flooding
  • One can view the falls from a train as well, but of course, this is a different experience
  • From Collem you need to take the official jeep that will ferry you to and from the falls and is available on a shareable basis. You also need to hire the life jackets which your Jeep driver will assist you in getting
  • The rocky path near the base of the falls is quite slippery and steep in places and may not be suitable for the elderly and infirm

Wow, this looks amazing, would love get chance to experience this xoxo

That was such an amazing video and spectacular views. The Dudhsagar falls does look like milk coming gushing down. Thank you for sharing the Legend about the princess and the sheet of milk.

This is definitely somewhere I want to visit in the future. Great video 🙂

I love visiting waterfalls and Dudhsagar Falls looks stunning! I would love to visit!

I love waterfalls and would love to visit Dudhsagar falls! It looks amazing!

Great tips. Would love to visit.

I love the back story of the falls! What a beautiful tale. This looks like a spectacular place to visit, I do love chasing waterfalls around the world so will need to add this to my bucket list!

This scene definitely looks like something out of a Hollywood or Bollywood movie. You had me hooked by telling me the legend of how the falls were formed. I can’t believe something so beautiful exists! Even though it takes awhile to get there, I would have had the same excitement as you when finally arriving.

Goa is on the list of places I need to visit in the near future and this scenery is absolutely stunning. I am sure when people think of Goa they automatically imagine a golden beach somewhere but now I have seen these pictures I will definitely be visiting.

It looks like a great experience. I love detailed description and useful tips. Thanks for sharing!

Great experience and nice video composition.

This place looks fabulous! Thanks for the tips 🙂

Wow! I love the descriptions! You have piqued my interest…really have to consider Goa

That is an absolutely spectacular view! I love waterfalls and this is one of the most impressive I’ve seen in person or on the web!

Man, those falls really look amazing! I think I would really enjoy taking that train ride over that bridge! Thx for the great post.

The journey to the falls is in itself quite an experience, with its lush scenery and compelling wildlife. But the falls themselves appear to be something else entirely – it’s quite surprising they’re not really all that well visited, considering they’re in one of the more popular regions of India. Great pictures – they look magnificent! 🙂

Such a beautiful place & beautiful tale! Thank you for the informative post. Will definitely check out when visit India!

Wouldlove togothere. that train crossing the bridge brings two of my favourite things together. Trains and chasing waterfalls. till the next time in Goa.

I LOVE the shot of the train going over the falling water. It’s great that you included a video. Great how you are writing about this region that I’ve never heard of!

Beautiful legend. The falls ar truly beautiful… Have you experienced them from side that train?

I missed visiting as I travelled to Goa when the falls had closed for monsoons. Well… someday!

I can understand why you frolicked in the water – the combination of cool water and natural beauty is definitely frolic worthy.

This looks amazing! I’ve added it to my travel list.

Wow looks incredible, especially one of your first photos of the falls going through the bridge and the train crossing. And I am sure cooling down for a swim (even with the life jackets) would have been so refreshing. I’ve never visiting India, but I would love to go one day and explore. This place sounds so beautiful.

Bathing in milk, now that is luxurious. Does the water flow all year round? I have a friend who is contemplating visiting Goa. I will forward this to him.

Water does flow all year round but during monsoon, it is in its full glory.

What a beautiful tale behind the falls! And getting there looks just as incredible. I love the idea that private cars are not allowed as it makes for controlled access and a bit more respect to the park. Would love to visit and spend a day swimming beneath them!

Goa is one of the places on our wishlist and most probably, we will be there by the year end. But after watching the video I should re-plan it during monsoons. Must say, a very informative post, beautiful pictures and all important tips. I really enjoyed reading the post, looking forward to more such stories. http://roadtotaste.com/travel/international/malaysia/kuala-lumpur-itinerary-day-1

I really love that photo of the train and the majestic mountain behind, absolutely superb. I have a few friends heading to that part of the world in the coming months so have shared it via my social media channels. Really enjoyed this post, keep up the great work

During the monsoon the waterfalls seem absolutely STUNNING!! That roar, wow! That’s the period I’d like to go there, even if I think it would be harder to reach the point. About your trip, I didn’t know it was mandatory to wear life vests while swimming in the pool, but I guess it’s for safety reason on organized tours, isn’t it? Thanks for letting us know this “unknown” gem in Goa 🙂

Dudhsagar is a beautiful place which I can say is still untouched by heavy tourism that most parts of india is inflicted with. The beauty of the waterfalls are a view that one can gaze at for hours and never get tired of it.

This looks amazing! That photo of the train going over the waterfall boggles my brain though! How does that work when the waterfall is higher?!

Thank you It becomes quite misty when it is in full glory and the railway track is on a bridge.

Oh hell yeah, I love fairytales. The story of the princess is really beautiful. Great post with amazing pictures. Reading it I always had to imagine how different the nature must be during monsoon time compared to “dry” season. But I actually don´t want to imagine sitting in that jeep when the water is that high – scary thought!

The waterfalls look incredible!! Great to see the contrast from the dry to wet season!

oh wow looks amazing I love waterfalls and then throw in some cute monkeys and I would so enjoy this trip. Great photos!!

i visited Dudhsager Falls back in 2008 when I was in Goa so reading this took me right back there again! I remember a bumpy journey and a bit of a walk but it was worth it. We didn’t need life jackets back then and we do remember large fish nibbling at our toes because people were throwing pieces of banana in for them! Great memories, thanks for sharing. #FeetDoTravel

Wow what a beautiful waterfall – and loved the tale of the Princess! I have not been to Goa yet but I will definitely try to see the falls when I do!

Wow! I also love chasing waterfalls and I’m now wanting to do a weekend road trip while looking at your photos! I love the love story that you shared too behind the pretty scenery. 🙂 Your photos are great too, thanks for sharing this. 🙂

looks stunning!

The legend behind the falls is really interesting. The water does look a bit like milk as it cascades!

I have never been to the Dudhsagar falls even after being to Goa so many times. Your post makes us look away from the usual beer and beaches. Do read about our trip to Goa http://saltandsandals.com/backpackers-guide-to-goa/

Great post! I love waterfalls and this one is stunning. I love that there is hiking involved to get to it. Your video and pictures captured this great adventure nicely!

perfect timing on the waterfalls photo while a train was passing by! I need to remind myself that there is a hidden gem in Goa that is also a must visit aside from its beautiful beach.

I have been to Goa several times but never to these falls and that is my greatest disappointment! Interesting fairy tale there. 🙂 These tips on how to get there are helpful. I must plan a trip exclusively for this.

I’m a fan of lesser known places. Great job capturing it. Now I know more about the best of Goa, thanks to you.

Wow, that looks like an incredible place! Swimming at the base of that huge waterfall must be amazing – and maybe a little scary 🙂 Thanks for sharing this story! x

Stunning falls and visiting when they are in full flow would be an incredible experience. I love waterfalls and haven’t heard about this one! Another reason to visit the area! Love that you have to hike to get there too – makes it even more special!

From the first photo you would say that it a waterfall in Norway, not in Goa. It looks absolutely stunning! I would love to do the trek that you did, I love hiking. However, I would not like to know beforehand that I might meet a Bengal tiger or a Black panther on my way. That would probably scare me for the entire day, haha.

Ive not heard of the Dudhsagar waterfalls before, so thanks for sharing! Never been to Goa either, would love to one day. Your photos and video are amazing.

I always love reading your travel writing, especially your creative writing like the tale of the Princess in this post. This looks and sounds like paradise. I would absolutely love this.

I was in Goa in 1989 and didn’t hear about these falls. Looks like very pretty countryside and the swimnming looks nice too.

Thanks for adding magic to this already beautiful place with the story of the princess! I’m fascinated, can’t wait to see it for myself.

I love visiting waterfalls and Dudhsagar falls look incredible, especially in monsoon season. Nice legend about the origin of the falls, always appreciate some local folklore. This looks like somewhere I’d like to go if I visit India one day.

Dudhsagar is undeniably a fairytale waterfall. We had been to Dudhsagar by train which runs along the falls. The falls are close to our hometown in Karnataka. We boarded a train and disembarked at a station near the falls and walked along the track to the falls. It was a memorable experience. 🙂

This is too cool! I love that train that crosses that bridge! 🙂

Wow, Dudhsagar falls looks so breathtaking. I honestly didn’t know that such place existed, until I read your post, lol. It would be a dream to go there, and experience it myself. 🙂

I planned for Dudhsagar many times when I lived down south. After shifting to Delhi it completely slipped out of my list. But this post will probably make me do something next monsoon!

I didn’t realize the enormity of the falls until the end when I saw swimmers at the base. Wow! It really is a beautiful waterfall and for sure is on our India bucket list. I’m such a sucker for beautiful falls.

Oh wow! I never heard of this waterfall before but it looks truly breathtaking to be honest. The way the waterfall falls down so close to that bridge is spectacular too, but I love the fact that you went to the base of the fall to explore it as good as you could. So beautiful!

Love destinations with an intriguing back story! It must have been so surreal seeing these massive falls in person. I hope to make it there one day very soon!

Great write up. Even though its high on my Bucket list, I’ve still not had the chance to visit Goa. Photos are spot on. I have pinned it on my travel board for later.

Those falls are incredible! They’re made even more special by being open to bathers. I’d love to dip in those waters and feel the fairy tale for myself.

Oh this is absolutely BREATHTAKING! What an incredible adventure you enjoyed! Thank you so much for your descriptive post and gorgeous photos

Dudhsagar is just amazing in monsoon. I wanted to see it this time too, but time was short. Hope to get there again. I am also, hoping to catch it via a train journey. Lovely pics.

At first, I was wondering what the Dudhsagar Fall were looking like seeing hundred of falls before. After reading the legend, I was mesmerized by the history, and why it would be called this way. It’s something incredible to see IRL and it seems like you had such a great time getting to there! The hiking is such one of my favorite activity btw, and I’ve been and enjoying your article! One of the best guide actually regarding Goa and the surroundings!

We are 6 friends planning to visit dudhsagar falls on Nov.1 2016. Please let me know visiting dudhsagar falls (Via jeep or treck) is banned or not.

Hello Sudhakara, Trek might take you all few hours. Better to go by jeep and enjoy swimming under the waterfall for a longer time. 🙂

I remember 10 years ago sometime in June, I happened to be on a train and clearly remember when the train stopped at Castle Rock Station. I had no clue the falls were ahead and had never heard about it either. To enjoy the chilled weather, I sat at the footboard of the train for the next few stations. A few stops away the tunnel arrived and then all of a sudden I’m at the Dudh Sagar Falls. I was elated, and couldn’t control my emotions. That was one of my first solo travels I did. What an experience! Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

I loved the story in the beginning! Tales like this always make the experience of visiting a place more intimate.

I was surprised, once I saw the photos with the swimmers, how large the falls really were. Those are great for adding perspective.

Truly fantastic! Wasn’t aware of the story behind the Dudhsagar falls. It looks heavenly! Also, your way of describing the story and putting tips is commendable.

What a comprehensive post! I had no idea about the fairytale, but it sounds like a fascinating legend. You have given a fantastic and detailed description for visitors to plan their journey to Dudhsagar.

Thanks you for this guide, love all photographs, i am sharing it.

One of the best experience of my life was when I traveled to DUDHSAGAR WATERFALL. It was really a unique experience among all other places which i visited in Goa. The most amazing part of the tour was watching the waterfall was amazing. Can’t forget this trip thank u sea water sports.

Absolutely beautiful!! Everything with the legend and the scenery made it all feel so magical. Would love to visit this the next time I am in Goa

Never been, but those falls look amazing!! What an experience 🙂

I have never heard of this falls. Thank you for sharing, it seems like a nice thing to do if you visit Goa.

That is a great guys and I have never heward that story before but it definitely made me curious to see this place.

Wow, Dudhsagar Falls look absolutely stunning! I bet it would be incredible to pass them on the train!

With the literal meaning as “Sea of Milk”, Dudhsagar Waterfall boasts of a breath-taking scenic beauty. Located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary, in the Sanguem district, it is quite close to the Karnataka border. It is at a distance of about 60 km from the Panaji city.

With a whopping height of over 1,000 feet, the stream of water falls amidst the lush greenery of tropical forest, creating a scene worth capturing. One can visit the waterfall throughout the year except monsoon, as the roads are closed during rainy season. The roads open in the month of October.

There is a legend associated to the waterfall, according to which, this place was one of the favorite places of a beautiful princess. After her bath, she would often drink sweetened milk from a jug made of gold. Once, while doing the same, she saw a handsome prince who was looking at her while she was drinking her milk. To hide her modesty, she poured the milk from her jug, forming a white curtain in front of her. As per the legend, the sugared milk that the princess poured down still flows down the mountains in honour of her virtues.

For adventure seekers, trekking to the waterfall can be an exciting activity. To reach the waterfall, there are four different routes, each offering a unique adventurous experience. One of the most popular adventure trek to the waterfall starts from Kuveshi village. Other treks to the waterfall start from Castle Rock railway station; Collem railway station or Kulhem railway station and via crossing the Mandovi River. You can also hire jeep safari to the waterfall.

For staying near the waterfall, you have the forest guesthouse that is run by the Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation. There are various choices for luxury as well budget accommodation at Madgaon as well.

It is advisable to carry water bottles and something to eat as there are no shops near the waterfall.

Long ques for jeep ride at Colleem a small village near Goa Karnataka border. We were woken up by tour operator at4.30am and had to report the place befor 7 am. Totally crazy as ticket counter started late at 8.30am. Little delay and we would have missed the booking as there were already enough people to Book limited jeeps run by forest department -govt of Goa. Bumpy ride to fall by jeep is one rare experience .
