Edmunds' Expert Review

is a dodge journey a suv

  • Extra versatility provided by a standard three-row seat
  • Low price for the segment
  • Lacks many modern safety and convenience features, even in top trims
  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Disappointing and outdated base engine and transmission
  • Handling and drivability lag behind competitors

What's new

  • The SXT trim level has been dropped leaving the SE, Crossroad and GT
  • The SE gets additional standard content; new front and rear bodywork are now available with the V6 engine
  • Part of the first Journey generation introduced in 2009

Time has not been kind to the 2019 Dodge Journey. Despite previous refreshes or redesigns to keep pace with changing tides and tastes, it's pretty much the same as when the Journey debuted a decade ago. Dodge designers might have nailed the Journey's purpose from the start, but they've since let others catch up and surpass it in many areas.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2019 Dodge Journey SE Value Package 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.56 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Dodge has made some minor tweaks to this year's Journey. There's one fewer trim level, allowing some of the discontinued trim's features to migrate to the base trim. There is, however, the new and exceptionally cool Destroyer Gray paint scheme. The Journey should only come in this color. It might give the car some much-needed attitude.

But it will take more than attitude to bring the Journey back into serious consideration among its newer and more refined Kia and Volkswagen competitors. Even when fully optioned, it lacks most of the safety features today's buyers might expect. Its base four-cylinder engine is truly underwhelming and is paired to an equally uninspired four-speed automatic transmission, a combination that yields subpar fuel economy. There's a stronger, optional V6, but even it can't keep up with other three-row SUVs.

The 2019 Journey will get you where you're going, and it will do so for less money than many competitors. But overall you'll probably be happier with vehicles such as the GMC Acadia, Kia Sorento or Volkswagen Tiguan.

Acceleration, drivability, seat comfort, ride comfort, noise & vibration, climate control, ease of use, getting in/getting out, driving position, small-item storage, cargo space, child safety seat accommodation, audio & navigation, smartphone integration, driver aids, voice control, which journey does edmunds recommend, 2019 dodge journey models.

All trims come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive as an option. Front-wheel-drive SE and Crossroad trims come standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (173 horsepower, 166 pound-feet of torque) paired with a four-speed automatic. Opting for all-wheel drive gets you a 3.6-liter V6 (283 hp, 260 lb-ft of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Standard feature highlights for the Journey SE include 17-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, roof rails, heated side mirrors, a height-adjustable driver's seat, 60/40-split second-row seats and 50/50-split third-row seats (both rows slide and recline). Also included are keyless ignition and entry, a rearview camera, and a six-speaker sound system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface and auxiliary audio input.

The SE can be upgraded with the optional Connectivity package (Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, voice commands and a leather-wrapped steering wheel), the Comfort/Convenience package (upgraded cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat), the Blacktop package (17-inch alloy wheels and blacked-out exterior trim), and the Premium Group (combines the Connectivity and Comfort/Convenience packages). Remote start and an alarm are also available.

Moving up to the Crossroad gets you the features of the Premium Group plus 19-inch wheels, a touring-tuned suspension, leather upholstery, three-zone climate control with rear-seat vents, and an upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Options available for the Crossroad include remote start, heated front seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, a premium six-speaker stereo system with subwoofer, navigation, a sunroof, and the Driver Convenience package, which brings rear parking sensors and a universal garage door opener.

The range-topping GT trim combines most of the Crossroad's options listed above with unique 19-inch wheels and an upgraded suspension.

Is The Dodge Journey A Minian Or SUV? (What’s The Difference?)

*This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

People often get confused when they hear someone talking about the Dodge Journey. Many people seem to think that it is an SUV while other people argue that instead it is a minivan, but which is it?

The Dodge Journey is a SUV/crossover that was sold beginning in 2009. The vehicle was designed to replace the Chrysler Pacifica (SUV not minivan) that was discontinued in 2008.

The confusion often arises because Dodge/Chrysler often repurpose their vehicle names multiple times and even for different types of vehicles (as is the case with the Chrysler Pacifica that was an SUV and is now a minivan). However, the Dodge Journey name has only ever been used for their SUV/crossover model as of now.

Another reason that the Journey is a slightly confusing vehicle is that the style shares a lot of resemblance to a minivan and it isn’t a long way off the ground like most SUVs however, when you get closer to the Journey it quickly becomes obvious that it isn’t a minivan.

The easiest way to tell if a vehicle is a minivan or not is by looking at the doors for the second row. All minivans have sliding doors for their second row seats while crossovers and SUVs have the traditional doors that swing open.

When looking at this and other features it becomes quite clear that the Dodge Journey is an SUV/crossover as it has all of the expected features as other sport utility vehicles do and doesn’t have sliding doors like a minivan.

There are some additional things that you can look at to determine if a vehicle is a minivan or SUV as well which I will mention a little bit later in this article.

What is the main difference between a minivan and SUV?

It is important to have some information about both of these types of vehicles so you can not only easily tell them apart but also so you know what each one offers so you can easily decide if you want to purchase one of them or neither in the future.

Of course, no matter which vehicle you want to buy (now or in the future) it’s always good to have as much information as possible.

Specifically, minivans are those vehicles that emphasize comfort and space over power and off-road capabilities.  Though the power available in a minivan is plenty for what they are used for they will have far less power than SUVs.

The space factor and seating capacity are also a huge difference. You can easily fit 7-8 people inside of a minivan with plenty of legroom while most SUVs won’t be able to fit more than 6 people and the space for those 6 people is often far less in an SUV than in a minivan.

While SUVs are certainly preferred for their massive power and all-weather driving they are also known for looking far better than a minivan as well. If you have a family but don’t want to look like your parents or grandparents then you will likely choose to buy an SUV or a minivan!

What are the advantages of an SUV?

SUVs are equipped with a ton of amazing features that make them quite popular and also efficient. Other segments like sedans or minivans have plenty of features but they are far from being as popular as SUVs currently.

SUVs are capable of providing tons of power for hauling trailers, campers, etc. while still providing a decent amount of comfort at the same time.

For many people, an SUV is a great way to look good while still having the space for most families and also being able to haul thousands of pounds. SUVs are packed full of great features that make them quite useful for daily driving as well.

What are the features of the Dodge Journey?

The core features of this vehicle revolve around the safety and engine specifications. These are really the best features of this vehicle besides the main reason that people choose this SUV/crossover, THE PRICE!

The Dodge Journey is one of the cheapest SUVs/crossovers so it is extremely popular with those families who want to look stylish and have tons of power under the hood while still not breaking the bank.

The Dodge Journey is equipped with multi-stage driver and passenger airbags, which helps to minimize the damage to passengers in case of any accident. Apart from this, the Journey also has front-seat side airbags and third row side curtain airbags, which helps to provide maximum safety.

As it helps in most off-road driving, the electronic stability control also helps keep the vehicle stable at every point along the way. These features are also complemented by an electronic mitigation system and brake assist in gaining effectiveness in handling and control.

The power of the engine capacity of this vehicle is also important. It is equipped with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine capable of providing 173hp of power and 166lb-ft of torque.

With these specs and features, you can easily get optimum performance from this SUV.

Why do people prefer the Dodge Journey over other SUVs or minivans?

There are a few different reasons why some people prefer the Dodge Journey over other minivans/SUVs.

First of all, it is from the SUV segment but provides almost all of the same functionalities as a minivan does. The space provided can help you get almost the same number of people inside of one as what could fit in a much larger minivan (although with not as much leg room).

Apart from that, the comfort provided by this vehicle is excellent as well.

Perhaps most importantly, the safety provided by this vehicle is a virtually unmatched feature of this SUV. It has airbags at almost every possible impact point that will help the passengers in the unlikely event of a collision. Safety is amongst the best features one can get with this SUV.

Choosing to get this vehicle can help you to fulfill the need for an automobile and also will provide plenty of safety for your family too.

Is Dodge Journey an off-road vehicle?

Now that we have settled the fact that the Dodge Journey comes from the SUV segment of vehicles and also that it is equipped with a powerful engine let’s take a look at whether it can be used for off roading or not.

Although the Journey has enough power to go off road, if the terrain is very uneven then it really isn’t a good choice. This is because the Dodge Journey only has a ground clearance of slightly over 7 inches (yes you read that right)!

With only 7 inches of clearance you could easily tear up the underside of the vehicle by going over any medium sized rocks or uneven terrain.

The Dodge Journey is a great choice for city driving or even traveling across country but for off road use it isn’t a good choice.

What are the best functionalities of the Dodge Journey?

The best functionalities of the Dodge Journey are its crossover features. Though many people are often confused about this vehicle’s segment, the fact that it comes with the comfort of a minivan and power like an SUV makes a vehicle that is a nice combination of both.

Those people who don’t want to compromise any aspects of their vehicles, whether it is power or comfort, should opt for this SUV.

Apart from the crossover part, it also contains a great level of safety consideration in the availability of the all-around airbags. It doesn’t only save you from damage but can also help protect you or those that you love from death in the event of an incredibly dangerous accident.

The overall look and the performance of this crossover vehicle make it an excellent automobile for all kinds of different purposes.

As per the company, it belongs to the SUV segment and is not a minivan no matter how many people claim that it looks like one or even drives like one!

2018 Dodge Journey Overview

Is the 2018 dodge journey a good used suv.

The 2018 Dodge Journey is not a great midsize SUV . While it has a few appealing traits, its negatives outweigh its positives.

The 2018 Journey does have a few strengths:

  • Uconnect infotainment system is easy to use
  • Rides gently over most surfaces
  • Lower ownership costs than some class rivals

But it has several drawbacks:

  • Less cargo room than many rivals
  • Lower safety scores and fewer safety features than most rivals
  • Lowest possible predicted reliability rating
  • Excessive body lean makes this vehicle feel unwieldy at times
  • Lethargic engines

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Journey?

Dodge made no major changes to Journey for 2019. Because of that, you could likely spend less money and get a virtually identical vehicle with a used 2018 model.

Read about the new Journey »

Dodge redesigned the Journey for the 2009 model year, and this SUV hasn’t seen any major changes since 2011. Many of the updates since then have consisted of reshuffling trims. For example, Dodge cut the AVP and Limited trims for 2016 and introduced the Crossroad Plus. For 2017, the GT replaced the R/T, and for 2018, Dodge narrowed the lineup to four trim levels and made a third-row seat standard.

Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

The Journey is available in four trim levels: SE, SXT, Crossroad, and GT. A four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive come standard in the three lower trims. A more capable V6 engine and all-wheel drive are available in every trim except the top-of-the-line GT, where they come standard.

The base Journey SE is sparsely equipped for a midsize SUV . Not even Bluetooth comes standard. The SXT doesn’t add much in the way of features. The Crossroad adds a larger infotainment screen and a little more interior versatility. In addition to the V6 engine and all-wheel drive mentioned above, the GT trim has a sport-tuned suspension and several of the comfort features available in the Crossroad trim.

The Crossroad is the best bet for most shoppers because it's the lowest trim available with several comfort, convenience, and active safety features. Just be aware that you'll need to shop for the specific features you want.

  • Dodge Journey SE: The entry-level Journey SE has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, the Uconnect infotainment system, a 4.3-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Available options include Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
  • Dodge Journey SXT: The Dodge Journey SXT adds no standard features to the SE’s equipment list, but you may find SXTs with features that weren't offered in the base trim, such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a fold-flat front passenger seat.
  • Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Dodge Journey Crossroad has an 8.4-inch touch screen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and all the options listed above. You may also find Crossroad models equipped with tri-zone automatic climate control, remote start, heated front seats, leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. When new, the Crossroad was the lowest trim to offer these options.
  • Dodge Journey GT: The Journey GT features a V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, a high-performance suspension, remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a six-speaker premium stereo. Many of the same options from the Crossroad are available in the GT.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions too.

Dodge has one of the weaker CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Rivals such as Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford and Honda are all better.

2018 Dodge Journey Versus the Competition

Which is better: 2018 dodge journey or 2018 hyundai santa fe.

The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is a great midsize SUV . It’s available in two body types: the two-row Sport and the three-row Santa Fe. Both body styles have more cargo space than the Journey. The Santa Fe also has higher safety scores, a better predicted reliability rating, more standard features, and available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its available engine options are energetic, and it has a more composed ride. The Hyundai is the superior choice.

Which Is Better: 2018 Dodge Journey or 2018 Kia Sorento?

The 2018 Kia Sorento is another great choice. It has an elegant cabin, good safety and predicted reliability ratings, strong engine options, and a coddling ride. The Sorento has more cargo space than the Dodge too. Compared to the Sorento, the Journey will save you around $3,000 on average, and it has standard third-row seating – an option in the Sorento. Still, if you have a little leeway in your budget, the Kia is the superior choice.

Compare the Journey, Santa Fe, and Sorento »

2018 Journey Performance

How does the 2018 journey drive.

The base engine struggles at highway speeds and when the Journey is loaded with passengers and cargo. It’s also noisy, and the four-speed automatic transmission makes poorly timed shifts. The V6 fares better, but not by much. Models equipped with the V6 engine still deliver sluggish acceleration.

This crossover SUV drives like a larger vehicle, with lots of body lean. It’s capable of handling winding roads, though, and its suspension does a good job smoothing over road flaws.

  • Base engine: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque
  • Available engines: 3.6-liter V6 with 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive
  • Transmission: standard four-speed automatic; available six-speed automatic (with V6)

Does the 2018 Journey Get Good Gas Mileage?

The base four-cylinder engine returns typical fuel economy estimates for the class.

  • 2.4-liter: 19/25 mpg city/highway
  • 3.6-liter, FWD: 17/25 mpg
  • 3.6-liter, AWD: 16/24 mpg

2018 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity

When properly equipped, the Journey can tow up to 2,500 pounds.

2018 Journey Interior

How many people does the 2018 journey seat.

The Journey seats seven people in three rows. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and the second-row seats have ample head- and legroom for most adults. Space in the third row is tight; these seats are best left for kids. The cabin has an upscale look and feel, with lots of soft-touch surfaces.

Standard seating features:

  • cloth seats

Available seating features:

  • leather seats
  • heated front seats
  • power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • power-folding front passenger seat
  • heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2018 Journey?

For securing child car seats, this SUV has two complete sets of LATCH connectors on the outboard second-row seats. There’s also a third tether anchor and a single lower anchor for the second row's rear middle seat, and another lower anchor can be borrowed from the second-row passenger-side seat. The whole setup received a second-worst Marginal rating for ease of use from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because the tether anchors are hard to find and can be easily confused for other hardware.

2018 Dodge Journey Dimensions

Dodge journey cargo space.

The Journey has 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, 37 cubic feet behind the second row, and 67.6 cubic feet behind the front row.

Most other midsize crossovers, such as the 2018 Dodge Durango , have more cargo room. Even some compact SUVs , like the 2018 Toyota RAV4 , have more room. Additionally, the high liftover height makes it difficult to load heavier items. On the plus side, the fold-flat front passenger seat makes it easier to store longer items.

These cargo dimensions are for comparative purposes. There is no substitute for visually examining the storage area in any car you’re considering.

2018 Dodge Journey Length and Weight

  • Length: 16 feet
  • Curb weight: 3,818 to 4,238 pounds
  • Gross vehicle weight rating: 5,250 to 5,600 pounds

Are Dodge Journeys Generally Reliable?

The more dependable the vehicle, the less you will spend on repairs and the more time you will have to go places you want. Let’s examine the general reliability of the Dodge Journey when considering all available years.

The Dodge Journey struggles a little in reliability. According to withclutch.com , the Journey scores a 40, placing it low in reliability. It’s one of the lowest Dodge options, tied with the Dodge Caliber for last place amidst their other vehicles.

It’s ideal to get a second opinion on any review. According to repairpal.com , the Journey scores ⅘, placing it above average for mid-size SUVs and putting it sixth out of twenty-six other mid-size options. It’s a decent performer here.

The annual repair cost for the Dodge Journey is $562, slightly below the average for similar vehicles. If there is a need for a sudden and unexpected repair, there is a 12% chance it will be severe, 1% lower than the average for similar cars on the market.

Those behind the wheel of the Dodge Journey should anticipate bringing it to the repair shop for unexpected fixes .3 times a year. Again, this number is lower than the average of .4 for mid-size vehicles. Although the Journey has its faults, it’s a reliable choice when you have the ideal year.

Which Dodge Journey Years Are The Least Reliable?

Considering the most reliable years naturally brings us to the least reliable selections for the Dodge Journey. These cars boasted the most flaws, costing owners precious time and money to take care of the errors and get their vehicles back on the road.

Here are the least reliable selections for the Dodge Journey in today’s market:

  • 2009 Dodge Journey
  • 2010 Dodge Journey
  • 2011 Dodge Journey
  • 2012 Dodge Journey

If you’re looking for the most reliable year Dodge Journey offers interested drivers, stay away from these choices at all costs to avoid serious expenses.

There were several significant issues in these years. A few of the most prominent included brake troubles, interior accessory faults, malfunctioning remote keyless entry issues, and interior water leaks, to name a few.

It was most common to see customer complaints in these years. However, some general issues often show up in the Dodge Journey. Before buying a used version of this vehicle, it’s helpful to know what you will face.

IS GAP INSURANCE WORTH IT?

Gap insurance can prevent you from making payments on an already-totalled car, but is gap insurance worth it? We break down what gap insurance is, if it’s worth it, and more - simply and with plenty of examples.

What Are The Most Common Issues With A Dodge Journey?

Interested in a used Dodge Journey? One of the many ways to ensure a smoother ownership experience is to know about the potential issues and reported problems you may encounter with a used Journey, including:

1. Engine Overheating Problems

Engine overheating is a common and serious issue in Dodge Journey models from 2009 to 2016. This problem usually arises around 78,000 miles and is often due to debris blocking the primary thermostat housing’s cylinder head coolant port. Early signs include the vehicle’s temperature light turning on, but it can escalate to significant power loss and coolant leaks. These issues can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. Owners should have their vehicles checked by a mechanic for debris removal or thermostat housing replacement if they notice these symptoms.

2. Faulty Transmission

Transmission problems  were a significant concern for several Journey years including 2009 and 2014, often appearing as early as 15,000 miles. Owners have described the transmission as stiff and erratic, with abnormal clunking sounds during gear shifts. Despite releasing multiple technical service bulletins (TSBs), many owners have found that the issues persist. If you experience transmission problems, it’s essential to consult a professional mechanic to address these concerns.

3. Remote Keyless Entry Malfunctions

The remote keyless entry system in Dodge Journey models from 2009 to 2017 is notorious for its frequent malfunctions. Owners have reported issues starting around 66,000 miles, such as the system failing to detect the key fob, preventing the doors from locking or unlocking, and even causing the vehicle to fail to start. Although there is no definitive cause, a wireless ignition node (WIN) software upgrade may help resolve these issues. This malfunction can be particularly inconvenient, impacting the vehicle’s security and usability.

4. Persistent Water Intrusion in the Cabin

From 2009 to 2018, many Dodge Journey owners have faced the frustrating problem of water leaks inside the cabin. This issue often manifests around 58,000 miles and can make the driving experience quite uncomfortable. Water accumulates under the driver’s seat and in the vehicle’s rear, soaking the floor and carpets. The leaks are typically found around windows, headliners, and vents. To prevent further damage, it’s crucial to identify and seal these leaks as soon as they appear.

5. Premature Brake Wear

Brake issues are a menace for 2009-2010 Dodge Journey models, with many owners reporting  premature brake wear around 33,000 miles . This issue often necessitates frequent replacements of brake discs, calipers, rotors, and pads, which can become quite costly—up to $400 per replacement. Unfortunately, many owners have reported that Dodge did not cover these repairs, leading to significant out-of-pocket expenses.

6. Electrical Starting Issues

Electrical problems in the 2009 Dodge Journey can cause the engine to fail to start, typically occurring around 60,000 miles. Some owners have reported that their vehicles would not start at all and had to resort to towing. Additionally, there have been instances where the car shuts off while driving, posing a severe safety risk.

Replacing the starter motor or key fob might resolve the issue, but it’s not a guaranteed fix. The 2009 model is also known for faulty wiring, which has prompted multiple recalls due to the risk of fire. Owners of affected vehicles should take them to a dealership for free recall-related repairs.

7. Head Gasket Failures

The 2014 Dodge Journey, in particular, has been plagued with head gasket problems. These issues can start as minor performance hiccups but quickly escalate to severe engine damage or complete failure. Owners have reported experiencing leaky or blown head gaskets around 100,000 miles. Conducting a compression test can help determine if the head gaskets are faulty. If they are, replacement by a professional mechanic is recommended. This issue tends to occur around 100,000 miles and can be costly to repair if not addressed promptly.

Overall, these are fairly major issues, so be extra vigilant when shopping for a used Dodge Journey. Before signing the dotted line, understand which problems may affect your Journey model so you can prepare financially. Or, you can simply pass on the unit if you’re not too keen on spending big on repairs.

Is The Dodge Journey Worth It?

If you’re looking for a unique mid-size crossover SUV, the Dodge Journey is an excellent option. The best years have minimal complaints, offering a quality experience to the person behind the wheel. The Journey isn’t perfect, but it’s worth it for many.

However, there are more reliable crossover options. If you want a car at the top of its reliability game, you might want to go with something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what are the top five most reliable years for the dodge journey.

A:  If you’re searching for a dependable used Dodge Journey, look no further than the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 model years. These five years have proven themselves with minimal repairs and few customer complaints.

Q: What is the average annual repair cost for a Dodge Journey?

A:  On average, Dodge Journey owners can expect to spend around $562 per year on repairs, which is slightly lower than the average for similar vehicles. This means that not only is the Journey a reliable choice, but it also won’t put a significant dent in your wallet when it comes to maintaining the vehicle. Of course, opting for one of the most reliable model years can help further minimize repair costs.

Q: Which Dodge Journey model years should be avoided due to poor reliability?

A:  Steer clear of the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Dodge Journey model years to avoid costly repairs and frustrating downtime. These four model years have been plagued by numerous customer complaints and significant issues, such as brake troubles, interior accessory faults, malfunctioning remote keyless entry, and even interior water leaks.

Q: How often do Dodge Journey owners typically need to bring their vehicle in for unexpected repairs?

A:  Dodge Journey owners should anticipate making unexpected trips to the repair shop approximately 0.3 times per year, lower than the average of 0.4 for mid-size vehicles. While no car is immune to unexpected issues, the Journey’s lower-than-average frequency of unplanned repairs adds a lot to the reliability front.

Q: How does the Dodge Journey rank in terms of overall reliability compared to other mid-size SUVs?

A:  RepairPal has rated the Dodge Journey with an impressive 4 out of 5 in reliability. Moreover, it ranks sixth out of twenty-six other mid-size options, which is nothing short of impressive. While it may not be the absolute top performer, the Journey holds its own against the competition.

Find Out If Your Dodge SUV Has Been Recalled For Faulty Brakes

AutoGuide.com News Staff

Stellantis is dropping a bombshell on Dodge and Ram owners: more than 211,000 SUVs and pickup trucks are being recalled.

We're talking about the 2022 Dodge Durango , Ram 2500 , and Ram 3500 . The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has blown the whistle on a malfunctioning ABS control module. Without a properly functioning ABS module, your braking performance is much worse and the stability control system could be useless.

Both scenarios are a recipe for disaster, potentially leading to crashes. Stellantis is scrambling to fix the issue, pointing fingers at a software glitch.

find out if your dodge suv has been recalled for faulty brakes, The Ram 2500 and 3500 are also included in the recall

If you own one of these models produced between April 2021 and December 2022 be on the lookout for a recall notice. The Ram 2500 pickup is hit hardest, with 157,890 units expected to be affected, 53,167 Durangos are affected, and just 524 Ram 3500s

But it’s not just U.S. consumers, 17,462 vehicles in Canada are affected. 2,313 in Mexico, and another 5,023 spread across markets outside North America. Fortunately, the fix is as simple as a software update at your local dealership, free of charge. However, recall notices won’t go out until late next month.

THE NEXT-GEN DODGE CHARGER

Introducing the All-New Dodge Charger NEXT-GEN MUSCLE UNLEASHED

  • Preproduction models shown. Actual production model may vary. Features and products shown are for illustrative purposes only. 2DR Daytona R/T and Scat Pack (model shown above): Available late 2024. 4DR Daytona R/T and Scat Pack: Available early 2025.

THE WORLD'S ONLY ELECTRIC MUSCLE CAR

The Next Gen Charger is proof that muscle car performance still exists. It's fueled by the brotherhood—the hundred plus years of know-how and swagger. The All-New Charger was designed throughout to look, feel, drive and sound like a Dodge. It's a direct connection to the spirit of the past while powering this brand into tomorrow.

STILL THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL MUSCLE CAR

This next generation is set to deliver more thrills that surpass legendary V8 performance. With 670 horsepower, the Charger Daytona Scat Pack is expected to target 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and target a 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds.

670 HORSEPOWER + ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack features twin 335-horsepower electric motors with one driving the front wheels, and one driving the rear wheels creating a combined 670 horsepower and estimated 627 lb-ft of instant torque. The rear motor houses a mechanical limited slip differential to minimize slipping during high powered all-wheel drive launch moments. Add in Line Lock for smoky burnouts and Launch Control for the perfect start off the line.

POWERED BY LITHIUM ION

The Charger Daytona 100.5 kWh high-voltage battery was designed from the inside out to support one thing—performance. To achieve optimal performance, the best materials are necessary. That's why the Charger Daytona lithium-ion based battery features a high energy density nickel cobalt aluminum chemistry, which is packaged into prismatic cell structures and distributed across 13 in-series modules. The result—this high-voltage battery delivers a blistering initial peak of 550 kW of power and sustains over 500 kW of power to the electric motors for a full 1/4 mile.

YOU’LL KNOW IT’S DODGE

This is American muscle designed in Detroit. The Next-Gen Charger represents the authentic proportions of a muscle car distilled to its purest form. Flanking the front and rear are illuminated Fratzog badges that pay homage to the early days of Dodge muscle from the 1960s. From the front, profile or rear the Charger Daytona will be unmistakable and unshakable.

TRUE TO FORM

Built with a standard widebody design, the wheels are pushed to the absolute maximum widest position allowing an available staggered tire setup; 305/35ZR20XL front, 325/35ZR20 rear Goodyear Eagle® F1 Supercar® 3 tires.

The front exterior of the all-electric Charger Daytona is defined by the patent-pending R-Wing aero pass-through. This unique front opening helps minimize drag and maximize performance at top speeds. The R-Wing is named in honor of a well-known rocket scientist turned aero engineer who has gone down in history for his efforts on making race cars as aerodynamic as rockets.

THE WORLD’S FIRST FRATZONIC CHAMBERED EXHAUST

The patent-pending Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust elevates the Charger Daytona experience and embodies Dodge's legacy of raw power and adrenaline-pumping performance. With a soon to be iconic roar as commanding as a supercharged V8, the Fratzonic exhaust will deliver the feedback you expect to hear when driving a Dodge.

The interior of the Next-Gen Dodge Charger is an experience entirely on its own. Completely reimagined, it features a clean, minimal design with an available Attitude Adjustment Lighting and refined textures that deliver occupants a visceral feel. Freestanding, driver-centric screens allow for quick glances, and a flat top and bottom steering wheel allows you to easily eye your next maneuver.

The Next-Gen Dodge Charger offers available Black or Demonic Red performance-inspired leather-trimmed front seats with fixed headrests and adjustable thigh bolsters. Available in two material options—Nappa Leather or a Suede Nappa Leather combination—these body-gripping seats are designed to let drivers sink in and feel secure as speeds rise and hearts race.

MISSION CONTROL CENTER

Command and customize your drive intuitively with one-touch experiences conveniently at your fingertips. Amplify your power with PowerShot, delivering an additional 40 horsepower for up to 15 seconds. Or engage the Drive Modes button on the steering wheel to quickly activate Sport, Track or Drag Mode. Information can easily be viewed on the available 16-inch Digital Cluster Display or 12.3-inch Center Display with Uconnect® 5 technology.

Suspect dead, officer injured in shooting at Milton Walmart parking lot, GBI says

Another suspect in custody.

MILTON, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A suspect was killed in a shooting incident involving a Milton Police Department officer that happened in a Walmart parking lot, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). A Milton police officer was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

“It was my second day working and I’m over here just cashing people out when I just hear somebody saying ‘Put your hands up,’ the cops saying, ‘Put your hands up,’” said Noel Manuel, who witnessed the incident from the McDonalds next door.

The shooting incident happened at 5200 Windward Parkway.

Police said officers responded to the Kohls on Highway 9 around 12:15 p.m. in response to a shoplifting call. According to police, the suspects were driving a red Dodge Journey. The Journey hit a car on the way out of the parking lot and drove away.

Police then saw the Journey again at 5200 Windward Parkway, nearly a mile away.

Witnesses tell Atlanta News First that police attempted to stop the car between the McDonalds and the Walmart. They say a woman, who was driving the SUV, was pulled out of the car and arrested.

“The female, the cops yelled to her, “Get on the ground, get on the ground!’” said Egypt Lloyd, Manuel’s mother.

The GBI said 31-year-old Shantidra Harris got out of the car and tried to steal a Toyota Corolla and drive off. According to the GBI, “Harris quickly accelerated the Toyota with an officer directly in front of the bumper. The officer, who was hit by the car, fired his weapon, hitting Harris.”

“Then [she] hit the cop vehicle, which you can see the one that was messed up, and [she] hit a cop, and that’s when the cops, justifiably shot [her],” said Lloyd.

Harris was taken to Wellstar North Fulton Hospital where she later died. The third suspect is still at large, police say.

The officer was also injured “in the altercation,” according to Milton police.

Best used cars to buy in 2024: From trucks and SUVs to EVs

M any car and truck buyers are increasingly being priced out of the new vehicle market as every month seems to set a new record for average transaction prices. What's more, interest rates are at levels that are higher than they were for many years, leading to higher monthly payments. The good news, though, is that financial relief can be found if you’re willing to look at a used but "new-to-you" vehicle that’s still in good condition and that should provide several years of trouble-free service.

We’re breaking down this list of the best used cars to buy in 2024 by price first, then by vehicle segment. We’ll offer a couple of solid suggestions in each category, along, when appropriate, with an alternative or two for those who dare to be a little different. Be aware that the used vehicle market is an ever-changing one , and that your location within the United States can have an impact on the price you pay and the availability of certain models . If you're willing to spend some time and do a little searching ( our classifieds are a great place to start ), you ought to be able to find the right vehicle for your family while fitting nicely within the constraints of your budget.

Best used cars under $10,000

Best used car under $10,000 overall pick: 2014-2020 hyundai elantra.

These days, the pickin's are slim in the under-$10,000 used car bracket. Our top pick goes to the 2014-2020 Hyundai Elantra . It's a compact car, but there's room enough for a small family if they don't mind being close. The Hyundai's reliability record is solid, and since it's fairly new, it packs more safety technology than an older car. The 2014 Hyundai Elantra received some desirable updates, and a completely new model hit the U.S. market in 2017 . At this price point, you'll likely find older models with more equipment or newer models without some high-tech options you may prefer to have. Take a look around and pick the one you like the best.

Best used car under $10,000 for more cargo: 2017-2019 Kia Soul

If you need something with a bit more room for cargo, the Kia Soul is a solid choice . Its funky design helps it stand out from the crowd, and though not quite as efficient as the Elantra, the Soul's range of four-cylinder engine options ought to prove fairly thrifty.

Most reliable used car under $10,000: Any Toyota Camry

If all else fails, it's hard to go wrong with the nicest Toyota Camry you can find. There's a reason Toyota's midsize sedan has sold so well for so many years. Its record for reliability is basically unmatched, it's been sold with both four- and six-cylinder engine options so buyers can tailor their choice for their needs and wants, and it has room inside for families.

Best used EV under $10,000: 2011-2017 Nissan Leaf

Yes, you can buy an electric car for less than $10,000. The Nissan Leaf was America's first mass-market EV , initially hitting the scene for the 2011 model year. They sold in good enough numbers that they aren't hard to find for sale. The early Leaf hatchback didn't come with a particularly big battery — if you travel more than 70ish miles in a day, this probably isn't your top choice — but it's 73-84-mile range is enough for a good chunk of the population. A bit more money could score a Chevrolet Bolt, however, which would offer more than 200 miles of range.

Best used SUV under $10,000: 2011-2020 Dodge Journey

You'll be hard pressed to find an SUV you like in this price range. The Dodge Journey never won any desirability awards when it was new, and it hasn't gotten any more likable with age. But it offers three rows of seats, optional all-wheel drive and a comparably low price, which are big wins for a lot of buyers. We'd suggest casting a wide net and being willing to drive a bit further than you'd like in order to find a Journey with a Pentastar V6 engine instead of the grossly underpowered four-cylinder.

Most common used SUV under $10,000: 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue

The best thing about the Nissan Rogue is that it sold really well for a very long time. That means there are a lot of them on the used market. The Rogue doesn't carry the resale value of rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 , and that means it's more attainable for buyers with limited funds to spend. The continuously variable transmission isn't very rewarding, and repair bills can be high if something goes wrong. On the positive side, the CVT does improve fuel efficiency.

Best used truck for under $10,000: 2005-2011 Dodge Dakota

The Dodge Dakota is a solid pickup truck that's bigger than rivals like the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado . The final Dakota was built between 2005 and 2011, and later models are actually badged as Rams, not Dodges. Either way, it's the same truck. The standard 3.7-liter V6 won't win any drag races — the optional V8s offered more power, naturally — but a decent Dakota offers the ability to haul and tow for just about the lowest price point in America.

Best used truck for towing under $10,000: 2008-2012 Nissan Titan

If you need more towing power, your best bet may be an older Nissan Titan . It's likely that any full-size pickup truck you'll find for less than $10,000 will have higher miles or dents (or both), so be prepared for a truck that's not going to win any beauty contests. But as long as it can still do trucky things and runs well, that's what really matters.

Best used cars under $15,000

Best used car under $15,000: 2011-2015 chevrolet volt.

As far as we're concerned, the Chevy Volt is one of America's top used-car bargains . The first-gen model has fallen into the $10,000-$15,000 bracket, and for that sum, you're not likely to find anything more efficient — as long as it was plugged in the night before, the first 25 to 35 miles will be on electricity alone — stylish and comfortable for daily driving duties. Note that the Volt seats four passengers, not five, but does have a hatchback for greater cargo versatility.

Best used car if you don't have access to a plug: 2016-2017 Honda Civic

If you don't want to worry about plugging in and want a good, solid, reliable daily driver, the Honda Civic is our top pick. It's more fun to drive than a similar Toyota Corolla (which should also prove a very reliable choice), and the 10th-generation model that debuted for the 2016 model year is a surprisingly comfortable and roomy option. If you can find one, the hatchback that debuted in 2017 with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is our favorite.

Best used car under $15,000 that's also a sports car: Any Mazda Miata

You knew you were going to find a Mazda Miata on this list, right? The quintessential little Japanese sports car is a great used buy for those who don't need room for more then themselves and one significant other. It's a joy to drive, reasonably efficient and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy. Buy one and we're sure you'll love it.

Best used car under $15,000 that's both fun and mostly practical: 2014-2017 Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper used to be one of the least-reliable vehicles in America. Most of those reliability foibles were worked out over the years, and the 2014-2017 edition has proven pretty durable. The Cooper isn't as quick around a track as the aforementioned Miata, but it's awfully fun to drive around town. And unlike the Mazda, the Mini has a (small) back seat and a hatchback.

Best used SUV under $15,000: Any Mazda CX-5

SUV used to mean body-on-frame construction and a rugged four-wheel-drive system. These days, the sport utility segment covers everything from barely lifted hatchbacks to monsters that wear Hummer badges. If you're looking for an efficient, reliable and fun-to-drive crossover, the Mazda CX-5 is our top pick . If you find a Honda CR-V in a similar price bracket, that's also a solid choice for the money. The Toyota RAV4 should also be reliable, though probably not as fun to drive as the other options.

Best used SUV under $15,000 with three rows: 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe

If you need a (much) larger utility vehicle, consider an older Chevy Tahoe . It should have one of GM's solid small-block V8 engines under its hood, which should equate to comparably simple maintenance and a wide selection of local mechanics who should be familiar with fixing them when something does break. Check the interior for squeaks and rattles, because GM wasn't known for screwing together the best interiors in this time frame.

Best used truck under $15,000: Any Toyota Tacoma (but check for rust)

The Toyota Tacoma is known for lots of things: reliability and durability being just two of them. High resale value is another, as well as so-so comfort. In the end, a used Tacoma is a solid choice for around $15,000, and likely to offer more years of trouble-free service than anything else in this price range. Expect to see some higher-mileage examples on the market, so be on the lookout for a Tacoma with regular maintenance records.

Best used full-size truck under $15,000: 2013 or newer Ram 1500

If you need a bigger truck, listings for the Ram 1500 would be a good place to start at the $15,000 price point. Ford and GM options enjoy higher resale value on the used market, but the Ram is just as capable and arguably more stylish and comfortable. Our suggestion is to look for a 2013 or newer Ram, and to choose the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and eight-speed automatic combo over the 4.7-liter V8 and six-speed auto. While it's tempting to opt for the V8, our own testing and that of other outlets tells us the V6 is a refined powerplant with solid durability, and the newer eight-speed transmission is a much better choice than the less reliable six-speed.

Best used cars under $20,000

Best used car under $20,000: 2016-2019 chevrolet volt.

Move up one price bracket and you can score a second-generation Chevy Volt instead of the first-gen. The bodywork got swoopier, the noise pointier, the engine downsized and the overall package got more efficient in 2016. Electric range improved from 38 in 2015 to 53 in 2016, meaning more of your miles will be on battery power instead of using more expensive gasoline.

Best used car under $20,000 if you don't want a Chevy or don't want to plug in: 2015-2018 Toyota Prius

We'd argue that the Volt is more stylish and more fun to drive than the Toyota Prius , but it's hard to argue against the hybrid's overall efficiency and expected reliability. The Prius was into its fourth generation by the 2015 model year, and the overall package was more refined than ever. Don't expect to find a plug-in Prius Prime (which debuted in 2017) in this price range, though.

Best used car under $20,000 that's more fun to drive: 2018-2021 Mazda6

The Mazda6 may have ended production in 2021 as the compact crossover took over from the midsize sedan as the vehicle design of choice for the majority of Americans, but it's still an excellent vehicle worth pursuing on the used-vehicle market. It had long been the best-driving car in its segment, its four-cylinder engine options were strong enough to have fun but efficient enough not to break the bank.

Best used electric car under $20,000: 2017-2018 BMW i3

The BMW i3 is nothing if not interesting. Its Lego-block styling isn't to everyone's liking, and even the upgraded 94ah battery the BMW EV got in 2017 won't offer the kind of capacity that makes range anxiety disappear completely, but if your daily commute is 100 miles or less, the i3 may be an interesting option. The boxy hatchback is surprisingly roomy inside, and the interior is almost Scandinavian in its design. Much of the car's structure is made from lightweight carbon fiber, which is pretty exotic for an urban runabout like the i3. Potential buyers should be aware that the German BMW will likely carry higher repair and maintenance bills than a comparable American or Japanese car.

Best used SUV under $20,000: 2017-2018 Honda CR-V

It's hard to go wrong with a Honda CR-V that's been well cared for by its previous owner. The fifth generation of Honda's compact crossover debuted for the 2017 model year with more room, more comfort, more efficiency and, importantly, more safety equipment than ever before. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is the most efficient choice, while a 2.0-liter engine is less common. The automatic is a CVT, but it's better than most competitors and not really a hindrance.

Best used SUV under $20,000 if you need three rows: 2016-2017 Mazda CX-9

Need something larger? Consider the Mazda CX-9 . Not only does it offer three rows of reasonably sized passenger space, it's also pretty fun to drive. In fact, we think it's the best-driving seven-passenger crossover on the market. It's powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and while it's not quite as powerful as some vehicles it competes with, it's plenty sufficient.

Best used pickup truck under $20,000: 2016-2018 Chevrolet Silverado

Pretty much any of the American pickup trucks of the late 20-teens will serve buyers well, but GM's mainstream truck is slightly more affordable than its competitor from Ford, which went to a lightweight aluminum body for the 2015 model year. The Toyota Tundra would also be a solid choice, but fewer were sold each year and they tend to trade at higher prices compared to the ubiquitous Detroit trucks. That's why we're pointing our digital finger at the Chevy Silverado. As the second-best-selling truck, they are very easy to find, so prospective buyers ought to have a few options to choose from. Their V8 engine options are all very solid and have well-earned reputations for durability. There have been reliability concerns with the Silverado's eight-speed automatic, which was offered in upper-level trims, so it might make sense to pick a model with the older six-speed auto.

Best used pickup truck under $20,000 if you want something smaller: 2009-2019 Nissan Frontier

Don't need a full-size truck? The Nissan Frontier that seemingly sold for eons is a solid pickup. It boasts a powerful V6 engine, rugged good looks and a rugged chassis to boot. We didn't have to look hard to find late-model Frontier trucks with reasonable mileage in the $20,000 range. Going back a few years should still result in a bevy of choices in various cabin sizes and with or without four-wheel drive. The 2020 edition got a new engine, but buyers in this price bracket may want to consider sticking with the tried-and-true 4.0-liter V6 of previous years. A six-speed manual was even available, a boon for buyers who prefer to shift for themselves.

Best used cars under $25,000

Best used car under $25,000: 2019-2022 mazda3.

The Mazda3 is a great car. It's offered in either sedan or our preferred hatchback form, and it has a perfect blend of driving enjoyment and practicality. There's a reasonable amount of room inside for people and cargo, but buyers who need more space may want to look for something bigger (like the Subaru we'll mention shortly). Since it's a late-model option, the 2019-2022 Mazda3 offers pretty much all the latest safety tech a buyer could wish for (but no self-driving functionality, of course), and should prove reliable for years to come.

Best used hybrid car under $25,000: 2020-2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

If saving money at the gas pump is of prime concern, we'd suggest taking a good hard look at the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Toyota has been the undisputed king of hybrids for decades now, and all their best Prius-based tech can be had in a more normal-looking and feeling package in the form of the compact Corolla. Expect fuel mileage in the mid-to-high 40s for most Corolla Hybrid models.

Best used car under $25,000 with all-wheel drive: 2020-2022 Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy is also a solid choice for buyers looking for a nice car for less than $25,000. You may know that the hot-selling Subaru Outback is based on the Legacy, but you may not know how much more an Outback costs on the used market until you take a look at the online classifieds. In reality, though, the Legacy is fitted with standard all-wheel drive and offers just as much all-weather dependability and spaciousness as the pricier Outback, and because it's lower to the ground, it's more fuel efficient.

Best used hot hatchback under $25,000: 2015-2019 Volkswagen Golf R

You can really have some fun in the $25,000 price range. The Volkswagen Golf R is a blast  with 290 turbocharged horsepower and all-wheel drive catapulting a little German hatchback at breakneck speeds. It's the hottest version of the quintessential hot hatch, and it's a riot. You can also save some cash and get a GTI, which is also a fun choice.

Best used muscle car under $25,000: 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T

If your tastes run a little more muscular, now would be a good time to take a look over at the Dodge lineup. For $25,000, buyers can snag a lovely Challenger R/T — yes, it's got a Hemi — or if they need a bigger back seat and two more doors, a Charger. Now, we should mention that these Dodge twins are riding atop very old underpinnings and are anything but fuel efficient. But that's kinda the point. If you're more interesting in laying rubber than slicing fuel bills, the Challenger and Charger are there for you.

Best used SUV under $25,000: 2014-2019 Subaru Outback

We know. You'd really rather have an SUV than a sedan. It's a common refrain, and we get it. The added utility of a crossover and the promise of all-weather capabilities is appealing. We still think you should take a look at the most recent Subaru Legacy, but if you'd rather have an Outback, that's OK. Just know you'll have to go back a generation to snag an Outback in this list's budget price category.

Best used SUV under $25,000 that really is an SUV: 2010-2016 Toyota 4Runner

Of course, we've already explained that the Outback is basically a Subaru Legacy underneath. If what you want is a real traditional sport utility vehicle, the Toyota 4Runner is one of the best out there. It's super rugged underneath and is powered by big, burly 4.0-liter V6 engines. Five occupants fit comfortably, and some models have a mostly usable third row, too. Do be aware that the 4Runner doesn't just look like a proper SUV, it is a proper SUV. That means it rides like an SUV and guzzles fuel like and SUV.

Best used crossover that won't kill you on fuel bills: 2018-2020 Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid

A more traditional compact crossover experience can be found in the Toyota RAV4, and the 2018-2020 edition is a much nicer overall package than the models that came before. The ride is good, the handling is solid, and the powertrains offer a solid compromise between performance and efficiency. There's a lot to like in these RAV4s. If you want to reduce your fuel bill, the RAV4 Hybrid also falls into the price range we're considering.

Best used pickup truck under $25,000: 2015-2019 Ford F-150

For around $25,000, the best used pickup truck is the Ford F-150. We'd specifically look for a 2015 or later model to take advantage of the lighter weight and great capability offered by the aluminum-intensive construction Ford switched to starting that year. There are capable V6 engine options, up-level EcoBoost sixes in two sizes, and a durable 5.0-liter V8 engine to choose from. Naturally, buyers can pick between multiple cab and bed lengths, two- or four-wheel drive, and from all manner of trim levels that range from work truck-spec to full-zoot cowboy. If you're on a budget, aim for an XLT model for a solid compromise between price and equipment levels.

Best used pickup truck under $25,000 if you want something smaller: 2016-2019 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling midsize truck in America, and that means there are plenty to choose from. A redesign for the 2016 model year brought about welcome changes inside, out and underneath that make it a better truck than the models that came before. It's known to be a reliable machine with legitimate off-road capabilities when properly equipped, but it's not very comfortable. We'd suggest taking the Tacoma for an extended drive before signing on the dotted line, just to make sure you fit well in its low-slung cockpit and seats.

Best used pickup truck under $25,000 if you want a car-like experience: 2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline

If we had to pick one smaller truck to drive every single day and didn't need to tow more than 5,000 pounds or so, we'd go with the Honda Ridgeline. Unlike the similarly sized and priced Toyota Tacoma, the Honda Ridgeline uses a unibody chassis design that shares a lot of components with the Honda Pilot crossover. It's a lot more comfortable and quite a bit more efficient than most other trucks, and it can do more work than some would-be buyers give it credit for. Well worth a look if you're a casual pickup user.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse and 2024 GMC Acadia are much the same again, like they were when they debuted for the 2007 model year. At that time, they were both large midsize three-row SUVs that shared a platform and engines. Then, for the 2017 model year, the Acadia went its own way. It was still a three-row crossover, but it lost 7.2 inches of length, 3.4 inches of width, and about 700 pounds.

GM redesigned both the Traverse and Acadia for 2024, and the GMC is back on the bigger platform, offering the same engine as the Chevy. They’re also packaged much the same, and both take a step forward in technology. It’s pretty close to badge engineering again, but they have some notable differences. Let’s take a deeper look to see how they differ.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71

2024 GMC Acadia AT4

GMC Acadia vs. Chevy Traverse: Styling

Both models get a more masculine, upright look inspired by the full-size pickups and SUVs in their families. Don’t let that fool you, though. These are still unibody crossovers rather than body-on-frame beasts. The main differences are borne out by the design language of each brand. Their squared-off jaws are fronted by large grilles. While the Traverse has squinting eye LED headlights, the Acadia’s LEDs take on a C-shape. Both have different grille textures depending on the model.

Along the sides, they share similar body sculpting. But the Traverse sports a floating rear pillar look that starts just behind the second row, while the Acadia extends its greenhouse all the way to the third seating row to provide better outward vision to those seated there as well as the driver.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse RS

2024 Chevrolet Traverse RS

2024 Chevrolet Traverse RS

2024 GMC Acadia Denali

GMC Acadia vs. Chevy Traverse: Interior technology and seating

Chevy and GMC use the latest version of GM’s infotainment system with Google built-in, but they have a different form factor. The Traverse gets a 17.7-inch horizontally oriented center touchscreen, while the Acadia has a 15.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Both also have a standard 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster. The systems are easy to use and they still get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto even though GM is moving toward eliminating smartphone integration.

For 2024, GMC only offers the Acadia with seven-passenger seating that includes second-row captain’s chairs and a third-row bench seat. The Traverse comes standard with three-row benches in the second and third rows, and offers second-row captain’s chairs as standard on the Z71 and RS trims. The Chevy also offers cloth upholstery in lower-end models, while every GMC has synthetic leather or leather. Power-folding second and third rows are standard for the Acadia Denali, and the Traverse has only a power-folding third row, and only in the RS model.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71

GMC Acadia vs. Chevrolet Traverse: Prices and features

GMC prices the Acadia higher than the Traverse, but also adds more standard equipment. It’s offered in Elevation, AT4, and Denali trims, while the Traverse comes in LS, LT, Z71, and RS trims.

The Acadia Elevation starts at $43,995, including $1,395 for destination, and all-wheel drive adds another $2,000. Standard equipment includes synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats with 8-way power adjustments, a heated steering wheel, an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster, a 15.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, a satellite radio trial, remote start, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a power tailgate, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The Traverse starts at $38,995 for a front-wheel-drive LS model. It has seating for eight rather than seven, cloth upholstery instead of synthetic leather, a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, and 18-inch alloy wheels instead of 20s. It also lacks the standard phone charger, but gets the rest of the base Acadia’s features.

The Acadia AT4 and Traverse Z71 are the off-road models, and they share much of the same equipment and engineering, including all-wheel drive with a twin-clutch rear differential, a trailering package, additional off-road drive modes, an extra 1.2 inches of ground clearance, a front underbody skid plate, front tow hooks, and 18-inch all-terrain tires. The Acadia AT4 runs $51,395, while the Z71 costs $47,995. The Chevy still has cloth upholstery, while the GMC has synthetic leather.

At the top of the lineup, the $55,695 Denali comes loaded with leather upholstery, driver’s seat memory, cooled front seats, heated outboard rear seats, power-folding second- and third-row seats, a head-up display, and a power tilt/telescoping steering column.

The Traverse RS costs $56,090 and comes with much of the same equipment. It lacks the head-up display and power-folding second-row, but has 22-inch wheels instead of 20s, a power-folding third-row seat, a panoramic sunroof (which is optional on the Acadia Denali), and a 10-speaker Bose audio system instead of the Acadia’s 12-speaker version.

2024 GMC Acadia AT4

GMC Acadia vs. Chevrolet Traverse: Which is right for you?

They’re two sides of the same coin. The Traverse and Acadia serve the same buyers. The Acadia costs a little more, and has a few extra features model for model, but the Traverse lacks none of the Acadia’s safety features, power, or even most of its luxury equipment, and the RS model even has some features the Acadia lacks. That makes the Traverse a generally better buy, but that can change for people who want the extra equipment or the GMC look.

JEEP ® BRAND ELECTRIFIED TECHNOLOGY HOW WILL YOU POWER THE ADVENTURE?

All-electric or plug-in hybrid—choose from two dynamic 4xe technologies, each engineered to deliver an uncompromising and epic journey.

ALL-ELECTRIC, PURE ADVENTURE

Jeep® Brand Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) trade a traditional combustion engine for electric motors and run on pure electricity. A cutting-edge battery emits zero emissions while powering the vehicle into action.

THE BLUEPRINT FOR ALL-ELECTRIC ADVENTURE

Yes, you can have both.

Jeep® Brand plug-in hybrid technology pairs a traditional gas engine with an electric motor for dynamic power and range.

When in Electric Mode, Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrid vehicles offer near silent pure EV-driven performance. Plus, you can adjust the electric output to suit different driving conditions, recharge and do it all over again.

HYBRID MODES AND MECHANICS HYBRID MODES AND MECHANICS MAXIMUM HORSEPOWER MEETS INSTANT TORQUE

Hybrid mode.

The default Hybrid Mode combines torque from both the 2.0L turbocharged engine and the electric motor. This combination provides maximum horsepower, instant torque and thrilling acceleration. In this mode, electric power is consumed first.

ELECTRIC MODE

When the battery has more than a 1% charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for near-zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles on Wrangler 4xe and up to 25 miles on Grand Cherokee 4xe.

eSave Mode prioritizes the 2.0L engine, saving battery charge for later use. When power demand is low, the engine shuts off. It can also be reconfigured to increase the battery charge as well.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING

This feature allows the battery to be charged when decelerating and braking. The Max Regeneration feature remaps the accelerator pedal to command more aggressive regeneration at low pedal positions. It allows you to slow the vehicle down without the brake pedal, but a complete stop always requires the brake pedal. It also stays selected until you turn it off.

The battery can be fully charged in approximately 2 hours using an available Level 2 charger (240-volt), or 12 hours using the included Level 1 charger (120-volt). With the ability to charge at home and work, you can enjoy the benefits of fully electric daily commutes.

THREE WAYS TO CHARGE

There are three levels of electric charging. Each offers different charging times and options between battery electric and plug-in hybrid technologies.

EASY AT-HOME CHARGER INSTALLATION

Our partners at Qmerit make at-home available Level 2 charger installation simple. For most home configurations, it’s as easy as providing some information about your home layout and electrical panel. The free estimate takes 5-10 minutes, and you decide when to move forward.

Chrysler recalls over 200,000 SUVs, trucks due to software malfunction: See affected vehicles

is a dodge journey a suv

Chrysler is recalling 211,581 vehicles due to a software malfunction where the ABS control module may disable the electronic stability control system, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Driving with a disabled electronic stability control system can increase the risk of a crash," the NHTSA said in the recall notice. The recall affects certain 2022 Dodge Durango and Ram 2500 and 3500 vehicles made by Stellantis-owned Chrysler, the NHTSA said.

Affected products include certain:

  • 2022 Dodge Durango
  • 2022 Ram 2500
  • 2022 Ram 3500

Dealers will update the ABS control module free or charge, the notice says, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. The recall number is 55B.

Other recent car recalls: Kia, Honda and Toyota

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued  multiple recalls  last week, including notices for over  460,000 Kia Telluride vehicles  that could catch fire while parked or driving.

The automobile manufacturer said the front power seat motor may overheat due to a stuck power seat slide knob. As a result, this can cause a vehicle to catch fire while parked or driving. A car that catches on fire increases the risk of injury, the  NHTSA report  said.

The automobile manufacturer is warning drivers with the affected vehicles to park outside and away from buildings until the recall repair is complete.

Honda  is recalling 114,686 of its 2018-2020 Fit and 2019-2022 HR-V vehicles that were previously recalled under NHTSA recall number 23V-046.

The rearview camera image may not display when the engine is started with a key. This defect occurs because of a design error in the audio display power circuit. If the rearview camera fails to show what is behind the driver’s vehicle, it will increase the risk of a crash, the  NHTSA report  said.

Toyota  is recalling 102,092 of its 2022-2023 Tundra and Lexus LX600 vehicles that are equipped with a V35A engine.

In the  NHTSA report , the automobile manufacturer said that debris from the manufacturing process may contaminate the engine and cause the main bearings to fail. This can cause the vehicle’s engine to stall and cause a loss of drive power. A loss of drive power will increase the risk of a crash.
