Planning a trip to Vegas can be a tricky business. How do you choose what to pack into a 2-day Las Vegas itinerary? Luckily, I’m here to help, with a whole load of great suggestions for things to do in Las Vegas. From chilling out at the Bellagio fountains to quad biking through Death Valley, I’ve got you covered. Here’s how to plan your 2-day Las Vegas itinerary!

Amazing Things to Do In Las Vegas

1. enjoy the view from the high roller observation wheel.

If you’re planning a 2-day Las Vegas itinerary, one of the best ways to start is with a ride on the epic observation wheel known as the High Roller . At a whopping 550 feet tall, the High Roller is the biggest observation wheel in the world, and is perfectly located at the heart of the Las Vegas LINQ, surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants.

Tickets include a spot in an air-conditioned compartment with unbeatable views over the Las Vegas Strip. Each revolution takes around 30 minutes, and you’ll enjoy an entertaining audio guide with plenty of fun facts about the city and its colourful history. 2. Visit The Grand Canyon

The national park offers plenty of safe hiking trails, including the popular South Rim Trail, where keen walkers can stretch their legs in some of Arizona’s finest scenery. Without doubt, the Grand Canyon is a bucket-list destination, and one of the best ways to experience it is to admire the view from the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass walkway that takes you high above the canyon floor, providing a dizzying vista over this natural wonder.

You don’t need to gamble to have a great time in Las Vegas, but stepping inside the city’s legendary casinos is a pretty cool experience!

I’d always recommend setting a budget for what you’re prepared to lose, just in case you get carried away, but you really don’t need to spend much to enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of the slot machines. Visit one of the iconic venues such as Caesar’s Palace or enjoy the Fremont Street experience, then head out and blow your winnings on a shopping spree at the Forum Shops!

4. Admire The Bellagio Fountains

The Bellagio Hotel is a Las Vegas landmark, known best for the elaborate water fountains that grace the front of the resort. There are over a thousand fountains which shoot water up more than 450 feet into the air at regular intervals throughout the day. It’s quite the spectacle!

Visit after dark for the most magical displays, and enjoy the accompanying sound and light shows before you head off for an evening’s entertainment. This is one of the most romantic things to do in Las Vegas for couples, and even better, it won’t cost you a cent!

5. Head To Death Valley

Despite its somewhat ominous name, Death Valley is one of the most impressive places for a day trip outside of Las Vegas. It’s one of the hottest places on earth, with unique geology, flora and fauna. It also includes Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the United States.

This is a great spot for movie fans to visit, as Death Valley was used extensively for the filming of Star Wars: A New Hope . The eerie rocks and stark landscape certainly makes it look like it’s come straight out of a fantasy movie!

If the thrills of the casino aren’t quite enough for you, this awesome Las Vegas Go-Karting experience will take your trip to the next level. You’ll have the chance to speed your way around a 2,100-foot racetrack designed to test even the most experienced race-drivers, all while driving your very own gas-powered kart.

With hairpin bends, double apex corners and plenty of space for fast acceleration, this track is not for the faint hearted, and is sure to get the adrenaline pumping!

7. Climb the Eiffel Tower

Enjoy a little taste of France as you head 46 stories up to the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas . Modelled on the French original, the Las Vegas Eiffel Tower might be half the size of its Parisian counterpart, but the views are worth the trip!

This iconic piece of the Las Vegas skyline offers unique panoramic views over the city, the Bellagio fountains and the Las Vegas Strip. You’ll ride to the top in a super-fast glass elevator, which is an experience in itself!

8. Take A Hike In Red Rock Canyon

Just 17 miles from the Las Vegas strip, Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is a fantastic place to visit if you’re looking for a little respite from the bright lights of Sin City. There are miles of hiking trails, as well as areas for scenic drives, hot air balloon rides, mountain biking, horseback riding and rock climbing.

The spectacular desert landscape offers magnificent views at every turn, and the eponymous glowing red rocks mean that you’ll have plenty of photo opportunities and Instagram snaps! Come for a breath of fresh air, and learn more about the rare and delicate wildlife in this desert ecosystem.

9. See The Sharks At Mandalay Bay

One of the best things to do in Las Vegas besides gambling is to take a trip to the aquarium! The Shark Reef Aquarium in Mandalay Bay is a feast for the senses, especially after a few days spent in Arizona’s dry, dusty desert landscapes. Here, you’ll head underwater to a marine world populated by sharks, rays, horseshoe crabs and countless other underwater creatures, some of which you can get really close to in the specially-designed touch pools.

You have lots of options when it comes to putting together a Las Vegas itinerary . It depends on what you want to do and see, as well as how many days you have in the city.

How many days to spend in Vegas

It’s hard to see all of Las Vegas in a day, but if you’re short on time, two days is enough. Ideally, I recommend planning a 3-day trip to Vegas so you can see all the top attractions.

For some ideas on how to plan a trip to Vegas , here are sample itineraries for one, two, and three days.

1-day Las Vegas itinerary

Begin your  day in Las Vegas  by visiting the  Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . You can catch the  Hop-On/Hop-Off bus there and take it to Downtown Las Vegas, where you can explore this entertainment area.

Then, go to The Venetian  and check out  Madame Tussauds  and the  gondola rides  at the  Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later, head to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller  during sunset. At night, walk to the  Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the  Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best  free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a  ticket  (It is also included at the  Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass ).

Seeing the  Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign  is a rite of passage, so start there. This is also where you can catch the  Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will transport you around the Strip.

If you like thrill rides, stop at  New York-New York ‘s  Big Apple Coaster  before continuing downtown. Then you can do the  Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour , one of the best  things to do in downtown Las Vegas .

Later on, head to the  LINQ Promenade , where you can eat, shop, and ride the  High Roller . You can also get awesome views from the 1,149-foot-tall  SkyPod  at  the STRAT . The SkyPod has a late-night bar and lounge, so it’s the perfect place to wrap up a  Las Vegas couples itinerary .

A  Las Vegas weekend itinerary  is ideal because you can experience some  daytime activities in Las Vegas  before diving into the nightlife.

First, take a break from the Strip with a half-day  Hoover Dam tour . When you return to Vegas, take a quick break, then do go to a  pool party in Las Vegas.  If that’s not your thing, you can take in the scene at  Fremont Street , perhaps with a ride on the  SlotZilla zip line  or a visit to the  Mob Museum , one of the  best Las Vegas museums .

At night, walk to the  Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the  Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best  free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a  ticket  (It is also included at the  Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass ).

If you feel it’s to early to go to bed, grab cocktails at a swanky casino or do a bar crawl .

Ideally, I recommend at least 3 days for your Las Vegas trip so you can fully enjoy all the top attractions. Spend your first day taking the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour , starting at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign .

As you make your way along the Strip, stop by The Venetian , where you can see the wax figures at Madame Tussauds and take a gondola ride at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later on, check out the entertainment and attractions at the LINQ Promenade . If you perfectly time your ride on the High Roller , you can catch the Bellagio Fountains water show from the observation wheel.

The next morning, get in a nice swim or sunbathe at your hotel’s pool before the day gets too hot. Then, check out a Las Vegas museum , like the Mob Museum or the Erotic Heritage Museum .

In the afternoon, get a spectacular view of the city by taking a Las Vegas Strip Helicopter tour , a premium attraction with the Go Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass .

Afterwards, grab dinner and drinks at Señor Frogs.

Spend your last day taking an adventure to one of the nearby national parks. I recommend this full-day bus tour to the Grand Canyon West Rim and Hoover Dam .

Once you get back to Sin City, you can eat something and get refreshed before taking in a Las Vegas show .

The best time to visit Las Vegas depends on what you’d like to see and do in Sin City. Thanks to its pleasant weather year-round, there isn’t necessarily a bad time to visit, but there are times when it’s more crowded and expensive.

• Best months for good weather:  March and September boast beautiful weather, so you’ll be able to maximize your outdoor time.
• Cheapest month to visit: January is one of the best times to book a Vegas hotel since prices usually drop after the holidays.

Getting to Las Vegas Nevada

Las Vegas or Vegas is located in the state of Nevada in the southern United States. It is easy to get to Vegas from any part of the world by flying. 

There are plenty of flights available, and without breaking the bank. The closest international airport is the McCarran International Airport (now renamed Harry Reid International Airport), and it is about 8 km (5 miles) away from downtown Vegas. 

To get to the Strip or downtown, you can either 

• Hop on the airport shuttle and get to the hotels located on the Strip in 10 minutes. Rates are $20 – $30 USD. Centennial Express Line takes you to downtown Vegas for $6 USD per person
• Without a shuttle, you can book a private transfer from the airport for yourself and your loved ones

Note : Before you plan your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Las Vegas, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance for the USA if you are traveling from outside the country.

When to stay in Vegas?

For a short trip to Sin City, we recommend staying at any of the hotels on the Strip as that is where all the action and entertainment are. 

The downtown area is the original gambling hub and a venue for cultural events and the free Downtown Loop Shuttle.

To make the most of your visit to Las Vegas, we recommend staying in any of these hotels:

• The Bellagio (avg. $1250/night): The Bellagio is one of the well-known luxury hotels in the heart of the Strip. The rooms are beautiful and there is a pool on-site which is free for guests to use. Don’t miss the Bellagio fountain show here! Check current prices here
• The Venetian (avg. $450/night): Another European-themed hotel, the Venetian is great if you love a nice breakfast, shopping, and of course the luxury suites. Check availability for the Venetian here
• Excalibur Hotel & Casino (avg. $200/night): Excalibur is one of the affordable hotels (with a casino on site) on the Strip. Rooms are decent, with many offering views of the city and hotel surroundings with their castle-like structure. Find current prices here

Note that most hotels on the Strip will charge a resort fee which is additional to the nightly rates. Resort fees are around $30-$45 USD per night.

Las Vegas has only a couple of hostels, since most people who come here like to splurge for the moment. Still, if you want to stay in one, there are some options:

• Bungalows Hostel

The best part about staying near the Strip is you get to see the maximum number of shows possible. Tix4 Vegas has booths at Showcase Mall, Casino Royale, and some other outlets where you can buy tickets at a 50% discount for shows on that night.

The nightlife in Sin City is incredible, so do not forget to enjoy a cocktail at any of the rooftop bars in Las Vegas. 

Always keep a map of Las Vegas in your hand so you can move to the attraction you want in a planned manner, which will make your 2 day itinerary easier.

Day 1 of Las Vegas 2 day itinerary: Breakfast, walk or bus tour of the Vegas Strip and Fremont Street Experience, Old Mormon Fort State Park, Neon Museum, Stratosphere Tower, Mermaid Show, Dinner

Your two-day Vegas itinerary is going to be jam-packed, so book your hotel at the Strip rather than the city centre since you will be spending the best part of the evening here. 

Going to a hotel elsewhere to freshen and coming back will result in a loss of valuable time backtracking to the Strip which is best visited at night.

Breakfast 

An efficient route is key to the success of any itinerary so start the morning at the north part of the Strip and walk your way down south. But first, we will fuel up for your one day with a hearty breakfast at the Peppermill restaurant.

The outlet has been serving traditional dishes since 1982 and both the location and the 80s interior have remained unchanged to date, with even the waiters wearing the same long black gowns they used to don years ago.

The servings come with hash browns, muffins, and toast, and are large enough to easily feed two people. Don’t worry if you overeat, because you will need all the energy for the next couple of hours, once you set out to explore the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas Strip (10:00 am to 3:00 pm)

Exploring the Vegas Strip is a top tourist activity as there are plenty of free attractions and photo opportunities. 

Plus who knows if you enter a casino it may be your lucky day and you may make enough money to cover up your trip.

The strip extends from Mandalay Bay in the south to the SkyPod casino towards the northern end. Incidentally, this is where the country’s tallest observation wheel is located.

You can walk down the 8 km (5 miles) of the Strip if you are up to it or make use of the Deuce bus service which runs continually from the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas to the Las Vegas Boulevard at the southern end. 

A two-hour pass is $6 while a 24-hour pass is $8. You can buy the tickets on the bus itself. 

An alternate option is to book a 1 or 2 day hop on and hop off sightseeing bus tour

But before you do all this, visit the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign and then catch the hop-on/hop-off bus to the Strip to explore the entertainment area.

Some of the key crowd favorites on the Strip are:

Bellagio Fountain and Casino : Easily one of the most iconic spots in the city and for good reason too. This place is more than a casino and even people who don’t gamble, marvel at the diverse amenities and attractions available.

Once in fifteen minutes, people passing through the hotel are greeted by the iconic Bellagio fountain show with a stunning light and water display. Within the Bellagio, you will find an excellent art gallery, a 14,000-square-foot botanical garden, several restaurants, and a variety of nightlife options.

Walking the Bellagio is free, but you will need to pay plenty if you want to drink and eat. The Bellagio is open to visitors 24×7.

Grand Canal: The Venetian Casino located on the Strip has been constructed by highlighting Venice and includes its very own Grand Canal complete with gondola rides.

Those who prefer to spend time here will be rewarded with a taste of the Queen of the Adriatic with stilt walkers, and singers to recreate a scene you will find in the real Venice.

Between 10:00 am and 11:00 pm (or 12:00 on some nights), you can enjoy a gondola ride on the Grand Canal. Though a bit overpriced, you just cannot beat the romantic ambiance. Entrance is free but the on-site attractions are not.

Pro tip: Opt for a visit to Madame Tussauds with a gondola boat ride at the Venetian. At Madame Tussauds, you can check out over 80 (wax statues of) celebrities, and strike that pose for Instagram. This ticket includes a museum entry and the gondola ride!

The Mob Museum: This institution takes visitors back to the era when organized crime was rife in the United States and also provides insight into the complex gaming schemes. Here you will learn all about the gangsters who operated here and the committed GI men and FBI officers who tracked them down.

The federal courthouse features a number of interactive exhibitions about the country’s mob history. The Mob Museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Fremont Street: This section of downtown Vegas may seem past its prime but slowly but surely Fremont Street is vying for visitors’ attention compared to the Strip. The Fremont Street Experience spans several blocks from the Mob Museum with the “Viva Vision” a 600,000-watt sound system a key attraction here.

Apart from the food stands and gift shops, the 11 storey high SlotZilla zip line is the other attraction. Fremont Street is accessible night and day with the Deuce Bus being the most convenient mode of transport to get there.

Cirque du Soleil: When it comes to entertainment, Las Vegas shows the way, little wonder that the performing company of Cirque du Soleil occupies center stage. Literally meaning “Sun Circus”, the spectacular acrobatic feats accomplished here have to be seen to be believed.

The shows are influenced by cultural elements, like the “O” at the Bellagio uses water in the acrobatic acts, and the “Love” performance at Casino The Mirage pays homage to the Beatles. Enjoyed by all ages, tickets to the Cirque du Soleil show can be pricey, but it’s worth the money as the presentations are brilliant.

Old Mormon Fort State Park (3:00 pm to 4:00 pm)

Being the first non-native settlement in Las Vegas Valley, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park is full of historical attractions which are worth a visit.

Located right next to the Natural History Museum , the visitor centre at the entrance of the park displays many photos and exhibits dating back to the lives of the Mormon missionaries who built this fort in 1885. 

As it is a short distance from the city centre, the fort is a good stopover on the way to see other attractions of Las Vegas.

Neon Museum (4:00 pm to 5:00 pm)

A six minute walk from the Mormon Fort will bring you to the Neon Museum where the majority of the exhibits are displayed in an open courtyard full of antiques and artwork. 

A visit to the museum will provide you with a refreshing way to admire the artwork, unlike the usual ambiance of a closed-door building. 

Most of the items are locally sourced and apart from history, you will discover how Las Vegas became such a popular tourist destination. 

The original “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign dates back to the 1930s.

Stratosphere Tower (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm)

The Stratosphere Tower is an iconic landmark of Las Vegas towering high above the skyline of the city and visible from almost anywhere in the city. 

It is touted as the largest free-standing viewing tower in the United States. 

If you time it right and get there by sunset you can witness incredible views of how the city lights eventually drown out the rays of the setting sun.

Several heart-pumping rides are on offer here including Big Shot, Sky Jump, Insanity, and others all available on the rooftop at 1149′ above the city floor.

Mermaid show (7:00 pm to 8:00 pm)

The Silverton Hotel and Casino feature a free mermaid show which is well worth watching. 

Though not exactly on the Strip it is only five miles away and undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Las Vegas. 

After performing spectacular stunts the mermaids interact with visitors and pose for photos. Apart from the mermaid show, there are daily stingray feeding sessions, which are not only free but educational as well.

Dinner (8:00 pm to 9:00 pm)

There are scores of restaurants on the Strip to satisfy your culinary cravings. If you love steaks the Primal Steakhouse is unbeatable. 

If you are a sushi fan, Chin Chin is the perfect place to head to.

Craving Italian food? Visit the Il Fornaio Las Vegas restaurant located in the New York New York hotel – we loved it here!

The area also has an abundance of Indian, Japanese, and Southeast Asian restaurants. No matter where you dine, fuel up well for the rest of the evening ahead.

That said, the Eiffel Tower restaurant, an icon of the skyline of the city, is located 34 stories up and is a replica of the world-famous monument of Paris, albeit on a half-scale. 

There is no better way of enjoying views of the sparkling city from the viewing deck.

Las Vegas Night Scene (after 9:00 pm)

A great day to cap off your 24-hour visit and give a respite to your weary feet is seeing a Las Vegas night show. 

While Cirque du Soleil immediately comes to one’s mind, there are many many more to keep you entertained. 

The shows are held at hotels or other venues along the Strip. Check out X Burlesque at the Flamingo Hotel or X Rocks at the Bally Hotel and Casino.

If you are not very exhausted from the day’s wandering around, you can go to any of the city’s nightclubs where drinking and dancing go on till the early hours of the morning. 

The Lily Bar at the Bellagio and the Hakkasn at the MGM Grand are two prominent names that come to one’s mind. 

For Asian-themed fun, head to the Tao Club located near the Grand Canal. A great way to end your gondola ride.

Day 2 of Las Vegas itinerary 2 days: Day trip to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon, High Roller Ferris Wheel at night

On day 2 of this Vegas weekend itinerary, go on a day trip to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon National Park. Both the south and the west rim highlights are possible to see in a day. 

The distance from Las Vegas varies from two hours to the West Rim and five hours to the impressive South Rim. No matter which one you choose, the views from the rim are incredible.

You can also opt for a day tour that also includes pick up/drop off and meals. 

Tour options from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon : 

• Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon South
• Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon West (lunch included in both, pick up and drop off from the Strip can be arranged)

 Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is an easy destination to access from Las Vegas as it is under an hour’s drive from the city. As many as 3000 people visit this curved architectural marvel each day. 

Traveling by car gives you the added option to explore some memorable sights en route like the Arizona Hot Springs. Just follow I-515 out of Vegas till it merges with I-11 which will take you directly to Hoover Dam.

On a day tour, you will get to explore the dam site, and also watch a short video film about the history of the dam and some of the interactive exhibits on display. 

Stunning views of the Colorado River, Black Canyon, and Lake Meads can be enjoyed from the top of the dam.

Grand Canyon

From the Hoover Dam, the tour makes its way to the Grand Canyon Village – for lunch. And after this stop, you will explore the national park.

Easily one of the greatest wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon attracts millions of visitors each year, and those who come from Las Vegas choose either to come by car, tour or helicopter.

On a guided tour, you can take in the views from various observation platforms, go on a short, but easy hike and check out the informative displays and the souvenir shops.

Because of the time and distance involved, many visitors opt to take a trip by helicopter, particularly popular for those short on time. 

This tour offers unparalleled views of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and not to forget Las Vegas from high up in the sky.

After a day full of sightseeing, return to the Strip in the evening. 

Tonight, experience the High Roller Ferris Wheel with a drink in hand. The High Roller observation wheel is the tallest in North America at 550 feet high.

Getting off the tourist trail in Las Vegas may take some doing, but your trip to Sin City does not have to revolve around only the Strip and gambling. On your second day, you can also avoid a day trip, and instead, stay back in Vegas for more sightseeing and shopping!

Often overlooked by tourists, the Arts District is where you will find where the locals spend their time getting creative.

If you can find some more free time or extra days, there are some spectacular places to explore on a day trip from Las Vegas. In fact, Sin City has the advantage of being close to a number of top cities and national parks.

Red Rock Canyon

• Driving time: 20 minutes+ one way

Simply take the I-159 visitors bus from Las Vegas and you will reach Red Rock canyon visitor centre in just half an hour. 

If you are using a car then you have the advantage of exploring all the trails at your own pace. This nature park has nineteen different hiking paths and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

The highlight for visitors is stunning rock canyon formations and the scenic A 13 mile drive. 

A guided tour is the best way to see all the sights of the canyon including stops at Calico Hills and the neighboring Spring Mountain State Park.

Death Valley National Park

• Tour: Here is a 10 hour full day tour from Las Vegas
• Driving time: 2 hours one way

Despite being regarded as the driest and lowest place in North America, Death Valley offers a number of fabulous activities, including a paleontology tour to please dinosaur fans. 

Death Valley is a two-hour drive through I-95 and then a stretch on route 374 after Beatty. Traveling by car gives you the flexibility to explore everything at leisure.

The visitor centre is the best place to start a tour of the valley as well as Scotty’s Castle in Grapevine Canyon, an incredible expanse of land in an oasis just ninety minutes from the Visitor Centre. 

A guided tour is best if you are short on time and takes you to the main sights like Furnace Creek Ranch and Rhyolite Ghost Town.

Weather and sightseeing

Las Vegas is a pleasant year-round destination, but there are months when it tends to get extremely crowded as well as expensive. 

If you can plan for it, travel in January as prices at a Vegas hotel drop dramatically after the holidays. Plus the weather is a lot nicer and not hot.

The weather in Las Vegas during the summer is extremely hot, so if you are visiting during this season, carry a lot of water and wear loose and light-colored clothes.

Bookings and budget

Traveling on a budget to Las Vegas is not always straightforward as it depends on the time you go, where you stay, how you choose to move around and the activities you want to tick off from your must-see list. 

Fortunately, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority conducts an annual survey to gauge the costs for a day in the city.

• If you are backpacking, expect to spend $75 per day, staying in a dorm and cooking your own meals. Add $10-20 if you plan on drinking. 
• A mid-range traveler will spend $180 per day in a budget hotel and eating in cheap restaurants. 
• A luxury stay will cost you $390 per day in a hotel on the Strip, eating in mid-range restaurants, and hiring a car for a day trip.

Additionally, try and skip the weekends as you can enjoy significantly reduced room rates and restaurant prices on other days of the week.

Cab drivers charge a $3 card service if you pay the fare through a credit card. So avoid this charge by paying in cash.

Another tip: If you are gambling in a casino and happen to lose you can reimburse a part of your losses in the form of free meals and discounted show tickets and rooms. Make sure to ask about this beforehand.

Food and restaurants

To save on food, dine at all-you-can-eat joints where you can enjoy buffets at $20-30 per meal and really fill your tummy up.

If you want to eat at five-star restaurants, avoid the peak 8-10 times. Instead, dine between 4-7 to avail of happy hour discounts and pre-show menus to kick off the evening.

Most restaurants stop serving food after 10.30 pm, but since most of the performers finish after this time there are some outlets that stay open till 11:00 pm where you can have a round of food and drinks for as little as $5.

Whether you are a solo male or female traveler, Las Vegas is safe to visit, but like big cities caution is advised wherever you go. If you stick to the Strip and Fremont Street you will be relatively safe.

Be wary of buying tickets from street vendors, especially those for major events. 

Always carry water and sunscreen and if you are traveling by car do not leave any valuables in it overnight. 

Forward your Vegas weekend itinerary to your family members so that they are aware of where you are.

It’s impossible to see all of Las Vegas in one day, as a three day trip would be better. That said, since you are short on time you can opt for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour which will cover all the top attractions.

You can squeeze quite a bit in 2 days in Las Vegas. In terms of sightseeing in Vegas, you will be fine exploring the Strip and checking off the Fremont Street Experience on the first day.  Quick shopping city is also possible. Then head out to state parks nearby or the Seven Magic Mountains.  For a more relaxed weekend trip, 3 days will be amazing, where you can sightsee, indulge in outdoor activities, dine and shop!

For the cheapest times, the off-season is the best time to visit Las Vegas, particularly from late September to November and January to March.

Yea, absolutely. I have been to Las Vegas multiple times and it surely is more than gambling. On a 2 day trip, focus on the Strip – take in the sights and shows, and add some outdoor time.  You can also strictly stay in Vegas both days (without a day trip) and go shopping at outlet malls, or enjoy dining and museum visits – lots to do, but 2 day Las Vegas city break is worth it!

The Best Time To Visit Las Vegas

Because Vegas sits in the Nevada desert, the weather can get pretty extreme. In the summer, temperatures can peak above 100°F, which can feel too uncomfortable for many. In contrast, Vegas gets very cold in the winter, sometimes going below freezing. 

The best time to spend a weekend in Vegas is during the spring (March to May) or in the fall (September to November). During these months the weather is much more pleasant. 

That said, if you wish to experience Vegas during the holiday season, you’ll find fun things to do in Vegas during Christmas .

In terms of crowds, early fall, when the schools have just gone back, is when Vegas is the quietest. You’ll find the best hotel deals during summertime, though, when it’s too hot for many. So, if you can handle the heat, you could snag a bargain then.

When you arrive in Vegas, you’ll likely want to check out The Strip straight away. Las Vegas Boulevard is a 4-mile entertainment promenade that never sleeps. So even if you arrive early in the morning, there will still be plenty to do and see here. 

Different sections of the strip have different themes, such as Venice and Paris styles. Moreover, some parts are super flashy too, which feels like a buffet for the eyes!

One must-see attraction on the strip is The Venetian . This upscale hotel characterizes the Italian city of Venice. It features a canal with authentic working gondolas and shops and restaurants built with impressive Italian architecture. 

Be sure to hop in a gondola and cruise down the indoor/outdoor canal taking in the magnificent sights and atmosphere. 

Regardless of how many days in Vegas you have, seeing the famous water show at The Bellagio should not be missed. This renowned hotel attracts thousands of visitors every day to watch the impressive choreographed water fountain show, complete with lights and music. 

The show takes place every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. I recommend seeing it both in the daytime and at night. 

After grabbing lunch at one of the many restaurants on the strip, check out The Forum Shops at Caesar’s for some retail therapy or just window shopping. This premium shopping mall has all the well-known brands such as Versace, Gucci, Tiffany & Co, and many more. 

When your feet get tired, head across to another of Vegas’s top attractions, The High Roller . This observation wheel is the tallest in the world.

It was very cold because the air conditioner was on high power, and my son got sick.

3 hours late and all they have is was a $12 meal voucher. That’s not even enough to cover fast food.

Among the poorest flights I’ve had with Delta in a while. Entertainment system failed completely on a 7.5 hr flight. Crew seemed distracted and not the normal friendly crew. Flight overbooked it seemed… very crowded.

If I can, I always fly Delta. I’ve found their service to always be reliable and pleasant.

You could have not cancelled the flight (AA, which I will be flying from now on) left for BOS despite the fictitious weather issues (that no one in my Boston family could see). You could have rebooked my direct flight to another direct flight instead of sending me though JFK, the worst US airport after O’Hara You could have rebooked me on a Main Cabin seat (like the one I paid for in my original ticket instead of putting me a the last row on JFK->BOS leg, pocketing the difference in ticket price But I do not really care whether you will ever do that in a future because in a future neither I nor anyone from my company (unless they pay out of pocket) nor an of my clients and partners (if they heed my advice) will ever be caught dead on any of Delta flights

It was good until there was a 3 hour delay because there was not any pilots to fly the plane.

There was plenty of overhead room but half of the passengers were told they had to check their carryon bags. My partner and I checked in as early as possible and our seats were split across the aisle.

It is a modern tragedy that any airline expects you to travel for 14 hours in such discomfort and that the only way to add comfort is exorbitant prices. I was in pain by the time we landed. Shameful.

No real agent onsite helping you for missing luggage there. Not like the other airline next to UA desk, they have staff attending in their desk assisting answer/helping luggage issue, even after midnight.

Horrible, the flights kept delaying, so it is obvious that we won't be able to make it to the next connection. No easier/real agent on site to help you figure this out. UA agent on other counters refuse to assist you and direct us to use the QR code/call customer service. So inefficient and poor. While technology seems convenient, but it's not the best interest/experience for customers need help while there is active issue need assistance.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Seats are weirdly bent, I felt hunched the entire time.

Paid for premium economy had no tv the whole time the crew tried to reset/reboot but would not work they said they would put a trouble ticket in for it. We had 3 seats my tv was the only one that didn't work. They cancelled our flight re worked us on another that left us at airport over night on the floor I have a ten year old and a 78 diabetic mother which also had shingles and suffers from nerve pain in legs and back. Requested wheelchair service at all airports after the re route NO wheelchair service was there to help. WORST experience we have ever had. Went to American airlines assistance it was closed. I AM FURIOUS!!! I expect some sort of compensation from this traumatic experience and no need for flying points we don't plan on using American airlines again!!!!

The flight was sequentially delayed until it reached two hours. Apparently one pilot failed to show up.

This is by far the worst experience I have had with American Airlines. The start of this trip was a complete disaster. I purposely planned my trip so that I would weather any delays so that I could make very important meeting at the Pentagon. My flight was cancelled because of maintenance and I was put on the first flight the next day but I was late to the meeting. After a long week at the Pentagon I just wanted to go home and my flight home which was early in the day was delayed. Eventually the flight was delayed until the next day. I was not authorized a hotel room because DCA was my point of origin. So I paid for a hotel out of pocket. The flight this morning was boarded then deplaned because the aircraft was hot. The flow of information was not happening in DCA and made it worse when the news was bad. I am going to take a break from American for my next few military flights. Hopefully whatever has been going on with American Airlines will be resolved.

We had a 2 hour delay. The seats were smaller than most other airlines. The person in front of us wanted to lay back and we had to stop her because she was pressing against my girlfriend’s legs. We had to ask her to sit up and not lay back due to the lack of room.

My experience with Spirit was perfect. Did not expect it to be this good

My mother was HARASSED AND ACCOSTED by the gate agent for her bag. I pre purchased the bag fee and the gate agent made my 78 year old mother board, deplane, re pay for her bag fee and board again. The gate agent made my mother pick up her own bag and REFUSED to help her, she is an older woman who wasn’t bothering anyone on a flight that had maybe 30’total passengers. I am going to sue this airlines for their HORRIBLE customer service and treatment of my mother, and all this occurred the day after Mother’s Day!!!

Kayak does not know that spirit airlines charged me $70 to fly. But the bag check-in was $89 each way. This is false advertising to lure people. Spirit airlines sends bunch of emails after flight purchases to buy wifi, better seats, priority boarding, secure reserved seats. This is false advertising. Up front pricing. I would of flown jet blue or Alaska airlines.

I brought a ticket and car rental through Travelocity. There was no where to add a KTN. So I thought i’d add it by looking up ticket on frontier website. I tried 3 times with the frontier chat bot to add my KTN it never updated my boarding pass. So then I tried showing up early to do it in person at the airport. The first employee update my ktn in the system and gave me a new boarding pass. I was sent back by tsa to join regular line. Then I was told to add my Ktn. It would cost me $25 extra. Given the length of the cue I did pay. Congratulations! BUT I will NEVER fly frontier again. Plus the plane was very old. It had actual ashtrays and old looking tray backs. Worst travel experience ever. Im warning my friends and family not to use frontier ever.

I did not enjoy the trip home on Frontier for several reasons: there is too much cost besides the flight, which was more than I would normally pay, then having to pay for luggage, and carry-on, seat (if you want to reserve when booking) then you must pay over $3 for a can of soda, and $4 for a snack. A cup of water is free.

I find them barebones, the seats not particularly comfortable, the nickel and diming is maddening, the app is TERRIBLE - super confusing to navigate, and the last 4 frontier flights I have flown have been on AVERAGE 2 hours late, one ruining a fancy night out in Vegas with reservations made well in advance, which was nodded to with a measly 5000 miles, which translates to almost nothing. At least credit a free checked bag or something.

8 hr delay. had to buy another ticket with another airline

Four and a half hour delay in total. What frustrates me most is the poor communication and disorganization.

I appreciated the upgrade to free cary-on bag and seat selection at no charge

FRONTIER SUCKS! The agent downstairs tricked me into booking, just to get to the gate. At the gate, they told me they couldn't help. I then called Customer Service. They and the gate attendants kept blaming each other. Neither side was willing to help the customer.

The agent at check-in was strident, unwelcoming, and condescending to customers ahead of me.

Flight was delay 9hrs and nothing was provided at airport, had to go and get a room to sleep in, paid for Uber back and fort with no offers until we landed back home a 1hr later for a $75 voucher for a future flight.

I never stay in Las Vegas for more than 2 nights. This is my foolproof itinerary for maximizing a weekend in Sin City.

• I've been to Las Vegas many times in 20+ years and I no longer go there for more than two nights. 
• The perfect Las Vegas trip is weekend-long and has a lot of good food, plus some chill days. 
• I maximize my trip by booking a hotel on the Strip and eating at good Vegas restaurants .

I've been going to Las Vegas regularly since the early 2000s and have adopted a firm policy to never stay more than two nights.

Why? Everything I adore about Vegas the moment I get there — the mesmerizing lights, the crowds of excited people, the nonstop party vibe, the around-the-clock sounds of slot machines and club music, and 24/7 access to food and drinks galore — begins to sour quickly after 48 hours.

When I stay longer, by the time I'm ready to leave, I'm usually a bit hungover, my feet and wallet hurt, I'm sick of lavish meals, and I desperately need alone time.

A well-planned weekend trip also makes it possible for travelers to use fewer PTO days — although almost half of US workers don't take all of their paid time off each year anyway.

So, I've learned how to maximize my weekends in Sin City .

I tend to group my activities together based on their vibe, which means one day of action, one day of relaxation to prepare for a big night out, and one last day of chill activities before flying home.

It's the perfect formula. Here's how my cousin and I spent a weekend in Vegas on my most recent trip.

We stay busy as soon as we arrive on Friday

After arriving around noon, we headed to The Palazzo at the Venetian Resort — it's my Las Vegas hotel of choice because it's roughly in the middle of the Strip for easy access to just about everything.

Plus, the Uber pickup area is a short walk from rooms here — other resorts can feel like a long maze of rooms and hallways.

If my room isn't ready yet, I typically unwind at Flight Club at Grand Canal Shoppes (attached to the property) with a few rounds of darts or a drink at the life-size carousel bar.

On this trip, once it was time for pre-dinner drinks, we headed to Cheri Rooftop at the Paris Hotel for fun, tasty cocktails and a DJ spinning tunes.

We sat under the hotel's iconic Eiffel Tower, overlooking the Bellagio Fountain. It was a great atmosphere to get our evening started.

Next up was dinner at The Bedford By Martha Stewart , which is also in the Paris Hotel.

The restaurant is inspired by Stewart's 1925 farmhouse in Bedford, New York, and has some of the best roast chicken . I'd come here just for the spectacular bread basket, which can come loaded with rolls, flatbreads, and focaccia.

Then, we strolled over to Horseshoe Lose Vega to see Dita Von Teese's current residency. We saw her famous martini-glass bath, entire dance crew, and sparkling costumes.

After a nightcap at Sala 118 at the Venetian Resort around 11 p.m., we headed back to our hotel.

Saturday is usually the chill day on the itinerary

We got a late start with a 10 a.m. brunch at COMO Poolside Café at Bellagio before popping over to the Cypress Pool a few steps away — this adults-only pool has comfy chairs with umbrellas.

Although I could happily lay here all day, we had spa treatments at the Waldorf Astoria calling our name. I love sitting in the spa's mosaic-tile lounges while overlooking the Strip.

Next, we headed to one of the highlights of any trip to Vegas: high tea at the Tea Lounge at the Waldorf. The room and its views are incredible, and the tea selection and assortment of sandwiches, scones, and sweets are absolute perfection.

For dinner, we headed to KYU at Fontainebleau Las Vegas for incredibly flavorful Asian-inspired and wood-fired dishes. I won't soon forget the stone-pot Thai rice with confit duck and pork-belly bao buns with pastrami crust.

Lastly, live jazz music at Nowhere at Fontainebleau is always a great time and the perfect warm-up for a serious night of dancing at Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World.

The night we were there, T-Pain performed to a packed room of what seemed like one bachelorette party after the next.

Our last day starts slow, but we still do plenty

Getting back to the hotel at 4 a.m. meant a rough start on Sunday —the only reasonable cure was breakfast at Bouchon at The Venetian, where I could stuff my face with chef Thomas Keller's French pastries and truffle fries.

We needed some physical activity, so we headed to the PLAY Playground at Luxor. It has lifesize, immersive games, such as its version of the board game Operation and a parkour course.

Another cool spot to walk around is the Paradox Museum, which has various rooms with illusions that are pure Instagram gold.

Since our flight home wasn't until 7 p.m., we got an early dinner at Brasserie B at Caesar's Palace, one of Bobby Flay 's restaurants. I loved his twist on the blue-crab salad and the yellowtail crudo topped with caviar.

Finally, after an action-packed weekend, we headed back to the airport.

Some of the best day trips are just 20 minutes away, while others will take you away the entire day from sunrise to sunset (or beyond). Located in the Mojave Desert, there’s so much to see and do in the area. Here are some of the best ideas for things to do outside of Vegas!

1. Red Rock Canyon (one of the best things to do near Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 16 miles / 20 minutes

Perhaps one of the shortest day trips from Las Vegas is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It’s perfect for a full day of adventure away from the busy city, yet close enough for a quick drive.

One of the most popular things to do is the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive . This one-way, 13 mile drive takes you through the entire conservation area. Stop at Calico II to see the vibrant red sandstone rocks.

Bring grippy hiking shoes for the 2.2 mile hike on the Calico Tanks Trail . This fun, interactive hike requires a bit of scrambling to get to the viewpoint of the Las Vegas strip. So cool!

You’ll actually need a timed entry reservation to see the conservation area from October through May, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance! If you can’t grab a spot, consider booking a Red Rock Canyon hiking tour which includes park entry.

Of course, come prepared with enough water and high protein snacks. If you’re hiking be sure to bring the 10 essentials and a satellite communicator in case of emergency.

2. Valley of Fire State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 56 miles / 48 minutes

Valley of Fire is a famous Nevada State Park, and a nature preserve area known for its breathtaking red sandstone and rock formations. It consists of 40,000 acres of Aztec sandstone.

Prehistoric remnants and unparalleled vistas are intertwined among the valley’s red rocks. There are also ancient petroglyphs that were carved into the Aztec Sandstone rock formations. These spectacular rock formations are best viewed on a sunny day, and every sunset, they illuminate the valley, making it appear they’re on fire.

There are several outdoor activities that you can do in the Valley of Fire. The park offers a short hike for you to survey the area’s scenic views.

As you explore the site, take advantage of these fascinating rock formations like the Valley of Fire Beehives, Atlatl Rock, Elephant Rock and the Fire Wave. They will surely leave you speechless in their beauty.

You can stay overnight in the Valley of Fire; various campgrounds located near this famous spot for camping enthusiasts. And reservations in advance are required, check the  park’s website  for more details.

Valley of Fire is approximately 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas; it would take you about 1 hour to get there by car. Take the I-15 north for about 35 to 40 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Head east toward the Valley of Fire/Lake Mead from Exit 75. The West Entrance Station is located in the Valley of Fire, about 17 miles away.

The best time to visit the park is in October and April. The temperatures are mild and pleasant during this period, while they are extremely hot during the summer. The park is open from sunrise until sunset.

3. Kanarra Falls

Distance from Las Vegas: 159 miles / 2 hours, 33 minutes

At just 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, Kanarra Falls is the perfect day trip for adventure lovers. Grab your hiking boots and trekking poles and head off to this amazing slot canyon.

After arriving at the trailhead you’ll see a small restroom and ticket counter. They only allow 150 hikers a day, so it’s strongly recommended that you reserve your tickets online before arriving as no more tickets are sold on-site once the limit is reached. 

The hike itself is a moderate 3.8-mile hike directly through an epic slot canyon. Be prepared to get wet as the majority of the hike will have you walking through ankle-deep water (sometimes higher).

After about 1.6 miles you’ll see your first waterfall. If you choose to continue up the ladder, you’ll find the second waterfall about 0.3 miles later.

It will surely be a hike you won’t soon forget. Kanarra Falls is one of the best things to do near Las Vegas!

4. Lake Mead

Distance from Las Vegas: 31 miles / 36 minutes

Lake Mead is a wonderful afternoon or a day escape from the bustling city of Las Vegas! Located less than an hour outside of Las Vegas in Boulder, Nevada, visitors to Lake Mead are greeted with a surplus of outdoor activities sure to provide an outdoor recharge. 

For Lake Mead day trips Las Vegas, it’s recommended to drive so that visitors have flexibility to explore different parts of this natural preserve throughout the afternoon.  

Enjoy hiking, navigating slot canyons, swimming and boating at Lake Mead.  Keep in mind that there is no lifeguard on duty, and that swimming and boating beaches are separated. 

More of a relaxed afternoon can be spent driving to one of the many pull out parking spots to enjoy some views with a picnic lunch. Most of the pull out parking spots include a bathroom house.  

Visiting outside of summer months is most recommended as the Mojave Desert can heat up to 120 degrees fahrenheit during this time of year.  

A huge plus is that the natural preserve accepts the Annual National Parks Pass . Without the pass, entrance is $30 per vehicle.

5. Zion National Park (a favorite on this list of day trips from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 159 miles / 2 hours, 41 minutes

One of the best day trips from Las Vegas is visiting Zion National Park in Utah. Just over 2.5 hours from Vegas, Zion offers incredible views and adventures you’ll love.

The perfect Zion itinerary for one day is to take the shuttle into the Zion Scenic Drive to see the impressive canyon. If you’re up for adventure, hike The Narrows.

The Narrows is the popular hike where the canyon narrows and you can walk through the Virgin River (up to 10 miles round trip) to see the massive canyon up close as it closes in. Be sure to bring water shoes and hiking sticks for The Narrows.

Alternatively, you could get crazy awesome views on the Canyon Overlook Trail . It’s just one mile round trip, offering wide open views of the canyon with less effort.

Grab lunch or ice cream at the Zion Lodge or in Springdale, just outside the park. Or, pack a picnic and enjoy the views of the canyon! Regardless of if you’re solo, as a couple, with friends or visiting Zion with kids , it’s a fabulous adventure and perfect day trip from Las Vegas.

Just be sure to take the right hiking essentials when visiting in Zion, like good hiking shoes and plenty of water!

6. Hoover Dam

Distance from Las Vegas: 37 miles / 39 minutes

Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is a short drive, and one of the best ways to spend a day away from the city. You can rent a car and drive yourself or take a tour from Vegas . See the historic Hoover Dam, which was completed in 1936.

As a visitor to the Hoover Dam, you can park for free and walk to the viewpoint on both the Nevada and Arizona Sides. The Nevada side you can see the front of the dam. On the Arizona side, you’ll see the Colorado River and the back side of the dam.

The visitor center has information on the history and architecture of the dam. If you rent a car and drive yourself, the parking lot closest to the entrance is $10 to park, or you can walk the 0.7 miles from the free parking to get there.

One of the best ways to learn about the dam’s construction is through a Power Plant Tour. You’ll actually get to go down into the dam to see how it works!

At the time of publication, you can purchase a Guided Power Plant Tour online but not a Guided Dam Tour so if you want the most in-depth tour of the dam, you’ll need to get there early to get a tour, because it’s first come, first serve and sells out quickly.

7. Grand Canyon from Las Vegas via helicopter

Distance from Las Vegas: 45 minutes (flight time)

Enjoy the beauty of the Grand Canyon without all the driving! Grand Canyon tours from Las Vegas are a very efficient way to see the 4th most visited national park in the USA !

8. Emerald Cave kayaking (one of the most fun things to do outside of Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 55 miles / 58 minutes

Kayaking in the Emerald Cave is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the Vegas strip. The cave is located in the Lake Mead Recreation Area, along a calm section of the Colorado River.

Your journey to the caves will include a relaxing kayak ride along the Colorado River. The surrounding hills and cliff walls are awe-inspiring as they tower above you. 

Along the way, you can also go ashore and take a number of short hikes for a better view of the river and rock walls. These hikes will also give you a chance to see the unique flora and fauna of the area. 

The Emerald Cave itself will often get crowded, and only a few kayaks can enter at a time. The cave is shallow, giving you a chance to enter, take pictures, and then exit again within a few minutes time. 

Within the cave, you’ll see a green glowing light reflecting off of the water and onto the cave walls. This green glow is where the Emerald Cave gets its name. The best time of year to see the full emerald effect is to go in summer on a sunny day. 

To reach the caves, you can drive to Lake Mead Recreation Area and rent a kayak there, or book a half-day tour , which includes hotel pickup and drop-off services from Las Vegas. For your trip, it helps to bring the right gear , including a good backpack and water shoes . 

The tour will provide you with guidance and instruction along the way, so it’s a great option if you’re newer to kayaking or unfamiliar with the area.

9. Mojave National Preserve

Distance from Las Vegas: 68 miles / 1 hour, 9 minutes

If you’re looking for a way to get away from Las Vegas but want somewhere with few crowds, then consider making a visit to Mojave National Preserve. In just an hour’s drive on Interstate 15 from the big city, you’ll find hiking trails, caves, and much more to explore.

First, head to Cima Road, which is home to more Joshua Trees than you’ll even be able to find within the namesake national park. These are rare trees, only growing within certain parts of the southwest.

Another one of the best things to do is to visit the Kelso Dunes. These beautiful sand dunes offer viewpoints of the surrounding mountains and the opportunity to stand on top of the tallest dune.

The Lava Tubes Trail offers a short hike and a unique experience in a cave. There aren’t many places where you’re able to climb directly into the tube, so this one shouldn’t be missed!

Other fun activities include seeing the cinder cones along Aiken Mine Road, hiking the Teutonia Peak Trail, and visiting the Mojave Desert Mailbox. Because you’ll be in the desert, be sure to dress comfortably to stay cool while you’re out exploring.

It’s also nice to have a high-clearance vehicle for the visit, as some roads can be pretty rough. Also, be sure to check the status of the roads, because wintertime may bring snow and poor weather conditions.

10. UTV adventure at the McCullough Mountains

Distance from Las Vegas: 25 miles / 49 minutes

Get ready for an epic adventure in Prime Valley and Hidden Valley at the McCullough Mountain Range, Nevada . This is one of the most fun day trips from Las Vegas if you’e looking for an adrenaline-filled time!

This half day UTV excursion takes you through fun, rugged desert terrain just outside of Las Vegas. You’ll get to see Hidden Valley National Monument during your excursion.

An excursion like this was one of the most fun things to do in Aruba , and I think you’ll agree it’s an awesome day trip from Vegas , too. Drivers must be 16 or older, and each UTV is fit for 2 people. Kids as young as 12 can ride with an adult, so it’s great for families with older kids, too.

Pro tip: wear clothes you can get dirty and closed toes shoes.

Pack anything you don’t want to get dirty in a dry bag with a strap and tie it down. That prevents dirt from penetrating a backpack for other cloth bag. This is the dry bag I used while UTVing and it worked great! Don’t forget to take extra water in reusable water bottles , too.

11. Death Valley National Park (one of the best places to visit near Las Vegas for scenery)

Distance from Las Vegas: 110 miles / 1 hour, 55 minutes

Death Valley is one of the best national parks in California and a perfect day trips from Las Vegas if you are looking to escape the crowds and explore the stunning landscapes of the Mojave Desert. 

Although summers bring triple-digit temperatures to Death Valley, winter has a mild sunny weather with no snow, except for high altitudes. 

You can get to Death Valley by taking a guided tour from Las Vegas that includes major highlights of the national park or renting a car in Las Vegas . If you rent a car, you will have more freedom exploring this vast area and also enjoy stargazing at night since Death Valley boasts incredible dark skies free of light pollution.

The park has many hikes like Golden Canyon, overlooks and is also home to the lowest point in North America, Bad Water Basin, that sits at 282 feet below sea level. Since Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states, prepare to drive longer distances, as some points of the interest are as far as 50 minutes away from one another.

12. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 24 miles / 27 minutes

Some of the oldest buildings in Nevada lie right next to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This historic ranch is a fun little day trip from Las Vegas , where you can tour old buildings like a blacksmith shop and sandstone cabin.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, it’s a lesser-known attraction in the Las Vegas area , so you’ll really be able to escape the crowds. Pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoors. The best time to visit this state park is October through May.

The Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is a great spot for beginner hikers or families and pets, too. Hike the Spring Mountain Ranch Loop trial, at just 1.5 miles and flat, it’s an easy trail for nearly any skill level.

13. Seven Magic Mountains

Distance from Las Vegas: 26 miles / 27 minutes

A fun experience close to Las Vegas is the Seven Magic Mountains . These colorful stacked boulders are an art instillation that took social media by storm in 2016, thousands of visitors come to the Seven Magic Mountains annually.

It’s a free, short day trip from Las Vegas, and one worth visiting if you’re looking for something low-key to do in the area. And bonus – no extra hiking gear or picnic supplies required.😊 It’s perfect for when you’re visiting Las Vegas with kids !

Created by artist Ugo Rondinone and supported by the Nevada Museum of Art  and  Art Production Fund , this is a free attraction although donations are always welcome! Take as many photos as you desire, but please don’t damage the boulders.

With 3+ hours of driving each way, these are the best day trips from Las Vegas that make a long day, but totally worth the effort! Of course if you have more time, these destinations would make great weekend trips from Las Vegas, too.

14. South Rim of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas

Distance from Las Vegas: 279 miles / 4 hours, 22 minutes

If you’re looking to escape the intenseness of Las Vegas for a day and want to spend some time surrounded by incredible scenery you’ll never forget, head to  the Grand Canyon South Rim .

The Grand Canyon is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders of the world and offers absolutely stunning views. The South Rim in particular is considered to be the best part with its really expansive views and is truly a sight to see.

There are many unique hikes and viewpoints such as Mather Point that you can visit at The South Rim – but note that the weather and temperature can change suddenly here so make sure to bring plenty of layers and be prepared for any weather. 15. Horseshoe Bend from Las Vegas

Distance from Las Vegas: 274 miles / 4 hours, 23 minutes

Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed sites along the Colorado River and a fantastic excursion for those traveling from Las Vegas.

While on the far end for a day trip, Horseshoe Bend is about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas. Located in Page Arizona, the iconic feature is a must-do for those traveling through the southwest. 

Horseshoe Bend, part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is one  top things to do in Page Arizona .  It can be done as a stop along with other activities in the area.

The trail and parking for Horseshoe Bend is managed by the city of Page, and doesn’t take any National Park or other park passes for entrance to the site. Parking for Horseshoe Bend is $10 and the site is open from sunrise to sunset daily.

For those visiting the site, the hike requires about 1.5 miles (out and back) to reach the viewpoint for the bend. There’s a small platform located at the end of the trail.

However, be sure to continue on past the viewpoint along the slick stones and you’ll be treated to some great other views of the bend without as many tourists around. You can even climb the small hill to get a better overlook of the site. 

Beyond Horseshoe Bend, there’s plenty of other things around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Visit to the nearby Glen Canyon Bridge and Dam is worth a quick excursion. Visitors can view the amazing engineering feats of creating both the bridge and dam in this part of the river.

There’s also great hiking nearby such as the Hanging Gardens Hike, the Chains, and The “New Wave” which is a lovely banded sandstone area close to the glen canyon dam.

16. Bryce Canyon National Park (one of the most epic day trips from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 259 miles / 4 hours, 3 minutes

You’ll want to get up early for this one! As a day trip, this is doable but a pretty long day. It would make a great weekend trip from Las Vegas, too.

Anyway, Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the famous hoodoos, which are irregularly shaped rock spires. Witness the unique beauty of this landscape from Bryce Point or Inspiration Point.

If you’re up for hiking, try the Queens Garden Trail and Navajo Loop , which is a fun, interactive trail. It’s 3.1 miles and rated as moderate, you’ll weave through hoodoos and witness the bright orange and red rocks up close.

Have a picnic at Sunset Point or enjoy the views at Sunrise Point, too. You can see all the Bryce Canyon National Park highlights in just one day!

17. Joshua Tree National Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 186 miles / 3 hours, 8 minutes

One of the best day trips from Las Vegas is a day in Joshua Tree . It takes about 3 hours to drive from Las Vegas to Joshua Tree National Park, but it is worth the drive and a great way to escape the city.

Joshua Tree is best during the spring or fall when temperatures are more moderate. In the summer, the park gets very hot, and in the winter it’s cold. However, if you’re taking a day trip in the winter, you will still experience the warmest part of the day in winter.

While in Joshua Tree, take the quick hike to Arch Rock, drive down Queen Valley Road, visit the Cholla Cactus Garden, and, of course, see all the Joshua Trees. One of the best places to find a high concentration of Joshua Trees is along Queen Valley Road or on Park Boulevard from the West Entrance Station.

18. Antelope Canyon (a popular tour from Las Vegas)

Las Vegas is such a fun city to explore but many people don’t realize there are amazing places to visit outside of Las Vegas. Antelope Canyon is a popular slot canyon in Page, Arizona.

The canyon is full of beautiful Navajo Sandstone that makes for some of the most stunning views you’ll find. Getting to escape from the concrete jungle of Las Vegas is a great way to refresh and enjoy some time away from the city.

If you’re planning on visiting Antelope Canyon, there are a few things you must know.

The canyon is on Navajo land and is restricted to tours by Navajo tour guides and tours are required to visit. You’ll want to book in advance to ensure you can get a tour. If you find that Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are booked, look into tours of Antelope Canyon X .

May to October get really busy, the earlier you book your tour , the better.

To do Antelope Canyon as a day trip from Las Vegas, follow I-15 North through Saint George, Utah. Then take UT-9 to Hwy 59 towards Kanab, UT, where you’ll get on the US-89 East to Lake Powell and Page, Arizona. The drive is a little long, but it makes for a great adventure to one of the most beautiful slot canyons you can find!

19. Palm Springs

Distance from Las Vegas: 231 miles / 4 hours, 9 minutes

If you’re up for a slightly longer drive, taking a day trip from Las Vegas to Palm Springs is an ideal way to add some fun and adventure to your travels. Though it’s situated about 4 hours away, there are so many ways to spend one day in Palm Springs !

You can explore the iconic downtown area, which features boutique shops, hip galleries, and tasty restaurants. Or, check out the original retro architecture on residential homes and hotels.

Outdoor lovers can venture out for a day hike at one of the many trails, such as Tahquitz Canyon. One can’t-miss activity for any first time visitor is the famous Palm Springs aerial tramway, which takes you up the nearby San Jacinto Mountains for panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

20. Red Rock Canyon State Park

Did you know there are actually 2 Red Rock Canyons to escape to as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Not to be confused with the National Conservation Area just a few minutes outside of Vegas,  Red Rock Canyon State Park  is a 3.5 hour drive from Las Vegas. While it’s a long drive for a day trip, it’s doable starting before sunrise and driving back at sunset.

Located in Cantil, California, Red Rock Canyon State Park is part of the Mojave Desert. Once you’re there, you’ll be surrounded by stunning Joshua Trees and get a breathtaking view of sandstone cliffs as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy activities such as rock climbing, picnicking, easy nature walks, as well as beginner canyoneering. Best of all, you won’t find huge crowds here, so enjoy the peaceful escape from the city.

21. Grand Staircase Escalante (another favorite on this list of day trips from Las Vegas)

Grand Staircase Escalante is a fun and unique day trip from Las Vegas. If you’re looking to hike some really cool slot canyons, Grand Staircase is the place to do it.

A 3.5 hour drive from Vegas, there are a  few different slot canyons  located within Grand Staircase Escalante to visit. One of the most famous is Zebra Slot Canyon, a canyon that has stripes along the wall making it look like the stripes on a zebra!

Besides hiking the slot canyons in the area, there are plenty of other amazing trails to hike in this area. To get to Grand Staircase Escalante, head northeast on I-15 towards St. George, once in St. George depending on where you want to go in Grand Staircase either head towards Kanab or head towards Bryce Canyon.

The roads inside of Grand Staircase aren’t paved and a lot of the roads require you to have a 4×4 vehicle. Make sure to always check with the visitor centers nearby in Kanab and Escalante before heading out to make sure the weather and roads are safe for exploring.

22. Alabama Hills (one of the most scenic things to do near Las Vegas)

Alabama Hills, California is an underrated destination that’s gained in popularity over the last decade or so. A long day trip from Las Vegas, it can be done in a single day with an early morning and late night, or better yet, as a weekend getaway from Las Vegas!

With expansive views of these smooth rocky formations, there’s quite a bit to see and do in Alabama Hills. Movie Road is aptly named based on the volume of films that have been shot here. Drive down it and recognize scenes from Iron Man and Gladiator, just to name a few.

There’s plenty of hiking opportunities in Alabama Hills , too. Grab your hiking shoes and head to the famous Mobius Arch, coming in at less than one mile. Or explore views of the snow-capped mountains on the Upper Alabama Hills Trail to Cyclops Skull Arch .

Road tripping: from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park

Senior Director of Content Laura Motta loves the American West for its intense beauty, endless layers of human and natural history, and its full-on sense of weirdness. She took a road trip from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park. Here's what she encountered on the way.

• When to arrive: Arrive at Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport as early in the day as you can. This road trip requires a lot of driving in remote areas, and you'll want to reach your lodging in the town of Ely while it's daylight.
• Getting there: Great Basin National Park is about 300 miles from either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City , making it one of the most remote national parks in the US. To reach it, you will have to drive. And drive. Book a rental car that can handle inclines and dirt or rocky roads. If you attempt this road trip in the winter –  not recommended for those who don't have experience driving in tough weather conditions –   you will also need snow chains for your tires. I did this trip solo, but would recommend doing it with a partner so you can switch-off being in the driver's seat.
• Getting around: You'll spend much of this trip on Nevada Rte 93. Pay attention to roadside signs for gas. Stretches of this road run hundreds of miles without a single gas station, and you don't want to get stuck. It's also a good idea to pack water and snacks. Parts of Great Basin are 13,000ft above sea level and it's not uncommon to see light snow cover and overnight frosts from spring to fall. In winter, expect feet of snow and road closures.
• What to pack: A trip from Vegas to Great Basin means packing for two climates —  the burning Mojave and the arid high desert. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must for the trails in Great Basin National Park. Pack layers, as you can expect cool or even cold weather at night. For Vegas? Shorts for daytime, a cocktail getup for evening and a swimsuit should do it. One thing you'll need and use in both places: sunblock and sunglasses.

Day 1: Route 93 to Ely

Take a look around.

As you drive north out of Las Vegas along US Rte 93, the Great Basin Highway, the flat desert falls away and the mountains rise up on either side. They are green, then craggy brown, then blue-gray in the distance. This is America at its most expansive and mind-bogglingly beautiful, and the view out your car windows is as much your "destination" as anything else you'll see on this trip.

See if the truth is out there

Two hours north of Las Vegas, Rte 93 intersects with Rte 375 —  a desolate stretch of road known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. This is as close as you'll get to Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base that spawned persistent conspiracy theories and rumors of alien research. Knowing visitors are forbidden, I made a quick stop in the town of Hiko instead to visit some quirky and definitely unclassified sites that capture the area's kitsch factor. E.T. Fresh Jerky is a gift shop that specializes in "alien" (actually beef) jerky. It makes a good snack for the drive. Plus, there are some fun, photo-ready items in the parking lot (a giant "crashed" space ship, a mural of otherworldly creatures). Just up the road, another gift shop called the Alien Research Center is where you'll find shot glasses, t-shirts and stickers adorned with little green men.

Stretch your legs and grab lunch or a snack in the town of Caliente. I had a quesadilla at Knotty Pine , where you can enjoy the vintage vibes and play slot machines in the bar. You should also get gas in town, so take the opportunity to fuel up even if your tank isn't empty.

Worship at nature's cathedral 

Just past Caliente on Rte 93, you'll reach Cathedral Gorge State Park . This dramatic canyon, formed by eroded rock and clay, looks like a giant melting layer cake. It has some easy trails near the park entrance that can be completed in less than hour. Note that the park requires advance reservations for entry at peak times.

Hit the hay

By the time you reach the town of Ely, you will have earned a rest. I stayed at the Motel 6 (spotless, with especially welcoming staff) and the historic Hotel Nevada (Old West vibes, lots of taxidermy in the lobby).   

Day 2: Great Basin National Park

Get to know the park.

Drive about an hour west of Ely to reach Great Basin National Park, which is known for snow-capped peaks and an intricate cave system. There are also groves of rare, twisty limbed bristlecone pines, some of which are thought to be more than 5000 years old.

Go spelunking

Start your morning by descending into Lehman Caves , the park's central attraction and a must-see on any visit. The caves are classified as their own national monument and have their own parking lot and visitors center within the wider national park. Book a tour with a park ranger (30, 60 or 90 minutes, prices vary) to see enormous stalagmites and stalactites, underground lakes and the few living organisms that call the cave home.

Take a hike (or two)

After you see the caves, hop back in your car and drive the winding uphill road –   an experience unto itself –   toward Wheeler Peak. I parked in the lot well before the summit and set out from there on foot. There are trailheads here that lead to a few different, equally awe-inspiring sights,   including the bristlecone pine groves and Nevada's last glacier. I chose the Alpine Lakes Loop , a relatively flat trail that leads to the sparkling lakes Teresa and Stella. On the way, I crunched my way through light snow cover, snapped too many photos of soaring Wheeler Peak and enjoyed the crisp air. A good option is to try one trail earlier in the day, drive back to Lehman Caves for a quick lunch in the visitors center, and then pick another one to do in the afternoon. A word of caution, however: Some of these trails are labeled "easy," but the park's elevation adds a level of difficulty. Bring enough water, wear layers and pace yourself. 

Day 3: In and around Ely

Soak up some nevada nostalgia .

Copper mining and a prime location along Nevada's Pony Express route —  these are the things that built the town of Ely. The town is a good base for exploring Great Basin National Park, but it also allows easy access to a few other whimsical, slightly strange sights that make a fun add-on to a national park trip.

Make it malted

Pull up a vintage red-and-chrome seat at the soda fountain at Economy Drug , which opened for business in 1946. Excellent sandwiches and vintage-style sodas are menu standouts, but you can also order malts, milkshakes and ice cream. And of course, if you run out of toothpaste or sunblock, you can get it here, too. True to its name, Economy Drug remains a working pharmacy.

Ride the rails

It's hard to find a more charming spot in Ely than its impeccably preserved train station, which is part of the Nevada Northern Railway . Not only does this organization maintain the station and all of its adjacent buildings, it also preserves and runs a collection of vintage locomotives and train cars. Book a trip on one of them to go stargazing in the desert, view a fireworks display, learn about geology or sip champagne. Programming rotates and is oriented to the season. You can also tour the station itself. 

Search for treasure

Garnet Hill is a designated "rockhounding" area, or a place that's open to the public for geological treasure hunting. Drive up the steep dirt road as far as you can go, park, and then walk up the hill about 20 minutes to reach the best hunting spots. The hill is named for the dark red gems that are common in the area, but you're more likely to find other kinds of wonders close to the surface — namely, bits of petrified wood and fossils. I found a fragment of a trilobite —  a prehistoric marine animal that would have lived on this spot more than 250 million years ago —  and burst into tears at the wonder of it.

See what's left of a mining boom

Just off of Rte 50, about 30 minutes from Ely, you'll find one of the oddest, and most oddly enchanting, sites in the area. The Ward Charcoal Ovens , each one standing more than 30ft tall in a vast tract of open desert, were where charcoal was made for the smelting of silver in the 1800s. The nearby mining town would be wrecked by flood and fire by the close of the 19th century, but the stone ovens remain. You can even dart inside them to get a closer look at their open, beehive like design. 

Day 4: Las Vegas

Get back to sin city.

If you drove up to Ely via Rte 93, you can take an alternate road, Rte 318, back to Vegas. It affords different views of the mountains and saves about 30 minutes of driving. On my last night in Nevada, I opted for a few simple Las Vegas pleasures —  a terrifying museum and a perfect martini. I started at the Atomic Museum , which unflinchingly charts the history of atomic energy and weaponry. For more than 40 years starting in the 1950s, the area north of Las Vegas was America's official nuclear testing site. (In the 1950s, postcards showed an illustration of a Vegas showgirl wearing a mushroom cloud as a costume.)

Exhibits go deep on technology and history, but also examine the ethics of nuclear war, and even of the testing site itself. That evening, I headed to Delilah for a drink — and I definitely needed one. This supper club-slash-nightclub has live big-band-style music, simple food that hits the spot (the chicken fingers are a favorite) and impeccable cocktails, all in an atmosphere that feels like a throwback to gilded Rat Pack-era Las Vegas. This is the one spot on your trip where you'll be asked to put away your cell phone and just enjoy —  and it's so good that you won't mind.
