With its gleaming turquoise lagoons, bamboo-thatched overwater bungalows and sugar-white sands, the Maldives is one of the world’s most desirable beach destinations.

Every year, almost two million travelers touch down at Velana International Airport for the tropical trip of a lifetime. The last thing you want is to miss out on a vacation in paradise because you forgot to check visa requirements and, luckily, we're here to help.

Fortunately, the visa process is surprisingly easy. Whether you’re sticking to the local islands or zipping off to a private hideaway, here’s everything you need to know about visa requirements for the Maldives.

How to get a visa on arrival

Travelers from every country in the world can get a free 30-day tourist visa stamped into their passport when they arrive in the Maldives. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, tourism is the largest sector of the Maldives' economy, so the government has tried to make it as easy as possible for vacationers to access these pristine islands.

To get your visa on arrival, you just need a follow a few key guidelines. Your passport must be machine-readable and valid for at least one month past your departure date, and you must show evidence of your return flight and hotel booking confirmation – the airline and immigration may ask for this information.

Official regulations state that you should be able to show proof that you have the funds to support your stay in the Maldives, but this is rarely requested from travelers with resort bookings. Be prepared that immigration officials may ask for evidence of cash or a bank statement – around US$100 per day of your stay should be sufficient. Any travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever is endemic must show a vaccination certificate upon arrival.

Every traveler needs to  complete an Imuga form 96 hours before both their arrival and departure flights. The digital form is free and requests basic information like a photo of your passport, flight number, duration of stay, where you’re staying and where you’re heading after the Maldives. Upon completion you'll get a QR code that you can store on your smartphone – it will be scanned by immigration at the airport.

What if I want to extend my visa?

Having too much fun in paradise? We don’t blame you. If you want to extend your 30-day tourist visa for an extra 60 days, giving you a total of 90 days in the Maldives, just talk to your resort or guesthouse. They will work with immigration on your behalf to arrange your visa extension.

The resort will let you know the documents you’ll need to renew your visa, including a full page in your passport, a recent passport-size photo, and confirmation of your stay and onward flight. The fee for extending your visa is Rf750. It’s recommended to start this process at least 10 days before your visa expires, but remember requirements are always subject to change.

Can I get a working holiday visa?

The Maldives does not offer working holiday visas. But if working on a small tropical island or aboard a boat in the Maldives sounds appealing, working visas are available if you can secure a job at one of the 180+ resorts or hotels. An approved Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Economic Development is required before applying for a Work Visa. From there, workers must meet requirements like having a passport valid for one year, a passport-sized photo, a medical health report, and all other necessary documents. Your employer will be able to guide you through the process.

Maldives Tourist Visa: Entry and Visa Requirements to Maldives

Last Updated : 28 Apr 2024

Last Updated : 28 Apr 2024 at

Imagine warm weather, white beaches, and crystal clear water. That is precisely what the Maldives offers. The time I spent there was amazing. So if you love diving, resting on the beach, or eating delicious food, the Maldives is for you. Getting a Maldives Tourist Visa is probably the easiest Visa you'll ever get.

I'll cover everything you need to know, which actually isn't that much.

Let's get to it.

What Is A Maldives Tourist Visa?

What are the entry requirements for the maldives tourist visa, why do i need to fill out a traveler declaration, can i extend my maldives tourist visa, how much does a maldives tourist visa cost, what are the other visa types for the maldives.

The Maldives Tourist Visa is super easy to get, and the process is very straightforward. This Maldives Visa is available to all nationalities who wish to travel to the Maldives . You can get the Tourist Visa on arrival (also known as an On Arrival Visa). That's right! You don't have to go through the whole visa application process. You are not allowed to work (paid or unpaid) or do any type of business while in the Maldives on a Tourist Visa; if you want to work while in the Maldives, you need to get a work permit.

Travel tip: With international travel, you need to make sure that you have health insurance. Anything can happen in a blink of an eye. Rather, be safe than sorry.

Do I Need A Visa For The Maldives?

Nope, all you need to do to get your very own Tourist Visa is fly to the Maldives and get your Maldives Tourist Visa On arrival at the Male International Airport. However, you must satisfy the basic entry requirements to get immigration clearance upon arrival. Because you don't have to apply for a visa before you travel, there are no visa requirements, only entry requirements.

There are a few entry requirements you need to take into account. However, everyone can get a Maldives Tourist Visa On Arrival as long as they provide the necessary travel documents. To receive a Tourist Visa On Arrival, you need:

A valid passport or travel document.

Proof of hotel reservations.

Sufficient funds to last for the intended period of stay in the Maldives.

Confirmed onward/return tickets to your country of residence.

Traveler Declaration

Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, if you travel from a Yellow Fever country.

Remember that the issuance of a Maldives Tourist Visa ultimately lies with the Immigration officer. As a tourist, you do not have a right to claim a 30-day visa, and the information above is only a guidance to help you as much as possible. You will not necessarily get a Maldives visa on arrival for 30 days, as it is up to the Immigration officers at the airport to decide how long you can stay.

The period of stay granted is shown on the endorsement given on the passport. Check your passport for the arrival endorsement and take note of the number of days stay given. If you exceed your stay, officials can give you a fine or even deport you.

Valid Passport Or Travel Document Requirements

Your passport or travel documents must be in a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) with at least one month of validity.

You need to fill in and submit your Traveler Declaration within 72 hours of the flight time. You must submit the form electronically through IMUGA .

The Maldives Immigration introduced the Traveler Health Declaration to expedite the process of pre-arrival and pre-departure health information under the health requirements of the Maldives. All travelers traveling to and from the Maldives must submit a self-declarative health declaration within 24 hours before traveling.

All travelers , including tourists, work visas, other visa holders, and Maldivians, must submit the Traveler Health Declaration. The main objective is to mitigate health risks and ease immigration procedures.

Yes, you can! You can extend your Maldives visa on arrival by applying to the Maldives Immigration in Male before your current Tourist Visa expires. To apply, you have to submit a Visa Extension Application Form at the Immigration Head Office during official working hours. Immigration will check whether you have the necessary financial means to cover the extended period of stay.

The maximum time you can stay in the Maldives is 90 days. So, if your current visa is 30 days, you can receive a max 60-day extension.

A Maldives Tourist Visa On Arrival is free, but there is a visa fee when you extend your Tourist Visa. The fee for a Tourist Visa extension is Rufiyaa 750 if the total amount of days you are spending (including those on the original tourist visa) is more than 30. If you are in the Maldives for less than 30 days, you do not need to pay a fee even with the extension.

There are different Maldives visas for various purposes. For example, if a Tourist Visa isn't the type of visa you want to apply for, you can choose a different type, like:

Maldives Business Visa: This visa is issued online to foreign nationals traveling to the Maldives for their work but without the intention of becoming employed in a Maldivian company.

Maldives Work Visa: For this visa, your employer or representative in the Maldives has to get your work permit (Employment Authorization) from the Maldives Immigration.

Maldives Marriage Visa: You need a Maldives marriage visa if you marry a Maldivian national. Your sponsor (fiance) has to sponsor your visa before you travel by applying at the Maldives Immigration. You cannot get married or register your marriage in the Maldives without a regular tourist visa.

You're good to go!

Now that you know everything about the Maldives Tourist Visa (and a bit more), you can go live your paradise life! Enjoy the delicious food. Seriously I can't stress this enough; it's super yum.

Location and Geography

The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls, spread over 90,000 square kilometers. These atoll structures are formed upon a sharp ridge rising from the ocean, thereby creating their secluded uniqueness.

Each atoll in the Maldives is made of a coral reef encircling a lagoon, with deep channels dividing the reef ring. A string of islands take their places among this atoll ring; each island has its own reef encircling the island lagoon. The reefs of the islands, alive with countless underwater creatures and vibrant corals, protect the islands from wind and the ocean waves. This unique structure of reefs and channels makes navigation almost impossible for anybody without sufficient local knowledge of the waters.

Ninety-nine percent of the Maldives is sea. The people of the islands are widely dispersed across the atolls, with about 200 inhabited islands. Around 140 islands are developed as tourist resorts and the rest are uninhabited or used for agriculture and other livelihood purposes.

The islands of the Maldives lay on the trading route of the Indian Ocean. Thus settlers, and visitors from neighbouring regions and around the world have come in contact with the islands for as long as history has been recorded. Such is the to-and-fro flow of people and their cultures, that a marked effect has been left in the Maldivian people, the language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes.

The looks of the Maldivian people may differ from one atoll to the other, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians. The language, Dhivehi, differs in dialect in some regions in the south of Maldives, possibly due to the secluded nature and subsistent ways of island life. Maldivian beliefs have been very much based around religion and superstition, often used together in matters of significance but given separate positions in society. In matters of faith, Islam dominates, but influence of the supernatural still continues to play a major role in most island communities, possibly giving credit to the folklores and Buddhist traditions of the islands’ first settlers before conversion to Islam in 1153 AD.

The mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian arts. The music played with the local bodu-beru (big-drum) resemble that of African drumming. The dhoni (a unique Maldivian sailboat) is an art form itself built with skilled craftsmanship, with significant similarities to the Arabian dows. The fine artistry of Maldivians, seen in the intricate details on wooden beams in antique mosques, represents what we have gained from Southeast Asian architecture. Then there is the undefined: the distinct geometric designs used in mats woven from local materials, the embroidered neckline of women’s traditional dresses and their ornaments too, expose another story brought in from an unknown culture that has seeped in to Maldivian society.

Maldivians are quite open to adaptation and are generally welcoming to outside inspiration. The culture has always continued to evolve with the times. Locals still eat fish and fishermen still spend days out at sea, but tourism now takes prominence. Most Maldivians still want to believe in upholding unity and oneness in faith, but recent waves of reform in the country have created a whole new culture of new ideas and attitudes. The effects of the modern world are now embraced, while still striving to uphold the people’s identity, traditions and beliefs.

The Environment

The Maldivian President who dived underwater with his cabinet has given a new light to the association between Maldives and the ‘environment’. The world now knows how dependent the Maldives is on its natural environment.

The environment has a direct affect on all facets of Maldivian. The islands are protected by thousands of reefs that need to be alive for this unique archipelago to continue to exist in the future. The corals on our reefs need its countless inhabitants to feed on them for the corals to re-grow. Locals need the fish in the water for livelihood and they depend on the beauty of its reefs and islands to sustain our tourism industry. Most importantly, the Maldives needs its citizens and visitors to take care of its wonderful natural environment in order to survive as one of the most magical places on earth.

Several government regulations have been set up to enable a system to provide natural protection for the otherwise fragile 1,190 islands of Maldives. Starting in 1995, important marine areas have been designated as protected regions. Endangered marine species like the whale shark, turtles, dolphins, as well as corals, have also been protected by law. Hanifaru, a bay like lagoon in Baa atoll, is among the most recently protected marine areas. This area is home to rays from around the Maldives that gather here to feast on the masses of plankton brought into the lagoon by water currents.

Weather and Climate

The weather in the Maldives is usually picture perfect: sunlit days, breezy nights, balmy mornings, and iridescent sunsets. The temperature hardly ever changes - which makes packing for your holiday an easy task. With the average temperature at about 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The sun is a constant most days, shining through treetops, creating lacy patterns on your feet, healing cold-bones with its warmth. Throughout the day, the sun will make itself known, ensuring that it will be remembered and missed, like an old friend, as you pack up your suitcases to leave.

Maldives has two distinct seasons; dry season (northeast monsoon) and wet season (southwest monsoon), with the former extending from January to March and the latter from mid-May to November.

The rare thunderstorm in the Maldives, especially around the southwest monsoon months) can be a welcome respite from the sun. Cloudy skies and slate grey seas, and crashing thunder makes up for lovely reading weather. The warm temperatures will allow you to go for a walk in the rain, a verdant, wet, thoroughly enjoyable experience. For extra exhilaration, take a swim in the rain - the sea will be extra warm.

The “I’m Vaccinated!” initiative was established by the Ministry of Tourism. The intention is to make the Maldives’ tourism industry the first completely immunized one in history. By June 2021, 69% of resort staff members had finished the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine that were recommended, while more than 96% had only gotten the first dose of the vaccination.

The vast expanses of sand and surf make the Maldives an idyllic retreat in the charming Indian Ocean. That is the Maldives for you, the land of bespoke luxury, gorgeous villas, scenic vistas and everything blue. The Maldives has a reputation as the dreamy holiday destination drawing leisure travellers, families, and newlyweds worldwide. Before you get there, you might want to figure out all the right visa documentation and due to Covid-19, get the extra paperwork out of the way. Entering the Maldives is relatively easy and hassle-free. So here is everything you need to know about the Maldives tourism visa.

Tourist Visa

A tourist visa is granted for all nationalities on arrival to the Maldives. A person travelling to the Maldives from a foreign nation as a tourist does not require a pre-approval from the immigration department. However, you must meet the basic entry requirements to get clearance upon arrival. The maximum number of days granted for a visa on arrival is 30 days unless agreed by any bilateral means or treaty. This stay period is not for the visitor to claim but lies at the Maldives Immigration discretion to grant any number of days less than or equal to 30.

How do I get a Visa for the Maldives?

The visitors to the Maldives do not require a pre-approval for a tourist visa; A 30-day tourist visa is granted to Indian passport holders with the condition of furnishing certain sets of documents and conditions.

What Visa do I need to visit the Maldives?

As per the visa requirements of the Maldives, you need to apply for a tourist visa for leisurely travel. However, you require applying for a business visa for any official purpose like conference, meeting, seminar, or exhibition.

What is the fee for the Maldives visa?

The Maldives tourist visa is free of cost for Indian nationals for most intents and purposes. A 30-day tourist visa is handed over to Indian passport holders who meet all requirements at zero cost. However, a nominal fee of ? 3500 can extend up the Visa to 90 days, if you plan on extending your stay in the island nation.

What requirements must be met and which documents should I carry to get the Visa in the Maldives?

Here are the following conditions for a seamless issuance of Maldives tourist Visa-

  • If you had a valid Indian passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of travel/ entry-exit into the Maldives, it would help.
  • A return air-ticket has to be shown at the immigration counter, followed by the Indian counterpart upon commencement of the journey, which acts as proof of return.
  • A hotel or resort booking confirmation as the proof of stay for travel dates to be produced at the immigration.
  • A recently taken passport-sized photo with a white background is required. These photos need to match the photo in the passport.
  • You should have adequate funds to cover all expenses for the duration of the trip. The minimum is considered to be 150 USD per day for a two-person trip.
  • Visitors have to submit the traveller Health Declaration (THD) form electronically via https://imuga.immigration.gov.mv/ , to be submitted by all travellers travelling to and from the Maldives, within 24 hours before their travel.
  • If applicable and COVID-19 negative PCR test result, Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate attached while completing Traveler Health Declaration form. The swab sample as per the report has to be taken 96 hours before departure to the Maldives.

What measures should I take in the Maldives?

  • It is a punishable offence to extend your period of stay in the Maldives beyond the number of days granted for the Visa by Immigration department.
  • The visitor shall install and utilize the 'Trace Ekee' Application that aims towards mitigating community spread of COVID-19 in the country through community-driven contact tracing.
  • Visitors are suggested to check their passport for the arrival endorsement and note the number of days granted to stay in the Maldives. The period of stay granted is written on the endorsement in the passport.
  • Once arrived as a tourist, the visitor cannot engage in business, occupation, profession or paid employment while in the Maldives.
  • It would be best to abide by social distancing guidelines in common areas of the resorts and public places.

What are the conditions in which a Tourist visa can be denied in the Maldives?

The immigration division of Maldives has the right to deny entry in some instances and the issuance of a tourist visa is not a fundamental right of the traveller.

  • If the immigration department finds reasonable evidence that documents are falsified, and the furnished documents are not produced and conditions not met.
  • If an individual is found to be disrupting religious or political harmony or suspect a person to intend to disrupt harmony or indulge in illegal activities in the country.

Can visitors extend their Maldives tourist visa? If yes, how?

The authorities consider extension after immigration reassesses the financial position of the applicant for the revised duration of stay. If an extension is considered, the authorities provide it for a maximum of 90 days, including the initial stay days. Visitors can fill up the visa extension application form at the Immigration head office during the work hours in Male, the capital city if they wish to extend the tourist visa. A fee of 750 Maldives Rufiyaa is applicable for tourist visas issued for more than 30 days of stay.
