While Napa Valley may be known the world over for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon , it’s also an up-and-coming region for its classically made sparkling wines . In fact, Napa Valley is home to several sparkling wine houses that are owned by French Champagne companies, as well as some family-owned wineries who recognized Napa’s potential for producing great bubbly. Here are some of our favorite sparkling wine estates in Napa Valley—including the one that started it all.

Domaine Carneros 2019 Brut Rosé , $46 Produced in méthode traditionnelle from estate fruit and aged for a minimum of three years on the lees, Domaine Carneros’ 2019 Brut Rosé is an international award winner. While many think that Rosé wines are made from only Pinot Noir, this Brut Rosé includes 42% Napa estate-grown Chardonnay, for structure.

Book the Estate Tasting to sample a selection of this Calistoga winery’s sparkling and still wines and enjoy the casual, welcoming ambiance. Or take things up a notch by reserving the Elevated Experience , which takes place in the brand-new Miller House, located on the estate.

Sparkling Wine Tour

Napa valley.

A Napa Valley sparkling wine tour… not all wines produced in this valley sit quietly in their glass.  For those who would prefer to spend their day exploring the world class effervescent offerings found in Napa Valley, we’ve planned a day just for you.

Sure Napa Valley is synonymous with Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest of the Bordeaux varietals. But Sparkling Wine lovers shouldn’t feel shorted, there are amazing sparkling wine producers here in Napa Valley and for some of them, it’s their primary focus… enough of them to make a day out of it.

Champagne is a sparkling wine but is called Champagne because it is produced in the Champagne region of France.

Of course the first step in this great Napa Valley sparkling wine tour is for us to pick you up. If we’re not your personal driver, then the hardest part of the day will be picking the designated driver.

Napa Valley Sparkling Wine Tour - One Day Itinerary

Sparkling wine tour Napa Valley Carneros Simply Driven

10:00 am - Domaine Carneros Reservations

Founded by the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger, Claude Taittinger’s search for a worthy U.S. counterpart began in the late 1970s. In 1987 he selected a 138-acre parcel in the heart of Carneros, Napa Valley, creating the quintessential California expression of the Taittinger style in Carneros.

At Domaine Carneros, you can relax and enjoy table service in the elegant salon or on the terrace overlooking exquisite views of the endless vineyard-covered hills of romantic Napa Valley. Wines may be tasted in flights or by the glass. Caviar and artisan cheese plates matched to their wines are also available.

Feeling super romantic? You could book a sparkling suite for just $500 a couple. A private balcony overlooking Carneros with wine, caviar, really everything you need… including a bottle of your favorite wine to take home.

11:30 am - Domaine Chandon Reservations

In 1973, Domaine Chandon became the first French-owned sparkling wine venture in the United States. The famous Champagne producer Moët & Chandon and acclaimed cognac maker Hennessy combined forces with the mission of producing world-class sparkling wine in Napa Valley.

Domaine Chandon combines spectacular grounds against extraordinary Napa Valley vistas while you enjoy your wine in the tasting room or on the terrace.

You will also be able to select from a variety of entertaining tours and tastings of sparkling and varietal wines, tailored to suit both the casual visitor and the serious wine aficionado.

Sparkling wine tour Napa Valley Chandon Simply Driven

2:30 pm - Schramsberg Reservations

The Schramsberg estate is tucked into the densely forested slopes of Diamond Mountain, a few miles south of the town of Calistoga, and is home to the oldest hillside vineyards in Napa.

Jacob Schram founded the winery in 1862 and it was named a state historic landmark in 1957. The Davies family purchased the abandoned winery in 1965 and have since turned it into a world class winery.

Tastings at Schramsberg are in conjunction with an educational tour through their historic caves, which were dug by Chinese laborers in the late 1800’s. During the tour, your guide will share the rich history of Schramsberg, introduce you to the classic method of producing sparkling wine, and end with a variety Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards wines.

4:00 pm - Mumm Napa Visitor Info

Established in the late 1970s by GH Mumm, a leading champagne brand in France, Mumm Napa follows the traditional wine making techniques of its French heritage to create the finest, hand-crafted sparkling wines.

Although Mumm Napa has a wonderful tour, at this point in your day it’s time to relax and possibly take in some art. They have three casual tasting spaces with panoramic vineyard views: their beautiful Outdoor Patio, the enclosed Tasting Salon and the Oak Terrace (pictured).

For art lovers, Mumm Napa has twenty-seven gelatin silver prints created by Ansel Adams. This collection includes many of Ansel’s most famous photographs including Monolith, the Face of Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, Winter Sunrise from Lone Pine and more.

Sparkling wine tour Napa Valley Mumm Simply Driven

There you have it, a whole day focused on Napa Valley sparkling wine and it’s a day you’ll remember for a lifetime. We would love to drive you on this sparkling adventure or any custom wine tour you may want to have.

Sparkling Wine Tour Northern Sonoma County

  • by WINECOUNTRY COLLECTIVE
  • on JUNE 13, 2024

France may have the literal trademark on Champagne, but the bubbly long-produced in Sonoma County is no less delicious. The northern part of the County is home to several well-known and under-the-radar producers making delightful sparkling wines in a variety of styles and grapes, from Brut Rosé to sparkling Syrah. Here’s where to sample some of the best sparkling wines in Northern Sonoma County.

sparkling wine tours

Wineries / Healdsburg

J vineyards & winery.

J Vineyards & Winery is a great place to start a tasting tour of Sonoma County’s sparkling wines, as the winery is a top producer of bubbly in the region. In fact, the Healdsburg area winery has an elegant hospitality space coined The Bubble Room, where Traditional Method sparkling wines are paired alongside five courses of thoughtfully composed dishes that highlight local and seasonal ingredients. J Vineyards & Winery offers sparkling wines in a range of styles and price points, as well as acclaimed still wines, so there’s truly something for everyone.

Iron horse vineyards.

Sparkling wine is the specialty at this scenic family-owned winery, located within the Russian River’s Green Valley. The outdoor tasting area may be on the rustic side, but don’t let that fool you–the bubbles poured at this unpretentious winery are spectacular, and the views of the surrounding vineyards are quite impressive, too. Come for the sparkling wine, but don’t overlook Iron Horse’s still wines, including its single vineyard Pinot Noirs representing different blocks on the estate.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery

Located in the picturesque Alexander Valley region of Sonoma County, Jordan Winery is a must-visit destination for people who love wine, food, and beautiful scenery. The stunning 1,200-acre, sustainably-farmed estate is not only home to grape vines, but also nearly 100 different varieties of fruits and vegetables, as well as bees, chickens, cows, and goats. While the historic winery makes a wide range of acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon wines, Jordan’s Cuvée by Champagne AR Lenoble is a real treat. Developed in partnership with the Malassagne family in France, this non-vintage Brut is the perfect accompaniment to Jordan’s own artisanal caviar.

Wineries / Geyserville

Banshee wines.

With vineyards stretching across Sonoma Valley, Pinot Noir is Banshee's focal wine, but that doesn’t stop them from dabbling in a little bubbly, too. Head to their new Alexander Valley tasting room, hidden among the vineyards, to indulge in their Bubbles & Caviar Experience. You’ll get to sip on a perfectly frosty bottle of Banshee’s Ten of Cups, a Brut California with notes of marzipan, honeysuckle, green apple, and tropical fruit. Paired with Sterling caviar, creme fraiche, olive oil, and sea salt crostini, this is a match made in sparkling heaven.

Thomas George Estates

This Healdsburg winery produces small batches of single vineyard and single block estate wines, which can be tasted from the inviting tasting room, relaxed picnic area, or wine caves. As with the other varieties, the sparkling wines offered for tastings change with the seasons, but you can always count on them to be bright and bubbly. Enhancing a visit are the Italian culinary delights, like pizza and arancini, prepared by the winery’s Estate Chef, as well as Bocce ball on-site, making for a leisurely afternoon in Wine Country.

Amista Vineyards

This welcoming winery in the Dry Creek Valley is known for its small lot wines, made from estate vines as well as neighboring vineyards in the region. Owners Mike and Vicky Farrow seek to make wines that can be enjoyed with friends for everyday celebrations, and their sparkling portfolio perfectly captures this ethos. Crafted using méthode champenoise, or the Traditional Method, Amista’s sparkling wines include unique offerings such as their Sparkling Grenache, Sparkling Blanc de Blanc, and Sparkling Syrah, which they describe as “joy in a bottle.”

Breathless is a joint venture between three sisters, who founded the boutique winery to honor their late mother, who taught them to believe that each breath taken is a gift. Along with winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster, the women focus on Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines, including Blanc de Blancs and Late Disgorged Bruts, which can be tasted from their welcoming tasting room and garden in downtown Healdsburg. Tastings can include caviar and charcuterie add-ons, but Breathless also offers a unique Sabrage experience, if you’ve ever wanted to learn the time-honored tradition of sabering a bottle of bubbly.

Best basic sparkling–wine tour: Mumm Napa

An articulate guide covers every aspect of the process in memorable terms; videos give you close-ups of things you otherwise can’t see, like harvesting and the madly foaming surface of a fermenting tank of wine; and cool props show up too, like a wine bottle tacked sideways to the wall that lets you peer at the yeast settled there, flavoring the wine.

Tours are $25 plus tax for adults over 21 (yes, nondrinkers too) and $10 plus tax for those under 21.

sparkling wine tours

Most fabulous winery feature: Schramsberg's wine caves

Festooned with lichen and dug deep into the mountain, they evoke the ancient caves of Champagne, France―but are more gothic and mysterious. Stacks of bottles gleam in the dimness as you pass, green lanterns glow overhead, and you may even get to taste by the light of giant candelabra in a moss-perfumed cavern.

This is a place where time seems to have stopped.

sparkling wine tours

Most knowledgeable guide: David Munksgard of Iron Horse

Munksgard, the winemaker, sometimes leads tours himself. He’ll quote Napoleon and reveal the secret to making very tiny, long-lasting bubbles. His good-natured charm and contagious love of sparkling wine come through in everything he says.

And the tour is free.

Virginia Is for Wine Lovers — Here's Where to Go and What to Drink

After years of being in the shadows, Virginia winemakers are finally getting the attention they deserve.

Jared Soares

If someone shouted " Virginia " in the middle of a word-association game, “fine wine” might not be your first response. Even some of the state’s winemakers confessed to me that they had, in the past, found many Virginian wines forgettable — or, in some cases, undrinkable. Oh, how times have changed.

Being an underestimated wine region for so many years has turned out to be one of Virginia’s superpowers. If all eyes have been focused on Napa Valley or the Bordeaux region of France, Virginia’s wines land somewhere in the middle, geographically and stylistically. Young winemakers, especially, have been expanding their knowledge and skills and creating an identity found only there.

The industry’s growth is astounding: in the mid 1990s, there were about 50 wineries in Virginia; there are now around 300, with more than 4,000 acres under cultivation. Wine contributes more than $1.7 billion to the state’s economy, not only from sales but also from visitor experiences at wineries, hotels, and restaurants. I wanted to find out if the Virginia wine story was about more than just quantity. We all know the slogan “Virginia Is for Lovers.” But is it for wine lovers?

Every wine trip needs a home base, and for the first leg of my journey, mine was Salamander Middleburg , less than 50 miles west of Washington, D.C. Middleburg is not just wine country; it’s also the heart of Virginia’s equestrian culture, and Salamander— stately and elegant, with a patina of old money — is a hymn to all things equine. The walls are lined with on-theme artwork, and guests can ride horses from the fully equipped stables. As riders strutted through the lobby in exquisite gear, I couldn’t help wondering: Have I been transported to a Ralph Lauren fashion show?

But you don’t need to be a member of the horsey set to enjoy a stay at Salamander. There’s a gym, a spa, bikes available to borrow — and an entire wine region on your doorstep to explore.

In the mid 1990s, there were about 50 wineries in Virginia; there are now around 300, with more than 4,000 acres under cultivation.

I began my journey just about a mile down the road at Boxwood Estate Winery . John Kent Cooke, former owner and president of Washington, D.C.’s NFL team, has always had a love for Bordeaux, so at his estate, 26 acres are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and other Bordelais varieties. In partnership with French wine consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, the Boxwood team has created a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, as well as its locally known Topiary blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot — all varieties that express the terroir of Virginia.

French wine making was a recurring theme during my tastings. “White Burgundy is my go-to,” said Jim Law, founder of Linden Vineyards . A 35-minute drive west of Middleburg, this winery is renowned for its single-vineyard bottlings of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Bordeaux-style blends.

Law’s name kept popping up in conversation with winemakers, and I soon realized it’s because he is considered one of Virginia’s most influential winemakers. He’s known for experimentation — testing new varieties and planting vines in different soils or on varying slopes. When I arrived in mid-September, Law and his team were in the thick of it: grapes were being harvested, and time is precious when the fruit is ready to be picked.

Linden is not a sleek and glamorous winery, and that’s how Law likes it. Originally from Ohio, he’s focused on the grit of farming and, in his words, “understanding the personality and nuance” of each of the hills he grows on. He also admits to being “emotionally attached” to his fruit. That passion was detectable in the glass of Linden Hardscrabble Chardonnay I tasted later in my trip: I could sense the Burgundian influence in the balanced flavors, but this was no imitation. It was an expression of the steep rocky slopes and granite soils of Hardscrabble, one of Linden’s three vineyards.

Beyond his own vines, Law praised the diversity and experimental nature of Virginia wine making as a whole. There is room for everyone to do their own thing, he told me.

Rutger de Vink, a Law protégé, is another winemaker who is steadfast in his own practice. After years of searching, de Vink, a former Marine, found the ideal spot to grow grapes: on a former cattle farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He laughed heartily when he shared that a farmer had teased him for “buying a pile of goddamn rocks.”

Apparently, de Vink found the equivalent of wine-making gold in those rocks, because, in June, his RdV Vineyards announced that it had been acquired by Eutopia Estates, the venerable French company owned by the Bouygues family. Its holdings include Château Montrose and Château Tronquoy in Bordeaux. The vineyard’s new name, Lost Mountain, pays homage to its location on a historic mound where George Washington surveyed what we now know as the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Lost Mountain was also the name of RdV’s flagship wine.)

The name may have changed, but the rocky land remains the heart and soul of the wine, giving it the character and gravitas necessary to bring de Vink’s vision of creating an “American Grand Cru” to fruition. Today, the Lost Mountain vintage has a devoted following: there’s a two-year wait for its $225-a-bottle blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

After adding myself to the list, I decided to book a tour and tasting at the winery, where sommelier Karl Kuhn and founding winemaker Joshua Grainer can often be found sharing their knowledge with guests. “We don’t need people to come through the door, but we want to share the experience,” said Grainer, who is also a Master of Wine, as designated by the Institute of Masters of Wine in the U.K. (Only 416 people in the world have this title, which is considered to be one of the highest distinctions in the industry.)

When I arrived at my next stop, Early Mountain Vineyards , in Madison, just outside Shenandoah National Park, I saw a diverse group of diners, including a feisty quartet of senior citizens, a mom on the deck with a baby in a stroller and a dog at her feet, and a group of co-workers enjoying lunch. Attracting visitors beyond the wine making is part of the point: there’s a full-service restaurant and a robust events space. With more than 55 acres, founder Jean Case, a former AOL executive and philanthropist, did not play it safe when she decided to open Early Mountain.

Looking at the wine list, I was stunned by the number of grapes Early Mountain works with: I counted 11. The state has some geological advantages that make it a hospitable landscape for a seemingly endless parade of grapes: its wide variety of soils, such as limestone, sandstone, and granite, each impart different flavor profiles.

“Mountainside vineyards are key to the quality of Virginia wines because they are well-draining and provide good airflow,” Early Mountain winemaker Maya Hood White told me. Her Quaker Run Cabernet Franc 2020 is a perfect example. It has a grace and classic style reminiscent of Chinon — Cabernet Franc from France’s Loire Valley — but with a touch of New World lushness and vivacity.

The state has some geological advantages that make it a hospitable landscape for a seemingly endless parade of grapes.

The last person I expected to meet during my trip was a winemaker who hailed from Piedmont, in the mountains of northern Italy — home of the iconic Barolo. Although his family has a history in the industry, Luca Paschina wanted to pursue the craft his way, and at Barboursville Vineyards , in Virginia’s own Piedmont region, 30 minutes northeast of Charlottesville, he found the perfect place to do it. The winery is owned by the Zonin family, known for estates throughout Italy. Paschina brings a blend of Old World and New World flavors to the Virginia scene, in tandem with the Zonins’ mutual enthusiasm for cutting-edge wine making.

Paschina’s roots are also revealed in the Barboursville portfolio. He makes an elegant Vermentino, a Nebbiolo, and Paxxito, a sweet wine in the “Passito” style, from air-dried Moscato Ottonel and Vidal grapes. For the complete Barboursville experience, visitors can book a room at its quaint 1804 Inn and pair the wines with the handmade pastas at its Palladio Restaurant .

Barboursville is the winery where I most strongly felt the richness and complexity of Virginia’s history. The ruins of a building designed by founding father Thomas Jefferson remain on the property, and a portrait of him hangs in the barrel room. As a descendant of enslaved people, my feelings on Jefferson, a well-documented enslaver of human beings from Africa, are complicated — to put it mildly. I’m sure he could never have imagined that someone like me would one day be involved in sharing the beauty of wine. But I share his love of the fermented grape and can’t ignore the significant role he played in the state’s wine-making history.

Jefferson established two vineyards on his Monticello estate and cofounded Virginia’s first commercial wine company. Adjacent to the portrait, a placard reads: “We could, in the United States, make as great a variety of wines as are made in Europe, not exactly of the same kind but doubtless as good.”

I left Barboursville with my stomach full of house-made pasta and red wine, and my brain abuzz from everything I had learned. When my car pulled up to Keswick Hall , a luxurious resort just 25 minutes from Barboursville, I felt instant relief.

Constructed in 1912, Keswick Hall has had many lives: a private residence, a country club (with an 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye), and a hotel designed by the husband of the floral-print queen, Laura Ashley. Acquired in 2017 by Molly and Robert Hardie, co-chairs of the family investment company H7 Holdings, this grand manor reopened in 2021 following a multimillion-dollar renovation. A new wing that was added to the existing Italianate structure increased the room count to 80. On Keswick’s plush Duxiana mattress and Frette linens, I slept as if I didn’t have a care in the world. (The relaxing Rose Diamond Radiance Facial at Keswick’s spa added to my zen state of mind, too.)

Keswick’s restaurant is Marigold by Jean-Georges , created by none other than Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The spacious dining room combines rustic woodwork and glass with stunning views, and the menu puts a creative spin on familiar dishes: pizza with black truffles and roasted cauliflower seasoned with turmeric tahini and pistachio. But the wine list is what stands out. While it’s far-reaching, there are several key offerings from Virginia, including — finally — Linden Vineyard’s Hardscrabble Chardonnay. I had been impatient to taste it since meeting Law, and it was well worth the wait. The wine was balanced and minerally, crisp and juicy, with a lingering finish.

The last day of my short and intense dive into the Virginia wine scene started with a visit to Michael Shaps Wineworks , in Charlottesville. A native New Yorker, Shaps backs his endearing swagger with stellar wine-making credentials. While many of Virginia’s winemakers are passionate about Burgundy, Shaps ups the ante: he studied wine making in that region and owns a winery, Maison Shaps, in Meursault, France. In addition to crafting Virginia wines from the familiar Chardonnay, Viognier, and Merlot, Shaps is constantly innovating. Raisin d’Être, his cheekily named sweet wine, is made from grapes dried in repurposed tobacco barns. And he is passionate about Petit Manseng, a white grape from southwestern France that he describes as “bulletproof” in the vineyard. His Petit Manseng has flavors of grilled pineapple and mango.

I ventured west of Charlottesville to Veritas , in the town of Afton. There’s no other way to put it: on a balmy Friday afternoon, the joint was jumping. During my two-hour visit, I saw bachelorettes, couples, families, co-workers, and many more stream into the large tasting room and outdoor space, and I observed from the side as wedding preparations were set in place.

It’s clear from the expansive space and quality wines that the Hodson family has poured its heart, soul, and resources into the business. This also proves true in its selection of wines, such as the Scintilla sparkling Chardonnay, made in the traditional champagne method. Veritas’s rich and earthy Petit Verdot is also impressive. I booked a specially curated wine-and-food experience that paired the Reserve Chardonnay with smoked salmon, caper relish, and preserved lemon.

From my conversations with wine makers, it’s clear that creativity is at the core of what’s happening in Virginia. The vintners may find inspiration in other places, but their devotion to understanding their terroir, planting the right grapes, and perfecting the production process has propelled them out of the shadows of other, more established regions. While its leaders are probably too polite to say “I told you so” to the naysayers who doubted Virginia’s potential, they’ve certainly earned the right to do so. To Jefferson’s point, look at us now.

A version of this story first appeared in the October 2024 issue of  Travel + Leisure  under the headline "American Vintage."

Toasting wine glasses to Black Excellence

Wine lovers, it’s time to expand your horizons and support a vibrant sector of the wine industry that is gaining recognition and appreciation: Black-owned wineries. These establishments not only produce exceptional wines crafted with passion and expertise but also tell unique stories and embody rich histories. Each winery reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of its owners, enhancing the wine experience with narratives that resonate deeply.

My journey into the world of Black-owned wineries began with a simple Google search: “show me Black-owned wineries in California.” The top results were the McBride Sisters Collection and Theopolis Vineyards . I reached out via email and received an immediate response from Theodora Lee, whose signature read, “Theo-patra, Queen of the Vineyards.” My full, squinted-eye smile in response confirmed I was in the right hands. My conversation with Theodora opened the door to other remarkable personalities and brands within my community, including André Hueston Mack, La Fête Wine Company, Carlton McCoy Jr., Longevity Wines, and Fern Stroud of Black Vines , to name a few.

In previous articles, I’ve expressed my confidence in a common priority among gatekeepers and business leaders: the color green, the color of money! Thus, diversifying the wine industry goes beyond social justice; it also presents a compelling business case. Consumers are increasingly drawn to brands that reflect their values, such as diversity and inclusion. Supporting Black-owned wineries is a tangible way to advance these ideals while enhancing one's own experience.

Consider these striking statistics:

  • Black Americans comprise 13.4% of the U.S. population yet own less than 1% of U.S. wineries.
  • A 2020 survey by the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV) indicated that only 0.1% of the $70 billion U.S. wine industry is Black-owned.

These figures highlight a significant gap in representation and the immense potential for growth within this sector. By actively seeking out and supporting Black-owned wineries, consumers can play a vital role in bridging this divide.

While many celebrity and athlete-owned wine brands deserve recognition for their quality, I want to shine a light on lesser-known or smaller brands that may not yet have your attention. Here’s my carefully curated list of must-try Black-owned wineries that deserve a spot on your wine rack, each offering a unique taste and story that will elevate your next wine tasting experience.

After retiring, Dexter and Marilyn Meadows sought a new adventure, driven by Dexter’s passion for the land, which led them to the stunning Umpqua Valley in Southern Oregon. Journeying from Southern California via Tuskegee, Alabama, they were eager to discover where this new chapter would take them. Meadows Estates is more than just a place for wine; it's a must-visit community destination rich in history and local traditions. With planned events, workshops, a tasting room, onsite lodging, a wedding venue, and vineyard tours, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Which Wine(s) Are You Best Known For?

We are best known for our Viognier, award winning Grenache (Double Gold, Best in Class), and Syrah Reserve (Gold Medal winner).

When Is The Best Time To Visit?

Spring and Summer is the best time to visit us, March - July. The tasting room is buzzing with patrons, both new and old. Our Airbnb is almost fully booked and there’s a lot of exciting things happening in the vineyard!

Winter Is Coming. What Food And Wine Pairing Do You Recommend This Fall?

Fall is the best time for comfort food like a hearty beef stew with carrots, and potatoes which would be spectacular with our 2017 Syrah Reserve. Also, Lasagna paired with our 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon would be another amazing option for a Fall wine pairing.

J.Moss Wines (Napa Valley, California)

James harvesting grapes

J. Moss Wines is a family-owned boutique winery founded by James and Janet Moss, who began their winemaking journey in 1999 with a barrel of Merlot. After sharing their first wine at their wedding in 2000, they pursued their dream of crafting artisanal wines, leading to the creation of the J. Moss label. With over 25 years of experience, they produce elegant, award-winning wines, focusing on single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals from Napa Valley. Their winery, located in the Crusher Wine District, offers a personalized tasting experience, making it a memorable hidden gem in Napa Valley.

Our Downtown Napa Tasting Room is open by appointment on the weekends and can be booked online at www.jmosswines.com

Winter is coming. What Food And Wine Pairing Do You Recommend This Fall?

Fall and Cabernet Sauvignon go hand in hand, Cabs love to be matched up with a juicy, hearty, fatter red meat. One of our favorite pairings is: Grilled Ribeye or Filet Mignon with a red wine reduction sauce accompanied with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. The acidity and tannin of the Cab cuts through the fat, while the fat and protein of the meat lessen the astringency of the wine, making it taste silky smooth and bring out the fruity flavors.

Founded in 2017 as a Black-owned, woman-owned winery in Alameda, CA, Dr. Chris Wachira was inspired to create wines that complement Kenyan cuisine and reflect her cultural heritage. As the first Kenyan-born Californian winemaker, she aimed to address the lack of representation in the wine industry for minorities. This passion project evolved into The Wachira Group , which focuses on closing market gaps for underrepresented communities, including the establishment of SOKO Distributors, California’s first Tier 1 supplier for minority-owned alcohol brands. Each wine in the Safari Collection tells its own unique story, making them a celebration of diversity and inclusion.

Summer and fall are perfect with the Bay Area’s beautiful weather, but honestly, anytime you want to sip great wine, you’ll find a reason to visit us.

We’re best known for the wines featured in our Wine Safari experience, each one embodying the spirit of the Big Five animals of the Kenyan safari. These wines aren’t just unique in flavor—they each carry a story, a connection to my heritage, and a nod to the incredible diversity of Kenyan wildlife.

  • Our Chardonnay , represented by the Buffalo, is known for its strength and balance. Just like the Buffalo’s role in its herd, this wine is a social centerpiece—perfectly balanced and versatile, making it a favorite at any gathering.

It was awarded a 2022 Silver Medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition and a 2022 Gold Medal with 92 points at the LA Invitational Wine & Spirits.

  • The Cabernet Sauvignon , symbolized by the Rhinoceros, surprises people with its light, smooth finish—much like the Rhino, which despite its size, moves with surprising grace. This Cabernet is known for its elegance, with notes of black raspberry, vanilla, and cocoa.

It earned a 2022 Double Gold Medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition and 90 points from VinePair.

  • Our Zinfandel , representing the Elephant, stands out for its boldness. It’s as commanding as the largest of the Big Five, with bold tannins and a long, lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression.

It was awarded a 2022 Silver Medals atLA Invitational Wine Challenge & NY World Wine & Spirit Competition

  • The Muscat , represented by the Leopard, is one of the most versatile wines we offer. Just as the Leopard effortlessly navigates different terrains, our Muscat pairs beautifully with a wide range of cuisines and is perfect for any season.

It was awarded 90 points and two Gold Medals at the New Orleans Wine & Food Expo and the LA International Wine Competition.

  • Finally, our Sparkling White , symbolized by the Lion, truly captures the essence of celebration. Much like the Lion’s commanding presence, this wine shines at any gathering, with its lively bubbles and fruity aromas.

It earned 99 points and a Double Gold Medal at the CA State Fair and a Bronze Medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition.

Each wine in our safari has its own distinct character and story, making it impossible to choose just one!

As the weather cools, my mother’s lamb stew becomes my go-to comfort food. It pairs effortlessly with our Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine I crafted specifically to enhance the flavors of hearty dishes like this. The rich, savory depth of the stew is perfectly balanced by the wine's smooth tannins and vibrant fruit, creating a symphony of flavors that lingers long after the meal.

In fact, during one of our wine club pick-up parties, we shared this very pairing with our members—lamb stew alongside our Cabernet Sauvignon. We even gave out spice packages so they could recreate the experience at home.

The Shepard Collection (Paso Robles, California)

Brandon Shepard

Brynne and Brandon Shepard created The Shepard Collection in 2022 as a wine and lifestyle brand to bring wine to culture and culture to wine. Their goal is to disrupt the world of wine by creating a space that inspires and builds a diverse community driven by creative expression, empowerment, and a shared love of wine. Welcome to their revolution.

Private tasting are available in the Estrella District on the westside of Paso Robles. Also we’re close to opening a new tasting room in Downtown Tempe, Arizona.

We are best known for our TSC Cabernet Franc and TSC Rosé of Grenache.

With Autumn upon us, we recommend pairing our TSC Cabernet Franc with our Shepard Family Jambalaya recipe. The vibrant, crisp flavors of the Cabernet Franc perfectly complement the rich, savory notes of jambalaya.

Henderson Harvest Wines (Oakland, California)

Don Henderson

Owner Don Henderson, hails from Pensacola, Florida, with family roots in New Orleans. After relocating to Palo Alto at a young age, he discovered his passion for photography at 12, which sparked a successful 35-year career in filmmaking. His impressive portfolio includes work on acclaimed films such as "Blue Jasmine" and "Steve Jobs." In 2020, after 15 years of winemaking, he launched his own wine brand, Henderson's Harvest . Don shares a love for cooking with his wife, Dr. Catherine Metayer, where they artfully blend Southern and French culinary traditions. Looking ahead, he plans to retire from the film industry in 2025 to pursue winemaking full-time, fulfilling a long-held dream.

When is the best time to visit?

Hendersons' Harvest has an online store. We also do pop-up wine pours throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, which we post on our website and social media. Twice a year we do tastings at Donkey and Goat Winery in Berkeley, California, where I am currently making my wine.

Hendersons' Harvest is best known for its Rosé and Napa Cabernet wines. I made my Sangiovese rose patterned after a French Loire valley style rose. And I am very happy with the result. I am greatly influenced by the practices of “French” and Napa Valley wine makers. This year we will introduce our 2023 Mendocino Primitivo.

Fall is here and the Summer Rosé that has been enjoyed on hot days, and warm evenings has one last fling! Khēmia’s 2023 Sangiovese Rosé pairs fantastically with Dungeness Crab which is coming into season. Khēmia Rosé is the perfect accompaniment with all seafood and shellfish dishes. The bright fruit-forward, balanced acidity, and depth of mouth feel of the Sangiovese Rosé showcases the flavor range of broiled fish, grilled scallops, shrimps, or lobster, as well as boiled Dungeness Crab.

P. Harrell Wines (Oakland, California)

Paula enjoying a glass in the vineyard

Paula J. Harrell, a San Francisco native and founder of P. Harrell Wines, has established a winery that champions diversity and inclusivity within the wine industry. Inspired by her family's entrepreneurial spirit and her passion for wine, Paula's journey began while studying abroad in Spain and evolved through her experiences in real estate and her deep immersion in wine culture. Founded in 2015, her winery emphasizes community building and crafting unforgettable wine experiences. P. Harrell Wines has received numerous accolades and has been featured in various media outlets. As a proud member of several organizations dedicated to promoting diversity, Paula's wines pay tribute to her family's legacy and cultural heritage.

We currently do not have a brick and mortar, rather we are carried in several tasting rooms and restaurants listed under the “Partners” section on our website. But sign up for our newsletter for updates on a future location.

Haight Street Dry Riesling

Haight Street Off-Dry Riesling + Curried Butternut Squash Soup.

Due to its highly acidic nature, Riesling naturally pairs with many spicy foods, particularly Asian and Indian dishes. This off-dry option pairs exceptionally with curried stews, such as curries butternut squash soup, which is perfect for Fall! The creaminess of the coconut milk base is a perfect contrast to Riesling’s crisp and citrusy profile, while the curry and spices help temper the wine’s acidity. And though tempered, it still cuts through the richness of the dish, with the mineral undertones adding complexity.
