Are you going on a  trip to  China  and planning to  visit the Hainan region?

Excellent idea!

This large island in southern China is  the perfect region to spend a few relaxing days  by the sea at the end of a  China itinerary .

In order to help you prepare for your trip, I have prepared  a guide of the 15 best things to do and see in Hainan , with all the must-see places of interest. And as a bonus, I’ll give you my selection of the best accommodations  for a great stay!

So what to do in Hainan?

Visit Hainan: the 15 must-sees

Located in the south-east of the island, by the sea,  Sanya  (三亚) is undoubtedly the most touristic city in Hainan. Crossed by the Sanya River, the city is modern, with a few buildings of improbable architecture.

Here are the things to do and see in the city of Sanya:

• The Bay of Sanya , its huge sandy beach and its seaside promenade. To be redone at night!
• See the lover’s bridge  : a bridge in the shape of a dragon’s back that crosses the Sanya River. It is nicely lit at night.
• Take a night cruise,  which will allow you to observe the lights of the city from another angle.
• See Phoenix Island , 3 buildings on which a light show takes place every evening.
• Go to Luhuitou Park , a hill that overlooks the city and offers a nice view of Phoenix Island and the surrounding area (entrance: 45 yuan)

Sanya  is also the perfect place for  shopping!  Most of the  small local clothing stores  can be found on Hongqi Street (  google map link  ). There are also  a few shopping malls in town , including a large underground for much of the length of  Jiefang Road.

2. Nanshan Temple

Located about 40 km from Sanya,  Nanshan Temple  (南山寺) was one of my favorites in Hainan.

Just a quick note before we start: unlike other temples you can visit in China,  the site is recent  and is 100% tourist-oriented, so don’t expect to visit a place steeped in history.

If the place is worth it, it is above all for  the giant 108 m high Guan Yin statue  built on the sea. It is already impressive in the photo, but in real life, it is really something!

What is cool  is that it is possible to visit the interior: its base houses a temple and you can climb to the first floor. This will give you the chance to really appreciate his size, since you’ll be up to his toes.

In addition to this statue, you will have the opportunity to visit in Nanshan:

• Nanshan Temple
• Take a walk on the beach  to observe the statue of Guan Yin from another angle (it is the haunt of wedding photographers!)
• Tianzhu Shrine:  the pavilion of Buddha and its  Stūpa
• The Golden  and Jade Statue of Guanyin, located in a separate temple, ticket to buy in addition (little interest)
• The “Longevity Valley” , a short walk in the forest to reach a pavilion.
• The park  and its few ponds, statues, pavilions etc.

How to get to Nanshan Temple?

From Sanya you can get to Nanshan:

• By Taxi of course  (about 150 yuan)
• By bus:  Buses 16, 25 or 55 go to Nanshan Temple

Practical information

• Visiting time:  it takes about 4 hours to visit the entire site, it’s quite large. Especially if like me, you do everything on foot, without taking the little tourist train.
• Entrance fee:  150 yuan
• Opening hours:  8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

3. Tianya Haijiao

Tianya Haijiao  (天涯海角) is the other must-see site (for the Chinese at least!) to visit near Sanya. It is famous for  the large rocks  with rounded shapes that  sit enthroned on the beach  and which  recall the Seychelles in some ways , with the Chinese symbols painted in addition.

The visit can be grouped with that of the  Nanshan temple  on a day. If you go to visit the temple of Nanshan in the early morning, you will have time to stop at  Tianya Haijiao  on the way back, it is on the way to the bus.

• Entrance fee:  75 yuan

Travel Tips Visit Tianya Haijiao  that if the weather is really good and you have nothing else to do, the  place must have been beautiful before it was invaded by mass tourism . Unfortunately, today the setting is no longer very natural and  there are really a lot of people.

4. Dadong Sea

Dadong Sea  (Dadong Hai, 大东海) is  the closest seaside resort to Sanya.

On the menu,  a huge sandy beach  with lots of restaurants, the possibility of  doing nautical activities , and lots of tourists. In addition to the Chinese, a lot of Russians spend their holidays in Dadong sea.

5. Yalong Bay

Yalong Bay  (亚龙湾) is the most exclusive place in Hainan Province.  It is here that the most expensive luxury hotels  are located , some of which are among the  best hotels in the world . Endless  swimming pools , huge and superbly maintained  parks ,  direct access to the beach  and of course deckchairs and parasols included.

A real little  paradise for lovers of sunbathing  and  quiet holidays  in an upscale setting.

The best hotel to stay in Yalong Bay for me is the  Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay resort.   For what? Well quite simply because it is a little out of the way compared to the others, in  a more natural and super calm setting . This is the best hotel in the area. (See even Hainan province).

6. Wuzhizhu Island

Wuzhizhu  Island  (蜈支洲岛) is  ultra popular with Chinese tourists , with thousands landing on the island every day to  enjoy the dozens of activities  on offer. You will understand, you really should not expect a desert island, it is rather  the Disneyland of water activities!

You can do  more than fifteen activities  there , ranging from  parasailing  to  diving ,  snorkeling ,  towed buoy  or  a short jetski session . As you can imagine, the day can quickly become quite expensive.

On the other hand, if you want to try everything, you can  get a day pass  that will allow you to  do all the activities  for just under 1500 yuan (about 200 euros). I find that to be quite reasonable, considering the price of each of these activities.

The departure of the ferry  to go to the island of Wuzhizhu is at the entrance of Houhai (  Google Map link  ).

If you want  to go to Wuzhizhu Island  during your trip to Hainan, I recommend you to  stay at Houhai Village . The best hotel in the village (the most recent and modern) is  the “Happy Together” guesthouse . Plus, it’s really quiet.  To book it, click here .

7. Haitang Bay

Like Yalong Bay,  Haitang Bay  is a huge sandy beach bordered by luxury hotels. Since it’s a bit further from Sanya, it’s a bit cheaper, and there are a bit fewer people.

You will find  5-star hotels  with rooms  around 100 euros per night  or even less. At this price, it’s  perfect to end your  trip to China  on a slightly more relaxed note!

8. Nanwan Monkey Island

Nanwan Monkey Island  (南湾猴岛) is a park where, as its name suggests, you will be able to  see monkeys in semi-freedom.

I tell you right away, it’s not really worth it for the park itself. It’s really small and the monkeys are not treated very well.

During your visit,  you can attend 2 shows:

• An acrobatic show  with the monkeys riding their bikes and doing some tricks
• A little comedy scene

By attending the 2 shows,  the visit will take you about 1 hour.

But what is most worth it in history is taking  the small cable car that crosses the sea . From up there, you will have a very nice view of  a floating fishing village.

Whether you go or return, you will have the choice between  taking the cable car or the ferry , it’s up to you.

On the way there are sometimes more than 2 hours in line at the cable car , and generally far fewer people at the ferry. It may therefore be worth  taking the boat one way and the cable car on the way back.

9. Xincun and the Floating Village

Xincun is the small town located just in front of Nanwan Monkey island. This is where the ticket office is located as well as the departure of the cable car.

Even if you are not going to Nanwan, I advise you to go for  a walk to the Xincun market which is located on the port. It’s not touristic at all, you will really discover the way of life of the locals. As well as certainly some bizarre species of fish and shellfish :D.

It will also be an opportunity to  taste some delicious fruits . I especially advise you to taste  Mangosteen  (Shan Zhu 山竹), my favorite fruit. It  really tastes like candy.

In addition to the market, Xincun is also home to  the floating fishing village  that you see from the cable car to Nanwan Monkey Island.

10.Mont Wuzhi

For a change from the sea, you can take a walk around  Mount Wuzhi  (Wuzhi Shan – 五指山)  , the highest point on Hainan Island  (1840m). Its name means “the five-fingered mountain”.

What to do near Mount Wuzhi?

• Hiking  of course!
• Du rafting  dans le Grand Canyon de Wuzhi Shan
• You get an idea of ​​the peaceful life of the inhabitants of the center of the island , very different from what you have seen on the coast.

To  get to Mount Wuzhi , the easiest way is to  take the bus from Sanya to the town of Wuzhi Shan . Count 2h-2h30 of journey.

11. Dongshan Mountain

Dongshan Mountain  ( “Dongshan Mountain” in English – 东山) is located  near the city of Wanning . Nicknamed “Hainan’s Number 1 Mountain”, it is one of the island’s few historic sites.

Throughout the visit,  you will be able to see:

• Large rocks with Chinese inscriptions  related to the history and legend of the place
• Ancient small temples  dating back to the Tang Dynasty, including the Chaoyin Temple.
• A source famous  for its legend and some statues
• Enjoy the view  once you reach the summit lookout!

The visit is done on foot , it is not very big. You can also  opt for the chairlift to climb to the top (184m, it’s actually more of a hill than a mountain), but that greatly shortens the visit.

• Entrance fee:  60 yuan
• Visiting time:  about 1h30

12. Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark

The  “Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark”  (雷琼海口火山群世界地质公园in Chinese), which we will simply call the  haikou volcanic park  in this guide, is the major tourist site in northern Hainan.

Located 15 km from downtown Haikou, this park is best known for  its main caldera called Ma’anling . It is more than  220 m high and 90 m deep.  You have to  climb quite a few steps  to get there, you have been warned!

There are also more than 40 ancient volcanic craters in the park dating from the  Quaternary period .

Haikou  (海口) is the capital of the Hainan region. Located at the northern end of the island, the city is  much less touristy than Sanya . This will give you the opportunity to experience local life.

Here are the  things to do and see in Haikou:

• Take a walk in Qilou Old Street , the most beautiful view of the city with its mix of European and Asian colonial architecture. It’s the perfect place to do some shopping or eat in one of the many restaurants.
• Visit Hai Rui’s tomb , a small garden with pavilions and sculptures
• Aller à Wugong  Temple
• Stroll along the beach of Xixiu Beach , the city beach
• Enjoy the large beach of Holiday Beach , Haikou’s most famous beach. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can do water sports here.

Some other  places to see around Haikou:

• Take a boat trip to  Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve
• Go to  Dongjiao Coconut Plantation , near Wenchang City
• Visit the  Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden , the first zoo dedicated to tropical animals in China.

14. Drink Fresh Coconut Juice

I can’t tell you about the things to do in Hainan without mentioning  the coconuts  : they are everywhere!

If you like it, you will have plenty of time to  drink fresh coconut juice  from coconuts all over the island.

15. Discover the Gastronomy of Hainan

If you are traveling to Hainan province, you might as well take the opportunity to taste some local dishes! As Hainan is an island, you can imagine, it is paradise for fish and seafood lovers.

In addition to this, here are the 4 most typical local dishes:

Wenchang Chicken

“Wenchang Chicken” originated in  Wenchang , a city in northeast Hainan.

This dish, made with  free-range chicken,  is special because of its cooking method. Traditionally,  the whole chicken is cooked in almost boiling water , which allows the meat to be really very tender. It is then cut into pieces and you can dip it in  a sauce made with local spices.

It is  the most famous dish of the region . It has also  spread throughout Southeast Asia  with the migration of peasants from Hainan at the beginning of the 20th century. You will therefore find it under different names, sometimes simply  “  Hainan Chicken Rice” in  Malaysia ,  Singapore  or  Thailand .

“Hele Crab”  is , as its name suggests, made with crab from the  village of Hele , in the  Wanning region . The particularity of the place is to be located at the mouth of the river,  the crabs are therefore raised in a mixture of fresh and salt water.

The crab is then  steamed  and seasoned with  ginger, garlic and vinegar.

“Jiaji Duck” is made with a special breed of duck raised in  Jiaji Village , which is now part of  Qionghai City . It is located by the  Wanquan River.

As it is a different breed, and also  because of its diet  (mainly based on rice, and other cereals, or even coconut!),  the taste is quite different from the duck that we are used to. to eat.

Traditionally, it is  served with a sauce of vinegar, ginger and sesame oil.

Dongshan Lamb (Eastern goat)

“Dongshan Mutton”  is another  dish originating from the city of Wanning , which could definitely earn the title of food capital of Hainan.

When eating it, the first thing you’ll notice  is that it doesn’t have that characteristic mutton taste , and that’s normal,  it’s actually goat meat!  It’s super tender and really delicious.

Dongshan  Lamb  exists in several versions: stewed  ,  roasted  or  even  braised with coconut milk.

How to get to Hainan?

Do you want to go to Hainan?  You have 3 choices:

The easiest way to go to Hainan  is of course to go there by plane . There are 2 airports on the island, in Sanya and Haikou.

If you are close to the Qiongzhou Strait, you can take the ferry that connects  Hai’an Port  to  Haikou.

There are also  other ferry lines , from the city of  Beihai  for example.

Not many people know, but  it is also possible to get to Hainan directly by train.

And yes, and the most surprising thing is that  your train will take the ferry to arrive on the island.

How to get around in Hainan?

To get around Hainan, nothing could be simpler: there  are 2 high-speed train lines  that allow you to go around the island very quickly.

• The Eastern Line , which runs from Sanya to Haikou via the East Coast
• the West line , which makes the same route through the West.

The majority of  Hainan’s tourist attractions  are in  the southeast area of ​​the island , around Sanya.

For  short trips , you can  take the bus or taxi.

When to go to Hainan?

In  Hainan Province , the temperature is mild throughout the year. Even  in winter , it is not uncommon to have days when the thermometer reads  over 20 degrees.

• The best time to visit Hainan  is from  November to the end of April . It is also  high tourist season , with a peak in the months of January and February.
• In summer, it is the season of rains and typhoons:  it is very hot and extremely humid. It’s the low tourist season, there are fewer people,  the hotels are much cheaper.

Ideally, try to  visit Hainan in November , it really is the best month to enjoy the island. There are not too many people yet and the weather is nice.

Accommodation in Hainan

Now that you know what to do and visit in Sanya, here is  where to stay in Sanya to be close to the activities. 

• Wyndham Sanya Bay: Located just 200 metres from the seaside, Wyndham Sanya Bay offers various facilities including an outdoor swimming pool, a gym and a constant temperature swimming pool. Free WiFi and free parking space are accessible. Sanya Railway Station lays approximately 30 minutes’ drive away. It takes about 12 minutes by car to Phoenix International Airport. Luhuitou Park can be reached in around 45 minutes’ car journey.
• 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya : Located in Haitang Bay, 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya has a restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and bar. 300 metres from Haitang Bay Beach and 39 km from Luhuitou Park, the property provides a shared lounge and a garden. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk, room service and currency exchange for guests. Atlantis water park and Wuzhizhou Island are nearby.
• Sanya Backpacker International Youth Hostel : If you prefer the international experience and want to meet people, this is a very good hostel. The staff was really welcoming, super-pleasant and I met a lot of great people there. If you are looking for a hostel near the beach, with local and foreign restaurants nearby, as well as transport, this is the right hostel.

How to get to hainan, when to go to hainan, hainan’s city and population, tourism on hainan, the volcano complex geopark, mount wuzhi, the mountain of the seven spirits, bo’ao and the bfa, the monkey island of nanwan, the food of hainan, the laoba cha.

I’ll start off this article with a song from Namewee: 不到海南岛不知道身体不好 bu dao Hainan dao bu zhidao shenti bu hao “if you don’t go to Hainan Island, you don’t know how bad off you are”. Hainan Island 海南 (literally “to the south of the sea”) is the largest tropical island in China, not to mention one of its most visited tourist destinations, especially in summer.

The name Hainan is also abbreviated as 琼 qiong (you’ll find these characters on the license plates of cars on Hainan) which, for its part, is an abbreviation of 琼瑶 qiong yao “ pure jade ”.

Hainan is considered a Chinese province, in the southernmost part of China; it was the final province conquered by the army of the Communist Party not too long ago in 1950.

In the past, Hainan was an area isolated from the rest of the Chinese empire, mainly used for sending into exile characters like Su Dongpo and Hai Rui.

As a tourist island, there are two airports on Hainan: at Haikou and Sanya . From Europe there are various direct routes, but most times you’ll need to have a stopover, which will also affect the costs. From China, Hainan is easily reachable via: planes, trains and ferries . It depends where you decide to leave from!

Generally, every period has its pros and cons. Between April and October, hotels will definitely cost less (can’t say what the discount will be); in this time period, it’s rainier than in other months.

The period between November and March is better for biking (it shouldn’t rain too much and it’s the coolest time of the year).

From November to January, you can have a beautiful surf experience. Sadly, Hainan can be struck by typhoons… but these usually only happen in the period between June and the first half of November.

The province’s capital is Haikou 海口, followed in importance by Sanya 三亚 (what aspiring Sinologist studying in China has never been to Sanya to walk its famous waterfront or to stay in one of the most luxurious resorts in the whole country?), Wenchang 文昌, Qionghai 琼海, Wanning 万宁, and so on.

On Hainan there are two ethnic groups: the Miao 苗 and the Li 黎 (the latter have left behind a heritage of technical loom working that is highly prized in Asia).

This is one of the reasons why the languages of Hainan include a dozen dialects, some of which are also widely used in Guangdong; that notwithstanding, everyone can speak Chinese, and now, even English.

Besides the cities, other places that should absolutely be visited are Shimei Bay and the bay of the Sun and Moon: in these bays you can also surf the best waves in all of China and among the best in all of Asia; moreover, you can also take part in a half or full day excursion on bicycle.

In recent years, Hainan is a prime destination not only for tourists but for actual full streams of money: there’s a growing proliferation of resorts and luxury buildings in general.

If in the 80’s Hainan’s economy mainly consisted of agriculture and fishing, it was also chosen as a ZES (special economic zone), thanks to the farsightedness of certain exponents of the Chinese government and a series of sensible choices. Hainan soon became an international tourist destination, especially for honeymooners.

As with the destinations of the 90’s there was a tourism boom, with the arrival of another ten million tourists annually (which continues to grow!); large and famous chains also arrived on the island, such as the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Starwood, Mandarin Oriental, which allow for stays all year long in splendid 5 star hotels .

Recently “ethnic minority villages” have also been created, where you can have an experiential tourist experience, reproducing traditional Chinese activity.

Hainan is most famous for having become a new destination for international golf in just a few years, with lots of well-appointed golf courses; moreover, due to the whirlwind omnipresence of globalization, tourist offerings have diversified and now it’s possible to participate in modern activities such as diving, surfing or yoga.

For a greater international window, media events have been organized on Hainan: the selection of Miss World (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2015), Mister World (2007) and Elite Model Look (2008), all events have been held at the aforementioned seaside locality of Sanya.

Moreover, to facilitate tourism even more, since 2018 the Chinese government has allowed access to Hainan without a visa for the first 30 days (for at least 59 nationalities!).

Since 1998 the capital of Hainan, Haikou 海口 is the most populous city on the island with about two million inhabitants. Haikou, which literally means “mouth/source of the sea”, has always been a place where maritime businesses hold a noticeable importance, even if lately there’s been a building boom.

Even if this city is lacking in tourist sites, there are quite a few who decide to spend a few days relaxing in complete tranquility; a strong point of this city (and anyone who has been to China can appreciate the importance of this point) is the excellent air quality, second only to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet; for this reason, many Chinese (and not) are inclined to stay in Haikou just to ride their bikes and breathe some clean air.

In any case, in Haikou you can visit the Hainan Museum , where you can find many exhibition halls dedicated to ethnic minorities and/or the resistance of the inhabitants against the Japanese.

In Haikou you’ll also find Wugong Ci 五公祠 “ Temple in Memory of the Five Functionaries ”: a temple going back to the Ming Dynasty where its surrounding gardens are dedicated to five functionaries exiled to the island a long time ago (two of the five are the poet Su Dongpo and the functionary Hai Rui).

A place I recommend that you visit, especially if you’re a nature and history lover, is the Haikou volcano complex geopark (in Chinese it would be 海口火山群世界地质公园 haikou huoshan qun shijie dizhi gongyuan ): a park that covers more than 110 square kilometers of countryside where you’ll find dozens of now inactive volcanoes, tunnels carved out of the lava and even a village abandoned for centuries, built out of lava rock ( the huoshan cun 火山村 “the volcanic village).

In the park there are more than 40 volcanoes of the Quaternary, the most recent period of the earth’s geological history, characterized by important climatic modifications and alternate phases of the expansion and retraction of glaciers that our planet has experienced.

The geopark, as was already said, is made up of an ecological community of thousand year old volcanoes and a landscape formed over ten thousand years of volcanic eruptions, now covered by plants and fruit trees. On the road you’ll still find volcanic stones from ten thousand years ago. Going up towards the volcano’s crater 222 meters above sea level, you can see the whole city of Haikou.

Mount Wuzhi ( wuzhi shan 五指山 lett. “the mountain of five fingers”), with a height of 1867 meters, is found in the middle of Hainan and is one of its most famous tourist symbols: it was in fact classified as a Class A tourist attraction.

Its name (five fingers) derives from its five peaks and the beliefs that surround them: it is said that the five peaks represent the five divinities of the Li ethic group. In the past, Mount Wuzhi was used as a strategic base for Hainan’s red army.

The famous ballet 红色娘子军 hongse niangzi jun “the red woman soldier” had Mount Wuzhi as its setting! Around Mount Wuzhi there’s a reserve where two rivers originate: the Wanquan and Changhua. In this reserve you’ll also find a beautiful forest that contains various typical Chinese varieties.

The mountain of the Seven Spirits (in Chinese qi xian liang 七仙岭), also known as Qizhiling, is called that because of its seven jagged peaks (a very lovely landscape!), and is another of Hainan’s best tourist attractions, about 39 km southeast of Mount Wuzhi.

The highest peak goes up to 1100 meters above sea level and the average annual temperature goes between 27 degrees Celsius and a low of 18 degrees.

There are many legends about this mountain, but what most attracts tourists, besides the possibility of excellent climbing, are the hot springs that are found within the surrounding tropical forest.

Bo’Ao 博鳌 is a town on the east coast of Hainan, famous as the site of the Boao Forum For Asia ( BFA ), an annual meeting of the most important functionaries, economists and important people from all of Asia.

This annual meeting is so important that various high ranking government officials have presented and even launched works with opening speeches: in 2019, Li Keqiang and in 2018, Xi Jiping. Topics at the BFA are focused on the economy, integration, cooperation, society, and in particular, the environment.

In the past this forum has also addressed the entrance of China into the World Organization of Commerce, as well as the economic crisis of Southeast Asia in the 90’s.

The geopolitical strategy of “ the Pacific ascension of China ” was an extremely important discussion for the forum of 2004. Besides the annual meeting, the BFA also sponsors other forums and meetings regarding matters of principal Asian issues.

In any case, Bo’Ao is peaceful coastal town that offers comforts and relaxation thanks to its countless restaurants and luxury hotels.

If you want to visit it, you can take a trip to the residence of the Cai family: this is a beautiful and lavish ancient residence built around 1934 by the Cai brothers, two magnates from the rubber industry.

Sanya 三亚 is a top shelf vacation destination! Some call it the Hawaii of China… you decide! Sanya is the southernmost city in China and has 650 thousand inhabitants, excluding tourists. Thanks to its tropical climate, white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters, Sanya has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in all of Asia.

Despite that, Sanya is facing some challenges as it continues to expand at a pace that is quick but unsustainable: a lack of infrastructure to sustain tourism, difficulty in getting there due to flights and airport capacity, noise pollution and traffic.

The natural reserves (which I recommend that you visit) of Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park and Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve are located near Yalong Bay, where a luxury resort has been built: the Yalong Bay National Tourism Holiday.

At Sanya, besides being able to party 24 hours a day, you can attend numerous events that are held with a certain regularity, such as fashion shows and concerts for example.

In recent years, different species of dolphin, including the Chinese white dolphin which is facing extinction, appear from time to time along Sanya’s coasts. Sanya, actually, is divided into three distinct areas: Sanya Bay, Dadonghai Bay and Yalong Bay.

The monkey island of Nanwan (in Chinese, nanwan hou dao ziran baohu qu 南湾猴岛自然保护区) has been a natural reserve for monkeys covering an area of 1000 hectares since 1965.

The island, also reachable from Sanya, is a monkey paradise thanks to its weather and inviting environment rich with vegetation (in particular, fruit trees).

There are almost 2000 monkeys on the island, divided into about 30 groups; 4 of these groups have been trained to entertain visitors (something I would never endorse!).

Anyway, in view of the convenience of getting there, Nanwan Island is a place I’d recommend that you visit.

Another typical place I’d recommend, especially if you want to eat excellent fresh seafood, is the famous Banqiao Lu fish market ( Banqiao lui haixian shichang 板桥路海鲜市场) in Haikou, where you can taste hearty seafood meals among all the fuss, laughter and toasts to the Chinese that we all love and hate.

Staying on the theme of food, in my opinion, you should head over to the gastronomic street of Haikou Qilou 海口骑楼: a street filled with kiosks and counters that sell typical street food of Hainan, like eastern mountain mutton ( dongshan yang 东山羊), Hele steamed crab ( Hele xie 和乐蟹), Qionghai roasted duck ( jiaji ya 加积鸭) and Wenchang chicken ( wenchang ji 文昌鸡), with rice and peanuts.

Hainan’s cuisine is known for being lighter and less spicy compared with the rest of China. It goes without saying that its island location means that seafood dominates.

They eat a lot of crabs, shrimp and all types of fish taken from local waters. On the side you can eat rice or opt for noodles.

The laoba cha 老爸茶 are typical taverns found on the island of Hainan where they serve different varieties of tea, steamed sandwiches and other Chinese snacks typical of the island. These three Chinese characters are very interesting: laoba 老爸 refers to old people, while cha 茶 means tea.

The laoba cha , were traditionally simple wooden tea houses (usually poor), where old people of the area would come to drink a friendly cup of tea and tell stories with their friends. Long ago, women had a very low status, so they had no time to spend at tea houses that were therefore “reserved” for men.

Usually, the laoba cha are found underneath coconut trees (which are famous in Hainan), filling the streets they face with the smell of tea; some of these tea houses are now elegantly and finely decorated, but the best remain traditional, poor, wooden, without decoration and with an old fan attached to the ceiling to vent the air during the hottest and most humid seasons: a unique trait that is slowly disappearing with globalization, even in China.

To close, you should know that the Chinese on Hainan have an unusual custom: they add milk and sugar to their tea, English-style!

Located off the coast of China, Hainan is a fascinating province to visit. It boasts balmy weather, beautiful beaches, and outs tanding tropical scenery. This makes it a fine coastal vacation destination for those looking to escape China’s big cities. Its main island, Hainan Island, is one of China’s largest, second to Taiwan.

Hainan’s capital city is Haikou, which is located towards the north and is the island’s administrative headquarters as well as an important economic and cultural hub. Besides Haikou City, the other area of interest is Sanya , a top tourist destination which boasts an array of beautiful sandy beaches .

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hainan’s population was 8,671,518, but the population size is estimated to have grown to about 10 million since then. Haikou is the largest city, with a population of about 2,046,189.

In 2009, the New York Times dubbed Hainan the ‘Eastern Hawaii’ or ‘Chinese Hawaii’ thanks to its resemblance to Hawaii. Imagine the bright sun and warm sandy coast or the clean shores and pale sea that Hawaii is notable for. Hainan is blessed with the same fantastic natural features. Furthermore, Hainan’s beaches are normally warm when the rest of China is cold.

For many years, Hainan has been famous for its yearly festivals. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Coconut Island’ because of its massive coconut production, the province hosts an International Coconut Festival yearly either in March or April. There are many fun activities during this festival, ranging from coconut tasting to martial art contests.

During the same time, the province marks the San Yue San Festival, which was traditionally a time for the locals prayed for a bountiful harvest. Lately, the festival has evolved and is now also known as a love festival since young people seeking love often turn up to pray for matters of the heart.

These sandy beaches are clean, quiet, and safe for all visitors. The sand’s surface is comfortable to walk on and the weather is usually favorable for those looking to scuba dive, swim or surf.

Haikou boasts at least 40 ancient volcanoes that are stunning to behold. For someone who wants to create a buzz on social media, a video session at the Volcanic Cluster Geopark is one option to consider.

This historic botanical garden is the perfect destination for plant lovers. Stretching a distance of about 98.84 acres, Xinglong Tropical Garden is not just an agricultural center but also a tourist attraction. It is famous for the ‘mystery fruit’ which makes everything that you eat after eating it taste sweet.

Hiking has never been more fun than the experience you can enjoy at Yanoda Rainforest. This tropical rainforest isn’t your standard national reserve. It features stunning waterfalls and suspension bridges. There’s also a zip line for those daring enough to try. The natural surroundings here are amazing to see.

Nanshan Temple is one of the biggest and most unique sacred places in South China. This gigantic temple is situated between the sea and the hills and is known to be home to many Buddhists. It is famous for its Guanyin Buddha statues, especially the gigantic Guangyin of Nanshan, which sits on a narrow strip of land jutting out into the middle of the sea.

If you like climbing hills, then you need to visit Luhuitou Park. It features 5 hills, of which the highest reaches an elevation of about 594 feet. Climbing this hilltop gives you a bird’s eye view of the sea and downtown Sanya. In the park, there is a massive cliff that has the word LOVE engraved on it. Thus, it is a popular place for couples in love, especially those looking to propose. Nearby is the Luhuitou Bay, which is richly supplied with sea oysters, coral trees, and jellyfish.

Nanwan is a protected island that is home to 2,000 monkey species. It is 95% green, which means it offers a great opportunity to reconnect with nature. If you are looking to see some of the world’s rare monkey species, you’ll find them at Nanwan Island. What’s more, the island is bordered by the ocean and features many coconut and jackfruit tree species.

Lastly, if you are tired of hiking and sea adventures, it might be a good idea to experience a movie set. The place to visit, in this case, is Movie Town in Haikou. This artificial town has amazing movie studios and buildings designed to shoot different movies and films. There are also amazing shops and theatres you can visit.

The best time to visit Hainan is between December and March. On Hainan, December is considered late spring while March is considered the beginning of summer. The weather during these times is mild (about 23°C - 26°C or 73.4°F - 78.8°F), which is agreeable to most visitors.

Most of the rest of China is cold and uncomfortable at these times, so you might be tempted to visit Hainan in January or February. However, it is worth noting that making the trip in late January or early February may not be a good idea as the Chinese Lunar New Year usually falls during this period, making it a hectic time for domestic travel.

The mild December-to-March weather allows you to wear a long sleeved t-shirt during the day. At night when the temperatures drop slightly, you may find it necessary to wear a light jacket, sweater or hood. So, it is wise to pack a few warm clothes to wear when the weather changes.

If you are going to the beach, wear comfortable and breathable clothes. They should also dry fast in case you decide to go for a swim in the sea. For hikers, it is a good idea to pack a pair of lightweight hiking boots. More importantly, you should remember to carry a swimsuit. The sea is quite irresistible and chances are that you may be tempted to take a swim.

In 2018, the Chinese government instituted a policy that allows visitors coming to Hainan through Sanya or Haikou to enter without a visa if they are planning to stay for less than 30 days. This policy, however, only applies to 59 nations as follows:

• Europe (40 nations) – They include Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Italy, among others.
• America (6 nations) – They include the USA, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina.
• Asia (13 nations) – They include Thailand, Singapore, Japan, UAE, South Korea, Indonesia, among others.

Putonghua (the standard Mandarin Chinese language) is the most spoken language in Hainan. For dinner, indulge in the famous Hainanese Chicken Rice and see how it compares to the ones in Singapore! Other must-try dishes are the Wenchang Chicken (which inspired the Hainanese Chicken Rice), Jiaji Duck, and Dongshan Mutton, which can all be found along Qilou food street.

Day 2: 72 Caves and Dongjiao Coconut Plantation

Wake up bright and early to visit thousand-year-old caverns at 72 Caves, and Rong Tang village – an entire village handcrafted out of volcanic rocks located right at the entrance of 72 Caves! Take bus 1 from the Evergreen Park Bus Station (万绿园) to Volcano Park Stop (火山口). After alighting, you can either take a 2.5km hike or flag down a cab to Rong Tang Village.  You will know you’re there when you see a group of grandmothers gathered in front of a village. It is customary to prepare 2 yuan (~SGD$0.42) for the grandmothers. Go through the village to get to 72 Caves. We recommend wearing hiking shoes and bringing along sunscreen and plenty of water. This will be the perfect opportunity to disconnect from city life and really immerse yourself in the beauty nature has to offer. 

 After the walk, cool down with fresh coconuts by the sea at Dongjiao Coconut Plantation. If you’re up for more activities, you can rent a bicycle and ride through the plantations. Otherwise, you can also opt to stroll along endless silver sands, and pick some seashells. If you’re hungry, fret not! You can find the freshest seafood here. Pick your favourite catch straight from fishing boats, and ask the restaurants to cook them for you! Get an authentic glimpse of the rural Hainan village life through all these activities at the charming Dongjiao Coconut Plantation. 

Day 3: Sanya Bay and Jiafeng Food Street

Start your morning with a hot bowl of the local’s favourite Hainan Breakfast noodles topped with meat sauce, roasted peanuts, and bamboo strips at Qiong Cai Wang Cuisine Restaurant. You can’t say you’ve been to Hainan if you haven’t tried out their local breakfast staple!

After that, take a 4-hour coach ride to the beautiful city of Sanya. Enjoy rustic views of Hainan’s countryside, and snap some amazing photos for keepsake. We recommend downloading film camera apps to give your photos an extra “olden day” vibe.

Head to Sanya Bay, one of the three major beaches on the island for a good dose of tropical sunshine, sand, and sea as you admire the sparkling aquamarine waters before your eyes. Quieter and less commercialized as compared to Yalong and Haitang Bay, it’s the perfect place to escape bustling crowds and just soak in the beauty of Sanya’s scenery. A paved road known as the Coconut Dream Corridor runs along the beach, where you can take a leisurely stroll during sunset and watch as the sky is lit ablaze with a myriad of colours. 

 End your day with a trip to either Sanya First Market or Jiafeng Food Street to indulge in scrumptious local street food. Succulent barbecued seafood can also be found here, along with ice cream, seafood porridge, meat skewers, and more! You will definitely be spoilt for choice. Sneak in some retail therapy too, if you want to!  

Day 4: Wuzhizhou Island

Just 30km northeast of Sanya, in Haitang Bay lays Wuzhizhou Island. Take a 10-minute boat ride from Wuzhizhou Wharf, and spend a day here exploring the island! It boasts various interesting spots such as the Lover’s Bridge, Sunrise Rock, and the Life Well. The island offers various water sports activities including parasailing, jet skiing and even scuba-diving as well! 

If you’re not much of an adrenaline junkie, opt for a tanning session at the beach, go for a swim, or frolick along the shores of White Beach. There’s a reason why it’s been coined China’s very own Maldives. Hotels are available on the island if you want to stay the night! Wake up before dawn the next morning to catch the breathtaking sunrise at Sunrise Rock. We promise it will be worth the trip to Wuzhizhou Island.

Day 5: Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone

Head back to Sanya Island, and relish in Sanya’s culture at Nanshan Temple, located in the Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone. Amidst the impressive architecture, you will find throngs of people coming to worship the statues of Guan Yin Ma and Buddha. Feel free to join in, and soak up the atmosphere too! Once you’re done, explore the other parks such as Blessing and Longevity Park, and the Hainan Custom Culture Park.  If you’re hungry, feast on some of the best vegetarian food while watching orchestral and kung fu performances. Entrance fee to the Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone is 150 yuan (~SGD31.33) for adults and 78 yuan (~SGD16.29) for children. If you want to deepen your understanding and appreciation of Buddhism, or experience how the Li and Miao ethnic minorities lead their lives, then be sure to visit the Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone! Teeming with unspoilt, luxuriant nature, Hainan Island stays true to its natural and ethnic roots with unexpected charms. Here’s why you should visit Hainan, an idyllic but oft-overlooked vacation spot, for a short, quiet getaway.

Think tropical island resorts and the usual suspects float into your headspace —  Bali , the Philippines, Tioman Island, Langkawi, and whatnot.

Yet along the same, beachy vein lies Hainan Island that’d probably never skip through your mind, especially not when the thought of it being a part of China alone might be off-putting for some.

But unlike the China many may perceive, Hainan is actually separate from the mainland, resulting in its own unique appeal, dotted with forests, beaches, sleepy towns and restful resorts. It’s not hard to understand why people call this China’s answer to Hawaii!

Here are 11 reasons why it’s time to give Hainan Island a chance to impress you.

1) White, sandy beaches galore

Naturally blessed with a coastline that stretches for days, Sanya , the southern tip of Hainan, is a buzzing beach resort hub with its 3 most popular — Dadonghai , Sanya Bay and Yalong Bay — regularly making it onto China’s top beach lists.

Authorities have made strides in ensuring the beaches remain free and open to the public, so even if you’re not shelling out for a stay at a 5-star beachfront hotel, you’re still free to revel under the sun and get lit, beaches!

For the adventurous, you can even dabble in water sports like snorkelling, scuba-diving and paragliding.

2) It has a volcano park 

What was once a cluster of over 40 volcanoes is now converted into the  Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark , with people still living in 2 “lava villages” where houses are made of volcanic rock. You can also walk through lava caves from past volcanic activity, or climb up to the rim of an extinct volcano to enter the crater itself!

3) Tropical rainforests for the outdoor adventurer

Yanoda Rainforest  isn’t your average Bukit Timah Nature Reserve; Hainan’s tourism scene is relatively new, so obviously they’d go all out to keep you captivated all day. We’re talking hiking up waterfalls, swinging suspension bridges, ziplines, and even a chance to play real-life counter strike inside the forest in full battle gear!

4) A different side of Chinese culture in Sanya

Hainan’s inhabitants have historically been a diverse bunch, housing up to 36 minority groups. This has given rise to “theme parks” / museums like  Binglanggu , which gives you an insider’s peek into the Li and Miao people, 2 of the most prominent minorities, the former also one of Hainan’s oldest.

Spanning over 600 football fields, the replica village houses plenty of exhibits to learn about these people — how facial tattoos form their identity, their food, customs, and clothing. You can even catch a live performance to watch those traditions come to life!

5) Luxury accommodation on a friendlier budget

A country that champions its tropical, resort-like atmosphere is bound to attract tons of luxury establishments. The good news is that you can still live like a king in Hainan without breaking the bank — get a room at 5-star hotel Raffles Hainan for as low as ~S$145/night, with a spacious room, private personal butler, swimming pool and more.

6) Haikou’s old towns and tea culture

Up north, step back in time and walk through the cobbled roads of Haikou combining distinct Asian and European influences hailing from China’s colonial past, from the old streets of Qilou to picture-perfect Movie Town Haikou .

Haikou also embraces its tea culture very fervently — tea houses packed with hoards of middle-aged men chilling are also part of Haikou’s everyday life, an accurate depiction of the leisurely pace at which locals live. This also earned such tea houses the household name of “ daddy teahouse ” (老爸茶馆).

7) Unique Hainanese cuisine

Hong Kong has its 4 Heavenly Kings , and so does Hainan in the food department — free-range  Wenchang Chicken (the OG inspiration behind the Hainanese Chicken Rice we all know and love), grain-fed and lightly-prepared Jiaji Duck, famously tender Dongshan Mutton usually stewed in coconut milk, and meaty Hele Crab.

Luckily for tourists, you can find them all at Qi Lou Snack Street !

Thanks to Hainan’s perpetual tropical weather a la Singapore, coconuts are also commonplace in Hainan. That’s also why capital Haikou is aptly-known as “Coconut City”.

8) Day trips to nearby islands

If you crave a different scenery you can easily take a day out to any of Hainan’s nearby islands, like Boundary Island  and Wuzhizhou Island . Other than the usual water sports like parasailing and banana boats, you can also dive into the waters to get up close with corals!

9) Home to the world’s only protected monkey island nature reserve

Get up close with the 2,000 or so monkeys at  Nanwan Monkey Island , which is state-protected and 95% covered in greenery. One way to enter is via a cable car traversing over 2km of sea, the longest ocean-crossing ropeway in China!

10) Get to Hainan under 4 hours from S$215

Low-cost carriers like Scoot fly to Haikou Meilan International Airport from S$215 and you can get there in just 3.5 hours — one of the airlines with the shortest flight time.

It’s a short flight, but if it overlaps with breakfast or lunch time (mine did) you can pre-order meals like their Singapore Signature Chicken Rice. Nothing better than having something Hainanese to ramp you up for your trip.

11) Your gateway to visit China, Hong Kong or Taiwan 

Planning a longer vacation? Visit Hainan as a short stopover to a longer trip to China! You can actually cover Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong via train from Hainan itself. Short flights from Haikou Airport are also possible — fly to Taiwan in less than 3 hours, or Hong Kong in 1.5–2 hours!

I visited both Bali and Sanya, I love Sanya Bay more, the beach is very clean and sand is soft. The night life in Sanya is amazing, it deserves a serious visit!

Hey Ethan, you’re right! Thanks for pointing this out. Independent Singaporean travellers can stay up to 15 days but if you’re entering with a recognised tour group, you’re allowed to stay up to 30 days.

In addition to the ethnic festivals, the 29th day of the 2nd lunar month, the 19th day of the 6th lunar month and the 19th day of the 9th lunar month are considered as Guanyin's birthday, the day to get enlightened and the day to be a nun respectively. • Best Places to Visit in Hainan : Hainan Coastline

The entire Hainan Island in oval shape, allowing you to enjoy a round cycling along its coastline. However, no matter you want to conquer its east coastline or west coastline, it is never an easy task. The east coastline measures about 323 kilometers. Because part of this cycling road is adjacent to the South China Ocean with amazing sea view, this route enjoys the best popularity amongst cyclists. Rising out of the South China Sea between Guangdong and Vietnam, Hainan Island (海南岛, hăinán dăo) marks the southernmost undisputed limit of Chinese authority, a 300km-broad spread of beaches, mountain scenery and the effects of exploitation. Haikou, Hainan’s capital, is of importance only as a transit point; the most obvious reason to visit the island is to flop down on the warm, sandy beaches near the southern city of Sanya – and, as a rest cure after months on the mainland, it’s a very good one. To be honest, there’s not a whole lot more to the place, though anyone hooked on marine adventure sports can explore, surprisingly perhaps, Hainan’s emerging scuba diving and surfing potential.

A teeming, exotic and alluring metropolis, Hong Kong is uniquely rich in both cultural diversity and contrasts. In fact, there is so much packed into Hong Kong, it can be hard to know where to start, which is where this unique trip comes in.

Today a province in its own right, Hainan was historically the “Tail of the Dragon”, an enigmatic full stop to the Han empire. Chinese settlements were established around the coast in 200 AD, but for millennia the island was seen as being inhabited by unspeakably backward races, only fit to be a place of exile. So complete was Hainan’s isolation that, as recently as the 1930s, ethnic Li, who first settled here over two thousand years ago, still lived a hunter-gatherer existence in the interior highlands.

Modern Hainan is no primitive paradise, however. The Japanese occupied the island in 1939, and by the end of the war had executed a full third of Hainan’s male population in retaliation for raids on their forces by Chinese guerrillas. Ecological decline began in the 1950s during the Great Leap Forward, and escalated through the 1960s with the clearing of Hainan’s forests to plant cash crops. Tourism seems to be the sole reliable source of income these days, with the island promoted as China’s tropical holiday destination.

Hainan’s extremely hot and humid wet season lasts from June to October. It’s better to visit between February and April, when the climate is generally dry and tropically moderate, and prices reduce considerably.

Hainan’s million-strong Li population take their name from the big topknot (li) which men once wore. They probably arrived on Hainan from Guangxi about 200 BC, when they occupied the coast and displaced the aboriginal inhabitants before themselves being driven into the highlands by later Chinese migrations. The Li built villages with distinctive tunnel-shaped houses, evolved their own shamanistic religion, and used poisoned arrows to bring down game. Li women were known for their weaving skills, and the fact that, until very recently, many got their faces heavily tattooed with geometric patterns – apparently to make them undesirable to raiding parties of slavers from the coast, or rival clans. The latter have never coexisted very well, quarrelling to this day over territorial boundaries, and only united in their dislike of the Han Chinese – there were fourteen major rebellions against their presence on the island during the Qing era alone.

Though traditional life has all but vanished over the last half-century, there are still a few special events to watch out for. Best is the San Yue San festival (held on the third day of the third lunar month), the most auspicious time of the year in which to choose a partner, while in more remote corners of the highlands, funerals are traditionally celebrated with gunfire and three days of hard drinking by male participants.

Touted as Hainan’s second “native minority” by the tourist literature, the Miao are comparatively recent arrivals, forcibly recruited from Guizhou province as mercenaries to put down a Li uprising during the Ming dynasty. When the money ran out, the Miao stopped fighting and settled in the western highlands, where they formed a fifty-thousand-strong community in the remotest of valleys.

Chinese maps of China always show a looped extension of the southern borders reaching 1500km down through the South China Sea to within spitting distance of Borneo, enclosing a host of reefs and minute islands. These sit over what might be major oil and gas reserves, and are consequently claimed by every nation in the region – China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have all put in their bids, based on historical or geographic associations.

Occupied by Japan during the 1940s but unclaimed after World War II, the Spratly and Paracel islands are perhaps the most contentious groups. Vietnam and China both declared ownership of the Paracels in the 1970s, and 70 Vietnamese soldiers were killed when the Chinese seized the islands in 1974, coming to blows again in 1988 when the Chinese navy sank two Vietnamese gunboats. Then, in 1995, the Philippines stepped in, destroying Chinese territorial markers erected over the most westerly reefs in the Spratly group and capturing a nearby Chinese trawler. Ongoing minor brawls encouraged the nations of the region – including China – to hammer out a landmark agreement in November 2002, which basically allows access for all, while territorial disputes are settled one by one. However, neither China nor Vietnam has kept to the letter of the agreement, and indeed in July of the same year, China established Sansha City on the Paracels to oversee its territory in the South China Sea.

In 2012, the International Court of Justice ruling on the “Nicaragua v Colombia” case (about islands in the Caribbean) cast doubt on whether many of the tiny South China Sea Islands would generate an Exclusive Economic Zone around them under international law. This greatly reduces their economic significance, but not their use as a focus of nationalistic fervour – a difficult issue where China and Japan are concerned.

Some 320km across the island from Haikou on Hainan’s southern coast, SANYA is, sooner or later, the destination of every visitor to the island. Sanya City itself is a rather pleasant, once-scruffy fishing port, surrounded by concrete high-rise holiday resorts, that has twice hosted the Miss World contest, but what pulls in the crowds – a huge number of whom are Russian – are surrounding beaches at Dadonghai and Yalong. Chinese tourists also flock to overcrowded and overpriced scenic spots such as Tianya Haijiao, all of which are of little interest to foreigners.

It must be said that though the beaches here are good, a trip to Sanya can involve a few irritations, especially for those on a budget: at peak times – from October to February and especially Chinese New Year – room rates soar and the usual tourist hassles intensify. Off-season, however, beaches are uncrowded and the atmosphere is pretty mellow.

Low visibility and only moderate maximum depths don’t make Hainan the most exciting location for scuba diving, but it can be good fun and there’s always the novelty of having dived in China. Don’t bother with Dadonghai; the best areas near Sanya are just east at Yalong Bay (clear water and best for its coral growth, and a variety of fish); Tianya Haijiao, over to the far west of Sanya Bay (good for molluscs); and – best of all – Wuzhizhou Island, in Lingshui Bay around 30km east of Sanya (coral, fish, molluscs and crystal-clear water). Bookings can be made through virtually any hotel (the hostels are the best), but touts, who are more amenable to bargaining, often patrol the beachfront at Dadonghai and Yalong Bay.

Yalong Bay is the least expensive, and boat dives around the west of the bay for certified divers run at ¥580–680 for one tank, with additional tanks ¥200. Without certification, you can do a controlled 30-minute “resort” dive for ¥300–400. Snorkelling trips cost around ¥200 for a couple of hours.

Trips to Tianya Haijao (diving around West Island) and Wuzhizhou Island are both about fifty percent more expensive than Yalong Bay, and require you to pay an “island landing fee” of ¥148 on top of diving costs. You can dive at Wuzhizhou for considerably less, however, by booking in nearby Houhai Bay, whose operators dive on the same sites but don’t “land”.

Hainan has some of the best surfing beaches in China, and there are two easily accessible surf resorts on the east coast with foreign co-owners. Riyue Bay, 19km outside Wanning about halfway down the east coast, is home to the Riyue Bay Surfing Club who rent boards for ¥100/day; or you can get 2hr lessons in English for ¥400 (surfinghainan.com). Closer to Sanya, and with warmer water, Houhai Bay is where you’ll find the Karma Surf Hostel and School who have similar rates and surf from a number of different beaches depending on the season.

Northeastern and eastern swells bring waves of around 1–2m most of the year, though during typhoon season (June–Sept), waves will be more like 3–5m and sometimes up to 6m. Riyue Bay is a northeast open bay and probably better during the winter months, when it gets up to 5m waves, and is hence the setting for the ISA Hainan International Surfing Festival each January, and the smaller ASB Hainan Classic competition in November ( hainaninternationalsurfingfestival.com ). If you know your surfing, Houhai would be the Huntington Beach, and Riyue more like the Hawaiian North Shore.

Our family's travel along and off the beaten track

A Trip to Haikou, Hainan Island

Mummy and Sis visited relatives in Haikou together. Since sightseeing is not the main purpose of this trip, we only made a brief trip to Qi Lou Old Street .

In this post, I’ll share some travel tips and photos from the trip.

Transport & Traffic

Transportation within Haikou is affordable and convenient via either public buses or metered taxis.

We took bus service no. 38 from the hotel in and out of the town centre at RMB1 per trip, regardless of distance or no of stops. For their local seniors, it’s half price at RMB0.50. The buses were air-conditioned with clean interiors. My only grouse was that during one bus ride the driver was smoking throughout the entire journey, filling the whole bus with second-hand smoke!

Do note that boarding of the buses are from the front and alighting from the back. Drop the exact fare into the fare box as you board and press the buzzer before the stop you’re alighting to alert the driver.

Taxis are also easy hailed along the roads, with flag-down rate at RMB10 for first 3 kilometers and RMB2 for each succeeding kilometer. Do check with the taxi drivers if they’re willing to go to your destination before boarding. Private ‘cabs’ or vehicles for hire services through apps are also used by younger locals with rates similar to taxis.

As with travelling to any other destination, it is important to abide with the local traffic rules. We understood from the locals that policing has stepped up and traffic offenders disciplined with corrective work orders. One of these includes wearing a sash with traffic slogans and direct traffic at busy roads.

Haikou has seen much changes since our last visit more than a decade ago as the city keeps good pace in development.

But sadly, we observed that the use of the local dialect appears to be on the decline as Chinese is more widely spoken among the younger generations.

Like in any other big cities, air-conditioned malls make shopping and dining easier. This is one of the malls we shopped at: Main Plaza (名門廣場). Besides, shopping at the supermarket (our fav pastime), we enjoyed afternoon tea in one of its cafes. The cakes and pastries looked so tempting!

Local Food Produce

Seafood, coconuts, coffee and pepper are some of Hainan’s major food produce. If you’re keen on any of these, it’s worth getting some home from any of their local produce shops. Their yellow chili sauce packs a punch and goes well with poached or stewed meat and noodles. Worth trying if you’re a fan of hot and spicy food. Dried seafood produce, such as scallops, cuttle fish, clams, etc. are fresh and we bought quite a bit!

Eating out is convenient with local food stalls, eateries and restaurants within easy reach. Cuisines from other parts of China are also readily available. We tried the dumplings at this restaurant. Don’t be deceived by their looks. They were super yummy!

Whilst dining at two of their local restaurants, we noticed that minimum spending was not required for use of their private dining rooms. It’s recommended to ask if any of such room is available. Although the rooms are usually not luxurious, a private dining space can save yourself from inhaling in second hand smoke.

Haikou offers a good variety of fresh seafood. This is a dish we think worth recommending: a type of eel the locals call 粉鳝, deep-fried till super crispy.

SINGAPORE: A local diving instructor based in China’s island province of Hainan has been fined 80,000 yuan (US$11,006) in a viral case where she and three domestic tourists were left stranded at sea on a diving trip and had to make a two-hour swim back to shore.

Investigations found that the instructor lacked the proper qualifications. Local officials have ordered her to stop offering diving classes, while also fining two companies involved in the case.

The incident has sparked discussion on Chinese social media, with many expressing shock that such a thing could happen while others took aim at the penalties meted out, criticising them as insufficient.

RECOUNTING THE INCIDENT

State-run China National Radio (CNR) reported on Monday (Jun 25) that the harrowing incident happened on Jun 9 in Wanning, a city located along the southeast coast of Hainan.

A tourist from Zhejiang, surnamed Jin, told CNR he responded to an advertisement by a diving coach offering a freediving course. The coach, surnamed Meng, said students would have to dive to a depth of 12 m as part of the certification test.

After a training session at a hotel swimming pool, Mr Jin, along with two other tourists and Ms Meng, boarded a boat and headed to the waters near Zhouzai island - off the coast of Wanning -  for the test. There were also other passengers who planned to go snorkelling.

According to Mr Jin, the diving spot was decided on the day itself. Upon reaching the site, the group realised the waters were too shallow for diving, but adequate for snorkelling.

“The coach (Ms Meng) asked the boat’s captain if there was anyone who could bring us somewhere deeper, and that we would return within two hours. The captain agreed,” Mr Jin said. They then got on a banana boat, and a crew member towed them to the new dive site via a motorboat.

According to the CNR report, the group then proceeded with their diving test, which took about two hours. After completion, they waited to be picked up, but eventually realised something was wrong.

“I felt something was not right,” said Mr Jin. “We informed the captain when we disembarked from the boat … but no one showed up.”

At that moment, the tourists wanted to swim towards shore as the sun had yet to set. But the diving coach Ms Meng was certain someone would pick them up and asked the group to wait a little while more. 

“She said (the boat crew) got off work at 5pm, they wouldn’t have forgotten us. We finished our diving test before 4pm, and we waited until 6.15pm,” said Mr Jin. “We waited two hours and no one came to pick us up.” 

The group eventually began swimming back to shore, reaching dry land at about 8pm, according to CNR.

Mr Jin’s ordeal swiftly went viral on Chinese social media, with many people expressing shock that such an incident could happen. One Weibo user described the incident as “terrifying”, in a comment that drew close to 1,300 likes.

“Not a single communication device, nor a boat to wait (for you) when you bring someone out to dive in the sea. What if something happens? How are you supposed to get help?” wrote another user.

INVESTIGATION FINDINGS

As the incident made the rounds online, local officials responded, saying they had launched investigations. On Tuesday (Jun 25) night, the Wanning city government published a detailed report on its official WeChat account.

According to the authorities, Ms Meng was only a “social sports instructor” and not a qualified diving instructor as she had claimed to be. Mr Jin and the two other tourists had each paid 3,480 yuan for her services. 

The report stated that Ms Meng had contacted a company to assist her in getting a boat out to sea - with a charter fee of 1,150 yuan and a 300 yuan deposit. 

After agreeing on the price and duration, the company’s manager engaged another firm, a sailing club, to take a vessel out to sea on Jun 9. 

On the day of the incident, Ms Meng’s group boarded the vessel with six other tourists to the waters near Zhouzai island. 

The report stated that the vessel’s captain, surnamed Wang, arranged for a crew member to transport Ms Meng’s group to a spot 600 m away for their diving test. Ms Meng told the crew member that they would take about one and a half hours, and it was agreed the boat would return to pick them up.

Mr Wang believed the diving expedition would take longer than Ms Meng estimated, and decided to transport another batch of tourists to Zhouzai island before picking her group up.

As a result, no boat was on hand to pick up Ms Meng and the three tourists when they finished their diving test at around 4pm.

“With no phones and no way to contact anyone, the four divers (eventually) began swimming towards the shore without waiting for the vessel to pick them up - each pulling an emergency floating ring,” the report stated.

The vessel returned to the waters near Zhouzai island close to 4.30pm. A crew member was sent to pick up Ms Meng and the tourists but was unable to locate them.

After a search, the crew member returned to the boat at 5.20pm and informed Mr Wang that the group was missing. They continued to search the area for another 10 minutes.

According to the report, Ms Meng claimed she had seen the vessel during her swim back to shore but was unable to make contact due to the sea conditions.

Local police were notified of the incident at about 6.45pm. A total of 97 rescue workers and four rescue vessels were dispatched in the search.

Meanwhile, Ms Meng and the three tourists reached the coast at about 8pm. They managed to borrow a phone to contact the authorities and were taken to the hospital. The local government said the group were discharged the next day after their conditions were deemed stable. 

ORDERED TO STOP ACTIVITIES

Local authorities have meted out a 100,000 yuan fine to the company that assisted Ms Meng in getting a boat out to sea. The firm has also been ordered to cease all diving activities.

The sailing club that was subsequently engaged by this company has been fined 1,000 yuan for failing to report the trip out to sea as required by law. Officials say they intend to impose a 100,000 yuan fine on top of this, without specifying the reason.

As for Ms Meng, she has been fined 80,000 yuan, while the money she received from the three tourists for the diving course has been confiscated. She has also been ordered to stop offering diving courses.

Chinese netizens have taken aim at the punishments handed out, with many criticising them as inadequate.

“(Just a fine) of this much money? This is murder!,” went one remark in the comments section of Sina News’ account on Weibo.

“Attempted murder and the punishment is a 100,000 yuan fine, LOL,” another comment read.

The Wanning city government said the incident had exposed “problems”, and that it will “strengthen” the supervision of diving and other water-related business ventures. It will also severely crack down on all kinds of “illegal solicitation” online and offline, and bar unlicensed operations.

The Overseas Tour Operators Hainan Tour 2024 kicks off

CHINA . The Overseas Tour Operators Hainan Tour 2024 commenced today (24 June) in China’s island province and will run until 29 June.

Co-hosted by the China Tourism Academy; the Hainan Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Sports; and the Sanya Municipal People’s Government, this event aims to implement the ‘Inbound Tourism Promotion Plan’ and the ‘Nihao! China’ national tourism campaign initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The purpose of these campaigns is to promote cultural and tourism exchanges between China and other countries, expand the international tourism market in Hainan, and strengthen target marketing overseas.

BANGKOK: Thai durian exporters to China have been warned not to be complacent as China has started cultivating “Hainan durian”, priced at 300 baht for half a kg, with significant growth potential.

The Thailand Office of Trade Promotion in Xiamen, China, said that China was able to produce Hainan durian, which is considered a major success for the Chinese durian industry.

Thai exporters should seek ways to improve the quality and freshness of Thai durians to maintain their high standing in both the Chinese and global markets, the office advised.

According to a report from China News Service, China has been growing durians extensively in areas like Hainan, Sanya, and Yucai.

The durians were growing well, reaching the size of volleyballs.

The first batch from Hainan is expected to hit the market by late June.

This year, approximately 500 trees have started yielding the fruit, the report said.

Hainan durian has reportedly been under cultivation for four years, and this year marks the first season of yields. A four-year-old durian tree can produce up to 19 fruit, each weighing around 2kg.

The harvesting season for Hainan durian spans from June to August, with peak harvest expected in July.

According to some estimates, durian will be cultivated in Hainan on over 6,600 hectares of land within the next 3-5 years.

However, durian cultivation on the island faces challenges such as limited production capacity and unpredictable weather, including typhoons.

The fragile stems of the durian tree make it difficult to withstand strong winds.

Even though it has been successfully cultivated in Hainan province, the terrain there is still not ideal for durian.

Typically, durians are large, perennial fruit trees that thrive in temperatures between 25-30 degrees Celsius, making them best suited for “tropical climate” like those found in the Asean region.

As of May 2024, Hainan durian has started entering the Chinese market about a month earlier than expected, with a selling price of approximately 60 yuan per jin (1 jin equals 0.5kg).

Due to limited cultivation areas in China, the supply remains low, keeping prices high (Thai durians retail at around 30-35 yuan per jin).

"When China is able to produce Hainan durian, it would mark another achievement for the Chinese durian industry.

"However, it would not significantly impact the import of Thai durians due to limited production.

"Nevertheless, Thailand cannot afford to be complacent, as the Thai durian market may face competition from the emerging Hainan durian, which is gaining recognition," the office said.

However, based on its taste, this seems to be of less concern. The “taste of Chinese durian” is reportedly quite mild, with a faint aroma.

When it comes to texture, it almost lacks any creaminess.

The flesh of the durian sometimes evokes more of a sensation of unripe bananas, and other tasters were similarly unimpressed.

“There’s almost no flavour at all” was one of the harsh criticisms, with the consensus among tasters being that Chinese durian is “dry, hard, and bland”.

But the office has suggested that Thailand continue to develop high-quality, fresh durians to maintain its dominance in the Chinese and global markets.

Although Hainan durian is becoming an alternative for Chinese consumers, Thai durians can still hold a competitive edge if they maintain their quality and consumer trust in terms of both taste and quality.

The opportunity for Thai durian imports to remain in demand in China and worldwide persists, provided that Thai producers continue to adapt and improve according to consumer needs.

According to data from Global Trade Atlas, China currently imports fresh durians from three Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Between January and April 2024, China imported the highest quantity of fresh durians from Thailand, totalling 121,398.253 tons, valued at US$716.69 million, accounting for 65.65% of market share, although this represents a 48.71% decline.

Thailand has yielded market share mainly to Vietnam.

Vietnam is the second-largest supplier, with 79,186.190 tons, valued at $369.21 million, holding 33.82% of market share, but up 82.93%.

The Philippines ranks third, supplying 1,778.123 tons, valued at $5.807,841 million, with a market share of 0.53% and a growth rate of $474.5 million. - The Nation/ANN

China space probe returns to Earth with rare rocks from far side of the Moon

A Chinese lunar probe has returned to Earth with soil and rock samples from the little-explored far side of the Moon.

The Chang’e-6 probe has landed in Mongolia with a 2.5-million year old volcanic rock and other material.

This material will help scientists discover the geographical differences between the two sides of the Moon.

It is also hoped that these materials will reveal more details about the formation of Earth, the Moon, and the solar system.

But the two-month expedition was fraught with risks because it is rare for a lunar probe to travel to this part of the Moon.

This side of the Moon can prove challenging because it is covered in difficult terrain like uneven surfaces and craters.

The probe was launched in early May of this year from the Chinese island of Hainan and managed to land on a crater on the south pole of the Moon two weeks later.

China is also the first country ever in the world to do this, having previously sent one in 2019.

A Chinese flag was planted on the surface after the probe used a robotic arm to collect the soil and rocks.

The country is vying to compete with the likes of both the US and Russia in the space race – having invested huge sums of money in its Space programme.

This has led Neil Melville-Kenney, a technical officer at the European Space Agency (ESA), to express concern about this space race.

He said: ‘I’m glad there has been a resurgence in this (space) race, but of course I would like to see us racing alongside each other and together.

‘We know that (the far side of the moon) is literally a different place, it is made of different materials than the near side of the moon, it has a different history… it’s really of fundamental scientific importance to get these samples back.’

He said the ESA will meet with the China National Space Administration in October to discuss further collaboration.

‘This collaboration that we have at the moment (with China) is a small step, this was started quite a while ago, perhaps the situations were a little bit different then. Going forward I hope there will be more collaboration,’ he added.

The news was welcomed by China’s President Xi Jinping who said the landing is a ‘landmark achievement’ for the country.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the samples taken from the Moon will now be sent to Beijing for analysis.

The probe is named after the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e like its predecessors in the Chinese Lunar Exploration Programme.
