Review: UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card

avatar

This is our full review of the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card .

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card is UOB’s offering for the crowded 120k credit card space. In this segment of the market, banks are targeting higher-income earners looking for benefits that can elevate their lifestyle. These cards typically provide better card benefits over their ability to earn frequent flyer miles.

For folks who are in the market for shiny metal credit cards, UOB’s got your back. It even deliberately named it the “Metal Card” probably for SEO purposes.

The card has undergone some big transformations to its benefits in June 2023. Prior to that, it had never been the most exciting credit card in the 120k category. However, because of the change, it has become more enticing and provides a lot more value for the high annual fee that it charges. We’ll see if it now deserves a coveted spot in your wallet.

UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card

A good set of benefits, but not enough to justify its high annual fees.

Earning Miles

⚠️ mpd stands for “miles per dollar”. It’s the number of miles you’ll earn per dollar spent on the card.

You’ll earn UNI$ when you spend with the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card. These UNI$ can then be transferred into frequent flyer programs for flight redemptions.

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card has a reasonable mpd earning rate for a general spending card. Unfortunately, it does not have any bonus categories that can let you earn more miles for your spending.

In general, this is not a card that you’ll want to use to accumulate miles for your next free business-class flight.

UOB Transfer Partners

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card does not boast the most transfer partners compared to its competition from other banks . It only has the standard KrisFlyer and Asia Miles programs that most other credit cards have.

As a UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card cardholder, all transfers from UNI$ to frequent flyer miles are free of charge . This can amount to a substantial saving as those ~S$25 transfer fees can add up over time.

Does UOB Pool Points Together?

Yes, UOB allows you to pool your hard-earned UNI$ across different UOB credit cards together when making a redemption.

This is great if you have other UOB cards like the UOB Preferred Platinum Card or the UOB Lady’s Cards which are amazing cards for earning a ton of FFP miles. Remember, as a card member of the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card, you do not need to pay any fees to transfer UNI$ over to FFP miles.

Therefore, having the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card can be a great amazing hack to avoid paying those S$25-27 fees to transfer UNI$ earned through other UOB cards.

Expiry of UNI$

UNI$ earned from the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card will expire 2 years after the end of the quarter from which they were earned . This is quite a mouthful, so let’s break it down with a simple example.

Earn an additional 15,000 miles Every Year

You can earn an additional 15,000 miles at card renewal every year if you’ve spent a minimum of S$100,000 in the previous membership year.

S$100,000 is a considerable sum of money to spend every year on a single credit card. Moreover, the standard earning rates of the UOB Visa Infinite are not high enough for me to even recommend them for regular spending. The opportunity cost of using this card for spending is too high, considering there are many cards out there that provide 4-6 mpd on bonus category spending.

Therefore, I would imagine this is a benefit that will be applicable to a very small subset of individuals only.

Sign Up Offer

The sign-up offer is available to new and existing UOB credit card members . The main difference lies in the number of miles awarded.

You are considered a new UOB credit card member if you do not currently have any UOB credit cards and have not cancelled any UOB credit cards within the last 12 months before your application.

For both sign-up offers, cardholders must pay the 1st year annual fee of S$648 and spend S$4,000 within 30 days of your card approval .

⚠️  Sign up for the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card here!

Monthly GrabGift Vouchers

uob infinite card travel insurance

You’ll receive 2 S$5 GrabGift vouchers every month for being a UOB Visa Infinite cardholder. The voucher codes will be sent via SMS and they can be used across various Grab services like Transport, Food, Mart and Express.

Over the course of a year, that adds up to S$120 in value . If you’re a frequent user of Grab services, you should be able to use the vouchers with ease and can count them at face value.

Unlimited Complimentary Airport Lounge Access

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card provides unlimited complimentary airport lounge access for the primary cardholder and 1 guest via Dragon Pass.

This is one of the most generous lounge offerings out of most other credit cards in the market. The only other card that comes close would be the Citi Prestige Card which has similar complimentary limits but is provided by the Priority Pass program instead.

Personally, I’d choose Priority Pass over Dragon Pass because Priority Pass has a restaurant program that gives you complimentary meals in select airport restaurants.

Pan Pacific DISCOVERY Platinum Status

UOB Visa Infinite Metal cardholders will be upgraded to Pan Pacific’s DISCOVERY Platinum Status .

The Pan Pacific Group has 550 hotels that span across 77 countries.

uob infinite card travel insurance

It does not have the footprint of more prominent hotel brands like Marriott or Hilton, but if you stay at Pan Pacific hotels frequently, this status upgrade can be fairly useful for you.

Dining Benefits

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card offers various discounts across various dining establishments. These restaurants are mostly situated within hotel properties.

COMO Group Benefits

It appears that UOB has struck a good deal with the COMO Group. There are multiple COMO Group-related deals for card members.

  • 10% off at Club21 and Kids21 Stores
  • 4th night free at select COMO Hotels and Resorts
  • 20% off COMO Shambhala Anywhere App annual subscription

These are very specific benefits and can only really benefit you if you’re already a COMO group patron.

As for the 4th night free at select COMO Hotels and Resorts, there are some valuable properties in the Maldives that this offer applies to. A night at any of these hotels easily goes for S$1300 , so you’re making a huge saving if you can take advantage of this. This promotion only lasts until 31 December 2023 .

Golf Benefits

As a luxury credit card, it provides several golfing benefits and discounts around Singapore and the region.

For the overseas golf benefits, it has to be booked through Visa’s booking portal here .

uob infinite card travel insurance

Personally, I’m not a golfer, so this benefit does not apply to me. Doing a quick search on the green fees for Sentosa Golf Club for a weekday reservation, it easily goes for S$240 per person for members and S$370 per person for visitors. This can be a huge saving if you are able to take advantage of this benefit.

Travel Insurance

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card provides up to US$1,000,000 in personal travel accident insurance for the primary cardholder and a spouse. This includes accidental death or permanent disability that arises due to a covered trip.

In addition, it also provides travel inconvenience coverage such as lost baggage, flight delays and missed connections. This travel inconvenience coverage is quite extensive and contains most of what other common travel insurance has.

uob infinite card travel insurance

To be eligible for travel insurance, you’ll have to charge the airfare of the trip to the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card.

As a rule, we always advocate to not solely rely on a credit card’s travel insurance for travel. It’s always better to purchase a standalone travel insurance package as most credit card insurances are not extensive. However, the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card’s coverage is one of the best we’ve seen out there and can easily stand in for those short trips to nearby countries.

Eligibility

You’ll need to have a minimum annual income of S$120,000 to be eligible for the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card.

This makes the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card a mid-tier credit card when it comes to its eligibility criteria.

The annual fee of S$648 is strictly non-waivable.

For paying the annual fee every year, you’ll receive 25,000 miles. That translates to purchasing the miles at 2.59 cents per mile which is very steep when compared to similar cards. However, we have to take into account other benefits provided to get a holistic view of the card.

My Verdict – Should you get the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card?

It depends. Personally, it’s hard for me to justify owning the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card.

It has a higher annual fee than the other 120k credit cards. With that, it needs to have more benefits that can help me “recoup” the annual fee. For me, the most applicable benefits would be the Grab Gift Vouchers and the very generous lounge access policy.

It’s unlikely I’d take advantage of the other benefits it offers as they do not apply to my usual lifestyle. I do not golf, I do not regularly patronize COMO establishments and I do not frequently dine in hotel restaurants if I’m not staying there.

Ultimately, I believe it depends a lot on your lifestyle and whether these benefits apply to you.

As a comparison, I would think that the Citi Prestige Card offers more bang for the buck within this category of credit cards.

I believe Dragon Pass offers a restaurant programme as well. In fact, at Changi Airport, there’s 7 restaurants on the Dragon Pass app offering set meals (at the expense of 1 visit), compared to 4 restaurants from the Priority Pass app.

UOB Travel Insurance Review 2022: Promo, Covid-19, Complimentary Insurance

moneysmart

UOB travel insurance is something of a hidden gem. When you buy travel insurance, the usual names that come to mind are NTUC ,  MSIG ,  FWD and so on.

But in my opinion, UOB travel insurance offers pretty decent coverage – and I’m saying this as someone who is not a fan of UOB at all. This is a pleasant surprise because local banks usually don’t try very hard with their insurance products.

Let’s take a closer look so you can decide if it’s worth your money.

  • UOB Travel Insurance: Summary
  • UOB Travel Insurance: Coverage
  • UOB Travel Insurance Covid-19 Coverage
  • UOB Travel Insurance Promo
  • UOB Complimentary Travel Insurance
  • UOB Travel Insurance: Extreme Sports
  • UOB Travel Insurance Claims Review
  • Should I buy UOB Travel Insurance?

1. UOB Travel Insurance: Summary

UOB travel insurance is sold under the brand UOB Insure & Travel. It’s actually provided by UOI (United Overseas Insurance) which is UOB’s insurance arm.

This is not to be mixed up with the complimentary travel insurance UOB offers its commercial cardholders. UOB’s InsureTravel is like any other travel insurance provider offering their travel insurance plans for purchase. You don’t have to be an existing UOB customer to buy UOB’s InsureTravel plans.

2. UOB Travel Insurance: Coverage

Two years ago, the UOB travel insurance had only 2 tiers – Essential and Preferred.

Now, UOB InsureTravel comes in 3 tiers:

  • Basic Plan (cheapest, lowest coverage)
  • Essential Plan
  • Preferred Plan (most expensive, highest coverage)

UOB InsureTravel has categorised their insurance premiums into 3 areas for its single-trip plans:

  • Area 1 : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area 2 : Asia countries excluding Middle East countries, Central Asia countries and Russian Federation. Australia and New Zealand included.
  • Area 3 : Anywhere in the world

On the other hand, UOB InsureTravel’s annual plans has categorised their insurance premiums in 2 areas for its annual trip plans:

  • Area 4 : ASEAN, Asia countries excluding Middle East countries, Central Asia countries and Russian Federation. Australia and New Zealand are included under Area 4
  • Area 5 : Anywhere in the world

UOB InsureTravel’s coverage, claim limits, and key benefits are as follows:

UOB InsureTravel’s plans range from $46 to $123. Even when it’s not discounted, UOB InsureTravel is definitely on the more affordable end of travel insurance plans.

We love a good deal any day of the week but does UOB InsureTravel’s coverage really give you a bang for your buck?

In terms of coverage, UOB travel insurance seems pretty legit. Medical coverage is excellent for its price, travel inconvenience benefits are not the best but still decent, and if you’re using a UOB credit card you also get bonus fraud protection. Even with a Basic plan, the claim limits are pretty high.

Comparison of UOB travel insurance prices vs other travel insurance providers:

Looking at the table above, UOB InsureTravel might not seem like the best in class travel insurance product . However, the thing to note is of the four insurance providers listed, only UOB InsureTravel’s policies include Covid-19 coverage.

Covid-19 coverage has to be purchased as an add-on for FWD and Tiq by Etiqa travel insurance policies. Given that what you pay for UOB InsureTravel’s travel insurance plans also includes Covid-19 coverage, you get your money’s worth in coverage.

3. UOB Travel Insurance Covid-19 Coverage

Given how affordable UOB’s InsureTravel policies are, it might come as a surprise to you that its plans already include Covid-19 coverage:

UOB InsureTravel’s Covid-19 coverage is also worthy of singing praises. Even the basic plan’s overseas medical expenses coverage limit is $100,000. In comparison, FWD’s Covid-19 coverage will set you back by an additional $20.60-$34.04 for $200,000 in overseas medical expenses.

Given just how pocket-friendly UOB InsureTravel plans are, upgrading to the Preferred plan is still cost competitive with other insurance providers who offer Covid-19 coverage as an add-on.

4. UOB Travel Insurance Promo

We’ve mentioned a fair bit about how affordable and price competitive UOB InsureTravel’s plans are. I don’t know about you, but I really hate buying stuff at full price, especially when I just know there’s going to be a sale just around the corner.

UOB travel insurance is kind of like that. When there’s a promotion, UOB travel insurance can be downright cheap, making it one of the best prices you can get in Singapore. Currently, there’s an ongoing promotion of 30% off on single-trip plans and 10% off on annual plans .

Here are the UOB InsureTravel prices after the 30% discount:

After discount, UOB’s InsureTravel policies certainly give you the best value for money especially considering that it also includes Covid-19 coverage.

You can keep tabs on the latest promotions on the  UOB travel insurance page.

5. UOB Complimentary Travel Insurance

If you’re a UOB cardholder, you can qualify for UOB’s complimentary travel insurance if you charge the entire fare of your air ticket to any of the following cards:

  • UOB One Credit Card
  • UOB EVOL Card
  • UOB Absolute Cashback American Express Card
  • UOB Visa Signature
  • UOB PRVI Miles American Express
  • UOB PRVI Miles World Mastercard
  • UOB PRVI Miles Visa
  • KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card

Who does love free things? But as the old adage goes, there are no free lunches in the world. The UOB complimentary travel insurance coverage is extremely limited compared to the normal (paid) UOB travel insurance. It’s coverage is limited to the following:

  • Personal Accident coverage of $500,000
  • Emergency Medical Assistance, Evacuation & Repatriation coverage up to S$50,000 due to an accident or illness (including due to COVID-19 with effect from 1 April 2022)

UOB’s complimentary travel insurance coverage is incredibly bare bones. You’d definitely need to purchase your own travel insurance even if you are a UOB cardholder and qualify for the complimentary coverage.

Plus, there’s the added trouble of having to sign-up online to qualify for the complimentary travel insurance.

6. UOB Travel Insurance: Extreme Sports Outdoor Adventure

As we’ve seen in the sections above, the UOB travel insurance is actually legit.

However, UOB isn’t the most lenient of insurers when it comes to adventure activities, so UOB travel insurance is not for thrill-seekers who really want to test fate.

Here’s a list of outdoor activities that are covered, taken from the  UOI policy wording document which is rather hidden from view. The notable exceptions are activities in which you’re airborne – bungee jumping, skydiving and so on.

If you’re an adventure junkie planning to chase an adrenaline rush while you’re on holiday, the UOB InsureTravel plans are definitely limited in its extreme sports and outdoor adventure coverage. D efinitely consider DirectAsia’s Extreme Sports travel insurance rider as an add-on to your UOB InsureTravel plan. It helps that UOB InsureTravel policies are wallet-friendly to begin with.

7. UOB Travel Insurance Claims Review

UOB travel insurance’s cumbersome claims process that seems to be stuck in time might just be my least favourite thing about UOB InsureTravel. To submit your claim, you have to:

UOB travel insurance claims: Download the claim form from the UOB travel insurance page and email the completed form with supporting documents and receipts. Successful claims will then be credited to your account or the cheque will be sent to you via mail.

The inconvenience aside, UOB does have a 24-hour emergency hotline to tend to your queries anytime of any day. The details are as follows:

Emergency assistance hotline: +65 6222 7737

While there isn’t much fodder online about UOB travel insurance’s claims process, we did find one customer review being less than enthused about a full voicemail box. However, we’d take it with a pinch of salt given that it dates all the way back to 2013.

8. Should I buy UOB travel insurance?

UOB InsureTravel’s travel insurance is one of the most bang-for-buck ones out there – even the mid-tier Essential plan has excellent coverage.

It doesn’t make sense to overpay for your travel insurance unless you’re embarking on a high-stakes trip, like a thrill-seeking adventure. If you have an itinerary that’s heavy on extreme sports and outdoor adventure, you will definitely want to get an add-on that is more niche since UOB InsureTravel’s coverage in that category is greatly limited.

Overall, UOB travel insurance offers very good travel insurance benefits all around, from medical coverage to travel inconveniences that may arise from Covid-19. It’s an added plus that unlike other insurance providers, UOB’s InsureTravel travel insurance plans are inclusive of Covid-19 coverage.

The UOB InsureTravel policy also differentiates itself from other providers with additional benefits that are not common practice. For instance, UOB’s InsureTravel plans extend coverage to compassionate visits by a friend or family member.

On top of that, if you’re a UOB cardholder, you also enjoy the following exclusive benefit:

Upgraded: Breaking Down the Enhanced Card Benefits of the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card

This article is brought to you by UOB Cards.

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card , the bank’s premium credit card, has recently undergone some enhancements, bringing more value to cardmembers. It now comes with improved overseas earn rates and an array of enhanced travel benefits.

Let’s have a closer look at what it has to offer and how cardmembers can make the most of this card and enjoy exceptional travel and fine dining experiences.

Table of contents

Receive strong, uncapped earn rates of 1.4 miles per dollar on local (SGD) spend and 2.4 miles per dollar (previously 2 mpd) on foreign currency spend.

Take note that Miles are awarded as UNI$, and 1 UNI$ is equivalent to 2 miles.

Earn Miles on typically-excluded transactions

Education and Hospital transactions are excluded from earning miles/points/cashback from most Singapore cards. But not this one!

Click here to view the list of exclusions in the terms and conditions.

Free Conversion to Miles

Cardmembers get to enjoy unlimited free conversion of UNI$ to miles in the following frequent flyer programs:

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Cathay pacific asia miles.

This is a fantastic benefit, as most banks charge at least S$25 per conversion.

UNI$ can be converted in blocks of 5,000 UNI$ (10,000 miles).

Convert UNI$ earned on other UOB Cards for free too

As UNI$ earned across all UOB Cards are pooled together, cardmembers of the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card can convert UNI$ earned on other UOB Cards for free too.

This benefit makes other great UOB Cards like the UOB Lady’s Card and UOB Preferred Platinum Card even better !

Miles Expiry

UNI$ expire 2 years after they are earned. As cardmembers are entitled to free unlimited conversions , I recommend converting them to a frequent flyer program close to the expiry date , if you are not ready to redeem them. This would extend your miles’ validity to at least 5 years!

Here are the miles expiry terms of both frequent flyer programs:

1 A one-time extension of 6/12 months is allowed, with a fee . 2 Asia Miles do not expire, as long as a minimum of 1 mile is earned, converted or redeemed at least once every 18 months.

Complimentary Airport Lounge Access

One of the notable enhancements is that cardmembers can now enjoy unlimited airport lounge access (via DragonPass ) at over 1,300 lounges worldwide, plus the added perk of bringing along a guest. This is a significant improvement from the previous benefit, which only allowed access four times a year.

Having airport lounge access can greatly improve your pre-boarding experiences, especially when there is a lengthy transit period before the connecting flight.

To register for this privilege, simply download the Airport Companion App (available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store) and sign up for the programme.

To access a participating airport lounge , simply present your DragonPass membership on the App, along with a same-day boarding pass. It does not matter which airline or cabin class you are flying in!

It also covers travel inconveniences like flight delays and loss of luggage.

📝 Travel Insurance Terms and Conditions

Here’s a breakdown of the sign-up bonus:

📝 Sign-Up Bonus Terms and Conditions

How Fast can you Accumulate Miles?

As there is no minimum spending required, with an uncapped earn rate, cardmembers can expect to accumulate miles consistently, no matter how much is spent in a particular month.

Here’s an example of how much miles a cardmember can accumulate in 6 months:

*As a reminder, transactions in SGD earns 1.4 miles per dollar spent, while those in foreign currency are rewarded with 2.4 miles per dollar spent.

Best Ways to Redeem Miles from UOB Cards

After conversion from UNI$, cardmembers can redeem miles from Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles for flights to almost any region in the world, even on partner airlines like Japan Airlines, Finnair, ANA, Turkish Airlines and SWISS.

However, because of the low amount of miles required to travel to/from the following cities, I see these “sweet spots” as some of the best ways to redeem miles earned from UOB cards. In other words, you can’t go wrong with any of these high-value redemptions!

Singapore Airlines publishes an award chart that shows the amount of miles required for travel to/from each region.

Here are some of the best ways to redeem your KrisFlyer miles (on Singapore Airlines, at Saver rates):

Key points to note about KrisFlyer miles:

  • KrisFlyer miles can be redeemed at “Saver” or “Advantage” rates (as shown in the award chart ). Aim to redeem your miles at the Saver rate for better value.
  • Around the middle of every month, Singapore Airlines shares a list of last-minute destinations for you to redeem KrisFlyer miles at a 30% discount.

uob infinite card travel insurance

Miles earned from UOB cards can be converted to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles too, occasionally, with a bonus of 10% to 20% !

Here are some of the best ways to redeem your Asia Miles:

Eligibility and Fees

As a premium card, the UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card has a higher minimum annual income requirement of S$120,000 (previously S$150,000).

The card’s annual membership fee is S$648 (inclusive of 8% GST). Cardmembers can also apply for a supplementary card for a loved one, which will be free for life. Subsequent supplementary cards come with an annual fee of S$290.69 (inclusive of 8% GST).

Is the annual fee worth it?

The annual fee may sound steep, but to me, it is well-justified, considering the generous sign-up bonus (up to 80,000 miles and S$200 worth of Grab vouchers) for the first year.

Renewing the card membership for subsequent years also comes with 25,000 miles, plus 15,000 additional miles upon spending a minimum of S$100,000 in a membership year (total 40,000 miles).

Other great benefits like unlimited airport lounge access for you and your partner, complimentary S$10 worth of GrabGifts vouchers every month (S$120 annually) and dining benefits further improves the value proposition!

Bottom Line

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal Card has undergone significant enhancements, providing cardmembers with a strong local (SGD) earn rate of 1.4 miles per dollar and an enhanced foreign currency earn rate of 2.4 miles per dollar.

Travel and dining benefits of this premium card have been enhanced too, as cardmembers now get unlimited airport lounge visits (+1 guest), up to 50%-off dining bills at selected fine dining restaurants in Singapore and the valuable concierge service, among others.

Visa Infinite: Everything you need to know, from rental car perks to lounge access

I f you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , United Club℠ Infinite Card or the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite® Card , you may have noticed that it carries " Visa Infinite " branding.

Since only a few cards in the U.S. are Visa Infinite products, we don't blame you if you're a bit clueless as to what this designation entails. In addition to the cards mentioned, there aren't many other Visa Infinite cards that are easy to obtain.

We'll outline the perks of the Visa Infinite program below, but the first thing to know is that Visa Infinite cards are a step up from the more common Visa Signature designation found on cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

As we review the benefits, remember these are the possible perks available through the Visa Infinite program. Specific issuers can tweak or exclude certain ones, as you'll see with the variation in lounge access benefits.

The information for the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Global entry application fee credit.

This Visa Infinite program will reimburse you for the $100 fee when you apply for Global Entry . While this program is worth signing up for to breeze through immigration, several other premium travel rewards cards also offer a Global Entry fee reimbursement , so this shouldn't factor too heavily in your decision to get a Visa Infinite card.

Car rental privileges

Cardholders get special discounts at car rental providers such as Avis , National and Hertz and are eligible for various VIP amenities. The Visa Infinite program offers primary car rental insurance (more on that later in the post), so using an eligible card could be a great choice for renting a set of wheels.

Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection

When you book a hotel stay with a Visa Infinite card, you'll enjoy perks such as an automatic room upgrade on arrival (when available), free Wi-Fi and complimentary continental breakfast. Your Visa Infinite card will get you all the benefits available to Visa Signature cardholders, plus an extra amenity at over 200 locations.

Note that the extra amenity you receive will vary by location. If you're looking for a particular one, it's a good idea to verify what amenity you'll receive before booking.

Visa Infinite Concierge

Like most premium card programs, the Visa Infinite program includes a dedicated concierge service that can assist with travel and dining arrangements, shopping, access to exclusive events and more. You can expect great service and assistance with almost whatever outing you plan. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year, and can be used domestically or abroad.

Priority Pass lounge access

Having a credit card with airport lounge access can be a game changer, and Priority Pass is the biggest airport lounge network with more than 1,500 locations worldwide. The exact lounge access privileges you'll get vary depending on the card.

For example, the Sapphire Reserve comes with a full Priority Pass Select membership , which gets the cardholder and up to two guests unlimited lounge visits. On the other hand, the Altitude Reserve card comes with eight Priority Pass lounge visits per year. Each person who visits, whether they're a guest or the primary cardholder, will use up one of these eight passes, so plan accordingly.

Airline incidentals statement credit

With your Visa Infinite card, you may enjoy rebates for certain expenses associated with your flight. Examples include checked luggage charges and inflight food purchases. This benefit isn't included on all Visa Infinite cards, so check your particular card's terms and benefits. For example, the Sapphire Reserve offers an up to $300 travel credit and airline incidental fees are included under eligible charges.

Travel and lifestyle protections

Primary rental car insurance.

Through Visa Infinite, you can get primary coverage* for up to $75,000 due to damage (caused by collision or theft) to a rental car. Visa Infinite cards aren't the only options to offer this coverage — the Chase Sapphire Preferred and a few others do as well — but this is a great perk to have since you won't need to file a claim with your own insurance company in the event of an accident or theft.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance

Visa Infinite cards offer trip cancellation and interruption insurance.** This includes reimbursement of up to $2,000 per insured trip for nonrefundable expenses when you cancel a trip for a covered reason or when your trip is interrupted or delayed for a covered reason.

There's a full list of "covered reasons," but if you're suffering from a serious illness or injury, you can expect this benefit to be offered. In addition, Visa Infinite provides trip delay insurance.*** You'll get coverage for expenses (up to $500 per day) when a purchased trip is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay.

Lost luggage reimbursement

Yet another travel protection Visa Infinite cardholders enjoy is lost luggage reimbursement.*** If your checked or carry-on baggage is lost or stolen on a common carrier, the program will reimburse you up to $3,000 (up to $2,000 for New York residents) per covered trip.

You're eligible for this coverage when you pay for at least a portion of the travel with your Visa Infinite card or with the rewards associated with the card. Having lost luggage protection is a great way to relieve stress during a trip. It's frustrating when an airline loses your luggage, but you can at least get some compensation with the right protection.

Extended warranty, purchase protection and return protection

When you purchase a product with a warranty of three years or less, you'll get an extra year of coverage*** for up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per cardholder. This isn't the only coverage option out there; for more options, take a look at our list of the best cards with extended warranty protection .

If an item is stolen or damaged within 90 days from the purchase date — and you purchased it with a Visa Infinite Card — you'll be covered for up to $10,000 per claim (up to $50,000 per cardholder). With purchase protection coverage,*** you can either be reimbursed, have the item repaired or get a replacement.

In addition to purchase protection that covers you in the event of theft or damage, the Visa Infinite program offers return protection*** coverage of up to $300 per item and $1,000 per year when you're unhappy with a product and the retailer won't accept a return. To be eligible, you must pay for the purchase with your Visa Infinite card and file a claim within 90 days of the purchase date.

Other protections that may be included with your Visa Infinite card include cellphone protection, emergency evacuation, hotel theft protection and price protection. Check the benefits of your specific Visa Infinite card to find out if it offers these protections.

Bottom line

Like other premium credit card programs, Visa Infinite offers a nice array of benefits for your rewards credit card .

The airport lounge access and primary car rental insurance can certainly come in handy. Other perks like car rental discounts and special treatment at hotels aren't unique to the program, but they can absolutely add to the value you get from your card — not a bad thing if you're paying $550 a year for the Chase Sapphire Reserve .

Though the $599 fee is high, cardholders have access to many travel-enhancing benefits including complete travel insurance (medical, flight cancellation, baggage, etc.) and up to 28 days of auto rental collision coverage. Cardholders that spend $25,000 annually can purchase a companion pass for their travel partner starting at $99. Perks like these make the higher than average annual fee worth the cost.

  • Each dollar spent earns 2 points on Air Canada specific purchases, 1.5 points on gas, dining, travel and grocery purchases and 1.25 points on all other purchases.
  • Redeem points for vacations, merchandise, gift cards, hotels and activities.
  • Earn double the Aeroplan points by purchasing items with your card and presenting your Aeroplan member number to Aeroplan partner brands—or online through the Aeroplan eStore.

Earning rewards

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card has robust earning potential with Air Canada direct purchases earning 2 points per dollar; gas, dining, groceries and travel purchases earning 1.5 points; and all other purchases earning 1.25 points per dollar. Compared to other Aeroplan cards, users can expect to earn points at a much faster rate as few other cards have staple purchases (for example, groceries ) at a mid-tier earn rate.

Keep in mind that there is a purchasing cap of $100,000 annually across all categories. Once that limit is reached, all purchases will only earn 1.25 points. Still, a solid base rate.

Plus, there are ways to earn even more points even faster by adding up to three additional cardholders without paying an annual fee. They may receive many of the same benefits you will as the primary cardholder, including purchase security and extended warranty protection, visa zero liability, travel medical insurance, trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance, delayed and lost baggage insurance, mobile device insurance, hotel/motel burglary insurance and even a TD Auto Club Membership. You can also earn extra points at a rate of 1.25 per dollar by setting up recurring bill payments.

If you really want to see how many points you can earn in the first year, TD helps you out with a points calculator where you can use a slider to figure out how much you spend annually in the various purchase categories with accelerated earn rates each month on top of the welcome bonus of 20,000 provided you meet all the spending requirements.

uob infinite card travel insurance

In addition to rewards, cardholders will earn 1,000 Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and one Status Qualifying Segment (SQS) for every $5,000 charged to the card in net purchases made by the primary or additional cardholders, which earns the primary cardholder additional benefits on Air Canada flights when they reach Elite Status.

Redeeming Rewards

Cardholders can redeem their points on the Air Canada or Aeroplan websites. Options for redemption include flights, flight upgrades, hotels , car rentals, vacation packages or merchandise. Users can also donate their points to a charity of their choice.

The Aeroplan program in general offers decent flexibility when it comes to redeeming points, since users can also use a combination of points and cash.

It is worth noting that Aeroplan points do not necessarily have a fixed dollar value when redeeming them for flights. The value of your points for a flight booking depends on multiple factors such as market value, distance and demand. Cardholders looking to make strategic redemption choices will need to pull out a calculator—for better or worse.

Your points can take you many different places. Air Canada will fly you to over 200 destinations and to over 1,300, together with over 30 airline partners. The Aeroplan homepage also has a points predictor tool where you can see exactly what your points will earn you. Plus, if you’re the primary cardholder, it will take fewer Aeroplan points to get to your destination when you book through aircanada.com.

Rewards Potential

With a $599 annual fee—one of the highest on the Aeroplan card market—one would expect high rewards potential. Based on average Canadian spending, Forbes Advisor estimates cardholders earning a total of $377.71 after subtracting the annual fee. Compared to lower-cost cards, such as the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum card with an approximate return of $360.80, cardholders should not expect this credit card to have the highest net earning potential among competitors. That said, it’s based on average annual spending, so big spenders might find more rewards value overall.

However, though the card may have moderate rewards potential, its extra benefits, such as travel insurance and priority perks, solidify its place as a high-value card to have for Canadian flyers.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege vs. American Express Aeroplan Card

Both of these cards are travel-specific cards and carry similar earning potential: both cards earn two times the points on Air Canada purchases and 1.5 points per dollar for dining. Visa’s card comes ahead in terms of earnings, as its lowest base rate is 1.25 points compared to Amex’s 1 point.

Conversely, the American Express Aeroplan Card® carries a much lower annual fee of $120—while still offering various types of travel insurance. However, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege comes with more robust coverage, making the higher annual fee an investment with solid returns—so long as they are utilized.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege vs. CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card

As both of these cards come with identical benefits through the Visa Infinite Privilege program, this comparison comes down to the wire. Both cards carry a high $599 annual fee, but CIBC’s can have $139 of it rebated every year—so long as you open a CIBC Smart Plus Account.

Both cards have identical earning potential across tiers and categories (e.g. both offer 1.5 points for grocery spending), but TD’s Visa card comes with a higher welcome bonus amount. New customers can earn up to 85,000 Aeroplan points† in the first year. CIBC on the other hand, is currently offering up to 80,000 Aeroplan points in the first year.

Taking into account the fact that both have identical earnings but dissimilar welcome offers, rebate options and that TD’s equivalent has less stringent credit rating requirements, we think TD’s offering comes out slightly ahead.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege vs. TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite* card is TD’s travel card for those that don’t meet the stringent income requirements for the Visa Infinite Privilege. It comes with a much lower fee of $139 per year, but has limited earning potential: the top-tier earnings are 1.5 points per dollar compared to 2, and a base rate of 1 points per dollar compared to 1.25. Moreover, the lower-tier card carries less travel benefits coverage (for example, $2 million medical insurance vs. $5 million). Another major difference is the lack of worldwide companion pass for $99 and up—that’s savings TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite cardholders are missing out on.

Setting aside the travel coverage and other benefits, if you’re simply looking for a card with a high net-earning potential without bells and whistles, TD’s Aeroplan Visa Infinite card is a good match.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With rewards, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, rewards rates and categories, fees, welcome bonuses and other benefits and features. Keep in mind, what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

TD’s premium Visa travel card comes with substantial travel benefits for frequent flyers, but at a steep price. Its earning potential is high compared to competitors, but the price tag warrants use of the card’s additional benefits (e.g. travel insurance, companion pass) to increase its rate of return relative to costs. Consumers looking to earn Aeroplan points at a similar rate without the extra bells and whistles that accompany a high fee, will find other less-expensive cards more useful.

Which credit cards have the smallest miles conversion blocks?

Aaron Wong

From 1 mile to 10,000 miles, the minimum conversion blocks for Singapore credit cards differ greatly. Here's how to make sense of it.

Unless you’re spending on an airline cobrand card like the AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend or KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card, you’re technically earning bank points , not airline miles.

Therefore, you’ll need to convert your points into miles before redeeming them, which then raises the question: how many must you convert at one time? This is known as the minimum conversion block.

How does the minimum conversion block vary by bank?

The minimum conversion block starts from as little as 1 mile and goes as high as 10,000 miles.

Don’t assume a bank applies the same policy across all its cards! Some banks have multiple points currencies, each with its own minimum conversion blocks. For example:

  • OCBC Rewards/Premier Visa Infinite Cardholders transfer OCBC$ in minimum blocks of 25,000 points (10,000 miles)
  • OCBC 90°N Cardholders transfer 90 ° N Miles in minimum blocks of 1,000 points (1,000 miles)
  • OCBC VOYAGE Cardholders transfer VOYAGE Miles in minimum blocks of 1 point (1 mile)

Even if the points currency shares a common name, the minimum conversion block may vary depending on card:

  • Standard Chartered Visa Infinite and Journey Cardholders transfer SC Rewards Points in minimum blocks of 25,000 points (10,000 miles)
  • All other Standard Chartered cardholders transfer SC Rewards Points in minimum blocks of 34,500 points (10,000 miles)
  • AMEX Platinum Charge and Centurion Cardholders transfer Membership Rewards Points in minimum blocks of 400 points (250 miles)
  • All other AMEX cardholders transfer Membership Rewards Points in minimum blocks of 450 points (250 miles)

I’ve also added a green label indicating whether points are pooled. Points pooling means the points earned on different cards within the same bank can be combined and redeemed at one go, and mitigates the effect of a larger conversion block.

For example, DBS has a minimum conversion block of 10,000 miles, and pools points. If I have 5,000 miles on my DBS Altitude AMEX and 5,000 miles on my DBS Vantage, I can redeem one block of 10,000 miles.

In contrast, Citibank has a minimum conversion block of 10,000 miles, but does not pool points. If I have 5,000 miles on the Citi Rewards Mastercard and 5,000 miles on the Citi Rewards Visa, I cannot transfer anything until I earn a further 5,000 miles on each card.

Also note the unique arrangement that HSBC has. While you need to convert a minimum of 10,000 miles, the subsequent conversion block after that is just 2 miles. For instance, you could convert 10,496 miles or 30,338 miles if you were so inclined. This means that so long as you have at least 10,000 miles in your account, you can cash out your entire balance with almost nothing leftover.

Why do smaller conversion blocks matter?

While most banks have gone with 10,000 miles as their default minimum conversion block, smaller conversion blocks are much more customer-friendly.

Maintain flexibility

Most banks offer conversions to multiple frequent flyer programmes, and a small conversion block enables you to transfer just the number of miles you need, keeping the rest of your points for transfers to other programmes as needed.

Maximise validity

Your points have “two validities”: one on the bank side, and one on the airline side.

For example, AMEX Membership Rewards points never expire. Once they’re converted into KrisFlyer miles, however, they expire in three years. UOB UNI$ expire in two years, but if you max out their life before transferring them to KrisFlyer, you get a total of five years.

Therefore, it makes sense to keep points on the bank side until they’re needed, and smaller conversion blocks help with that.

Avoid orphan points

In the event you need to cash out your points and close your card account, smaller minimum conversion blocks help reduce orphan points.

For example, suppose John spends S$10,000 each on the Citi PremierMiles Card and OCBC 90°N Mastercard. At an earn rate of 1.2 mpd, he will have:

  • 12,000 Citi Miles
  • 12,000 90°N miles

Now suppose he wants to close both cards. Since the minimum conversion block for Citibank is 10,000 Citi Miles, he’ll have 2,000 Citi Miles leftover (known as orphan points) which can only be spent for vouchers or cash rebates at a rather poor rate. But since the minimum conversion block for OCBC is 1,000 Travel$, he can cash out his entire balance with nothing leftover.

Is there any way to reduce conversion blocks?

Auto-conversion programmes.

DBS and UOB offer auto-conversion programmes that automatically convert points to miles, with a smaller minimum conversion block

  • DBS’s programme costs S$43.60 per year and is available to DBS Insignia, Treasures Black Elite and Altitude cardholders. The minimum conversion block is reduced to 500 DBS Points (1,000 miles)
  • UOB’s programme costs S$50 per year and is available to all UNI$-earning cards. The minimum conversion block is reduced to 2,500 UNI$ (5,000 miles)

Reducing conversion blocks via Kris+

Kris+ supports instant transfers from Citi Miles & ThankYou points, DBS Points and UOB UNI$ to KrisPay miles, which can then be instantly converted into KrisFlyer miles at a 1:1 ratio.

With Kris+, the minimum transfer block is reduced to as low as 200 miles, as shown below.

Here’s the catch: there’s a 15% haircut  compared to the number of miles you’d receive via the bank’s transfer portal (e.g. 100 DBS Points is normally worth 200 miles via the DBS Rewards portal, but only 170 miles via Kris+).

On the plus side, you get to avoid the bank’s usual S$27 transfer fee. Assuming you value a mile at 1.5 cents, a S$27 transfer fee would be equivalent to ~1,800 miles,  which given a 15% haircut means your indifference point is roughly around the 12,000 miles mark. If your miles account just needs a small top-up, it might make sense to take this route instead.

Other ways of doing small top-ups

If you just need a small top-off your KrisFlyer account, there are other alternatives besides transferring credit card points, such as spending with a Kris+ merchant or transferring CapitaStars, GrabRewards points or Linkpoints.

For the full details, refer to this post.

Instant and quick ways to top-up a KrisFlyer miles balance

In an ideal world, conversion blocks would be in the hundreds of miles, if not less. But unfortunately, 10,000 miles is where most of the market has settled, though there’s noticeable exceptions for American Express, OCBC and HSBC (where the conversion block is just 2 miles after the first 10,000 miles block).

All things equal, I’d try to earn points with banks that have smaller conversion blocks, just to minimise the issue of orphan miles and keep my flexibility.

Voyage miles silent devaluation

off topic but i’d think miles chasers ought to know: how voyage miles have changed now in that it is no longer full availability, am finding that a lot of the first class flights that are available directly from SQ website are not showing up on the travelwithOCBC portal. (try first class flights to NRT or SYD in March 2023)

Quite important to consider as OCBC used to market heavily on how it doesn’t need awards availability but now there is a bucket that is seemingly decreasing in availability.

Aaron Wong

Thanks for the heads up. Curious, did you try calling voyage concierge to see if they see different stuff? Per my understanding travel with ocbc and voyage concierge have 2 diff systems but I could be wrong

True they are different providers and are potentially drawing from different buckets. I have ever had Voyage Concierge book tickets which were not available on TravelwithOCBC and also vice versa bought tickets on TravelwithOCBC which Voyage Concierge insisted flight not available. In this specific case I had not asked concierge as I have not firmed up my travel plans yet.

However I find it quite disconcerting that while ample first class flights are available direct, the travel portal is returning no results.
