#1 THING TO DO
Take a Classic Car Tour
Get to see Varadero in style. From the back seat of a gorgeous classic car Cruise the Peninsular, See the Beaches, and Stop for Cocktails.
Varadero had its first mention in written history in 1555 when it was first used as a dry dock – and that’s where the name “Varadero” comes from, it’s the Spanish for dry dock. The Hicacos peninsular was at that time home to salt mines, which supplied most of the Spanish American fleet at the time. The mines closed in 1961. Varadero was only founded as a city in 1887 when families from the nearby city of Cardenas receive permission to build holiday homes in what is now the area between 42 nd and 48 th Street in Varadero.
Tourism began to grow in the 1930s when an American millionaire built his estate on the peninsular – it’s now the Maison Xanadu and one of our recommended places to visit. Following the Cuban Revolution, many of the mansions that had been built were acquired by the Cuban Government and turned into museums. During the 1960s, 70s, and 80s Varadero was transformed into a cultural center and it wasn’t until the 1990s that the mostly four and five-star hotels began to be built.
History lesson over, here are the best things to do in Varadero.

So let’s now look at the best things to do in Varadero, then you can arrange how long you want to spend here – or if you’re staying in Varadero what you’re going to do with your time!
1. The number one thing to do in Varadero – Go to the Beach
The majority of visitors to Varadero come here for the stunning white sand beaches and the more than 50 all-inclusive hotels that line this part of the coastline. Varadero beaches are the most well-known in Cuba and the Caribbean. The beaches are of glorious fine white sand and the turquoise-blue sea makes for a stunning scene. These beaches and stunning scenes make Varadero one of the top winter sunshine destinations around the world. The beach at Varadero stretches for 13 miles (22 kilometers) and you walk it in its entirety. You’ll find public beach access points amongst the bars and cafes. If you’re staying at one of the resorts of a private casa particular then you’ll likely be backing straight onto the beach, so enjoy!
Some parts of the beach are best for sunbathing, some for swimming, some for snorkelling and some for other water sports.

Free walking tours are just that. Free. You’ll simply tip your guide at the end of the tour to show your appreciation (and remember that this is their income). You don’t pay a cent other than the tip.
This free Varadero walking tour will explore the old rum store (and you’ll learn how its made here in Cuba), and you’ll visit Parque Josone, built around a neoclassical mansion. There’s much to explore on this free walking tour of Varadero – you’ll learn about the history of the area and the famous people who’ve explored and stayed here.
You’ll also get to visit the Casa del Tabaco, learn about Cuban cigars, and find the best place in Varadero to get a photo of the glorious beaches here.
3. Have a resort day In Varadero
If you’re not staying at a resort or all-inclusive hotel with beach and pool access in Varadero, then you’ll likely be able to get a day rate with them. Inquire either on the beach, or at the lobby to get a day rate that includes sun umbrellas, pool access, access to any private parts of the beach, sun loungers, and even drinks and meals.
4. Take a trip in a classic car in Varadero
The two best places to take a classic car ride in Cuba are Havana and Varadero. These cars are originals, they’re probably older than most of us. And taking a ride in a classic car really is an iconic thing to do in Cuba . You’ll find so many classic American cars in Cuba because of the trade restrictions placed on the country following the Cuban revolution. It was way too expensive to import cars from anywhere else other than the USA and they’d banned exports to Cuba. And so it became necessary to fix up the older cars. So these classic cars you see driving around the streets of Havana and other cities are there not just for tourists, but they’re a way of life and a necessity. And riding in them is absolutely magical.
You can book a Varadero Classic Car Trip here.
The majority of the classic cars that have been restored and are used for class car tours in Havana and Varadero, as this is where the majority of the tourists are. You may find some classic cars in Trinidad, Cienfuegos , and Santiago de Cuba , but there tend to be fewer of them and they’re not in as good a condition. So seize the opportunity while you can! Book it now!
You can wave down a classic car in the street. Or speak to the concierge or doorman at your hotel or resort. A ride from any of the resorts in Varadero to downtown will cost around US$15. For a bit of a tour with advice on the best places to eat and drink maybe US$20-US$30. Be sure to agree on the price before you get in the car. Or pre-book and pre-pay on a card here. And, believe me, it’s well worth it!
5. Take a Guided Tour of Varadero
Sometimes the best way to see a place is to get a local to take you to all the important stops and give you advice for where else you should visit. And that’s exactly what this guided tour of Varadero does. You can arrange it for a time of your liking and you’ll be collected from your hotel or resort in Varadero and dropped off there at the end of the tour unless you want to be dropped elsewhere.
First of all, you’ll get an overview of Varadero on a bus tour – when you’ll see the old Spanish watchtower, the Church of Santa Elvira, a street full of craft stalls, and Josone Park. Then you’ll stop at the Casa del Ron, or the House of Rum, to discuss this famous Cuban product. (We recommend visiting it later by yourself for tastings and purchases). But don’t worry your next stop is La Bodeguita del Medio, a bar decorated with hundreds of photos and signatures of famous personalities. La Bodeguita Del Medio is famed as one of Ernest Hemingway’s drinking haunts! You’ll get an overview of Cuban Cocktails (which we wrote about here) and then you’ll get to taste one too. Once your thirst has been quenched you’ll head for the Xanadú Mansion, a uniquely decorated residence that belonged to the chemist Alfred Irénée Dupont. There are incredible views from the house, which has balconies that are designed to resemble the stern of a ship, and inside there’s an electromechanical organ with 3,000 pipes allowing the music to fill the entire house.
Check out this fabulous guided tour of Varadero – and explore with a local now!
6. Take the Hop-on Hop-Off Bus Tour of Varadero
The hop on hop off double-decker buses in Varadero run a route between the Varadero Marina and Varadero downtown. It’s the cheapest way to get around Varadero, apart from walking as it costs only US$5 a day.
NOTE: You can only pay for this with a credit card.
Kids under 5 travel for free. These buses, often called the Varadero Beach Tour buses run from 0930 until 2100 and have 46 stops linking all the Varadero hotels, shopping areas, marinas, the golf course, the Varadero Dolphinarium, and downtown Varadero. They run every 30 minutes or so and you buy the ticket on the bus.
Here’s the map of stops for the Varadero Beach Tour Bus.
7. Head to Varadero’s Municipal Museum
You’ll find the Museo Municipal located in a typical 1920s colonial beach house. It’s surrounded by balconies and a wooden terrace. The museum is located at Calle 57 and Ave de la Playa, Varadero, Cuba, and has the remains of a two-headed shark and the skeletal remains of one of the first settlers of the island of Cuba. There are also exhibits of the history, art, and archaeology of the area.
8. Take a Cooking Class in Varadero
There’s no better way to experience Cuban culture than by understanding the food of Cuba.
This is a FIVE Star, top-reviewed cooking class , right here in Varadero.
It’s an awesome way to not just get to know the cuisine of Cuba, but also to engage with Cuban locals at the same time. Experiencing Cuban food by learning not just about the food, but also the history of the dish, the person cooking it and how it comes about is a truly enlightening experience. That’s why I think that the best Cuban food you can get is that which you learn about from the ground up, by buying the ingredients, by preparing it, and by cooking it in a Cuban kitchen under the guidance of a local host. And this cooking class in Varadero really is something special.
You’ll get four hours of foodie fun at this cooking class in Varadero. While the tour and cooking class meets in central Varadero, you’ll travel by minibus to Cardenas and take a tour in a horse-drawn carriage and then buy the ingredients for your cooking class. Then you’ll head home where you’ll be taught how to cook Cuban food. There’s a swimming pool at the home, so you’ll get a chance to cool off and relax – and you’ll also learn to make three Cuban cocktails – and, of course, to drink them too! Want to know more? Here are the Varadero cooking class details.
9. Visit the Casa del Ron, Varadero
Part museum with models and an exhibition depicting early rum distilleries and part shop, ok lots of shop, this is a fabulous (no pressure) place to stop off and find out a little more about that Cuban staple, Rum. The House of Rum – Casa del Ron has an excellent collection of both Cuban and Caribbean rums. I can’t promise that you’ll completely understand rum distilling after a visit here, but you’ll have had several tastes and found a great place to buy some rum to enjoy on your holiday.
The Casa del Ron is found at Avenida 1ra, Varadero, Cuba, and is open from 0900 until 1900 every day.
10. Visit La Casa del Habano, Varadero
If you’ve never been to a Cuban cigar store, then you should definitely come to Varadero’s Casa del Habano. This store is filled with cigars (and cigarettes) and pricing is at standard Cuban government prices. Want to know more about Cuban Cigars? My ultimate guide to Cigars from Cuba is here.
The Casa del Habano is located at Cnr 1 & Calle 63, Varadero 42200, Cuba, and is open from 0900 until Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, it is open from 0900 until 2100.
If you want to explore more of Cuba’s products, then this sugar, rum, and cigar tour is a perfect way to get the trifecta all in one day.
11. Like Chocolate? Visit the Casa del Chocolate
Cuba is actually a producer of cacao beans, as it lies at the very edge of ideal growing conditions. A small amount of cacao beans are produced at the far eastern end of the island, in the province of Baracoa. (you can read about Baracoa in my guide here) And these beans are also processed in Cuba too, which is rather rare – going from bean to bar in the same country. And the Casa Del Chocolate here in Varadero is the only restaurant in Cuba that has chocolate on every item on its menu. They don’t use cooking oil, it’s cocoa butter for instance. So here you’ll find hot chocolate, cakes, main courses, and of course, chocolate to take away. The chocolate that they make here is made 100% from Cuban cacao.
The Casa del Chocolate is located at Avenida 1ra, Varadero 42200, Cuba and is open from 1100 until 2000 every day.
12. Visit Parque Josonne in Varadero
The park, which measures about 9 hectares has lots of green areas in the heart of Varadero. There’s also a lake where you can take a boat ride(US$US$0.5 per person per hour) and you’ll find a few restaurants that serve Creole food. The gardens date back to 1940 and take their name from the then owners, José and Onelia Iturrioz. It’s an easy relaxed place to spend an afternoon in Varadero with some shade from the trees.
13. Maison Xanadu, Varadero, or Dupont House
This mansion, the Xanadu Mansion is the clubhouse and hotel of the Varadero Golf Club. It was built in 1930 for the French American millionaire, Alfred Irénée du Pont who was the then chairman of the DuPont Chemical Company. There are seven balconies shaped to look like the stern of a ship and it has been maintained carefully and restored to the 1930s building plans. The mansion and its grounds became a golf club in 1963 following the death of Du Pont. This Cuban National Monument is worthy of a visit in its own right and you don’t need to play golf to visit.
14. Go Golfing in Varadero
However, if you do want to golf, then Varadero is an excellent place to play golf. The Varadero golf club is the only 18-hole, 72-par golf course in Cuba. This course at the Varadero Golf Club was opened in 1999 and was designed by a Canadian, Les Furber. Golf carts are mandatory here and you can rent all the equipment that you need. Some hotels in Varadero (like the Melia complexes) include green fees in their rates, so if you’d like to golf in Varadero, it’s worth taking a look at staying at the right hotel!

The famous Cuban rum is made of fermented sugar cane, and the liquor brand has grown into a worldwide industry since Diego de Velázquez introduced it in the 16th century.
Of course, your visit to the house of rum Varadero will include a tasting of many variations of rum, from the classic dark and light type to chocolate and vanilla-flavored types or other ones you probably have never tasted before!
15. Visit The Varadero Delfinario
Among Varadero’s main tourist attractions is the dolphinarium. My visit to the Varadero Delfinario was actually a lot more interesting and fun than I anticipated.
Located in a mangrove, it is a natural home to the dolphins in the dolphinarium, and as I am not an expert, I consulted someone who is to learn about a healthy environment for dolphins. Which a natural mangrove is.
I don’t know what I expected, but the location and the show were quite impressive in all aspects. I spent an afternoon there and had the honor of getting my first salty dolphin kiss!
The show is held in connection to the feeding twice a day. You see how the trainers interact with the dolphins and their ability to learn things, which is good for their development.
You can also go swimming with the dolphins, so bring your swimsuit if you think that is something for you.
The price for entrance is €20, or €60 if you want to do the swimming as well.
16. Lounge At The Tripadvisor Award-Winning Varadero Beach
The Varadero beach is the name of the beach that runs along Varadero town, or downtown Varadero, practically ten meters from the main street.
You can literally take a swim in between shopping and the city lunch if you would like to.
Varadero Beach was voted the second most beautiful beach in the world in 2019 in TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice, so you don’t need a private resort beach to find white sand perfection here.
Heading here for sunset is one of the most romantic things to do in Varadero (if you travel with the love of your life).
17. Visit Iglesia Santa Elvira
The Iglesia Santa Elvira, built in 1938, is said to be the oldest church in the area. It is very small and peaceful, and it is open for everyone to visit during the day.
It is well known for its distinctive structure on the inside, consisting of stone walls and wooden details.
A horseshoe arch upfront serves as a bell tower with a cross at the top. The details and layout give it a special character, making it a must-see for those interested in history or architecture.
18. Stop By The Galeria Espacio 34
The Galeria Espacio 34 is a mixture of a museum and an art gallery that focuses on unique Cuban designs in art through photographs, paintings, and sculptures in particular.
Previously, this gallery was part of the multi-art center “Casa del la Cultura Los Corales”.
The center is now divided into two parts: a dance academy called ABC Academia Baile en Cuba , and the art gallery Espacio 34.
19. Artecru Art Center In Varadero
Artecru (the acronym of Contemporary Rural and Urban Art in Spanish) is a name and symbol of a place that represents a group of artists on the Cuban art scene.
United by friendship and work, its intention was to become visible through this platform by creating unique pieces of art. This group works in many styles, conducts expositions, creates decorations, and works by charge.
Each artist here has their own style of work, and the artists will show you their visions and help you choose a special piece for you if you decide not to leave empty-handed!
Yes, There Are Day Trips From Varadero!
There are plenty of day trips from Varadero to other destinations available.
Visit the nearby cities of Havana , Trinidad , and Cienfuegos . Explore the beaches and coves along the coast, or take a nature hike through one of the area’s lush national parks.
Day Tours From Varadero To Havana!
Yes, there are tours from Varadero to Havana . No visit to Cuba is complete without spending at least one day in its vibrant capital city.
Stroll the streets of Old Havana, marvel at the colonial-era architecture, taste the famous cocktails, have a classic car tour, and find a rooftop terrace to take in the spectacular view of the city.
There’s also plenty of nightlife to enjoy in Havana, with live music and dancing in the many bars and clubs.
You can book an organized day tour from Varadero to Havana , or book a ticket with the Viazul bus and stay in Havana for a night or two!
Day Trip Trinidad, El Nicho & Cienfuegos
Even if most of your Cuba holiday plan is to stay close to the beach and pools in your all-inclusive resort in Varadero, I might still want to explore some of the best adventures in the region.
For this tour, you’ll start by making your way up to El Nicho , a protected area with a stunning waterfall from the River Habanill in the Topes de Collantes Natural Park.
You can swim in crystal clear pools while parrots are perched in palm trees, and you can also have a traditional Cuban lunch here.
Then, you are off to the historic colonial city of Trinidad , protected by UNESCO, where you can explore the city’s ancient streets and museums.
Lastly, you will visit Cienfuegos, a beautiful coastal city with lots of French influences, where you do the panoramic tour of Punta Gorda, which is an outing spot for the locals.
Also, see the Hotel Jagua, the imposing Palacio del Valle, and José Martí Park.
Experience Vinales Valley
Even from Varadero, you can manage to visit Vinales Valley west of Havana, a lush green UNESCO-protected part of Cuba that is also home to the famous Cuban cigars!
This day of the tour is really long, as there is quite a bit of transport time involved. I have only done the Vinales day trip from Havana, which is a great experience, so I can not review this particular tour.
You get to experience the Mural de la Prehistoria, visit a tobacco farm, sample cigars, and rum, and get a demonstration of how it is done!
Lunch in Vinales Town is on your own, and you will also visit the botanical garden and viewpoint of Los Jazmines before you return to Varadero.
What this tour does not have is a visit to Cueva del Indio and its hidden waterways, which is also stunning. But for a day trip of this magnitude, you still get a lot.
Varadero Town On Hicacos Peninsula
If you stay in Varadero town, you can easily explore the center and heart of the city on foot, where you can still see horse-drawn carriages.
In the city center, you find the Varadero street market, where they sell “anything”, mostly handmade handicrafts and cigars, knitted clothes, and you name it.
When looking for activities, adventures, and other things to do in Varadero, here is what you have to look forward to!
Where To Stay In Varadero
Varadero town has a lot of Casa Particulares for rent that is well within the budget accommodation price range, as well as all the all-inclusive, high-end resort options lying like beads on a chain along the peninsula.
Casa Particulares In Varadero
This is perfect if you want to have a local experience and learn a little about the Cuban way of life.
When looking for authentic places to stay in Varadero, Cuba, you can book beforehand online on sites like Airbnb, Expedia , or Hostelworld, which are all very popular in Cuba.
If you like to be flexible and adventurous, you can also find a place without any problems when you get there.
Although I am very fond of the Casa Particulares in Cuba, I do not hesitate to recommend a couple of nights in lush luxury here if it does not topple your budget.
Resorts In Varadero Cuba
Two great options are the Iberostar Selection Varadero and the Iberostar Selection Bella Vista. Both hotels are on the beachfront and have amazing pool areas and amenities!
The all-inclusive resort life in Varadero really is like meditating for a few days; everything is just done for you, with no need to lift a finger.
You come out on the other end involuntarily smiling with no trace of blue circles anywhere. All-inclusive can be an incredible recharge.
Stunning Beaches In Varadero And Around
Cuba’s coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches, many of which are within easy reach of Varadero.
Mind you, when you are in Varadero, you are right there at the Varadero beach, the public beach that TripAdvisor voted the second most beautiful beach in the world in 2019.
Relax on the sand, swim in the turquoise warm waters, try some popular water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, or take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands.
If you opt for a tour of Trinidad on the southern shores, you can also visit renowned Playa Ancon after exploring the colonial streets in this UNESCO World Heritage Site-protected town!
Nature Parks Around Varadero
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, head to the naturaleza in one of Cuba’s national parks.
The Topes de Collantes Nature Reserve is a particular highlight, offering hiking trails through lush vegetation and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
You might even spot some of the local wildlife, such as the Cuban trogon bird or the endangered Cuban solenodon (a small, furry mammal endemic to mountainous forests in Cuba)!
Restaurants In Varadero Cuba
When it comes to restaurants in Varadero, there is certainly no shortage of options. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a more leisurely dining experience .
One of the most popular restaurants in Varadero is El Paladar , which offers traditional Cuban cuisine, with a casual atmosphere, making it perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.
If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, La Casa del Chef serves creative fusion cuisine from a beautiful setting overlooking the beach. This is an ideal spot for a romantic dinner.
La Gruta restaurant in the beautiful Josene Park, a Varadero ecological park, serves a divine lobster dinner, deliciously draped in garlic sauce and served with rice and a salad.
The lobster dinner costs $20 a plate, and a variety of wines are also reasonably priced. The atmosphere is unique, situated in a cave, which keeps you fresh and comfortable on a hot summer Varadero evening!
You also have the amazing Salsa Suárez Restaurant Bar , Restaurante Bar Atlantida , and high-flying Waco’s Club on an airy rooftop.
Lastly, there is the Varadero 60 , where the staff is welcoming, the decor is quirky, and there is fantastic decor and ambiance. All of these places received standing ovations on TripAdvisor after the pandemic!
These are family-run paladares , privately owned restaurants, and the prices are reasonable. Be sure to try some of the traditional Cuban specialties like ropa vieja (shredded beef) or lechon asado (roasted pork)!
What To Do In Varadero At Night
There’s plenty to do in Varadero at night, from enjoying the local food and drink scene to dancing the night away. For a taste of the local flavor, check out Casa del Ron , as it is also a great spot for sampling some of Cuba’s famous rum!
La Bodeguita del Medio is a must-visit for any fan of mojitos, and if you need something to eat into the night, El Rincon Criollo serves delicious traditional Cuban cuisine.
If you’re in the mood to dance, Club Tropicana is one of the most popular nightspots, where you can dance to salsa, reggaeton, and more. You can also head to Casa de la Musica to listen to some live music and soak up the atmosphere.
There’s also Mango’s Disco , which has a mix of international and Cuban music, and Jazzy Bar , which features live jazz music.
Cafe del Teatro is a great place to people-watch or enjoy a cup of coffee, while El Patio de Jose Maria is perfect for enjoying a few drinks with friends.

Varadero, Cuba
Located on the Hicacos Peninsula along Cuba’s northern coast, the beach town of Varadero is just two hours east of the island’s vibrant capital city of Havana . This long, skinny peninsula juts out into crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a semi-protected extension of nearly 10 miles (18 kilometers) of picture-perfect beaches .
For years, Varadero has been the ultimate resort town in Cuba, easily the most popular and built-up beach destination on the island. Varadero is popular with Cubans and foreigners alike , all here to enjoy the lovely Varadero Beach and the many other attractions and activities the area has to offer.
Despite sections of the beach being overtaken by the numerous resorts in Varadero , Varadero Beach is entirely public. There is more than enough public beach here to enjoy, whether you’re looking for a more lively party spot or a totally quiet corner of sand.
Varadero’s proximity to Havana makes it a popular day-trip destination for a quick escape, though many visitors stick around for an extended beach vacation. You’ll enjoy just as great a beach vacation renting an apartment a few blocks from the beach as you will at a resort, making Varadero a potentially more affordable island vacation than you might be expecting.
No matter what you’re planning to do on your Cuba itinerary , Varadero is well worth a trip. Not only does its location – just a few hours from Havana and Trinidad – make it an accessible destination for visitors, but its beaches alone are worth traveling for.

Varadero Beach
If you’re coming to Varadero, you’re most certainly planning on visiting the beach. Even after visiting some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and around the world, I’m always floored when I step over the dunes and onto the white sands of Varadero Beach.
On the main beachfront road in Varadero (Avenida Primera, which turns into Avenida Playa), there are public beach access points every few blocks amidst restaurants, bars, and cafes. This allows anyone to easily access the water and sand on Varadero Beach.
From our experience, there aren’t any tricks to finding the best spot or any special sections of the beach to visit. Some sections of the beach have more neighboring restaurants and cafes. Other areas are lined with houses and apartments and have a more relaxed vibe. It’s all about what you’re looking for from your beach day.

Things To Do in Varadero Cuba
Beyond just going to the beach, there are plenty of things to do in Varadero. So many, in fact, that we wrote an entire guide to the best things to do in Varadero . Make sure to give that a read before your trip, but we’ve listed some of the absolute highlights below:
1. Visit Varadero Resorts (or, Spend The Night!)
One option for beachgoers looking for more amenities for their beach day is to take advantage of the resort space at some of Varadero’s favorite spots by renting chairs and umbrellas or even getting a day rate with meals included at a resort if you want to use all their resources – including pools.
You can take advantage of a day pass at almost any resort in town. Just walk up to the resort on the beach and inquire. This is a great (relatively inexpensive) way to use a chair for the day and enjoy the hotel amenities, even if you don’t choose to stay there.

2. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving
Varadero Beach is not Cuba’s most well-known dive spot – check out Jardines de la Reina for that! – there is a lot to see under these crystal-clear waters.
Snorkeling and scuba diving excursions are offered by dive shops and tour providers in town. ScubaLibre is a reputable snorkeling and diving company, and they have a variety of excursion types, including a snorkeling excursion to the cave systems nearby – we recommend going with them!
Alternatively, book a catamaran trip to Cayo Blanco , a nearby white-sand cay just off the shore from Varadero. The catamaran excursion includes stops along the way for snorkeling, and you can also snorkel at Cayo Blanco. This is a great way to get in some snorkeling while seeing one of Cuba’s stunning cays all at once.

3. Swim With Dolphins
There are a variety of companies in Varadero that offer swimming with dolphin excursions for those interested in this fun activity! You’ll have several options in Varadero if you’re looking to swim with dolphins, though most travelers head to Varadero’s Delfinario for dolphin shows and to swim with dolphins.
While you won’t probably see dolphins swimming from the beaches of Varadero, the locals know where to find them, and there are a variety of excursions and activities built around this. Some of the catamaran excursions in Varadero also offer additional experience add-ons to swim with dolphins , so if you’re considering both experiences, it may be best to combine them.
4. Ride in a Vintage American Car
Taking a tour in a vintage American car is generally an activity that visitors will save for Havana, but it can be a beautiful way to see Varadero as well. Even if you have already done a similar tour in Havana or plan to, cruising past the water in a vintage convertible is a fantastic way to enjoy Varadero!
You’ll see old cars all around in Varadero as you explore the town and probably will be asked if you want to ride, though you can also book in advance online. Booking in advance is a great way to avoid the annoyance of haggling and will save you from having to bring even more cash to Cuba.
What to Pack for Cuba
Check out our Ultimate Cuba Packing List to help you pack for your trip – we’re sharing exactly what to bring to Cuba and what we never travel without.
5. Visit Cayo Blanco on a Catamaran
Cayo Blanco, a nearby white-sand cay just across the water from Varadero Beach is a favorite day trip from Varadero . Hop on one of the many catamaran trips to Cayo Blanco that depart from the beach for one of the best ways to get out on the water and enjoy sailing during your Varadero stay.
These all-inclusive day trips include lunch and drinks, as well as all of the gear you’ll need for snorkeling and enjoying a day at the beach. Trips can also be combined with opportunities to swim with dolphins if you book ahead.
Note: Cuban citizens aren’t allowed to take part in these catamaran excursions, given regulations about Cubans boarding boats, so if you’re traveling with Cuban friends or family, this isn’t the excursion for you, unfortunately.

6. Visit the Cueva de Ambrosio
Located just a few miles from Varadero, the Cueva de Ambrosio is one of the largest caves of an expansive network of caves running underground along the north of Cuba. Small group cave excursions are popular half-day trips from Varadero .
You’ll be wowed by the stalactites and stalagmites from above and below as you explore the cave. Expecting an incredibly hot weather day during your trip to Varadero? Exploring the cave is a great way to cool off on a hot afternoon and avoid getting burned at the beach.
Where To Eat in Varadero
If you’re not staying in one of Varadero’s all-inclusive resorts and are looking for the best place to eat in Varadero, there are plenty of delicious options in the center of town. Most restaurants are located on the main road running parallel to the beach (Avenida Primera, which also branches out into Avenida Playa), quite easily accessible in this easily walkable area.
However, you’ll also find some great spots a bit further from the beach on the side streets that run perpendicular to the beach. If you want to find something less expensive and more local, any of the side streets branching off from the beachside road will have small eateries scattered with options locals frequent, including some of those we recommend below.
Recommended anywhere in Varadero is, of course, the seafood – you’ll get some fantastic bargains on lobster and fresh fish. Prices pale in comparison to prices back home , and I definitely consider eating seafood among the best things to do in Varadero .
La Vaca Rosada
The rooftop terrace and barbecue at La Vaca Rosada make this restaurant one of our favorites in town. You can’t go wrong with any of the seafood dishes on the menu, and they also have delicious mixed drinks. Easily accessible on a side street off of the beachfront avenue, it’s not as boisterous (or touristy!) as some of Varadero’s other spots… and the food is even better.
La Vaca Rosada | $$ | #102 Calle 21
Long a favorite in Varadero, La Rampa is a cozy, unpretentious restaurant well known for having some of the best lobster in Varadero. The restaurant is small, so arrive early if you don’t want to wait for a table. Or, even better, stop by for lunch or earlier in the afternoon to make a reservation for dinner – the secret is starting to get out about this gem.
La Rampa | $$ | Calle 43 y Avenida Primera
Marisquería Laurent
Beachfront Marisquería Laurent is all about the views, though its menu is nothing to scoff at. Enjoy waterfront views on an expansive dining patio as you dig into big portions of seafood, with fresh grilled fish, lobster, and grilled shrimp and prawns being the stars of the menu.
Marisquería Laurent | $$ – $$$ | Calle 31 y Avenida Playa
Salsa Suarez
Once you’ve eaten your weight in seafood and Cuban dishes in Varadero, head to Salsa Suarez for a great array of international dishes. Pizza, pasta, and even sushi are on the menu here , though of course, you can also opt for some of Varadero’s best seafood if you just can’t get enough. Right in the heart of town, this is one of our favorite places to eat in Varadero for a slightly nicer meal.

Havana vs. Varadero
We often have travelers write us as they debate Havana vs. Varadero on their Cuba itinerary. However, there is no way to compare Havana and Varadero!
Havana is a beautiful and historic city and cultural hub, and one of the most unique and interesting cities in the world. Varadero, on the other hand, is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean . The experiences you’ll have in either of these places are completely different, and recommending one over the other is impossible without knowing what you’re looking for .
If you’re having a hard time deciding what to do on a trip to Cuba, I recommend seeing if your schedule allows for time in both of these places , even if you spend a longer chunk of time in one city and just a day in another. Both Havana and Varadero Beach are destinations you won’t want to miss in Cuba .
While I’ll choose Havana over Varadero every time if I’m forced to choose, Varadero is the best beach trip from Havana, in my opinion . While there are beaches that are closer to Havana , such as the beaches at Playas del Este , Varadero is the nearest beach to Havana which makes the list of the best beaches in Cuba.
