Kasteel van Beersel

The 1310 Kasteel van Beersel is the closest medieval castle to Brussels. From the outside it’s a beauty – the picture-perfect brick towers, rebuilt in 1498, are topped off with 17th-century roofs and rise proudly above a tree-ringed moat. Inside it’s an empty shell; the building was used as a cotton factory in the 19th century.

The castle is handily close to the west Brussels ring motorway (junction 19). By train from Brussels, you'll need to change at Halle, from where services run three times an hour to Beersel station, adjacent to the castle. Halle's interesting historical centre is worth a quick look while you’re in transit.

History of Beersel Castle

Beersel Castle was constructed between 1300 and 1310 by nobleman Godfrey of Hellebeke. Importantly, it served as a defensive stronghold for the Duchy of Brabant. The castle’s design features thick walls, a moat, and three imposing round towers. These elements reflect the military architectural style of the period, emphasizing defense.

Throughout its history, Beersel Castle has witnessed numerous conflicts and sieges. During the Brabant Revolution in the late 18th century, the castle sustained significant damage but was later restored. One notable event occurred in the 15th century when the castle withstood a siege by Duke John IV of Brabant’s troops. Despite the assault, the castle’s robust defenses ensured its survival, solidifying its reputation as an impregnable fortress.

Ownership of the castle changed hands several times over the centuries. It fell into disrepair in the 19th century. However, in the early 20th century, the municipality of Beersel purchased and restored the castle. Restoration efforts aimed to preserve the historical integrity of the castle while making it accessible to the public.

Beersel Castle

visit beersel castle

Beersel Castle, locally known as Kasteel van Beersel, lies next to the village of the same name, in the province of Flemish Brabant in the Flemish region in Belgium.

The Lords of Beersel were first mentioned in the second half of the 12th century. Their castle was probably just a wooden or stone keep on a moated circular motte.

The first Lord of Beersel known by name was a Godfrey of Hellebeek in the early 14th century. He built Beersel Castle which was also an advanced outpost for the defense of the city of Brussels and had to protect the borders of the Duchy of Brabant against the County of Hainaut. In 1356-57 his castle was burned during the War of Succession of the Duchy of Brabant but quickly rebuilt.

In the late 15th century Hendrik III van Wittem was Lord of Beersel. In late 1488, during a revolt of the city of Brussels against the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Van Wittem had chosen the side of the emperor. The people of Brussels then fruitlessly besieged Beersel Castle. They returned in early 1489, led by Philip of Cleves and with heavy artillery. This time, after a siege of a couple of days, the castle fell. The castle was badly damaged; the gate tower, the southern tower and the residential wing were destroyed and its walls were breached. Later Maximilian retaliated; he crushed the revolt and between 1491 and 1508 forced the people of Brussels to rebuilt Beersel Castle. The Van Wittem family stayed Lords of Beersel until 1591.

Around 1700 the castle was still in good state. Later Beersel Castle went to the Dukes of Arenberg who neglected it which led to the castle becoming unoccupied later that century.

In the early 19th century a cotton factory was operated inside the castle walls. Later the castle was abandoned and fell to ruin. It was then visited by the famous French writer Victor Hugo, who lamented its sorry state.

Through marriage the castle had gone from the Arenberg family to the Merode family and in 1928 their descendants offered the castle to the League of Friends of Beersel Castle. They restored the castle. Since 1948 the castle is owned by the Royal Association of Historic Residences and Gardens in Belgium, which has leased it to the municipal authorities of Beersel.

There are now plans for an extensive archaeological excavation and rebuilding of the residential wing.

Beersel Castle can be visited for a small fee. A truly beautiful castle, lots of rooms and staircases to explore. Recommended!

6 Things to Do in Beersel, near Brussels, Belgium

By alison - March 19, 2013 (Updated: May 31, 2018)

Beersel Castle before the renovation works

Beersel Castle before the renovation works (Via Johan Bakker)

I’m always eager to explore a new part of Belgium and when it’s with a local guide, even better. So when a friend offered to show me around her town, Beersel, just outside of Brussels, I was keen to see what she had in store.

I’ll be honest; Beersel wasn’t on my list of exciting places to visit in Belgium. In fact I couldn’t think of one thing to see there. Luckily, my trusty local guide, Marijke, introduced me to six fun things to do in Beersel and the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement.

When I first met Marijke , she was working for De Rand. These days, she’s busy being a stay at home mom, launching her own business and enjoying life in Beersel. Originally from Limburg, Marijke has spent the past few years in her husband’s hometown of Beersel.

Beersel Castle – Kasteel Van Beersel

The first stop on our tour was Beersel’s most famous sight, Beersel Castle . At the moment, the castle, dating from the 1300s, isn’t at its photographic best. It is undergoing extensive renovations which began with the draining of the moat, to repair the foundations.

Beersel Castle under construnction

Hopefully Beersel Castle will soon be restored to its former glory

The round fortress was a defensive base for Brussels and is made up of three watch-towers. It’s an impressive sight and hopefully will soon be fully restored to its former glory.

The castle is famous among Belgian comic strip fans as the setting of the Suske en Wiske comic De schat van Beersel (“The Treasure of Beersel”). It is also home to an annual medieval festival, which Marijke says includes knights jousting, music and food and is great fun for children and adults alike.

Provincial Domain of Huizingen – Provinciedomein Huizingen

The next stop on our tour was the Provincial Domain of Huizingen , and while this may sound like a boring administrative site, it is anything but. Huizingen is a village suburb of the Beersel municipality and the provincial domain is its star attraction.

Castle of Huizingen, Belgium

The lovely Castle of Huizingen.

It is essentially an enormous park and recreation complex built on the former grounds of the Castle of Huizingen. This grand chateau is now home to a fine-dining restaurant and brasserie and I’m told the terrace is a great place to spend a warm summer afternoon. (I plan to check this out for myself later this year!)

The grounds are extensive and include activities for all ages. There are two large playgrounds; one for children under 8 years old, with the theme ‘enchanted tree people,’ containing wonderful wooden carvings of animals; and a playground for older children called ‘over the wall,’ with three big slides, a climbing wall and swings.

The big draw, in the summer, is the large outdoor swimming pool, with water slides and a sunbathing area. There is also a small petting zoo with deer and farm animals. This is definitely a place to add to your list of activities to do with children near Brussels .

For flower lovers, there is a world class rock garden, with over 1200 different plant species. Visitors will also find an arboretum, plenty of flowers, and even a garden specially designed for the blind. I will definitely be re-visiting this site in the summer.

Restaurant Terborght

It turns out, I had actually visited Huizingen last year, without realizing it. Andrew and I had a lovely evening at the Michelin Starred Restaurant Terborght . This unassuming brick house doesn’t disclose the foodie delights inside. The interior is also subtle earth-tones and not overly styled. The drama is saved for the food which arrives on your plate as tiny works of art.

If you prefer something a little more laid back, the owners have recently opened a brasserie, called Oud Dorp Bistro , featuring Belgian classics. We haven’t tried it yet but if they maintain the caliber of Terborght, it’s well worth a visit.

Gaasbeek Castle

Our third stop was the village of Gaasbeek, further into the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement and well worth the quick drive from Huizingen. If you’re a castle fan, add Gaasbeek Castle to your list! This storybook castle was built by the Duchy of Brabant, in 1240, as defense against the County of Flanders. It didn’t work out so well. The castle was destroyed by Brussels’ city troops, commanded by the Lord of Gaasbeek.

Gaasbeek Castle

Don’t you just expect Prince Charming to coming riding up to Gaasbeek Castle? (Andrew sure would look good on a white horse…)

A new castle was constructed in the 16 th century, which was promptly acquired by Lamoral, Count of Egmont, of the Habsburg Netherlands. Things didn’t work out so well for him either. He was beheaded for treason three years later, sparking the uprising, which eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands.

The castle was passed around various noble families and eventually was donated to the Belgian state. Since 1980, it has been owned by the Flemish Community and its impressive art and furniture collection is on display to the public. As the castle doesn’t open until the first of April, we weren’t able to tour the interior, (rest assured, I’ll be back) but we wandered through the lovely grounds and admired the fairytale exterior.

The interior courtyard of Gaasbeek Castle

The interior courtyard of Gaasbeek Castle

Gaasbeek Castle is regularly home to exhibitions and events and you can join a free guided tour of the Museum Garden every Sunday at 2pm.

International Rose Garden of Coloma

I’ve written extensively about the stunning rose garden of Coloma before, so I won’t go into detail here. I’ll simply say one of Europe’s largest rose gardens is located just minutes from Gaasbeek. If you find yourself on a sunny summer’s day with nothing to do, a trip to the rose garden in the morning, followed by an afternoon at Gaasbeek Castle would be a perfect escape from Brussels.

International Rose Garden of Coloma

The International Rose Garden of Coloma – Isn’t it time you visited?

The Lambic Beer Visitor Centre

What would an outing in Belgium be, without beer? We wrapped up our excursion in Beersel’s brand new Lambic Beer Visitor Centre . For the purposes of full disclosure, neither Marjike nor I are beer drinkers, but we were committed to our research nonetheless. (You’re welcome!)

The small museum offers a movie (available in English), which describes the process of making Belgian lambic beer (Read Andrew’s post on Lambic Beer for more info). The museum then offers a journey through the five senses. The museum exhibits are in Dutch, but English visitors are given a guidebook offering full translations.

For beer-lovers, the best bit is the tasting room. Here you can sample many different types of Belgian lambic beer, including the fruit varieties. You can also taste Beersel’s local brew, Oud Beersel , or visit the brewery itself, every first Saturday of the month, from 11am-1pm.

I must admit, I wasn’t expecting so many things to see and do in the Beersel area. It just goes to show, there are good things hiding around every corner in Belgium, so get out and explore! Do you know any hidden secrets of Belgium? Share them with us in the comments below.

Beersel Castle, or Kasteel van Beersel in Dutch, is a medieval castle located in Beersel, Flemish Brabant in Belgium. Originating in 1300 under the auspices of the Duchy of Brabant, the castle's present configuration dates to 1357. It was twice sacked and was subject to significant restorations in 1491 and 1617. visit beersel castle

Beersel Castle is certainly one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful castles I have been fortunate to visit. The castle is only open a few hours each day from March to November and the visitor numbers are pretty low, which of course led to a wonderful trip! I cycled out from the city centre of Brussels to reach Beersel, and was delighted google maps took me on the old cobbled road that would once have been the main thoroughfare to the castle, but now is a unfrequented country lane passing through cornfields and woods. Its hard to convey the feelings I had wandering around Beersel its just so fantastic, however the dungeon in the basement that remains in the castle proved a nice juxtaposition to the beauty of the turrets and towers. In the dungeon hooks still hang from the ceiling, a X shaped torture rack is the centrepiece of the room, and a small little alcove with barely enough room for a dog gives a good impression of the conditions in which prisoners were kept.

A castle at Beersel was first mentioned in the 12th century however the current fortress was built by Godfrey of Hellebeek between 1300 and 1310 as a defensive base for Brussels. The castle was attacked and damaged by Louis of Male during the war of succession of Brabant in 1357, but was soon repaired. Over a hundred years later, during the rebellion against Maximilian of Austria the castle was besieged. The occupants of the castle supported Maximilian which ultimately led to its plunder and partial destruction, it was restored after the war.

Though a tiled roof was added in the 17th century by the beginning of the 18th century it was no longer inhabited. In 1818 a cotton factory occupied the site of the fortress. In 1928 the castle was donated to ‘The Friends of Beersel Castle’ and restored.

The Beersel Castle an essential stop on our route of castles in Belgium

On a route through Belgium in a motorhome we discover Flanders and specifically its cities, towns, natural parks and most charming castles. We also discovered Belgium with children, with our children, and with our dog Max, a family trip that we will always remember.

Stay on our journey through our posts. For now here we discover the chateau de Beersel, very close to Brussels.

To start ... 1 maximum

know a minimum about belgium. we make it easy for you, here is a basic mini guide.

Learn about the language spoken in Flanders, where is Beersel to find out how to get to Beersel, learn to say thank you in Flemish, discover what typical Belgian food is and have a minimum knowledge of Belgium with this practical mini guide. We make it easy for you.

Beersel Castle: what to see and do

We recommend that you reserve a morning to see Beersel and stroll through its gardens around the moat.

Beersel is very close to Brussels you can go from there drive and park right next door in their parking lot or you can go by train which has a very close stop.

To visit Beersel you must remember don't go on Monday, day that remains closed to the public. And if it is closed you cannot visit its interior or surrounding gardens.

If you want to see the castle, book a few hours and buy your tickets right there. Closes at 17 hours.

The adult price is € 4 and the child under 12 years € 1. Includes a free visit with a paper guide that they give you in English to the castle and gardens around the castle moat. A very reasonable price for what the castle is.

Inside there is not much to see, since it is completely empty, but it is curious to see and fun to go up and down its towers. Be careful with those of you with children under 4 years of age, the stairs are very narrow and the castle cannot be very pleasant to walk with them.

Finally, at the exit and right next to the castle's parking lot, you have a bar with a restaurant terrace that will help you regain strength to continue with your route.

Beersel castles belgium

If you go by motorhome or camper van to the castle of Beersel

You can go to visit the castle in your motorhome, van or car without problem, there is a large, spacious and accessible parking. You can even sleep there with your camper. Although we do not recommend it since it is next to the road and the train tracks.

We recommend you to spend the night in Lennik in a motorhome or camper, where there is a motorhome area with all services, except free and precious choice.

The Lennik RV park is next to a skate park, soccer field, tennis courts, children's playground and has picnic tables. A very good place to spend the night, although some kids go skateboarding at night, but they didn't bother us.

I had no idea there were so many castles in Brussels! Would love to visit Beersel Castle especially. It looks so medieval and stunning. Thanks for sharing!

I did not know that Brussels had so many castles. I wish I had known them before I visited Brussels couple of years ago. I would have tried to at least visit a few of them if not all, especially Groot Bijgaarden Castle. I really loved that castle.

My first trip to Europe I jumped city to city quickly as if I would never return. I only spent one day in Brussels, and it wasn’t even a full day. Huge mistake! I will definitely return to Belgium and visit as many of these as I can. I’m for sure booking a night at Cleerbeek Castle, spending the night in a castle as been a dream for a really long time! Visiting Castles is one of our favourite things to do when we visit Europe. Good to know there are some great fairytale choices when we finally get to Brussels. Great that there are playgrounds for kids. I know they can get a little bored with all the architecture and history. I love all the variety in the designs. Many days of good fun!

I really wish I did castle hunting when I was in Belgium. We did only one and that was on our way to Dinant, I’d have to look up the name. I so enjoyed driving the countryside to get to all the small towns and cities beyond Brussels. Coloma Castle looks so enchanting. I think I’ll return and make this our theme for touring this small yet lovely country.

Wow, I didn't know there are so many castles in Brussels. They are all absolutely beautiful! My husband is obsessed about castles so when ever we are in Europe, we head out to a castle hunt. But it's great fun and we have learned so much about history.

I had no interest in visiting Belgium since it never got my attention but your post changed my thoughts. What a stunning set of castles. Would love to explore them especially Gaasbeek castle.

Wow never knew there were so many Castles around Brussels. And each so beautiful, so different. Love the nature around them. Reason to go back to Brussels. Thanks for all the knowledge.

Later, during the Renaissance, the castle was rebuilt into the contemporary Flemish Renaissance style, adopting the traditional red brick façade with a gorgeous slate roof.
