Due to increased security and permissions with macOS versions 10.14 Mojave and 10.15 Catalina, you will be prompted to authorize the Zoom desktop client and Zoom Rooms client to use the microphone and camera. On macOS version 10.15 Catalina, screen recording will also need to be authorized to allow screen sharing . How to Zoom In and Out in Safari on Your Mac

On your Mac, you may want to zoom in or out to make things on your screen easier to see while browsing the web in Safari. If you zoom in, this will enlarge the text, images, videos, and other objects on a website. You can also zoom out to see more content. By default, Safari sets the zoom level to 100%, but you can change this. This article will help you adjust the size of website content to make a webpage easier to read. More specifically, this article will teach you these:

How you can zoom in to magnify any web content that you have on your Mac.
How you can zoom out if you think the website text and images are too small.
How you can set a default zoom level for all websites.

This article is especially important as users with low vision may prefer to have Safari (and other browsers) zoom into page content.

To quickly zoom in and out

You can zoom the active website you are currently viewing. If you want to quickly zoom in, out, and reset the zooming setting, you can use these keyboard shortcuts. This will temporarily set the zoom level:

Zoom in: Command and +
Zoom out: Command and –
Actual size: Command and 0 (this will restore the zoom to 100%).

Alternatively, in the Safari app, you can click the View menu and select a different zoom level: Actual Size, Zoom In, or Zoom Out.

Increasing or decreasing the Text Size

You can zoom website text. This will only change the text size. The website’s other elements (e.g., images, etc) will not be changed. Here is how:

While you are viewing the website, press and hold down the Option key and from the View menu, select Make Text Bigger or Make Text Smaller.

Or, alternatively, you can use these shortcuts:

Make text bigger: Option, Command and +
Make text smaller: Option, Command and –
Reset to the default text size: Command and 0

Permanently set the zoom level for all pages opened with Safari

As stated above, Safari’s default zoom setting is 100%. Here is how you can change this setting:

Open Safari and in Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Websites > Page Zoom (sidebar).
Select all websites (you can press the Command key and click the websites).
Then click the “When visiting other websites” menu and choose a larger or smaller percentage.

Set the zoom level for a specific website

If a particular website content looks too small or too big for you, then you may want to customize its zoom setting. Here is how:

If you are currently viewing the website, then you can click the Safari menu and Settings for This Website. Choose the Page Zoom option and change the level. You can increase or decrease. The 100% option will return the website to the default magnification level.

If you are not currently viewing the site, then you can choose Safari > Preferences > Websites. Select Page Zoom (sidebar) and then change the zoom level.

Set a minimum font size

This is another zoom setting. You may want to use it. So, if you are thinking that the font sizes on the web appear too small (for example, you may have vision impairment), you can set a minimum text size. In Safari, click Safari > Preferences > Advanced. Check the “Never use font sizes smaller than” box and choose a font size.

Almost good but many problems

I realy wany to keep using this but i keep having problems. Same on bother my systems Like many times it will not work i try to change the zoom setting and it will not respond right now it is doing this. Then at time i make a zoom change it it will not apply right awat but 5min latter all of a sudden the page jumps to a new zoom. Then i am stuck with it locked into a zoom i do not want. Using it with FB is a problem as when i zoom in some i can then no longer acces my FB side panels. And when making a new post as i start to type the zoom tool jumps the page up so i can no longer see what i am typing as it scrools the page up past the area i am tryping in. I am using Monterey on both my systems a Mac Mini M1 and Macbook Air M1.

Settings do not persist, support is non existent

When you add custom domain zoom levels to the settings, they do not get applied when you close Safari and then re-navigate to that domain. You have to manually re-apply the zoom level. This is the single most basic feature of the extension and it does not work. The developer's support website is broken and does not allow you to email them or send a message. This extension appears to be broken and no longer supported.

How to Increase or Decrease the Zoom Level in macOS Safari

Sometimes when I’m viewing an article (usually involving patent images) in Safari, it’s hard to view an entire image. However, you can increase or decrease the zoom level of images (and text) when viewing web pages in the macOS web browser.

When viewing a picture or text, press Command and the + (plus) or – (minus) keys. Alternately, you can click on View in Safari’s menu bar and select Zoom In or Zoom Out.

You can even add zoom buttons to Safari’s toolbar. To do so, right-click (or Control-click) on a space in the Safari toolbar and click Customize Toolbar. Click and drag the Zoom buttons in the dropdown to the are you clicked on the toolbar. Click Done to finish.

Also cool: if you wish to keep images at the same size and only adjust web page font size on the fly, press Option-Command and the + or – keys. You can also hold down the Option key and click on View in the Safari menu bar. This changes the Zoom options to “Make Text Bigger” and “Make Text Smaller.”

The web browser will “remember” your zoom wishes and preferred font size settings until you clear your History. If you want to do that, open Safari, select Clear History, and click the Clear History button.

But, wait!, we’re not done. You can also set the zoom level for a website of your choosing. Once you’ve set up the zoom level for a specific webpage, Safari applies it automatically whenever you view it. Here’s how to set this up:

Go to the site.

Under the Safari menu, click Settings for This Website. You’ll be presented with a variety of options from which to choose, including setting the page zoom percentage.

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

Zoom in and out on what’s onscreen on Mac

You can zoom in and out on the screen using keyboard shortcuts, scrolling on your mouse or trackpad, or tapping on your trackpad, and customize how the zoom area appears.

The Settings window is open on the desktop. A smaller window is zoomed in on a part of the Settings window.

Tip: You can also view a larger version of onscreen text when you move the pointer over it. See Use Hover Text .

Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom

You can zoom in and out by pressing keys on your keyboard.

Open Zoom settings for accessibility for me

Turn on “Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom.”

Do any of the following:

Zoom in: Press Option-Command-Equal Sign (=).

Zoom out: Press Option-Command-Minus Sign (-).

Quickly switch between zoomed in and zoomed out: Press Option-Command-8.

Scroll to zoom

You can zoom in and out by pressing a key on your keyboard and scrolling on your mouse or trackpad.

Turn on “Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom.”

Click the “Modifier key for scroll gesture” pop-up menu, then choose a modifier key (Control, Option, or Command).

To zoom, press and hold the specified modifier key and scroll using your trackpad or mouse.

Tap to zoom

You can zoom in and out by tapping on your trackpad.

Turn on “Use trackpad gesture to zoom.”

Quickly switch between zoomed in and zoomed out: Double-tap the trackpad with three fingers.

Zoom in and out gradually: Double-tap the trackpad with three fingers and drag.

Change the style, size, and location of the zoom area

You can customize how much of the screen you want to zoom, and where the zoom area appears.

Click the “Zoom style” pop-up menu, then choose how you want zoom to appear onscreen:

Full Screen: Zoom takes up the entire screen.

If you’re using more than one display, you can zoom each display independently, without affecting the zoom on your other displays. To show a zoomed version of content from one display on a second display, click Choose Display, then choose the second display.

Split Screen: Zoom is shown on one edge of the screen.

Picture-in-Picture: Zoom is shown in a box around the location of the pointer.

If you choose Split Screen or Picture-in-Picture zoom, you can change the size and location of the zoom window. Click Size and Location, then do one of the following:

For Split Screen: Drag the separator bar to resize the zoom window. To reposition the window, drag it to another edge of the screen. When you’re ready, click OK.

For Picture-in-Picture: Drag an edge or corner of the zoom window to resize it. To reposition the window, drag it to a new location. When you’re ready, click OK.

You can set additional advanced options for the zoom style you selected.

You can use Accessibility Shortcuts to quickly turn Zoom on or off.

You can use your mouse or trackpad to zoom in on PDFs, webpages, and images using gestures like tapping or pinching. See the Apple Support article Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac .

Apple Debuts New Final Cut Pro for iPad and Final Cut Camera App

Apple today introduced a new version of the Final Cut Pro software that's designed to run on the iPad , introducing capabilities designed specifically for the M4 iPad Pro .

Users can get a director's view of each camera in real time, and the settings can be adjusted from the Final Cut Pro for ‌iPad‌ 2 app. There are options for tweaking exposure, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and zoom to get the perfect shots. Preview clips are passed through to Final Cut Pro and then replaced with full-resolution files so users can quickly move from production to editing.

Final Cut Camera is available as a standalone app and in addition to feeding footage to Final Cut Pro, it can be used as a video capture app for recording video with precise manual controls.

Apple added additional customization options to Final Cut Pro, including 12 color-grading presets, eight basic text titles, 20 soundtracks, and new dynamic backgrounds.

With the M4 chip, final rendering with Final Cut Pro is up to 2x faster, and it supports up to 4x more streams of ProRes RAW than the M1 chip. Final Cut for ‌iPad‌ works with the Apple Pencil Pro, adding support for barrel roll and squeeze, improving access to and control over tools.

Apple has also updated Final Cut Pro for the Mac, adding Enhance Light and Color, an AI feature that improves color, color balance, contrast, and brightness in one step. Smooth Slo-Mo, another new feature, blends frames of video intelligently to provide higher-quality movement.

Final Cut Pro for ‌iPad‌ 2 will be available this spring as a free update for existing users, with new users able to purchase it for $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Final Cut Camera will come later in the spring as well, and Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 will be available as a free update for existing users.
