Harley Davidson Premium Tour Pack Latches
- Add to quote
Harley recently released new Premium Tour Pack Latches to compliment their existing replacement hinges. They're available in both chrome and black, though I'm probably not telling you anything you don't know already. I'm looking for feed back on the new latches regarding fit, finish and function. I went by my dealership and I could not find a single bike with them installed on. I talked with my mechanic and he has install several sets of the hinges but not a singe one of the new push button latches. Before I spend $99.00 plus I wanted your feed back. Chrome HD part number is 53000252.
I have the complete sets in chrome & in black on two of my T/P. I brought my first set (chrome) in '10. It still holding up. & I just brought the black set for my RG. Makes a big difference in appearemce. Sent from my iPhone using Motorcycle.com Free App
I put a set of hinges and latches on last week. The hinges seem to be a lot beefier. The latches line up like they are supposed to but require a little more pressure to latch which makes me think the seal is being compressed more than with the OEM latches. They really look good. One big plus is that you can't just remove the hinge pins like with the OEM hinges (two torx drivers and the lid is off in about a minute or less). The only installation issue I had was that after everything was installed and alligned, the key latch wouldn't turn all the way to the latched position. I tried everything. Finally I removed the latch hook and checked everything, found nothing wrong and reinstalled it. After that, it worked perfectly. Even though the allignment is good, I may splurge on the allignment piece that replaces the OEM latch on the inside. I like them.
I have to wonder if these are as prone to breakage as the stock latches. The stock ones are only about $12.00 apiece to replace. I had to swap one on the way to SW II. The parts guy at Twin Cities HD said he sells a lot of them, so he keeps a large stock on hand. I bought an extra just in case.
I bought a set a month ago to put on my 03 king TP. I haven't gotten around to install yet. The box says fits '06 and later. I have asked around and everyone says they should fit the older TP's but that I may need to get longer bolts as the TP material maybe a different thickness.
...and there's another 90 bucks out of my pocket and on the way to Horny Toad HD.
latch not fitting well I just installed the hinges last night and they fit good very easy with the help of my wife , I just got the box back yesterday from my painter ...Great Job. But trying to get the latches lined up is gonna take me to file down part of the lid and I don't want to do that , so I'm gonna reinstall the old Latches and adjust them so there tight. If someone has a idea how to fix this I'm all ears . Thanks Fatkat
I have the new latches and they look and work great. I would recommend them.

Tour Pak latches

Harley had some chrome replacement latches, but they were discontinued very quickly because of poor quality. The latches on my old Ultra gave out after 8 years. They're easy to replace.
Wow. So, what is available since the poor quality chrome latches were discontinued? I know they are easy to replace, what did you replace them with? HD or aftermarket?
I'm surprised at the latches breaking! I'm more concerned about the hinges being so flimsy but I don't feel like popping 50 bucks for the better hinges. They should have installed them as stock in the first place! Just my -2$en#e-
I've got the "Premium Tour Pack Hinges". Easy install and they look better, don't know about how well they'll last.
I guess I have been lucky. I have right at 80K on my 02 Ultra and when on the road the rack on top of my tour pack I normally have a 15 to 20 pound bag with all my clothes and more. Hinges are holding up well but I did have one latch at about 75K mess up going down the road. To me it looked like it just fell apart but not sure. The same latch that messed up I had trouble with it coming unhooked on my trip to Alaska but duck tape worked for the trip to hold it closed. I do keep all my hinges and latches well lubed with DuPont Teflon Dry-Film Lubricant. It is not oily and does not attract dirt like oil.
Everything wears out eventually no matter who or what builds it. Whether its a Mercedes door hinge or a Lexus door handle. Or even a Harley Davidson Tour Pak latch! Repetitive use and the elements get to the materials and fatigue them. Lets face it. If "we play we pay".
I observe that usually over-filling height-wise or attempting to lock misaligned laches down springs them. DAMHIK Like with suitcases, most of us habitually try to put 10 lbs of $hit in a 5 lb pail. I would go with whatever is the best quality one, HD or after-market, and be very careful about what I put in the tour pack. They will last a long time if not abused.
I just found a guy on eBay that sells the upgraded Tour-Pak latches with stainless NON self tapping screws included. Says the screw boss has been beefed up so the bosses don't break off like the originals do. Hope that will be the ticket. Yup, everything breaks eventually, I always like to go with an "upgrade" where possible. Thanks for all the replies. I'll post back with a review when I get them mounted. :chopper:
Do you have a link or reference for this guy who has aftermarket latches???
Are these on all years of tourpacks or just the older one's? My 08 is holding up so far but they do seem kind of cheap. Maybe some chromed barn door hinges will do the trick? LOL
I just replaced mine on my 2009 UC. Not sure why it went bad but it was only $10 from Harley. The bolts holding it on are cover with loctite and one broke
1 latch and my hinges came lose on my 98,so went and bought the upgrade kit from gucci's today. dumb question, where do i get the tool to put the little pop rivets on the hinges?
I've put these hinges on. They come with screws and you have to drill out the 16 rivets. Just be slow and careful. A drill will go through the fiberglass like cheese! Don't chew up your gasket either. Follow the directions and be careful and it will come out real nice. Glad I did it but it takes some effort and nobody really even notices unless you point it out. Incredible! Stronger? Can't really say but it looks like it is.
I've replaced at least one latch per year. It's probably the crappiest part on my Ultra. I now carry a spare latch in my tool roll because they suck so bad. Just replaced another last week. Wish to hell that somebody would come out with a nice set of stainless steel latches with real hardware. I'd pay the proverbial "HD" (nunnerd dollah) tax to have a set that last and don't fall off, break, or strip out in the middle of a road trip. Plus, it's a friggin; Torx 15, which is not part of any standard toolkit. I mean seriously, what says "quality" better than chromed pot metal with self-threading screw sockets? :badmood:
Well both latches on my 03 with 33K just disintegrated. Both of them at the same exact time! Just got the bike back from the dealer and the same day as I opened the tour=pack to get my helmet, they both just came apart. No idea why. I already upgraded to the premium hinges and I hope the new latches have the beefier boss. But, they both broke at the catch, not the screw. I personally think the dealer tried to latch the lid when it wasn't down correctly. Not worth getting upset over. But. I will say that H-D should use some kind of alignment pilot post because if you unlatch the top while still locked, you can flex the top and disengage the lock. Who knows. maybe it's a safety feature!

Help with tour pack latches
- Add to quote
Hi I have a 09 tour pack I just bought and had painted....to go on my 14 Road King...my issue is the latches seem to keep loosening and my lid shifts and then it comes unlocked...my question is do I just need new latches? Or is there something better out there? Any help is appreciated
Check the big weather gasket, it can collapse some, or move out of place allowing the lid to move around and the latches come loose.
Thank you ...I will
my 14 and 17 limiteds have both came open while on the road. if i lock the latch they will not come open on the road.

Sweet I like that idea even better...plus everything is metal thx for the sizes
tommytailspin said: i never took my 14 limited in for the recall. i like the dsues fasteners and have never had an issue. the 17 came with the new ones, i really don't like em. Click to expand...
I'm curious what brand the tour pack is. Is it HD or aftermarket? The reason I ask is that I bought the Hogworkz tour pack for my Road King and it popped open with a heavy Kuryakn bag on the top rack. The weight caused the cheap plastic body of the tour pack to crack at the hinges. I repaired it with epoxy and then reinforced the inner lip of the pack with metal. I also always lock it but that is no guarantee it won't pop open as mine did so several times. The issue is the flex of the cheap, thin plastic on the Hogworkz pack when you go over rough road.
I have a 09 HD tour pack...it could just be that the locks are wore out ...I guess...
