When Is Winter In Thailand: Does It Snow And How Cold Is It

Thailand Travel Essentials

So you are planning to visit Thailand in the winter. Good for you! It is the best time when to visit Thailand.

In this article, I will write about the air temperature in Thailand during the winter as well as other things to keep in mind when traveling to Thailand in the cool season. If you came here to find out an answer to the question does it snow in Thailand, read the article until the end to find it out.

So, when is Winter in Thailand? Winter in Thailand starts at the end of December and continues until the end of March. By the meteorological calendar winter in Thailand starts either at 21st or 22nd of December and ends either on March 20 or March 21. Winter months in Thailand are November, December, January, February, and March.

It is more common to talk about Thai winter by using such term as cool season because winter in Thailand is nowhere near to cold and snowy winters elsewhere in the world.

Does Thailand Have Winter Season?

Yes, Thailand does have a winter season, and it is the best time when to visit this colorful country.

See this illustration made by BookMundi about the best time when to visit Thailand.

Best Time to visit Thailand Bookmundi

Check out their website to see the information about the rainfalls in Thailand as well.

As I have already mentioned the winter solstice in Thailand is on December 22 although the cool season in Thailand normally begins in November.

What Are The Winter Months In Thailand?

The winter months in Thailand are November, December, January, February, and March.

The good news is that in winter the sun is shining for an average of 8 hours a day. The sunniest months are December and January.

During December, January, and February there is almost no rain at all.

As the air temperature in winter cools off to around 27 °C (79 °F) and occasionally even lower, it is a very pleasant temperature for a perfect vacation in Thailand. Summer temperatures in Thailand are almost unbearable for first-time travelers to Thailand.

When Is Winter In Phuket Thailand?

I smile as I write this combination of words – winter in Phuket 🙂

Winter or the cool season in Phuket begins in November and ends in February. The average air temperature in Phuket during these months is 26.5 °C (79.7 °F)

Phuket has to be the best winter destination in Thailand. Just be aware of big crowds and high prices if you’re planning your travel during December and January.

Where To Spend Winter In Thailand?

Of course, most tourists head to Phuket. I would say that it is the best destination in Thailand for first-time travelers. It has beautiful scenery from the pictures that you’ve seen online, and everyone can find activities that are best suited to their taste. I guess there is no need for me to sell you the idea of going to Thailand as you have already made up your mind 🙂

Note that December and January is high season in Thailand. For tourists, it means paying more for everything. Flight tickets, hotels, restaurants, various services, and everything else will cost you more than it normally would.

To travel cheaper and to still get everything that Thailand has to offer I recommend visiting Thailand already in September or October.

I would say that November is the cheapest month to fly to Thailand. Note that September and October are the months when it rains the most – almost every day.

For me, it has never been a problem as I’ve noticed that it usually rains after 6 PM when it is already dark outside.

How To Dress For Winter In Thailand?

So, you’re planning to visit Thailand in the winter. Although the winter sounds cold, let me remind you that we’re talking about 27 °C (80.6 °F) here. Many travelers including myself would say that it is always summer in Thailand.

Nevertheless, depending on your destination and planned activities there might be situations where you would be happy to have a sweatshirt or a warm jacket with you.

I can think of at least two situations like that. First one is traveling to Northern Thailand. In Chiang Mai one the most popular tourist destination is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Its elevation is 1050 meters (3445 feet) above the sea level, but it is possible to go even higher. And believe me, if I say that on a rainy day in September it could get really cold up there. Also during the day.

Second is having a speedboat from Phuket to one of its surrounding islands. This article is written by Sandis Mukans from thailandtravelessentials.com. In winter the weather in Thailand is mostly sunny, but you might experience some showers. Because of the combination of wind and rain, it could get really cold on the speedboat.

In my article “Dress code for tourists in Thailand” I write about several topics regarding appropriate clothing for a trip to Thailand.

Note that you won’t need your typical winter clothes in Thailand. Leave the winter jackets at home, but pack a sweater or two.

What Is The Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded In Thailand?

On December 21, 2017, the air temperature in Doi Inthanon National Park decreased to -5 degrees Celsius, but apparently, it still has to be authenticated by the responsible institutions.

It means that officially the coldest temperature ever recorded in Thailand is -1.4 °C that was recorded in Sakhon Nakhon on January 2, 1974.

On January 23, 2014, the air temperature in Bangkok decreased to 15.6 °C. It was its coldest record in 30 years. That year the air temperature outside Bangkok dropped even lower. Sadly that year it took away the lives of 63 people.

What’s The Coldest It Gets In Thailand?

The average air temperature in Thailand in winter is 27 °C (80.6 °F), but occasionally it might drop below freezing. Those occasions are more likely to happen in Northern-Thailand where the temperature might drop enough to form frost.

By the way, the water temperature in winter is about 27 °C (80.6 °F) as well.

What Is The Coldest Month In Thailand?

The coldest month in Thailand is December. The average air temperature in Bangkok in December is 26 °C (78.8 °F).

Yes, it does feel wrong to me when I type the word cold and think of  26 °C at the same time 🙂

Is Thailand Cold In January?

The minimum average air temperature in Thailand in January is 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 °F). The maximum average temperature is 32 °C (89.6 °F).

Keep in mind that the temperature in Northern Thailand is always lower and you can actually notice it. Especially when visiting Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon National Parks. Usually, the difference is about 5 degrees Celsius.

I would definitely recommend packing a sweatshirt or a jacket and long pants if you’re planning a trip to such cities as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and their surrounding areas.

Does Thailand Have Snow?

No, Thailand does not have snow. It is unlikely if not impossible that you will see snow during your trip to Thailand.

There are some reports of snow in Thailand during its winter in late 1955. The same year when the coldest temperature ever was recorded in Thailand.

Is There Skiing In Thailand? No, the skiing is not possible in Thailand. I stumbled upon this question when I did a small research about winter in Thailand, and I found it funny. The Thai climate

Thailand has a tropical climate with three different seasons:

  • The hot season (March to mid-May)
  • The rainy season (mid-May to October). In the south, the rainy season has a slightly different pattern.
  • The dry and relatively cool season (November to February). This season is more present in the north and inland areas, and less near the coast and in the south.

– The north of Thailand

In the north, the climate is hot almost the whole year. Only in the winter (December and January), it is sunny during the day and colder in the night (13 °C  – 15 °C (55 °F  – 59 °F) )

The best time to visit the north is in the winter months of December and January. After February the heat is starting to get intense quickly.

– The middle of Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya)

In Bangkok, the capital, the climate is hot all year round. In the winter season (mid-November to  January) you normally have good sunny weather with temperatures during the day around 30/32 °C (86/90 °F) and during the night around 20/22 °C (68/72 °F). From February onwards the temperatures will start to rise until May when the monsoon rain started. It is also humid during this time. Pattaya, not far from Bangkok, has a similar climate. But has less rain in the summer.

The best time to visit Bangkok is from December to mid-February since it is the least hot and outside of the rainy season.

– The south of Thailand (Phuket, Ko Samui)

The south has a climate that is hot all year round. The summer is very rainy as the monsoon hits the coast directly from the sea. In the winter there is a lot less rain.

Ko Samui is best visited from the middle or the end of January to April. Phuket on the west side is best visited from December to March. Around April the pre-monsoon starts with more and more showers.

Find affordable housing

Snowbirds can stay in a hotel or guesthouse, go to a resort or rent condos or villas. What type of housing is best for you depends on your own requirements. Do you want to stay in a more ex-pat enclave or more between local Thai people? Do you prefer a sea view or a more quiet location, and what is your budget?

In a lot of cases, you can get a discount for longer stays at both hotels and guesthouses in Thailand. Especially if you're traveling in the low season you can even get a discount for a shorter stay like a three-night stay.

The internet makes it much easier to find affordable rentals. Several websites can help with finding long term rentals:

– Some tips for finding an affordable rental:

  • Check multiple websites. Sometimes you can find better deals for the same location. Some properties also have their own websites. Google the name of the property and/or address.
  • Try to talk to the owner of the house. Sometimes you can get a better deal for a longer rental period.
  • Starting the rental directly with the owner can be cheaper than using a rental website.
  • Use google maps Satellite view to see how the property is located.
  • Use google street view to see how the environment looks like. Often you get an idea of how the view will be. You can also see how you have to walk to places like the beach or other locations in the neighborhood.

Health care

Thailand offers excellent medical care if you have a bit of money. The hospitals have an excellent reputation and remain inexpensive as are private clinics, doctors and dentists.

There are special insurance policies that you can close for long term travelers if you think you need this..

Do I need to speak the Thai language?

English is widely understood and spoken in the bigger cities and major tourist destinations in Thailand. If you visit more rural areas of Thailand you will find fewer or no people that understand English. In general, not many people that visit Thailand will have a language problem.

Getting around

How to get around: Thailand has both a train and bus system, as well as tuk-tuks, (ideal for shorter trips), and cabs (for longer trips). In the larger cities, you may even luck out with Uber!

– Flights

From many locations, you can find reasonably priced flights to Thailand. Do not only check flights to Bangkok but also to some of the other locations like Phuket, that could have a cheaper flight. As Thailand is a big country also internal flights are often used to visit the North or the South.

A good website to find cheap flights is www.skyscanner.com . There you can search for flights from your location to a country instead of airport to airport. That way you can easily see if flying to other airports is cheaper.

– Train

Trains in Thailand cover most of the country and they are one of the cheapest ways to travel. But you cannot reach all destination. Also, some more popular destinations like Phuket do not have a train station. Keep in mind that trains travel much slower than in Europe and North America with an average speed of around 40 km/h. There are 3 classes, for first-class to the cheapest 3rd class. In first-class you can have for longer journeys one or more meals included in the ticket price. In 3rd class, there are vendors that will sell you all kinds of food and drinks. Those vendors are not allowed in the first class where you will find an attendant in each car.

In general, trains leave the originating station either right on time or very close to it.

Some tickets you can book in advance with and pay with your credit card or PayPal. Check the website 12go.asia/en

travel thailand winter

– Buses

Almost all towns in Thailand have a bus station, and most of them will see different bus operators heading to and arriving from various destinations throughout the country. The network is much bigger than the train or routes covered by flights.

You can purchase a bus ticket at the bus station. But for some of the routes, it is also possible to purchase them online. Check the website 12go.asia/en . There you will also find timetables and prices from different bus operators.

– Rental car

Using a rental car in Thailand can be a really good option. In some locations like Phuket, there are no trains and a car gives you the possibility to leave your resort and explore the rest of the country.

Driving in Thailand is not much different than in Europe, Australia or North America. In Thailand, they drive on the left-hand side, but you will get used to this pretty quickly. The traffic rules are not much different and there are not a lot of aggressive or pushy drivers. The biggest difference is the number of motorbikes, and some Thai drivers like to overtake in places that you should not so watch out for that.

– Other transport like taxies and tuk-tuks

In Bangkok and most big other cities, you will find numerous taxis and tuk-tuks waiting for you outside your hotel or resort. Those are not provided by the hotel, but they are fine to use. You can also flag one down on the street. Be prepared that most taxi drivers do not speak a lot of English, so you have to be clear where you want to go. It can be a good idea to ask the hotel to write down the location where you want to go to Thai, so you can show it to the taxi driver. The same with the location of your Hotel so you can use that on your way back. An alternative is to show the location on Google maps.

If you find a taxi, always make sure that they turn on the taxi meter before you leave for your destination. If a taxi is not using a meter they can charge you whatever they want. Make sure you are using a licensed taxi, and make a note of the driver's number in case something happens.

Tip: you can also use one of the online taxi services like Uber and Grab. That way you do not have to worry about the meter and you can see the route that was taken to your destination. Also getting a taxi during busy times is easier this way.

– Ferries

Thailand has a lot of islands and getting there means taking a boat or a ferry. Most boats and ferries are save to use, but we would not recommend to use them in really bad weather. Also, check if the boat is not overloaded. A lot of islands are also served by small speedboats, that only take a few people.

Traveling by boat is inexpensive and often there are multiple options. Check with the local tourist office for more details.

Where to meet other people

A lot of more touristic places have ex-pats, other snowbirds or people that like to spend most of there winter in a nice warm location. There are always bars that will see many of those people coming together. Just ask people you see if they know where to go or check with the local tourist office.

Another way of finding people is to use a website like meet up . All you have to do is sign up and join a group. When there is something to do you will get an email notification. They have a lot of different groups of ex-pats or other people that stay in Thailand for a longer time. You can find activities from people that like to go walking together to Yoga. Or you can join the local volunteer beach trash pick-up group, and meet people during the activity.

travel thailand winter

Thailand has many popular and less known spots. The best spot for you will depend on many factors like do you like a busy place or a quiet environment. If you are planning to spend some time in Thailand it could be a good idea to first do a scouting holiday. During that time you visit several places to see what fits best for you.

– Phuket

Phuket is a famous location for people from around the world. The island attracts many visitors and has many great beaches and nice restaurants. It is one of Thailand's biggest retirement destination.

In Phuket there are many things to do besides relaxing at your pool, swimming in the ocean, and exploring the island. Think about activities like playing a round of gold, Elephant Trekking, canoeing through mangroves, or sailing.

– Hua Hin

Hua Hin is another popular destination in Thailand with a lot of second homes in the area. It has white sandy beaches and tropical vegetation. It is also well known from the Black Mountain Golf Course in Hua Hin that is considered one of the best championship courses in Thailand. There are also a lot of good restaurants.

– Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is in the north of Thailand and has many museums and historic temples like the famous Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple. It is well known as a food mecca with the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School. There, but also in many other places, you can learn how to cook Thai cuisine.

What can you do in Thailand in the winter

As the winter season is the main tourist season there are lots of things to do in Thailand. December 5 th is Father's Day (Formerly the King's Birthday Holiday) and a public holiday. That day you will see candlelight vigils in places such as Bangkok.

Also special is Lunar New Year (Chinese new year). The celebrations mark the start of spring on the lunisolar calendar each January or February. During that day you will see lion dances, parades, stage shows, and lots of fireworks.

Also enjoy the unique experience to see flowers bloom in the winter, in various places. To fully enjoy all these colors it is best to visit the north of Thailand.

travel thailand winter

– Bangkok

Visit some of the stunning temple and pagoda complexes, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) and the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). If you have enough time take a day trip to the ancient capital Ayutthaya. In the second half of December "The Glorious of Ayutthaya Fair" will be held in the Ayutthaya Historical Park compound. This annual festival brings the ancient capital back to life and you can see what the locals did over 250 years ago. If you are there at the weekend you can also see the spectacular light and sound show.

In and around Bangkok you will find several different floating markets. Damnoen Saduak is the most popular but Amphawa is more authentic. You can find genuine Thai seafood or shop for local crafts.

Even do the main religion of Thailand is Buddhism you still will see the Christmas holiday season with Christmas illumination in the shopping districts around Siam and Phrom Phong BTS Stations. This starts in the second half of November until early-January.

– Outside of Thailand

If you like to do something outside of Thailand for a short while you can look for low-priced flights to Borneo, and spent a weekend there gazing at wild orangutans and pygmy elephants. Another option could be to find a flight to Cambodia and visit the ancient temples in Angkor. Or go diving in a Malaysian island resort.

There's always shopping.  Large cities such as Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are a shopaholic's paradise, where you can find everything from handmade silk clothing to the latest electronics.

What does it cost to stay in Thailand in the winter?

In general, Thailand is about a quarter of the cost compared with a major western city. Both accommodation and food are really a lot cheaper. Nowhere else will you find $2 bowl of Pad Thai with authentic spicy Thai flavors.

Of course, if you choose for a posh resort in Phuket and Krabi it can cost you $1500 a month. But the further you move away from the major tourist destinations, the better the deals become. It is not hard to find nice apartments not far from the beach from $250 a month.

In a place like Pattaya, you can rent a fully furnished bungalow with air conditioning, a pool, three bedrooms and two bathrooms from $650 a month. Sometimes you have to pay extra for fast internet and electricity. Most people do not use the kitchen that often as it is really cheap to eat out.

Packing List

  • Packing List Tips
  • Miscellaneous
  • Weather: The fall, winter, and spring weather in Thailand will normally be hot during the day and hot/warm during the night. Of course in the fall and spring it will be warmer than in the winter. You have to pack accordingly.

Warm clothing: Even when you go to a warm location like Thailand you should not forget to take some things with you for your trip back home. When you return you are adapted to the warmer weather and need something to protect you from your hometown temperatures.

Consider the Weather: Always look at the type of weather in Thailand. Things like humidity, wind, and rain do not show up in the temperature graph but can have a great impact on your wardrobe. There are several sites with long term forecasts and climate information. Is there often a short afternoon downpour like in the tropics, you maybe need to take a strong umbrella and shoos that can cope with the rain. If there is often a lot of wind you might need a more wind-resistant coat.

Check the local Shopping options: Try to find information about the local shopping options near your location in Thailand. Are there stores where you can buy all your daily supplies, or are some things difficult to get? For some more remote locations, the options can be limited. If a certain item is really important for you might need to take it with you.

Look at the Local Culture: The local culture in Thailand can impact your wardrobe. If most activities are in more upscale locations you might take some more appropriate clothes with you. Or travelling if you travel to certain countries women need to cover themselves in certain areas.

Amenities: Know what’s Included in your house or apartment. Is there a coffee maker, a toaster, a washer and dryer, an iron, what is in the kitchen, what kind of towels are there? Things that are there means you do not have to take them with you. A furnished apartment or house can mean something from a few pieces of furniture to a well-stocked place with all the things you have at home. But most of the time your rental will not be stocked.

Mix and match: Wear layers so you can use your wardrobe more efficiently. And do not worry about wearing something more often, probably only you will notice this.

Important for you: If there is something that is really important for you that you want to have present in your house or apartment, take it with you. This can be something like a special knife for the kitchen, or a small mirror that you use in the morning. You can also purchase it locally if it is not that expensive.

Pet supplies: If you take your pet with you don’t forget to take supplies for a few days with you. And enough medication, vitamins, or other supplies if you can not purchase them in Thailand locally.

Food: Don’t take a lot of food with you. Only when there is something you really can not live without you, and it is not too heavy you could consider taking it with you.

Towels: Not all locations include bigger towels for the swimming pool or a visit to the beach. If you have to take them and don’t have a lot of room you can buy some big thin towels.

Office supplies: Normally you will not find any office supplies in your house or apartment. If you think you will use them you could pack some supplies like a scissor, notepaper, envelopes, some pens, and more depending on your needs.

Limit yourself: Don’t take too many shoes and jackets, you will not need them that often.

Best-fitting: Bring your favorite and best-fitting items that can multi-function

Washer: Do you have a washer and dryer onsite, you don’t need to pack a lot of clothes

One of my favorite things about Thailand in the winter? The humidity takes a holiday . So you can wave goodbye to that tropical stickiness that can turn your beach day into a sauna session.

And let’s not forget about the rain or rather, the lack of it. Thailand in winter is mostly dry , especially in Central Thailand and bustling Bangkok. So you can leave your umbrella at home and make room for more exciting stuff in your luggage, like snorkeling gear or an extra pair of sandals!

What to Pack for Thailand in the Winter Temperature

1. Clothing: Despite it being winter in Thailand the weather stays relatively warm so you’d want to stick with lightweight, loose, and natural fabrics like cotton or linen. The fashion in Thailand is very laid back, but remember, it’s important to dress modestly when visiting temples .

  • Pack a few light tees and shorts for daytime exploring. I really like this type of fabric.
  • For evenings, consider 3 pairs of shorts/skirts and 3 pairs of cute tank tops/shirts.
  • Pack one pair of loose-fitting pants for temples, and for riding on scooters.

2. Swimwear: You can’t visit Thailand without taking a dip in its beautiful beaches or pools. Pack at least two bathing suits, so you always have a dry one handy. Don’t forget a towel and a thin cover-up for lounging by the beach or pool. On some of the more local beaches you see women in tee shirts and shorts swimming, so keep that in mind if you want to blend in.

3. Shoes: Comfortable footwear is a must. Slip-on shoes or tennis shoes are ideal for city exploring, while a pair of water shoes can come in handy for beach days or boat trips. And of course, a pair of flip-flops is essential for any tropical destination. If you plan on doing some hikes, you can get away with tennis shows in most places.

4. Outerwear: Even though it’s warm during the day, the temperature can drop in the evening. Pack a light sweater or sweatshirt to wear on cooler nights. A light rain jacket is also a good idea, as unexpected showers happen all the time in Thailand.

5. Accessories: A stylish hat and sunglasses are not only chic but also important for protecting yourself from the sun. A shawl can be useful for covering up when visiting religious sites, and it can double up as an extra layer for cooler evenings.

6. Essential Items: Don’t forget your bug spray and sunscreen . A water bottle is also essential to stay hydrated during your adventures. And remember, if you plan on doing any hiking or outdoor activities, dry sacks can be very useful for keeping your belongings safe and dry.

Thailand Winter Temperature by Month

By planning a winter vacation to Asia , you could benefit from fabulous weather.

The best time of year to travel to Thailand is during the winter months when temperatures are mild and there are fewer rainy days. December, January and February are great months to visit Thailand as you’ll dodge the wet season.

I’ve done two separate trips to Thailand, one of them during the rainy season! Every day monsoon-like downpours would last for a couple of hours at a time. Twinned with the warm air, this made the atmosphere very sticky, close and insanely humid.

It felt like a tropical sauna at times and found myself seeking respite in air-conditioned cafes or museums to dodge it. It certainly ate into a chunk of tourist time each day waiting for the weather to clear up.

Weather in Thailand in November

The weather is warm but still mild, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C. There’s very little rain, compared to the wet season, so you can avoid the worst of the humidity and stickiness associated with it. Plus, there are fewer crowds as many visitors often wait until December for the holidays.

Weather in Thailand in December

In December, temperatures remain mild but the humidity drops significantly. Without the rain of the wet season, tourists can enjoy slightly better weather than in November. The combination of mild weather and low humidity provides a great opportunity for outdoor activities, such as visiting Thai temples and outdoor activities.

Weather in Thailand in January

January is usually the coldest month in Thailand. The weather of Thailand in January sees temperatures averaging between 22-25°C and lower humidity. The amount of rain decreases again, and the days are much drier and more comfortable. This is a great time to explore the country’s many attractions as there are fewer crowds than in December.

Weather in Thailand in February

The dry season continues with mild temperatures and lower humidity. It’s the perfect time to enjoy many outdoor activities, including exploring Thai temples and beaches. The temperature averages between 22-25°C, making it an ideal time to travel and experience everything that Thailand has to offer.

When Is the Best Weather in Thailand?

The best time to visit Thailand is generally from November through February. During this period, temperatures are mild and humidity levels are lower. This allows for more comfortable outdoor activities like sightseeing and beach visits. Additionally, the rain subsides so most days are sunny with minimal rainfall.

The winter months coincide with the Thailand peak travel season with the pinnacle of peak tourist season in Thailand falling around Christmas and New Year.

If you’re planning a winter vacation the best month to travel to Thailand would be November or February to make the most of the best weather and avoid the Christmas holiday rush.

What to Wear in Thailand in Winter?

You might be wondering what to wear in Thailand in December, or any of the winter months.

In the cool season, temperatures can feel fresh in the evening and morning, so it is important to pack layers. A light jacket or sweater would be useful at night and in air-conditioned rooms, but you can usually leave them behind during the day as temperatures are warm.

Hats and sunglasses are also important accessories during winter months as there are plenty of sunny days even with lower temperatures. Opt for shoes that provide grip on slippery surfaces since there can still be some rain during this time of year.

Weather in Thailand: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

travel thailand winter

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country recognized as a destination for tropical beaches, grand palaces, ancient ruins, and Buddhist temples . Thailand has a tropical climate with a distinct monsoon season, which means that whatever time of year you visit , it’s going to be warm, humid, and might even be wet.

There are three seasons in Thailand which can be described as the following: a cool season between November and February, a hot season between March and May, and a rainy (monsoon) season between June and October. Heat, humidity, and rainfall vary significantly, depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Cyclone Season in Thailand

Cyclones, also called typhoons, typically affect continental Thailand. While Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia bear the brunt of these powerful storms from the Pacific, they still bring heavy rains. Thailand is typically prone to typhoons from June through December, although they are more common from September to November. Indian Ocean cyclones can occur year-round due to the warm sea but are most common between April and December. In general, Thailand is less affected by storms than its Southeast Asian neighbors.

Popular Areas in Thailand

Chiang Mai and the rest of the northern region of Thailand enjoys cooler, milder weather throughout the year. During the cool season, average highs are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), and average lows dip down to 60 F (16 C). Temperatures can go even lower up in the mountains, making it the only region in Thailand where you’ll even need a sweater outside.

Travelers should keep in mind that hot season temperatures can easily hit above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) or higher during the day. The weather doesn't cool off much at night, although higher elevations in some areas make it more bearable than in the rest of the country. In regards to inclement weather, the rainy season sees less rain here than in other parts of the country. Regardless, monsoon storms can still be dramatic and intense, especially during September, which is the rainiest month of the year.

The best time to visit Northern Thailand is between October and April, although travelers should keep in mind that this is the peak tourist season.

Bangkok and Central Thailand

Bangkok's three seasons all share one thing in common: heat. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Bangkok was 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius), and that was back in 1955. Cool season temperatures are generally around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), so it’s no surprise that it’s such a favorite time to visit.

During the hot season, visitors can expect highs to reach above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), with some sweltering days even hotter. If you’re visiting Bangkok during the warm season, make sure to plan activities around the weather, as the heat makes it difficult to walk outside for too long. For most of the rainy season, temperatures cool off by a few degrees, and storms only last an hour or two before passing.

Tourist season is the highest in November through March for cities like Bangkok. Since the weather cools dramatically during December through February, travel is a bit more pleasurable during these cooler months.

The weather in Southern Thailand follows a slightly different pattern than the rest of the country. There’s no cool season, as temperatures only vary by about 10 degrees between the hottest and coldest months of the year. It's typically between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (27 and 32 degrees Celsius) on average in cities like Phuket and the Central Gulf Coast.

The rainy season happens at different times on the peninsula, whether on the east or west side. If you’re in the west, where Phuket and other Andaman Coast destinations are, the rainy season starts earlier in April and lasts through October. If you’re on the east side, where Koh Samui and the other Gulf Coast destinations are, most of the rainfall happens between October and January.

Tourists most commonly travel to southern Thailand between November and February when the weather is cooler and drier. To avoid hot weather and monsoon season, it's recommended to visit during the more popular months.

Spring in Thailand

Early spring in Thailand is still considered the dry season in Thailand and is quite hot, with temperatures during the day regularly exceeding 95 F (35 C)—if not more. Humidity matches the temperatures, which means being outdoors can be almost unbearable for those who are sensitive to heat. Given the temperatures, May is among the most affordable months to visit Thailand.

What to Pack: Pack light, breathable clothing, preferably moisture-wicking. Spring is hot and wet, and you'll want to dress accordingly.

Summer in Thailand

Prepare yourself for more high temperatures in the summer, with the addition of heavy rains. Prices are cheaper for travel and accommodation during the summer, but temperatures are usually upwards of 96 degrees. June, for example, averages 90 F (32 F) with ocean temperatures of a balmy 82 F (28 C). Koh Samui is typically the warmest location during the summer months. If you're sensitive to heat or high humidity, these months are best avoided.

What to Pack: Like spring, summer in Thailand is scorching. In addition to comfortable clothing, you don't want to forget bug spray, sunscreen, and a good hat to protect you from the sun. Summer is also quite wet, making a lightweight poncho or raincoat an indispensable part of any traveler's wardrobe.

Fall in Thailand

While Thailand doesn't experience traditional fall, September marks the end of the rainy season. Luckily, temperatures begin to drop as well, averaging around 86 F (30 C). This is still considered the low season too, which means visitors will find uncrowded beaches and a warm sea. October is dry and pleasant as well, but this marks the return of tourists to the country. The rainy season ends for good in November, except for the southeastern part of the country.

What to Pack: In fall, you can begin to pack away your rain gear, but temperatures are still quite warm so dress accordingly.

Winter in Thailand

Winter is Thailand's most popular season for beach visits and sightseeing. The winter is dry and warm, with temperatures of around 86 F (30 C) in the south and as cool as 75 F (24 C) in the country's northern reaches. December and January are the country's most-visited months, but February is popular as well and still a great month for beach-going; water temperatures usually hover around 80 F (27 C).

What to Pack: Winter is Thailand's "coldest" season, but cotton and linen fabrics are still a must. In the country's northern more mountainous regions, a sweater or other light cover-up might come in handy for cooler nights.

Does Thailand Have All 4 Seasons?

Thailand does not have four seasons. The temperatures are steady year-round, and there isn’t a significant variation in the months to make them four seasons.

There aren’t four seasons because the country is close to the equator, classifying the climate as tropical.

Many tropical countries like Thailand have three seasons instead of four.

For planning your trip, you can view Thailand as having three seasons, including the hot season, the wet season, and the cool season.

There’s also a decent amount of cloud cover during the winter, making Chiang Mai a bit more pleasant than hot southern locations.

Does It Snow in Thailand? Everything You Need to Know

Thailand is a popular travel destination, famous for its beaches, delicious food and fascinating culture. If you’re trying to decide on the best time to visit, you might wonder, “Does it snow in Thailand?”

This guide to winter in Thailand will provide all the information you need. You will understand how Thai seasons work and ultimately determine the best time to go to make the most of what this beautiful country offers.

I have travelled to Thailand during the winter season and can confirm that it is an excellent time to visit. In short, it doesn’t snow in Thailand, and its winter is quite different from what many people in Europe and North America are accustomed to.

Let’s delve into the details of Thai winter and explain why you won’t need to worry about snow, regardless of which part of the country you’re in.

Does it Snow in Thailand?

No, it does not normally snow in Thailand. The reason lies in its tropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 18 to 38°C (64 – 100°F) depending on the season.

For snow to form and remain on the ground, temperatures must dip below 2°C (35.6°F). In other words, it is simply too hot for snow in Thailand.

You might be wondering about the photo of snow in Krabi above. Don’t worry, it’s not real.

So, if you’re fond of snowy winters, Thailand might not be the right destination for you. But if you’d like to swap snow for sunshine and warmth, Thailand is a perfect choice.

Has Thailand Ever Had Snow?

Although it doesn’t normally snow in Thailand, there has been an exception. On the 7th of January 1955, Chiang Rai , Thailand’s northernmost province, experienced a brief snowfall. The snow remained on the ground for 14 hours before melting.

This event remains the only documented instance of snowfall in Thailand. However, it wasn’t the kind of winter snowfall familiar to those in Europe or North America. Instead, it was made up of hailstones which are not uncommon in the mountainous parts of northern Thailand.

So, while you might encounter hailstorms when traveling in northern Thailand, witnessing actual snow in the country is extremely rare.

Does Thailand Have Winter?

Although it doesn’t snow in Thailand, the country does technically have a winter season spanning from November to February. This period is often referred to as the cool season. During these months you will find that the days are hot and pleasant, but the heat is not as intense as during other times of the year.

The average “winter” temperatures in Thailand typically range between 28°C and 33°C (82°F to 91°F). It is also the driest period, with relatively low humidity for the tropics.

The cool season is considered the best times to visit Thailand. The heat and humidity are still comfortable. This is an ideal time to really explore the country, both its cities and beautiful nature.

How Many Seasons Are There in Thailand?

Thailand doesn’t experience the four distinct seasons that travellers from Europe and North America are accustomed to. Instead, its weather is defined by three: the cool season, the hot season and the wet season.

As previously mentioned, the cool “winter” season runs from November to February. It is followed by the hot season that lasts from March to May. April tends to be the hottest month when average temperatures exceed 30°C (86°F).

During the wet season that runs between June and October, the country sees heavy rainfall and even occasional typhoons. Rain normally manifests in short intense showers in the afternoon or overnight. September and October see the heaviest rainfall.

Although the wet season is not the hottest, its high humidity can make outdoor activities less comfortable.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Thailand?

The best time to travel to Thailand is during the cool season, from November to February. During this period, temperatures are pleasant, humidity is low, and rain is less likely to disrupt your travel plans.

However, the cool season in Thailand is also the high season, which means larger crowds and higher flight and accommodation prices. Nevertheless, there’s still great value to be had and lesser-known spots to explore. You just need to do your research and book everything in advance.

As an alternative, March and early April also offer sunny days and a low chance of rainfall. Crowds should also subside a little by then. However, late April may feel unbearably hot and humid which would make active exploration less pleasant.

Another time worth considering is late October. It is the last month of the wet season, so the weather is still unpredictable. However, at the end of the month dry sunny days become more common. This is when you’re likely to enjoy decent weather without the crowds and the high season price tag.

It is also worth remembering that due to Thailand’s size, different regions may have slightly different climates. For example, Thailand’s east coast islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are more sheltered from the monsoon season that their west coast counterparts such as Phuket and Koh Phi Phi.

As a result, the east coast islands enjoy drier weather and calmer sea during the wet season, making them a great destination during the northern hemisphere summer.

However, a word of warning, Koh Samui can get quite busy in late July due to school holidays. It might better to travel there in late June or early July for a more peaceful experience.

Where to Go in Thailand in Winter?

With the cool “winter” season’s pleasantly hot temperatures and dry weather, you can’t really go wrong with any destination in Thailand during this season.

It’s a great time to enjoy the beaches as you’re unlikely to experience much rain. Although the temperatures are high, they are also comfortable enough for urban exploration or active adventures such as hiking and jungle trekking.

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Thailand several times throughout the cool season. Here are my favourite places to visit at this time of the year.

Thailand’s bustling capital is a fantastic travel destination famous for its relentless energy, delicious street food, decadent shopping malls and iconic historic sights. Whether you choose to tag on a couple of days in Bangkok as part your beach holiday or explore it for a few weeks, the city has a raft of things to keep you busy.

Winter temperatures are still high, but they are more comfortable for city exploration. Bangkok offers plenty of air-conditioned spaces that you can enjoy all year around. It’s one of the reasons why locals enjoy hanging out in shopping malls there.

However, if you would like to see the likes of the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, this time of the year will make your visit more pleasant. I recommend heading to these attractions early in the morning. The heat and the crowds in the afternoon can still be exhausting.

Thailand’s biggest and most popular island really comes to its own in the winter season. Famous for its stunning beaches and relax vibe, the dry season is the time when you can make the most of Phuket’s natural wonders.

Although the island has a reputation for overtourism and overdevelopment, there are still plenty of locations where you can enjoy relatively untouched beaches with hardly any people in sight. Phuket also has a creative and cultural side that you can explore in the charming Phuket Old Town.

One reason why I believe Phuket is a great destination is because it really does offer something for everyone. There are plenty of secluded, luxurious spots for romantic couple getaways , fun activities suitable for the whole family and even a notorious nightlife scene.

Trying to decide between Phuket and the capital? Check out this Phuket vs. Bangkok comparison to decide which destination is right for you.

Koh Yao Noi

For a completely different island experience, I recommend checking out the paradise island of Koh Yao Noi. Located in the Phang Nga Bay, this island is easily accessible by boat from Phuket or Krabi.

Despite its proximity to Phuket, Koh Yao Noi feels completely underdeveloped and a world away from its more famous neighbour. It is the perfect destination for a truly relaxing, quiet break.

Visitors to Koh Yao Noi can enjoy bike rides around the island, incredible beaches without the crowds and simply take in a slower pace of life. It is also a great base for hiring a longtail boat and exploring the surrounding islands.

You can visit Koh Yao Noi as part of island-hopping day trips. However, to really appreciate what the island has to offer, I recommend spending a few days there.

Koh Yao Noi is home to a selection of accommodation that cater to all tastes, from rustic beach bungalows to uber luxurious resorts.

What’s the Coldest Place in Thailand?

You will find the coldest regions of Thailand in the mountainous north of the country. Sakon Nakhon, a city located in the northeastern region of Isan, is considered the coldest part of Thailand. In 1974, it experienced a record-low temperature of -1.4°C (34°F).

However, don’t pack your winter jacket just yet. Below freezing temperatures are not common there. Sakon Nakhon sees average low temperatures of 16°C (60°F) and average highs of 30°C (86°F) during the winter season.

Another cold (by Thai standards) destination is the Doi Inthanon National Park. It is located in the northwest of Thailand and is accessible from Chiang Mai. The area covered by the park is part of the Himalayan Mountain range and is home to Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand.

Due to the park’s high elevation, average temperatures can range between 6°C (43°F) in January and 35°C (95°F) in April. You will find that it’s colder at the peak. In 2017, the park supposedly experienced a low of -5°C (23 °F), but this hasn’t been independently verified.

What to Wear in Thailand in Winter?

Don’t worry, you can leave your puffer jacket at home when you’re travelling to Thailand in winter. Your regular summer clothes will suffice. Just make sure to pack your swimming gear if you’re planning on hitting the beaches.

I would also recommend packing a long-sleeved top that covers your shoulders and a long skirt or a pair of light trousers if you would like to visit local temples. These have a modest dress code, so you won’t be allowed in if your outfit is not appropriate. You can often buy or rent a sarong at the entrance to temples though.

It goes without saying that those looking to hike in the jungle should pack appropriate footwear. It’s not a good idea to wear flip flops there. Thankfully, nowadays you can buy specialised hiking sandals if the idea of wearing hiking boots doesn’t seem particularly appealing.

Final Thoughts

Hope you’ve found this guide to winter and snow in Thailand useful. The Land of Smiles is not a destination for those looking for a winter wonderland as it doesn’t snow there thanks to the country’s tropical climate.

Instead, Thailand is the perfect destination for those looking for winter sun . The northern hemisphere winter is the best time to go to Thailand to enjoy high temperatures and sunny days. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the cold, so Thailand is the place for me.

If you are still wondering whether Thailand is worth visiting, check out this guide to the best reasons why this country should be on your bucket list.

FAQs: Does It Snow in Thailand?

No, just like other parts of Thailand, Bangkok enjoys a tropical climate, so it doesn’t snow there.

No, it doesn’t snow in Chiang Mai. However, the city does occasionally see hailstorms. Hailstones sometimes end up lying on the ground, looking a little bit like a dusting of snow.

No, Thailand is now a skiing destination. However, if you would really like to enjoy this sport while visiting the country, head to Ski36, an indoor snow sports centre in Bangkok.

Winter in Thailand – Where To Visit?

  • October 9, 2022

winterinthailand-wheretovisit

Thailand is known for its hot weather, but in reality, there are some cool comfortable months which most locals regard as “winter”. The end of the rainy season starts a transition into winter, which runs from November to February – one of the best times of the year to visit Thailand. Getting around is more comfortable and it also coincides with the prime holiday season with lots of activities and events around the country.

Here are 4 places you must visit during the winter season in Thailand.

#1 Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai

travel thailand winter

Doi Inthanon is Thailand’s tallest mountain and home to some of Thailand’s most spectacular waterfalls and landscapes, including Thailand’s highest point at 2565m above sea level, where there is cold weather all year round. This is one of the compulsory spots on the mountain too. Do not worry about having to overcome high treacherous steps as the ascent has been known to be relatively straightforward.

travel thailand winter

After visiting The Highest Spot in Thailand, go for a boardwalk at Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail, just below the summit. It is only 400m in length and the moss-covered forest makes you feel as if you stepped into another dimension. To complete the whole Doi Inthanon experience, visit the Twin Royal Pagodas of Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Naphapholphumisiri and also Wachirathan Waterfall.

travel thailand winter

#2 Phu Chi Fah, Chiang Rai

travel thailand winter

Phu Chi Fah is a hidden gem in Chiang Rai which you must visit. Close to the border of Laos, it is home to one of the most beautiful sunrises you will ever see in your life. Though Phu Chi Fah is well-known among Thais, it is still considered off-the-radar for most international travelers. You will not want to be the one who missed out.

travel thailand winter

Phu Chi Fah translates to “the mountain that points to the sky” and the best time to catch its magnificent view is during sunrise. Once you have climbed to the summit, you could find yourself standing above the famous sea of fog, where you will be catching sunrise above the clouds!

#3 Khao Kho, Phetchabun

travel thailand winter

Known as the enchanting misty town of Thailand, Khao Kho is the perfect vacation spot for those longing for a respite away from the bustling city. With scenic mountainous views and chilly weather all year-round, the peaceful ambience of clouds overlooking the lush green landscape sets the scene for visitors to capture stunning pictures and enjoy scrumptious meals with a view. To get to Phetchabun via plane, the nearest airport for Phetchabun is Phitsanulok Airport.

travel thailand winter

#4 Khao Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima

travel thailand winter

Closer to Bangkok and just a 2.5-hour drive away is Khao Yai – the ultimate go-to weekend getaway for many locals because of the numerous Instagram-worthy photo spots. With a long list of chic and iconic cafes, lodges and eateries, it’s obvious that Khao Yai knows the way to the hip millennials’ heart.

travel thailand winter

Khao Yai is also famous for its National Park. Established in 1962 as Thailand’s first National Park, it is currently the third largest National Park in Thailand and attracts regular visitors due to the relative ease to spot a number of interesting animals. Khao Yai is part of Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO, covering 5 protected areas from Khao Yai to the Cambodian border.

Does It Snow In Thailand: How’s Winter In Thailand?

Photo of author

This website uses affiliate links. For more information, click here .

If you are planning a trip to the Southeast Asian country of Thailand in winter, you might wonder “Does it snow in Thailand?” Though Thailand is known for its tropical climate, sunny sandy beaches, and warm weather all year round, it is a massive country with plenty of microclimates and various elevations.

With the recent climate change and Thailand’s weather patterns, is it possible to snow in Thailand?

Below we’ll talk about if there is snow in Thailand, how is Thailand in winter, temperatures, and other essential information that you’ll need to plan the perfect winter getaway to Thailand!

Does It Snow In Thailand?

Pai-Sunset-Thailand

No, it does not snow in Thailand. Because of Thailand’s tropical climate and its geographical location near the equator, Thailand is very unlikely to see snow. Even in the winter, the temperature rarely drops below freezing, making it difficult to form snow.

The humid and warmer temperature make snowy weather impossible, especially if you are in Southern Thailand. If you are planning a trip to Thailand in the winter months, know that you’ll most likely not see snow.

However, the northern parts of Thailand are generally much cooler in winter because of its high elevation. The temperatures can drop to single digits Celcius (<50 F), and even close to freezing at night.

If you are planning to visit those mountainous areas in the northern parts of Thailand (such as Pai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai), make sure you pack something warm.

When Is Winter In Thailand?

Ban-Rak-Thai-Town

Winter in Thailand is typically from late November to February, and the temperature in most places starts dropping around October.

Though typically speaking, because Thailand is a humid and tropical country, there is no “winter season” in Thailand.

Matter of fact, Thailand doesn’t have the four seasons you would typically expect. There are only three seasons in Thailand: the hot season (March to June), the rainy season (July to October), and the cool season (November to February).

Has It Ever Snowed In Thailand?

Thailand-Snow-1955-Newspaper

In the history of Thailand, there was only one officially recorded case of snow. In the winter of 1955, the mountainous province of Chiang Rai experienced the country’s first and only snowfall. On that day, heavy rain turned into snowy hail, which left a thin blanket of white snow on the ground for 14 hours.

There is quite a bit of debate as to whether that is legit snow by definition, or more like hail. But according to the photos, there was a blanket of white snow on the ground. The lowest recorded temperature of Chiang Rai is also 2 C, which is definitely cold enough to produce some snow.

Could it snow again in Thailand? Most definitely. With the recent climate changes and unpredictable weather patterns, it is totally possible to see snow in Thailand once again, especially in the northern regions with higher elevations.

What Are The Best Places To Visit In Thailand In Winter?

Generally speaking, the best places to visit in Thailand in winter are the places that are too hot in the summer. In the summer, the temperatures can go above 35 C or 95 F. Along with the high humidity, it can be too hot to go sightseeing in Thailand in the summer.

That is why winter is one of the best places to visit Thailand, but only certain destinations that remain warm. Here are the best places to visit in winter in Thailand:

Southern Thailand

Southern Thailand generally experiences less temperature fluctuation in winter thanks to its higher humidity and proximity to various bodies of water.

Koh-Samui-Secluded-Beach

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island. Lying in the Gulf of Thailand, this island is full of lush landscapes dotted with waterfalls and pristine white sand beaches. The cooler temperature in winter means you can explore the nature of Koh Samui without getting too hot.

Koh Pha Ngan

Full-Moon-Party-Koh-PhaNgan

Located a short ferry ride from Koh Samui is Koh Pha Ngan, another one of Thailand’s most popular islands. This island also features gorgeous green landscapes with waterfalls, nice beaches, and amazing turquoise waters for swimming.

However, Koh Pha Ngan is most famous for the legendary full-moon party that occurs on Haad Rin Beach every full moon. In the winter, the temperature is perfect for dancing and partying all night long!

There are also plenty of stunning beaches in Koh Pha Ngan for swimming in the warm waters or relaxing on the soft sand!

Kamala-Beach-Phuket

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand and sits on the gorgeous Andaman Sea. With its picturesque beaches, limestone cliffs, and lush rainforests, Phuket is a great place to experience the beauty of nature in winter.

Popular attractions in Phuket include island hopping, partying hard on Bangla Road in Patong Beach, and generally enjoying its world-class beaches. The beaches in Phuket are some of the best we’ve seen in Thailand. If you are a beach-lover, make sure to add Phuket to your Thailand itinerary .

Top Tip: For beaches in Phuket, don’t miss Kata Beach, Karon Beach, and the secluded Freedom Beach.

Phuket is also a great place to visit in Thailand with families, as there are plenty of kids-friendly attractions (such as elephant sanctuaries and FantaSea), even in the winter!

Emerald-Pool-Near-Krabi

Located a few hours drive from Phuket is Krabi, a province sitting on Thailand’s west coast. This area is known for its sheer limestone cliffs and numerous offshore islands that make for the perfect day trip.

Ao Nang is a popular place for people to stay, as it gives travelers access to some of the region’s most iconic attractions, such as Phi Phi Islands, Railay Beach, Tiger Cave Temple, and more. The cooler weather in the winter is perfect for exploring those places.

Party-Khao-San-Road

The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is one of the best places to visit in Thailand in winter. During this season, the temperature is much more tolerable for exploring the city on foot. Daily high temperatures are around 32 C or 90°F, and rarely fall below 28 C or 83 F.

Whether you are exploring the Grand Palace, checking out the Weekend Chatuchak Market, or partying on Khao San Road, you are going to love the cooler temperatures. Like most of southern Thailand, the temperature hardly fluctuates in Bangkok, even in the winter.

If this is your first time in Thailand , don’t forget to add Bangkok to your itinerary!

Chiang-Mai-Moat

The Northern province of Chiang Mai is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand and sits amongst dramatic mountain scenery. The city itself is home to 117 Buddhist temples, all with significance to the Thai locals. As a result, the city is being nominated for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Chiang Mai is also a great place to tick off one of Thailand’s bucket list – visiting an elephant sanctuary.

In the daytime, the weather is dry and cool, perfect for exploring the outdoors and the city’s many temples. However, visitors should pack a light jacket for nighttime, as the temperature can drop considerably.

If you are visiting Doi Inthanon National Park, home to the highest peak in Thailand (at 2,565 meters above sea level), then you’ll want to pack something really warm. It is very windy up there and it is also where the coldest temperature ever recorded.

How Cold Is Winter In Thailand?

Pai-Canyon-Cliffs

Generally speaking, winter in Thailand is not cold thanks to its predominantly tropical climate. However, it is worth noting that Thailand encompasses a variety of microclimates and geographical terrains. The temperature and weather pattern can fluctuate quite a bit depending on where you are in the country.

For example, in the popular backpacker town of Pai in northern Thailand, there were days in December when the temperature dropped to single digits Celcius (<50 F). But in Bangkok, the temperature hardly drops below 20 C (68 F).

The coldest recorded temperature in Thailand was -1.4 C (30 F) in Sakon Nakhon, a mountainous province in the northeastern part of the country. It happened in 1974 so it has been a while since Thailand got this cold!

Here are the average temperatures you can expect in a Thai winter form popular destinations in the country:

Note that the table above is the average winter temperature. This means the average temperature was taken from November, December, January and February. It is also worth noting that the air temperature might vary with the reported temperature because of the humidity, wind chill, cloud cover and other factors.

Thailand In November

November is officially the beginning of winter in Thailand. This is the time of the year when you can experience a steady decline in temperature, especially in the regions of higher elevation. Many travelers find that the temperature is more suitable for exploring the outdoors, so expect more people in the National Parks and Islands.

November is also the start of the peak tourist season, and travelers should plan accordingly when visiting during this time of the year, especially if they are traveling around Thanksgiving.

Thailand in December

December is one of the most busiest months in Thailand. Thanks to the holiday seasons, the streets of Thailand are packed with tourists, out to enjoy the warm temperatures that they normally wouldn’t get back home.

Temperature in December is usually much cooler compared to November, especially up in the mountains. You’ll need to pack warm layers if you plan on visiting the northern regions of Thailand.

Thailand In January

January is the heart of the cool season in Thailand. This is when you’ll see some of the lowest temepratures in the entire year. Though the temperatures are lower, they remain relatively warm if you are in the South.

People still swim in the sea and seek refuge from the heat, especially in the middle of the day. Though the days are some of the shortest in the entire year, travelers can expect dry weather with little cloud cover. It is one of the best times to visit Thailand, especially since the December holiday crowd has gone.

Thailand in February

Late February usually marks the end of winter in Thailand. Starting late February, the temperature starts to rise, and by April, the temperatures have soared to some of the highest in the year.

This is the last opportnity for tourists to enjoy mild temperatures and dry clear skies.

Is Winter In Thailand A Good Time To Visit?

Khao Sok National Park

Winter is one of the best times to visit Thailand. Because the summers in Thailand are debilitatingly hot, visitors actually don’t get to do a lot of sightseeing during the warmer months. But in winter, the temperatures are cooler, so walking around the city in the middle of the day is pleasant. Plus, the sea temperature is still warm enough for a relaxing swim!

Matter of fact, November to February is considered the peak tourist season in Thailand. Along with the cooler temperatures, you’ll hardly see any precipitation, meaning your Thailand itinerary is unlikely to get interrupted.

Our recommendation is to stay away from the northern parts of Thailand if you are looking for something warm! And if you are visiting the southern parts, make sure you book your accommodations and activities in advance!

What To Wear In Thailand In Winter?

Thailand-In-Winter-What-To-Wear

Since Thailand is still relatively quite warm in the winter, you won’t need to wear any bulky clothing. In the daytime, you can get around with just a T-shirt and some shorts. But at night, you might want a light jacket or a cardigan to keep you warm in the chillier evenings.

If you are visiting northern Thailand where the winter is a bit cooler, you’ll most likely need long pants and layers. During the day, you might still be able to get by with a T-shirt and some shorts, but you’ll definitely want something warm at night.

The locals in Thailand typically dress quite modestly. Make sure you bring a few sets of clothes that cover your knees and shoulders so you can enter the temples! There is a dress code for them!

The Best Time To Visit Thailand For Great Weather, Low Prices, And Fun Festivals

Discover the best times to visit thailand for great weather, low prices, fun festivals, and island-hopping among other activities..

The Best Time To Visit Thailand For Great Weather, Low Prices, And Fun Festivals

Thailand is one of the most accessible and well-loved travel destinations in Southeast Asia. It’s a great place to visit any time of year, but if you’re looking to hit the beach, you’ll want to book a trip for some time during the dry, sunny season between November and early April. Weather can vary throughout the year, and crowds and prices fluctuate accordingly.

“Thailand is a tropical country with two distinct seasons,” said Jack Tydeman, a member of T+L’s A-List of travel advisors and the Southeast Asia senior specialist at Audley Travel . “It is typically warm all year round. However, the winter months from November through March are the peak dry season and are considered the best time to travel to the majority of the country. April is the hottest month in Thailand before the country moves into the wetter season from May through October.”

These are Thailand’s three travel seasons:

  • High: November to March
  • Shoulder: April to June and the month of October
  • Low: July to September

One caveat is that Thailand is a big country stretching more than 1,000 miles (1,609.34 km) from north to south, so conditions will also depend on where you are. For example, November marks the beginning of the sunny high season on the Andaman coast, but also the start of the monsoon season on the Gulf side.

So, before you book your jungle tree house and island boat tour, read on for the best times to go to Thailand.

The best times to visit Thailand

The best times to visit thailand for great weather.

travel thailand winter

For ideal weather, visit Thailand during the dry season, which for most of the country kicks off in November and lasts through March or even into April and May. A major exception is the Lower Gulf — home to the island paradises of Koh Samui , Ko Pha-ngan, and Koh Tao — which is rainiest from September through December.

On the Andaman coast, November to February has the coolest, most comfortable weather, with average temps in the 80s and little chance of rain. This means clear, blue waters and gorgeous scenery that’s lush from the previous monsoon season. On top of perfect weather, this time of year sees major Thai festivals and the Western Christmas and New Year holidays, so you’re also looking at Thailand’s biggest crowds and highest prices. Time your trip for early November and you might just beat the throngs.

As for the low season, it’s best to temper your expectations. “It is possible to travel over the summer months. However, you may see some short, sharp showers,” he said. “As the east coast of Thailand has its own unique weather patterns, summer is actually the drier season there.”

The best times to visit Thailand for low prices

Thailand is a relatively affordable destination throughout the year, though travellers may find the steepest discounts on flights, accommodations, and tours during the low/monsoon season (July to September).

“The low season does have its advantages, as it’s quieter and the rates are typically lower. This makes Thailand a great value destination during the summer ,” said Tydeman. “However, some months are hotter and some are wetter. As Thailand is in a tropical region, the rains tend to be short, sharp showers for most of the country. Summer is now commonly referred to as ‘green season’ due to the rains turning the countryside green and filling the rivers and waterfalls.”

Naturally, visiting during the wet season is a gamble. Rains could come in brief cloudbursts, or they could come in days-long downpours that affect boat service and island access. July brings more summer tourists and August tends to see cloudy skies and regular heavy rainfall. September is the wettest and least crowded month. To split the difference, consider visiting during the shoulder season (April through June, or October), when rains are generally of the brief afternoon storm variety.

Travelers should try to experience at least one of Thailand’s many festivals, which celebrate everything from flowers and fruit to monkeys and elephants.

Two of the most beloved are the late-November Lantern Festivals: Yi Peng, during which participants release thousands of rice-paper lanterns into the sky; and Loy Krathong, for which Thais create banana-leaf baskets, fill them with flowers and burning candles, and release them onto lakes, rivers, and canals. Chiang Mai is the Yi Peng epicentre (tourists can participate with ticketed entry, starting at around USD 130/THB 4,541) and Loy Krathong is celebrated across the country.

The Chinese New Year in January or February turns Bangkok’s Chinatown into a sea of dragons, drummers, worshippers, and visitors, all under the glow of firecrackers and red lanterns. Also in February is the three-day Flower Festival in Chiang Mai, which culminates with a parade of elaborate floats painstakingly decorated with chrysanthemums, damask roses, and other varieties.

Songkran (a.k.a. Water Splashing Festival) ushers in the Thai New Year in mid-April with parades, parties, and performances across the country. “Songkran turns Thailand into one big water fight,” said Tydeman. “It also coincides with the hottest month of the year, so it’s a perfect excuse to get wet.”

The Vegetarian Festival takes place in late September or early October and commemorates a nine-day abstinence from meat in honour of the Nine Emperor Gods of Taoism.

Divers from all over the world flock to Thailand to explore the country’s famous underwater sites and stunning marine parks. Thailand’s east coast is largely dive-friendly throughout the year. If you plan an excursion to the Andaman Sea — home to the extraordinary Similan and Surin Islands — time the trip between November and April when the seas are calm and visibility is clearest. Also, keep in mind that Similan and Surin marine parks close from mid-May to mid-October.

The best times to visit Thailand for Island-hopping

Boating from one jungle-topped limestone island to another is a great way to explore Thailand, but downpours between May and October can put the kibosh on nautical fun. Some southern Andaman resorts are even closed for the rainy season.

“The islands off the west coast, like Phuket, are best to visit in the winter months, whereas the islands off the east coast, like Koh Samui, are great to visit in the summer,” said Tydeman.

This means you should time your bouncing around Phuket , the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, and other Andaman isles between late October (when the rains taper off) and May or June. Ko Lanta is effectively closed during the monsoon season — you may be able to get there, but accommodation options are seriously limited. Conversely, Gulf of Thailand idylls Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Ko Pha-Ngan are at their rainiest and windiest between October and December.

If you want to avoid the crowds, keep in mind that students from Australia and Europe flock to Thailand’s islands in June and July to work and party during their summer breaks.

No matter what time of year you visit Thailand, try to fit in at least one weekend in Bangkok so you can experience the vast Chatuchak Weekend Market , open from 9 am – 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. In fact, most of the stalls are covered, so you can visit even on a rainy day.

Tydeman also recommended visiting Bangkok’s night markets , which offer “everything from original artwork and designer bags to kitschy souvenirs and secondhand books.”

Chiang Mai’s weekend markets deserve a look as well. Every Saturday night, Wua Lai Road (just south of the Old City) closes to traffic and hosts hundreds of silversmiths, wood carvers, clothing purveyors, sketch artists, and performing musicians. On Sundays, the scene essentially repeats itself along the length of Ratchadamnoen Road, which bustles with artisans, food vendors, and massage stations.

The Worst Times to Visit Thailand

Avoiding the hot season if possible.

Thailand's hot season, from April to June, brings soaring temperatures and intense humidity, peaking in April and May at over 40°C (104°F). If you're not a fan of the heat, be sure to avoid those months.

Tips for Travelling during the Hot Season:

  • Explore northern regions like Chiang Mai, where the climate is generally cooler compared to the southern parts of the country.
  • Engage in water-based activities to cool off, such as visiting coastal areas or islands.

Avoiding the Rainy Season If Possible

While the rainy season (July to October) graces Thailand with lush landscapes, it also brings short afternoon showers and potential disruptions due to monsoons and storms.

However, you can revel in the perks of serene locales with fewer crowds and attractive prices.

Tips for Travelling the Rainy Season:

  • Explore eastern and northern regions during the rainy season, as they typically receive less rainfall compared to the southern areas.
  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan indoor activities on days when rain is expected.
  • Consider the sun-kissed beauty of Bali as a radiant alternative when Thailand is drenched in rain.

Thailand Weather in January: Nice Weather

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 15–25°C (59–77°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–32°C (79–89°F)

January offers great weather conditions, whether for city sightseeing or beach holidays.

It is a popular tourist season in Thailand, especially in tourist hotspots, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Koh Samui. Expect larger crowds at popular attractions and book accommodations in advance.

Events and Festivals

The key festival, when it is in January, Chinese New Year, is celebrated right across the country, especially in Bangkok's Chinatown.

Suggested read: Thailand in January: the top 5 places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in February: Nice Weather

Similar to the weather of January, February's weather is still nice, warm, and dry.

Good weather means almost anywhere is a good place to plan your holiday.

Beautiful islands and beaches are also good places to go — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak... All kinds of water activities enjoy ideal conditions.

Thailand Weather in March: The Heat Builds

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 20–30°C (68–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–35°C (82–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 28–34°C (82–93°F)

March is still a fabulous month to visit Thailand, especially in the first half of the month, though it starts to heat up in March. It's advisable to stay hydrated, especially in the central region with warmer temperatures.

During this season, you can go literally anywhere in Thailand thanks to the low rainfall. Water-related activities in the southern islands are enjoyable.

Suggested read: Thailand in March: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in April: Hottest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–35°C (77–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (86–97°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

April is the hottest month in Thailand. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day and night!

The heat in Chiang Mai during April gets even more oppressive than in Bangkok. Chiang Rai is slightly cooler by 1 or 2°C but is still hot nonetheless.

For beach lovers, you are almost guaranteed some blue skies and clear seas. Staying in a beach resort will be at least 4 or 5°C cooler than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Festivals and Events

Thai New Year (Songkran Festival) is the biggest, longest, and most enjoyable festival in Thailand. It is a 3-day-long water fight that takes place throughout the country!

Suggested read: Thailand in April: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in May: The Rains Start

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 31–36°C (88–97°F)

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

May sees the end of the high season, which means that prices on hotels and flights begin to drop, bringing great value for visitors.

Suggested read: Thailand in May: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in June: Wet and Hot

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–38°C (82–100°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (84–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Thailand can expect an average of 15 to 22 days of rain in June. However, the rain is usually short-lived, occurring in short bursts in the afternoon or evening.

This tourism low season is the best time to travel to Thailand for prices and quietness, with more choices of accommodation and various different promotions.

For beachgoers, Ko Samui and Hua Hin are the best destinations as they are not so affected by the rains at this time.

Suggested read: Thailand in June: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in July: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–36°C (82–97°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–34°C (82–93°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–32°C (81–89°F)

July experiences heavy rainfall, so be prepared for wet conditions.

The southern islands are affected by the monsoon in July, which brings heavy rains and turbulent waves to the west coast.

However, the east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, etc) experiences fewer showers during this season and has relatively good weather in July. You can still enjoy sunny days at the beach on these islands.

Some urban areas, such as Bangkok, remain hot and wet. Staying refreshed with indoor swimming pool visits and cold showers will help relieve any discomfort.

Suggested read: Thailand in July: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in August: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 27–35°C (81–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Like July, August is one of the best times to visit Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Though there are some brief rains, it is much better than the other side of the peninsula in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, and the Phi Phi Islands.

A trip to Thailand in August can be a cost-effective opportunity to enjoy scenic spots and quiet beaches without the crowds.

Suggested read: Thailand in August: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in September: Wettest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 26–32°C (79–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–31°C (79–88°F)

September is the wettest month in Thailand. But actually, only some rural areas are significantly affected by the rains during the wet season, such as the mountainous north around Chiang Mai.

Destinations like Bangkok offer travelers plenty to do and see, even when it's raining outside. Koh Samui is recommended for beach holidays in September as it is less affected by the rains.

Rains do not disrupt the travel experience too much for some, as it seldom rains all day long.

Suggested read: Thailand in September: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in October: End of the Rains

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 22–30°C (72–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 24–31°C (75–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 25–30°C (77–86°F)

Thailand experiences high or very high rainfall again in October, except in Northern Thailand where the rainy season already tails off to moderate levels.

The monsoon rain eases off with less rainfall and lower temperatures by the end of October in most of Thailand. However, Koh Samui begins its peak rainy season at this time.

Some visitors come to Thailand at the end of October to wait for the annual grand Thailand Lantern Festival in early November. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the main venues.

Suggested read: Thailand in October: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in November: Peak Season Starts

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 18–28°C (64–82°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 23–30°C (73–86°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 24–30°C (75–86°F)

Thailand's peak travel season starts from November. The rains and heat are gone or going from most of the country.

You can venture out without any worries of getting drenched, EXCEPT on the east coast, which receives a massive half a meter of rain in November.

Islands on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Similan Islands, etc.) are ideal places to go, by contrast, with only moderate rainfall.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with low rainfall, are the most popular cities in November for the Thailand Lantern Festivals .

Suggested read: Thailand in November: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in December: Coolest

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

December is a great time to visit most areas in Thailand (Koh Samui is still in rainy season though) and is also the country's busiest month for tourism.

There are celebrations on Christmas and New Year's Eve in Thailand. Shopping malls in Thailand have big sales from late December to early January. If you're planning a trip to Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, try to book as early as possible. Popular hotels are usually booked up 3-6 months in advance.

Visiting Thailand in January – A complete guide

shows an image of long tail boats lined up in Railay beach, Thailand

If you’re reading this article, you might have already planned a trip to Thailand in January, or maybe you’re thinking about paying this wonderful country a visit? The simple answer to the question, ‘is Thailand a good place to visit in January?’ is YES, absolutely! In this guide, we’ll give you all the information you need to know about the weather in January, pool and sea temperatures, how busy Thailand is in January, and some helpful tips and tricks. We hope you find it useful and be sure to leave a comment down below, as we’d love to hear from fellow travellers 😊

Is Thailand a good place to visit in January?

January is one of the most, if not the most popular time to travel to Thailand. Tourists from across the world escape their colder climates and flock to all areas of Thailand at this time of year for the excellent weather and endless activities. If you love lots going on with an upbeat atmosphere, January is the best time for you!

Whilst popular tourist areas Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi at their busiest, there are plenty of events going on at this time of the year and all bars, restaurants and attractions are buzzing. If you’re planning a visit in January, be sure to be as organised as possible and monitor flights closely. Flights can be expensive at this time of the year, so be sure you’re getting a good deal by booking in advance. Hotels are also a little more expensive in January due to high demand, so again, it’s worth booking everything well in advance of arrival.

Positives of visiting Thailand in January:

  • Excellent weather throughout the country. It’s not too hot, nor too cold and rainy.
  • A lively atmosphere with lots going on.
  • Everything is open and you have the freedom to explore the whole country.

Negatives of visiting Thailand in January:

  • Higher prices for accommodation, flights and some activities.
  • High crowd levels

How is Thailand’s weather in January?

January is one of the best months for consistent dry weather throughout Thailand. The country has different climates throughout the year, depending on whether you’re visiting the north, south, Andaman Coast or Gulf of Thailand. January is one of the few months of the year you can visit anywhere in the country and expect little rain and temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius plus.

Whilst the weather remains consistent throughout Thailand in January, it can be a few degrees warmer/cooler in certain areas. If you visit the southern islands, destination such as Krabi, Koh Lanta and Phuket have warmer temperatures and higher humidity. Places in the north of the country, such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, are slightly cooler. This is especially the case if you visit mountainous areas.

Thailand’s weather in January is hot, but not too hot. It’s perfect for those that enjoy warmer climates, though some people may still find it too hot.

Kayaking in Koh Talabeng - Visiting Thailand in January

What’s the average temperature in Thailand in January?

If you love hot weather, you’re in luck as you’ll get plenty of sun in January! Let’s take a look at the temperatures in some of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations.

Bangkok – high 32° /  low 22°

Chiang Mai – high 29° / low 14°

Chiang Rai – high 28° / low 13°

Phuket – high 33° / low 24°

Krabi – 32° / low 21°

As you can see from the above temperatures, places in Northern Thailand such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai see slightly cooler temperatures during the day, dropping considerably during the night. Places down south like Phuket and Krabi are only a few degrees warmer during the day, but temperatures are much higher on an evening compared to the north. Bangkok and Central Thailand enjoy some of the most comfortable temperatures of the year.

Does it rain in Thailand in January?

During the months of November – March, Thailand experiences its ‘dry season.’ There’s little to no rainfall at this time of year, but that doesn’t mean it won’t rain. Thailand has a tropical climate, which means it can rain at any time. If it does rain, it’s usually in short outbursts for no more than an hour at a time. We experienced some heavy rainfall during our recent visit to Krabi in January, but it only lasted 30-minutes.

Top tip: if you’re planning on visiting different areas in Thailand, make sure you pack the right clothing. A rain jacket is always advisable, even when visiting Thailand in January.

What’s the water temperature like in January?

If you’re planning on swimming in the hotel pool, or even taking a dip in the crystal-clear sea, you’re in luck. The water temperatures are a very pleasant 26-28 degrees  during the month of January, perfect for you to take a dip and cool off.

Water temperature in the south is a couple of degrees warmer than the north. Just be aware that pool temperatures if visiting the north of Thailand will be cooler in the morning, but they generally warm up in the afternoon.

What clothing should I pack?

Weather aside, the perfect things to pack for a Thailand January trip will depend on what activities you plan on doing. Thailand is a wonderful country that offers so much more than stunning beaches and delicious street food. It’s a great place for a spot of exploring, hiking and getting up close and personal to its lush countryside and vast jungles. If you’re visiting Thailand for a beach holiday, stick to your usual summer clothes. If you plan on exploring rural areas and hiking, you’ll need a few extra items.

Thailand January packing list:

  • Tops (t-shirts and vests)
  • Shorts (ideally cotton and not denim)
  • Dresses and skirts for women
  • Flip flops (you’ll practically live in flip flops during your time in Thailand)
  • A thin waterproof rain jacket (as it could rain anywhere in the country at any time)
  • A shawl (if you plan on visiting Thailand’s temples, you’ll need to cover up)

If you’re planning on visiting the capital, or venturing out and walking a lot, we recommend also packing:

  • A pair of sturdy walking shoes/ trainers
  • A pair of hiking socks to ensure your ankle don’t rub and are supported.

Additional items to consider that aren’t clothing but we absolutely recommend taking:

  • A camera or Go Pro
  • Mosquito spray (and lots of it!)
  • Charcoal tablets (in-case you consume food with bad bacteria)
  • Water shoes
  • Compact beach towel

Is Thailand busy in January?

As we mentioned earlier, January is the busiest month of the year in Thailand. Tourists from all over the world fly in for the idyllic weather and affordable prices compared to many home countries. We visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta and Krabi in January, and the only place where we felt the mass crowds was in Krabi. As long as you’re prepared to wait a little longer in restaurants and are aware that there’ll be more people on beach islands and tours, you’ll still have a fantastic time.

Top tip: if crowds aren’t your thing, we recommend taking note of the following:

  • Eat out earlier in the evening, around 6pm. That way, you’ll dine before most tourists and guaranteed to get a table.
  • Explore the sights first thing on a morning. If you can, get breakfast and head out straight away, before the tour groups arrive.
  • Avoid going to popular places during the weekend. Locals enjoy taking their families for a long weekend break, so it will be slightly busier Friday – Sunday.
  • Travel outside of the Christmas – New Year and Chinese New Year periods for less crowds.

Is everything open in January?

As it’s Thailand’s peak season in January, everything is open and at full capacity in January. Different places in Thailand have different opening hours. For example, on the tranquil island of Koh Lanta, local businesses may have reduced opening times or days off. In the thriving city metropolis of Bangkok, shops, bars and restaurants may be open around the clock. Be sure to check Google Maps for attraction and restaurant opening times. In general, expect everything to be open as usual in Thailand in January.

Where are the best places to visit in Thailand in January?

With so many wonderful places to choose from in Thailand, it can be hard to decide on where to visit. Some areas are more beautiful than others, but those areas generally attract more tourists, making them much more crowded. We’ve put together a list of areas that are well worth adding to your list.

Hotel recommendation: Lanta Sand Resort & Spa | TripAdvisor rating: 4.5

If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, either as a couple, family or solo backpacker, Koh Lanta is the place for you. An island district in the Krabi province, Koh Lanta has some of the most stunning beaches and untouched island nature you’ll ever see. It’s a great place to wind down, swim in the sea, snorkel and head out on a kayaking adventure. We did a tour to Koh Talabeng and it was the best thing we did in Thailand. Check out our full review and guide here .

Hotel recommendation: Panan Krabi Resort | TripAdvisor rating: 4.5

Another great place to visit in Thailand is the highly popular province of Krabi. Krabi offers incredible beaches, towering limestone cliff scenery, and idyllic white-sand islands. It’s popular amongst any travellers that enjoy hot sunny weather and lots of beach and adventure activities, though it’s less cultural than other areas of Thailand. We stayed in the bustling town of Ao Nang. Yes it’s busy. Yes it’s touristy, but its central location is a great base for seeing Krabi. Expect more crowds than the likes of Koh Lanta.

Hotel recommendation: Siam @ Siam Design Hotel | TripAdvisor rating: 4.5

You can’t visit Thailand without spending at least a few days exploring its capital, Bangkok. It’s a sprawling melting pot that sees over 20 million visitors every year. With its quirky floating markets, excellent night life and magnificent temples, it’s definitely a destination to add to January itinerary. January is one of the best times of the year to explore the city due to comfortable temperatures and low humidity.

Hotel recommendation: BED Chiang Mai Gate | TripAdvisor rating: 5

Last but not least is one for the foodies out there; Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural hub of Thailand, and for good reason! With its delicious food (in particular, the northern dish, Khao Soi) bustling night markets and rural nature activities, it remains our favourite place in the country. Here, you can still expect lots of tourists, especially early January, but it isn’t as packed as the likes of Krabi and Phuket.

shows an image of a temple in Chiang Mai - visiting Thailand in January

You’ll see that we haven’t included the likes of Koh Samui, Phuket and Phi Phi islands. Even though these places have their merit and deserve a place on the Thai tourism map, they can be quite touristic in January and have much higher prices than other destinations.

Our top tips for visiting Thailand in January

  • Ensure you’ve packed all your travel essentials. That includes clothing, medication supplies and any other items you can’t live without. Some items you can find in Thailand, but others you won’t. Be prepared and pack extra just to be on the safe side.
  • Plan ahead. If you’re visiting multiple places in the country, especially by plane, be sure to book your internal flights ahead of time. January is an expensive time of year to travel, so save your pennies and book in advance!
  • Book your accommodation at least one month in advance. You don’t want to be paying over the odds for a hotel. In other months of the year you can turn up to hotels in Thailand and pay on the day. That’s more difficult to do in January.
  • Crowd levels are high in places such as Phuket and Koh Samui. Choose a less visited beach resort or island if you want to avoid the crowds. We recommend the islands of Koh Lanta, Koh Samet or Ko Chang.
  • Local services such as taxis, shops and travel agents may charge more during high season. Compare prices online between companies and negotiate if possible.
  • Unlike many months of the year, January is the month of the year where is excellent across the whole country. Take advantage of this and visit as many places as possible, from north to south.
  • Visit towards the end of the month for less crowds and cheaper prices.
  • Avoid travelling around Chinese New Year if you want to avoid the crowds. That being said, it’s a good time to visit to experience the festivities.
  • If visiting around the start of the month, try to visit after Christmas and before New Year. Chiang Mai and Bangkok have some excellent NYE celebrations that can’t be missed.

This depends on the type of trip you’re looking for. If you want a relaxing beach holiday, we recommend heading to Koh Lanta, Krabi, or a smaller east-coast island destination. If you want to experience Thailand’s culture, we suggest the likes of Chiang Mai, Pai and Central Thailand.

The good news is that the entire country is blessed with fantastic weather in January, so no matter where you visit, you’ll have sunny skies and little rain. Just be mindful that the most popular areas like Phuket and Koh Samui are extremely popular and get really busy in January. They can also be more expensive than other destinations.

Thailand experiences very little rain in January. However, due to its tropical climate, you can expect rain anywhere in Thailand at any time. We experienced a few hours on rainfall in Krabi towards the end of January. If you’re planning any excursions or tours, be sure to check the weather forecast before booking.

Thailand hosts several festivals throughout January. Here are some of the most popular events: Chinese New Year Chinese New Year is highly celebrated in Thailand and takes place during the months of January and February. There are multiple events celebrating Chinese New Year throughout the entire country, but the most popular events are held in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Koh Samui and Phuket. Chiang Mai Lantern Festival – New Year Even though the New Year Lantern Festival held in Chiang Mai starts on the 31 st December, it’s technically January when it ends, right? We visited the famous Chiang Mai Lantern Festival to see in the New Year and the experience and atmosphere was electric. Grab your very own lantern and make a wish, then send it off into the sky!   Bangkok New Year’s Eve Fireworks Another big event that starts in January but technically ends in January is the Bangkok city firework display. Bangkok is a great place to welcome the new year, especially if you book a rooftop party. There’s a lot going on throughout Bangkok on NYE, with options for every budget.

Thank you for reading our guide on visiting Thailand in January. In our opinion, you can visit the country year-round and still have a great time. However, January is a particularly excellent month for all of the reasons we’ve mentioned. It’s one of our favourite times of year to visit, and even though the country is packed full of tourists, it never feels overly busy. We hope you enjoyed reading! Be sure to let us know your thoughts on visiting Thailand in January in the comment section below.

Thailand: This paradise city is the favourite winter holiday destination for French people

In the heart of South-East Asia, between age-old traditions and dazzling modernity, Bangkok is a treasure with a thousand faces. A bewitching metropolis where the bustle of the floating markets, the serene golden temples and the lively districts all come together.

With the February 2024 national holidays fast approaching, French people are getting ready to run off to faraway countries to escape the daily grind. Of the French’s preferred destinations this winter, Bangkok tops the list, cementing its status as the undisputed leader for winter holidays. According to a recent study by Liligo, partnering with the polling organisation OpinionWay, the mild temperatures and change of scenery in the Thai capital attract travellers hoping for some adventure and sunshine.

Winter holidays 2024: Bangkok, Thailand, the French’s favourite destination

Last year, Bangkok was already one of the most popular destinations, and this trend is set to grow further in 2024. The growing appeal of far-flung destinations is also evident in changes to the rankings. Phuket, famous for its sandy beaches and turquoise waters, reached the top 10, ejecting Rome from the list. This rise in popularity may be partly explained, by significant price cuts for a round-trip ticket to Phuket.

This growing trend favouring the Asian continent is part of a wider change in French travel habits, as revealed by Liligo’s study: 6% of French people have expressed an interest in travelling to Asia, and this region’s appeal keeps on growing since the post-Covid recovery. However, domestic destinations remain a firm favourite among French holidaymakers. Cities such as Marrake sh and Lisbon retain their places in the top 10 of favourite destinations. Marrakesh, in third place, remains an affordable pick, while Lisbon, despite a 15% price inflation since 2023, stays in sixth place.

Top 10 favourite winter holiday destinations for the French in 2024

Whether it’s an exotic escapade on the Asian continent or a trip to explore the charms of Europe, the French will use their 2024 winter holidays to go seek adventure and discovery all around the world.

Water guns are in full blast to mark Thai New Year festivities despite worries about heat wave

It’s water festival time in Thailand where many are marking the country’s traditional New Year, splashing each other with colorful water guns and buckets in an often raucous celebration that draws thousands of people, even as this year the Southeast Asian nation marks record-high temperatures causing concern.

The festival, known as Songkran in Thailand, is a three-day shindig that starts Saturday and informally extends for a whole week, allowing people to travel for family celebrations. The holiday is also celebrated under different names in neighboring Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, which like Thailand have populations that are predominantly Theravada Buddhist.

Songkran is immensely popular — predicted this year to attract more than 500,000 foreign tourists and generate more than 24 billion baht ($655 million) in revenue, according to the state tourism agency. Past Thai governments have been reluctant to call for dialing down the fun even during crises such as droughts and the pandemic

Though the festival originated as a way to pray for a rainy season that helped crops and included activities such as cleansing images of the Buddha and washing the hands and feet of elders, Songkran these days is now often associated with public drunkenness, sexual assault in the guise of merrymaking, and a spike in traffic fatalities, noticeable to the point that the extended holiday has been dubbed the “seven dangerous days.”

The festival usually falls at the hottest time of the year when temperatures can creep above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

But this year, the unusual heat wave, with expected record temperatures for the next few months, has triggered apprehension. The United Nations Children’s Fund warned Thursday the sweltering weather could put millions of children’s lives at risk, asking caregivers to take extra precautions.

The UNICEF statement said in the Asia-Pacific region, “around 243 million children are exposed to hotter and longer heatwaves, putting them at risk of a multitude of heat-related illnesses, and even death.”

Heat waves can be lethal as they affect the ability to breathe, making the old and young particularly vulnerable.

Benjamin Horton, director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore where natural phenomena such as climate change are studied, said three factors determine heat waves; El Nino, a natural, temporary and occasional warming of part of the Pacific, an increase in global temperatures and human-induced climate change .

The poor are particularly vulnerable to heat waves, exacerbated in many Southeast Asian cities where concrete buildings make the weather more stifling and few trees provide shade, he said.

Horton added that the past year saw record-high global average temperatures and the heat waves in Southeast Asia were mirroring that trend, adding that “it is only going to get worse.”

The entirety of the Mekong Delta, which includes Vietnam as well as Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, saw extreme heat, with parts of Laos and Thailand seeing temperatures that were 5-7 degrees Celsius (41-44.6 degrees Fahrenheit) more than the average between April 3-9, according to the Mekong Dam Monitor program of the Stimson Center in Washington D.C.

This extreme heat also means less water for hydropower dams to produce energy.

“Heat waves put a significant strain on power systems, from surging energy demand to compromising grid capacity. Hydropower generation is particularly impacted” when heat results in drought over multiple years, according to Dimitri Pescia, director for Southeast Asia at the German-based thinktank Agora Energiewende

“The cumulative effects, amplified by climate change, cause great distress to society and ecosystems,” he said.

Singapore’s Horton said earth-warming carbon emissions needed a drastic cutting down as people learned to adapt to the new climate which included learning the dangers of overly hot weather and for authorities to create an emergency response to warn people about high temperatures beforehand and provide them with areas to cool down when needed.

Last week, the Philippines suspended classes in more than 5,800 public schools and shifted to home-based and online learning to protect millions of students from the scorching heat.

Schools in several cities, including the congested capital Manila, shifted classes to early morning to avoid sweltering noontime and afternoon temperatures. Also, tens of thousands of students in grade and high schools were allowed to alternate between going to school and online classes every other day, officials said.

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, a medical doctor, said they have limited outdoor activities especially if the heat index rises to an extreme level. “If people don’t have urgent tasks outside, the best precaution really is to stay indoors.”

Associated Press writers Sopheng Cheang in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Jim Gomez in Manila, Philippines contributed to this report. Asia Business Climate correspondent Aniruddha Ghosal reported from Hanoi, Vietnam.
