About This Winery
Hall St. Helena Winery, a historic Napa Valley winery originally founded in 1885 as Bergfeld Winery, was long known as the Napa Valley Co-op, and was one of the primary winemaking facilities in Napa for much of the last century. Today, a redesigned visitor center and tasting room welcome visitors with warmth and elegance.
Guests to the winery can sample the portfolio of HALL wines, relax in arbor-covered courtyards and take in original works of modern art and sculpture from the Halls’ personal collection. Future plans for the winery include restoring the historic buildings on the grounds and developing a spectacular visitor center.
A huge sculpture standing well over ten feet tall guides you to the tasting room entrance. Once inside, don’t forget to look upward at the commissioned blown-glass sculpture “Red Rain” (stylized Cabernet drops) that graces the redwood interior. The wine production focus is on Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, with three versions currently available. Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc round out the winery’s limited production.
A VIP program guides you through the winery grounds, tasting the current releases and visiting the historic Bergfeld Winery, where you will sample wines still in the barrel. Advance reservations are required, and the fee is $20 per guest. The Halls also have a facility in Rutherford available for tours and tasting, also by reservation only.

- Spring/Summer: sundress, denim, skirts, blouses, and sandals. For men- Golf attire and button-down shirts, denim, and closed-toed shoes. Add accessories for a pop of fun!
- Fall/Winter : Denim, sweater, and boots.
- Flats or wedges: when visiting wineries, there is often a lot of walking around outdoors on unpaved surfaces. Be safe and wear low wedges or flats.
- If you want to dress like a local vintner, bring a vest. If you don’t have one, not to worry head to Sportago where they have plenty of colors and sizes to choose from.

HALL Wines Vineyard Information
Kathryn Hall, HALL Wines owner, grew up working in her family’s vineyards in Mendocino. Now, she and her husband Craig have created their own Napa Valley vineyard experience with HALL Wines.
In 2003, Craig and Kathryn Hall acquired the St. Helena Bergfeld Winery, reopening it as HALL St. Helena later that year.
The Halls would later restore the 1885 winery, completing it in 2013, making it California’s first LEED® Gold Certified winery.
Not content to rest on their laurels with this already impressive feat, they added HALL Rutherford in the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard.
With both locations, HALL Wines’ beautiful vineyards are deeply rooted in a commitment to the environment while engaging cutting-edge technology in the vineyards for the best quality in grapes, making each a wonderful place to explore extraordinary wines.

One of the best wine tasting experiences I've ever had was with Ray during the HALLmark Tour & Tasting! I've been tasting all over California and Ray's knowledge about the science behind wine was so valuable to me. Not only did I learn about what makes HALL so special, I learned about the art on the property and universal knowledge about how I interact with wine on a day to day basis. The wines here are AMAZING! My aunt and uncle are devoted members to this winery because of the impeccable wines, and Ray leading us through the tour really reaffirmed this for me. It was my first time visiting the winery and I now know why they always talk so highly of this place. Thank you Ray for creating a fun introduction to the winery for me and thank you HALL for valuing fine art on the beautiful property.

We came here for the Cabernet Sauvignon tasting. Pairings with the tasting in the photo, left to right: Manchego cheese, beet tartare, fried grapes with whipped ricotta on polenta cracker, duck rillette, leek tart, and goat cheese panna cotta. It was not too crowded when we came on a weekday, so the service was attentive and highly educational. This winery is a beautiful space and worth a visit.
Cabernet Sauvignon tasting.
Enjoyed a tasting experience at HALL during our Napa trip. Short Version: Very cool estate and love all their detail to art. Wine was nice, but our line up on this specific tasting was very similar to each other, so left a little to be desired. Though the service was friendly, our tour/wine guide also left a little to be desired. The detailed version: I am very glad I got to check out this estate and enjoy their tasting experience. They really do put a lot of thought and funny humor into their art pieces all across the estate. The history involved, is also very cool. Our guide, though friendly, did not really explain the lay of the land. We first to check in and directed towards her, upon arrival, she simply handed us glasses and poured some wine. She didn't let us know we were waiting for other guests, what the tour would entail or really any details or greeting. Once the rest of the guests arrived, we departed for a tour of the vineyard. Out group size ended up being about 15-18 total people, not exclusive, but also not too large. After checking out the space and enjoying our white, apparently one of the only ones they have, we were led to our tasting room. They had a lovely arrangement of cheeses, nuts, crackers and meats to pari, but no notes on the wine we would be tasting or even a menu. The only thing laid out was their ordering brochure. It would have been so nice to have had a menu laid out of the wines we would be tasting, along with some general tasting notes, but instead we just were told and given a few small details. It was a beautiful property and I did enjoy my experience and it was well worth a visit, but I am not sure I would explore a return visit.
Had an amazing day here with my husband and brothers. It's such a beautiful property with friendly staff. I've been here a few times, but our wine educator Alex gave me new information and back stories for some of the more frequent pours. He was very knowledgeable, we learned a lot, and the wines are exceptional. We will be back for sure, and I hope Alex is there!
Kathryn's way
Gorgeous scenery and grounds and awesome member tasting area. Service is spectacular and if you get Jogo, you are in for a treat. Super knowledgable, fun and friendly staff for sure. The wines are super good here from whites to reds, but the cabs are the big draw for me. Ample parking and dog friendly.
Had a great time here! Our host Tom was fabulous - friendly and very knowledgeable. We did the St Helena Mountain Cabernet Experience, where we got to try several cabs from different mountain regions to compare how they tasted - all paired with small bites. Ended up purchasing two bottles - they were pricey but worth it, plus if you get one of the platinum bottles, it's only $1 shipping! The estate is beautiful so we also enjoyed just walking around. Will definitely return and try one of their other many experiences!
I was disappointed to come upon this place in Napa. I felt like I was stepping into Influencers In The Wild. Everyone seemed to be so obsessed with themselves, dressed to the nines, taking a million photos (of themselves). Maybe I'm becoming a grumpy old man, but I would much rather spend some time getting to know the owners, learning about the history of the area, getting a better feel for the culture. This place seemed so disconnected from reality, the opposite of a family vineyard type of establishment. And the wine was terrible too actually. It was sour. Beautiful vineyard, very poor implementation.
Amazing vineyard with an elegant tasting room in St. Helena. If you like a great Cabernet wine, you should try the flat of four wines. The vineyard, art, sculptures, water feature combined with the wine tasting, made for a nice afternoon in Napa Valley.

Check in Hostess manager Taylor was very rude! Customer service was not there, and I get it if he is busy or overwhelmed but that is not a way to talk to your members or customers in general. Hostess on top Kim was nicer & was able to seat us all together with no issues. Not sure why Taylor told us it would be very hard to get us all together when there were lots of space open when we arrived. Ray our server was super nice. He was welcoming & very knowledgeable with the wines that he was serving us. Hall is a beautiful place & even though it was a rainy day it was still really nice. Hall is getting a good review because of the rest of the service we did not let the bad service from the manager spoil our time there.

The 8 Best Wineries in Napa Valley’s St. Helena
- by DEVIN PARR
- on OCTOBER 23, 2023
Photo Courtesy of Trinchero Napa Valley
One could visit Napa Valley and never leave the town of St. Helena . Known for world-class wineries, an exciting culinary scene , independent shops and galleries, intimate hotels , and gorgeous vistas, St. Helena is at once modern and charming, offering a small-town vibe with big city hospitality and amenities.
In addition to its rich history and reputation as “Napa Valley’s Main Street,” St. Helena is home to some of California’s best wineries. From boutique, small-production facilities to state-of-the-art, iconic properties, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite must-visit spots when wine tasting in St. Helena.
Markham Vineyards
2812 St. Helena Highway North, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-5292
The gorgeous Heitz Cellar Estate has been an institution in eastern St. Helena since the 1800s. This very winery produced the first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa and specializes in Napa Cab to this day with its acclaimed Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Guests can get a glimpse of the original Heitz Cellar Estate on their Vineyard to Bottle Experience. You’ll be collected from your Napa hotel in a brand new Lexus before taking a tour of their organically farmed vineyards, biodynamic winemaking process, and the iconic Stone Cellar. The experience also includes a stop at The Salon, featuring library and current selection vintages paired with cheese and charcuterie from their very own larder.
Charles Krug Winery
2800 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 967-2229
Originally the dowry of Caroline Bale for her marriage to Charles Krug in the mid-1800s, Fantesca is now owned by college sweethearts Susan and Duane Hoff, who have created a place for seasoned wine connoisseurs in search of luxury wine experiences . Tasting experiences here are intimate and personalized, and include samples of Fantesca’s premium, small-production, award-winning wines in a stunning setting that includes a 300-foot Spring Mountain cave and sprawling vineyard views.
Other Noteworthy Spots
While you could easily spend days wining (and dining !) your way through St. Helena and still not hit every great spot, do splurge on Louis M. Martini ’s Underground Cellar Experience, which takes place in the 85-year-old barrel cellar and includes a tasting of small-lot and library wines with expertly curated pairings from Chef Aaron Meneghelli. Head over to William Cole Vineyards and kill two birds with one stone: the historic winery not only hosts tastings of William Cole’s flagship Cuvée Claire Cabernet Sauvignon, but also of sister property Predecessor Estate ’s ultra-small-lot, single-varietal wines from Howell Mountain.
Spend an afternoon at the 42-acre Ehlers Estate , exploring the winery’s rich history that dates back to the late 1800s and learn about the Leducq Foundation, dedicated to research in cardiovascular disease and stroke, which was established by the winery’s second owners, Jean and Sylviane Leducq.
Lastly, be sure to check out Faust Haus , the dramatic former farmhouse and Prohibition Era cellar, where you will enjoy age-worthy and terroir-driven wines in a gothic fairy tale setting.
Trinchero Napa Valley
3070 North St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-1160
With a family history that goes back to the late 1940s, this flagship Napa Valley in St. Helena winery offers small-lot, estate-grown wines at a state-of-the-art, yet warmly inviting property that features an intimate tasting room, bocce court, wine caves, and a gourmet culinary center. Wine experiences place an emphasis on education, showcasing the exciting nuances that terroir can impart on a wine’s flavor. Explore wines from Trinchero’s mountain vineyards in the Mountain Flight, and compare and contrast them with the wines from the valley floor during your next visit. Or, indulge in the Signature Experience where you will sip through a vertical tasting of Trinchero’s Signature Cabernet Sauvignon with a selection of cheeses while you cozy up around the outdoor firepit.
