High on Fire is a sludge metal group based out of Oakland, California, US. It was founded by the guitarist of Sleep, Matt Pike, and likewise features similar musical tones such as heavy use of drone, extreme distortion, lagging pace, and a mood reflective of stoner rock.

The band formed in 1998 and apart from Matt Pike it consisted of drummer Des Kensel and bassist George Rice. The members were strongly influenced by thrash artists like Slayer as well as doom metal bands such as Napalm Death, Obituary, Venom, and Black Sabbath. High on Fire took the mystical themes prevalent in Sleep’s music, but adapted them to a harsher and more heavy tonal style. The group released their studio debut album “The Art of Self Defense” in 2000 through Man’s Ruin Records. Southern Lords reissued the album in 2012 and included the Celtic Forest cover “The Usurper”.

The group’s sophomore album “Surrounded by Thieves” came out in 2002 through Relapse Records. Though their 1st album received high acclaim “Surrounded by Thieves” was considered a drastic improvement and is often recognized as one of the best metal albums of 2002. The song “Hung, Drawn and Quartered” was used to promote the LPs release and was included on a 7” split with Mastodon’s “March of the Fire Ants”. Bassist George Rice left the band after it’s release and was later replaced by ex-Melvin’s member Joe Preston.

Preston only appeared on the band’s 3rd album “Blessed Black Wings” before being replaced by Jeff Matz. Their 4th studio album hit the record stores in September 2007 and was declared a critical success upon release. Like its predecessor it featured lyrics inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and additionally referenced the works of David Icke and the Bible. The group toured extensively through 2007 and 2008 in support of this album and played alongside artists like Mono, Panthers, Opeth, Baroness, and Nachtmystium. By the end of 2008 High on Fire signed a recording contract with Kosh Records and in the fall of 2009 they embarked on yet another tour (this time with Mastodon, Dethlok, and Converge).

In early 2010 the band put out their 5th studio album “Snakes for the Divine”, which was produced by acclaimed sound engineer Greg Fidelman (Black Sabbath, Metallica, System of a Down etc...). This year also saw the band opening for Metallica for several of their shows in Europe. Their 6th studio album “De Vermis Mysteriis” came out on 3 April 2012. It is considered a time travel concept album and closely resembles the narrative of the TV show “Quantum Leap” though not intentionally.

Live reviews

It's hard to find such explosive music from a stand-still band, but High On Fire nails their live shows flawlessly.

Get in close and let shirtless Matt Pike shred away your skin and possible your own shirt. You'll swear there are five other guitarists behind stage, but it's all the guitar mastery of Pike.

While their stage presence is stationary, their music will literally crush you with sound. High On Fire is one of those special bands to see live whether you're a fan of Sleep-era doom or Motörhead-era thrash, High On Fire has something for every metalhead to love.

High On Fire excel at hypnotic riffs from both guitar and bass. You will easily lose yourself in the music and your mind will be taken off into a trance-like journey of stoner metal and fantasy. There is always a plethora of merch with cheeky shirts (Richard Pryor shirts and stickers, Master of Reality themed shirts, and more.) There will always be some amazing prints and posters and of course their albums on both CD and vinyl.

Most shows run around $20 a ticket if High On Fire is the headliner. If you're lucky, the venue will be small and intimate (or possibly at a bar). High On Fire is a band with lasting power musically and historically speaking. Don't expect them to sell out arenas but do take every chance you can get to see this amazing and iconic band live.

Californian heavy metal band High On Fire have a global reputation as masters of the genre and an overall extreme live performance. The trio has been performing together since the late 90s and they have seen venues large and small with equally varied crowds and they know how to handle them all. It is a juxtaposition as the smaller and more intimate audiences are more intense as Matt Pike and co can get up close and personal with the moshing masses. However the large auditoriums also look phenomenal when they are plunged into blood red lighting and hundreds of patrons all begin to jump and raise their hands during the bloody introduction of 'Fury Whip'.

The music and performance is completely relentless all night and carries itself with a noticeable weight pushing down on its crowd. There are huge building instrumentals on 'Madness of An Architect' and during this the audience goes completely mental as they all surge towards the barrier and towards the insane guitar riffs of Pike. As 'Snakes For the Divine' comes to a crunching halt and the whole venue explodes in cheers you understand why High On Fire carry such a huge reputation.

We went strictly to see High On Fire. High on Fire was great as they always are. They completely embarrassed the three opening bands. We went early to get balcony seats due to a back injury. Being there early, we suffered through three of the worst opening bands I can ever remember. Pallbearer was hands down the worst band I've ever seen or heard in my life. It was one long, mind numbingly boring dirge of extreme down-tuned guitar rubbish. It was just a garbled mess of sonic sludge that had no beginning or end. If there were any actual riffs or melodies, they where indecipherable. By the time they got to the end of their set I was so mad I wanted to go down and personally kick each one of them in balls and smash their instruments. "Hipster Doom" is the label that came to mind. Hopefully their tour van drives off a cliff before they get a chance to torture the next town.

It was my first time seeing them and I was amazed. The crowd reacted by crossing their arms and staring. Next time I'll make sure not to watch them in Munich. But I'm absolutely watching them again. World class.

High On Fire are heading Down Under next week. This will be their first visit back to Australia since 2014. The tour will kick off in Perth on 17 February and wind up in Auckland on 23 February.

“Lyrically, I think this is the album that’s going to basically get secret people to shoot me,” Pike told Rolling Stone in the weeks leading up to Luminiferous’ release. “Dude, I say a lot of f*cked-up shit!” It’s hard to top the conceptual bombast of 2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis , where Pike expounded on the story of Jesus’ time-travelling twin brother – but on Luminiferous , Pike takes the headf*ckery to a whole new level. Think David Icke meets ancient aliens on an acid trip, narrated by Lemmy’s spiritual successor howling over incinerating riffage and gargantuan solos, and you’re maybe halfway there.

Oakland, California sludge metal trio HIGH ON FIRE has been added to the Australian tour featuring LAMB OF GOD , DEVILDRIVER and SHADOWS FALL . The dates are as follows:

HIGH ON FIRE has set "Snakes For The Divine" as the tentative title of its fifth studio album and follow-up to 2007's "Death Is This Communion" . The CD was recorded with producer Greg Fidelman ( METALLICA , SLAYER , JOHNNY CASH ) at The Pass Studios in Los Angeles and is slated for a February 2010 release via E1 Music (formerly KOCH Records ). The artwork is once again being created by Arik Roper .

"We went a little over-aggressive with the drumming, and me and [bassist] Jeff [ Matz ] collaborated a lot more throughout the songwriting process," HIGH ON FIRE frontman Matt Pike tells AOL 's Noisecreep . "We went for a more aggressive approach. It's what we do well. We went for a heavier, ballsier, faster-paced sound that still has a lot of cleverness to it ... there are lots of stops and stalls, crazy licks. It's really heavy, a little more aggressive than our last album, a little less psychedelic. For the most part, the songs are amazing."

Working with Fidelman was a pleasure, says Pike . "He's a genius," the singer says. "He knows what he's doing. We thought we'd butt heads but we ended up seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of things."

HIGH ON FIRE is currently on the road with Atlanta's MASTODON and DETHKLOK — the animated death metal band from Adult Swim 's "Metalocalypse" . Hailed as "one of the most highly-anticipated tours of the year," the Adult Swim Presents trek kicked off on October 2 in Portland, Oregon and is bringing mayhem and destruction to local venues throughout the nation. Adding even more layers to this fall's top metal tour, CONVERGE is opening each show.
