Judy Gold: Yes, I Can Say That!

Theater review by Raven Snook At the outset of Judy Gold’s funny and furious new solo show, the veteran stand-up says that a comedian's only goal onstage is to make audiences laugh. By that standard, Yes, I Can Say That! is an uproarious success. But the show, based on Gold’s book of the same name, isn't just an evening of yuks. It’s also a memoir and memorial to her comedy forebears and, as the title of this Primary Stages production implies, an impassioned defense of the right to offend in an era when free speech is under attack from all sides . As an argument, Yes, I Can Say That!  is not always convincing. Gold is right that life is not a safe space, but she indulges in the false equivalency that speech is being stifled in the same way on the left and the right, and she never acknowledges that punch-lining down may have consequences beyond cancellation. If you’re rankled by digs at identity politics (especially pronouns), this may not be the show for you. Still, in the culture wars, we need savvy soldiers like Gold on the front lines to remind us that, in other countries, speaking your mind can get you jailed or killed. 

Directed by BD Wong, the show includes clever projections, cute stage business and clear emotional beats that keep it from hardening into a TED Talk, and ultimately it's more successful as a personal narrative than as a polemic. Gold's tributes to pioneering ladies like Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller and Totie Fields are moving and amusing, and her own tale of coming out while she was coming up is a testament to the importance of speaking one's truth, particularly for comedians. If they're not allowed to cross the line—which is constantly being redrawn, anyway—how will we ever move forward?

Theatre Review: Judy Gold in Yes, I Can Say That! (59E59 Theaters, New York) ★★★★★

Based on her on 2020 book— Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble —Emmy-winning veteran comedian Judy Gold’s thrillingly ambitious new one-woman show— Yes, I Can Say That! —examines stand-up comedy’s ability to speak truth to power, and the dangers of censoring and silencing comedians. Not only is it provocative, thought-provoking, and moving, it’s continually hilarious. Gold has discovered that free speech in comedy isn’t just a vital and timely topic that she’s fired up about, it’s also a rich comic seam.

Part memoir, Gold engagingly takes us back to her childhood—when she had a secret crush on Brooke Shields and a habit of putting on her father’s clothes before he got home from work—and her discovery of the pure satisfaction of making other people laugh, a pleasure that’s only increased over her decades-long career. She takes us through her experience of navigating stand-up as a “comedienne” in not just a male-dominated field, but one steeped in misogyny. In a particularly touching segment of the show, Gold talks about her admiration for the female comics who blazed the trail, as their faces are projected on to the stage around her. “Funny women” like Totie Fields, Lily Tomlin, Lucille Ball, Moms Mabley, Carol Burnett, Phyllis Diller, and her ultimate comedy idol, Joan Rivers. One of the reasons men say women aren’t funny, Gold points out, is the uncomfortable truths about men that they often bring to light in their work. In fact, most jokes are funny because there’s truth in them, Gold asserts.

Like Joan Rivers before her, Gold makes fun of topics that are closest to home first; her appearance; her Jewishness; her mental health; and her queerness, including her own internalized homophobia before coming out publicly in the mid-90s. She addresses her decision remain in the closet before that—in an age when Ellen, Rosie, and even Liberace weren’t out—before revisiting the joke that she did eventually come out to the world with, about being a gay parent (that’s still funny), and the reactions that she received as she toured nationally. The joke resulted in some walkouts, as well as some meaningful moments of audience members seeing LGBTQ folks in a new light thanks to her comedy.

At a time when the Earth itself is in crisis, reproductive, women’s, LGBTQ+, voting rights and more all in peril, Gold questions the distraction of policing language. Including PETA’s list of suggested “animal friendly idioms” to replace the likes of “killing two birds with one stone” with “feed two birds with one scone”. It’s part of a movement towards political correctness, Gold argues, that threatens to limit the scope of what comedians can joke about without calls for them to be cancelled.

In her defense of free speech in comedy, Gold makes clear that she is not here to defend “bullies or assholes”—they should be “called out on their shit”—but she’s not here to offer a “safe space” either, an idea that she rails against. “Art isn’t safe” she contends. She agrees with Fran Lebowitz’s observation that “being offended is a natural consequence of leaving the house”, but stresses that although she will say things that might take us out of our comfort zones and even trigger us, she won’t do it before she has earned our trust. Hence making herself a target first.

Using examples from her own sets as well as the work of her peers, Gold stresses the need for comedians to “cross the line”, to know when they’ve gone too far so they can take a step back and get the joke just right. For Gold, crossing the line happens when her audience is laughing at a joke for the wrong reasons. To illustrate, she revisits a joke that she told about removing a Hasidic woman’s wig, an extract of which was initially praised then heavily criticized online. While her intent had been to bring a defiant dose of comedy to an anti-Semitic incident—in the tradition of Jews, and other persecuted peoples and minorities finding resistance and strength, and retaining their humanity in laughter—she stresses that she wouldn’t want that joke to be taken out of context. Gold suggest, when criticizing a comedian shouldn’t the comedian’s intent be considered in the same way that it is in a homicide trial?

In surveying the history of comedy and censorship—which in itself demonstrates the perceived potential power in a comedian’s hands—Gold touches on the Nazi regime’s targeting of comedians as a dire indicator of what was to come, before looking at examples in the United States, like Lenny Bruce being arrested for content in his material in the 1960s in San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. Something that led to legal cases that actually helped to assert the free speech rights of comedians. Gold brings up a quote from Bruce, projected on the wall behind her: “Take away the right to say ‘Fuck’ and you take away the right to say ‘Fuck the government'”. Gold goes on to build a compelling argument that free speech in comedy is vital to a healthy democracy. After Michelle Wolfe’s controversial eye shadow joke in 2018 hit too close to home for some, comedy was cancelled at subsequent White House Correspondents’ Dinners while Trump remained in office. With Ron DeSantis banning books and implementing “don’t say gay or trans” laws in Florida, what would he do with comedy that he found to be distasteful if he ever got the reigns of federal power, Gold ponders. A phrase about the Holocaust that was drilled into Gold as a child lingers chillingly on the wall behind her: “It could happen here, if people believe it could never happen here”. Liberals, with a tendency to get offended at comedy by proxy, aren’t let off the hook by Gold either.

In examining what is and isn’t “appropriate”, Gold declares “if you feel that something is too serious to joke about, don’t joke about it, but that doesn’t mean they can’t”, observing that “a lot of great comedy is born from pain, from being marginalized, and from being othered”. She takes us through a whole host of comedians who’ve used their own dire circumstances and suffering as material for their comedy, like Tig Notaro and her battle with breast cancer and her friend Steve Moore joking about being HIV positive at the height of the AIDS crisis. As Gold sees it, comedians mining their own struggles for humour is something that not only helps to sustain the comedian themselves, but has the potential to “make us all smarter, more compassionate, and understanding”.

Comedians might discover that no one wants to laugh about certain things though, as Gilbert Gottfried found out when he made a joke in September 2001 about his flight making a detour at the Empire State Building. For that audience, in a city still in ashes, it was “too soon” for a 9/11 joke. But it wasn’t too soon to laugh again about other things, as a new season of SNL launched, playing its part in helping the nation to heal. While the holocaust might be further in the past, Gold admits that she’s cautious about where or if she tells a gas chamber joke that she has in her repertoire.

Co-written with Eddie Sarfaty, the jokes come thick and fast, but are never rushed, in this nuanced and at times deeply poignant piece of work. Every element has been well thought out and is brilliantly executed, from Kevin Heard’s sound design, to Anshuman Bhatia’s lighting, and Lex Liang’s set design, which looks like a traditional brick wall comedy club backdrop, but the “bricks” themsleves are actually comedy note cards. Shawn Duan’s projection design is impactful and inventive throughout. The work of these departments doesn’t just enhance Gold’s act, but delivers more humour, while BD Wong’s first-rate direction has a captivating flow and a satisfying clarity to it. Gold’s persona is straight-forward, passionate and sincere, speaking directly to her audience at 59E59 at the front of the stage, then making the distinction clear as she uses examples of material she’s done in her sets over the years, by moving to the stool and handheld mic “stand-up” set up at the back of the stage.

Yes, I Can Say That is a rich and stimulating work, that might trigger and offend some, but as Gold stresses “everything is not about you!” Gold argues stand-up is an art form, and proves it with this terrific work. It’s quite a feat to analyze comedy and laughter in a comedy show, take on such serious subjects, and create something that’s this entertaining and enlightening. It’s comedy gold.

Yes, I Can Say That!: Judy Gold Hilariously Makes Her Voice Heard

★★★★☆ The comedian talks about her influences and the corrosive effects of censorship on comedy in her one-person show.

In her new one-person show, comedian Judy Gold ambitiously attempts to blend traditional stand-up, autobiographical material, a tribute to the great female comedians of the past who’ve influenced her, and social commentary about the growing danger of social, political and even physical attacks on comedians around the world. It’s a tricky balance, but the talented and engaging performer manages to pull it off. Yes, I Can Say That! , co-written by fellow comedian Eddie Sarfaty and based on Gold’s 2020 book of the same name, has its rough spots. But overall, it proves enlightening, informative and, most important of all, funny.

Aided by sound effects and projections of images ranging from female comedians she’s admired to such subject headings as “Vaginas in Comedy,” Gold freely alternates between stand-up comedy, signaled by her use of a handheld microphone and a tendency to shout her lines, and more serious commentary, albeit still packed with one-liners, delivered in more sober tones. She pays lavish tribute, complete with imitations, to such inspirations as Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields, Joan Rivers, Moms Mabley and other women who entered the field at a time when it was largely dominated by males. And speaking of males, she has harsh words for Jerry Lewis, who once said about female comics, “A woman doing comedy doesn’t offend me, but sets me back a bit. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world.”

Ouch. It’s no wonder Gold refers to him as a “misogynist pig.”

Gold proves herself adept at analyzing the art form to which she’s devoted her life, demonstrated by her comments in the section about “crossing the line.” As an example, she delivers a joke using the Holocaust as a punch line. It’s very funny, but, as she points out, she has to be careful about when and where she uses it. On the other hand, she exults that if the audience laughs, and for the right reasons, it’s akin to winning the lottery. She cites several recent examples of comedians who don’t stay within politically correct territory and suffered career problems as a result.

One of those was Gold, who once made jokes about a Hasidic woman in Brooklyn who had her wig torn off while she was walking on the street with her children. Someone posted some of the jokes online, resulting in Gold getting vociferously attacked (we see a sample of the nasty emails) and receiving negative press publicity. But she’s clearly unbowed, not only repeating the jokes here but also expanding them. And they’re indeed hilarious, as is her imitation of Senator Chuck Schumer, whose speechifying style she compares to “reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish.”

Needless to say, Gold has little use for comedians kowtowing to people’s sensitivities, as exemplified by the trend of providing “safe spaces” that even some comedy clubs have come to embrace. She quotes her collaborator Sarfaty, who says, “Going to a comedy club and expecting not to get offended is like going on a rollercoaster and expecting not to get scared.”

She cites cases of comedians around the world who have been imprisoned by their governments and even killed, including her hero, Afghan comedian Khasha Zwan, who was murdered by the Taliban. In the execution video posted online, he’s seen making jokes and mocking his killers until the very end.

A particularly moving segment involves her tribute to such fellow comedians as Bob Smith, a close friend who continued performing after being diagnosed with ALS until audiences could no longer understand his slurred speech. And who continued to write jokes until his death with the aid of an iPad on which he typed them out with one finger.

If all this makes the show sound like a TED talk, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, the evening occasionally slips toward didacticism. And the staging by BD Wong can feel too cutesy at times with its visual and sound effects serving as theatrical rim shots. But Gold is so naturally funny, her delivery and comic timing so impeccable, that belly laughs are to be had in abundance. And while it may be true that Yes, I Can Say That! is preaching to the choir, that doesn’t make its sermon any less important or its preacher any less uproarious.

‘Yes, I Can Say That!’ Review: The Freedom to Offend

The comedian Judy Gold’s new solo show at 59E59 Theaters is deliberately uncomfortable — and packed with laughs.

The knuckle-dragging notion that women aren’t funny makes only a cameo in the comedian Judy Gold’s new solo show, “ Yes, I Can Say That! ” It’s tucked amid her homage to pioneering forebears like Totie Fields and Joan Rivers, who, Gold tells the audience, “said out loud what women whispered about when their husbands weren’t around.”

The slur about unfunniness, she says, was handed down through generations of men “who did not want to see some brassy broad onstage making jokes about them and the part they played in their wives’ unhappiness.”

Directed by BD Wong for Primary Stages , “Yes, I Can Say That!” is a deliberately uncomfortable, laugh-packed show seeded with stealth missiles like that one. Though Gold insists at the outset that a comedian’s only goal is to land the joke, this is not entirely true. As in her smart and impassioned book “Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble,” released in 2020, she wants at least as much to make us think.

Onstage at 59E59 Theaters , Gold builds a vehement case for the vital importance of the freedom to offend in a healthy democratic society. For starters, she would like us to get over the kind of hair-trigger touchiness about language that leads to social media pile-ons, and focus on genuine threats.

“They are taking away women’s rights, they are banning books, we have mass shootings, and people are furious if you mistakenly use the wrong pronoun,” she says. Then, urgently: “We had an insurrection, people!”

As much as Gold is in favor of some general toughening up across the political spectrum, she’s not anti-sensitivity — “I [expletive] hate bullies,” she says — just anti-preciousness and anti-absurdity. What worries her is the freedom of expression that gets taken away when the freedom to outrage is banished.

Written by Gold and Eddie Sarfaty, “Yes, I Can Say That!” interweaves a brief history of American comedy (Lenny Bruce is of course invoked) with Gold’s personal history, including comedy-club flashbacks, like the time she took rapid revenge on an M.C. who was witless enough to insult her just before she took the mic. She does some terrific impressions, including an uncanny Rudy Giuliani.

What she doesn’t quite do is make palpable any current threat to comedians’ speech, so a moment when she explicitly frets about that — in the context of speaking truth to the president at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — feels like a relic of the previous presidency, when Gold wrote her book. The show’s argument could gain strength by paying just a little more attention to some of the other First Amendment issues currently in the headlines.

Gold’s larger point is that the ugliness of the past isn’t as long ago as we like to think. She notes, unnervingly, that her birth in 1962 was just 17 years after the death camp at Auschwitz was liberated.

“Hashtag ObjectsInMirrorAreCloserThanTheyAppear,” she says, almost as if it’s a throwaway line.

She gets a laugh, but the joke is a warning.

Her recent film credits include Love Reconsidered and the upcoming She Came To Me, and Eternal Buzz. Judy is one of the main subjects in the Hulu documentary Hysterical. She has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show. From 1999-2010, Judy was the host of HBO’s At the Multiplex with Judy Gold. Judy also won two Emmy awards for writing and producing The Rosie O’Donnell Show. She was also a writer on the final season of Better Things. Judy has written and starred in two critically acclaimed, Off-Broadway hit shows: The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom (Outer Critics Circle Nomination), and 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother (GLAAD Media Award – Outstanding NY Theater, Drama Desk Nomination – Actor). Judy received rave reviews as Gremio in The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park all-female production of The Taming of The Shrew. She also co-starred in Off-Broadway’s Clinton! The Musical, and Disaster! The Musical. Judy has made numerous appearances on The View, The Today Show, The Drew Barrymore Show, and on MSNBC, CNN and NewsNation as free-speech advocate. She often pops up on The Food Network, but please do not mention Chopped All Stars or Rachel vs. Guy to her.
