Traffic queueing to leave the A1M on the approach to the closure

Breaking updates from Cambridgeshire's roads, rails and airports

We have more newsletters

Emergency services including the air ambulance have been called to a 'serious' crash on the A1(M) in Cambridgeshire today (Saturday, August 24). Police, paramedics and firefighters are all at the scene following the incident on the southbound carriageway.

The road is currently shut to traffic between Junction 15 (Sawtry) and Junction 13 (Brampton). A diversion route is in place as a result of the closure.

The crash is reported to have taken place at around 4.30pm. The road is expected to remain closed throughout the day as a result of the incident, according to National Highways.

Diversion route: A1(M) diversion route as 'serious' crash leaves road closed

A number of vehicles, including at least one car, are understood to have been involved. Traffic was also been held on the northbound carriageway to allow the air ambulance to land - although the northbound carriageway has now reopened.

The crash comes as millions of extra journeys are expected to take place across the UK over the August Bank Holiday weekend. National Highways has advised people to expect delays on the approach to the closure and the diversion route.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The A1(M) in Cambridgeshire is closed southbound between J16 (Sawtry) and J13 (A1 - Brampton) following a serious multiple vehicle collision. The northbound carriageway is now open with all lanes flowing.

"All emergency services remain at the scene with Cambridgeshire police leading the response. Traffic Officers and contractors have implemented strategic closures as the road is likely to remain closed throughout the evening."

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "A1 northbound carriageway Alconbury is now open. A1 southbound J15-14 Alconbury still remains closed at this time."

Latest live A1 traffic news

A1 and a1(m) traffic news and real time updates; get the latest info on a1 traffic delays, roadworks, accidents and snow.

A1 (M) motorway

Even though the A1 is just an A road, it is still one of the most important, most busy routes in the UK. At 410 miles in length it certainly has the scale of a motorway, linking together two capitals in the form of London and Edinburgh, as well as many other towns and cities besides.

Inevitably, the A1’s length makes delays almost inevitable, and these are only made worse by the fact that the A1 consists of just two lanes. So if you’re travelling along some (or heaven forbid, all) of it, you could save yourself a lot of time by staying up to date with the latest traffic news and accident updates available on this page.

• What is a smart motorway?

With roadworks seemingly a permanent fixture on the A1, and with the usual mix of incidents and traffic jams to contend with, it’s far from likely that you’ll complete your journey without any delays. And your odds get even worse when the weather intervenes, especially when it snows. But by using the following information, you should be able to improve your odds…

Below you can find all the latest A1 and A1(M) traffic information via our specially built Twitter feed, which draws real-time alerts from the Highways Agency, official police accounts and other traffic news feeds. We’ve also got a live traffic map so you can pick out incidents as they happen, and there’s a list of important intersections as well...

A1 and A1M live traffic map

The A1 passes through North London and over the M25, then keeps heading North past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, Leeds, Harrogate, York, Ripon, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Alnwick and Berwick.

•  M25 traffic news

The map below shows live updates on the current problem areas of the A1 and A1M for roadworks, accidents or general congestion causing delays on the road...

A1 and A1(M) History

Dick Turpin and his ilk were the cause of many early hold-ups on the A1 back in the days of stagecoach travel (when it was known as the Great North Road), but you’ll be extremely unlucky to be accosted by a highwayman today. There are plenty of reports of theft of goods and fuel from parked up lorries in certain sections of the A1, but the average motorist can generally expect safe passage.

•  M6 traffic news

However there are still plenty of (often closed) coaching inns along the route that have links to the early days of turnpike travel – including some famous ones like the Ram Jam Inn between Stamford and Grantham.

The A1 was first named as such in 1921 by the Ministry of Transport, but it basically follows a North-South route that has been documented since Roman times.

Shohei Ohtani's dog Decoy throws perfect first pitch at Dodgers game

It turns out Shohei Ohtani's dog can pitch, too.

On Wednesday night, the Dutch Kooikerhondje named Decoy perfectly executed the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Wearing his own Dodgers uniform, Decoy patiently waited on the pitcher's mound until Ohtani squatted at home plate. Then Decoy grabbed the ball in his mouth and ran it over to Ohtani, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Decoy then gave his owner a high-five with his paws.

Fans had flocked to the sold-out game that night, eager to get hold of a new Ohtani bobblehead, this time featuring him holding his famous dog. On his first bobblehead night in May, Ohtani, a two-time American League MVP, also drew a sellout crowd.

He continued his show during the game, smashing his 42nd home run of the season at his first at-bat as the Dodgers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-4.

Ohtani is a two-way phenom, excelling as both a hitter and a pitcher, but he will only be hitting this season after his second elbow operation .

In an interview after the game, he said it took three weeks for him to train Decoy for the pitch.

"I think I was more nervous for the ceremonial pitch than Decoy," Ohtani said. "But I'm glad everything went well."

Aerial ropeway

live travel news a1

A unique installation for central Russia, an aerial ropeway spans the Volga, connecting Nizhny Novgorod with Bor. The scenic service is very frequent, although somewhat pricey for such a short distance (90 RUR, as of 2016).

Outside of the cities, there are a number of important monasteries within Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, such as Makaryev Monastery (across the Volga from Lyskovo), or the Diveyevo Monastry not far from Sarov, in the southwest of the province.

Russia's Golden Ring is nearby and its prominent attractions at Vladimir and Suzdal can be daytripped from Nizhny Novgorod by bus.

The next major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Vladimir to the west and Kirov to the east.
