Review: Longchamp Weekender—Le Pliage Expandable Travel Duffel Bag

longchamp expandable travel tote

I am a reformed overpacker. My natural inclination toward procrastination, coupled with general forgetfulness, also ensures that I always pack at the last minute, which inevitably leads to my forgetting something (always minor but inevitably causes anxiety). But if adulthood has taught me anything about travel, it’s that nothing is indispensable aside from ID-money-phone-charger-glasses-jacket-and-comfortable shoes .

When traveling for leisure, I cram (somewhat ungracefully) everything into either a backpack or my trusty weekender , both of which will fit under airplane seats (albeit tightly; in the event that there’s no overhead compartment space) and no flight attendant has ever forced me to check them. Needlessly waiting around is the bane of my existence and I avoid it whenever possible. And the wait at baggage claim, surrounded by overtired (so understandably grouchy) travelers, is an experience I dread. So my only criteria for choosing a carry-on: it must be flexible and small enough to stow under the seat in front of me.

I have been curious about the Longchamp Le Pliage Expandable Travel Duffel for about a year now. The expandable aspect is appealing to me because the volume of my load changes considerably over the course of my trips, showing a downward trend as I demolish perishables and exhaust toiletries. The bag then gets refilled with snacks for the return trip, though I often wish for extra room so I can shop more freely.

QUALITY I, the owner of several Le Pliage Totes (reviewed here ), know just how reliable Longchamp’s quality is. I never worry that I would have to contend with broken zippers, no matter how much force I exert when trying to close an overpacked bag.

The water-resistant nylon is highly durable, though I always warn  new users that Le Pliage bags wear heavily in the corners.

DETAIL The bag is designed with double handles (4″ drop) and a removable adjustable canvas shoulder strap (16″-25″ drop; pictured here on the shortest setting), to allow for some flexibility in how the bag can be carried.

longchamp expandable travel tote

PRICE The bag retails for $255, which is far from inexpensive but is relatively reasonable compared to like items. Seasonless Longchamp colors for the Le Pliage (“folding bag”) style are almost never discounted, though seasonal colors often go on moderate sales. If you are after one of the seasonless colors (e.g., black, navy, red, bilberry, gunmetal, tan), you can consider waiting for one of Neiman Marcus’s $50 off $200 events , which comes around every month or so (usually mid-month) and lasts between 2-3 days.

CAPACITY I knew this bag would become my new favorite travel bag when recently, as I was running out the door and already 20 minutes behind schedule, I decided I must pack my trusty blowdryer into the already full bag, a quick unzipping of the duffel made it possible without making any adjustments. This bag obviated what is normally an agonizing process of making mental cost/benefit analyses of forgoing some other item to accommodate my hair dryer.

The bag has three states: (1) pouched , (2) zipped , and (3) unzipped . (1) The bag can be folded into a small pouch when completely empty, which makes it easy to store and also painless to bring as an incidental item. (2) The bag measures 17.75″W, 14″T, and 9″D in a zipped state but (3) expands to 20″T when unzipped. In the zipped state, it has the capacity of a standard duffel bag (very slightly roomier than the Madewell Transport Weekender ). Unzipped, the bag has about 1.5 times as much volume as a regular duffel bag.

longchamp expandable travel tote

My strategy for using this bag (and I am sure I’ll have other revelations as I get better acquainted with it) is to pack as though it only exists in the zipped state and to reserve the space in the unzipped state for unintended or forgotten items. But a packing strategy is only as good as the person who came up with it, so I won’t belabor my approach.

I’m not saying this bag is perfect, because it isn’t. The expandable aspect is undeniably useful but it’s so easy to overload the bag when it’s fully expanded. The bag weighs about 1.5 pounds empty but at capacity can easily weigh 20 times that. I am not a weak person but it is not easy (or pleasant) to haul a 30-pound bag around.

Additionally, aside from a small interior wall pocket, there is no other division built into the bag so it can be difficult to locate an item after you’ve packed it. It may be worthwhile to invest in luggage organizers .

Longchamps Bags Reviews

Table of contents.

Every time I step into an airport, I feel like there’s a sale on Longchamp Le Pliage bags — they’re everywhere! With a price tag of around $145, I know they’re not being given away, so I wondered: Why do so many women travel with them?

Are Longchamps the best travel handbags? I turned to a trusted group of avid female travelers (the women on TFG’s Facebook group , of course!) and asked what they thought of these handbags for travel. This is what they had to say.

Longchamps Bags Reviews: Best Stylish Bag for Travel

When we asked what our readers loved most about the Longchamp Le Pliage travel bag, many of them explained how stylish it was.

One reader says, “I saw an incredibly chic passenger with a well-worn, large Le Pliage on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard more than a decade ago. I still wonder where she was heading and what glamorous events her weekend entailed. I had to have one for myself! Alas, the Gatsby-esque lifestyle did not come with it.”

Another reader says, “I used it on an island-hopping trip across Greece, and it was the best! I could fit a week’s worth of clothes inside, and it did double duty as a beach tote! I love it so much that I want the other smaller sizes, but you can’t fit much in those.”

Most Versatile Travel Bag: Longchamp Le Pliage Review

Readers also say the Le Pliage is one of the most versatile travel bags as it can serve multiple functions and for many different occasions.

One reader says, “I have the larger one that doubles as a travel shoulder bag, and I use it all of the time! I use it as an everyday tote, a carry-on tote, or if I’m taking a wheelie, then it serves as an extra bag in my suitcase.”

Another reader traveling with children finds it perfect for her family needs. “We’ve been using it in our travels as a nursing bag. We have two small children, and I have a larger shopper tote with longer straps. It holds a lot of the stuff we need on our travels with children.

“We’ve taken it on a plane with baby stuff (food, diapers, toys, wipes, etc.) and at the destination, it can be used as a beach bag or a shopping bag. It’s easy to handle and carry-on your shoulder.”

Best Foldable Travel Tote: Longchamp Review

The most popular way the Longchamp bag seems to be used on trips abroad is by folding it up and bringing it along as a spare tote or carry-on bag!

A TFG group member says, “A huge bonus is that it folds and neatly snaps together, so if you’re on a longer trip and planning to pick up a thing or two, you can stow it away until needed as an extra bag for the journey home. This is a good investment.”

Another reader says, “I purchased a large black one several years ago in Paris and have used it for everything from a purse, to a weekend tote, to a gym bag. It’s an excellent carry-on bag and easy and light to throw into a larger suitcase if you’re expecting to bring back some extra souvenirs. The real ones are durable and resistant to dust.”

This reader finds many uses for her Longchamp tote: “ I have been traveling with mine for years. I always pack it, because it makes a great extra bag if you need another suitcase on the return home. I’ve used mine as a beach bag, overnight bag, and a market bag for grocery shopping (in Europe you have to buy plastic bags and this is much better).”

Large Longchamp Le Pliage Shoulder Tote

Longchamp Most Lightweight Bag for Travel

Our readers explain that the light weight of Longchamp handbags is what makes them easy to pack and carry around the world!

One reader says, “I love mine, but if I’m using it as a travel purse, it must have a purse organizer in it. Otherwise, everything is hard to find. But with an organizer, it’s great! I love how lightweight it is.”

Another says, “When in Paris recently, everyone was carrying one! There was even a billboard near the airport — beware of imitation bags. I carry it mainly as a tote, but as a purse, I would add an organizer or use a cross body for overseas travel. I have a similar bag as my personal item for the plane — I love that I can throw in a light jacket and stuff it full since it’s so lightweight.”

Despite only one little pocket, this reader loves hers, saying, “My 17-year-old daughter and I love Longchamp bags. They are very lightweight and durable. We have used them on many trips and will again in June for her graduation trip to Italy. The main negative is that it has only one little pocket.”

Longchamps Reviews: The Perfect Weekender Bag

One Travel Fashion Girl reader explains that Longchamps are the best travel handbags for short weekend trips as opposed to long, international trips where you may need more storage. Use packing cubes to help compress your clothing for your short vacation!

One reader says, “This may never take the place of a backpack for long-term travel, however it’s perfect for shorter trips and when you don’t really need to carry around your stuff all the time! Also, I personally haven’t had any issues folding it up. There are sometimes some very cool airport exclusive designs to choose from!”

Another adds, “This is one of the best travel handbags for weekend travel. It’s sturdy, holds a ton, and even marinara sauce and red wine stains wipe right off!”

Are Longchamp Le Pliage Bags Waterproof?

The nylon material of the Longchamp handbag line makes their purses water-resistant, but not necessarily waterproof. Thankfully, water resistance is usually all you’ll need while traveling!

Water resistance will keep all of your items dry inside the bag whenever it rains or you spill something on it. It wicks away the moisture, which is great for any destination you may be headed.

I would love to have a Longchamp Le Pliage bag for my personal item to go under the seat on international flights, but none of them have a trolley sleeve and I need to have that feature. Wonder why Longchamp doesn’t consider adding that to one of their travel bags. What do others do? It’s not that convenient or comfortable to have a stuffed bag on your shoulder going through airports.

Alex

Hi Margot, if you are looking for a bag with a trolley sleeve, you may find like one of the options featured on this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-bags-with-trolley-sleeve/ Hope this helps. 🙂

Chelly

hi, do you know which bag organizer fits best for longchamp le pleage small?

Hi Chelly, thank you for reaching out. Have a look at this article for the best purse organizer for the Longchamp purse: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-purse-organizer/ The measurements for the purse are 9 ¾”W x 11″H x 5 ½”D. Check the dimensions of the inserts carefully to ensure that they will fit properly. I also recommend ordering a few to see which one works best for your needs. I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have about bag organizers there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps answer your question. Happy travels! ?

I love the lesportsac medium Dakota bags. They even have one on nordstromrack.com right now. One has a roller so if it’s too heavy on top of your carry on, you can roll it!

Kipling has a couple bags with trolley sleeves too. I’ll put a pricier bag inside and use the kipling to protect it.

For the le pliages, I use the short handle on the medium or large expandable around the handle and support it with an elastic bag support thing.

Carolyn

Have the Le Pliage and I agree with Glamourous Traveler. No interior pockets so it is like a black hole! There is so much to like about this bag (mentioned above) but for long trips I have switched to a Tumi. I feel so much more organized with the various side pockets etc. plus I can slip it over my carry on bag’s handle.

Hi Carolyn, thank you for sharing your review of your Longchamp handbag with us!! Safe and Stylish travels!

Anna

Longchamp also has a stunning bag that has a loop to slip over luggage.

Janene

I agree, it’s a black hole. But I do use it and have some essentials packed in clear zip bags, still have to dig but at least I know what bag I’m looking for!

Sue Ellen Walters

Does anyone know if the Longchamp weekend bag can be used as a carryon item? How about if you expand it?

Hi Sue, unfortunately we are not sure if the Longchamp weekend bag can be used as a carryon item. I think it would depend on the airline which you were traveling with as different airlines have different size requirements. The size for this bag is 17 ¾”W x 20 ½”H x 9″D for you to check against the airline requirements. I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there about the Longchamp bag: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and travel tips and many of our female adventurers own this bag so will be able to help you with your question. Sorry I could not have been of more help.

Angela

I use mine as a carry on bag all the time. I do have it zipped, but I have never had a problem. It stores under the seat in front of me.

Rachel

I can’t stand traveling with a shoulder bag. Having to constantly hike it up onto my shoulder is super annoying. I need a backpack or crossbody, so my Henri Bendel convertible bag is perfection!

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing, so happy to hear you love your Henri Bendel convertible bag. Have a look at this post about what our other readers have the say about the Henri Bendel bag: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/rebecca-minkoff-vs-henri-bendel-backpack/ Hope you find it interesting! 🙂

sehar

There is no doubt in the face that longchamps are the best travel bags. I have to travel a lot and having a handbag that is spacious is a blessing literally.

Hi Sehar, thank you for your comment! Thank you for sharing your review of the Longchamps bag with us! 🙂

Eunice

I’m not sure if purse slashing is common in other parts of the world, but it was brought to our attention that there were a few cases involving Le Pilage bags in Malaysia some time back. The thieves seem to find it easy to slash open this range of bags. Just thought I’d put it out here. The fabric material is definitely easy to tear as compared to others.

Hi Eunice, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! If theft is a concern for you, take a look at these articles: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/anti-theft-products/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/top-5-anti-theft-travel-bags-for-women-best-sellers/ 🙂

Thank you, Alex. I got myself a Travelon cross body a year ago based on your recommendations. I love how the bag is slash proof, is RFID safe & best of all, holds a bottle on the outside (not many cross body bags come water bottle pockets)! The only downside to this bag is that the strap is uncomfortable and hard on the shoulders. I guess they can’t make it slash proof without using the soft metal-like material (not sure what it is) for the strap.

Hi Eunice, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Candie Steinman

Just got the travel bag that expands in Vienna and love it. In Paris a few years back got one of these bas in a champagne color and it has a crossbody strap – going back to Europe with me in July.

Yay, that is awesome Candie, so pleased you love your new purchase and I hope you enjoy it on many fun and exciting adventures!! Have an incredible trip back to Europe this summer!!

Tammigirl

I’ve been a fan of Longchamp since I accidentally fell in love with a pink backpack in a store window while strolling through Paris. The Le Pliage comes in a backpack, too! The older ones, which I’m so glad I have, actually have a way to pull the back once you close the bag in order to lock it shut while you wear it. It’s nice to know pickpockets can open the flap, but not get the bag open if you are wearing it. The new ones have zippers to shut, which I don’t understand. That great locking mechanism, which was just a tiny piece of leather, is lost with it. But still, there is a backpack version of the Le Pliage. I carry a Le Pliage Neo for day to day because it’s sturdier than a regular Le Pliage. It doesn’t fold like the regular ones, but I have never needed to fold it – plus I have regular Le Pliage bags for when I want one I can fold.

Longchamp has been my favorite handbag brand since 2000, because I can have something really nice without it screaming the brand name from 100 yards.

Toni Giglio

My daughter(now 21) and I just traveled in Europe with our Longchamps! My daughter stayed to study abroad and bought the backpack purse by Longchamp and it is now her favorite for traipsing around London

alex

It’s on my wishlist!

brianolmo

Thanks for Sharing, I personally like the tote bags as they are very comfortable. A stylish tote bag will surely enhance the personality of a modern women.

Thanks Brian!

SweetiePie

I have a Longchamp Le Pliage expandable bag with the longer shoulder straps in leather. I love the bag, but the shoulder straps cut into my shoulders like a mo-fo! If I had to do it again, I would get the one that has the wide strap that can go across the body. You can put a lot into them and they are quite light, but that round leather strap is definitely a torture device! I also agree with the other person that the expandable zipper does not look like it would hold-up long term.

alex

Oh that’s a good thing to keep in mind! Thank you for sharing!

I use the Le Pilage backpack and the rough fabric straps tend to cut into my shoulders and armpit. Very uncomfortable and painful. The shoulder bags come with leather handles which are more gentle on the shoulder.

Carol L Stoddard

I’m glad you mentioned that as I was considering getting one at a Duty-Free shop in Amsterdam. I am thinking of getting a tote for my daughter. Hopefully, she will like it.

Rebecca

I’ve had the expandable bag now more than 10 years, and the expansion zip has no issues at all. I’ve carried it expanded and also sent it through checked baggage expanded, and no problems. If something does break, keep in mind they will send it for repair for you – my husband somehow broke the (regular, not expansion) zipper on an XL travel bag, and they replaced the entire zipper and pull for $30!

Julia

Hey Alex, Can you please do a post on how many purses you have accumulated throughout your travels and what to do with the ones you don’t use anymore?

Hi Julia, good question! I’m afraid I’ve already sold the majority of them on Poshmark or given them away to friends 🙂 Since I live out of my suitcase I can only own what I can fit in my bag 😉

Karen

I purchased 2 longchamp neo bags in medium size last year. I use it as an everyday bag and also as a carry on bag last February. I love that I can carry a lot of stuff in this bag, I can easily clean it, and it’s water resistant! Worth every peso 🙂

Definitely awesome travel bags!

Natalie

Longchamp also makes the Le Pliage backpack and the Le Pliage Neo (tote with crossbody strap), which both look like good options.

Heather @ TravelingSaurus

My Le Pliage has also been on many trips, but I agree with the pocket complaint. I actually purchased a similar-style Tumi bag, that has enough pockets I’m constantly losing things. But it’s not quite as compact as the Le Pliage, and fits slightly less. Also, I’m a big fan of the pretty water resistant material of the Longchamps. Mine is looking pretty worn and ragged at this point, so I’d say while it’s maybe not THE best, it’s definitely a good bag to have!

Glamourous Traveller

I do like bringing the Longchamp Le Pliage, but find the biggest problem I have with them is that they don’t have extra pockets on the inside. I like having my keys and cell phone in easy access but shudder at the thought of putting them together and having key scratches on my cell

Sarah

Lo & Sons makes great travel bags with tons of pockets, a detachable crossbody strap, secure interior pockets, padded spot for a laptop, and it is super stylish. My favorite part is that it has a special sleeve that allows you to slide it onto your wheeled luggage making it a snap to get around with more than one bag. It comes in great colors and is very durable.

I took it with me to Germany and Holland this spring and cannot say enough good things about their bags.

I have one as well and yes they are amazing!

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

While many travelers opt for a backpack as a trusted travel companion, we think tote bags offer similar (if not better) features for certain travelers. Tote bags are convenient for quickly accessing items like a phone or wallet since your belongings are kept closer to the body.

It’s important to invest in a tote bag (or any piece of luggage for that matter) that fits your needs as a traveler. There are tons of different bag styles out there, so we pulled recommendations and notes from seasoned travelers and Travel + Leisure editors to crowdsource the best tote bag options from travel experts. Plenty of packable, convertible, weekender, and leather tote bags came highly recommended, and we highlighted why each bag earned praise so you can make the most informed decision whether you’re a frequent flier, road tripper, or office commuter.

Best Overall

Mz wallace deluxe tote.

The large storage capacity and efficient organization make it an excellent personal item for flying.

The laptop pocket isn’t padded.

This quilted MZ Wallace tote bag earned major points for having a spacious capacity without feeling bulky or weighted down when it’s packed full. An ideal bag for air travel, it can fit carry-on essentials while still being able to fit underneath an airplane seat, and the zippered top keeps everything safe and sound. There are tons of pockets for storing items, including a 13-inch laptop pocket (unpadded) and five other smaller pockets for lip balm, phone chargers, and wallets. Although we found this tote bag to be exceptionally lightweight, it boasts a trolley sleeve to secure the bag to a suitcase to give your shoulder a rest when needed. It also comes with a detachable shoulder strap to carry the bag as a crossbody when desired.

This bag came highly recommended after thorough testing and the only slight inconvenience we ran into is that the tote is unstructured so if there isn’t a laptop in it, the items sag at the bottom. However, the variety of pockets help to distribute the weight, so we still think this bag is the ultimate travel companion for storing the essentials.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Quince revive nylon large tote.

It conveniently folds up for packing and is impressively lightweight.

There isn’t a top zipper.

The Quince Revive Nylon tote bag was praised by our experts for its lightweight material and portable design for traveling. The bag is made with durable nylon, it never feels cumbersome to carry, and the fabric design makes it easy to fold up the bag to place it in a carry-on or backpack without taking up much space. With designated pockets for a laptop, water bottle, and smaller items, we love that there is a spot for both everyday and travel essentials for supreme versatility. If the tote gets dirty while traveling, you can spot-clean the nylon fabric with soap and water, and it comes in Oxford blue, olive, and black color options that easily hide wear and tear over the years. Because the tote bag doesn’t have a top zipper, it scored slightly lower than our top pick, but we still think the flexible fabric and slim design of the tote helps keep it close to your body while walking through a crowded airport or down busy streets.

The Details: 17 x 13 x 7 inches | Recycled nylon | Water resistant | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Open-top Canvas

L.l.bean boat and tote bag.

It can accommodate bulky items thanks to the wide-mouth opening.

It doesn’t have any organizational features, so you’ll want to use packing cubes or pouches.

Beach days, picnics, and road trips are the best uses for this spacious canvas tote from L.L. Bean. Made from heavyweight cotton canvas, the tote was originally designed to carry ice from a car to an ice chest back in 1944, and it still boasts the brand’s impressive 500-pound weight capacity (though we hope your travel essentials will never weigh that much). While we’d normally be wary of a travel bag without any pockets, the bag has a generous capacity, which makes it ideal for blankets, lunch boxes, shoes, or any other bulkier item needed for a day or road trip. And when it comes to durability, you can’t beat a tote bag constructed with enough reinforcement to carry over a dozen cinder blocks.

The Details: 13  x 12 x 6 inches | Cotton canvas

Best Machine-washable

Baggu duck bag.

The cotton is machine-washable, and it comes with a crossbody strap.

The top has a magnetic button closure.

Traveling can be hard on luggage, so we love that you can toss the Baggu Duck Bag in a washing machine to prolong the life of the tote. It came highly recommended after one of our team members spilled an entire burrito inside, and all it took was one rinse cycle to get it looking good as new. The canvas material is made with 65 percent recycled cotton from pre-consumer waste like old socks or T-shirts. In addition to the tote handles, the bag also comes with an adjustable crossbody strap to carry the bag over the shoulder. It has enough room to carry a laptop up to 15 inches long, and there is a small zippered pocket on the inside for a wallet or earbuds. One thing to note is that the top has a magnetic button closure instead of a zipper.

The Details: 15.75 x 11 x 4.75 inches | Recycled cotton canvas

Best Open-top Leather

Milaner woven handbag.

It’s big enough to be an overnight bag if needed.

There isn’t a laptop pocket.

This woven Milaner leather tote bag is the ultimate tote bag for flying, commuting, or an overnight trip . The larger size can accommodate bulky items like clothing, shoes, or a laptop, and there are two small zippered pockets for wallets and phone chargers. Thanks to the structured design of the woven Nappa, suede, or Vachetta leather, this bag is super easy to pack with travel essentials without feeling cumbersome to carry. It doesn’t have a top zipper, but it does feature a slim shape so the bag is kept close to the body. We also recommend using the dust bag it comes with when placing the bag under an airplane seat to keep the contents from spilling out or getting the bag dirty from the airplane carpet.

The Details: 20 x 14 x 3 inches | Nappa leather

Best Sustainable

Béis east to west tote.

It’s made with 100 percent recycled material.

It only comes in two colors, and the white could get dirty quickly.

We’re big supporters of eco-friendly luggage that is still just as durable as this tote bag from T+L-loved brand, Béis. Made with 100 percent recycled polyester and recycled faux leather trim, the bag comes in simple black and white shades. There is a padded laptop pocket for laptops up to 15 inches long, two water bottle pockets, two slip pockets, and one zippered pocket so there’s a spot for everyday and travel essentials. Other helpful features for travelers include a trolley sleeve for carrying it on a suitcase, a key leash so you won’t have to dig around to unlock the door (plus you can attach an AirTag holder to it), and a zippered pocket in front. We can’t forget to mention the two lengths of tote handles and a detachable crossbody strap.

The Details: 17.13 x 14.17 x 9.06 inches | Recycled polyester, vegan leather | 15-inch padded laptop pocket | Luggage sleeve

Best Lightweight

Longchamp tote bag.

It folds into a fraction of the original size for superior packability.

The leather straps aren’t padded.

This lightweight tote bag is ideal for both maximalist and minimalist packers since it folds into itself and can easily be stored in a larger bag without taking up valuable space. Despite the featherlight design, the bag is made with a hardy recycled polyamide canvas that can withstand the test of time. Besides the excellent portability, we love that the tote bag has a zippered top  with a large leather flap that closes over the zipper to give peace of mind that items are safely tucked away while traveling. There’s only one small zippered pocket inside the bag, which could be a slight drawback for some, but we think the packable design is well worth the lack of pockets. The bag comes in seven colors ranging from neutrals hues to bolder tones, and the leather straps, though unpadded, give the bag a chic look to complement any outfit.

The Details: 12.2 x 11.8 x 7.5 inches | Recycled polyamide canvas, leather | Packable

Best Convertible

Caraa studio tote.

It has a convenient modular design to carry the bag as a tote or backpack.

The exterior shoe pocket can only accommodate smaller shoes.

Can’t decide between a tote or backpack? This Caraa Studio tote bag has a two-in-one design to carry it as either, offering the best of both worlds. With detachable shoulder straps, the leather tote bag can be converted to a backpack in seconds or carried over one shoulder if you’re in crowded areas like a subway or sidewalk and want to keep the bag close. Best of all, there is tons of built in storage to stay naturally organized while traveling. Our favorite features include the 17-inch laptop pocket and shoe compartment on the side of the bag to separate footwear from the rest of the main compartment. Although the pocket can only hold smaller shoes, it can be a game-changer for certain travelers. And there are eight other pockets built into the interior anti-microbial lining to store phone chargers, wallets, passports, and more when you’re en route to a destination.

The Details: 18 x 13 x 7.5 inches | Italian leather | 17-inch laptop pocket

Most Durable

Carhartt legacy east/west tote.

This bag is made to last with a sturdy design and hardy fabrics.

The ends of the zippers don’t connect to the fabric, so small items could escape.

Camping, ski trips, beach days, and other outdoor activities can sometimes speed up the wear and tear on a tote, but that’s not the case with Carhartt’s Legacy East West Tote. We’re confident this bag is built to last due to the heavy duty 600 denier polyester and DWR coating to keep the elements from seeping into the tote. After four years of our constant use while traveling and commuting, the tote earned high praise for not showing any signs of letting up on quality anytime soon. With a zipper top and several slip pockets on the interior and exterior, there are spots to store a phone, keys, and wallets safely in the bag. There are gaps on each end of the bag because the ends of the zipper aren’t sewn to the fabric, so watch out for smaller items in the bag since they could fall out.

The Details: 16.5 x 13.5 x 7.25 inches | Polyester | Water resistant

Best for the Beach

Carve designs treasure tote bag.

It's the perfect size to fit everything you need for a beach day (including small towel.)

We wish it had some small pockets for storing accessories.

Whether you’re en route to the beach on foot or airplane, this tote bag is specifically designed for tropical vacations. While this tote is essentially one large pocket (without smaller areas to store accessories or essentials), it's the perfect size to take with you to the beach and to lunch afterward without lugging too much around. It's stylish enough that light packers may even use this as their main vacation purse and, paired with the matching treasure clutch , everything you need will be kept organized and ready to go. We love the white cloud texture of the outer materials paired with the stylish brown straps that are both comfortable and durable.

The Details: 14.5 x 15 inches | Cotton

Best for the Office

Bandolier tote bag.

It has various pockets for a laptop, sunglasses, and a water bottle.

The tote straps could be more comfortable.

A day in the office is like a mini trip, so it’s important to be organized and have plenty of space for items when you’re away from home. The Bandolier tote bag offers a spot to pack office essentials like a laptop, a water bottle, a phone charger, snacks, a wallet, and more. The laptop pocket can fit technology up to 15 inches wide, and there is a leather sunglasses sleeve to protect fragile eyewear en route to the office. There are several other zippered and slip pockets to organize smaller items or a water bottle, and the D-ring loop on the tote handle is designed to hold other Bandolier accessories like a keychain or earbud pouch. The entire bag is made with a sleek pebbled leather, including the leather tote straps, which could be more comfortable with padding. It also comes in black, brown, and gray colorways.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 6 inches | Leather | 15-inch laptop pocket | Sunglasses pocket

Best With Shoe Compartment

Minkars weekender bag.

The bag comes with a separate shoe compartment, toiletry case, USB port, laptop pocket, and plenty of other thoughtful features for travelers.

It can get heavy when packed full.

A dupe of the iconic Béis weekender bag, this wallet-friendly version has similar features for a fraction of the price. While it’s jam-packed with helpful features for travelers, it received the highest praise for the separate compartment at the bottom of the bag that can store shoes, toiletry cases, hair tools, or any other item you want to keep separate from the main compartment. The structured bag has a wide-mouth opening and is super easy to pack thanks to the 15.6-inch laptop pocket, included toiletry case, and various other pockets for staying organized. Plus, the weekender comes with convertible straps to carry it as a tote or crossbody bag as needed, and it comes in pink, black, or cream color options.

The Details: 17 x 16.5 x 8 inches | 15.6-inch laptop pocket | Shoe compartment | Toiletry bag includes | Trolley sleeve

Best Multi-use

Dakine verge weekender tote.

It’s useful for the outdoors or traveling.

It might get heavy when it’s packed full.

This spacious tote bag from Dakine is equipped for everything from camping and beach days to trips to the office and air travel. When it comes to traveling, the bag features a padded laptop sleeve for devices up to 16 inches; a handy trolley sleeve; and a separate zippered compartment in the bottom of the bag to organize items like shoes, toiletry cases, or clothing as desired. Made with durable recycled nylon and polyester, the tote looks rugged and works well as a weekender bag for camping or for packing beach day essentials like towels and snacks. Travelers can carry the bag as a tote with the top handles or it also comes with a detachable crossbody strap.

The Details: 23.5 x 16 x 11 inches | Recycled nylon | 16-inch padded laptop pocket | Trolley sleeve

Best Organization

Troubadour carrier tote.

It has tons of pockets to stay naturally organized while traveling.

The bag might be too large to fit underneath an airplane seat.

Minimalist and practical, Troubadour’s Carrier Tote is our favorite bag for packing efficiently and staying organized on the go. The designated laptop pocket is padded and can fit devices up to 17 inches in width — the largest pocket size for laptops of all the bags recommended. In addition to the protective laptop pocket, the tote features a quick-access phone pocket; a medium-size zippered pocket for an e-reader; and several other slip pockets for items that can easily get lost at the bottom of a bag like charging cords, lip balm, and keys. The only possible downside to this sleek bag is that the 24-liter capacity and stiffer fabric makes it difficult to fit it underneath an airplane seat.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 7.5 inches | Recycled polyester, vegan leather | 17-inch laptop pocket

Best Foldable

Away the packable carryall.

It’s a very spacious tote that comes with a stuff sack to pack it away in a backpack or suitcase.

It has a flimsy shape, so small or heavy items fall to the bottom of the bag easily.

Away’s The Packable Carryall is the perfect packable tote bag to toss in a purse whether running errands or sightseeing in a city. The tote bag is incredibly spacious when it’s folded open, but it compresses down to a mere fraction of its usual size thanks to the lightweight recycled nylon material and stuff sack. Sometimes packable bags can lack travel-friendly features, so we love that the bag features a zippered top for security; a trolley sleeve for portability; and an interior zippered pocket for storing phones, wallets, and keys while on the go. To keep track of the stuff sack, there’s also a loop to secure the zippered pouch on the inside of the tote. The unstructured design of the tote means that small or heavy items with a pool at the bottom of the bag, but beach towels , jackets, or any bulkier items will fit perfectly and provide some structure to the bag.

The Details: 19.7 x 15 x 9 inches | Recycled nylon | Water resistant | Trolley sleeve

Other Travel Tote Bags We Liked

The tote bags below still came highly recommended for travelers, but didn’t quite make our list of winners.

Portland Leather Tote Bag : It’s a very portable tote bag due to the smaller size, but it isn’t the most practical for long trips with less storage and organizational features.

Bellroy Tokyo Tote : This bag has tons of pockets and storage for just about anything you would need while traveling, but it’s on the smaller side, so it could fill up quickly.

Ogio Rise Tote : The bag can be converted from a tote to a backpack, which can be helpful for travelers, but the drawstring opening is a slight drawback for security reasons.

To create this list of the best travel totes, T+L editors and trusted travel experts recommended their favorite bags they have tested on their own travel adventures. With over 30 totes tested, we whittled down our list of the best bags for any and all travelers based on capacity, portability, ease of use, and overall value. From sleek leather totes to convertible weekender bags, we handpicked various bags that we can’t recommend enough for outdoor activities, air travel, or commuting to the office.

Tips for Buying a Travel Tote

Buy for your intended activity.

Not all tote bags are best for certain types of travel, so it’s important to invest in a bag that meets your needs. Traveling somewhere wet and rainy? You’ll want to opt for a more rugged tote bag that features waterproof or resistant materials like nylon or polyester for protecting items. Leather tote bags work well for air travel or office days, but you’ll likely want to skip bringing it to the beach or for camping where a canvas tote will hold up much better to wear and tear.

Consider organization and size requirements

When it comes to traveling by air, you’ll want to look at dimensions, organization, and other helpful features like trolley sleeves, USB ports, and convertible straps. For outdoor activities like camping and beach days, a spacious and flexible tote bag can be helpful for packing bulky items. We recommend packable or foldable tote bags for travelers looking for a backup bag to keep in a purse or suitcase, rather than using it as a bag to commute or fly with since they can lack structure and organizational features.

Prioritize comfort

Tote bags can be hard on the shoulders and hands when carried for long periods of time (i.e., navigating an airport or while out and about), so we recommend looking for lightweight materials and padded straps to reduce the possible strain. Some tote bags come with convertible straps to carry the tote as a crossbody or backpack, so be sure to look for bags with modular designs or trolley sleeves to place the bag on a suitcase if you’re looking for better portability and versatility in a tote.

Frequently Asked Questions

While it depends on the size of a tote bag, more often than not, it will count as a personal item or possibly a carry-on bag if it’s large enough. A personal item usually has to fit underneath an airplane seat and if it doesn’t, it could qualify as a carry-on bag, so you’ll want to double-check the size restrictions of personal items for your specific airline since it varies greatly depending on the carrier.

Tote bags offer the ability to quickly and conveniently access items like a phone and wallet since the bag is kept closer to the front of your body compared to a backpack. Backpacks distribute the weight of your belongings better, but a comfortable tote bag should never be too cumbersome to carry. Look for features like padded handles or a convertible crossbody strap for comfort. Tote bags are also easier to take on and off while traveling, which is convenient when you’re on the go and maneuvering tight places such as airplanes, trains, and cars.

The Longchamp Le Pliage Bag Is the Perfect Tote Bag, Period

A Longchamp tote on a colorful background

Most of my favorite purchases have come from jumping on a hype bandwagon. I finally caved and bought Allbirds sneakers last year and—surprise!—they're now my favorite shoes. I bought Outdoor Voices' color-block 7/8 leggings after seeing so many stylish women wearing them around New York. I even own that one Amazon coat . Rarely is it that I find something on my own only to realize it's already a cult favorite. But that's exactly the case with my beloved Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag .

It was, first and foremost, a practical purchase. I had just started my freshman year of college, and I wanted to upgrade my JanSport backpack from high school for a more grown-up bag. I did a deep dive on tote bags , which lead me to the Le Pliage, a roomy nylon bag with leather straps and a single side pocket. It fit my books, my laptop, and my makeup case—good. The leather envelope closure, gold buttons, and logo zipper gave the otherwise plain bag the slightest touch of elegance, which was a plus. Here, I thought, was a bag that looked timeless but was purely useful.

Despite all my research, I didn't realize at the time the worldwide fan base Longchamp's Le Pliage had. It was only once I started carrying it that I noticed it everywhere —on my college campus, on the bus, in foreign countries. It felt as though I had entered a secret society, linking me to several thousand tote carriers who were clued in to the magic of this incredibly plain bag.

Since it launched in the nineties, Le Pliage has been one of Longchamp's best-selling bags. In 2017, Business of Fashion reported that the brand sold 11 per minute. A representative for Longchamp confirmed to Glamour that it has sold more than 30 million of Le Pliage totes to date.

Part of its popularity can be attributed to its celebrity fans. Kate Middleton famously carried Longchamp's tote in the early aughts. (She still carries them as the Duchess of Cambridge.) It's been spotted on the shoulders of It girls like Alexa Chung and Kendall Jenner. (The latter acts as the face of the brand .) Even Meghan Markle—long before she was linked to Prince Harry—was photographed with it slung over her shoulder.

There's more to its appeal than A-list sightings. Le Pliage is one of the more accessible bags sold by a designer brand. The small nylon totes start at $125; the large ones can go up to $190. It's stocked in all of the major department stores ( Nordstrom , Bloomingdale's , Neiman Marcus ) and on Amazon . (On all these sites, reviews number in the hundreds and are overwhelmingly positive. It's fairly common for customers to report that they own two or three.)

“The Longchamp Le Pilage is an iconic bag that is timeless and appeals to all ages," says Erica Russo, Bloomingdale’s vice president and fashion director of beauty and accessories. "Our customer loves the bag for its functionality, vibrant colors, and chic styling.”

Visit Longchamp's Instagram and you'll see that widespread appeal in action. For teens and young adults, it's among the affordable yet high-quality bags that are a first designer purchase; for people far into their careers, its size makes it ideal for carting supplies to work or travel necessities on the road.

Akari Furukawa, a college student in Cambridge, Massachusetts, owns three Le Pliage bags, two medium and one large. "I needed a bag that would fit my 12-inch Macbook, book, and agenda, while being sophisticated enough to be carried in formal settings as well as casual everyday use," she says. "I saw this bag in a department store, and I thought it was absolutely perfect for what I need."

Blogger Carly Heitlinger remembers buying her first Le Pliage 10 years ago. She's featured it on her site several times, and still gets questions from her readers about whether they should buy their own. "I think seeing me style Longchamps over the years and having them appear on my blog with various outfits—everything from a work-inspired look to a casual outfit as a tourist in Paris—really shows off its versatility," she says. "They're truly classic bags. And they're functional."

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Six years after purchasing my first Le Pliage, I've grown my collection: I now own one in navy (a gift from a family friend) and one in black (a gift to myself after a trip to Paris last fall). It's the bag that carries my laptop to work, and my weekender when I'm heading out of town for a quick trip. The simple, logo-free design matches everything I own. And with its weather-resistant coating, I know it's durable enough to take anywhere.

While I have a handful of other totes in my closet, I reach for Le Pliage more than any other. I think Heitlinger sums up my and so many other's loyalty to the nylon bag best: "Whereas other bags may be seen as classics, there's something timeless and unassuming about a Le Pliage." And that makes it the kind of tote I'll always have in my closet.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
