How to Write the Perfect Thank You Note for Your Travel Tour Guide

Going on a guided tour can be an amazing experience. A knowledgeable tour guide can really enhance your trip by providing context, stories, and insider information that allows you to get so much more out of visiting a new place. If you've just gotten back from a fantastic tour, one of the best ways to express your appreciation is to write your tour guide a thoughtful thank you note.

Today, we'll explore why taking the time to thank your tour guide is so important, provide tips for writing the perfect thank you message, and include thank you note examples and templates you can use. After reading, you'll know exactly how to craft a meaningful note to show your tour guide how much you appreciated their time and effort.

Why Send a Thank You Note to Your Tour Guide?

With how hectic life can be today, it's easy to move on from a great experience like a guided tour without expressing your gratitude. But taking just a few minutes to say thank you to your tour guide is so worthwhile, for several reasons:

  • It's a thoughtful way to show your appreciation. Tour guides work hard to plan and lead great tours. Thanking them will make them feel valued.
  • It can encourage great service in the future. Your note may inspire your guide to continue providing such excellent tours for future travelers.
  • It can help future travelers. Many guides proudly display thank you notes. Your kind words might sway other travelers to take a tour with that guide.
  • It's good karma. Expressing gratitude leaves both you and your tour guide feeling happy and fulfilled.
  • It stands out. In an age of rushed communication, a handwritten thank you card or letter makes a big impression.
  • It may get you perks. Some tour companies reward guides for getting great customer feedback. Your note could lead to the guide getting a reward that motivates them even more.
  • It's simply the right thing to do. When someone does something nice for you, you should say thanks. It's common courtesy.

In short, taking a few minutes to write a thoughtful thank you note gives your tour guide a valued token of appreciation while also spreading positivity. So don't skip this gesture - you'll be glad you made the effort.

While thank you notes take just a little time, composing one that really makes an impact does require forethought and effort. Follow these tips to craft the ideal thank you message for your tour guide:

1. Send it soon after your tour

To maximize the delight your note causes, send it soon after your tour ends while everything is still fresh in your mind. Shooting a quick email from the airport or writing a card from your hotel room lets your excitement and gratitude come through. If a little time has passed, just explain you've been meaning to write since you got home.

2. Use a handwritten card or letter when possible

In today's digital world, a handwritten thank you card or letter stands out - and shows you were willing to take the time to write a thoughtful message. It also makes keeping and displaying the note easier for your guide. If sending a handwritten note isn't realistic, an email is still appreciated.

3. Start by thanking them directly for the tour

Begin your note by directly thanking your guide for the excellent tour they provided. If you can, refer to them by name. Some examples:

  • Thank you so much for the fantastic tour of Charleston yesterday, Lee!
  • Hannah, I just wanted to thank you for the incredible tour through the Hermitage Museum.
  • Marco, thank you for providing such an amazing tour of Rome for our group last week!

Starting with a direct thank you sets a grateful tone from the beginning.

4. Mention a few specific things you appreciated

Go beyond a generic thank you by mentioning one or two things your guide did that really enhanced your experience. Did they share great stories? Help you discover hidden gems? Make key sightseeing arrangements? Mentioning a few specifics makes your note more meaningful.

5. Share the impact the tour had on you

Letting your guide know about the difference their tour made gives them a sense of purpose. You might explain how much you learned, how your experiences were deepened, or how they brought a destination to life for you. Be specific about the moments and sights that really made an impression.

6. Say you’ll recommend them in the future

It means a lot to guides to know you’ll recommend them to friends and family if they ever visit the same place. Saying you'd book another tour with them or request them again next time reassures them about the great job they did.

7. Add a memorable quote or fun memory

Did your guide say something funny or have an insightful quote that stuck with you? Including a quote or fun memory from your time together personalizes your note and reminds them of the rapport you built. Just a sentence or two creates a nice touch.

8. Close with a final gracious statement

End your thank you letter on another grateful note, perhaps expressing hope you’ll travel together again or that they’ll continue enlightening travelers. Some closing examples:

  • Thanks again for everything! You're fantastic at what you do.
  • I’m so grateful we had you as our guide. You made the trip unforgettable!
  • I hope our paths cross again sometime. All the best!

With a thoughtful closing sentence, you can wrap up your note warmly and memorably.

Thank You Note Examples and Templates

Reading sample thank you notes can help spark ideas for your own message. Here are a few thank you card examples you could adapt:

Dear James,

I just wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for the wonderful tour of Berlin you provided us last week. Thanks to your vast knowledge of the city and passion for sharing it, our family got so much more out of our time there. I especially appreciated learning the history behind so many of the sights and hearing your stories about growing up in the city.

Our favorite memory was when you arranged for us to meet that street artist in the East Side Gallery and see him working on adding to the wall. That made such an impression on the kids and was something we never would have experienced without you. Please know we’ll be recommending your tours to anyone we know visiting Berlin in the future! You really made our trip extraordinary.

With gratitude, Alice

Hey Amanda!

I'm back home from the amazing long weekend in New Orleans you showed us around. I just had to take a minute to properly thank you for the spectacular tour. Your knowledge of the food scene totally made the trip - Anthony and I definitely would've missed out on all those incredible restaurants without your guidance! Plus, your stories about the city's history brought everything to life for us in a way we never could've gotten from a normal tour.

Thanks for making what could've been just another weekend getaway into a truly unforgettable New Orleans experience. We'll be suggesting your tours to anyone we know heading your way. Please keep doing what you do so well!

Gratefully, Jane

What an absolute pleasure it was exploring Yosemite with you this past weekend! Thank you immensely for serving as our guide and introducing us to the wonders of the park.

Your passion for Yosemite came through in every fascinating story and trail recommendation. Thanks to you, our hike up to Vernal Falls became a history lesson, nature walk, and photography class all rolled into one. And you didn't just show us the popular sights - those hidden gems like the wildflower meadow and glacier-carved valleys made this trip so special.

We couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable, patient, and caring guide to make our Yosemite adventure everything we hoped for. I'll be sure to request you next time I visit the park and will spread the word about your excellent tours.

Warmly, Brandon

Remember the Importance of Thanking Your Guide

The tips and examples above should help you craft a thoughtful, memorable note your tour guide will genuinely appreciate receiving. While it's easy to forget, taking just a few minutes to write a thank you card or email after your trip wraps up is such a considerate gesture with so many benefits.

Beyond expressing your personal gratitude, thanking great guides helps encourage exceptional service for future travelers as well. Remembering the effort your guide put into making your tour special and letting them know you appreciate it is the right thing to do. Plus, imagining their smile when reading your gratitude will surely make your day brighter as well.

So next time you take an amazing tour, be sure not to miss the opportunity to send your guide a heartfelt thank you message. The little time this takes is repaid manifold in goodwill - for your guide, the tour company, and the whole travel industry. The end result of brighter days for both you and your guide is well worth it.

Karen N. reviews Prayut ‘Yuut’ Rueangsaeng

Two guides, both amazing!

I had two free days in Bangkok. One day I had guide “Nina” and the other day I had guide “Yuut”.

Nina was like a best friend I’d not met yet; she was super friendly and personable and took great care to ensure I was happy with our day together.

Yuut was very knowledge about temple and Buddhism, given that he was a monk for 10 years.

I enjoyed both days with both guides immensely. Also, communications from Num at the office were great.

Highly recommend!

Hector I. reviews Charinee ‘Oil’ Jitburus

hector with his private Thai guide

My day started with the tour guide being on time and telling me about our plan for the day, as we arrived to the tiger zoo it was great since I was the first one there.

We then went to go eat and had a great lunch meal.

Our driver was great as well.

I would like to give thanks to both my guide and driver for making my day great.

Provided excellent service.

Dan D. reviews Pudtipong ‘Jean’ Nawasornyuttana

We booked Jean using the website. This was very easy to do and emails were answered is a reasonable timeframe.

Jean met us at our hotel and we headed out to see the sights we had previously mentioned we wanted to see. Jean’s English was very good. He had lots of interesting things to tell us about Bangkok, the culture and the history as we made our way around Bangkok during the day, he also picked out a good place for lunch.

I am really pleased we used a guide for visiting the sites, not knowing much about the history or culture it made it much more interesting than if we had gone on our own. Also as first time visitors it was much easier to get to all the places we wanted to visit than trying to work it out ourselves.

Andrew C. reviews Prapaiporn ‘Peach’ Honghem

We had a wonderful day and Peach our guide showed us the highlights of Bangkok using the trains, boats, Tuk Tuk’s and walking.

She was very knowledgeable and friendly and tailored the tour to meet our needs.

We would highly recommend Peach and this tour.

Abbie M. reviews Waree ‘Apple’ Singhanart

I’m impressed, elated, and honored to leave my first impression feedback for Apple today. Apple is a special young lady, she has an amazing soul and the ability to connect with people on an intellectual and spiritual level.

I believe I was analyzed by Apple about 30 minutes into us meeting and she quickly discerned my personality and was able to recommend places that I never would have thought to go.

Prior to that I had an idea of the things I wanted to see and was accommodated but I am glad that I also had enough faith in my friend Apple to lead the way to hidden gems in Bangkok not in any tourist handbook.

Hanging out with Apple all day was like hanging out with a long lost friend! She really made me feel very special and was intuitively attentive to my needs.

My tour guide the day prior was Joker who was also exceptional and amazing, and provided wonderful information.

Again, I really appreciate meeting the amazing tour guides because they reflect wonderfully on this company.

I will definitely not only recommend this company to anybody I know coming to Bangkok but would most certainly call when I am back in Thailand in March next year.

I hope to secure Apple for my tour guide again, she is that amazing!!

Juliette W. reviews Charinee ‘Oil’ Jitburus

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Oil. She was warm, friendly and very engaging with both us and our two daughters.

Oil not only guided us around the city, she also spent time educating us about Thai traditions and cultures which we all loved.

Thank you Oil!

Standlay B. reviews Waree ‘Apple’ Singhanart

Our day in Bangkok with Apple was far beyond any of our high expectations. Easy arrangements and excellent follow through and confirmations made the booking procedure painless.

Most importantly, our guide was exceptional! Apple’s amazing knowledge and enthusiastic willingness to share that knowledge with my husband and I (first time visitors to Bangkok) made our day with her one that will not be forgotten.

Bangkok is an amazing city, and I cannot think of a better way to get a wonderful taste of what it has to offer than with Apple…we could not have asked for more. And just to add one more thing… in addition to knowing the city like the back of her hand and speaking Thai (which was invaluable in our dealings with locals during our day), her English is SUPERB!

Apple is the best.

Jisel G. reviews Prayut ‘Yuut’ Rueangsaeng

My guide was Yuut.

He was very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable and was able to give me and my son a lot of insight about the culture and religious beliefs in Thailand.

Thank you so much!

Bryan J. reviews Prapaiporn ‘Peach’ Honghem

With my guide, Peach, a great day , amazing temple and palace, the lovely house of Jim Thompson, traveling along the river.

I recommend this guide which name is Peach for her happiness, kindness and knowledge.

Faye A. reviews Pudtipong ‘Jean’ Nawasornyuttana

We booked three days of touring with “Your Thai Guide” at the last minute and they were able to accommodate us. Our guides were Jean and Natt. Both very knowledgeable, reliable and friendly. They were always there when they said they would be. They arranged a driver and events outside the city for us as well as getting us last minute tickets to Thai kickboxing which was great.

They took us around using public transportation which worked out great. We were there during the protests and we felt very comfortable. Using public transportation made us more comfortable getting around on our own too.

They were always willing to make any changes to the day that we requested. They made our stay in Bangkok fun, productive and diverse. I would use them again any day! 5 stars from Fay

Allen L. reviews Prayut ‘Yuut’ Rueangsaeng

I was very fortunate to be able to book Prayut ‘Yuut’ Rueangsaeng at the last minute as a guide to Ayutthaya.

His knowledge of the history of the old capital of Ayutthaya is great, and he is able to offer insight that no other guide can, thanks to his 10 years as a Buddhist monk.

Yuut would be an excellent guide for anyone who plans on visiting any of the hundreds of temples in and around Bangkok due to his deep understanding of Buddhism, and I plan on hiring him again on my next visit to Bangkok!

Naomi W. reviews Pudtipong ‘Jean’ Nawasornyuttana

My husband and I used Guide Jean, who made our Thailand tour one to remember.

He was very knowledgeable and was flexible when we changed our initial itinerary.

I would highly recommend.

Colin H. reviews Prapaiporn ‘Peach’ Honghem

Peach was such an excellent guide for the perfect day in Bangkok.

She made sure I was able to fit in all the activities I wanted, and she was so knowledgeable about Bangkok history and culture.

It truly was like having a local best friend for a day.

I would highly recommend this tour for anyone, especially if they only have a short time in the city.

Carlotta P. reviews Waree ‘Apple’ Singhanart

We would like to thank APPLE, our private guide in Bangkok, for the lovely tour we got last week.

She had been able to accommodate every our single request, from the places we would like to visit to the food and refreshing beverages we needed on our way and in managing the time.

APPLE got a degree in history and it made her the best guide we could desire in visiting the National Museum and temples.

Apple is nice, gracious and very professional, we felt in good hands and pampered.

Next time we will go back to Bangkok we will going to ask for her again even to visit the historical sites around Bangkok.

Jelena K. reviews Charinee ‘Oil’ Jitburus

We had an absolutely brilliant tour, tailor made just for us with fantastic tour guide named Oil. She was very helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant overall. We had no problems getting the tickets, taxi, lunch or anything whatsoever, as she would take care of it.

Would definitely recommend her to anyone who wants to have great time and learn something new! Thank you Oil!

Rajanikanth M. reviews Waree ‘Apple’ Singhanart

Our guide who goes by the lovely name of Apple, was absolutely amazing. Post booking the trip, a mail was sent to me asking about the places I wished to see. While the trip organizers will organize the itinerary, it will be good to have your own view as well.

The tour was very well organised. We started the day with taking a river cruise to visit the Lad Mayom Floating Market. The cruise was filled with lovely sights of old houses, riverian lifestyle, farms and even a little episode of feeding huge fish that live in the river. The Lad Mayom market itself is a fabulous feast to the eyes with its food stalls, souvenir shops and bargain stores

Post this visit, we paid a visit to the Wat Pho and the Wat Arun temples. Apple made this trip very special and I must mention her especially. She chose a great place for us to savour authentic and lip-smacking Thai food.

While we aren’t avid shoppers, the trip ended with shopping at the MBK shopping mall. A day very well spent, filled with highlights

I would highly recommend this.

And thanks again, Apple.

Annie C. reviews Charinee ‘Oil’ Jitburus

annie enjoying her day tour in bangkok with her private guide

My guide, Oil was exactly what I needed for this trip. Oil was very accommodating, and able to answer any questions someone like me who knew very little about Thailand’s culture and history. She was extremely attentive, and very personable. She seemed to understand my need intuitively – Never push too much, but never failed to mention what is possible. Oil helped many details without much fuss, so that each day was quite memorable in its own. We become so close, we have exchanged many fun facts about our background. In my options, this is the best possible cultural exchange anyone can share!

From my traveling experience, I understand the tour guide’s importance:  It can influence visitor’s perception and attitude towards the country. If that is reasonable assumption, then Oil had done a wonderful job of helping me to see Thai as a rich heritages of cultures, history as well most hospitable people nation I’ve ever visited. And how about the Thai cuisine? I had so much fun tasting various food with Oil! For that I thank Oil!

She was most professional, and knowledgeable, always on time. She was always very clear about the daily itinerary. Knew a way to save time and cost and she made an extra consideration to make me comfortable at all time.

I would highly recommend your company to anyone traveling to Thailand. As a matter of fact, I am already started to plan something this year or next, and definitely call you back.

Sarah J. reviews Pudtipong ‘Jean’ Nawasornyuttana

I would definitely recommend Guide Jean.

He was polite, knowledgeable, and friendly. Especially good if you’re trying to see and do a lot of things in a short period of time.

Delphine W. reviews Prapaiporn ‘Peach’ Honghem

For our first day in Bangkok, we booked a full day tour with our tour guide, Mrs. Peach. She picked us up at the hotel and during this amazing day she showed us the Grand Palace and the main temples of Bangkok.

Beside the historical locations, Peach gave us an excellent insight into the Thai way of living and the Thai culture. For lunch we visited a typical Thai restaurant with live music. And during the day we used all kind of transportation which are typical for this town, such as boat and tuc-tuc.

During the walks, there was plenty of time for asking questions about Bangkok, its history and the way of living of the “normal people”.

Christie S. reviews Prayut ‘Yuut’ Rueangsaeng

We just wanted to say thank you for a fantastic day with Yuut on December 31st, he was a fantastic guide and a great person.

We’ve learned so much from him and could not imagine going through the temples without him and his knowledge… it was a wonderful day.

Victoria O. reviews Pudtipong ‘Jean’ Nawasornyuttana

We had three days in Bangkok and YTG really helped us to make the most of them. From the first they were incredibly quick and helpful with the booking – I did most of it on my phone in Dubai airport using wifi! They sent us details and pictures of our guides in advance so we knew who we were meeting and when, really useful.

Over three days we saw everything we wanted to at a sensible relaxed pace – impressive given how much was on our list. All of the guides we used had great English and with their differing styles put us at ease instantly and built quick rapports.

Joker was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly a very experienced guide – very considerate of the heat and the fact that Bangkok was completely unknown to us. He was a fantastic guide, everything we could have hoped for and his photos are amongst our favorites from the trip.

Jean was really easy going and took us to the best Pad Thai restaurant we’ve ever been to. His knowledge was great and he was fabulous at answering all our questions.

Nettie was a delight – so full of enthusiasm and just what we needed on our last day. She was very helpful and seemed to take as much enjoyment in visiting the sites as we did which was a joy.

Regula H. reviews Prapaiporn ‘Peach’ Honghem

Absolutely worthwhile!

We had a great day with our guide Peach who was just excellent. She took us to the grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun.

The longboat trip on the channel was superb.

Peach had lots of nice ideas and surprises in between- we were happy to spend a day with here.

Thanks again, Peach !!!

Gregg C. reviews Waree ‘Apple’ Singhanart

Spent two days with Apple in Bangkok.

She was very receptive to what we wanted to see and put together a fantastic itinerary. She made sure we got,to spend as much time as we wanted at the locations we had outlined and added some great sights we weren’t aware of. The experience exceeded our expectations and it was clear she wanted to do everything she could to make our time in Bangkok a great experience.

She definitely succeeded. She was very knowledgeable about the sights we were seeing. She made traveling around Bangkok easy to navigate. She spoke exceptional English. We wanted to go off the beaten path to visit a shop where they make hand made metal bowls for monks.

It’s a Thai craft that is slowly disappearing. She helped translate the experience as the man in the workshop described his process. We mentioned wanting to purchase some authentic Thai silk. To our surprise she took us to a silk weaver who actually had worked with Jim Thompson and again translated his explanations of the weaving process as well as his experience with the silk industry when Jim Thompson had lived across the canal.

It was an amazing surprise and experience of a life time. We visited the markets and Apple did all the haggling for us getting us the Thai discount lol. It was a ton of fun. Couldn’t have asked for a better time.

Thanks Apple!

What can I say? Your Thai Guide provided me three days of absolutely spectacular service. It feels like you’re spending a day with an old friend.

I thoroughly recommend the services of Apple, Nina and Yuut. Each of them made me smile and laugh throughout the day and they clearly love the city they live in.

My time in Bangkok has been made so much better by Your Thai Guide.

To have a Unique Tour

You need a unique guide, jewish tours, christian tours, luxury tours.

I was born in 1960, am married to my wonderful (and successful…) wife, and we have three children that are much better than me!

In July 2009, I was officially certified as a licensed guide by the Ministry of Tourism – and if frequent traveler miles were awarded for all the kilometers I have accumulated on the road in Israel, I could have taken my entire family to the Caribbean – first class.

How is my way different from other tour guides with numerous years of experience? The main difference is attitude. I don’t try to teach my guests, and don’t test their ability to absorb information. I just ensure that their visit to Israel is a memorable experience. That’s the difference!

Pros + Cons: Travel Guide Services

Consider integrating a travel guide into your next trip, or try a fully guided tour to help you ease into international travel.

This summer, I took a guided educational tour of Australia and New Zealand with my brother, mother and a group of almost forty travelers from our hometown in Tennessee. The group was a combination of high school students and adults with almost a one-to-one ratio. On the trip I held a koala (what a dream!), snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, toured the Sydney Opera House, visited Hobbiton, luged down a small mountain, learned first-hand about Djabuki and Maori cultures, surfed for the first time and ate some of the best food I've ever had. Luke, our amazing tour guide, was there all along the way to point us to the best food and attractions, answer our crazy American questions and teach us about Australian Rules football.

The trip was undoubtedly worth the price, and I know it could have been years before I would have planned and executed it on my own, especially as a beginner international traveler. Is a tour service the best way to experience Australia? Doesn't matter. It's the way that got us there. Of course, a fully planned and guided tour shouldn't always be your go-to for travel. Independent travel has so many virtues and benefits that can't be overlooked, but there are ways to incorporate guides without sacrificing these. Whatever your reason for traveling, there's likely some kind of guide service that can add to your experience.

Local Guides

So you're a budget independent traveler who scoffs at big tour groups and actively runs the other direction. I get it; you want to escape the tourist traps and really get to know a place. There are tours for you, too. Think small and local. Often found with a simple call to a tourism department, small operations offer day guiding and walking tours that cover significant historical sites. These guided tours can usually be booked day-of or at least the day before, offering flexibility and spontaneity to planning-averse travelers.

Local and personal guides are usually passionate about their towns and very well versed in local knowledge. Not only can they teach you about local history, culture and lore but also provide excellent advice on restaurants, bars and off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Adventure Guiding + Active Tours

Backpacking in the Andes, mountaineering in the Alps, rafting the Grand Canyon, cycling the West Coast, climbing in Patagonia — I go could on with the list of adventures I would love to have but am not experienced enough to undertake on my own. Adventure guiding services offered by REI , Adventure Unbound and thousands of local outdoor guiding services are integral to anyone who wants a unique and challenging outdoor experience but can't devote time to tackle it on their own.

Enjoying Hobbiton on a semi-guided tour.

Enjoying Hobbiton on a semi-guided tour.

Too many people exclude themselves from incredible experiences like summiting a difficult 14'er or rafting treacherous rivers or camping in a desert because they lack experience. A proper guiding service will make up for inexperience and help you achieve your goal with the least possible risk. They can be hired for any level of adventure and budget from one of the 7 Summits to an overnight hike in an unknown part of the world.

Clay Britt, a friend who has traveled internationally on a budget over the last few years, prefers to rely on himself and knowledge picked up from locals on his adventures, but he makes a few exceptions for guiding services.

Clay says, "I used a guide on a five-day hike on the Salkantay Trek in Peru and on a camping trip in the Sahara Desert [in] Morocco. There is a certain sense of accomplishment when you complete something without help. However, for me there are certain cases where a guide is more beneficial in the long run. When trails are not easily navigable, and the knowledge of a local guide can provide you with more time enjoying the journey, I think a guide service is the best option."

On the other side of the coin, too many inexperienced people attempt ambitious and dangerous feats without guides and face severe consequences. Guided trips are the smartest way for most of us to check big adventures off the list.

Photography Workshops + Tours

Offered in hundreds of locations by as many professional photographers, these workshops satiate both the travel and photography bugs. Hobbyist and amateur photographers (pretty much anyone who knows how to use their camera) can spend 5-10 days developing their skills while exploring a new region or country with an experienced landscape or street photographer.

Admiring the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Opera House

Admiring the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Leading photographers have often been to the destination multiple times and scouted for the most beautiful landscapes and the best street photography areas. You'll be on location every morning for sunrise, and you'll set up every evening to capture sunsets, but between those key timeslots, some trips allow you to enjoy the city, town or park you're visiting. Think of the time in-between shooting as your personal exploration time. A few major travel destinations for photography workshops include Iceland , Cuba , the Pacific Northwest and China .

Student Tours

Parents of students, pay attention. Student tours offered by companies like Education First and Brightspark can ignite a passion for travel and cultural education in many young people before they're old enough to travel independently. These tours often cover everything you would need to worry about: flights, transportation, lodging, most meals and great activities.

Kayla Kitts, managing editor at Discovery who has traveled in 13 countries on both independent and guided trips, first travelled internationally as a student ambassador to France, Italy and Malta.

"This trip ultimately fed my passion for traveling and inspired me to take even more international trips," Kayla says.

After a few guided and independent trips, Kayla was able to pinpoint her preferred style of unplanned and laid-back travel.

While the benefits of international tours and travel for students are numerous, a few stand out. They will learn how to adapt when surrounded by different cultures, better understand diverse cultures, expand their perspectives of the world and develop meaningful connections with friends and fellow travelers.

Yes, these tours can be pricey, but the value can't be beat. Tour groups often host fundraisers and recommend grants and scholarships to ease the burden of cost. When possible, these tours are great opportunities for parents to join and share a potentially life-changing experience with their children.

Educational + Cultural Tours for Adults

Although some people can book their first flight ever, head across the world, plunge into an unknown culture and thrive, most of us have to work up to independent travel, especially international travel. Fully guided tours are perfect for anyone wanting to break into the travel world but nervous about their first trip. While great for first-time travelers of all ages, middle-aged to elderly adults who are finally finding themselves with time to travel may especially benefit from these.

Road Scholar , Go Ahead Tours (a subgroup of Education First) and Artisans of Leisure are three notable companies offering guided tours to adults. Major museums like The MET and Smithsonian also offer tours to unique places. Like educational tours for students, these can come with a hefty price tag, but again, consider the value. Were you to spend weeks planning and booking the same trip with all the same experiences, opportunities and amenities, you will likely be paying the same, if not more.

These tours reduce your planning time to none, save you the hassle of figuring out transportation, solve language barrier issues, provide an opportunity to make great friends with fellow travelers and maximize the amount of experiences you'll have in a short period of time.

However, there are potential downsides to consider. If you prefer spontaneous and flexible travel, most of these trips aren't for you, but day guides and local tours can still offer so much.

Travel guides can and should be used by everyone to enhance an experience, even highly independent and spontaneous travelers. From education to adventure to culture, different levels of guiding and the right guide will help new travelers find their way and add value for experienced travelers.

  • Physical Fitness: Tour guiding often involves physical activities like hiking, walking, or cycling. Being physically fit allows you to endure the demands of the job and provide assistance if needed.
  • Organizational Skills: Planning and coordinating tours require excellent organizational skills. From managing logistics to creating detailed itineraries, staying organized ensures smooth and enjoyable experiences for your guests.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Building rapport and creating a positive rapport with your guests is crucial. The ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and make them feel comfortable is a valuable asset.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: As a tour guide, you may encounter unexpected situations or challenges. Quick thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving skills will help you handle such situations with ease and maintain guest satisfaction.

While academic qualifications may not be mandatory, pursuing relevant courses or certifications in tourism, hospitality, or outdoor activities can enhance your credibility. Additionally, gaining practical experience through internships, volunteering, or working as an assistant guide can provide valuable insights and practical skills.

By possessing these requirements and qualifications, you will be well-prepared to embark on a successful career as a tour guide, delivering unforgettable experiences to your guests.

Researching and Planning

One of the most critical aspects of being a tour guide is the ability to research and plan captivating and well-organized tours. Your guests rely on you to provide them with a seamless and unforgettable experience. Here are some essential steps to follow when researching and planning your tours:

  • Destination Familiarization: Familiarize yourself with the destination you will be guiding in. Research its history, culture, attractions, and hidden gems. Get to know the local customs, traditions, and etiquettes to ensure a respectful and immersive experience for your guests.
  • Understanding Your Audience: Determine the demographics, interests, and preferences of your target audience. Will your guests be adventure enthusiasts, history buffs, or nature lovers? Tailor your tours accordingly to provide a personalized and engaging experience.
  • Selecting Key Sites and Activities: Identify the must-see sites and attractions in the destination. Consider both popular landmarks and off-the-beaten-path locations to provide a well-rounded experience. Research and select exciting activities and experiences that align with your guests’ interests.
  • Creating a Detailed Itinerary: Craft a detailed itinerary that outlines the day-to-day activities, including transportation, accommodations, meal options, and specific timeframes for each activity. Build in flexibility for unexpected changes or additional opportunities that may arise.
  • Ensuring Safety and Accessibility: Prioritize the safety and accessibility of your tours. Research hazard-prone areas, weather conditions, and any potential health risks. Account for the physical abilities and limitations of your guests, providing suitable alternatives or adjustments when necessary.
  • Engaging Guides and Experts: Connect with local guides or experts who can provide unique insights and enhance your guests’ experience. Collaborating with knowledgeable individuals adds depth and authenticity to your tours.
  • Considering Logistics and Timing: Pay attention to logistical aspects, such as transportation arrangements, ticket bookings, and crowd management. Plan your tours to avoid peak tourist seasons or crowded times to ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable experience for your guests.

Remember to continuously update your knowledge by staying informed about current events, new attractions, and changing regulations. Embrace feedback from previous tours to refine and improve your planning process. By conducting thorough research and careful planning, you can create tours that leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Creating Engaging Tours

As a tour guide, it is your responsibility to create engaging and immersive experiences for your guests. By curating tours that leave a lasting impression, you can ensure their satisfaction and increase the likelihood of them recommending your services. Here are some tips to help you create captivating and memorable tours:

  • Storytelling: Narrate captivating stories and anecdotes about the destination and its attractions. Make history come alive, add local legends, or share personal experiences to engage your guests emotionally and intellectually.
  • Interactive Experiences: Provide opportunities for your guests to actively participate and engage with the destination. Incorporate interactive elements like hands-on activities, tastings, or cultural demonstrations to create a deeper connection and understanding.
  • Sensory Experiences: Appeal to your guests’ senses by highlighting the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures of the destination. Encourage them to fully immerse themselves in the local culture and environment.
  • Variety of Activities: Offer a variety of activities to cater to different interests and preferences. Whether it’s hiking, biking, exploring historical sites, or indulging in culinary delights, provide a diverse range of experiences to appeal to a broader audience.
  • Flexibility and Spontaneity: While it’s essential to have a well-structured itinerary, leave room for flexibility and spontaneity. Embrace unexpected opportunities or interests that arise during the tour and adapt your plans accordingly to provide a memorable and personalized experience.
  • Engaging with Locals: Encourage interactions between your guests and the local community. Arrange visits to local markets, workshops, or community initiatives where they can engage with locals, learn about their daily lives, and support local businesses.
  • Unveiling Hidden Gems: Go beyond the typical tourist hotspots and unveil hidden gems that showcase the destination’s unique charm and character. Whether it’s a secluded beach, a secret viewpoint, or a lesser-known historical site, surprise your guests with hidden treasures.
  • Share Insider Tips: Provide insider tips and recommendations to make your guests’ experience even more enriching. Share your favorite local restaurants, shops, or lesser-known trails, allowing them to discover the destination like a local.

Remember, the key to creating engaging tours is to cater to your guests’ interests, evoke their curiosity, and create a sense of wonder and excitement. By incorporating storytelling, interactive experiences, and a variety of activities, you can create tours that leave a lasting impact and keep your guests coming back for more unforgettable adventures.

Effective Communication Skills

As a tour guide, effective communication is the key to engaging and connecting with your guests. It allows you to share information, convey your passion for the destination, and create an enjoyable and informative experience. Here are some essential communication skills to master:

  • Clarity and Enunciation: Speak clearly and enunciate your words to ensure that your guests can understand you easily. Use simple language and avoid jargon or complex terminology that may be unfamiliar to your audience.
  • Active Listening: Practice active listening by giving your full attention to your guests. Encourage them to ask questions or share their thoughts and opinions and respond attentively. This helps create a positive and interactive atmosphere.
  • Body Language: Pay attention to your body language, as it can greatly impact how your message is received. Maintain an open and welcoming posture, use appropriate gestures, and make eye contact to establish a connection with your guests.
  • Use of Visuals and Props: Support your verbal communication with visual aids and props. Maps, photos, or physical objects can enhance understanding and make your explanations more engaging and memorable.
  • Adaptability: Adapt your communication style to suit the needs of your guests. Consider their language proficiency, cultural background, and any accessibility requirements. Ensure that everyone can fully engage and understand the information you are sharing.
  • Personalization: Tailor your communication to your audience by using personal anecdotes, addressing individuals by name, or referring to their interests. This personal touch creates a connection and makes the experience more memorable.
  • Storytelling Skills: Master the art of storytelling to captivate your guests’ attention. Use vivid descriptions, emotions, and suspense to bring the destination to life and create a memorable experience.
  • Engage with Humor: Incorporate humor into your communication to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Light-hearted jokes or funny anecdotes can help break the ice, maintain interest, and foster a positive connection with your guests.

Remember to gauge your guests’ engagement and adjust your communication as needed. Ask for feedback and encourage them to share their thoughts and questions throughout the tour. By honing your communication skills, you can ensure a memorable and engaging experience for your guests, leaving them with a deeper appreciation for the destination and their time with you.

Building Rapport with Guests

Building a strong rapport with your guests is essential for creating a positive and memorable experience. When guests feel comfortable and connected with their tour guide, they are more likely to engage, ask questions, and fully embrace the journey. Here are some tips to help you build rapport with your guests:

  • Warm Welcome: Start the tour with a warm and friendly greeting. Make eye contact, smile, and introduce yourself to create a welcoming atmosphere from the very beginning.
  • Active Engagement: Engage with your guests throughout the tour by asking open-ended questions, encouraging their participation, and actively listening to their responses. This shows genuine interest and makes them feel valued.
  • Personalize the Experience: Take the time to learn your guests’ names and use them during interactions. Remember their interests or special occasions they may be celebrating. Personalizing the experience makes them feel special and acknowledged.
  • Share Personal Stories: Share personal anecdotes or experiences related to the destination or the tour activities. This creates a connection and allows guests to see you as not just a guide but also a fellow traveler.
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Show empathy by understanding and addressing your guests’ needs and concerns. Be attentive to their emotions and adapt your approach accordingly. This helps create a comfortable and supportive environment for open communication.
  • Respect Cultural Differences: Be mindful of the cultural diversity within your group. Respect different beliefs, customs, and values, and encourage guests to share their own cultural backgrounds to foster a sense of inclusivity and appreciation.
  • Be Approachable: Be approachable and accessible to your guests. Encourage them to ask questions, seek guidance, or share their thoughts and experiences. Showing a willingness to interact and help creates a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Show Genuine Enthusiasm: Express your passion and enthusiasm for the destination and the tour activities. Your genuine excitement will be contagious and inspire guests to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Remain flexible and adaptable to meet the individual needs and preferences of your guests. Be open to suggestions, adjust the pace if necessary, and accommodate reasonable requests to ensure their comfort and satisfaction.

Remember, building rapport requires genuine interest, active engagement, and a willingness to connect with your guests on a personal level. By establishing a strong rapport, you create a trusting and enjoyable atmosphere that enhances the overall tour experience for everyone involved.

Handling Difficult Situations

As a tour guide, it is essential to be prepared for and effectively handle difficult situations that may arise during your tours. Whether it’s a sudden change in weather, a medical emergency, or guest dissatisfaction, your ability to stay calm, proactive, and empathetic is crucial. Here are some tips for effectively handling difficult situations:

  • Remain Calm and Composed: Stay calm and composed, even in challenging situations. Your guests will look to you for guidance and reassurance, so maintaining a calm demeanor helps instill confidence and minimize panic.
  • Assess the Situation: Quickly assess the situation and prioritize the safety and well-being of your guests. Identify any immediate risks or concerns and take necessary steps to address them promptly.
  • Communicate Clearly: Effectively communicate with your guests, providing clear instructions and information about the situation at hand. Keep them informed of any changes, updates, or alternative plans, ensuring they feel informed and involved.
  • Show Empathy and Support: Display empathy and understanding towards your guests’ concerns or discomfort. Listen attentively, acknowledge their feelings, and address their needs to the best of your ability. Offer support and reassurance throughout the situation.
  • Follow Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and protocols specific to the destination or activity. This includes knowing the location of emergency services, medical facilities, and evacuation routes.
  • Seek Expert Advice if Needed: If the situation requires specialized knowledge or assistance, seek advice from local authorities, medical professionals, or relevant experts. Act promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of your guests.
  • Maintain Open Communication: Encourage guests to voice their concerns or questions openly. Listen attentively, respond empathetically, and address their concerns transparently. Open communication helps build trust and allows for timely resolution of issues.
  • Provide Alternative Options: In case of unexpected changes or disruptions, offer alternative options or activities to make up for any inconvenience. This demonstrates your commitment to ensuring your guests have a satisfactory experience, even in challenging circumstances.
  • Document and Report: Keep a record of any incidents, complaints, or feedback received during the tour. This information will be valuable for improving future tours and providing insights to your organization, if applicable.
  • Learn from the Experience: Reflect on difficult situations and learn from them to enhance your future tour planning and management. Evaluate what worked well and identify areas for improvement, ensuring that you are better prepared for similar situations in the future.

Remember, while handling difficult situations can be challenging, your ability to remain calm, communicate effectively, and prioritize the safety and well-being of your guests is vital. By demonstrating empathy, proactivity, and professionalism, you can navigate through challenging circumstances and ensure a positive experience for your guests.

Ensuring Guest Safety and Satisfaction

As a tour guide, the safety and satisfaction of your guests should always be a top priority. By implementing proactive measures and creating a positive environment, you can ensure that your guests have a safe and satisfying experience. Here are some key aspects to consider:

  • Thorough Risk Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment before each tour to identify potential hazards and develop appropriate safety measures. Consider factors such as weather conditions, terrain, activities, and the physical capabilities of your guests.
  • Provide Safety Briefings: Start each tour with a safety briefing to educate your guests about any potential risks, safety protocols, and emergency procedures. Make sure they know how to use any equipment provided and encourage them to ask questions or express any concerns.

Maintaining Professionalism and Ethics

As a tour guide, maintaining professionalism and ethical standards is crucial for building trust with your guests and ensuring a positive experience. Upholding a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct not only reflects positively on you but also contributes to the reputation of the entire tourism industry. Here are some key principles to guide your behavior:

  • Expertise and Knowledge: Continuously update and expand your knowledge about the destinations you guide in, including history, culture, and current affairs. Be well-informed and able to provide accurate and insightful information to your guests.
  • Respect for Cultural Sensitivities: Show respect for the culture, customs, and traditions of the destinations you operate in. Promote responsible tourism practices that preserve and celebrate the local heritage, environment, and communities.
  • Professional Appearance and Conduct: Present yourself in a professional manner by dressing appropriately and maintaining a neat appearance. Demonstrate professional behavior by being punctual, attentive, and responsive to your guests’ needs.
  • Confidentiality: Respect the privacy and confidentiality of your guests. Do not disclose personal or sensitive information without proper consent. Safeguard any information obtained during the tour to maintain confidentiality and trust.
  • Honesty and Integrity: Be honest and transparent in your interactions with guests. Provide accurate information, including pricing, expectations, and potential risks. Do not engage in misleading practices or make false claims that may compromise guest trust.
  • Empathy and Inclusivity: Treat all guests with respect, regardless of their background, nationality, or beliefs. Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment, ensuring that everyone feels valued and included.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts or disagreements with professionalism and diplomacy. Listen to all parties involved, seek understanding, and work towards a fair resolution. Maintain composure and remain neutral when mediating disputes.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Be mindful of the impact your tours may have on the environment. Promote sustainable practices such as reducing waste, respecting wildlife and natural habitats, and encouraging responsible behaviors among your guests.
  • Accountability: Take responsibility for your actions and mistakes. Address any guest concerns or complaints promptly and professionally. Learn from feedback and strive to continuously improve as a tour guide.
  • Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Familiarize yourself with and adhere to local laws, regulations, and industry guidelines. Avoid engaging in any illegal or unethical activities that could tarnish your reputation and that of the tourism industry.

Maintaining professionalism and ethics ensures that you provide a trustworthy and reputable service. By practicing these principles, you not only enhance the guest experience but also contribute to the sustainable development of the tourism industry.

Enhancing Knowledge and Expertise

As a tour guide, continuously enhancing your knowledge and expertise is crucial for staying ahead in the ever-evolving world of adventure tourism. By deepening your understanding of destinations, honing your skills, and staying up-to-date with industry trends, you can provide a higher level of service and enrich the experiences of your guests. Here are some strategies to enhance your knowledge and expertise:

  • Continual Learning: Embrace a lifelong learning mindset by seeking opportunities to expand your knowledge. Read books, articles, and travel guides about the destinations you guide in. Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences to stay informed about the latest industry developments.
  • Destination Familiarization: Explore your guiding destinations extensively. Visit different sites, engage with locals, and immerse yourself in the culture. This firsthand experience will not only deepen your knowledge but also allow you to share enriching stories and insights with your guests.
  • Seek Feedback from Guests: Regularly seek feedback from your guests to understand their perspectives and areas for improvement. Use their insights to address any shortcomings and refine your guiding techniques. Actively engage in conversations with your guests to learn from their experiences and gather valuable feedback.
  • Network and Collaborate: Connect with other tour guides, travel professionals, and industry experts. Join professional associations or online communities to exchange ideas, insights, and best practices. Collaborate with fellow guides on joint projects or share knowledge through mentorship programs.
  • Develop Specialized Skills: Consider developing specialized skills or expertise in specific areas of interest. This could include gaining certifications in wildlife conservation, cultural heritage, or adventure activities. This specialized knowledge will enhance the uniqueness and quality of your tours.
  • Technology and Digital Skills: Embrace technology and develop digital skills relevant to your role. Utilize online resources, apps, and platforms to enhance your guiding capabilities. Stay updated with social media trends to effectively market and promote your tours to a wider audience.
  • Language Acquisition: Learn additional languages to expand your communication capabilities with a wider range of guests. Being able to speak the language of your guests builds rapport and allows for a more immersive experience.
  • Keep Up with Industry News: Stay informed about the latest industry news, travel trends, and sustainability initiatives. Subscribe to industry publications, follow reputable blogs, and engage with industry influencers and experts on social media platforms.
  • Engage in Cultural Exchange: Immerse yourself in cultural exchange opportunities to gain firsthand knowledge about different cultures, traditions, and customs. This can be achieved through volunteer work, homestays, or participating in local community activities.
  • Reflect and Evaluate: Set aside time for self-reflection and evaluation. Assess your strengths and areas for improvement as a guide. Regularly reassess and update your tour itineraries, activities, and delivery techniques to ensure they meet the changing needs and expectations of your guests.

Remember, the pursuit of knowledge and expertise is a lifelong journey. By embracing continuous learning, seeking feedback, and connecting with others in the industry, you can enhance your guiding skills and provide exceptional experiences for your guests.

Snow peak tour guide on the Matterhorn in Switzerland

Senior Photo Editor Dan Westergren snapped this photo of his tour guide as they neared the top of Mont Blanc in the Alps. "If one of you falls off," the guide said, "the other two have to jump in the opposite direction."

10 Great Tour Guides

From Traveler Magazine's 2011 Tours of a Lifetime

  • Roberto Strippoli A native of Puglia, Strippoli is a font of Italian history. In the off-season, he focuses on his culinary and sommelier studies. He is a multisport guide for Backroads . "A favorite spot is the little 14th-century Cetrella church going up from Anacapri to Monte Solaro. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture with balconies that face the Gulf of Naples, and guests just love it. The view, the nature, the colors—that’s the essence of the Amalfi coast . It’s a great example of integration of architecture and landscape. And it demonstrates how clever those Christian mystics and hermits really were."
  • Kennedy Omwenga A safari director for Micato Safaris, Omwenga grew up tending goats in the western highlands of Kenya , where he returns at times to serve as a Kisii tribal chief. "My hope is for guests to connect with the local people so that they can understand the diversity of our cultures and appreciate how different our lives are compared to most Americans’ lives. At the same time, I show that we’re more alike than they may think. We all hope for a better future for our children, for a cleaner planet, and for peace. Also, many travelers are surprised to learn that some Kisii people have Facebook pages, even though they still live in the traditional way."
  • Nic Polenakis Polenakis, an independent guide for Africa Adventure Company , was born in Zimbabwe and is specially trained to lead walking safaris. "I often sit for hours in anticipation of a kill and will analyze and investigate every fresh leopard track, rhino dung midden, steaming elephant dropping, buffalo wallow, lion roar, or any clue to the whereabouts of the animals. However, I just as passionately explain African culture and history, seek birds, insects, and reptiles; identify trees, grasses, and shrubs; and discuss everything else to do with conservation and ecotourism. To me it’s all about revealing the big picture and not necessarily only the Big Five."
  • Alfredo and Joaquin Meneses Alfredo, an independent guide in Ecuador for Southern Explorations and other outfitters, is an expert kayaker, completing more than 50 river descents. Joaquin often joins his father on family itineraries. "One of our guides dislocated a shoulder on the Jatunyacu River. It looked bad. Suddenly an Indian woman appeared as if from nowhere. She picked up a stone, smashed some plants, and rubbed them on him, then took his arm, and with the most gentle movement, put it back in place. This is the kind of thing we see in the jungle. Joaquin: I make friends with the kids on the trip and show them things my dad taught me."
  • Peter Hillary Hillary, an expedition leader and expert for National Geographic
Expeditions , first climbed Mount Everest in 1990, 37 years after his father, Edmund, made the first ascent with Tenzing Norgay. "I have a genuine love for the journeys upon which I am embarking and I get pleasure out of sharing it with other people. My favorites are unquestionably the Himalaya (they’re almost like a second home) and Antarctica. They are contrasting worlds, one brimming with life and people and the other an ice-age wilderness."
  • Lel Tone Tone grew up in Switzerland and began skiing in the Alps when she was just two years old. She is a heli-skiing guide in Alaska for EpicQuest . "Alaska is immense and beautiful. Often this combination is overwhelming and intimidating. Over the years, I’ve found it’s important to be all guide and part counselor. It is important to be aware and have compassion. There is nothing better than seeing the joy in a smile of someone who just skied a line they thought they couldn’t or pushed through fears or lack of confidence, something that brought them to the edge of their comfort zone."
  • Annie Dowling A cultural guide in India and China for Tauck , Dowling once worked with refugees in Asia. "In China, I get the guests up early so we are the first ones into Pit Number 1 at the Museum of the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. We stand in absolute quiet with the figures offering mute testimony to Emperor Qin’s megalomania. In India, I love taking guests to Varanasi. Picture the evening ceremonies: the drama at the Manikarnika cremation ground, the faithful bathing and worshipping the sun, the golden light on the stone mansions along the ghats. It’s colorful, magical, and soul-stirring."
  • Monica and Maria
Elena Malpezzi Price The siblings grew up in the bike touring business and bought Experience Plus! Bicycle Tours from their parents. Some guests aren’t comfortable talking to strangers, especially if they don’t speak the same language. I love to be the catalyst in connecting guests with locals in Italy . Ultimately, the more we all communicate, the more we understand about the world. Maria Elena: It’s important to be intuitive to people’s needs and know how to juggle the individual and the group experience, so guests can relax while being encouraged to join in the fun and camaraderie.

10 Tips for Being a Good Tour Guide

  • More: Preservation Tips and Tools
  • By: Emily Potter

In the spring of 2013, when a hint of warmer weather got us ready to think about being outside, we put together a toolkit with ideas to help you organize a tour in your community . But don’t let the current chilly winter season stop you from giving―or going on―tours.

Instead, use these 10 tips, compiled by Johns Hopkins, Executive Director of Baltimore Heritage , to help you be the best tour guide you can be. (Not a tour guide? These tips can also give you insight into being a good tour goer.)

1. Face the crowd, not what you’re talking about. Tour guides often get so wrapped up in their subject they forget to face the people they are addressing. One secret to avoid this is to designate somebody in the crowd to interrupt you if they can’t hear you.

2. Be personal. No matter how much we love buildings, it’s a fact that people connect with people. So it’s good to have a few personal anecdotes ready, even if they’re just about past tours you've done. You’ll build a more personal connection to your group and create a memorable tour.

3. Tell a story (historical or contemporary). Make sure you have a few fun and compelling stories to tell about the buildings and sites you’re looking at. People are more likely to feel engaged when they are listening to a story, rather than a list of dates and names.

Tell a story, share your passion, get your tour group engaged in the places and sites you're excited about.

4. Get moving right away. Tours often get bogged down before they ever begin with tour guides doing the “big wind-up”―introductions, setting the theme, providing context, etc. Plan to scrap 90% of it.

Hint: If you have a script, the first line should tell you: “Move thirty feet up the street before you say anything.”

5. Don’t worry about being perfect. People don’t expect you to be perfect. Set the stage for human imperfection by acknowledging that people who may know more than you should speak up and share their knowledge with the group. The more interactive the tour is, the better!

6. Get help to get organized. Try to get a volunteer to check people in so you can chat with tour goers. People give tours for many reasons, but a big one is to meet new people, and the time before the tour is a great chance to get to know your group.

Hint: If you don’t have a volunteer beforehand, ask somebody on the spot. (They’ll love it!)

7. End on time. (Or try very hard to.) Try like crazy to end on time. Nobody wants to feel like they are in tour jail. Tours on paper always seem too short and on the ground are always too long. Two hours is the absolute maximum. An hour to an hour and a half is better.

8. Limit your number of speakers. It’s hard to talk for just five minutes, so when you have multiple guides talking about different subject areas, it’s easy to lose track of time. Avoid it if you can, but, if you do have several different guides with you, designate one as the lead guide and the others as experts in a specific area.

9. Send a follow-up email. Follow up with an email―it can be as simple as a “thank you” note. If you can follow the tour with another contact, by email or otherwise, that’s another step towards creating a better link between the tour taker and your organization.

10. Avoid these traps:

  • “12 (or 20…) people on the tour is the max.” Rather, let the space and tour guide set the scene.
  • “You MUST plan everything out ahead of time.” In fact, a little spontaneity is good.
  • “Don’t do outdoor tours in the winter.” People will still come, even in the snow.
  • “Always have a backup plan in case it rains.” Don’t worry, people will come out in the rain, and it’s much easier than rescheduling.

All the World's a Stage for Katie Holmes

That’s been the case for Katie Holmes for more than 25 years, and now the actress is coming back to Broadway to breathe new life into an American classic.

‘‘I have no idea where we are,” says Katie Holmes. We’re on a stroll through Central Park on an overcast afternoon this summer, her favorite time of year, and have been walking with no destination in mind when Holmes notices an older gentleman headed our way, wearing a sheepish expression and holding a rather large turtle.

“It was wandering across the lawn all by itself, so I thought I’d bring it up by the water,” the man says.

“Is it a snapping turtle?” Holmes asks.

“No, it seems lost. I’m probably doing the wrong thing.”

“Let’s just hope it didn’t take him four weeks to get there from here,” Holmes says, patting the turtle’s shell as she turns away and says, sotto voce, “I’m kind of afraid of turtles.”

We’ve stumbled into one of the wilder sections of the park, a rocky swamp left in its natural state as a contrast to the manicured lawns and leafy boulevards of New York’s crown jewel of greenery. Holmes has been coming here for years, often to let her mind wander, but this is a different experience. “This is so gorgeous,” she says. “I didn’t even know about this.”

Holmes has suggested a surprisingly exposed venue for an interview, though few actors walk the tightrope between public and private more deftly than she. Being in the limelight for more than 25 years—first as the sweetheart star of the teenage TV drama Dawson’s Creek , then as a tabloid chew toy for her relationships, and lately as a reluctant street style icon—has made her determined to go about her life as if no one would ever notice Katie Holmes walking through Central Park, which on this day appears to be the case. Walking in nature invites a more contemplative conversation, and we fall into an easy discussion about her latest work: Holmes returns to Broadway this month in director Kenny Leon’s revival of Our Town . Besides the man with the turtle, the only person who approaches us is touting a horse-drawn carriage ride.

“We forget we can just come here and do this on a lovely afternoon,” Holmes says. “There’s so much beauty in the simplicity.”

These days Holmes might want to savor every moment, which is the message of Thornton Wilder’s beloved slice-of-Americana play, written in 1938, as she is experiencing big moments of her own. Now 45 years old, facing a future for the first time as an empty nester (her daughter Suri is heading off to college as you read this), Holmes has thrown herself into creative pursuits including dance classes (“I love a dance studio because every time you enter, you’re starting from the beginning, and that’s a good, meditative way to approach the day”), painting (“I like abstract and took a class right here”), and even a book club (“You learn so much about each other—it’s a chance for everybody to share what moves them”). She’s a great reader; her group, which meets about five times a year, recently discussed Abraham Verghese’s The Covenant of Water .

She can play love, envy. I want the presence that is Katie onstage.” —Kenny Leon

This is an important thing to know about Holmes, because she considers herself a quiet person who likes simplicity. She speaks with nostalgia about her upbringing in Toledo, Ohio, which is not exactly Grover’s Corners from Our Town but is closer than New York City, and reading is usually how she prepares for a role. “I read a lot to calm my mind down, and then I play,” she says. “We all live at this fast pace, and I know sometimes I need to calm down.”

Lately her professional choices have seemed more considered and personal than earlier in her career, when she starred in Dawson’s Creek , Batman Begins , and a pair of Jackie Kennedy bio-series. Now she can take to the stage or call the shots from behind the camera. Holmes has demonstrated the sort of staying power that is rare in her business, partly because she has pushed back when others have tried to define her, both in film and in fashion, which hasn’t always been easy.

town and country katie holmes

“Do I have 20 scripts at my door, all with the green light? No. Would that make life easier? Yes. Is that unrealistic? Yes,” Holmes says. “Everybody has to find their interesting story, try to put it together, and make poetry out of things. There’s a lot of thought that goes into the projects I work on, but at the end of the day you still want to create something that people will respond to. You’re always at the whim of someone.”

As it happens, earlier this year she was reading Tom Lake , a novel by Ann Patchett that includes a character who has played the role of Emily Webb in Our Town multiple times, when she ran into Leon, whom she had met about 15 years ago while workshopping a production that never got off the ground. Leon broached the subject of casting Holmes, who last appeared Off-Broadway a year ago in The Wanderers (playing, of all things, a famous actress), as Mrs. Webb—Emily’s mother—in his production, which includes Zoey Deutch as Emily, Jim Parsons in the role of the stage manager, and Ephraim Sykes as Emily’s love interest, George Gibbs. Growing up in Florida, Leon says, he used to hate the play because Grover’s Corners had no Black people (“It seems like the most racist place in the world”), but he has since staged contemporary renditions in Atlanta with his True Colors Theatre Company that showed that its themes are universal when the casting is more diverse. “I wanted one family to be Black and one family to be white, because I wanted the older generation to learn from the younger generation,” Leon says. “This is the best play of all time. It is the play to remind us how to spend our moments on the planet and that we have to help our friends and neighbors. It reminds us what we owe each other.”

Likewise, Leon sees in Holmes something he thinks others have missed. “People don’t realize her breadth and wealth of talent. This is basically an ensemble piece, so I really need actors who can understand subtext—what’s really going on beneath these words. She can play danger. She can play love, envy. I just want the presence that is Katie Holmes on stage.” Surely, Holmes can relate.

“This play is important after what we’ve all been going through,” says Holmes, who spent much of the pandemic holed up in upstate New York with her daughter, trying to make something meaningful out of the collective misery.

It would be easy, and foolish, to think she’s just this smiley girl. She’s a powerhouse.” —Alan Cumming

In 2022 she wrote, directed, and starred in the film Alone Together , the story of two strangers who find love after they book the same Airbnb while escaping New York in March 2020. The New York Times called it a “quiet achievement: a movie that isn’t running away from reality.” She co-wrote last year’s Rare Objects (her third feature directorial effort), adapted from the novel by Kathleen Tessaro about a young woman, the victim of a sexual assault, rebuilding her life while working in an antique shop; one of the shop’s owners is played by Alan Cumming, who has become a close friend. They’ve even taken a stab at writing a script together. “It would be easy, and foolish, to think she’s just this smiley girl, but she’s a powerhouse,” Cumming says. “You don’t get to do the things she’s done by being passive.”

Now Holmes is writing three scripts at once, a love story trilogy in the vein of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise series that follows a young couple from high school through their thirties. “I was drawn to create a love story, because I think that that never goes out of style,” she says. “We all want to escape into that.”

Not that she would remember, but I first met Holmes in 2006 in Paris, at a Giambattista Valli show, and then again in 2013, when she and stylist Jeanne Yang were showing their own fashion collection in New York. Even during those brief encounters, it was evident that the public had a fixation with Holmes for reasons other than her professional achievements. Holmes, who now works with the stylist Brie Welch, is held up for scrutiny not so much for her acting or directing as for what she wears while hailing a taxi or running errands. Her outfits have become a beat for many fashion magazines; upon the release of a design collaboration between Holmes and the French fashion label APC in June, the Washington Post headlined an article by Rachel Tashjian “ Why does everyone want to dress like Katie Holmes? ”

town and country katie holmes

Her style has been described as relatable, approachable, practical, and seemingly effortless, although the New York Times used the word “ generic .” She is “accessible and elevated,” says Judith Touitou, the artistic director of APC. “Katie’s style inspires people because it is composed of pieces that everyone has in their closet but assembled in an inventive, personal manner that you can then translate into your own world.” The most personal item in the collection, a quilt inspired by one Holmes’s mother made for her, was the first to sell out, and items that comprise her signature look—jeans and a white T-shirt—are best-sellers.

Tashjian says she suspects that what’s driving the interest in Holmes’s clothes is the gulf viewers see between the actress and celebrities who wear don’t-try-this-at-home fashion during their daily routines. “Our eyes are so trained to see overly styled images as natural, this looks fresh,” Tashjian says. “It’s clear that even though Katie Holmes works with a stylist, she doesn’t call every day asking how to tuck her shirt into her jeans.”

“I’m adamant about having a life and not letting this industry dictate decisions as simple as what I wear.”

Holmes dresses in a way that makes it look easy, as if she doesn’t care what people think, and she still looks undeniably great. For the record, during our afternoon together, she wore a light, ribbed terra-cotta-colored cotton V-neck sweater from the APC collaboration ($350) over a brown acetate slip dress by Tibi that can be found online for $425 , and strappy sandals. At one point she removed her sweater and let down her hair, which had been tucked under a baseball cap, and frankly she could have walked a red carpet in that slip dress. If that isn’t the definition of je ne sais quoi, I don’t know what is.

“This is where we are right now,” Holmes says. “Fashion is really big, and it didn’t used to be. As an actor, you weren’t necessarily photographed all the time on the street. It’s different now, and it’s flattering, but it doesn’t change how I live or dress. I’m adamant about having a life and not letting this industry dictate decisions as simple as what I wear or as complicated as what I do. You don’t want to be afraid of anything, right?”

town and country katie holmes

As we exit the woods near Wollman Rink, I confess that I am wearing ankle socks, which are now the mark of “old people,” according to a viral TikTok post. “I had no idea,” she says. “I thought that was the thing to have.”

“I thought so too, but apparently now it’s, like, mid-calf.”

“I think it’s pants-dependent. You made the right choice.”

I thank her for the compliment, but later I wonder, was that a dig? But of course not. There is no hint of cynicism in Holmes. She says she loves the shared experience of living in New York, and the rituals of the theater, especially the way a cast creates its own community. Both offer a sense of intimacy with strangers that can be elusive for a celebrity who has sought to shield her family from prying eyes. That’s something Holmes is discovering becomes harder as her daughter makes her own way in the world. A few days before we met, Suri’s supposed college choice was inadvertently revealed to the world when one of her high school classmates posted a TikTok video on the school’s “commitment day,” showing her wearing a college’s sweatshirt. According to the gossip that followed, Suri, who has contributed vocals to songs in two of Holmes’s films, is said to be interested in pursuing a career in fashion or acting, which seems like following in her mother’s footsteps.

This is all that Holmes will say on the subject: “I’m proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy. I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”

Luckily, it’s something Holmes won’t have to weather alone. Like every other resident of Grover’s Corners, she’s got a community to support her. “The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me,” she says with a laugh. “I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.’ ”

How to hire and train amazing tour guides

Sustainable tourism tour operators

By Kevin Tjoe — 4 Feb 2021

hiring   tour guides

Kelsey Tonner from the Be a Better Guide Project shares his tips and insights on developing great tour guides and leaders.

I am an amazing tour guide. And though you may not believe me, I am actually quite modest about it.

I’ve worked for over a dozen different tour companies, I’ve been in the industry for over 10 years and I founded the Be a Better Guide Project – an online hub for free tour guide training. With all of this experience, it would be a bit shocking if I was not at least a pretty good guide.

But here is the challenge that you face as a tour company: You know that your business relies on hiring and training amazing tour leaders – but how do you find, recruit and train people like me? Or perhaps the even bigger challenge: How can you transform your existing guide staff into outstanding tour leaders?

It can be done. I was not always an amazing guide – far from it. But here – in my humble opinion – are five important things you need to do.

1. Create a Killer Job Description on your Website

As we previously covered in the tour operator’s guide to hiring the best guides and staff, your Jobs or Careers area is a section of your site that is aimed at potential tour leaders, and it should stay online permanently. You will not be hiring permanently, but potential prospects will be visiting your site year-round and wanting to know what it is like to work for your company.

Spend some time creating a description and profile that excites and inspires potential employees! Is there a way you can show how fun it is to work for you? Perhaps a video on your company culture, or a fun staff event you throw every year?

Now get specific and answer these questions for potential candidates:

  • What are the responsibilities of the job?
  • How are staff paid?
  • What are the hours of a typical work week?
  • What interests/passions should a person have if they are considering applying?
  • How does the application process work and what do they need to do to apply?

Build and develop an FAQ section for potential candidates and add the most common questions you are asked (e.g. Do I need a second language to apply? How does scheduling work? How much work can I expect and will the job be seasonal? What are the top skills of a tour guide within this business? etc.)

Remember, this section of your website will stay online and be your main recruiting tool. Be sure to indicate your hiring cycle and update the page when you are accepting applications. Want to be a real pro? Insert a field where interested people can leave their contact info, then inform them by e-mail when your next round of hiring begins!

When it comes to identifying the right people and essential attributes for the job, check out these 5 qualities to look for when hiring the best tour guides. And be sure to look out for relevant, positive references that will point you to your future tour superstars – after all, if they’ve left a great impression on previous employers, chances are they’ll leave a great impression on your guests!

2. Inspire, Train and Coach

Now that you have found some people with potential, take the time to properly set them up for success. Here’s great news if you’re wondering how to train your tour guides without days or weeks of dedicated formal training courses; mentoring and modelling are two of the most powerful ways you can inspire your tour leaders. Here’s how:

  • Observing the pros at work Job shadowing is a great way to transfer expertise and skills in an intuitive way. Do you personally lead the best tours in your company and have in-depth knowledge of the tour area? Bring new recruits on a few tours delivered just the way you expect. Afterwards sit down and really get into the details of what you did, and why you did it. If things are overlooked, bring them up and discuss them. e.g. ‘Did anyone notice how I personally went over and welcomed everyone to the tour before we got started? Why do you think that’s important?’
  • Supervising their first tours As new recruits become confident enough to lead their own tours, it’s time to put this new knowledge into practice. Use your more experienced leaders as mentors and have them observe newer guides as they’re leading tours to provide coaching and specific feedback. Tour guides at all experience levels can benefit from accompanied tours, to ensure your whole team is providing a consistently great experience in line with your business values and brand.

Want my favorite, one-page template for mentoring new tour guides? Grab it here and I’ll drop it right in your inbox! It is the perfect way to do periodic evaluations of your guides. It helps summarize their accomplishments and improvements, while highlighting where they can develop their skills. Give it a try! It’s quick, simple and effective.

3. Take Advantage of Online Training Resources

The best tour guides are the ones that are always improving. Ongoing training and growth should be a big part of your curriculum. Use sites like beabetterguide.com to share free training videos with members of your team. You can sign up here to get free training videos delivered to your inbox every week. Furthermore, you can also take advantage of job simulations to further train and assess your team on a periodical basis.

The web is full of amazing websites and blogs that cover all kinds of important subjects. If you find an inspiring article, share it with your team of leaders! Articles on customer service, dealing with angry guests, or how to go ‘above and beyond’ can help inspire new growth and development.

Want to know one of the more amazing blogs out there for tour companies and operators? You’re already on it! The Rezdy Blog has a HUGE back catalogue with all kinds of great tips and advice!

4. Always, Always, Always get Feedback from your Guests

As you’ll know, TripAdvisor is not the ideal place to get ‘constructive feedback’ on your guides. To prevent this from happening, ask for direct feedback right after the tour is finished: ideally before guests have time to rate you on TripAdvisor. This can be done by e-mail, a quick paper survey, an app on an iPad or simply by having one on one conversations with guests after the tour.

I highly recommend using an e-mail survey, either created using customer management software OR linking to a questionnaire created on Google Forms / SurveyMonkey. Ask guests to give their guide a numerical score of their overall performance, and then a separate score for their overall tour. This will allow you to help your guides improve, while still getting important feedback on your tour. Be sure to leave a space for comments under both guide and tour ranking.

To encourage more feedback, use these questions widely accepted in the service industry to solicit specific feedback:

  • How would you rate your overall tour experience?
  • How would you rate the overall performance of your leader?
  • Would you recommend XYZ Company to a friend?
  • How likely are you to take another tour with XYZ Company?
  • What was your favorite part of the tour?
  • What was your least favorite part of the tour?
  • How could we have done better?
  • Any additional comments?

Compile this data – but most importantly – share it with individual guides to help create a sense of ownership. Meet regularly to discuss low scores or areas for potential growth.

5. Get Feedback from your Guides

Now that you have found good people, coached them into amazing guides and have established an ongoing feedback loop – you need to keep these amazing leaders working for you! What is the best way to do that? Check in with them regularly and solicit specific feedback on you as their employer.

Much in the way that your tours should always be improving – you need to be improving as an employer as well. What are the biggest concerns of your guides? What do they complain about the most? What do they think is unfair? Where are they being frustrated or under-supported? Use surveys to draw out specific feedback and allow them to be submitted anonymously if your employees would prefer.

Summarize the constructive feedback and be appreciative. Improve and adapt your company wherever you can, and if you cannot, try and clearly explain why that is the case. It is important to empathize with your employees during this process, and really try and find a solution, or at least a compromise that will help solve their frustrations.

Supporting professional development

Everyone has goals for the future, and it’s worth speaking with your amazing tour leaders regularly to see whether they have professional objectives in mind. Perhaps they’d love to work up to a full-time position within your business, or perhaps they have ideas to shape new tours based on their special expertise. Supporting each individual’s professional development can keep that person engaged and passionate within your business, minimize your staff turnover and lead to rewarding results – it’s really a win-win.

Amazing tours have amazing guides.

Who is Taylor Swift’s support? All the acts performing at the UK Eras Tour

Supporting Swift can turbocharge a rising star’s career. Those chosen for the UK leg of the Eras tour might become tomorrow’s megastars

Taylor Swift is currently touring the UK and Ireland

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour is no ordinary concert run – it’s earned more than a billion dollars , boosted the local economies of dozens of cities across the US, Latin America, Asia, Australia and continental Europe, and cemented her status as this generation’s biggest popstar.

The 34-year-old pop behemoth has delighted fans across the UK and Europe over the past few months, but now, the end is in sight. Swift will perform the final five nights of the tour’s European leg at Wembley Stadium from 15-20 August.

But Swift’s near-two decades of chart-toppers aren’t the only musical draws to the Eras tour. The starry support acts lure in their own fans – whether they’re newcomers in need of a publicity boost (Swift’s US openers, Gracie Abrams and Sabrina Carpenter, have both become stars in their own right since the tour began last year) or established award-winners (like Paramore or HAIM) – and promise to ramp up the energy long before Swift arrives on stage.

Here are all the support acts for the remaining London dates

Old friends: Hayley Williams of Paramore

Paramore (all European and UK dates)

The Tennessee rockers may seem, at first glance, an odd choice for the primary opening act of the highest-grossing pop tour in history. But the band, who burst into the mainstream in the early Noughties with a run of deliciously rebellious, angst-ridden albums (2005’s All We Know is Falling, 2007’s Riot!), have a long history with Swift personally. Flame-haired frontwoman Hayley Williams, 35, is widely regarded as one of the most influential women in modern rock: Paramore have numerous Grammys, NME and MTV Awards, soundtracked the mega-successful Twilight films, and headlined Reading and Leeds festivals.

She’s also been friends with Swift since they were teenagers and coming up together in the Nashville music scene. Paramore’s influence is keenly felt in much of Swift’s work, from the pop-punk tinged Haunted or Better Than Revenge, on 2010’s Speak Now to upbeat poptimism on 2019’s Lover. After Paramore opened the Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona in March 2023, Williams featured on Castles Crumbling, a Vault track from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) released last year – the pair have yet to perform it as a secret song. For the European leg, Swift even reportedly petitioned Williams to put Misery Business – Paramore’s pop-punk anthem that they stopped playing because of the “problematic” lyrics – back on the setlist. Paramore’s entertaining blend of rock instruments and pop beats is the perfect energiser for a tour that requires pure stamina.

Paramore’s current setlist for the Eras tour: Hard Times, Burning Down the House (Talking Heads cover), Still Into You, That’s What You Get, Running Out of Time, The Only Exception, Misery Business, Ain’t It Fun, This Is Why

Sofia Isella, Wembley Stadium (15 August)

Aged just 19, the Californian singer will kick off the second leg of Swift’s record-breaking run at Wembley Stadium in London. Possessing powerful vocals and a background as a classically trained violinist, Isella – who also describes herself as a “s--t for words” is sure to get the crowd going.

Holly Humberstone, Wembley Stadium (16 August)

British singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone

The British singer-songwriter is the latest up-and-coming artist to be announced as one of Swift’s supports. Originally from Grantham, Humberstone is a former recipient of the Brit Rising Star Award and released her debut album, Paint My Bedroom Black , last year. Describing her excitement, she wrote online:“The hardest secret I’ve ever had to keep. As if I get to support Taylor Swift at The Eras Tour!!!! pinch me!! Taylor thank you thank you thank you I am eternally grateful and what an honour. I have no words and I can’t fuckin wait for the 16th! See you at Wembley!”

Song to listen out for: The Walls Are Way Too Thin

Suki Waterhouse, Wembley Stadium (17 August)

Actress and singer Suki Waterhouse

The British actress, model and singer also happens to be one of Swift’s close friends, and the Eras tour support slot marks her return to playing live after she recently gave birth to her first child with boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Similar to the ethereal, Seventies-tinged vibe she brought to Amazon Prime Video’s hit series Daisy Jones & the Six last year, Waterhouse is known for being a thoughtful performer uninterested in gimmicks.

Song to listen out for: Good Looking

Maisie Peters, Wembley Stadium (19 August)

One of Britain’s foremost rising talents, the West Sussex-born singer has previously supported Ed Sheeran and became the youngest solo British female artist to top the album charts in almost a decade with 2023’s acclaimed The Good Witch. She brought a dose of welcome teen angst to last year’s Glastonbury, and her set at the Eras tour promises to be filled with similar odes to growing up, falling in love and falling straight back out of it.

Song to listen out for: Lost the Breakup

tmg.video.placeholder.alt DwoovvtYf08

Raye, Wembley Stadium (20 August)

Brit Award-winner Raye is sure to hold her own against both Paramore and Swift

A record-breaking six awards at this year’s Brits, a writing credit on Beyonce’s smash country album Cowboy Carter and swirling rumours that she could be doing the next Bond theme – it’s been quite the year for Croydon-raised singer-songwriter Raye. With her uber powerful, silky-smooth vocals and hard-hitting lyrics, Raye is sure to hold her own against both Paramore and Swift.

Song to listen out for: Worth It.

Potential secret guests

Swift has brought a number of famous guests on stage to sing with her throughout the Eras tour – typically artists with feature credits on her songs. The National’s Aaron Dessner, who produced much of her lockdown albums Folklore and Evermore, appeared in Santa Clara, California, to perform melodic break-up ballad Right Where You Left Me. The National are in Europe throughout the summer for their own gigs and festival performances – including a Sunday night headline slot on the Other Stage at Glastonbury – so he could make a surprise appearance again.

Then there’s sister-indie trio HAIM, who are personal close friends with Swift and featured on No Body, No Crime. Other potential secret guests range from Lana Del Rey (who sang on Snow on the Beach, and is in the UK in August for Reading and Leeds festivals, so it could work), Ed Sheeran (Everything Has Changed), Jack Antonoff (Getaway Car and more) and Zayn Malik (I Don’t Wanna Live Forever).

A Very Good Gap Sale: Linen, Denim Skirts, and Tank Tops Galore

Portrait of Ambar Pardilla

In this article

It’s been a big Gap summer here at the Strategist, from trying out the Gap x Dôen collab and hunting down the perfect white tee to perusing the new-arrivals page now that Zac Posen is the company’s creative director. All of that is to say: Gap is good again! So I was especially enthused to see that Gap is running an excellent sitewide sale this week with 40 percent off almost everything. Some sale-on-sale deals are available as well (including on our writer Liza Corsillo’s favorite minidress, which was originally going for $70 and is now $30) with the additional discount showing up at checkout. I combed through the entire site and highlighted what’s worth getting, including a tank top seen in Laura Reilly’s Magasin newsletter and the Americana-inspired button-down from a Dapper Dan collab. Surprisingly, all of Gap x Dôen is included in the sale. Unsurprisingly, sizes are going, going, gone . So act fast.

Gap Linen-Blend Minidress

A “deceivingly simple” dress that’s so nice Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo bought it twice . “Thanks to the linen blend, it feels like you’re not wearing much at all,” she says.

Gap Shift Mini Dress

You could wear this shift dress to the office and then to happy-hour drinks.

Gap Drop-Waist Mixed Media Midi Dress

Drop-waist silhouettes are making a comeback — though I like that this dress doesn’t sit too low on the hip.

Gap × DÔEN Eyelet Midi Dress

The cheapest Dôen dress you’re probably ever going to get.

Gap GapFit Power Exercise Dress

If you’re over your Outdoor Voices Exercise Dress (or in need a replacement for a worn-out one).

Gap Modern Rib Halter Tank Top

Our own Lauren Ro first read about these tank tops in Laura Reilly’s Magasin newsletter, bought some, and quickly learned that “they’re incredibly soft, flattering, great for layering — and go with everything.”

Gap Linen-Blend Button-Back Cropped Tank Top

Another find from Ro : A linen-blend, buttons-in-the-back tank top she’s been wearing all summer long.

Gap 100% Linen Big Shirt

It might be mistaken for The Row in that “slipper red” shade.

Gap Modern Boatneck T-Shirt

I’ve heard good things about this boatneck tee, which shows a sliver of collarbone.

Gap Denim Mini Skirt

You can tuck a T-shirt into this denim skirt now and a turtleneck later.

Gap Mini Skirt

Pair it with tights once the first leaf of fall falls.

Gap 4” Low Rise Stride Denim Shorts

An “unfussy cutoff that has a cool, downtown, not-trying-too-hard” look, according to artist Melly Wirtes .

Gap Crinkle Gauze Pull-On Shorts

Pair a bikini with these wrinkle-crinkle shorts for the last few summer weekends.

Gap High Rise Barrel Jeans

The barrel-leg jean is the jean du jour — here’s a take on the trend for under $50.

Gap High Rise '90s Loose Jeans

In her hunt for a pair of dark-wash jeans , writer Mya Gelber found that “the wash of these jeans was exactly what I was looking for, and they were long enough to cuff.”

Gap Icon Denim Jacket

This jean jacket has earned a best-in-class blue ribbon — and it’s less than half the price of the Levi’s and Madewell styles on our list.

Gap Organic-Cotton Thong

Former deals writer Leah Muncy called these thongs “peak  underwear ” for their high leg and dipped waistline. “I don’t think a better pair of underwear exists,” she says. Buy them in bulk.

Gap Sheer Mesh Bralette

I regretted not buying this sheer, sexy little number during the Summer Sale . So I’m adding it my cart as we speak.

Gap Classic V T-shirt

One of the best black T-shirts out there for less than the price of a whole pizza. And musician Hayden Frank , a black-T-shirt collector, says it “works just as well at the gym as at the restaurant.”

Gap Pique Polo Shirt

A polo that wouldn’t look out of place for a round on a golf course (and easily works for the office, too).

GAP × DAP Embroidered Oxford Shirt

Dapper Dan ’s newest pieces for Gap include this Oxford shirt that has a nod to traditional western wear with embroidered bandannas and fedoras.

Gap Canvas Denim Carpenter Jacket

You can wear a sweater underneath the jacket, no problem.

Gap Linen-Cotton Cargo Pants

An airy pair of pants for jaunting around.

Gap '90s Loose Khakis

These are nothing like your dad’s khakis, thanks to their slouchier, cooler fit.

Gap Baggy Jeans

If you want a jean that’s not a straight-leg or a bootcut, go for a baggier (read: roomier) cut.

Gap × American Girl Kids Raglan T-Shirt

For the kid who’s a proud Samantha Parkington –doll owner.

Gap × DÔEN Baby Eyelet Denim Dress

A delightful denim dress that’ll be the talk of the playground.

Gap × DÔEN Baby Linen-Blend Cardigan

I wish this crocheted cardigan came in my size.

Gap Patchwork Denim Shirt

Even sweeter: There’s a teddy bear sewn onto the pocket.

Gap Graphic T-Shirt

Attention parents: These graphic T-shirts are each only $10 ahead of back-to-school season. Here’s one for the budding Deadhead and there’s another for a future paleontologist .

Gap Waxed Utility Jacket

Baby’s first Barbour (dupe).
