Great Dog-Friendly Attractions in Kent

places to visit in kent with a dog

With over 4,000 miles of wonderful walks it will come as no surprise that Kent – otherwise known as the ‘Garden of England’ – is a fantastic holiday destination for you and your four legged friends. Enjoy large sandy beaches, wide open skies and dramatic coastal paths. Travel further inland and you will find plenty of historic towns and quaint villages dotted in between the pretty Kent countryside. Stroll through ancient woodlands, enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Kent Downs or explore marshes teeming with wildlife. The choice of walks and landscapes are endless.

However, it’s not all about wonderful walks and beautiful beaches. If you are looking for a bit of history, culture, or just a nice relaxing day out with the family, there is vast selection of activities for you and your dog to enjoy. Here are our top seven dog friendly attractions in Kent.

The Historic Dockyard

It is not surprising that the Historic Dockyard  in Chatham has won a large number of tourist awards. Hugely popular with all ages, you can explore 400 years of maritime heritage on this 80 acre working dockyard. It is an exciting journey of discovery where you can climb on board historic warships, visit one of the 10 museum galleries or take a costume guided tour. Allow yourself a full day at the dockyard as there are so many fascinating things to see and do from learning about rope making to walking in the footsteps of famous actors. Try to spot the buildings used in the film sets of Les Miserables, Call the Midwife and Sherlock Holmes, to name just a few.

Dogs are welcome to join you at the Historic Dockyard but must be kept on a lead. They are not allowed in any of the galleries so you may need to take it in turns when viewing these.

Hever Castle

Hever Castle and Gardens is great day out for romantics and lovers of fine houses and gardens. As the former home of Anne Boleyn, one of England’s most famous queens, this beautiful double moated castle welcomes dogs on lead within its 125 acres of grounds including the magical Rose, Tudor and Italian Gardens. Enjoy a lakeside walk or hire a rowing boat and take in the beautiful setting of the castle. For those who want to explore the splendours of the castle itself, there is a place where dogs can be left in the castle courtyard. The cafe and restaurant both also have posts where you can tie your dog should you want to enjoy refreshments inside. Or on a sunny day there are facilities to eat outside with your dog.

Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest

Located in Goudhurst,  Bedgebury Pinetum  is home to the world’s most impressive collection of conifers and offers plenty of activities for a full day of fun for all ages. It is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of walking and cycling routes and there is even a tree top adventure for the younger ones at Go Ape. Dogs can enjoy some off-lead exercise on the forest walks but they must be kept on lead in the Pinetum and near the children’s play area.

As one of the country’s oldest cities, Canterbury should definitely be on your bucket list. Perhaps the best way to take in all the sites is to take part in a guided walking tour . Whilst you explore the medieval lanes and charming cobbled streets you will learn about the city’s colourful – and sometimes spooky – past. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the tour.

If you want to explore the cities magical sites without the hustle and bustle of city life book a trip on the river. At the Canterbury Punting Company you can either hire out your own punt or book onto a guided tour. Whether you are after something romantic, scary, or just a relaxing trip on the river, punting is a fun and different way to enjoy city life. And dogs go free!

Visit a garden

Garden lovers will be pleased to know there are a number of gorgeous gardens to visit in Kent. You and your dog can enjoy exploring the ten acres of woodland walks and landscaped gardens at Doddington Palace , near Sittingborne, or be wowed by the charming Edwardian gardens at Mount Ephraim. Take a picnic or treat yourself to an afternoon tea at the West Wing kitchen, where dogs are allowed on leads.

Kent and East Sussex Railway

Everyone likes to relax on holiday, even your dog! So why not sit back and appreciate this beautiful countryside on one of the finest rural light railways in the country on the Kent and East Sussex Railway . This nostalgic trip starts from the Cinque Port town of Tenterden and allows you to travel back in time as it winds its way through the unspoilt picturesque Rother Valley, with the sight of spectacular  Bodiam Castle  greeting you at the other end. Dogs are welcome into the grounds of Bodiam Castle and there are places to tether your dog outside the ticket office should you want to explore the castle itself. There are also several suggested railway walks which makes it easy to combine a walk with a train ride. Either enjoy one of the circular walks or walk in between stations and hop on the train to return back to where you started.

Biddenden Vineyard

If you have worked up a thirst after all this exploring head to Beddenden Vineyard to sample some of Kent’s award winning wines, ciders and juices. Either pre book a tour or if you are just passing there is a self-guided route that you and your dog are welcome to walk around at your leisure. Hi All, Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway welcomes all your friendly dogs. What’s the best news? We don’t charge a penny for them to ride around the railway all day! We do ask that they bring along a responsible owner. Dog watering bowls are available at most stations. Looking for a bite to eat? The conservatory of the Heywood Buffet at New Romney Station will happily let dogs and owners sit and enjoy a hearty meal. For more info visit: http://www.rhdr.org.uk

Sounds like the perfect dog-friendly attractions and how nice to not charge our four legged friends!

The Canine guide to Kent

The Garden of England, as Kent is often known, is not just for scenery-loving humans. It also makes a great escape for those with four legs and a wet nose, who will love its impressive stretch of coastline and myriad of country walking trails. While scampering through silky dunes, running across the sands and splashing about in the surf is any canine's holiday dream, we've heard on the dogvine that they are also partial to a pretty village or seaside town with a dog-friendly pub or two for post-walkie snacks and a bowl of water. Kent has so many chocolate-box villages to discover, ancient market towns to explore and seaside resorts to take the pups to as well as a whole host of dog-friendly attractions. What's more, it's also home to a spectacular cathedral city for those hounds who would prefer a more cosmopolitan getaway. Yes, Afghans - we're talking about you!

To this end, we have compiled a list of our favourite experiences across dog-friendly Kent including walks, pet-friendly days out and places to stop and have a bite to eat, all ready to welcome you and your canine chums with open paws - have a read below to pick the perfect one for your whole tribe.

The best W-A-L-K-I-E-S in Kent

Kent has so much to offer those with collar and lead at the ready. A beautiful stretch of coastline snaking its way down from the Thames Estuary in the north, it passes the upmarket fishing towns of Whitstable and Seasalter and the tourist hot spots of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, taking in the wide expanse of desert at Dungeness and coming to a halt just before the surfer's paradise at Camber Sands in East Sussex. It's not just beach, however, Kent is also home to the hilly Wealdway footpath and the great flats of Romney Marsh, as well as a number of sedate riverside strolls and fabulous park walks - there really is something for everybody.

Here are three of the best dog walks in Kent:

Dungeness,  Romney Marsh

Dungeness Kent

If you've got a dog who is expecting blankets of sand to bounce through, then you may need to send them a few miles east to Camber Sands - this stunning beach is strictly for those who don't mind the feel of shingle under their paws! Famous for being the UK's only desert, it is also a National Nature Reserve with a myriad of interesting plant species and wildlife. We warn you - it is bleak but there is something truly ethereal about the almost deserted single road that leads down to the mighty power stations situated on the sea edge.

Reculver  Country Park,  Herne Bay

Reculver Country Park Kent

Situated on the North Kent coast between Herne Bay and Margate, Reculver offers proper coastal walking with a view. With 26 hectares to discover, dogs on leads can follow the Saxon Shore Trail along the top of the cliffs, from where they'll be able to gaze out to sea and across to the ancient ruins of Reculver Towers, perched on the edge of the cliffs. There are open spaces to let exuberant dogs off the lead but bear in mind the clifftops at all times - best to keep inquisitive canines attached until you get well inland.

Cranbrook Walk,  Kent Weald

Kent countryside

Head to the Weald to treat your pup to some of Kent's prettiest countryside. There's only so much sea air a dog can take, and this gentle circular walk in the Kentish Weald countryside is sure to delight dogs who like a slower pace of life. That said, it is a 3-mile walk so dogs need to be fit, although there's nothing stopping our older companions doing just a short part of the route. The walk takes you through historic rural villages including pretty Sissinghurst with its glorious National Trust Castle Garden, the former home of authors Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson.

Ulti-mutt dog-friendly beaches in Kent

With over 200 miles of coastline, Kent is home to more than 50 beaches, attracting thousands of dogs and their lucky humans every year to enjoy nosing through rock pools, demolishing abandoned sandcastles ( abandoned  sandcastles, we said, Mutley) and frolicking through the waves. While there are some restrictions in summer, as there are on many family-friendly sandy beaches across the UK, all bets are off during the winter, when leads can be tossed aside with abandon and humans left to catch up as their salty sea dogs get busy making new holiday chums.

Take a peek at our three best dog-friendly beaches:

Shakespeare Beach, near Dover

Dog carrying stick on beach

You'll find a lot of shingle beaches rather than sandy along the Kent coast - we say just go with it and enjoy them anyway! Shakespeare Beach near Dover is one such beach but as the tide goes out, huge swathes of sand are uncovered so that pups can have a proper run and enjoy making pawprints in the wet sand. This beach is also famously known as the starting point for swims across the English Channel so keep a lookout for intrepid swimmers - just make sure that Rover doesn't think it's you in the water or you may be swimming after him and setting your own world record. Just a point to be aware of re access: there are quite a few steps down to the beach (100 plus to be precise) so it's not one for the older dog or those with joint problems.

Dumpton Gap, Broadstairs

Dumpton Gap

Despite its rather unattractive name, if you're looking for a secluded bay to take the dogs for a run, this one is a top choice. Welcoming sandy mutts all year round and with dog-friendly cafés nearby, it's a great place to set yourself up with a warming hot chocolate before walking all the way along the beach to Ramsgate at low tide (check tide timetables so that you are not cut off at high tide). It's also backed by a wide promenade which leads to Broadstairs, so if your dog prefers to do a little people-watching or cannot cope with the steep path from the clifftop, take him for a lovely seaside stroll along the prom instead.

Whitstable West, Whitstable

Whitstable Beach

This superb stretch of shingle, divided by wooden groynes jutting out into the ocean, runs south of Whitstable Harbour to neighbouring Seasalter. The mile-long walk will take you to one of this part of Kent's coolest areas - home to the Michelin-starred Sportsman pub - and back again. The quintessentially English seaside resort that is Whitstable is a superb choice for those who like their beach holidays quirky and charming rather than packed with amusements and fairground rides. Best of all, it's extremely dog friendly.

Hit the button below for even more of our favourite, paw-sonally approved dog-friendly beaches in Kent.

Sniff out the best attractions across Kent

A large number of Kent's attractions are more than happy to welcome those with four legs as well as two. From walking around romantic moated castles and vineyards to boat trips and vintage steam trains that show off the best of Kent's breathtaking scenery, you'll always find a place where your pooch is as welcome as you are.

Here are three of the best dog-friendly places to visit when you've got a pup at foot:

Biddenden Vineyard, Biddenden

Vineyard Kent

While we're not suggesting that our canine friends would enjoy an afternoon sampling the excellent wines at Biddenden Vineyard, they will like the fact that they can accompany their humans on this exciting excursion. If they are lucky, it may even be followed by a walk in the beautiful surrounding countryside! Start by exploring the vines on a self-guided tour, then head to the shop for a tasting and finish off with a purchase or two in the shop. When you've put the cases of wine safely in the boot, head off to explore the pretty village with your patient pup or enjoy a pint and bowl of water in the pet-friendly Three Chimney's Pub just out of the village.

Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway,  New Romney

vintage steam train

Train-loving hounds should jump aboard this cute-as-can-be 15in narrow-gauge light steam miniature railway, where they'll receive a free doggy day pass to see the charming Kent countryside at their leisure. The train will take you along the southern Kent coastline from Hythe, slowly choo-chooing across the plains of Romney Marsh, to finish at Dungeness where you can stop off for a walk on the beach and some fish and chips at the pup-friendly Brittania pub.

Dover Castle, Dover

Dover Castle Kent

Dogs on leads are welcome at the famous White Cliffs of Dover, and in the grounds of Dover Castle too. Venture behind the battlements and take a leisurely stroll under the watchful gaze of this most magnificent of English fortresses. Buy an ice cream from the café in nice weather and sit awhile up on the cliffs with your canine chum, watching the ferries gliding to and fro across the English Channel. If you want to extend your day out, pop along to Shakespeare Beach afterwards and see if you can spot any swimmers practising for a cross-channel swim.

Hit the button below for even more of our favourite, paw-sonally approved dog-friendly days out in Kent.

Let Fido take the lead to the best places to eat across Kent

You won't have to go far to find a quintessentially English country pub with roses around the door, a traditional seaside café serving the best pre-walk breakfast or a dog-friendly restaurant which allows well-behaved hounds in for dinner. You and your pups won't have rumbling tummies for long when you come to Kent - that we can promise you!

Check out three of the best dog-friendly pubs and restaurants to grab a bite to eat:

The Sportsman,  Seasalter

Sportsman Seasalter

Whitstable and Seasalter are well-known for their pet-friendly establishments - dotted across the town and on the beach, you'll always find a place to dine with your four-legged chum after a long beach walk. The Michelin-starred Sportsman in Seasalter is one such establishment - an iconic upmarket seaside gastropub, it's as down to earth as they come, welcoming everybody from local farmers to food writers who come down from London to see what all the fuss is about. The chefs use the best fresh produce including locally-caught seafood from along the North Kent coastline and they even have their own homemade salt. If that's not commitment, we don't know what is!

The Fitzwalter Arms, Goodnestone

Fitzwalter Arms Kent

Bookish dogs will love an evening out at this exquisite 16th-century pub nestled in the pretty village of Goodnestone, on the Goodnestone Estate. One of Jane Austin's favourite places to visit, it's a great place to rest weary paws, whether sitting beside the roaring fire in the colder months or stretching out in the pretty gardens on warmer summer nights. Have a stroll around the pretty village if you've time before.

The Tiger Inn,  Stowting

Dog in pub garden

Canines taking their humans for a hike across the North or Wye Downs, a day out in Canterbury or a long run along the beach at Folkestone, should make it their mission to get to this atmospheric 17th-century pub for a post-walk dinner. With crackling log fires, dried hops hanging down from the ceiling and antique furniture, this traditional pub will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Locally-sourced dishes from surrounding farms are lovingly prepared by the pub's chef and dogs are welcome to join their humans in the bar to try them out.

For many dog owners, a day out to the beach in the summer can be made restricted by seasonal dog bans at several of Kent's top beaches.

Beaches such as Botany Bay, Minnis Bay, Dymchurch and St Margaret's Bay all currently ban dogs from May through to September.

These bans are in place for either the whole beach or between certain points, which can get very confusing for dog walkers.

We’ve compiled a list of the best beaches to visit with the whole family, including the dog, this summer.

West Beach, Whitstable

places to visit in kent with a dog

Whitstable is known for being one of the most dog-friendly towns in Kent.

Your dog will love running for miles down the shingle as well as socialising with plenty of other dogs too.

The beautiful beach is accompanied by a busy town, full of dog-friendly amenities for you to enjoy.

Dumpton Gap Beach, Broadstairs

Dumpton Gap Beach

Dumpton Gap offers a quiet sandy bay, with plenty of rock pools for you and your dog to explore.

It offers one of the best walking routes to Ramsgate at low tide. There’s a promenade and a kiosk to enjoy too.

One thing to consider is that at very high tide the beach is totally covered by the sea, so be sure to check the tide times before you set off.

Samphire Hoe, Dover

places to visit in kent with a dog

With the striking background of the famous White Cliffs of Dover, this secluded beach is a place rich in biodiversity.

The largely pebble and shingle beach is accompanied by plenty of amenities such as a cafe, toilets and lots of parking.

Although Samphire Hoe is dog-friendly, be sure to adhere to their on-lead policy at all times.

Sandwich Bay, Between Ramsgate and Deal

Sandwich Bay

This coastal area is a long inlet of the sea, which runs between Ramsgate and Deal.

Consisting of sand flats, salt marshes and sand dunes this beach is a great beach for a peaceful walk for you and your dog.

You can walk for miles across long stretches of the sand and pebbled beach, which is surrounded by several golf courses and a private estate.

Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs

places to visit in kent with a dog

This sheltered sandy cove is well-known for its sea caves, which have been called some of the best in the country.

Kingsgate is scenic and picturesque, with beautiful white chalk cliffs sheltering the sandy cove below.

It neighbours the popular Joss and Botany beaches, which are usually a lot busier and more crowded, so it is the perfect spot for those looking for a slightly more secluded beach day.

Dungeness, Romney Marsh

places to visit in kent with a dog

This shingle beach is a headland on the coast of Kent, which shelters the low-lying land of Romney Marsh.

The flat landscape spans for miles, so you can enjoy long walks with your dogs, with the views of two lighthouses along the way.

It is described as one of the most unique habitats in Britain, as it is technically classified as a desert. Despite this, it is home to a wealth of wildlife, including hundreds of species of plants and rare insects.

Ernie's Adventures

Sniffing out the best dog-friendly pubs, cottages, hotels and products in the uk, ruff guide to… margate, ramsgate & broadstairs.

Artist JMW Turner fell in love with the big skies of Thanet, and you will too. You’ll also love its beautiful sandy beaches, bracing seafront walks and retro charm. In fact, there’s very little not to like! The main towns of Thanet are Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs and each has its own individual character. There is something for everyone here, from the fairground attractions of Margate to the wartime history of Ramsgate – or take a stroll along the genteel streets of Broadstairs, which once charmed author Charles Dickens.

Ramsgate harbour

Dog-friendly Margate, Ramsgate & Broadstairs: the must-sees

There is so much to see and do in Thanet but if you’re travelling with a dog, the beaches will be the biggest draw (see my Walkies section below). Many of the area’s most popular attractions, such as the retro theme park  Dreamland , do not accept dogs – but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out.

If history is your thing, head straight to Ramsgate where you can learn all about the role it played during World War Two. The two-hour Ramsgate Blitz Walk is a great way to discover the town’s past and dogs are welcome to tag along. Walks start from Ramsgate Library at 10am on the first Sunday of the month and at 7pm on Fridays in July and August. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. If you do happen to be dog-free, however, be sure to check out the Ramsgate Tunnels – the largest network of civilian wartime tunnels in the country. Adult tickets cost £7.

Shell Grotto, Margate

The Margate Shell Grotto , made from millions of tiny shells, is also something that has to be seen to be believed. Nobody really knows when it was built, or why, but that almost makes it more interesting. Tickets cost £4 per adult. Dogs are not allowed in the grotto itself but they are welcome in the cafe and shop, which is a great place to pick up a seasidey souvenir.

Also tip your hat to Mrs Booth, the shell lady, at the end of the Margate Harbour Arm. She was JMW Turner’s landlady but went on to become his lover – and the house where they lived is now the site of the Turner Contemporary art gallery. If you’re travelling with soemone who doesn’t mind waiting outside with your dog, I can highly recommend popping in to get your culture fix. The gallery is free to enter so your visit can be as brief, or as lengthy, as you like.

Ernie at Botany Bay, Kent

Dog-friendly Margate, Ramsgate & Broadstairs: the best walks

When it comes to beautiful stretches of sand, Thanet has truly been blessed. Many beaches – such as Eastcliff and Palm Bay – are dog-friendly all year round but restrictions do apply at some of the more popular spots. If you’re travelling during the summer months, check the council website to make sure you know where pets are welcome. Also see the picture at the bottom of this article to help you plan.

The walk between Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate forms part of the Viking Coastal Trail  and is an absolute classic. Broadstairs is roughly five miles from both towns so it’s easy to break the trail up into manageable chunks. Simply follow the promenade and enjoy the fantastic sea views and sandy bays along the way.

Ernie and Nick in front of the Turner Contemporary art gallery on Margate Beach

History lovers will enjoy following the Margate Heritage Trail through town while literature buffs should check out the Turner and Dickens walk . This four-mile route, from Margate to Broadstairs will take you to several sites both the artist and author knew and loved. Alternatively, explore the famous chalk stacks of  Botany Bay  – they’re fantastic.

For more inspiration, check out the Active Ramsgate website , which has lots of walk suggestions. These range from short circular strolls in and around the town to lengthy hikes that form part of the England Coast Path.

Margate Harbour Arm

Dog-friendly Margate, Ramsgate & Broadstairs: the best pubs and cafes

There are loads of dog-friendly eateries but in Margate, head straight for the Harbour Arm . This is home to a number of independent bars and restaurants, many of which welcome dogs. The Harbour Arms is a must-visit, and pets are allowed both inside and out. Although the pub doesn’t serve food, it does have a giant jar of dog treats behind the bar. Pets are guaranteed a warm welcome at the cosy Lighthouse Bar too, and they will love curling up in front of the lovely wood burner.

In the heart of the Old Town, you’ll find the Margate Coffee Shed , which has great cakes and a quirky range of trinkets to take home as souvenirs. GB Pizza Co is also close by, as is the old-school Lifeboat Ale & Cider House , which comes complete with sawdust on the floor. The pub is a great place to go for hearty comfort food, such as pie and mash. Microbrewery Xylo , right on the seafront, also welcomes dogs and is a great place to enjoy a craft beer or two.

Veggie Hash from The Bus Cafe, Margate

If the weather is good when you visit, I’d highly recommend seeking out The Bus Café , too. Dogs are not allowed inside the red double-decker restaurant, set just off the main beach, but the staff will do everything they can to accommodate you outside. Try one of the all-day breakfast hash dishes – you won’t regret it.

In Broadstairs, don’t miss out on a trip to Morelli’s ice cream parlour , which first opened in 1932 and still has a retro soda fountain and Formica worktops. Bookworms will love The Chapel Bar & Bookshop , where you can enjoy a beer while browsing a great range of second-hand titles. And craft beer enthusiasts should head to old-fashioned ale house, The Thirty-Nine Steps . For breakfast or lunch served with a surf vibe, head to Beaches Cafe Bar . And if it’s live music you’re after, be sure to visit The Magnet micropub, which has entertainment most nights of the week.

The beach-themed garden at The Bedford Inn, Ramsgate

When in Ramsgate, the Royal Harbour Brasserie is a must-visit. It may not look much from the outside but this quirky restaurant, at the very end of the Harbour Arm, is amazing. There are also some cool bars and cafes tucked away in the Arches that overlook the harbour on Military Road. Ship-Shape Cafe allows dogs both inside and out, as does Archive Homestore – which is a great place for coffee.

The trendy Ravensgate Arms hosts regular tap takeovers and quiz nights and the recently refurbished Bedford Inn is well worth a visit, too. There’s a cool, beach-themed garden – complete with stripy deckchairs – and a big jar of dog treats behind the bar.

Brooklyn Lodge, Margate

Dog-friendly Margate, Ramsgate & Broadstairs: where to stay

Hipsters should head to Margate, where there are a cool range of B&Bs and apartments available to rent. We fell in love with Brooklyn Lodge , a New York loft-style apartment just a short walk from the old town and beaches. But if you want to pull out all the stops, head to the Sands Hotel Margate . This luxurious hotel overlooks the main sands and has a fantastic terrace.

For a coastal location that’s hard to beat, try The Bay Tree Hotel in Broadstairs. It’s right on the seafront and on a breezy day, a stroll along the coastal path will certainly blow the cobwebs away. Dogs are guaranteed to receive lots of fuss at Broadstairs’ Royal Albion Hotel , which has a fantastic beer garden overlooking Viking Bay. And in Ramsgate, pet-friendly favourites include Albion House and The Falstaff Hotel , which is a great place breakfast spot, too.

Carousel at Dreamland, Margate

How do I get to Margate, Ramsgate & Broadstairs?

Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate are situated on the south-eastern tip of Kent, which makes them a little tricky to get to – but the journey is worth it. The towns are around an hour’s drive from London via the M20 and M2 and a similar distance from Folkestone, on the south coast.

High-speed trains from St Pancras International station take around 75 minutes to Ramsgate, 85 minutes to Broadstairs and 90 minutes to Margate. There are also frequent rail services from London Victoria that take just under two hours.

Where can I find out more?

For more information about Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, check out the Visit Thanet website , which has lots of handy suggestions for people travelling to the area with dogs . The Visit Kent website is also well worth a look for broader information about the county.
