The schengen visa – what is it.

Anyone planning a visit to Europe from Pakistan should be aware of the Schengen Visa. This is an important consideration for Pakistani nationals as the visa has great benefits. The visa is currently valid in a total of 26 member countries across the European continent (known collectively as the Schengen Area ). This article provides comprehensive information on the Schengen Visa for Pakistani Citizens.

The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area, without the need for additional paperwork. For example, if you begin your travel in France and wish to move on to Germany or Spain (or any other of the 26 member states) you can do so without the need to obtain additional visas. There are no internal borders to negotiate across the Schengen Area, making it simple move from one country to another.

Schengen Visa types for Pakistani Citizens

Before applying, you need to determine the type of visa you require. The following criteria will help you decide which visa is suitable for you:

A  Uniform Schengen Visa  permits the holder to stay in, or travel within, any country in the Schengen Area, for up to a maximum of 90 days at a time within a six-month period from the date of issue. These can be issued as:

• a single entry visa, meaning the holder can only enter/exit the Schengen Area once • a double entry visa allowing a second entry within the time period • a multiple entry visa which can be used multiple times (within the permitted time limits of the visa)

A  Limited Territorial Validity Visa  is available for travel only in the particular Schengen country that originally issued the visa. Holders of this type of visa are not permitted to enter any other Schengen member state. These visas are most often used in emergency/humanitarian situations where travel documents are not normally available.

Thirdly, there is a  National Visa . This particular visa is suitable for those who wish to study or work in any one of the Schengen countries and again is available as either a single or multiple entry.

Applying for a visa

Pakistani citizens wishing to apply for a visa must begin the process by arranging an appointment at an embassy. The embassy you choose for this should be either the one relating to the country you will begin your trip (first point of entry within the Schengen Area) or to the country in which you be spending the majority of your time. You can schedule your appointment online on the VFS website or, if you prefer, in person at a local VFS centre.

You should be aware that it may take up to 2 weeks to complete the process and you will probably wait up to another 10 days for the embassy to contact you; we would therefore recommend that you apply for your visa at least one full month prior to the date you wish to travel.

The following fees currently apply: Adult visa: 60 EUROS Long stay visa (>90 days): 99 EUROS Child visa (6-12 years): 35 EUROS

There will be no fee payable under certain conditions, such as for: children under the age of 6; diplomatic passport holders, students and accompanying teachers; researchers from third world countries and participants aged 25 and under at educational non-profit conferences or other events.

You will need to obtain an application form which can be downloaded from the embassy website or you may collect a hard copy from the embassy office. Along with the completed form, you will also be required to produce the following documentary evidence:

• two passport sized photographs adhering to the official standard (full-frontal head image between 32-36mm in height with a plain background; no red-eye, reflections or shadows) • a valid passport with at least two available blank pages • a sponsorship letter explaining the reason/objective of the visit and stating the duration • evidence of travel insurance purchased showing a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUROS • copies of all relevant travel tickets and a full itinerary for the trip, including accommodation bookings and any tourist packages • proof of applicant’s status, such as birth/marriage certificates and any national identity documents or cards • employment details, such as contracts, proof of income for the past six months, leave entitlement consent from your employer and any other documentation as requested • business credentials and licenses for self-employed persons along with IT returns and proof of financial means • for retirees, pension payment documents/evidence for past six months • for students, proof of enrolment and verification from school or college

The information and documentation provided by you will be scrutinised carefully by the embassy for authenticity. Once this process has been completed, you will be invited to attend an interview with an embassy official.

The interview

This is a very important part of the visa application process and it’s useful to know what to expect before you attend. The interviewer will ask you a series of questions to ascertain the reason for your travel. You will be asked to confirm all dates and your intended itinerary. Them, you will also be expected to confirm your financial status and may be asked to provide further evidence or documentation in support of this. Lastly, you will need to be able to prove that all necessary arrangements are in place and that you understand your obligations regarding the laws of the country/countries you are intending to visit, and confirm that you will return to Pakistan at the end of the visit as planned.

Biometric testing will take place at the end of the interview and the results of this will be electronically associated with your identity documentation.

The outcome

You can expect to hear from the embassy within 10-15 days. If accepted, your visa will be posted out to you in due course. If, however, your application is not successful you will receive a letter stating the reasons why. Possible reasons for rejection could be:

• providing insufficient or incorrect personal information • the necessary travel documentation and/or a fully completed itinerary was not provided • no sponsorship letter was submitted with the application (this is essential where the travel is being sponsored) • the discovery of criminal convictions or any previous history of criminal activity • insufficient financial means or proof of income for travel • passport expiry date – the Pakistani government requires that passports need a minimum of three year’s validity • any evidence of forged documentation or incorrect information supplied • insufficient travel insurance coverage (less than 30,000 EUROS) or insurance that does not meet the required terms and conditions for the country/countries being visited • a lack of evidence relating to booked accommodation and any travel/tourist tickets (if a sponsor is organising this on applicant’s behalf, they must send the necessary documents to the embassy) • possible damage or any evidence of tampering with the applicant’s passport • any other form of non-compliance with the procedural requirements of obtaining a visa

• to check that your current passport has at least three year’s validity; if it doesn’t, you must renew it immediately – also ensure there is no damage to the passport • ensure that you explain fully your reasons for travel to the Schengen Area • make sure that all of your personal details are correct and that supporting documents are available and in the correct format • include all relevant educational/professional qualifications and evidence • organise and purchase the required amount of travel insurance • obtain sponsorship letters (where required) and collate all travel/accommodation documentation • do not, under any circumstances, provide incorrect or misleading information or attempt to forge signatures • check and double check that you have followed the correct procedures all the way through the process

When applying for a Schengen visa from a country within the  Schengen Area agreement , you can often submit your application through a 3rd party visa application center in your country (VFS Global / Gerry’s). The Schengen Area comprises Germany, Austria, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Malta. You have the flexibility to apply to any of these countries for a Schengen visa, granting you access to all listed nations upon approval.

However, if you’re uncertain about which Schengen country to choose for your visa application, a simple rule can guide you. Apply to the country where you plan to spend the majority of your days during the Schengen trip. This is known as the main destination. In case the duration is equal across multiple countries, apply to the one where you’ll enter the Schengen Area first.

Required Documents for Schengen Visa in Pakistan​

For a Schengen visa application, it is essential to attach the exact list of documents, along with a clear explanation of the purpose of your visit. While these are general requirements, some embassies may have slightly different processes. For instance, Italy may request one original set of documents along with one copy of the entire document list. On the other hand, the Netherlands may not require a copy of the entire application.

Tips for Obtaining a Schengen Visa in Pakistan

Duration of your trip:.

Obtaining a Schengen visa for the first time can be challenging. It is advisable to create a short, clear and understandable itinerary based on your financial situation and budget. For the initial application, consider planning a trip to only one or two Schengen countries. Once you have the visa, you can later modify your plans if you wish to visit more countries.

Time of the Year to Apply:

Apply well in advance, as legally you can submit a Schengen visa application up to three months before your travel date. Try to apply during the low season, allowing the embassy/consulate sufficient time to review your application. Avoid the busy months of May, June and July when European embassies worldwide experience a higher-than-average number of applications.

Build Travel History:

For tourism purposes, consider visiting popular tourist destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Turkey, etc before applying for a Schengen visa. This establishes you as a genuine tourist with a history of international travel, especially from your home country. Visit visa-free countries with a Pakistani passport to create a budget-friendly travel history.

Strengthen Financial & Professional Background:

Maintain clear and clean financial records. If you are employed, keep your salary slips and ensure that your salary is credited to your bank account through proper channels, such as a bank cheque from the company. If you have savings beyond your salary in your personal account, explain this in your cover letter to the embassy, providing a comprehensive detail of your financial situation.

Recently, on TikTok , I received hundreds of messages from people asking how they can travel to Europe. I spent a few days replying to everyone in my inbox, but the messages kept increasing, and I couldn’t handle them anymore. That’s when I decided to write a blog on this topic so that the thousands of people who follow me on TikTok can benefit from this special blog. In this blog, I will use simple and easy-to-understand English to guide everyone through the step-by-step process of obtaining a visa.

What is a Schengen visa?

So many people still do not know what is a Schengen visa, here I would explain in easy words about Schengen visa. A Schengen visa is a special type of visa that allows travelers to visit multiple European countries within the Schengen Area using a single visa. The Schengen Area is a group of European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border control at their mutual borders, allowing for easier movement between them.

With a Schengen visa, travelers can typically visit all the countries within the Schengen Area without the need for separate visas for each country. This makes it convenient for tourists, business travelers, and others who want to explore multiple European destinations during a single trip.

It’s important to note that not all European countries are part of the Schengen Area, so travelers should check which countries are covered by their Schengen visa and plan their itinerary accordingly. Additionally, the application process and requirements for a Schengen visa can vary from country to country within the Schengen Area, so travelers need to apply to the specific Schengen country they intend to visit first or spend the most time in.

The Schengen visa is a very important travel document for travelers like me. It allows you to explore a big area in Europe, covering 27 countries and spanning 4.3 million square kilometers. I had to go through some challenges to get this visa, but eventually, I got it from the Netherlands after facing many rejections. I’d like to share my experiences and explain how the Schengen visa process works.

The Schengen Area is a group of many countries, The 27 Schengen countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. If you have one Schengen visa then you can visit all of those 27 countries in Europe with your Schengen visa.

You have the freedom to choose any of these countries for your Schengen visa application. When you get this visa, it allows you to visit all the Schengen countries. If you’re not sure which country to pick, there’s a simple rule to follow.

First, choose the country where you plan to spend most of your time in the Schengen region; this is called the primary destination. If you plan to spend your time equally in different countries, then the first country you enter in the Schengen area should be your main choice. It’s important to know that this rule is not very strict. If you have a valid Schengen visa, you can go to one Schengen country and leave from another without any problem. This flexibility won’t affect your future visa applications.

How to Start Applying for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan?

To begin your journey to get a Schengen visa, you need to make sure you can apply from a country that’s part of the Schengen agreement. Usually, you start the process at a visa application center in your home country. For me, it began at Dubai in UAE.

If you live in UAE, then you can start the process in Dubai or Abu Dhabi at VFS Office, if you live in Pakistan then you can start the process from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi VFS office whichever is near to you.

Can You Apply for a Schengen Visa From Pakistan Online?

No, it is not possible to apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan online. Unfortunately, online applications for Schengen visas are not available in Pakistan. It’s important to note that all visa applications must be submitted in person at the designated visa office. Online submission of Schengen visa applications is not an option for applicants in Pakistan.

Now, let me explain the specific documents I gave when I applied for my Schengen visa to the Netherlands in Dubai UAE. These are the basic things you need for a Schengen visa application even if you are applying from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, UAE or any country, although some embassies might have slightly different requirements. For example, Italy asks for one original set of documents and a duplicate set, but the Netherlands doesn’t require the duplicate set.

Documents Required for Schengen visa:-

If you’re planning to apply for a Schengen visa, you might be wondering what documents you need to prepare. Navigating the visa application process can be perplexing, but worry not; we’ve got you covered. Below is a comprehensive list of the documents you’ll need for your short-term Schengen visa application.

Here is a comprehensive listing of the essential documents submitted with my Schengen visa application:

• Completed and printed application form. (Don’t worry in this article I will tell you how to get the form)
• Two passport-sized photographs.
• Valid passport.
• Six-month bank statement.
• Unpaid flight reservation.
• Unpaid hotel booking.
• Letter of employment.
• Leave certificate from the employer.
• The most recent three months’ salary slips.
• Medical insurance coverage of at least $30,000. (It will cost you around 100 0r 150 Dirhams, you can convert into rupees)
• Family Registration Certificate (FRC).
• Photocopies of your passport, along with previous visas and entry stamps.
• Photocopy of your Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
• A detailed cover letter outlining your day-to-day activities during your trip.
• National Tax Number (NTN) certificate and the last three years’ tax returns.
• If you have travel history, visited other countries before applying for a Schengen visa, then print your travel history from your passport, it can be stamps of visa stickers of those countries which you have visited.
• If you are married, its better to print your marriage certificate as well and include in your documents. It will help and show to the visa officer that you have family back at home and there are more chances you will return back to your home country.

I will explain again below some of the above points so you can get a clear idea:

• Visa Application Form : The first step is to complete and sign the visa application form.
• Recent Passport Photos : Attach two recent passport-sized photos taken within the last three months. These photos must meet the specific Schengen visa photo requirements.
• Valid Passport : Ensure your passport is not older than ten years and remains valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area. If you have older passports with previous visas, include them in your application.
• Round Trip Reservation or Itinerary : Prepare a comprehensive travel itinerary that includes dates and flight numbers for your entry and exit from the Schengen area. You can get flight booking from any travel agents but must be real and not just dummy, you can pay a small amount of fee to get the reservation/ booking tickets. Remember the flight booking should show in the system in case the visa officer double checks, therefore just a dummy or fake tickets will make problems.
• Travel Insurance Policy : Obtain a travel insurance policy that covers your entire stay in the Schengen territory. The policy should provide a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros for medical emergencies, including illnesses, accidents, and repatriation in case of death. You can conveniently purchase the insurance online from Europe Assistance or from any travel agency in your city.
• Proof of Accommodation : Present documentation that confirms your place of accommodation throughout your stay in the Schengen area. This can include:
• Hotel/hostel bookings. (It must be real hotel booking, you can get it on booking.com and cancel it later after getting the visa. There are so many hotels where you can cancel the booking before 24 hrs, so make sure you can cancel your hotel booking before 24 hrs or otherwise hotel will charge you.)
• A letter of invitation from a host with whom you’ll be staying. (If available that’s great, if not then leave it)
• Proof of Financial Means : Demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your Schengen stay. You can provide one of the following:
• A bank account statement showing adequate funds for your trip. Ensure the statement is no older than six months or at least 3 months.
• If someone else is paying for your trip and you are student then a sponsorship letter from someone confirming their financial support for your Schengen trip. This can be from your father or brother, this letter must be accompanied by the sponsor’s bank statement, which should also be no older than six or three months.
• If you are working in a company, a NOC letter is required from your company mentioning that the company has no issues allowing you to visit Europe.
• If you are a business owner, then a document of proof that you are the owner of business or a company trade license is required.

In addition to these generally required documents, Schengen embassies worldwide may request specific documents based on your employment status and the type of Schengen visa you’re applying for. The visa application process may seem complex, but with the right documentation and guidance, you can navigate it successfully.

After I applied, it took around 15 days for my application to come back to me. I originally asked for an eight-day stay with a single-entry visa, but the consulate gave me a multiple-entry visa that’s valid for 30 days. This longer duration allows me to visit not only the Netherlands but also other countries in the Schengen area, which I’m really looking forward to.

How to Fill the Form for A Schengen Visa:

First, you need to visit VFS Global website, for example in google search you can write ( VFS global Netherlands visa from Pakistan) See the below screenshot how I did:-

Same thing you can do for Germany, France, Italy, Spain, or any Schengen European country whichever you want to visit, in this example I am talking about Netherlands, but if you want to visit Germany then you can search in Google ( VFS global Germany visa from Pakistan ). Every European country which comes under Schengen zone has VFS website link.

So, let’s continue, I was giving you an example of Netherlands visa, so you can see in the above screenshot there is one website link, I will click on it and then it will take me to a new page which will look like the below screenshot;

Once you are on the same page as I showed you above, then you click on Apply For a Visa (Star Now) button. Then it will take you to another page which looks like the below screenshot:

Once you click on Ready to apply button, it will take you to another page which looks like the below screenshot:

And once you click on that Apply Now button, it will take you to a new website which looks like the below screenshot:

Then you can see on top right side, create an account button, if this is your first them then create an account and start filling the form with your details. Once you fill the form then print it, sign it and then next step is to book online biometrics (finger prints) booking at VFS website.

To make biometrics (finger prints) booking, you need to Schedule an appointment. From the top, in second screenshot you can see an option called Book an appointment click on that and it will take you to a login page like the below screenshot:

If you have already account there then Sign in and if it’s your first time, then click on I don’t have any account and create an account on the website and book the appointment whichever date and time suits you.

That’s all, now you have your visa application form filled & printed, also you have made the booking for your appointment, then next step is to visit the VFS office on the same date as your appointment date.

Once you arrive at the VFS office, they will take the visa application form, along with all the documents and passport and also they will take your biometrics (finger prints). That’s all really, nothing much and all you can do is to wait for the results. 🙂

Getting your first Schengen visa in Pakistan can be quite tough. So, I want to share some advice to make it easier for you. Here are my proven strategies:

Here are some tips to help you getting a Schengen Visa in Pakistan:

• Trip Duration: When you’re applying for the first time, it’s a good idea to plan a simple and affordable trip. Try not to include too many countries in your itinerary. Start with one Schengen country or maybe two. After you get the visa, you can always change your plans to visit more places. I did this and traveled to 15 countries with a single visa.
• Apply Early: Apply for the visa well in advance, up to three months before your intended travel date. It’s better to apply during the off-peak season when the embassy or consulate has more time to review your application. Keep in mind that many people apply for visas in May, June, and July, which can make it harder to get an appointment.
• Build a Travel History: If your goal is tourism, consider visiting other popular tourist destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, and Turkey before applying for a Schengen visa. This will show that you are a genuine tourist who loves to travel internationally. Also, explore countries where you can visit without a visa with a Pakistani passport to add more travel experiences to your portfolio.
• Financial and Professional Records: If you have a job, make sure your financial records are in order. Keep records of your salary, and ensure it’s deposited in your bank account through official channels, like a bank-issued check. If you have savings in addition to your regular income, mention this in your cover letter to the embassy. Being transparent about your finances helps the embassy understand your financial situation better, almost like telling your life story to a wise teacher.

Fiscal Considerations: The cost of a Schengen visa in Pakistan varies. For adults, it’s 80 Euros (you pay in PKR), and for children aged 6 to 12, it’s 40 Euros (also in PKR). It’s important to note that this fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is denied, no matter the reason.

Processing Time: Usually, it takes about 15 calendar days to process a Schengen visa. But sometimes, like in my case, it might take longer, up to 20 days. In certain situations, it can even take up to 30 days, depending on how busy the embassy or consulate is. This timeline includes the time between when you submit your application at the visa center and when the embassy/consulate reviews it.

Financial C ondition : While there are no specific financial requirements mentioned for your bank statement, I recommend having enough money in your account to cover your travel expenses comfortably. The Schengen area generally follows a daily cost of 50 Euros per day. If you are in Pakistan, better to have minimum of 25 Lakh rupees in your bank account, and if you have more than 25 Lakh in your bank account, that’s much better.

Is Obtaining a Schengen Visa in Pakistan Challenging? Getting a Schengen visa in Pakistan depends on your individual circumstances. If you have a strong professional background, a history of international travel, or family ties to Pakistan, it’s usually easier to get a Schengen visa. If your visa is rejected, don’t give up; try again and make improvements. My own experience shows that persistence pays off.

In Conclusion: My journey to get a Schengen visa had some challenges at the beginning, but I learned that persistence pays off. If you face a visa rejection, try again and improve your application. I found that getting a Schengen visa in Pakistan is quite similar across countries. However, some nations like Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands have higher approval rates because they are more welcoming to tourists.

That time I visited 12 countries, including Australia and the UK, among others. Surprisingly, my Schengen visa was rejected. I tried reapplying, but it was rejected again. In the meantime, I applied for a USA visa and was successful on my first attempt. However, when I reapplied for the Schengen visa, it was rejected once more. I persisted and tried a total of 16 times for the Schengen visa, but it was denied each time. Despite these setbacks, I never gave up. Finally, on my 17th attempt, they approved my Schengen visa.

I’m sharing my story to emphasize the importance of perseverance. Sometimes people obtain a Schengen visa on their first try with a fresh passport, while others, like me, face repeated rejections despite having a strong travel history. So, don’t hesitate and overthink it. Give it a shot. If you have a travel history, apply for the Schengen visa. Even if you don’t, still go ahead and apply. You might be the fortunate one. It’s just a small application fee, and taking a chance won’t break your bank account. 🙂

Update (Feb 17, 2020): As per the updated Schengen Visa Code, the EU will now issue multiple-entry visas with the validity of one, three and five years. Those holding the multiple-entry visa can travel to the Schengen Zone as many times as they want. However, they can only stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day time period.

The new rules suggest that 1-year multiple-entry visa will only be issued to those applicants who have lawfully obtained and used three Schengen visas during the last two years. Meanwhile, in order to obtain the 2-year multiple-entry visa, the applicant must have used a 1-year multiple-entry visa within the last two years.

According to the updated Visa Code, the 5-year multiple-entry Schengen Visa will only be issued to the applicants who have used their 3-year multiple-entry visa within the last three years.

Planning to spend your vacations skiing in the Swiss Alps, sipping coffee on Champs-Élysées Avenue in Paris, or visiting medieval landmarks and historic locations in Rome? If so, you’ll need a valid Schengen Visa stamped on your passport in order to travel to Switzerland, France, Italy, or almost any other European country for that matter. For green passport holders, applying for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan may seem a bit daunting, but contrary to popular belief, the process is quite straightforward, as long as you fulfil all the requirements and keep your documents in order.

There is a good chance that you first stumbled across the word ‘Schengen’ during your preliminary research on travelling to Europe from Pakistan, or maybe you heard your travel agent talk about it and are now wondering what it actually means. What is a Schengen Visa?

What is the Schengen Area?

Also referred to as the Schengen Zone, the Schengen Area is the largest free-travel area in the world. It comprises 26 countries that have abolished their internal borders to allow unrestricted and free movement of residents as well as foreign nationals holding the Schengen Visa.

The Schengen Area covers most of the countries in the European Union – except the United Kingdom, Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus. While the residents of these countries can visit the Schengen Area visa-free for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period, they would still require their valid passports to travel through the borders.

Meanwhile, four non-EU countries, including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein are also included in the Schengen Area. So, don’t confuse the EU with the Schengen Area, as they are both quite different.

The Schengen Area Entry Requirements

Before we discuss the types of visa, required documents and how to apply for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan, here is a brief overview of the entry requirements one must fulfil to enter the Schengen territory.

• Have a passport that is valid for at least 3 more months after your trip ends
• A Schengen visa that is valid for a stay of maximum 90 days within a 180-day period
• Travel insurance in accordance with the Schengen visa requirements
• Return tickets or enough funds to prove that you can purchase one
• Documents proving your purpose of travel and the dates you will be staying there

Who needs a Schengen Visa?

All Pakistani citizens need to apply for a Schengen Visa in order to travel to most of the holiday destinations in Europe. However, in case you have dual nationality, you may or may not be allowed visa-free entry into the Schengen Area, depending on the passport you choose to travel with.

For instance, as of right now, U.S.-passport holders can travel to any of the 26 member countries for up to 90 days (for tourism or business) without having to obtain a Schengen Visa.

Schengen Visa Types

There are different types of Schengen visa one can apply for, depending on the purpose of travel, which is something that needs to be selected while filling the Schengen Visa application form. They can be categorized as short-stay, long-stay, airport transit or transit visa. However, since long-term visas are only granted to the individuals who are studying, working or residing in one of the Schengen countries, we’ll be focusing on short-stay and other similar visas. 

It is important to clarify that apart from a multiple-entry visa, which generally allows you to stay in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180 days period, the duration of stay for your single-entry visa or double-entry visa depends on the embassy or consulate you’ve applied at.

Here are the types of Schengen Visa according to the purpose of entry.

If you are planning to travel to any of the countries included in the Schengen Zone for sightseeing and experiencing the culture, you need to select this purpose of travelling in your Schengen Visa application form.

The tourist visa is the most common type of Schengen Visa that people from Pakistan apply for. At the earliest, you can apply for a Schengen Tourist Visa from Pakistan three months before your intended date of travel. At the very least, it is advised to apply for this short-stay visa at least 15 working days before your trip. Tourist visas are valid for a stay up to 90 days within a 180-day time frame.

Airport Transit

People travelling through the international zone of a Schengen country airport need to possess Airport Transit Visa. However, they can’t use this to enter a Schengen member country. 

Pakistani citizens need to obtain an airport transit visa if they fall under this category.

This purpose of travel is only selected if you will be stopping over in a Schengen country for a very short period. These visas are usually obtained by seafarers or those travelling on a cruise ship, as they stop at certain ports for a very limited amount of time.

People who have relatives or friends legally residing in one of the Schengen countries may be eligible to apply for this type of visa. Generally referred to as a Schengen Visit Visa, selecting this purpose of travel would require the applicant to submit a letter of invitation along with other specific documents at the time of visa application submission. 

This is also a short-stay visa meant for people who have to travel to and from the Schengen countries for business purposes. 

You can only select “Official Visit” as your purpose of entry while applying for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan if you are travelling to a country in the Schengen Zone on official duty. Government officials travelling with delegations with identical travel dates have to apply for this type of visa. 

This type of visa enables patients seeking medical treatment to travel to any of the Schengen countries. If you select ‘Medical Reasons’ as your purpose of travel, you’ll be required to submit your medical records as well as some other specific documents. Generally, patients looking to undergo treatment in any of the member countries are allowed to stay at a clinic or a hospital for up to three months within a certain time frame. This can vary on a case-to-case basis.

Students who plan on attending courses at any educational institution in the Schengen Area for a period shorter than three months or have to take an entrance exam for school or university in the territory need to apply for a Schengen Study Visa.

However, this visa has short-term validity. Most students who have to continue their studies for a longer period of time are granted long-term National Visa, which enables them to study as well as work in their country of stay for a period of up to 12 months.

Cultural, Sports, Religious Events and Film Crews

This is yet another short-stay visa for those who want to travel to Europe to participate in a religious, cultural, entertainment or sports event. Film and production crews also select this option as their purpose of travel while applying for a Schengen Visa.

Schengen Visa Application Requirements

These are the standard documents that are usually required by the embassies and consulates for granting Schengen Visa. However, the requirements might vary as per the purpose of travel and other specifications. 

List of required documents 

• Two sets of duly filled and signed Common Schengen Application Form (Original + photocopy)
• Three recent passport size photos that are taken within the past three months. Make sure the pictures aren’t doctored in any way. Side pose, hats and veils are also not allowed. The photos must be coloured.
• A passport that’s valid for at least three more months beyond the date you plan to exit the Schengen Zone. Moreover, it must have two blank pages to stamp the visa.
• Older stamped passports and copies of all previous visas (if any)
• Copy of Smart National Identity Card (CNIC) 
• Two copies of marriage certificate/nikahnama along with its English translation (if any)
• NADRA-issued Family Registration Certificate (FRC) attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• Round trip ticket reservation or itinerary. This must include specifications such as flight numbers and dates of travel as well as entry and exit points. Please note that you don’t need to book your tickets or make any payments before obtaining the visa. Simply reserving the return flights is enough as long as you have documentation to prove it.
• Travel health insurance policy with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros.
• Proof of accommodation. This shows where you will be staying throughout your stay in the Schengen Zone. You can submit your hotel or hostel reservation. In case you will be staying with a friend or a relative, their address along with a letter of invitation will be required.
• Proof of funds. This document proves you have the financial means to support yourself throughout your stay in the Schengen Area. You can do so through your bank account statement of the past six months, a sponsorship letter confirming that someone else will finance your trip along with the sponsor’s bank statement for Schengen Visa, or a combination of both

Along with the aforementioned documents, embassies also require some additional documents from the individual applying for a Schengen visa from Pakistan as well as other countries. These specific requirements are usually based on the visa applicant’s marital status, employment status and age, among other factors.

For employed individuals

• The Contract of Employment of Confirmation of Employment letter that states the position the applicant holds within the company as well as their starting date.
• Bank statement of the past 6 months
• Leave permission for a certain number of days on the company letterhead signed by the employer
• Salary slips for the past 3 months
• Tax documentation. This can be either the Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source provided by the company.

For self-employed visa applicants

• A copy of license proving that your business is registered with the concerned authorities 
• A 6-month bank statement of the company
• Income Tax Return

For attending conferences 

• Invitation to attend a conference in the Schengen territory sent directly to the embassy.
• Proof of registration to attend the event
• Receipt of payment (if any)
• Bank statement of the past six months

For student candidates

• Proof of enrolment in a school, college or university
• No-objection certificate from the educational institute

For retired individuals 

• The pension statement of the past 6 months

If a visa applicant is married to an EU citizen

• A Confirmation of Employment letter from the spouse’s employer in Europe
• Spouse’s valid passport
• An official marriage certificate

For minors/underage Schengen visa applicants

If a minor is travelling with parents or legal guardian(s):

• Birth certificate along with translated copies
• A visa application form signed by both parents or legal guardian(s)
• In case of a custody issue, a family court order will be required 
• Copies of CNIC or passports of both parents

If the minor is travelling alone:

• A notarized parental authorization letter that is signed by both of the parents or the legal guardian(s), along with the above-mentioned documents

Minimum Bank Balance Requirements

This is one of the requirements that most people struggle with while applying for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan.

One thing you need to understand is that your bank statement serves as proof that you have enough funds to pay for your travel and accommodation expenses during your trip to Europe. While applicants are usually asked to submit a 6-month statement of their bank transactions and available balance, they are sometimes required to produce a statement dating back a year. In some cases, the company’s bank statement might also be required.

Ideally, your bank statement for the past 6 months needs to show a balance of at least 3000 Euros.

Schengen Travel Insurance Requirements

Buying travel insurance is one of the most important requirements for applying for a Schengen visa from Pakistan.

• Provides a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros

How to Apply for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan

Where to apply for a Schengen visa in Pakistan?

In order to apply for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan, you first need to determine your purpose of travel and which country you would be travelling to. In case you are visiting more than countries in the Schengen Area, you must apply at the embassy or consulate of the country where you’ll be spending most of your time. However, in case it is hard to determine which country you’ll be staying for the longest duration in, you must select the mission of the country that will be your point of entry into the Schengen Zone.

The Schengen Visa fee from Pakistan

• The Schengen Visa fee for adults is 60 Euros.
• Visa fee for children between 6 to 12 years of age is 35 Euros
• Children younger than the age of, diplomatic and official passport holders, students accompanying teachers on a school trip and those with an EU-national family member don’t have to pay a visa fee.

Please note that starting from the first Monday of February 2020, the Schengen Visa fee for adults and children will be increased to 80 and 40 Euros, respectively.

Application process

For the sake of convenience, let’s break down the process of visa application for the Schengen areas:

Step 1: Determine your purpose of travel to identify the Schengen Visa type you have to apply for

Step 2: Figure out where you’re supposed to lodge your application. In Pakistan, the missions of most European countries are situated in Islamabad.

Step 3: Schedule a visa appointment at the embassy or consulate of your chosen Schengen country. You will need to check the official website of the respective mission to find out if an appointment can be booked online or if you have to do it in person. 

Step 4: Download the Schengen Visa online application form and fill it correctly. No matter which country you’re travelling to, the form is going to be the same. You will be required to fill in your personal details, some information about your background, the purpose of travelling and other details about your planned trip.

Make sure the form is properly filled and there are no blank columns. If you think a certain question has no relation to your case, mark it as N/A. Moreover, print the duly filled form twice and sign both copies.

Step 5: Collect all of the required documents. This includes the standard required documents that are mentioned above as well as your case-specific documents that may vary with each visa type and your chosen mission.

Step 6: You’ll shortly receive a call for an interview. This interview will be held in person, usually the embassy or consulate of your chosen country. You will hand over your documents along with the visa application form to the visa consular you meet there.

Generally, it takes at most 15 days for a Schengen visa to be processed. However, in some cases, the period may be extended up to 30 days.

Step 9: Receive your passport

If your Schengen Visa is approved, carefully read the information written on the visa stickers and check the validity of your visa. What is the difference between visa validity and duration of stay?

The terms ‘Duration of Stay’ and Visa Validity’ are not interchangeable.

While the duration of stay refers to the maximum number of days you are allowed to stay in the Schengen territory, visa validity is the period of time during which you can use your visa to travel to your desired location.

Is the United Kingdom part of the Schengen Area?

No, the United Kingdom is not a part of the Schengen Area. You will have to apply for a separate visa if you wish to travel to the UK.
