What people love about Europe Tours for Seniors

An incredible level of detail in every story Luke shares with the group. Honestly no idea how he knows so much without ever hesitating to find and think of more rich history to share. Luke’s charisma and energy are really contagious and he’s non-stop fun!
This tour was amazing. Luke provided 42 guest with the best experience anyone could ask for. His vast knowledge of the history of the areas we explored were the best. His suggestions for walk about and eateries were spot on. Luke would sit and talk with all his guests and answer any question. Take groups on walking tours and indulge in the occasional ale with the group. Funny, compassionate about his work and caring about the groups and environment he loves so much. My wife and I have already researched alternate tours led by Luke so we can join him and learn from his vast knowledge of the areas he will be working in. If anyone is looking for an amazing tour with a guide who’s knowledge of history with added fun you should look up tours led by Luke. #1 tour guide hands down. Thanks for a wonderful experience Luke!
Our guide Michelle was excellent. The city sightseeing tours on the bus were a waste of time. Our local tour guide in Edinburgh was awful. Why the laughing through most of her talking? Very irritating. The Fish & Chips dinner in the local dumpy restaurant was the worst meal of the trip. Otherwise just what we expected.

Great European Trips for Seniors (Tour Options for Varying Activity Levels)

seniors touring europe and looking at a map

Europe is a stunning destination. And. it’s somewhere that everyone should visit at least once in their lives.

The beauty of Europe is that there are so many different cultures all right next to each other. Whether you are looking for mountains or forests, cities or villages, river cruises or boat trips, water or land, you will find it there.

Traveling to Europe for the first time as a senior citizen can be scary though. But, there are some convenient and easy European trips for seniors. Amy of these can help you to enjoy the atmosphere of Europe without the stress of arranging your own trip.

Europe Feels Like a New World

Europe can feel like a whole new world for a first-time visitor.

Each country, and sometimes even each city, can have its own culture. There are parts of Europe that tend to have a lot of people who speak fluent English. But there are some areas where English is far less common.

Some parts of Europe are flat and easy to navigate while others are mountainous and could be a challenge for a senior traveler. In some parts of Europe, it’s easy to find familiar foods. Bit on other parts of the continent, the ‘traditional cuisine’ can seem rather alien. These are things that it’s handy to know about before you travel.

Most of mainland Europe has adopted the Euro. However, there are still some countries that keep their own currency. So it’s useful to know what you need to bring with you currency-wise before you leave.

Tour Operators Make Your Journey Stress-Free

When you work with a company that offers European trips for seniors, the logistics are dealt-with for you. You won’t have to do all that research yourself. Let someone else do the work and you (or your older relatives) can enjoy the fun.

There are many companies that offer European packages. Here are a few of my favorites.

11 Days in Belgium and Holland

Belgium and Holland are wonderful places to visit. Rick Steves Tours offers some great tours. We highly recommend their eleven day tour of the area which takes visitors through Amsterdam, Bruges, Deflt and Ghent.

It’s a walking-heavy tour so you’ll need to be moderately fit. There are some gentle hills and some stairs. But if you are OK with those you’ll find the scenery is incredible. Plus, the architecture is stunning.

Explore the History and Culture of the UK

The UK is full of history and culture and is another place that Rick Steves offers tours of.

You can pick and choose the places to visit. And, depending on whether you want to stay in cities or explore the countryside, there are plenty of options.

The Lake District is a good choice for nature lovers. London and Liverpool are good cities to explore. Blackpool and Brighton are classic tourist destinations on the coast. Finally, Durham is a place with lots of historic buildings. There’s something for everyone.

Whistle-stop Tours for the Highlights of the Usual Sights

If a whistle-stop tour of some of the best sights in Europe is more your thing, then Tourradar offers some great European trips for seniors.

Fly out to London, and see the sights there, before spending the day in Paris. Then on to Burgundy, exploring the Alps for a few days. Next up is Tuscany, Pisa and Rome. After spending a day in Rome, head on to Venice, Innsbruck, Munich and Bavaria. After stopping in the Rhine Valley, you’ll go to Amsterdam and then on to Bruges before returning to London. Shew!

You’ll sample wines, chocolate, and cheese along the way, as well as classic Bavarian beer. It’s a great choice for those who want to explore the best that Europe has to offer. You’ll also need to have the energy and stamina to keep up.

senior couple in paris on a european trip

Slower Paced Tours Through All of Europe

If the whistle-stop tour above makes you feel tired thinking about it, try a slightly slower paced tour. There’s also a 22-day tour that hits a few more destinations but spends a little more time at each stop.

This a history-focused tour. You’ll get to spend the day in Paris, Lucerne, Rome, Berlin, and Amsterdam with plenty of other short stops along the way.

You can choose what activities you want to take part in and there are opportunities to go off on your own in some areas. You’ll get to sample the best food, wine and beer, and see some stunning scenery. You can cruise the canals in Venice, see the Tower of Pisa, and take a gentle walk around Amsterdam’s quaint historic streets.

Travel Tips for Seniors Touring in Europe

  • Expect to Walk a Lot – In many parts of Europe, people love walking. Some countries, such as the Netherlands, are very flat and are full of cyclists. Some countries are quite hilly but with long, narrow streets. People walk far more in Europe than they do in the USA, and cities tend to have everything you need in close proximity. Be prepared and pack sensible shoes.
  • Train Travel is Affordable and Fun – Mainland Europe has good train infrastructure, so getting from one city to another and even one country to another can be quite affordable. A train tour of Europe makes for a good extended holiday.
  • Consider the Off-Season – If you’re heading to traditionally popular tourist destinations such as Paris or Rome, then consider doing so during the off-season when hotels are cheaper, the cities are less crowded, and you’ll be able to get a more authentic feel of what the destination is like.
  • Learn a Few Words of the Language – While most people in big cities in Europe speak decent English and are quite eager to show off their language skills you will find that a few words of the local language will go a long way. In smaller cafes you might get better prices and service if you try to communicate in the local language, and you’ll find that hospitality is generally warmer when you show you’re making an effort. You don’t have to be fluent, but learning the basics is always helpful!
  • Not all Countries use the Euro – Most countries in Mainland Europe use the Euro but there are still a few that have held on to their own currency. Check before you travel and have a little bit of each currency you need if you’re going to several countries. For example, Denmark uses the Krone. Some places accept the Euro too but you will lose out with the exchange rate they offer.

Europe Can Be Whatever You Want it to Be

The best thing about Europe is that each country has retained its own identity. It’s a stunning place that is fun to explore and there’s something for everyone there.

European trips for seniors are fun and vibrant and many operators offer trips for all ages that are designed with seniors in mind. So the kids can come along as well and have fun while the trip is structured to ensure that older travelers are comfortable and well taken care of. European vacations can even be trips where you can bring the elderly parents .

Whether you’re a world-weary traveler who has been there, done that already, or someone who would be heading to europe for the very first time, a good tour operator will help you fall in love with Europe’s culture, sights, sounds and smells.

Tours are great value for money compared to booking everything yourself. Plus, you can get an incredible trip for what works out at about $100 per day in many cases. So why not treat yourself to a vacation experience with a difference in one of the most unique parts of the world.

Final Recommendation

I highly recommend that you make your first trip to the United Kingdom.

Yes, they’re not on the mainland but it’s just a short ferry ride from Calais and the history and culture is incredible. Plus, you will already be familiar with the language and many of the customs.

Start in London with an obligatory look at Buckingham Palace. Then, head up to York to see the York Minster and walk the walls of the city. Next, continue North to Scotland to see the castles and explore the highlands.

You get three very different places in a short trip. But, you’ll find the people and culture varied too. Sample some Scottish Whisky and enjoy some fish & chips from a country that really does know its fish!

A Stress-free Way to See the Continent

Post-retirement is an excellent time to go see the world, as you’re less likely to have pressing engagements and can spend more time at your destination. Europe is a great option for seniors as many of the top destinations are not too far from each other cutting down on travel time, while still providing an exciting and enriching travel experience. It’s also relatively easy to find a tour group that goes to the specific destinations you want to see in Europe, and travel in comfort at the same time.

Many different touring groups that cater to seniors exist and can be a great way to see a portion of Europe without worrying about arranging transportation or planning an itinerary. Often times these tours will include things like meals, accommodations and even flights. The tours take many different forms and lengths, some combining plane and bus travel, others taking place on riverboats or cruise ships. Do some research to find a tour group that goes to the destinations you’ve always wanted to see.

Many cruise companies are strictly riverboat cruises, but they can still offer a good selection of many different destinations and attractions. Some companies also offer small ship cruises for places like Greece and other regions of the Mediterranean, where something larger than a riverboat is needed to traverse the sea. Also many companies have bus tours for covering smaller regions on the mainland.

Think about what countries you want to see in Europe, as this can help determine your method of travel. For example, if you’d like to see the countries on the Mediterranean like Spain , France , Italy  and Greece , you might want to consider taking a conventional cruise. Or if you’re interested in some the countries along the Rhine like the Netherlands , Germany , France and Switzerland  a riverboat cruise is perfect for you. If the countries you would like to visit are not very close to each other Like the U.K . and Italy, your best bet is a combination plane and bus tour.

While the big landmarks are always impressive, there are many other wonders of the world to be seen while touring Europe as a senior. If you’re visiting Europe in spring, you absolutely have to visit the Netherlands while its tulips and other flowers are in bloom. The best place to see them is Keukenhof, a massive garden dedicated to some 800 varieties of tulip, with over 7 million bulbs being planted each spring. The park itself is beautiful, with 80 acres of curated landscaping.

Europe is an endless tapestry of colourful cultures, jaw-dropping discoveries and soulful escapades. A stunning landmass bursting with lively cities, spectacular wildlife and immersive moments, this is a continent packed with lots of experiences for the mature traveller. Whatever you want to do – be it rambling, traversing, hiking, trekking or maybe simply wandering – Europe comes with a dash of adventure to astound every nomad’s heart.

Every globetrotter knows that some holiday destinations resonate with certain age groups more than any other. And if you’re lounging through your silver years, the chances are that Europe is certainly near the top of your bucket list. The continent’s stunning cities are where you can enjoy spoonfuls of the world’s most envied experiences – from historic architecture and culture-rich highlights to breathtaking scenery and blissful getaways.

6 Best Cities To Visit in Europe For Senior Travellers

1- barcelona.

Barcelona

Riddled with captivating sights and vibrant energy, Barcelona is Spain’s second city and the capital of Catalonia.

This is a patchwork of unending urban beauty, a gorgeous escape that exudes limitless inspiration as far as the eye can see.

The city boasts many stunning works of art from mighty architectural monuments down to chic pieces painted on streets and sidewalks.

Travelling here is not just enjoyable, it’s also easy as nearly a quarter of the natives speak English.

The country has excellent transport links and is even home to hundreds of expatriates from across the continent.

Barcelona is the perfect spot for mature travellers looking to soak up some Spanish culture, gorge on local cuisine or revel in some nightlife love. And if you’re looking to treat yourself, the city sports great shopping centres and a selection of irresistible beaches for you to dive in.

Rome

Ancient, awe-inspiring and majestic, Rome is a city often associated with medieval beauty and rich heritage.

This is a metropolis deeply rooted in history, sporting visions of grand buildings and lofty ruins. And no matter what part of the city you roam, you’ll be overwhelmed by the world-famous attractions, wonderful sights, friendly locals and a lesson in history that you’ll never forget.

This is where you can visit iconic tourist stops such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon, or spend time admiring the countless architectural wonders that vie for your attention everywhere you look.

berlin at night

Berlin will hold plenty of appeal for the seasoned traveller.

A beautifully laid out medley of merry neighbourhoods, energetic vibes and irresistible artwork, this is a destination of alluring beauty and culture like no other.

The city is also one of the easiest in Europe for travelling.

The roads and transport links are excellent and are perfectly designed for traversing and touring to your heart’s content.

Berlin is a sweet escape for mature travellers looking to appreciate a laid-back vacation in style. The city boasts countless historic museums, glorious flowering parks and a handful of attractive lakeside and canalside getaways. And whether you’re hunting world-famous monuments, delectable German dishes or unusual city experiences, this is one place you’ll wish you’ll never have to leave.

mykonos

A lovely little coastal city in Greece, Mykonos is truly a slice of heaven on earth. Picture-perfect beaches and crystal clear waters lure in travellers from around the world while gourmet restaurants and little pockets of wildlife lie scattered throughout the area.

The city itself is a beautiful labyrinth of winding roads and quaint attractions with camera-ready scenes around every corner.

Mykonos is also home to countless historic sites such as Little Venice, making it one of the most beloved and carefully preserved destinations in the country.

best cities to visit in europe - Porto

The heart-stealing city of Porto is not just one of Europe’s top-rated destinations, it’s also one of the most deliciously unique experiences on the planet.

A stunning collection of ancient monuments, heavenly parks and quaint streets come together to create an extraordinary holiday city like no other.

Porto is a beloved stop for all savvy travellers and wine lovers – the wine cellars here are an unmissable treat, as is the Instagram-worthy scenery that beckons on every street corner.

Porto is a great vacation choice for older travellers. The prices here are much lower than most other European cities and you’re always sure to find traditional festivals, decent golfing and fantastic coastlines close by, no matter where you are in the city. You’ll also find that most locals favour speaking English to Portuguese, making your travel experience all the better.

Sometimes a dose of adventure off the beaten track is exactly what you need to remain vigorous. Tucked away between Eastern and Central Europe for over a millennium, Zagreb is a charming city that steals away tourist hearts at first glance.

Being the capital of Croatia, this city boasts a number of ancient attractions including courtyards, galleries and museums waiting to be explored.

As the city is relatively small, you can visit all its major landmarks easily and without much walking.

You’ll find a number of great restaurants where you can try out some authentic Croatian cuisine and a handful of beautiful forests and parks where you can unwind in peace.

You’ll also experience some interesting cultural highlights while touring here, such as the Changing of the Guard and interactive theatre nights.

Amazing European Cities For Senior-Friendly Travel

Senior travel europe: lisbon, portugal.

senior travel-alfama-lisbon

As the second oldest city in the world after Athens, Lisbon is rich in history and culture with Roman, German, and Moorish influences. Although exploring the city by foot is a great way to experience its charm, getting around Lisbon in a vintage tram is a major tourist activity for travellers of all ages. The best option for senior travellers would be purchasing a travel card that offers free entry into museums, top tourist attractions, and unlimited bus, tram, and metro rides.

senior travel-tram-lisbon

Book a tram tour or ride the famous yellow wooden tram 28 that travels through Alfama , the historic soul of Lisbon, well-known for its maze-like cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured houses and picturesque river views. In June and throughout summer, the annual street festival, Festas de Lisboa , transforms Alfama into a carnival-like atmosphere. Head to the Azulejo (‘Tile’) Museum to marvel at the intricate tin-glazed ceramic tilework, symbolising Portugal’s traditional art form. Spend time painting your own tile as a keepsake or souvenir for a loved one.

europe trip-São Vicente De Fora-lisbon

Wander around São Jorge Castle for a trip back in Moorish times and capture some of the most captivating views towering over Alfama. There are also ancient churches in the area, like the 17th century São Vicente De Fora Monastery , which features the most extensive and stunning baroque tile panels, including a series of panels depicting the fables of La Fontaine (commonly known as Aesop Fables). The monastery also houses the marble tomb of Catherine of Bragança. This Portuguese princess became the queen of England when she married King Charles II in 1662.

Next, head to Portas do Sol for a must-see viewpoint of old Lisbon and entertaining performances from street musicians. End your tour at Alfama by dining at Jardim Do Tabaco , a trendy waterfront area filled with hip eateries and be serenaded by fado music while soaking in the captivating view of the Tagus River at sunset.

europe tour-belem tower-portugal

Don’t leave Lisbon without exploring the Belem Tower , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and iconic monument that is a testament to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. The pale stonework of the tower is embellished with nautical and Christian religious symbols. The striking feature in the interior is a narrow spiral staircase that leads to many different rooms, like the king’s chamber, with an elegant balcony to catch the breeze along the riverbank.

After visiting the tower, drop by the famous Pastéis de Belém and treat yourself to authentic Pastel de Nata (Portuguese egg tart), which you won’t regret and hands down the most renowned pastry to eat in Portugal.

If you have more days to spend in Portugal, book a wine tour to Quinta do Monte d’Oiro (the Hill of Gold), just 50 minutes away from Lisbon , famed for its reputation as a winery since the 19th century. Indulge in wine-tasting sessions, and tour the vineyard, cellar and barrel ageing room. Complete your wine tour with a countryside picnic with perfectly balanced red wine paired with the king of Portuguese cheese, queijo da serra  and a stunning hill view.

Senior Travel Europe: Corfu, Greece

europe trip-corfu island-greece

Forget the crowded and expensive islands of Mykonos and Santorini, a Europe trip to Corfu offers a more affordable island getaway with pristine beaches, great food, and natural wonders that appeals to many senior travellers.

Seniors with an adventurous streak can rent a boat and cruise solo or with a spouse along the coastlines of Corfu as an exciting way to kick off a Greek island vacation. Recharge with amazing views of crystal clear waters surrounded by lush greenery and stop by local joints conveniently located along the coastline for food and drinks. You can even pull over at a private bay, relax on your boat, or walk along the sandy shores. Don’t forget to check the rented boat for extra life jackets and sufficient gas before your journey.

europe trip-corfu-old town

Explore the old town of Corfu by wandering around buildings with Venetian architecture, colourful houses with iron balconies and narrow alleyways. Laundry hanging on a line between adjacent houses are a common sight in this enchanting town. One of the best things to do around the old town is to sit back and relax over a glass of wine.  Salto Wine Bar  offers a modern ambience to indulge in wine pairings and scrumptious meals with traditional Greek and Spanish influences.

Join an olive oil tasting tour and visit olive groves as Corfu island is home to over 4 million olive trees. Spend a lazy afternoon at The Governors and learn more about olive oil production from the friendly owners of the establishment. Don’t miss the tasty bites drizzled with delicious olive oil. Another natural product used since ancient times in Greece is honey. Head over to  the bee shop owned by Panagiotis Vasilakis . Known locally as ‘Mr Honey’, this is the place to get up close with Mr Honey’s bees, learn about the process of collecting honey and get a free sample of honey or purchase a bottle to take home with you.

europe tour-Paleokastritsa monastery-corfu

Among the notable ancient monasteries to visit around Corfu is the Paleokastritsa Monastery . Located on a remote hill towering over the beach with the same name and surrounded by steep cliffs, this 13th-century Byzantine monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The sanctuary covers two levels. A flower garden with lush olive and cypress trees is on the lower level. There is also a small museum of Byzantine relics and books. The upper level of the monastery has a spacious courtyard and a small chapel. Locals believe that people who toss a coin into the well at the centre of the courtyard will one day return to Corfu . Since the Paleokastritsa still operates as a monastery, you will encounter monks passing by during your visit. However, the monks’ living quarters are not accessible to the public.

europe trip-canal d'amour-corfu

One of the most picturesque beaches in Corfu,  Canal d’Amour , or Love Canal, is famous for unique sandstone rocks forming a natural fjord-like canal. Lay on the beach or swim in the Corfu Channel of Love, which boasts detoxifying and healing properties due to its high mineral content. The canal isn’t too long or fully submerged in water. Sit on the rocks, scoop up and apply handfuls of clay on your body and hair for a natural mud bath!

Treat yourself to a luxurious fine dining experience at Etrusco Restaurant owned by Michelin Starred chef Ettore Botrini for picture-perfect plates of food such as the  amuse bouche  squid ink caviar,   swordfish  carpaccio, bourdeto  (a local spicy tomato, onion and garlic stew with  rascasse ), triumph of the sea (a dry seafood pasta with shrimps, mussels and clams), and celery sorbet with granola, green chartreuse  ice, and mint. Enjoy the view from the terrace overlooking the stunning island view for a memorable ending to your Corfu, Europe trip.

Don’t miss the opportunity to get your caffeine fix at Farmgate, which serves an exquisite range of coffee with freshly made pastries, cakes and gluten-free treats.

europe trip-gaol-cork

Senior history buffs will enjoy exploring Cork City Gaol for its Gothic architecture that resembles more of a castle than a prison. Primarily a women’s prison in the 19th century. Many social reformists and politicians were held captive in this prison during the War of Independence.

Take a tour around the interior of the penitentiary, comprising narrow, gloomy cells and pale stonewall corridors, for a glimpse of history and life as a prisoner in tumultuous times. If you are up for a challenge, you can even get locked in a cell! In addition, you may be in luck to witness a photo shoot or filming at the West Wing of the Cork City Gaol. This corporate event venue is also available for various occasions, including wedding ceremonies.

Prefer spending an afternoon at a quirky museum? Then Cork Butter Museum will be a perfect place to add to your Cork city travel itinerary. Dedicated to the long-standing and rich history of Cork’s dairy products ranging from milk, butter and cheese, you can explore the history of butter-making, watch a demonstration of the old-fashioned way of churning butter, view modern machinery used in creameries for the butter-making process and packaging as well as fascinating labels of various Irish creameries in the good old days.

europe tour-st. fin barre-cork

One of the most stunning cathedrals to visit in Cork is The St Fin Barre’s Cathedral . The Anglican cathedral, originally a Christian monastery, was established by its patron Saint Fin Barre in the 7th century. The cathedral as it stands today has undergone numerous renovations over the ages.

The current cathedral, built on Cork limestone and walls lined with red Cork marble, has an awe-inspiring exterior. Gothic-style spires and sculptures of gargoyles with different animal heads and a tympanum (semi-circular or triangular decorative wall surface over an entrance) showing the Resurrection scene welcome patrons at the main entrance. Walk into the cathedral and marvel at vibrant-coloured stained glasses depicting scenes from the Bible. Other unique features to look out for include 12th-century carved stone heads, a vintage organ, and an unusual cathedral décor – a suspended 24-pound cannonball with an equally impressive history.

europe trip-franciscan well-cork

Since Cork has a world-famous reputation for breweries and fine local craft beer, visiting the Franciscan Well Brewery is a must. The brewery’s location has roots in ancient history, being on the grounds of an old Franciscan monastery with a well believed to have healing properties! Have a relaxing day choosing from a wide range of in-house lager, ale, stout or wheat beer and enjoy your selection in the garden to live entertainment from local musicians belting traditional Irish tunes.

Apart from efficient public transportation, low hills and curb cuts aligned to the street level, Amsterdam is one of the safest cities in the world for senior travel with a low crime rate. Amsterdam’s charm lies in the city centre, with extensive cafes and coffee shops, high-end restaurants, and famous museums.

Stroll along the canals of Amsterdam at the city centre known as Grachtengordel and walk over cobblestone bridges and alleyways for a scenic view. Try famous Amsterdam pastries like Poffertjes (mini pancakes) with piping hot coffee from street bakeries or pastry shops. You can even go shopping for souvenirs like bicycle bells or a pair of clogs representing the rich history of Dutch culture and a common sight in Dutch villages where women wear clogs with traditional Dutch attire.

europe tour-Anne Frank House-amsterdam

If there is one museum that is a must-visit in Amsterdam , it is undoubtedly the Anne Frank House . The annexe served as a hideaway for Anne Frank and her family from Nazi soldiers during the height of World War II. While hiding for two years, Anne Frank kept a journal in the Dutch language that soon became known as The Diary of Anne Frank, published after the end of World War II.

Celebrated as one of the most important literary works on the planet, reading the book will help you put things in perspective as you tour the museum and discover movable bookcases protecting the secret entrance to tiny rooms where Anne Frank and her family spent their last days before being arrested and sent to concentration camps.

europe trip-Rijksmuseum-amsterdam

Another museum worth a visit is the Rijksmuseum , a spacious building with fascinating architecture and over 8,000 pieces of art, including masterpieces by famous artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer. The vast green spaces at the entrance serve as a cosy place for an afternoon picnic or a spot to stretch and relax after exploring the museum.

Fans of Van Gogh and his artworks should visit the modern Van Gogh Museum featuring the largest collection of paintings by the world-renowned artist. View amazing paintings like The Starry Night and Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers up close and learn unique facts about the life and tribulations faced by one of the most legendary artists in human history.

europe trip-zaanse schans-the netherlands

Windmills are an intrinsic part of Dutch culture every senior should experience first-hand. Book a tour of Zaanse Schans , an open-air park with famous windmills. At Zaanse Schans, you can also shop for souvenirs, witness the clog-making process or head to the cheese farm nearby.

The reality is age doesn’t diminish wanderlust. As the saying goes, you are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream! Keep reading for the complete list of slow-paced tours perfect for seniors.

From captivating cultural encounters to picturesque landscapes that soothe the soul, these trips are thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs and desires of a variety of travelers.

Let’s delve into the transformative power of unhurried travel, where the emphasis lies not on ticking off landmarks on a checklist but on relishing each intricate moment of life. Slow-paced tours can rekindle the sense of wonder, create lasting memories, and open doors to unforeseen adventures for seniors seeking a new chapter in their travel story.

Why Choose a Slow-Paced Tour

While fast-paced travel might suit some, unhurried trips offer a host of unique advantages that make them an increasingly popular choice among those that enjoy stopping and smelling the roses.

Appreciate the Journey

Slow-paced tours encourage you to savor the experience fully. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, you have the time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of each destination. This unhurried approach allows you to develop a deeper connection with the places you visit, fostering a profound sense of appreciation for the voyage itself.

Enjoy Relaxed Itineraries

Slow-paced tours are thoughtfully designed with leisurely itineraries that prioritize comfort and enjoyment over rushed sightseeing. Ample free time allows you to explore destinations at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and even indulge in spontaneous moments of discovery.

Embrace Accessibility and Inclusivity

These tours often consider the accessibility needs of seniors, ensuring that the destinations and activities are senior-friendly. They take into account mobility concerns and offer accommodations that cater to varying physical abilities, making the trip more enjoyable for all participants.

Forge Meaningful Connections

With a more relaxed pace, you have the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers in a more meaningful way. The unhurried environment fosters camaraderie and allows for deeper conversations, creating opportunities for friendships and lasting memories.

Experience Authentic Culture

Slow-paced tours often veer away from the crowded tourist traps, providing a chance to experience the authentic culture of a place. You can indulge in local cuisines, witness traditional customs, and partake in unique activities that might not be possible on fast-paced tours.

Reduce Stress and Fatigue

Traveling at a slower pace can significantly reduce the stress and fatigue commonly associated with rushed trips. This approach is especially beneficial as it allows you to maintain your energy levels and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Immerse in Nature’s Beauty

These tours often include visits to serene natural landscapes, where you can bask in the tranquility of breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, a peaceful coastal town, or a majestic mountain range, slow-paced tours provide ample time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Accommodate Special Interests

Slow-paced tours can be tailored to cater to specific interests, such as art, history, wildlife, or wellness. You can choose tours that align with your passions.

Finding the Right Balance

Margaret Manning, the founder of Sixty & Me and an avid traveler, reflects on the differences between slow-paced and fast-paced traveling.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options.

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Road Scholar is actually an amazing blend of fast and slow-paced travel. On the one hand, all of their programs offer intellectually stimulating activities. They keep your mind buzzing (sometimes spinning) with new ideas.

On the other hand, they don’t force you to go beyond a comfortable pace. If you want to take part in the optional activities, you can. If you want to use your free time to sit at a local café and watch the people passing by, this is also completely fine.

Perhaps this was the main lesson that I learned on my most recent trips.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to travel. There is no “too fast” or “too slow. There is only the pace that we need at a certain time in our lives.

Sometimes we need intensity. Other times, we need intimacy. The trick is to take the time to evaluate where we are in our lives and to choose our travel adventures consciously.

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Sandra Roussy

Hi Gmarie, I’m so sorry Covid put a damper on your trip to Ireland and Scotland. Slow paced tours are definitely an excellent way to discover new places without feeling rushed and pressured. They are great for getting an authentic feel of a destination and especially for getting an immersive experience. Keep us posted on your future travels!

Bringing generations together, one Intrepid traveler at a time

Whether you’re a retiree looking for your next big adventure or just think it’s time to see more of the world now that you’ve been around the block a few times, traveling with us means discovering a destination with expert local leaders who know it best. Join a small group of like-minded people as you check out hidden noodle bars, fascinating galleries, and real-life experiences you won’t find on a search engine. With a range of trip styles (from Premium to Basix) and a balance of social activities and ‘you’ time, our trips are for every curious and adventure-hungry traveler – no seriously, as far as we’re concerned, age is just a number.

Stuffy coaches, flag-touting tour guides and ‘seeing the sights’ isn’t our vibe. We prefer culturally rich experiences – led by a local – that take you behind the scenes of a destination. Our itineraries are packed with unique insights into local life. We're talking hands-on pastry-making classes with local Macedonian women, watching a traditional dance performance on the dunes in Pushkar or sleeping in a lush eco-resort in the Amazon.

We’ve found that it’s not always about the places you go but the people you meet along the way. Our trips are designed for people of all ages and with all sorts of life stories. With an average group size of 10, you'll get to know each other beyond the pleasantries over long dinner conversations and shared experiences. With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase at home.

As exciting as traveling is, it often involves a fair bit of planning. While we're sure you're well equipped to handle any situation, the beauty of traveling with us means we'll do the heavy lifting and take care of the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on what you're here to do: travel! From navigating border crossings to booking bus tickets, bridging language barriers to cultural dos and don'ts, sit back and enjoy yourself while your leader takes care of everything.

We understand that people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a range of  travel themes and styles  to suit every Intrepid traveler. From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), choose what suits you and prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.

Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.

Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures , but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.

Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.

Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.

Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.

Is it okay that I'm travelling alone?

Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average), while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

Joining a tour can take the guesswork out of planning, making adventures safer, more affordable, and fun.

senior trip ideas europe

Whether you’re ready to take the trip of a lifetime after retirement or just want to make new friends on a relaxed walking vacation, there are many reasons to book with a specialist travel company. Senior-friendly travel groups take the time-consuming research and guesswork out of planning, especially if you want to go to multiple destinations or experience a place from a local perspective. Group travel is safer for mature adventurers, and options are often categorized by activity level, so you can be sure you’re not biting off more than you can chew. There are also trips specially designed for singles.

These travel companies offer a range of tours for every budget and mode of transportation, from bikes to cruises. Some are specifically aimed at seniors, while others feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Road Scholar emphasizes the value of "lifelong learning" with affordable, educational journeys.
  • Choose an "easygoing" Dolce Tempo walking tour or a more challenging adventure with Backroads.
  • With expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide, Kensington Tours can craft the perfect itinerary for your group.
  • Senior Cycling offers intermediate and advanced bike tours for active over-50s, which are always accompanied by a "sag wagon."
  • Despite the name, the AARP-approved Grand European Travel extends beyond the continent with a wide range of destinations, budget options, and modes of transportation.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, this nonprofit organization rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of "lifelong learners" who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and immersive educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific subject. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal itinerary.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. Tours typically include participants in a variety of age groups, with an average age of 55. The company offers guided biking, walking, and "multi-adventure" tours to destinations across the globe, including Antarctica. There are women-only trips and options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include an Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides family trips to countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa that come with private vehicles, local guides, and kid-friendly dining options.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling typically limits groups to 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–35 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company is part of The Travel Corporation , which represents more than 40 brands, including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours. Despite the name, offerings extend far beyond the continent and range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. The company also creates itineraries specifically for women over 55 so solo travelers can feel secure in far-flung destinations (or those closer to home).

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from five to eight miles and are described as easy to moderate.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which focus on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for more than five hours.

Firebird Tours

Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the northern lights , as well as theater and opera. Seniors might want to check out a sightseeing highlights tour of Italy , or a two-week rail journey across Scandinavia with guided tours in cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm and an overnight in a scenic Norwegian fjord town.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of its customers travel alone (half are solo women), O.A.T. has created getaways with single travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, holiday markets in Europe , or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Looking for travel groups geared toward singles? The company's solo tours provide private rooms, social events, and personalized experiences like yoga and cooking classes. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made options, from walking tours in U.S. national parks to Galápagos Islands cruises . Seniors might want to check out the Premium or Comfort trips, which offer more upscale accommodations and private transportation. Each trip is given a physical rating between one and five to help you determine its strenuousness, and consultants can help travelers with disabilities choose the perfect itinerary.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations are scattered around the world, with a particularly wide choice in the U.S. and Europe, including a variety of cruise options. The company also arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, typically entails four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

The 10 Best Trips for Seniors and Retirees Who Love to Travel

Getaways for your golden years.

O ne of the wonderful things about hitting retirement age is having the flexibility in your schedule to go out and explore the world. If you're looking for trips for seniors, you're in luck: InsureMyTrip recently released its list of the top 10 cities around the world for senior travel, making it easier than ever for people over age 60 to find the ideal spot for their next vacation. (We think some of them sound like the best places to retire too.)

To determine the top 10 trips for seniors, the folks at InsureMyTrip evaluated a handful of travel considerations for cities around the world. Those included the ease of walking in the city, access to health care, public transportation, the number of tours for seniors and peacefulness. You'll notice that many of the best places to travel in your golden years are also great for traveling on a budget .

And before you ask: Yes, travel is a good idea for anyone who's able, regardless of whether they're age 60, 70 or beyond. In fact, travel helps keep us young. "We know loneliness affects older Americans disproportionately, and the importance of social connections only increases as we age," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar, one of our favorite tour companies . "[Travel provides] enriching, meaningful, stimulating social connections to hundreds of thousands of older adults."

Ready to find out which trips for seniors over 60 made the cut? Read on for the top picks, in order.

1. Istanbul, Turkey

Best for: Activities

Coming in at No. 1 in InsureMyTrip's list of trips for seniors is Istanbul. "Istanbul's recognition as the best destination for senior citizens highlights its cultural richness with highly rated things to do and high-quality health-care services," says Sarah Webber of InsureMyTrip. Cosmopolitan Istanbul is a cultural and ethnic melting pot, a unique city straddling two continents (Europe and Asia), with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Turkish structures—it's a skyline of domes and minarets made up of mosques, churches and synagogues, palaces, castles and towers—and of course, incredible cultural landmarks, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

The Turkish city scored highly across many of the metrics, particularly for its quality of things to do (a rating of 4.63 out of 5), health care and ease of walking.

2. Athens, Greece

Best for: Guided tours

An absolute must-visit highlight of Greece is the city of Athens, which offers a unique mixture of modern buildings and ancient monuments. You'll find bustling cosmopolitan streets lined with shops and international hotels, but turn any corner and the views of the storied Acropolis appear before you. More than 22% of the population is over 65 years old, so it's no wonder the city has a large number of guided tours aimed at senior citizens—an astounding 181, according to InsureMyTrip.

Book a Tour

3. Rome, Italy

Best for: Ancient architecture

It's hard to talk about visiting Italy without starting at this classical city, where contemporary culture stands shoulder to shoulder with ancient architecture. Landmarks of the Eternal City include the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and you can even travel to another country by crossing into Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel. "The inclusion of Rome in the top three destinations for senior citizens is thanks to its number of tours for senior citizens [107] and high-quality things to do, making it a dream city for many elderly travelers," says Webber. "The average age of the population [47 years old] is among the highest in the study, making it ideally suited for older travelers."

4. Bangkok, Thailand

Best for: A great deal

Bangkok is the spot to head to for affordable bucket-list travel . Here, golden temples and palaces line the winding Chao Phraya River, and travelers can take advantage of affordable luxuries such as authentic Thai spas, with prices starting as low as $10 for a two-hour massage, incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a ride on a tuk-tuk costing just $1.50 an hour. Bangkok's quality of things to do (rated 4.51 out of 5)—hello, golden-Buddha-filled temples—and health care (a rating of 77 out of 100) helped secure its spot in the top five trips for seniors.

5. Tallinn, Estonia

Best for: Holiday markets and winter charm

There are definitely some surprises in the survey, says Webber, including multiple spots in Eastern Europe that fill the middle of the list, starting with Tallinn. "Eastern European cities are hidden gems for senior citizens," she says. "[They] are perhaps lesser-known vacation destinations, but this study highlights they have plenty to offer for senior citizens."

Tallinn has been experiencing what InsureMyTrip calls "a boom in tourism," with a 33% increase in foreign tourism this year, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com. The quality of things to do (rated 4.61 out of 5) and health care contribute to its high score. This well-preserved medieval city is beautiful to visit anytime, but it's one of our favorite snow-covered towns to visit in winter, when the lights of the Old Town against the snow create plenty of warmth. Any time of year, stroll the historic district and visit the walled fortifications; then stop into a cafe for a coffee or wine.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Best for: Attractions

Another Eastern European gem, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius offers great value for your money as soon as you step off the plane. Just taking the train from Vilnius Airport to the city's center is only 89 cents. But it's not just bargain-price travel that make this an appealing destination. The survey found that Vilnius had the best-rated attractions, earning it a rating of 4.66 out of 5 for the quality of things to do there. You'll find a mix of museums, gardens and historic sites, including a Baroque-architecture-filled Old Town. And don't miss the 16th-century Gates of Dawn, which contain an icon from the Virgin Mary.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

Best for: Walking

Prague isn't just one of the top trips for seniors; it's also one of our favorite hidden gems in Europe. The perfectly preserved city has bright red trolleys traversing original cobblestone streets hemmed in by charming stone buildings. Around every corner, you'll find a new treat, like the Charles Bridge, which is lined with majestic stone statues, Michelin-starred restaurants and classic pilsner bars. Another highlight: an entire "castle district" centered around majestic Prague Castle. It ranks high on the survey for its walkability and public transportation, making it an easy city to explore without worrying about needing a ride.

8. Riga, Latvia

Best for: Performing arts

Rounding out the list of under-the-radar gems of Eastern Europe is Latvia's coastal capital city of Riga, which sits right on the Baltic Sea. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a maze of medieval streets dotted with Gothic and Baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The lively new town is an expanse of wide boulevards filled with elegant Art Nouveau architecture.

There's no shortage of places to go in Europe , but Riga scored high for the quality of things to do. One example: The Latvian National Opera dates back to 1782 and presents hundreds of opera and ballet performances throughout the year. Hungry? You're in luck. Riga is the home of the largest food hall in Europe, Riga Central Market.

9. Berlin, Germany

Best for: Museums

A dynamic and modern metropolis, Berlin draws travelers from all corners of the globe to experience its modern arts, nightlife and historic cultural sites, including Museum Island (five popular museums on a Spree River island) and the Brandenburg Gate. Reminders of the city's complicated past—including the graffitied remnants of the Berlin Wall—are ever-present and absolutely worth visiting. Want to experience a different side of Berlin? Go gallery hopping, eat street food at Markthalle Neun, wander through the diverse Kreuzberg neighborhood or see a burlesque show. And don't worry about aging out of Berlin; the InsureMyTrip survey found that the city has one of the highest average ages (48) in the world; only Tokyo ranked higher, with an average age of 49.

10. Helsinki, Finland

Best for: Public transportation

The capital of Finland is one of the least polluted capital cities in the world. One reason, according to The Telegraph , is that residents routinely use public transportation and bicycles to get around (the city makes it easy by maintaining roughly 2,400 miles worth of cycle lanes). It's also the most honest city in the world, according to a Reader's Digest study—in our test, 11 out of 12 people returned a lost wallet.

On the survey, Helsinki also scored high for health services, so you won't have to worry no matter what the day holds. You can bike to Esplanade Park to relax at a free outdoor concert, tour Suomenlinna (Fortress of Finland) or visit one of the seaside city's many museums, including the Finnish Museum of Photography, the contemporary art museum or the National Museum of Finland.
