Planning a trip to Madrid? Spain’s capital city is a top destination and has so much to offer.

If you’re staying in Barcelona and want to just make a day trip to Madrid – you can!

Despite the distance between the two cities, a day in Madrid is doable as long as you plan it right.

It can be tricky trying to squeeze everything you want to do into such a short time, but we’ve gathered up all the highlights to give you a starting point for your planning!

We’ll also give you the rundown of the most important part: getting there in the first place. We’ll cover:

  • The transportation options
  • Major attractions
  • What (and where) to eat
  • Shopping and souvenirs
  • Frequently asked questions.

Ready to dive into planning your day in Madrid? Let’s go!

Best Way To Get From Barcelona To Madrid

There are multiple transportation options between these two iconic Spanish cities. What you choose is up to your personal circumstances, because there are distinct pros and cons to each option.

Please keep in mind that the prices are approximate and will vary depending on the provider, dates of travel, and other factors.

Train

You can easily catch a high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid!

Price: Varies a lot, but usually under 100 euro and often as cheap as twenty-five. Make sure to book well in advance to secure the best possible price.

Travel Time: Two and a half to three hours.

  • Cheap: this option can be very low cost, especially if you book an unconventional day or time ( i.e., off-season, not during rush hour, and/or on a weekday).
  • Convenient: The train stations are right in the city centers, meaning you won’t have to travel out of town to catch your train.
  • Flexible Timing: Trains run around every 20 minutes, so you can go when you like!
  • Fast: These high-speed trains are much faster than taking the bus or driving.
  • Unstable pricing: You could be looking at a larger fee if you don’t book well in advance or if you’re trying to travel at a popular time.
  • Non-stop: While this could also be seen as a pro, you won’t get to stop and explore between the two cities.

Trains are one of my favorite ways to travel because you can really soak up the view without having to focus on the road or directions, while still being so much faster than a bus. They’re also the greenest transportation option!

The bus is the cheapest option on the list, and you’ll get great views of the Spanish countryside!

Price: As low as ten euro, but usually around twenty-five.

Travel Time: Seven and a half to eight hours.

  • Low cost: the best choice for a budget.
  • Comfy: The buses generally have ac and reclining seats, as well as luggage storage.
  • Stops: You’ll get to take a break to use the toilet, stretch your legs, and take in the view.
  • Overnight options: You can get an overnight bus, allowing you to sleep on the journey and make the absolute most of your day in Madrid.
  • Slow: Up to eight hours on a bus isn’t for everyone, and you’ll have to adjust your schedule if you want a full day in Madrid.
  • Less flexible: There aren’t as many buses leaving each day as trains, and you can’t choose your departure time like you can if you’re driving
  • Minimal facilities: There are no options for purchasing food and drinks while on the buses, and most do not have onboard toilets. This means they may not be the best option for some.
  • Transfers: While there are direct buses, cheaper options may require you to switch lines.

You can also get bus passes for thirty euro that allow you to make unlimited trips for a month – making this journey even cheaper if you plan on city hopping!

Plane

Price: Usually twenty-five to fifty euro.

Travel Time: an hour and a half.

  • Shockingly cheap: plane tickets are even cheaper than trains sometimes!
  • Super fast: Flying is the fastest option to get from Barcelona to Madrid.
  • Non-stop: You can get direct flights cheaply and easily.
  • Out of the way: You’ll need to arrange travel to and from the airport to get into the city center.
  • Luggage: Many of the cheapest flights do not have overhead lockers, meaning larger bags are not allowed.
  • High emissions : Planes are the least environmentally-friendly travel option.

Flying is the fastest option, and can still be really affordable. You’ll be trading off ground-level views of the countryside for a weather-dependent aerial one though.

Price : Around ninety euro, including thirty-five in tolls. This will vary based on the type of vehicle you take and current gas prices.

Travel Time: Six to seven hours, excluding stops.

  • Most flexible: You’re in control of your own journey and can leave whenever you want.
  • Stops: You can stop as much as you want to take breaks or explore along your way.
  • Comfort: You’ll travel in the privacy of your own vehicle.
  • Price: Driving isn’t the cheapest option, and it will cost even more if you have to rent a car.
  • Time: It’s a long drive, and wouldn’t allow you a full day in Madrid.
  • Stress: While the route is simple and the roads are in good condition, it’s less relaxing than simply sitting back and watching the view pass you by.

While the fastest option is to take the A-2, you can take the A-7 instead and drive closer to the coast – giving you a lot of beautiful seaside towns to stop at as well as going through Valencia.

Things To Do And See In Madrid

Madrid is a large and complex city with a very rich history, so you won’t be able to do everything in a single day. However, you can definitely enjoy some of the highlights!

Parque del Retiro

Parque del Retiro

This sprawling park is a great starting place for your day in Madrid. Stretch your legs after your journey and enjoy the city’s number one attraction! There are many beautiful historical buildings and art surrounding the park’s central lake and throughout.

Museo Nacional del Prado

Museo Nacional del Prado

The Prado Museum is Spain’s national art museum and houses many famous paintings and other works – as well as just being a stunning building!

It’s less than ten minute’s walk from Parque del Retiro, so it’s a great place to visit at the same time (or instead of the park in case of bad weather).

You could easily spend days in the museum, but you should allow for at least an hour to ninety minutes to see the greatest hits.

Standard admission is fifteen euro, but many are eligible for reduced pricing so check their website to see if you’re applicable.

Alternatively, if you stop by towards the end of your day, admission is free from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday to Saturday, or 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sundays and holidays.

Mercado San Miguel

Mercado San Miguel

This historic covered market will give you a (literal) taste of the city!

There are many high-end stalls serving tapas and traditional dishes in the sprawling marketplace, making it a popular lunch pitstop in the heart of Madrid.

It’s a short walk (about twenty minutes) from the Museo Nacional del Prado, which will take you through a gorgeous area of the city including the famous Plaza Mayor.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Royal Palace of Madrid

This decadent and fascinating palace is just five minutes West of the market, and it’s definitely a must-see.

You could spend hours wandering among the gilded rooms and indulging in the sights and history, or even just stop by to admire the view of the building.

General admission is twelve euro, with reduced pricing for seniors, children, and students. Discover the wonders of the Royal Palace of Madrid with our complete guide.

Places to Eat

Madrid is a city known for its incredible food! The city is known for its stews, squid sandwiches (and other seafood), and tapas of course.

It also boasts many excellent restaurants serving dishes from around Spain and internationally.

Places to Eat in Madrid

Stop for a light bite like pastries, tostadas, and coffee at any of the amazing cafes near Retiro or in the middle of the city.

If you’re after a fancier sit-down meal, try JUNGLEKING in Plaza Mayor ! They offer amazing brunch (as well as lunch and dinner), serving everything from crazy loaded pancakes and a range of tapiocas to a carbonara croissant and burgers.

A light lunch from the stalls at Mercado San Miguel gives you the ultimate selection!

You can also check out different markets, like Mercado San Antón , for a more tailored dining experience. There are restaurants specializing in everything from ceviche to wine and puff pastries!

San Antón also may be less crowded and touristy than San Miguel.

For an ultimate dinner in Madrid, it’s got to be Sobrino de Botín . This restaurant is the oldest in the world – founded and operational since 1725, in fact.

Just the dining inside the historic building is enough to merit a visit, but the food is also super authentic and delicious. They specialize in roasted suckling pig, as well as a range of other classic Spanish dishes such as seafood and egg dishes.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Shopping and Souvenirs in Madrid

There are so many fantastic souvenirs to be found in Madrid. Popular options include alpargatas (lightweight shoes), shawls, hats and other clothing, olive oil, wine, pottery, and thimbles.

If you’re coming back with sweets, you’ve got to stop in at La Violeta!

This charming candy shop specializes in violet caramels, Madrid’s most iconic candy, but also has a wide range of handmade chocolates and other treats. Plus, it’s right in the heart of the city between the Prado Museum and Plaza Mayor.

Tips for Planning Your Day Trip to Madrid from Barcelona

  • Don’t overdo it: Madrid’s a massive city, so it’s better to pick a few things and do them well than spend all your time ruching between attractions
  • Stay late : Many of the attractions are cheaper and emptier at night, but the city stays alive and many dining options go well into the night. If you’re not staying overnight, there are still late-running transport options.
  • Book early : Especially for public transport tickets, the earlier you book the cheaper they’ll be!
  • Walk if you can: on foot is the best way to experience the city, and it will probably save you time and money as well. Public transport is readily available if needed.
  • Enjoy drinks and tapa: if you’re going for a wine or beer, you’re typically served a small free plate with it!

Is It Possible To Do A Day Trip From Barcelona To Madrid?

Yes! While a longer trip would be better to fully explore the city, you can do Madrid in a day. It’s a good idea to plan in advance to make the most of your short time.

Is The Train Ride From Barcelona To Madrid Scenic?

The train goes pretty fast, but you’ll still enjoy views of the Spanish countryside and small towns. While the ride is not known for its scenery, it’s still pleasant!

Is It Better To Fly Or Take A Train From Barcelona To Madrid?

Flying is a little faster and sometimes cheaper, but the trains are more flexible with timing, and drop you right in the center of the city. Trains are also better environmentally and will allow you to bring more baggage in some cases.

Is A Day In Madrid Enough?

A day in Madrid is definitely better than not visiting at all; it’s long enough to see some amazing sights and get a taste of the city. However, if you can stay for longer, go for it!

How Long Is The Speed Train From Barcelona To Madrid?

The high-speed train takes around two and a half hours.

Is Madrid Expensive As A Tourist?

Like any major city, Madrid can be pricey – especially if you’re going to high-end dining options and doing a lot of activities. However, it can also be visited cheaply! Take advantage of free museum times (and free attractions like parks), and try dining with small meals or from markets.

Day trip to Madrid from Barcelona?

I'll be spending a month in Barcelona this June. Since I'll have so much time to see the local sights (including Rick's recommended day trips in Catalonia) I was thinking about doing a day trip (or maybe two days) to Madrid just to see more of Spain, since this will be my first time in the country. I already have paid for my apartment for the month in Barcelona through Airbnb so I'm trying to be as economical as possible.

I'm looking at flying because it seems to be cheaper than even the AVE train. I'm seeing tickets on Iberia for $38 each way. They seem to be cheapest late at night, so I could take the last flight (after dinner in Barcelona), spend one or two days in Madrid and then return late at night back to my apartment in Barcelona.

Any thoughts? Other cities in Spain that could be visited rather economically from my home base in Barcelona? I don't want to break the bank but if it doesn't cost that much I'd be open to seeing more of Spain.

Thanks for your comments!!

'I'm seeing tickets on Iberia for $38 each way' - Plus costs and time expended to and from and in those airports, when the train journey is centre to centre. (I am not advocating either way.)

Zaragoza, an hour and a half probably, by train. Why not just take the map and google, not neglecting looking at the images? Whether a journey would break your bank I would not know.

Day tripping to Madrid is kind of far. It normally take about 2.75 - 3 hours one way and costs roughly $160pp one way. If you were going to do Madrid, try to spend at least a night there to make it worth while. Any longer than 3 hours one way is too far for a day trip. Other good options for places closer to Barcelona would be Zaragoza, Girona, Figueres, and Montserrat. Flights can definitely be cheaper, but when the train takes as long as a flight does (consider trans to and from the airport and waiting time), it makes more sense to do the train as it goes from city center to city center.

I hope this helps some.

Tarragona perhaps? Short train ride south of Barcelona. http://www.spain.info/en/que-quieres/ciudades-pueblos/otros-destinos/tarragona.html

To get a taste of Madrid I would recommend an overnight at least. The following AVE trains would give you 32 hours on the ground in Madrid.

07:05 DEP BARCELONA SANTS 09:50 ARR MADRID ATOCHA 2h 45m Direct

18:00 DEP MADRID ATOCHA 20:30 ARR BARCELONA SANTS 2h 30m Direct

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up booking a round-trip ticket on Iberia airlines, which was only $78 total. I know I'll have to pay more to get to and from the airports, but that's not anywhere near the amount it costs to take the train roundtrip. I also ended up booking one of RS' recommended hotels in downtown Madrid for two nights. I believe it was only $29/night. So, even though I have to go through the hassle of airports instead of the convenience of trains, I think it'll be worth it to be there for almost three full days.

You can get deeply discounted train tickets if you buy them early (too bad you have already booked flights). Last year I got AVE tickets from Barcelona to Madrid for 39 euros by buying them about 40 days out. A taxi into town from Madrid airport will cost you about 30 euros, the Aero City Van is 20 euros. There is also an express bus that costs 5.50 euros but stops only two places once leaving the airport - Cibeles and Atocha train station.

Thanks for for this this information. As I myself will be going to Spain in October. I still can't seem to find a good price does the train to a and FROM Madrid from Bcn. Any thoughts on the best way to get to Venice as I am also planning to visit Venice for this trip. To cover Madrid Barcelona, Venice. Florence on on such a abort time lol.

Any thoughts will be appreciated

Yes, Madrid is worth a day trip. The high speed train from Barcelona arrives at Atocha station and the only sight worth seeing, El Prado, is a short walk, a couple of blocks, from there.

I'm being somewhat facetious. I'd rather spend a weekend in Toledo (with a day stop at El Prado).

Girona, mentioned by Abe, is just an hour away by train, and is well worth the visit, with evocative narrow stair passageways within the upper old town, and a great lower town, too.

With a nod to Brad, Madrid has at least 2 or 3 other things worth visiting ;-), plus great day trips of its own. If you can make it back to Spain, you could devote a proper amount of time to Madrid and the surrounding area, and/or Andalusia in southern Spain.

Before I arrived on this tour I thought my highlights would be Barcelona and San Sebastian but honestly, I enjoyed every moment of the holiday! The food and drink in this region is excellent and relatively cheap compared to the UK. You don't spend much time on the tour at the start in Barcelona or at the end in Madrid so I would recommend booking at least an extra night pre/post tour to be able to both great cities. Pamplona has a nice historical old town with some nice walks. San Sebastian is just the place to go to for foodies but is also a nice place in its own right! Logrono is the capital of the La Rioja region so you know you'll get to taste some good wine. I will definitely be coming back to this region! For the tour overall, I felt that we didn't really need 2 nights in Logrono and could have done with either an extra night in San Sebastian to visit Bilbao or a night in Bilbao itself. And that's taking into account the included evening tour of Logrono and the winery tour activities. Beware the 4hr + coach journey from Logrono to Madrid. Our tour leader, Maria Christina did a great job considering that she had to take over at short notice. She organised all our public transport and organised the optional meals, selecting some very decent restaurants. I definitely think she made the trip more enjoyable! I had great fun on this trip and hopefully have made some good friends for life!

From the first day of our trip, we were welcomed by our Travel Director, Maria who made the entire experience amazing. Her knowledge of the destination and of course the local experts who shared with us, the ins and outs of the beautiful sites and cultural attractions, is something we will always remember The itinerary was beautiful and the everyone had a great time. Meals and accommodation were excellent.

Great trip! I enjoyed it. It would have been great if we had stayed a few hours more in Vigo and Salamanca. Other than that, it met my expectations.

Andalusia and Morocco from Barcelona

Everything was pretty good, the guides were great. My only major problem was that they changed our final day in Madrid to a final day in Toledo. I was really looking forward to Madrid as part of the trip, as advertised. The reason it was moved to Toledo was because of a prescheduled doctor's convention. I guess the hotels in Madrid were taken. This information was known to the public prior to me booking the trip. A better run company would known that the conference was taking place before advertising that Madrid was a final destination.

We took an 16-day tour with this firm, and everything exceeded our expectations. The sights we saw were breathtaking, and our tour guides were outstanding. We went on an English/Spanish tour, and the majority of our group was from South America and spoke Spanish. The extra package that includes lunch and select entertainment is highly recommended. Thank you very much for this opportunity!

What people love about barcelona to madrid tours.

I really loved our tour guide Ana Rita Lima. She helped us through a couple rough patches and I appreciate that. Very energetic and delightful!! I loved every bit of the tour except the hotel quality on the first night of the tour. It needed a vending machine that worked and more opportunity to get snacks upon arrival. It was just very basic. Also the hotel in ( I can't remember which city) we didn't have air conditioning. Our tour guide told us of where to be cautious (pick pockets) and some things we should be aware of. I appreciate that they stopped regularly for food and bathrooms breaks. Our driver, Rui, ( proved to have great skill, navigating in traffic, fog, rain and parking!! Overall, a great tour, with important history and valuable information!! With the exception of two poor quality hotels it was a memory that will last a life time. By the way, the Best Western in Barcelona is much better than the one we stayed in on the tour.
Road Trip from Barcelona to Madrid

This colourful road trip takes you on a journey through the cultural melting pot of Spain, from mediaeval fortresses and modern port cities to golden Mediterranean sands. You'll travel from the creative hub of Barcelona in the east to the vibrant inland capital of the country, Madrid.

The 650 km road trip from Barcelona to Madrid takes 7 hours to drive. On the way you'll pass through Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat, Zaragoza and Sigüenza, or take the coastal route to visit Valencia, Torre de Cañavate and Tarancón.

If you're after a blend of ancient and modern, mountains and beaches, then this is the road trip for you. Keep reading to discover the best travel routes, where to stay and what to see along the way.

How far is Madrid from Barcelona, and how long will the road trip take?

The Zaragoza Route is the most direct way to travel from Barcelona to Madrid, at a distance of 650 km. This route takes 7 hours to drive, not accounting for any stops or detours. You'll drive primarily along one of Europe's major West-East highways, so you can expect a smooth journey.

The Valencia Route is slightly longer at 730 km, which takes 8 hours to cover. This itinerary takes a more scenic route along the coast, with several opportunities to detour to explore the nearby mountains and areas of natural beauty.

Whichever route you choose, we'd recommend allowing anywhere from one to three days for the trip, to give yourself a chance to explore some of the stunning architecture, beaches and local culture to be found on the way.

Best road trip route from Barcelona to Madrid

Whether you dream of historic towns and cities or ports and beaches, this Spanish adventure has it all. Which route is the best for your will depend entirely upon what landmarks and attractions you'd like to see.

The Zaragoza Route takes you past Roman and mediaeval towns and cities, including folkloric Zaragoza and Siguenza, showcasing beautiful castles, towers, and fortresses.

Explore the ancient buildings or head out into the surrounding nature with limestone rock formations, trails and waterfalls. While this route doesn't wind around the coast, you'll get to hike or cycle around the unforgettable rocky landscapes of the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat.

The Valencia Route shows off some of the Mediterranean's best beaches, with the chance to explore the buzzing port city of Valencia with its mix of ancient and modern architecture.

It's not short on natural beauty either - you'll get to take in the diverse scenery of River Ebro Delta and the mountains of Serra d'Espadà.

The Zaragoza Route

Head out of Barcelona on A-2, which takes you inland past the Cascada de Molins de Rei nature reserve. Follow this road to Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat, home to 212 peaks and with plenty of hiking trails to explore.

Continue on A-2, then take C-12 to head towards Lleida. The capital of the province, it has incredible mediaeval architecture, including the Knights Templar Castle of Gardeny.

Take AP-2 heading west out of Lleida, then take the exit for Zaragoza. The Mudéjar architecture of Aragon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it's well worth taking a walking tour around the landmark buildings in the city centre.

Get back on A-2 to cross into the province of Castile-la Mancha and pass through Alcolea del Pinar. This town is home to some interesting stone architecture, notably La casa de Piedra.

Continue on A-2 to and take the exit for CM-110 to reach Sigüenza. The Barranco del Río Dulce National Park just south of the city has stunning limestone rock formations and castles.

Take CM-1101 out of Sigüenza, then get on E-90. Take a mini detour to Guadalajara to check out the majestic Infantado Palace and the Pantheon of the Duchess of Sevillano. Continue on A-2 to arrive in Madrid.

The Valencia Route

Take B-20 out of Barcelona, then get on C-32 to follow the coastline along the outskirts of the 12,000-hectare Parc del Garraf.

Join AP-7 and take the exit to reach Tarragona. Check out the Roman ruins that are remarkably well-preserved in this port city, including the Amfiteatre Romà and the Necropolis.

Follow T-11 out of Tarragona up to Reus, the birthplace of Gaudí. Get back on A-7 and continue down the coast until you reach Parc Natural del Delta de l'Ebre.

Continue on E-15, passing by the Gothic Concatedral de Santa Maria in Castellón de la Plana. Take V-21 to arrive in Valencia. The city has a great cultural offering, but you can also head to the beaches in Albufera Park.

Follow A-3 out of Valencia, then follow CM-220 to reach Torre de Cañavate. Follow A-3 up to Tarancón, where you can check out castle ruins in the ancient Castillejo neighbourhood. Continue on A-3 all the way to Madrid.

Best places to stop between Barcelona and Madrid

Both route options offer up a generous serving of dramatic natural landscapes, unique architecture and a chance to immerse yourself in local traditions.

We've selected some of our favourite spots with plenty to explore during an overnight stay, with local recommendations for what to see and do.

Marvel at traditional architecture in Zaragoza

The city of Zaragoza is a great stop-off about halfway along the Zaragoza Route, located in a beautiful spot by the River Ebro and its tributaries Huerva and Gállego. It is a fascinating place to explore, full of interesting architectural sites dating back to Roman times.

Zaragoza is known for its historical buildings and landmarks including the remarkable Basílica del Pilar, where in the first century, the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared atop a pillar.

There are plenty of galleries which offer an artistic slice of the region, including the Museum of Fine Arts Zaragoza and Museo Goya, showcasing works by famous European artists from the last centuries.

Walk along the River Ebro in the city centre and take in a view of the landmarks, bridges, and buildings in the traditional architectural style of the city, Mudéjar architecture of Aragon.

Get a taste of Spanish culture in Valencia

Valencia is the perfect place to stop halfway along the Valencia Route. This important port city is one of the major urban areas on the European side of the Mediterranean and is home to a historic centre as well as interesting modern architecture.

The City of Arts and Sciences stands out for its distinctive modern look, making it a must-see architectural and cultural landmark. Inside you can visit the garden walkway, stop by the science museum or catch a show at the Imax cinema.

For an insight into old Valencia, it's worth stopping by Lonja de la Seda, a gothic style building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the mediaeval Torres dels Serrans in the ancient city centre, along with Valencia Cathedral.

To get a more general feel for the city, take a walk on the Passeig Marítim, a promenade lined with palm trees on the north side of the port.

For a picturesque stay, try the Palacio Vallier 5* . A historical building itself, the hotel offers beautiful, spacious and immaculately kept rooms right in the heart of Valencia's old city.

Best time to go on a road trip from Barcelona to Madrid

The whole of this part of Spain has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool winter months. Closer to the sea, winters are milder due to the sea's influence, and inland towards Madrid, winters are somewhat colder with occasional frosts and snowfall.

You can absolutely visit the area any time of the year, whether you prefer to avoid the biggest tourist crowds in the middle of summer, or in fact make the most of the summer months to enjoy the seaside and nature activities on offer.

In the summer, temperatures can rise up to 40 degrees Celsius in the Madrid region. The beach will be beautiful if driving along the Valencia Route, but be aware that bigger cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid especially get rather crowded with visitors in the summer months from June to August.

Cullera Playa los Olivos beach in Mediterranean Valencia at Spain

Winters in Madrid are much cooler, with temperatures sometimes dropping to -10 degrees Celsius. Many hotels reduce their rates in the winter months, which could make this an appealing time to visit.

Autumn, from September to November, or spring, from March to May, are some of the best times to visit Madrid if you want to enjoy comfortable temperatures and avoid the biggest crowds of midsummer.

Madrid plays host to incredible events year-round. Virgen de La Paloma is a festival that combines entertainment and fun with religious activities in August, while Festival Noche en Blanco celebrates cinema, art, theatre, and crafts in September.

The Carnaval Parade with fabulous costumes takes place in February, while Madrid Gastrofestival in May celebrates the region's food and culture.
