Namaste! Welcome to India. When you arrive at Delhi Airport, you’ll be collected and transferred to your hotel. Your adventure then begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm to meet your local leader and fellow travellers. Until then, you can explore this exciting capital city. Filled with historical landmarks, museums, galleries and endless bazaars, there’s plenty to keep you entertained in Delhi. After your meeting, head out for dinner at one of Delhi’s oldest restaurants. Having opened its doors more than 80 years ago, the iconic restaurant is credited with introducing India to ice cream and fine dining.

  • The Grand Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Delhi - Welcome dinner

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

To get your bearings in Old Delhi, start the day with a leader-led tour of the most ancient part of the city. Your leader will help you navigate the metro system so you can then explore the impressive Mughal architecture on foot. It’s not Delhi without a traffic jam, so hop aboard a traditional rickshaw and weave your way around the streets surrounding the Chandi Chowk marketplace. Stop by India’s oldest and largest mosque, the Jama Masjid, before heading into the Sikh temple of Sheeshganj Gurudwara to observe the capital’s spiritual side. You have a free evening ahead to relax and recharge. Tap into your leader’s local expertise for food and activity recommendations that match your mood.

  • Old Delhi City Tour
  • Delhi - Sheeshganj Gurudwara (Sikh Temple)
  • Delhi - Jama Masjid (Shoe Keeper)
  • Delhi - Visit to the Jama Masjid Mosque

Today’s total driving time is approximately 4 hours.

It’s time to head south to Agra. After a scenic four-hour drive, settle into your new hotel before visiting India’s most iconic landmark – the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A tribute to his belated wife, Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this famous monument in 1632 to house her remains. Intrigued? Your Taj Mahal guide will illuminate its fascinating history as you stroll the grounds at sunset. You’re likely familiar with North Indian cuisine (butter chicken anyone?), and tonight, your local expert will take you to unknown places on a street food tour. Stop by a 19th-century shop serving up age-old recipes from the Braj region of India for dinner tonight, where you’ll visit hyperlocal eateries that most tourists never get to see.

  • Grand Mercure Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Agra - Taj Mahal
  • Agra - Expert-led street food tour (as dinner)

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Start the day with a visit to Agra Fort – widely considered one of the finest-looking forts in India. Learn how Akbar built a fortress and prison out of red sandstone in 1565, and then Shah Jahan converted and added to the fort to transform it into a palace. After, you’ll journey to Jaipur – the capital of Rajasthan – for your Feature Stay at the Hotel Narain Niwas Palace. This heritage hotel, managed by the same family since its opening in 1928, exudes the charm of a traditional family home while showcasing opulent touches at every turn – think chandeliers, stained glass windows and peacocks roaming the grounds. Later, join your leader on a walking tour through the crowded streets and wander bazaars filled with handcrafted textiles, folk art and the local specialty of semi-precious stones. Conclude the evening with a home-cooked dinner in the home of a local family and make the most of your time with your hosts, learning about their way of life.

  • Hotel Narain Niwas Palace (Feature Stay) or similar (1 night)
  • Agra - Agra Fort Visit
  • Jaipur - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Jaipur - Home-cooked dinner

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Another day, another fort – but this time it’s Amber Fort, the crown jewel of Jaipur. Your leader will share the stories of a fallen empire as you explore ornate rooms, murals, frescoed arches and delicate jali work. Head to the striking City Palace – a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Tour the grounds and learn about its construction by the founder of Jaipur. Later in the afternoon, hop on a rickshaw and travel to a royal haveli. Havelis are royal mansions that were ornately decorated as a display of wealth, many of which exist across the city today. You’ll meet the owner of a haveli for a tour of the property as he shares photos and stories of his ancestors who once ruled the nearby provinces.

  • Jaipur - Amber Fort
  • Jaipur - City Palace
  • Jaipur - Private Royal Haveli visit with owner
  • Jaipur - Balloon Safari - USD280
  • Jaipur - Jantar Mantar Observatory - INR200

Enjoy a leisurely morning before flying east to Lucknow – the capital of India’s largest region, Uttar Pradesh. When you arrive, your leader will guide the group on an afternoon orientation walk to help you get acquainted with your new surroundings. This evening, join your group for dinner at a very special establishment – a restaurant that supports and empowers acid attack survivors. These courageous women, once too scared to leave their homes due to the physical and emotional scars of their attacks, have found refuge and a source of income through their work at the cafe.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Lucknow - Orientation Walk
  • Lucknow - Sheroes Dinner

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

Seize the day with a morning tour of Lucknow, where your leader will show you some of the city’s best spots. This might include a stop at the intricate Bara Imambara – a hall built in 1784 for Shia Muslims. Its labyrinthine layout of narrow passages and staircases is best navigated with the help of a knowledgeable local. If you were impressed by Lucknow’s cuisine last night, you’ll be delighted with this afternoon’s cooking class. Discover the culinary secrets of Lucknowites, gaining skills that you can hopefully put to good use at home! For dinner, maybe try to find somewhere serving Tunday Kebabi (a Lucknow delicacy that allegedly contains 160 spices).

  • Lucknow City Tour
  • Lucknow – Awadhi Cooking Class

It’s an early start today, but for good reason – no trip to India is complete without a scenic train ride. The journey to Varanasi offers a unique glimpse into the heart of the countryside, all from the comfort of your seat. When you’ve checked into your hotel, join the group for a walking tour of the city widely regarded as India’s spiritual capital. In the evening, set sail on a sunset cruise on the Ganges. You’ll be joined by local musicians on board, who will play as you watch the flower and candle ceremony – an experience that will surely be etched in your memory long after your time in India is over.

  • Ramada Katesar or similar (1 night)
  • Orientation Walk in Varanasi
  • Varanasi - Evening Ganga aarti with musicians on boat
  • Varanasi - Ganges candle flower ceremony

Early risers, this one’s for you – embark on a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, where your leader will explain the significance of India’s most sacred river while gliding past the many ghats and temples on its banks. After, decide your own schedule before coming together again at Sarnath – one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage destinations. The site is where Buddha preached his message of the path to enlightenment and features several stupas and museums to explore.

  • Varanasi - Sunrise Ganges boat trip
  • Sarnath Museum Visit
  • Sarnath Stupa Visit

It’s the penultimate day today and time to return to Delhi. When you land, the afternoon is yours to explore at your leisure. There are plenty of sites you may have missed the first time around, like Humayun’s Tomb – a garden tomb dating back to 1570 – or Qutb Minar, the highest tower in India. Your leader can help you book any activities you wish to do before your final dinner as a group. You’ll head to a beautiful haveli dating back to 1887. Tuck into a feast of Mughlai cuisine, street food dishes and kebabs in a historical setting – the perfect finale to your Indian adventure.

Here are 20 Jobs that PAY YOU to Travel the World

jobs that pay you to travel

Table of Contents

1) Trip Leader/Tour Director

Energy, patience, and great organisational skills are some personal attributes you’ll need for this job. A trip leader or tour director accompanies a tour group for the entire itinerary. It’s your job to make the trip run as smoothly as possible and ensure that everyone is having a good time.

Some daily tasks include arranging bookings, leading walking tours in cities, answering passenger questions (often the same one many times each day), speaking about the history, and communicating with other crew members or the coach driver. When things don’t go to plan on the trip, it’s also your job to try and fix it.

This is a job that requires a lot of hard work, especially in the beginning or at least until you are used to the destination that you’re working in. Once you’ve got the hang of it, it gets much easier and more enjoyable. Generally, you’ll be working in one continent for a season (for example, Europe or South America), depending on the company you work for.

If you possess the above qualities and you think a life on the road might be for you, there are hundreds of tour companies always looking for new Trip Leaders and Tour Directors.

Did you know that Marty and I used to work as Trip Leaders in both Europe and Australia? It was seriously the best job we’ve ever had.

2) Tour Guide

This one is a little different to trip leaders and tour directors, as a tour guide will usually do shorter tours or commonly day tours. This may be a full day or half-day tour and often the guide is an expert in what he/she does.

It could be a full-day tour of a city talking about the history or it might be a half-day food adventure in Bangkok . I’ve listed our favourite companies below – check their websites for available positions.

  • Get Your Guide

Want to earn money by hosting food tours, cooking classes, or creating dining experiences?

Eat With is a platform to share your passion for food with people from all over the world? You just need to sign up as an Eatwith host and earn money from working from any destination around the world.

Viator is one of our favourite sites for booking food tours, day tours, and attraction tickets. It’s so easy to just browse the tours on Viator , pay online, and immediately receive your tour voucher.

4) On-Road Chef

I worked as an On-Road-Chef for Topdeck Travel for many years in Europe. It was honestly the best decision I ever made in my life! It allowed me to travel all over Europe and cook for groups of up to 46 passengers at a time. In between the cooking, I got to see the most incredible parts of such a beautiful continent.

I’ve made some amazing friends with passengers and crew and the best part was that I was getting paid to do so!

This job was seasonal work, so once the Summer season in Europe finished, I’d travel the world for the other six months of the year.

Check out the Topdeck Travel website .

5) Site Representative

A Site Representative is another option for seasonal work. You would be based in one location for a few weeks or months at a time. You might be helping out in the kitchen preparing food for tour groups passing through, perhaps working in the bar on-site or maybe cleaning rooms.

It’s common to be stationed in a gorgeous location somewhere in the world too. Another bonus is that these random jobs can often include free accommodation.

This job is seasonal, so you could work the Summer season in Europe and then work in a ski chalet or village in the Wintertime. Either way, you’ll have plenty of activities to entertain you when you’re not working.

Check out www.seasonalworke rs.com for real-time vacancies for Summer and Winter jobs worldwide .

Some companies I’d recommend contacting directly for these jobs are below.

  • Adventure Tours Australia

6) Nanny/maintenance worker/ ski chalet host for a European Winter

Interested in working in a beautiful ski resort in France or Austria for the Winter and getting paid for it?

VIP Ski  is a good website for available jobs to be a nanny, (looking after children) a chalet host, or a maintenance worker. These jobs are suited to enthusiastic and dedicated individuals, with a good sense of humour and a hard-working attitude.

Whether you’re passionate about food, qualified in childcare, or want to put your handy fix-it skills to good use, this might just be the opportunity for you.

7) Tour Coach Driver/Overland Driver Mechanic

Love to drive? You could be in charge of the wheel, driving through some of the most amazing parts of the world, and getting paid to do it. This job is much easier if you’re already licensed to drive heavy vehicles or trucks.

Depending on what part of the world appeals to you to work in, this job can pay some very good money. There are a few options below for companies that are always looking for good drivers with positive attitudes and personalities.

These companies are often hiring reservation agents in major cities around the world.

  • On the Go Tours

9) Bartending Jobs

Bars, restaurants, and clubs are located worldwide and these are some of the easiest jobs to score. If you can pour a beer and wait tables, you can start earning money quickly abroad. My tip is to work in tourist towns or cities during the peak season of whichever country that you’re visiting.

The best way to find this type of work is to wear something smart, then walk around to bars and restaurants and just ask if they have any positions available.

TIP: Apply for work at hostels – You can often pick up bar work in hostels. A bonus to this is that the job will often include staff accommodation. This is a real win, as paying for accommodation is one of the biggest expenses when travelling or living abroad.

Alternatively, read our post about  How to Become a House Sitter and Travel the World for Free!

These sites advertise jobs for qualified travellers and also for other work on farms, in hostels, or just about anywhere else. You can pick up work that includes your accommodation and food too.

Travelling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Card . We love this card; it has saved us so much in fees.

11) Seasonal Work/Winter Jobs

Keen snowboarder or love to ski? Want to score a free lift pass for a season to some of the best mountains and powder around the world? These jobs are great, they’re seasonal and they provide some great perks.

Sure, you probably won’t be paid very much, but you’ll have an amazing time; isn’t that what really counts?

Winter jobs are available everywhere – but Canada is where I worked and had a blast. Some of the most popular jobs to apply for are Ski Lift Operator, Ski Instructor, Ski Shop Clerk, Chalet Chef, Ticket office, and so on.

Hostels frequently hire travellers to do random jobs on a short-term basis in exchange for free accommodation and sometimes some meals too. Easy jobs that don’t require any skills are common. Jobs like working in the hostel laundry, housekeeping, or washing dishes in the hostel restaurant.

You would typically work for around 3-4 hours each day. The hours are often negotiable so you might do your job at a time you choose and still manage to fit your full-time job in too.

A great way to avoid paying for board and you’ll be able to travel more with all that extra cash you’re saving!

Check out these websites for more information; Worldpackers and Hostel Travel Jobs,

Ok, this one isn’t a job – but it’s a brilliant way to travel around the world and avoid paying for accommodation. This means more savings in the bank for you to continue travelling in between house-sits.

Essentially, you would house-sit for a pre-arranged amount of time, and in return are provided with a whole house, villa, apartment, or another type of residence.

House sitting gigs are fantastic! In addition to receiving free accommodation with a real kitchen, laundry facilities, and often free wifi, you can really immerse yourself in the culture of the country you’re house-sitting in.

This is one of those jobs that allows you to travel from country to country whilst earning enough money to see the best parts of the destination you’re teaching yourself. If you want even more flexibility, you can teach English online. So many options are available with this job.

Being a native English speaker will give you an advantage in scoring a teaching job, but non-native speakers can also get work teaching English.  The best advice I can give you is to take an online TEFL course first.

Great ideas! My only question is, how do you go about saving for a pension when working abroad and moving from place to place? I’m young and live in a country where the government does give pensioners money, but it’s not enough to live comfortably, so it’s important to contribute to a pension of some sort throughout your working life. Also, the government only gives money if you have been making national insurance contributions (by working) for quite a few years, so if you’re working abroad for a long time you may not be entitled to it. I know each country has a different system but I was just wondering what you guys (and others who travel for a living) do about saving for when you’re older?

topdeck travel india

We live and work in Australia when we’re not travelling the world, so we do contribute to our superannuation fund (money which we can access when we’re older). When we travel and work random jobs all over the world, we try to just put money aside in a separate account for our future. The rest is spent on travel and living our best lives while we’re here.

Editoral Review of Topdeck

Founded in 1973, Topdeck has been providing fun, adventurous trips around the world for 18-39 for over 40 years.

What Makes Topdeck Travel Stand Out?

Topdeck tour focuses on providing friendly and authentic guided group tours where like-minded 18-39 year old travelers can have amazing group experiences. There are several trip types to choose from, from camping, to immersive, to multi destination, to sailing.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Topdeck?

Sociable, adventurous, budget conscious 18-39 year olds are the kinds of traveler who will gravitate to Topdeck. Though they offer a few different distinct travel styles, there is definitely a sense of an ongoing party, with travel as the conduit and underlying shared interest.

If the idea of being around a group of similarly aged people - many of whom may be exploring internationally for the first or second time - being spontaneous, and meeting locals (often in the environment of bars or clubs) is unappealing, then Topdeck may not be your cup of tea.

Introverted travelers, or those for whom an extensively planned itinerary including many museums and historical sites is ideal, may want to hunt around before choosing a Topdeck tour.

That is not to dissuade the more observational traveler - who may very well find a group they gel with perfectly on a Topdeck tour. Only to caution that you will be surrounded by several extroverted personalities.

The bottom line is if you are game for anything, are traveling on a budget, and don’t mind fairly basic but comfortable accommodations and inexpensive meals - sometimes on the go - then you will enjoy the Topdeck tour experience.

Top Destinations

Topdeck has tours throughout the world, in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Topdeck Travel Style

The Topdeck travel style is tied quite specifically to their audience. These tours are great for youthful and energetic 18-39 year olds looking for a good time and to make new friends.

In the interest of keeping their tours affordable, travelers with Topdeck will need to make a few allowances. For example, hostels and hotels may be situated quite far away from the city centers. You can also expect some long travel days. The more of a good sense of humor and adventure you have, the more you’ll enjoy the experience.

Why Choose a Tour With Topdeck

Feeling the urge to connect with travelers in your age group, have fun, and make lasting friendships? Topdeck has over 40 years of experience in adventure travel, which has helped them create epic low cost trips for 18-30 somethings.

These tours are certainly not for those who prefer to take things slow. You will be running around, moving between a lot of places - which in some cases means very long bus rides - going out a lot, meeting new people, and staying active throughout your tour.

If your ideal travel experience is more methodical and planned out in nature, Topdeck may not be for you.

But if you are an adventurous and social travelers eager to absorb a new culture and make new friends, then hop on board!

Do I need Travel Insurance?

TopDeck recommend getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy which covers you for all medical expenses (including repatriation) and any expensive items you bring away with you such as laptops, tablets, smart phones and cameras. Check the policy wording and excess limits before you book and make sure they are to your satisfaction. Travel insurance should be taken out at the time of booking in case of unforeseen events which may lead you to cancel your trip.

For more information, please visit the Travel Insurance page of this website, where you can find more tips about what to look for in a policy and search for a policy from World Nomads.

The Topdeck Story.

Ever been held up in traffic or crushed up against some random on a bus and let your mind wander to the ‘what if’? What if I was in Europe right now? What if I sold everything and just took off? What if I had the freedom to travel where I wanted, when I wanted? Where would I go?

Trust us, you’re not alone. At one point or another, we’ve all been there. And none more so than Topdeck’s founding-father Graham ‘Skroo’ Turner – the only difference is, he actually did it and built a pretty successful business from the ‘what ifs’ (if we do say so ourselves).

topdeck travel india

Where it all started…

Like so many young Aussies before him – and the hordes that would follow – a 23-year-old Skroo landed in London in the early 70’s to start his working holiday having recently graduated as a vet.

To his new mates, the blonde-haired, scruffy-bearded Queenslander was a hard-drinking, indiscreet, swearing mans’ man who had a passion for travel. And in 1973 he joined the annual migration over to Munich for – yep, you guessed it – Oktoberfest.

topdeck travel india

Like most bloody brilliant ideas, the concept we now (lovingly) know as Topdeck was born while Skroo and his mates consumed vast quantities of Bavarian beer and took part in the crazy antics that usually go along with this infamous event. Let’s be honest, not much has changed. As the empty glasses piled up on wooden tables, Skroo and his mates reminisced about a crappily run Scandinavian camping tour they’d been on earlier in the year. True to form, the young men agreed that they could have run the thing much better.

topdeck travel india

The top-deck in  Topdeck …

Back in England, Skroo stumbled upon an old WWII airfield whilst on a work call-out. The deserted airfield in the middle of the English countryside was filled with double decker buses. One, had even been kitted out as a mobile home, with bunk beds and a kitchen downstairs – it was fate.

topdeck travel india

After many more beers in the pub and several days’ discussion with his mate Geoff ‘Spy’ Lomas, the two men decided to buy the run-down converted bus and start their own tours through Europe. Little did they know, this moment was the beginning of a $$$ business that would see success beyond their wildest dreams.

topdeck travel india

Out the front of their London apartment, they spent weeks modifying the bus to take extra passengers. Much to the annoyance of their English neighbours – especially when the pavement collapsed under the weight of the bus. They advertised a six-week tour of Spain, Portugal and Morocco at £110 pp and sold tickets to like-minded travelers in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

topdeck travel india

Finally, on 19 November 1973 the first Topdeck tour departed. 14 passengers. A driver with no license. No spare tyres or maps. And absolutely no worries. It was the 70’s after all. But despite some treacherous black ice in the Atlas Mountains, a side of police-bribery, a bout of food poisoning and some accidental drug purchasing, the group made it back to London in one piece a month and a half later.

topdeck travel india

From then on…

By 1975, Topdeck had made £15,000 profit and was running life-changing trips throughout Europe – including shorter trips to Oktoberfest, Pamplona and Hogmanay. But Skroo was ready for something bigger. And in October 1975, he and 16 (brave) passengers set off on the first ever ‘overland’ trip from London to Kathmandu.

topdeck travel india

To say this trip was BIG would be an understatement. The group travelled over 9,500km through Europe to Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Think: driving from Sydney to Perth and back again…but more. And it wasn’t without a few hiccups. Like the time the group underwent ten hours of not-so-civil questioning at the Syrian border after being in Israel (illegal at the time). Or when they nearly hit a bullock cart head-on driving into Delhi.

topdeck travel india

But! The group eventually made it to Kathmandu – with some passengers continuing on home to Sydney and others returning to London in their trusty double decker, just four days before the bus was due to set off on the next trip.

topdeck travel india

As time went on, Topdeck evolved into a professional travel organisation – getting rid of the ‘I like it better on top’ marketing stickers and tightening up operations on the road. And by the late 80’s, Topdeck was one of four remaining tour operators in Europe.

topdeck travel india

And today?

Topdeck’s inventiveness and free-living mentality in the early days paved the way for the incredible business we now know. While the double decker buses have been replaced by modern air-conditioned coaches and our trips now span the globe, the passion for free-spirited travel and inspiring people with seriously incredible trips remains part of our DNA.

topdeck travel india

More than 40 years on, and we’re still your exit from the daily grind into life-changing experiences. Your ticket to discovering more destinations. A chance to uncover extraordinary with a bunch of curious, like-minded people – with the freedom to delve deeper and just be you.

So, are you ready to get out of here and uncover what a  Topdeck trip is all about?
