High quality dog guard

Travall is the world's leading producer of vehicle-specific Dog Guards. With our combination of technical innovation and manufacturing expertise, we've created a quality product that's easy to install and built to last. If you have a pet, creating a safe space for them in the rear of your vehicle leaves you free to concentrate on the road ahead. And just think, no more muddy footprints on your nice clean upholstery

Even if you don't own a pet, a Travall Dog Guard can help maximise load space and, even more importantly, play a vital role in road safety; protecting you and your passengers from the harm that unsecured cargo can cause in the event of a collision - especially when you consider the fact that hundreds of people each year are seriously injured by the things we all carry in our cars on a regular basis.

Vehicle specific dog guard

Now, there are lots of dog guards on the market, including very many of the cheaper 'one size fits all' type of cargo barrier. However, if you're looking for the best fit possible, and something that's going to last for ages, it's best to go for one that's been designed using the exact specifications of the make and model you drive. As they are vehicle-specific, Travall Dog Guards can be installed in minutes, with only basic tools. They are just as easy to remove when not required on a journey and, unlike some other barriers, they require no unsightly modification to the interior of your car.

Our Dog Guards are constructed from high-grade mild steel with an attractive oval profile for added strength. Components are laser-cut and precision welded, then finished with a unique nylon powder coating which makes them extremely resilient and scratch resistant. We're so certain of the quality of our premium Dog Guards that they all come with a Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects. In fact, the quality standards of our guards often exceed that of similar products supplied by the motor manufacturers themselves.

You say “dog guard,” I say “Travall Guard”

How many times have you seen cars with a grey dog guard sporting a distinctive orange logo, yet there is no sign of a dog in the car?  You may wonder why there is a dog guard installed permanently when the car owner doesn’t have a dog. What you’ve seen is the Travall Guard , which although ideal as a dog guard, offers a multitude of other applications that you may not have considered. So, while you say “dog guard,” I say “Travall Guard.”  It’s one multitasking car accessory that every car owner should invest in.  If you’re wondering why, keep on reading…

Travall Guard, the dog guard for your family

OK, we see you rolling your eyes at this one, because after all many families have a dog or two.  In this instance we’re talking just about the human members of your family.  How often have you been out in the car with the kids and found the need to brake suddenly? What people sometimes forget is that loose objects in a vehicle can injure (or worse) if you need to do an emergency stop.  Additionally some of us remove our parcel shelves, which exposes vehicle occupants to items in the boot that may be heavy and potentially lethal. All it takes is one moment of braking hard for your suitcase to shift from the boot to the back seat.

Installing a vehicle-specific barrier such as the Travall Guard ensures that your bags stay in the boot where they should be and passengers are shielded from these items. This is of course beneficial for all passengers, but particularly so for vulnerable babies in rear-facing car seats.

Travall Guard, the dog guard for your outdoor adventures

Do you find that when you go camping you stack the boot of your car to the roof? It’s crammed with all the “essentials” you need.  You may have your ultra waterproof tent that essentially builds itself. You’ve got your stainless cooking equipment to rival some professional kitchens. It’s no good if that gear ends up sliding into the main cabin when you apply the brake.  Not just for campers, the same situation applies if you’re off snowboarding, fishing, hiking, mountain biking or even golfing. Whatever your hobby is, you’re going to need something that keeps your equipment in the boot. The simple solution is to add a Travall Guard .  It keeps your gear in place where you want it to be, has the looks to satisfy any gear head and lives up to the hype too.

The US web site Active Gear Review recently reviewed the Travall Guard for outdoor applications and although pricing only pertains to American customers, you can read what they thought about the product right here (Active Gear Review) . For UK pricing and shipping details, visit  https://www.travall.co.uk .

Travall Guard, the dog guard for your working day

Employers understand the need to protect their employees in all sorts of situations including while they are on the road.  Many companies are now equipping their company cars with Travall Guards.  This ensures that work-related items that their employees need to transport can be stored neatly in the rear. In fact, certain businesses are now required to have barriers installed in their vehicles in order to meet licensing regulations.  Taxi drivers and owners of taxi fleets fit into this category. So why not add a barrier that perfectly fits the vehicle, without needing to drill holes into your car or modify it in any way? The guard maximises the available boot space. This allows for smaller vehicle use instead of larger vans, reducing fuel costs and providing protection at the same time.  If you are a business owner, adding the   Travall Guard to your fleet could be a wise investment.

Work tools and other items on back seat of car

Travall Guard, the dog guard for your pet

Last, but by no means least, the Travall Guard is also a dog guard.  It’ll keep your dog securely positioned while giving him a special place to travel in comfort. The guard’s design is for your specific make and model of vehicle, which allows for a perfect fit.  This ensures there’s no annoying rattling even on bumpy roads, so it won’t start the dogs barking.  The secure, snug fit means that the dog guard is no pushover.  Unlike universal barriers, it will stay in place even if a big or very lively dog gives it a nudge. If your dog is a drooler or chewer, the guard will continue to look good. This is thanks to the tough plant-based coating that coats the steel structure of the dog guard. The profile of the guard ensures that the driver still has good rear vision with the Travall Guard in place.  Importantly with a vehicle-specific dog guard installed it gives the driver one less driving distraction on the roads.

Dogs with Travall Guard

This post features the Travall Guard solely.  Travall offers a wide range of vehicle-specific car accessories to meet your lifestyle needs.  Follow us on Facebook or Twitter for upcoming posts on the full range of products that are available.  With Travall vehicle-specific accessories, no matter what you are doing, whether it’s for work or play, you can enjoy the journey.

Best dog guards 2023

Travelling with a dog in the car will be safer for everyone if you install a barrier to prevent them from roaming freely. we've tested a selection to see which are barking up the right tree....

Best dog guards

New Skoda Superb

New skoda superb estate, new skoda kodiaq.

Keeping your dog safe while you’re travelling with them in the car isn’t just a moral and ethical obligation – it’s a legal requirement. And it isn’t just important for your dog’s safety; it’s important for yours, too.

Dogs that roam free in a car can cause distraction or accidentally touch or move important controls, affecting your ability to drive safely. And even if they’re not knocking the gearlever or pressing buttons, in the event of a crash they can cause life-threatening injuries, not only to themselves, but also to other occupants of the car.

It’s essential, then, to suitably restrain your dog when you’re on the move, and that’s where a good quality dog guard can come in handy. But with so many to choose from, working out which is best can be a minefield. So, we’ve brought together a selection of them and put them to the test.

The products or services referenced in this story have been reviewed independently by our experts. When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. How we tested the dog guards

For this comparison test, we had the help of Luther, a nine-year-old black Labrador-Staffordshire bull terrier cross. Weighing 35kg, he promised to be a challenge for even the sturdiest of barriers.

We installed each dog guard in a Skoda Superb Estate  (one of the most dog-friendly cars around) using only the instructions available in the box. After adjusting them to suit our test car, we used our own body weight to see how weak or strong they were. And as always, price was factored into the final rankings.

1. BEST BUY – Argos Sakura Mesh Dog Guard

Argus Sakura - best dog guard

Given the value for money that it offers, the Argos dog guard, supplied by Sakura, is a runaway winner. Not only is it very well priced, but it also felt the sturdiest of all our barriers when it was attached, so it should prevent even the most determined of canines from breaking through into the front of the car. The sliding side extensions adjust easily, and the fitting instructions are very clear; instead of the fuzzy set of pictograms that you get with most dog guards, they’re written out properly.

What Car? says  5/5

2. Summit Mesh-Type Headrest Dog Guard

Summit dog guard

Constructed from a silver mesh, the Summit dog guard consists of a tall, central piece that can be mounted whichever way up you prefer, as well as two additional side sections. We didn’t need these in our test car, because the main guard filled the space well. However, that was just as well, because fitting the extra sections is fiddly. This guard is virtually identical to the RAC one in fifth place, yet costs far less.

What Car? says 4/5

3. Halfords Mesh Headrest Dog Guard

Halfords dog guard

This product is also similar in design to the RAC (and cheaper), with the same fiddly side extensions, but it uses a slightly different style of headrest bracket. Annoyingly, this doesn’t grip the head restraint quite as well, allowing the guard to slide around. On the plus side, the Halfords guard feels slightly sturdier in its construction.

What Car? says 3/5

4. XtremeAuto Universal Deluxe Dog Guard

XtremeAuto dog guard

Although it looks closest in design to the winning Argos Sakura guard, the XtremeAuto features a smaller central section that makes the side extensions more necessary. It also feels flimsier in places. As a result, at full price it would only be a two-star product, but it’s worth considering at the discounted price that was available at the time of writing.

5. RAC Advanced Mesh Dog Guard

RAC dog guard

The Summit guard’s strengths and weaknesses apply here too: adding the fiddly side extensions might well need two pairs of hands, but large elephant-foot rubber clamps make for easy attachment to the head restraints, and the instructions are easy to follow. The thing is, there’s no reason to buy this guard when Summit will sell you the exact same thing (aside from the badge) for a much lower price.

STARROAD-TIM Dog Car Barrier

STARROAD-TIM Dog Car Barrier

The best dog guards and barriers are designed with the safety of both you and your pooch in mind. By installing one in your car, you'll be shielding your hound from danger in case of an accident or any sharp or sudden movements you need to make as you're tackling the roads. Not to mention, these safe and protective dog travel accessories are designed to ensure your furry friend can't be a distraction to you while cruising along, preventing them from being able to jump from the back to the front of your vehicle.

According to the Highway Code , dogs and other animals need to be suitably restrained so they cannot distract or injure you or themselves while you are driving. You will need to make sure they are securely in a dog travel crate or carrier or in their own seat and belt to stop them from roaming freely in the car or you could face a rather hefty fine. However, even with a restraint in place, if your dog has a will, they’ll find a way and they’ll try with all their might to try and get into the front seat with you. That’s where the best dog guards and barriers will come in handy.

Best dog guards and barriers at a glance:

• Best overall: Sakura Headrest Dog Guard For Cars – view on Amazon UK • Best for large dogs: Streetwize Universal Heavy-Duty Adjustable Car Dog Guard – view on Argos • Best for small dogs: STARROAD-TIM Dog Car Barrier – view on Amazon UK

Dog barriers and guards are designed to create a more secure environment for you and your dog while travelling in the car. They will stop your pooch from roaming freely and trying to jump from seat to seat by giving them their own sectioned-off area. They come in various styles and materials, catering to different vehicle types and dogs, as well as different areas of the car. For example, larger dogs may benefit more from a metal dog guard installed in the boot whereas smaller breeds may prefer being buckled in with their doggy seat belt in the back seats with a mesh dog barrier in place to stop them from getting into the front seats.

Whether you’re heading down the road on a short trip or embarking on a longer adventure, the dog guards and barriers will give you peace of mind that everyone is staying safe in the car, no matter the duration of your journey. To help you decide which type of barrier to get, we’ve rounded up the best dog guards for all types of dogs and cars, that are designed for different positions in the car and made from varying materials.

Best for durability

Designed to offer heavy-duty protection, the Xtremeauto Car Dog Guard For Car Boot is ideal for keeping those larger canine companions safely contained in the back of the car while you're driving along. • Made using durable materials
  • Some reviewers felt like the shape of the guard didn't work with their particular vehicle model

Medium and large breeds will feel calm, safe and secure while travelling in the boot of your car when you've got the Streetwize Universal Heavy-Duty Adjustable Car Dog Guard installed. This guard is designed with two heavy-duty bars rather than the grid-style bars that are traditionally used so it'll still do the job of keeping bigger hounds in the back but won't feel as restricting as other designs.

Customer review: "Bought this as couldn't find a vehicle specific (FORD KA) dog guard. Easy to put together and easy to fit in boot of car, even for an old codger like me. Good and strong for my daughter's retriever."

  • Ideal for medium and large dogs
  • Suitable for hatchbacks, estates, 4x4s and people carriers
  • Not suitable for saloon cars

Did you know the RAC has a range of travel accessories to keep your hound safe and sound while they're travelling in the car with you? This RAC Cargo Guard and Dog Vent is available as a standard guard or a jumbo guard to suit your vehicle type as well as the size of your dog. Both are made from durable steel alloy and they're easy to install too, with no tools required for installation.

Customer review: "Fitted it to my Kia venga so easily. No rattles and the dog loves looking out the window! Highly recommended."

  • Choice of sizes
  • Made of durable steel
  • May not be suitable for very small dogs as they could try and squeeze themselves through the gaps

Best mesh barrier for the boot

Rrp: £ 13.30

If you'd prefer not to have a metal guard or barrier installed, we'd recommend considering the CiuGear Car Dog Guard. It's designed with a dual-layer mesh to make it that little bit stronger against chewers and has four elasticated hooks, with one in each corner, as well as hooks, so you can easily adjust the fit. Not just a boot barrier, it can also be used to separate front and back seats as well as a storage organiser net.

Customer review: "Does the job. Stops my dog from trying to come into the front of my motorhome which is what I bought it for. Very sturdy. Would purchase again."

  • Quick installation
  • Dual layer mesh
  • May not be as durable against larger and strong breeds

Best guard/barrier for front seats

Designed to prevent distracted driving by providing a barrier between your front and back seats. The Kurgo Backseat Barrier offers a low profile design with mesh panelling so your passenger princess or prince won't miss out on the action in the front of the car while being suitably restrained in the back seats. Simple to install by attaching to your headrests, it also features a pocket to keep your mutt's favourite toy and some water inside.

Customer review: "Fitted in range rover sport, I've tried 3 guards previously and my little 4kg pomeranian got over/under/ripped them all BUT this one is the best! He has been defeated! hurray ! It is better than others because if sits higher up between the seat 'head rests ' other than the others I have previously bought. Well worth the money for me because its worked!"

  • Mesh panel for visibility and breathability
  • Horizontal and vertical bars for structural support
  • Material may be easily scratched

Best for small dogs

If your hound needs the reassurance of seeing you and out to the front of the car while they're riding with you, the STARROAD-TIM Dog Car Barrier may be a good option for you. The whole thing is made from mesh so they'll be nothing obstructing their vision, not to mention it's extremely breathable, too. There are hooks and adjustable elastic straps that can be attached either to the handles above the door or the front seat headrests to find your perfect fit.

Customer review: "Item works well for stopping our dog jumping from the rear to front seats of the car. Easy to install and appears to be good value and quality. Time will tell how sturdy the product is in the longer term but very happy with it for the time being."

  • Doesn't take long to install
  • May not be ideal for chewers

With some help from the Animal Trust , we've answered some of the most frequently answered questions to do with travelling in the car with your pooch.

How can you make your pooch more comfortable while travelling in the car?

"Travelling in a vehicle can be distressing for your pet along with the motion causing them to be sick. To help your pet get used to being in the car, it’s best to introduce them to this as early as possible as part of their socialisation training. Exposure to this environment at a young age will desensitise their uncertainty and get them used to the motion. It’s best for your dog to be able to see out of a window when travelling, or if your pet is prone to motion sickness, allow them to face forward."

"Travel socialisation can be built up, starting with short distances and extending to longer distance car journeys. Treats can help make these new experiences positive and reinforce your pet that they have behaved well."

How should you transport your dog in the car?

To help you travel safely with your pooch in tow, you need to choose a travel system that will ensure they're suitably restrained and will also keep them comfortable for the duration of your journey. Here are some of the suitable systems you can use.

Dog car harness

"Pet-friendly car harnesses simply fit onto your pet and clip into place, making it safe for your pet to sit on the back seat or in the boot."

Travel dog crate

"Crating your dog will help keep them safe and secure while travelling in the car. Using a crate to transport your pet has the added benefit if they’re already used to this environment from their training."

Car carrier for a puppy or small adult dog

"A pet carrier is a portable and light alternative to a metal crate and can be easier to pack if you’re staying away from home."
