5 Ways VIVA Cruises Differs from River Cruising as You Know It

5 Ways VIVA Cruises Differs from River Cruising as You Know It

Photo: Ming Tappin

Travel Market Report recently returned from a week onboard VIVA Cruises’ brand-new vessel VIVA Two, sailing on the Danube River. Joining us onboard were the company’s COO Andrea Kruse and vice president of sales and marketing for North America, John Dennis.

If you haven’t heard of VIVA Cruises, it’s because the German-based cruise line launched in 2018 but due to the pandemic, the introduction to the North American market was delayed until now.

Headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, VIVA has a fleet of eight ships: VIVA Moments, VIVA Tiara, VIVA Voyage, VIVA Gloria, Swiss Diamond, Swiss Ruby, VIVA One, and VIVA Two. A new vessel (which will be identical to VIVA Two) will launch in 2024. Its parent company is Scylla AG, a builder of luxury river vessels.

Undeterred by the number of river cruise lines already in the market, VIVA Cruises’ executives told TMR its mission is to deliver a distinctive cruise experience coupled with outstanding value.

Here are five ways VIVA Cruises differs from the competition.

1. VIVA Cruises offers an International Cruise Experience Although based in Germany, VIVA markets itself as an international brand. Roughly 50% of its guests are from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg), and the rest are primarily from the Scandinavian countries, Israel, and a smattering of others. At this point, the line has only had a smattering of North American cruisers, but Kruse and Dennis told us the line aims to grow its North American customer base to 10%.

Guests are mainly couples, age 60+, and retired.

German and English are the official languages spoken onboard. Announcements, lectures, and printed materials are in both languages. Guests are congenial and social, and we observed many European guests speaking English as well as their mother tongue, with German being most prominent.

With a large European clientele, your clients might wonder about the smoking situation onboard VIVA Cruises. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas. On VIVA Two, these were located at the bow and stern of the ship. All interiors (including staterooms) and all other outdoor areas including the top viewing deck are smoke-free.

So, who are the perfect clients for VIVA Cruises?

We’d recommend advisors target clients who are well-traveled, open to meeting travelers from other parts of the world, and are comfortable cruising with people who speak different languages. VIVA Cruises is not for clients who prefer to be around others just like them.

2. VIVA Cruises Sails Year-Round VIVA Cruises is the only cruise line that operates year-round in Europe. All others generally shut down between January and March. As such, VIVA offers its guests a chance to see the rivers and cities from a different perspective – away from the busy season, large crowds, and heat.

Clients also benefit from lower pricing during the winter months.

3. VIVA Cruises Offers Unique Itineraries VIVA’s Winter program offers four-night wellness cruises on the Rhine that include a massage treatment, and wholesome menus featuring low-carb meals, healthy bowls, freshly-squeezed juices, detox waters, and organic teas. Other winter cruises include four-night “City Trips” that sail through Belgium or The Netherlands.

VIVA is currently working on cruise-tour packages that combine short sailings with city stays in places such as Munich, Passau, and Dusseldorf.

In the spring, summer, and fall, VIVA sails on the Rhine, the Rhône, the Main, the Moselle, the Seine, and the Danube. Its itineraries range from three- and four-night “highlight” sailings, as well as standard week-long cruises to longer Danube sailings of up to 15 nights.

VIVA also operates unique seven- and nine-night sailings along Germany’s Baltic Coast, which is a rare offer. Sailing roundtrip from Stralsund in north-eastern Germany, the cruise visits quaint coastal villages and into Poland via the Szczecin Lagoon. It’s a great option for clients with German and Polish heritage or those who have done a lot of European river cruising and want to try a different destination.

4. VIVA Cruises Offers Outstanding Value For the North American market, VIVA Cruises operates on an all-inclusive basis. VIVA’s fares include all meals, all-day beverages (including a stocked mini-bar), Wi-Fi, crew gratuities, and one excursion at every port.

Breakfasts and lunches are served buffet-style, accompanied by cooked-to-order eggs at breakfast and a selection of hot entrees at lunch. Dinner is table service. Restaurants operate open-seating style, meaning guests can dine any time during the posted hours and sit wherever they like.

A secondary restaurant – VIVA’s Bistro – specializes in seafood and offers table-service lunch and dinner.

Debuting on VIVA Two is the Moments restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch, and serves a special five-course wine-pairing dinner. Other than reservations being required for dinner at VIVA’s Bistro and Moments, there is no extra charge to dine in either restaurant. VIVA’s menus feature local specialties as well as international cuisine, and every meal we sampled was beautifully prepared and delicious.

The beverage menu is quite extensive, but there is one difference wine-loving clients will want to know about. Local wines are only featured on occasion or by request. The house wine on our sailing was from South Africa, but if you wanted something different, the staff was happy to fetch it.

Standard in river cruising, the excursion included at every port is a port-highlight walking tour. Special interest excursions are available for purchase. All excursions operate in English and German, with separate buses and guides for each language.

5. VIVA Cruises is Green VIVA Two has received the gold certificate from the Green Award Foundation, given only to vessels with the highest environmental standards. Sustainable practices onboard VIVA’s fleet include using virtually sulfur-free fuel that reduces emissions, and using shore power where available. Guests receive reusable water bottles, which can be filled with sparking or still mineral water at centrally-located dispensers. There are also 76 solar panels built into the top deck on VIVA Two to help offset some of the ship’s energy usage.

How to Present VIVA Cruises to your clients With the plethora of river cruise lines in the market, it is important to differentiate between the brands and present the right one to your clients. Here are VIVA Cruises’ top-selling features:

  • VIVA’s all-inclusive pricing offers one of the best values in the marketplace. The lead-in rate for a seven-day sailing is just under $2,000. Other than VIVA, all-inclusive river cruises are only offered onboard luxury brands, and those are at a much higher price.
  • Short river cruise sailings are uncommon, so VIVA’s three- to five-night voyages make great add-ons to a land-based vacation or as sampler cruises for those wanting to try river cruising for the first time.
  • VIVA’s variety of embarkation/debarkation ports – such as Passau, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg – gives clients lots of options of where to begin and end their cruise, and are great for pre- or post-cruise stays. (Other river lines typically start and end their sailings in Amsterdam, Budapest, and Basel.)
  • While VIVA’s international guest mix is an excellent way to meet people from all over the world and engage in cultures different from our own, not all clients are comfortable with the concept. It’s important to qualify properly and to ensure they are open to sailing onboard a line with an international clientele and atmosphere.

Selling VIVA Cruises With a goal of expanding its North American clientele to 10% of its total, VIVA Cruises’ Kruse and Dennis told TMR they are eager to help travel advisors with product and sales training. Advisors can email [email protected] to register themselves to earn commission and receive notices on upcoming training opportunities such as webinars and FAM trips. Once registered, advisors can make bookings online. VIVA offers  15% commission with no NCFs. The VIVA Cruises North American office is located in Ft Lauderdale, and its U.S. website has company and ship information, itineraries, and pricing. VIVA’s call center can be reached at 1-833-YES-VIVA (9am to 9pm ET) or by email at [email protected]

A Volga river cruise is more than a geographical voyage; it’s also a journey through Russia’s rich and captivating history. No other experience takes you so completely to another place and time. The Volga is Europe’s longest and largest river; it meanders through the stories of Ivan the Terrible and his rise to power, the two historic ‘Greats’ Peter and Catherine, and then on into today. It’s a unique opportunity to see modern Russia in the context of its intriguing history, ably assisted by friendly and professional academics and tour guides. A Volga Dream Russian river tour promises to leave you with an unforgettable afterglow of fond memories.

St. Petersburg. Petehof

Moscow to St. Petersburg River Cruise

Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia’s best-known cities, but the towns of Russia’s historic Golden Ring are delightful too. The luxurious Volga Dream offers a unique opportunity to visit these Russian gems by sailing gently along the Volga River on an unforgettable cruising experience. In small, exclusive groups you’ll enjoy preferential access to some of Russia’s most significant cultural sites.

Volgogard. Mamaev Hill

Moscow to Astrakhan River Cruise

Your River Cruise on the luxurious MS Volga Dream takes you from Moscow along Russia’s grand Volga River to the legend that is Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) and Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. Along the way, you’ll discover the treasures of Yaroslavl, the oldest city on the Volga, medieval Nizhniy Novgorod and beautiful Kazan, the ancient Tatar capital. We plan our tour carefully to combine the very best of Moscow with a world-class Volga River cruise.

viva cruises tours

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

A vacation to the Bahamas just got easier.  Bahamas-based Western Air   is expanding with new flights connecting popular destinations in the islands and Florida. Western will begin flights connecting Freeport and Grand Bahama to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 22, 2024. Best of all, the airline offers free checked bags for the quick 25-minute flights, and customer-friendly ticket policies.  "Continuing in its trademark ticket flexibility, all Western Air tickets are valid for one year with the freedom to adjust your travel plans anytime without penalty or change fees," the airline said in a press release.  The airline offers connecting service to other locations throughout the Bahamas including Bimini, Cat Island, Exuma, Marsh Harbour, Nassau, and San Andros.  Travel + Leisure spotted tickets for the new flight between Florida and Grand Bahama available for purchase on Western Air's website for as low as $159 one-way. The daily flight from Grand Bahama International Airport to Fort Lauderdale departs at 9:30 a.m., arriving at 9:50 a.m., and the return takes back off for the Bahamas at 11:00 a.m., arriving into the Bahamas at 11:20 a.m.. The Bahamas is a collection of 16 major islands that span over 100,000 square miles. The islands are known for their postcard-like qualities with clear water, fine sand beaches, and unique outdoor adventures such as hiking or snorkeling.  More than 9.6 million travelers visited the Bahamas in 2023, which was a 38 percent increase over the previous year.  As a way to welcome visitors to the Bahamas, hotels and resorts are still offering unique deals and discounts. For example, Atlantis Paradise Island has an "Endless Summer" promotion where guests can receive a fourth night free, and up to $400 in resort credits.  The Bahamas Tourism Department also recently spotlighted deals available through the end of the year including the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach offering discounts on all-inclusive vacations, or discounts on day trips in the Exuma cays.

Chris martin’s protégé victoria canal, 25, denies ‘bonkers’ rumors she’s dating tom cruise, 62.

Chris Martin’s Protégé, Victoria Canal, denied rumors that she is dating Tom Cruise.

“Guys, this is literally bonkers, but apparently the tabloids think i am dating tom cruise. i’m deceased.💀,” she wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement Monday along with a photo of herself covering her laughter with one hand as well as screengrabs of several tabloids reporting their alleged romance.

Canal, 25, admitted that Cruise, 62, is a “lovely person” but is definitely not her boyfriend.

“Let’s just stop this in its tracks – i’m sorry to bum u out but i am not dating the man, albeit a lovely person & artist,” she wrote. “lol never thought I would have to clarify that out loud in my life.”

The Spanish singer said that the “Risky Business” actor has been “nothing but a respectful and encouraging person and mentor” and compared him to her dad, her music teachers, and her other mentor, Chris Martin.

“And again, i am friends with all kinds of people who are very different to me. you learn a lot if you’re open to life bringing you those teachers,” she wrote.

She then seized the moment to promote her upcoming musical projects including new songs and a  Europe and North America tour.

“Ok lastly gonna take this opportunity to say I’M GOING ON TOUR and have 2 new slaying songs out so if you’re new here, enjoy xx,” she said.

The “Mission: Impossible” star and Canal recently spurred dating rumors after they met at the Glastonbury Festival in England earlier this summer.

Canal had performed with Coldplay on stage in June and Cruise was spotted taking in the performance from a VIP area.

“Tom invited Victoria to watch him film for the whole day and that is just not something he does for his random friends,” a source  told the Sun . “It might have seemed unlikely that they would become anything more than friends but they are pretty much inseparable.”

The insider claimed that Cruise and Canal had been “seeing a lot of one another” and that their romance had been blooming “in plain sight.”

Days after their initial meeting at the music festival, Cruise and Canal traveled to the “Twisters” premiere in London together via helicopter.

“We met backstage at Glastonbury and talked about the upcoming premiere we were both going to and he said, ‘roll with me!’” Canal explained on Instagram .

A week later, they were seen at the Battersea Power Station’s helipad for another flight. They also attended Bruce Springsteen’s sold out show at Wembley Stadium and both posed for a photo with the “Dancing in the Dark” artist.

“I should promote my song (california sober) coming out at midnight but I’m too busy watching bruce with the most random friend i’ve ever made ! xxxx” Canal captioned an  Instagram post with Cruise and Springsteen.

Canal, who was born without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome, caught the attention of Martin after she released her first EP in 2022, which included her hit, “Swan Song.”

The “Viva La Vida” singer called the track, “one of the best songs ever written” and invited her to join Coldplay on stage during their set at Glastonbury. Martin also signed her to his record label, Parlophone.

Cruise was most recently romantically linked to Russian socialite, Elsina Khayrova, 36, though they split this past winter after things moved too quickly.

Olympics 2024: Lisa Carrington claims another gold in K2 with Alicia Hoskin at Paris

Michael Burgess

Michael Burgess

By Michael Burgess in Paris

What more can you say about Dame Lisa Carrington?

The GOAT in a boat has claimed her seventh Olympic gold medal, with another brilliant performance in Paris lifting the K2 500m crew to the top of the podium.

It’s also a special day for Alicia Hoskin, who joins the select group of Kiwis to claim multiple golds at a single Games, after the pair enjoyed historic success in the K4 yesterday .

This was always going to be a tough race, with an exceptional K2 field here in Paris. That was shown on a startling first day of the regatta, when the world champion Danish team were knocked out in the quarter-finals, in a major surprise.

The race included two crack combinations from Hungary – the spiritual home of kayaking – as well as two pairs from Germany, who have claimed so many team boat medals over the years, along with the best teams from Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Conditions were also incredibly tough. There was a blustery wind blowing across the course, that got stronger as the day progressed. It made the start extremely difficult, as well as controlling the boat, adding an extra layer of complication to the contest.

But Carrington and Hoskin are resilient – as well as skilful – after all those sessions over the years on Lake Pupuke in Auckland, where wind is often a factor.

That served them well on Friday. In front of another large Kiwi contingent of friends, family and supporters, they shot off the start line and immediately established a clear edge. Carrington and Hoskin were 0.65s ahead at the halfway point, and despite being pushed by fellow medallists from Hungary and Germany, the New Zealand boat crossed more than two seconds ahead.

Their time of 1m 37.28s wasn’t far behind the world record set by Carrington and Caitlin Regal in Tokyo. And it made for another memorable day at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, as Carrington extended her legacy and Hoskin started a new chapter, following yesterday’s triumph in the K4.
