Update—The Top Travel Companies in Brazil

Brazilian travel trade giant PANROTAS has released its annual Forum magazine, a more-or-less directory of the top businesses in the country’s travel and tourism industry. The 128-page publication, available here , is usually released at the annual FÓRUM PANROTAS , a must-attend event for key figures in the industry, usually held just as Spring begins. However, concern over the impact of the coronavirus prompted the publication to move the forum, which had been scheduled to take place March 17-18, has been re-schedule and will take place September 9-10 in São Paulo.

The top players in the Brazilian travel and tourism industry are called travel distributors—not tour operators or travel agents—because many companies are both travel agent and tour operator, and some also have a stake in other sectors of the industry. For instance, the largest travel company in the country, CVC , comprises RexturAdvance , an airline consolidator; Grupo Trend , which is based primarily in Orlando, where it conducts receptive tour business; Submarino Viagens , a pioneer in online sales of airline tickets, hotels, packaged travel and cruises in Brazil; Experimento , an education-focused operator; and Visual Turismo , a travel agent-only operation.

The magazine also features lists of top performers in various sectors in the travel and tourism industry, as well as a special report on the history of women in the tourism industry in Brazil.

Latin America’s Biggest Travel Company Isn’t Despegar or Booking

Brazil’s CVC Corp.’s purchase of Argentina’s Almundo is a strategic move to increase its digital reach — but more importantly it helps CVC build even greater scale beyond its home borders.

While Despegar and Booking.com have arguably become household names for finding online travel deals in Latin America, the biggest travel company by bookings in the region is one that many may have never heard of: Brazil’s CVC Corp .

The group, which started in 1972 as Agência de Viagens CVC, has since grown into a parent company with several brands covering everything from cruises, car rentals, hotels, flights, and all-inclusive packages. While Brazilians likely have seen the name plastered on one of the more than 1,200 travel agency franchise offices around the country, the name probably isn’t recognizable to many travelers in neighboring Spanish-speaking countries. But that’s changing, thanks to some key international acquisitions and a plan to become more digitally focused.

CVC has made several acquisitions in the past few years, including a move to buy 60 percent of Argentina-based travel companies Avantrip , Ola , and Biblos Travel in 2018.

But perhaps the most transformative deal is the $77 million acquisition of Buenos Aires-based Almundo, which CVC subsidiary Submarino Viagens closed in November. The transaction closed just about a year after Spain’s Iberostar Group upped its stake in the Argentine travel company to 75 percent. Almundo, which provides services in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil, recorded $60 million in net revenues and $425 million in reservations during 2018, according to a CVC filing.

Almundo will give CVC a leg up in the competitive Argentine online travel market — the Brazilian conglomerate has said the purchase will double its reach in the country.

But more importantly, the Almundo acquisition will provide CVC with the “omnichannel” sales platform the company has been developing for years. Under that model, Almundo provides services via physical travel agency offices, call centers, and online to reach all types of customers, from discount-savvy online shoppers looking for a last-minute flight to those who prefer to go over package deals with agents. Almundo CEO Juan Pablo Lafosse told Skift that Almundo is a “key piece in this transformation” of CVC to become more digitally focused, and that the two companies are highly complementary.

Lafosse underscores that Almundo is an “absolutely digital company,” although it has about 100 travel agency offices in the region. Almundo says that about 27 percent of its clients use assistance such as in-person services or phone calls when booking trips, whereas 73 percent book online. In terms of the share of billing from bookings, in the past four months that number is about 46 percent from assisted sales and 54 percent from the web, due to the median ticket prices on the web being lower than those in assisted channels.

One challenge in the Argentine market has been the weak economy and inflation’s impact on travelers’ willingness to buy flights there. In the last two years, volumes have reduced significantly, by about 40 percent, Lafosse said. Therefore, travelers have been opting for closer, cheaper destinations, and average prices have fallen. So, communicating promotions to customers as quickly as possible has been key.

“Today, the client is a client much more about promotions,” he said.

The acquisition of Almundo’s omnichannel platform will position CVC to compete with the likes of Buenos Aires-based Despegar in Argentina and beyond.

But while CVC made an acquisition to deepen its online sales platform, Despegar recently made an important deal with an important brick-and-mortar travel agency in the region to expand its own omnichannel ambitions. It recently purchased Latin America-based travel agent Viajes Falabella for $27 million in June, which operates in Chile, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.

The transaction is especially notable due to the reach of the overall Fallabella brand in Latin America — the company operates physical department stores, online shopping platforms, and banking services in addition to its travel agencies, all tied to its CMR Puntos loyalty program, now connected with Despegar.

We planned a 39-day trip to Chile and Argentina for this year. Once we had decided to go ahead and use Zicasso’s company, we spoke with our travel agent (we live in Australia) to discuss our requirements and the places we would like to visit. He filled the 39 days to include all the places we wanted to visit, plus some at his suggestion. We kept in touch by email, as well as in-person calls, on a number of occasions to discuss and confirm the itinerary with it being so long! We ended up with a fantastic itinerary that met all our requirements. Everything went to exactly to plan.When one of our internal flights was cancelled, we let our travel agent know. He answered straight away and let the hotels, etc, know that we wouldn't be arriving as planned. For us, knowing our agent was available at any time of day to assist if things didn't go to plan was one of our critieria when booking the trip. He also checked in with us the night we arrived, during the trip, and when we arrived home.

Southern Brazil has been hit by the worst floods in more than 80 years. At least 39 people have died

Heavy rains in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul killed 39 people, with another 68 still missing, the state civil defense agency said Friday, as record-breaking floods devastated cities and forced thousands to leave their homes.

The death toll from heavy rains in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state jumped to 56 as of Saturday morning, according to the state’s civil defense agency. Helicopters are being used to rescue residents on the rooftops who were isolated in their homes by the widespread flooding that has already displaced more than 30,000 people.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Heavy rains in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul killed 39 people, with another 68 still missing, the state civil defense agency said Friday, as record-breaking floods devastated cities and forced thousands to leave their homes.

It was the fourth such environmental disaster in a year, following floods in July, September and November 2023 that killed 75 people in total.

The flooding statewide has surpassed that seen during a historic 1941 deluge, according to the Brazilian Geological Service. In some cities, water levels were at their highest since records began nearly 150 years ago, the agency said.

On Thursday, a dam at a hydroelectric plant between the cities of Bento Goncalves and Cotipora partially collapsed and entire cities in the Taquari River valley, like Lajeado and Estrela, were completely overtaken by water. In the town of Feliz, 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the state capital, Porto Alegre, a massively swollen river swept away a bridge that connected it with the neighboring city of Linha Nova.

Operators reported electricity, communications and water cuts across the state. More than 24,000 people had to leave their homes, according to the civil defense agency.

Without internet, telephone service or electricity, residents struggled to provide updates or information to their relatives living in other states. Helicopters flew continually over the cities while stranded families with children awaited rescue on the rooftops.

Isolete Neumann, 58, lives in the city of Lajeado in the Taquari River valley and told The Associated Press she has never before seen a scenario like the one she is now experiencing.

“People were making barricades in front of hospitals with sand and gravel. It felt like a horror movie,” she said by phone. Some people in her region were so desperate, she added, that they threw themselves into the water currents.

Neumann’s own neighborhood wasn’t inundated, but has no running water and she hasn’t showered since Tuesday. She said she’s collecting rainwater in a basin to be able to cook. A clothing store she owns in the city’s central area is flooded, she added.

“I don’t even know how it must be. There must be nothing left.”

The downpour started Monday and is expected to last at least through Saturday, Marcelo Seluchi, chief meteorologist at the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters, told Brazil’s public television network Friday.

On Thursday night, Gov. Eduardo Leite alerted the state’s population — known as gauchos — about the persistence of rains and floods. The situation was expected to worsen in Porto Alegre, he said.

“As a human being, I am devastated inside, just like every gaucho is,” he said. “But as governor, I am here steadfast and I guarantee that we will not falter. We are doing everything with focus, attention, discipline, and outrage, to ensure that everything within our reach is done.”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva acknowledged the flood victims at a press conference on Friday alongside Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Brasilia .

“The first words from Minister Fumio Kishida in the meeting we held were of solidarity with the people of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, who are victims by one of the largest floods we have ever known. Never before in the history of Brazil had there been such a quantity of rain in one single location,” Lula said.

Weather across South America is affected by the climate phenomenon El Niño , a periodic, naturally occurring event that warms surface waters in the Equatorial Pacific region. In Brazil, El Niño has historically caused droughts in the north and intense rainfall in the south.

This year, the impacts of El Niño have been particularly dramatic, with a historic drought in the Amazon . Scientists say extreme weather is happening more frequently due to human-caused climate change.

Karina Lima, a 36-year-old scientist and PhD candidate in climatology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, told The Associated Press that the state is located in a region with certain characteristics that amplify El Niño’s destructive potential.

“Models have long predicted that Rio Grande do Sul will continue to see an increase in average annual precipitation and extreme precipitation, meaning more concentrated and severe rainfall,” she said.

Dengue fever causes over 2,000 deaths so far this year in Brazil

Dengue fever has killed over 2,000 people in Brazil while almost 4.2 million cases of the malady have been confirmed this year in South America's largest country. The incidence rate of the disease is 2,056.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to federal health authorities, some 2,073 deaths have been added to dengue's tab, while 2,291 other victims are still under investigation. The new figures represent an all-time high for Brazil, the Health Ministry reckoned while urging people not to lower their guard even though the worst part of dengue infections is believed to be behind. In all of 2023, only 1,094 deaths were recorded due to dengue in what had been the year with the most fatalities.

“We still have to pay attention. We have climbed the mountain, now we are descending, but we still have many cases that can occur and deaths that can be avoided,” warned the Sanitary and Environmental Surveillance Secretary Ethel Maciel.

Six Brazilian municipalities are to receive shortly the first batch of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes infected with the wolbachia bacteria, a kind of Trojan horse to decimate the community of infected insects with viral load, it was reported. The strategy is expected to be extended next year to another 22 municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais.

The districts to receive the man-treated mosquitoes are Uberlândia Minas Gerais); Londrina and Foz do Iguaçu (Paraná); Presidente Prudente (São Paulo); Joinville (Santa Catarina); and Natal (Rio Grande do Norte).

According to Brazil's Health Ministry, The South American country is the first to incorporate biotechnology as a public strategy to reduce dengue cases in the medium and long term. The so-called Wolbachia method consists of inserting a bacterium into mosquito eggs in the laboratory and breeding Aedes aegypti carrying the microorganism. The infected insects are unable to carry the viruses that cause dengue, Zika, chikungunya, or yellow fever, but, inoculated with Wolbachia, when they reproduce they transmit the bacteria to others, preventing them from transmitting the disease to more humans.

The age groups most affected are 20 to 29 years old, 30 to 39 years old, and 40 to 49 years old, while the least affected are children under one-year-old, followed by people aged 80 years and over. Women have a higher rate of infection, with 55.1% compared to 44.9% of men.

The most affected regions are the Federal District (Brasília), Minas Gerais, Paraná, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. Right behind these is Rio de Janeiro.
