James Taylor, Carole King announce reunion tour dates

Share story

In the four decades since James Taylor and Carole King helped launch each other’s storied careers, the notion of someday recapturing that magic never completely faded.

“Every time we would run into each other at a benefit or at an event … we’d say we have to get the band back together, get that band back together and do some touring before the chance slips away,” Taylor said in a recent interview.

On Monday, Taylor and King announced dates for the U.S. leg of their much-anticipated “Troubadour Reunion” tour. The tour, marking the 40th anniversary of the pair’s breakthrough shows, will launch May 7 in Portland, Ore.

As previously announced, the tour will begin overseas in Melbourne, Australia, on March 26.

“In a sense we started our solo careers sharing a band, sharing a stage, we did a show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that really sort of broke both of us out of the box and established our careers,” Taylor said.

King played on Taylor’s 1970 “Sweet Baby James” album and Taylor on King’s 1971 “Tapestry” album.

“We started performing, originally she was in my band, and then I increasingly encouraged her to sing her own songs,” said Taylor. “She was used to being a writer, and to having other people do her tunes.”

King, in fact, had already written 22 Top 40 hits, including Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.”

“Tapestry,” released in 1971, sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and made King the first woman to win four Grammys in a single year.

Taylor, 61, has won five Grammys during his career. Both Taylor and King, 67, are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The idea for a reunion tour had been brewing for years, Taylor said.

“Finally, two years ago we played at a sort of anniversary celebration for (the Troubadour), with the original band and that was so great we decided to take it on the road.”

The tour will reunite not only Taylor and King, but key members of their original band, including guitarist Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

While the shows will be at larger venues such as the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Garden, the performers hope to recapture at least some of the intimacy of those early Troubadour days, in part by staging the concerts in the round. Taylor said he and King will remain on the stage together throughout the show.

“I think we’ll do two sets, both of us will be on stage the whole time, either singing backup for each or playing behind the other. We’ll sort of skip back and forth, do a song of hers, a song of mine, but we’ll stay on the stage,” he said.

“It’s just going to be a blast.”

A Song Factory: A Review of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” at Paramount Theatre

RECOMMENDED

Wait, she wrote that song too?

That’s what goes through your head when you see “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” You knew she had written a lot of songs, but ALL those songs? “So Far Away” AND “Some Kind of Wonderful?” “Pleasant Valley Sunday” AND “One Fine Day?” Did this woman ever sleep?

With the abundantly talented Tiffany Topol as King, backed by a great cast, the new production of “Beautiful” at Aurora’s Paramount Theatre is irresistible—the audience was helpless before it. There are so many great songs, wonderfully performed, and an emotionally resonant story of a gifted woman shedding a selfish man and making her own way.

Dating from 2013, this is a jukebox musical, which means it’s mostly songs, stitched together with a book by the late Douglas McGrath that’s witty but sometimes creaks with the effort of quick-sketch biography. (“Guys, it’s 1964… Let’s not be so uptight!”) But the cast, especially Topol, Rebecca Hurd and Christopher Kale Jones as the songwriting team of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, Ian Paul Custer as Don Kirshner, and Laura T. Fisher as King’s hidebound but loving mother—keeps the story fresh and human.

The story opens when King is a ponytailed sixteen-year-old. Mom wants her to teach music, but Carole has bigger ambitions and presents a song to the crusty Kirshner, who takes her on but warns that her lyrics need work. She meets the handsome Gerry Goffin (C.J. Blaine Eldred), who starts writing lyrics for her melodies. He also gets her pregnant, and they get married.

Working out of the 1650 Broadway building in New York City, Goffin and King produce hit after hit in what King describes as a song “factory.” In the show, their songs are performed both by Topol and Eldred (as they’re worked out in the studio) and then by singers portraying the Drifters, the Shirelles and Little Eva (Ariana Burks)—their babysitter—who got a hit with “The Locomotion.”

We also get songs by the wisecracking rival team of Weil and Mann, including “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” with Luke Nowakowski and Matt Thinnes as The Righteous Brothers.

A couple embrace on a couch in a dark room next to table lamps, consoling one another.

The performances, with flashy sixties costumes by Theresa Ham, were all fun. Some were outstanding—with Burks, Nowakowski and Thinnes knocking it out of the park.

The second act has fewer songs and more drama, as King’s marriage breaks up and she starts her solo career. The action lags a bit, and it would have been nice to have more of King’s later work, to show her progress. But the opening-night audience was on Carole’s side and cheered wildly both when she dumped Goffin and then reluctantly took the stage on her own for the first time with “It’s Too Late.” There is genuine warmth and wit in the relationship between King, Weil, Mann and Kirshner—reflected in the touching four-part-harmony rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend.”

Eldred as Goffin is also a strong singer. Despite the character’s flaws (and the fact that McGrath gave him some of the worst lines), the show offers a generous appreciation of Goffin’s own talent.

Topol, who got a Jeff nomination for “Girl” in Paramount’s production of “Once,” is vulnerable and touching as King. She’s self-effacing in the first act, but her voice is always so powerful that the audience was ready and eager for the Act Two transformation.

Aurora is a long way from Chicago, and it’s a nerve-wracking drive on a weeknight. But this show makes it worth the trip. It’s also a revelation to see the gilded interior of the ninety-three year-old Paramount Theatre—a Venetian fantasy with Art Deco influence. Check it out—there’s a lot going on beyond I-355.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” at Paramount Theatre, 23 East Galena Boulevard, Aurora. Through June 16. Tickets available at paramountaurora.com .

Beautiful – Carole King Musical Tickets

After 6 remarkable years on Broadway, the Tony, and Grammy Award winning, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical goes on tour, and it’s coming to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis! The inspiring true story of one woman’s remarkable journey from teenage songwriter all the way to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Featuring the string of pop classics Carole King wrote for the biggest acts in music, to her own life-changing, chart-busting success with Tapestry, Beautiful will take you back to where it all began, and onto a ride of a lifetime!

“Strikes genuine grace notes!” – NY Post

“beautiful is a joyous celebration” – entertainment weekly.

Featuring over two dozen pop classics, including “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “Up on the Roof,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and Natural Woman,” this crowd-pleasing international phenomenon is filled with the songs you remember, and a story you’ll never forget. The world of Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who wrote her first number 1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” at the young age of 17, for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was Carol Kings 1971 album, Tapestry, that took her music to the peak, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop for the decade. Since then, more than 400 of her compositions have been re-recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in hundreds of hit singles and 6 Grammy Awards.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by Douglas McGrath, it tells the story of the early life and career of Carole King, using songs that she wrote, combined with other contemporary songs by Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector, and others. The show is directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Josh Prince, scenic design by Derek Mclane, costumes by Alejo Vietti, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski, and sound by Tony and Drama Desk Award winning Brian Ronan.

Grammy Award Winner for “Best Musical Theater Album” of 2015

The original production of Beautiful received its world premiere at the Curran Theatre, San Francisco, in October 2013, with direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Josh Prince, and starring Jessie Mueller in a Tony Award-winning performance as Carole King and Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin. It made its Broadway debut at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014, winning two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. A West End production starring Katie Brayben as Carole began in February 2015 where it won two Laurence Olivier Awards. Also in 2015, the album of music recorded from the production won the Grammy Award Winner for Best Musical Theater Album and a film adaptation was announced with Douglas McGrath adapting his book into a screenplay for the big screen.

“Out of control amazing!” – The Wall Street Journal

“instantly joins the ranks of the irresistible” – the huffington post, “a must see” – nbc new york.

“Watching Beautiful, the new jukebox musical celebrating the remarkable life and work of Carole King, you may not feel the earth move under your feet. But the new Broadway show emerges as a slick and joyous celebration of female empowerment. Like Jersey Boys, Beautiful features a smart, well-crafted, and often funny book (by Douglas McGrath) that cleverly threads together a memorable catalog of early rock hits such as ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ and ‘Take Good Care of My Baby.’ It also boasts a winning central performance by Jessie Mueller as the shy Jewish girl from Brooklyn who only gradually comes into her own as a headlining voice of a generation… Beautiful fills the charisma vacuum with the substantial addition of King and Goffin’s friendly songwriting rivals Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, played with megawatt scene-stealing abandon by Anika Larsen and Jarrod Spector…” – By Thom Geier for Entertainment Weekly.

‘Beautiful’ is lovely: Feel the earth move with vibrant take on Carole King’s life at Paramount

is carole king on tour

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” — 3.5 stars

It might be an oxymoron to call a toe-tapping and funny musical gripping, but “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” playing at Aurora’s Paramount Theatre is just that.

The bio-musical puts you in the piano seat with the groundbreaking singer-songwriter, multiple Grammy Award winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honoree.

Led by Tiffany Topol’s penetrating performance as King, a strong cast eats up the script that journeys from nervous Brooklyn teen Carole selling music producer Donny Kirshner on “It Might as Well Rain Until September” to her Carnegie Hall triumph.

What distinguishes “Beautiful,” directed by Jim Corti and Johanna McKenzie Miller, from medley musicals that drape nonstop hits around weak plots is how the fairy-tale story closely follows King’s life.

One central element is her relationship with Gerry Goffin, King’s musical partner and first husband.

is carole king on tour

As Goffin, C.J. Blaine Eldred makes a compelling transition from a smart and talented romantic hero to an unhinged and unfaithful spouse.

He’s a limelight-stealing foil for Topol’s King, the no-drama, hardworking wife, mother and composer whose brilliance is overlooked.

And though it’s called “Beautiful,” the musical has some excruciatingly uncomfortable scenes as Goffin unravels in front of King and their friends lyricist Cynthia Weil and composer Barry Mann.

In contrast, the couple’s creative rivalry with Weil and Mann to top the Billboard charts is irresistible as they crank out gem after gem like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “On Broadway,” “One Fine Day” and “The Locomotion.”

is carole king on tour

As Weil and Mann, Rebecca Hurd and Christopher Kale Jones, who comically fall in and out of, and in love again, have strong voices and chemistry.

Ian Paul Custer brings a “Mad Men” panache to Donny Kirshner, while Laura T. Fisher as King’s mom, Genie Klein, is very Brooklyn.

Over 2½ hours, the musical deals with unexpected pregnancy, racism, sexism, adultery and mental illness.

is carole king on tour

Those issues play out to a contagious sound track from an effervescent ensemble with standouts including Ariana Burks as Little Eva and Marta Bady as Janelle Woods.

Adding to the effect is spot-on costume design by Theresa Ham covering three decades of fashion, from the Shirelles’ 1960s shocking pink outfits to King’s 1970s hippie chic.

is carole king on tour

But, in the end, it’s Topol’s tapestry. Her epiphanic declaration to the high-maintenance Goffin that their daughters deserve better and “so do I” is riveting, and her unique voice singing “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman” is … beautiful.

Note to parents: Fears King’s music may not appeal to the Swiftie generation were groundless. The 13-year-old accompanying this reviewer laughed at the jokes, loved the songs and pronounced it “snazzy.”

A tapestry of talent: 'Beautiful: The Carole King Musical' shines in Titusville

"beautiful: the carole king musical" celebrates the music of a generation at titusville playhouse. the show runs through feb. 18..

is carole king on tour

In a celebration of the timeless melodies and extraordinary life of a music icon, Titusville Playhouse is set to start 2024 with "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical." The show opens Friday, Jan. 12, for a run that extends through Feb. 18.

"Beautiful" takes us on a nostalgic journey through Carole King 's life, chronicling her rise to stardom from a precocious young songwriter to a chart-topping star. The show weaves together a tapestry of King's iconic hits, from the early days of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" to the anthemic "You've Got a Friend."

King, one of the most celebrated singers and songwriters of all time, has had a musical career spanning decades. She has had more than 400 songs recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in more than 100 hit singles. She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, becoming the first person to be inducted separately as a songwriter and a performing artist.

"'Beautiful' is really about Carole’s early career, and centers around her life and marriage with Gerry Goffin and their writing partnership," said Titusville Playhouse's executive and artistic director, Steven J. Heron.

"The show goes to the success of 'Tapestry,' but you also hear and see many hits that everyone knows written by Carole King, yet performed by other artists."

In Titusville Playhouse's production, Kaitlyn Jackson steps into King's shoes. Heron praised Jackson's ability to capture King's essence both vocally and emotionally, saying those were qualities he looked for when casting the role.

"The most important thing for me in all casting is the voice," Heron said.

"Secondly, we focused on the vibe," he said. "I have seen [Carole King] on so many interviews and she is just a real person. Someone who you could meet on the street and say 'hey' to. I was looking for that unassuming quiet with the powerful stage presence and the voice."

The show isn't just a trip down memory lane; it's a celebration of resilience, friendship and an artist who left an indelible mark on the world of music. Heron believes the story will inspire audiences.

"The journey and life of Carole King is so amazing, and the obstacles she overcome," he said.

The heart of "Beautiful" lies in its ability to transcend generations. The music bridges the gap between those who grew up with the songs and a new audience discovering them for the first time. Fans of King's soulful tunes are in for a treat, and newcomers are in for a crash course in the soundtrack of a generation, including classics like "Natural Woman," "It's Too Late," and, of course, "Beautiful."

"The music is most assuredly going to be a huge hit with the audiences," Heron said. "I know I go home every night and can’t stop humming songs from the show. I think people will be surprised at the music at how great and timeless it is."

Heron takes pride in bringing the show to Brevard audiences.

"'Beautiful: The Carole King Musical' has not been performed in the Central Florida area except for Dr. Phillips and the national tour," he said. "We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to be one of the first theatres in the country to do the show and that is exciting in its own right."

"Getting to bring this legend of a show and a legend of a singer to Central Florida is an honor and privilege."

It's a musical journey you won't want to miss.

Carole King, James Taylor Perform ‘You’ve Got a Friend,’ ‘It’s Too Late,’ ‘Sweet Baby James’ in New Concert Doc Trailer

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Carole King and James Taylor perform their own hits — alongside harmonizing on each other’s songs — in the new trailer for concert documentary Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name . The film premieres on Jan. 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET via CNN and will livestream via CNNgo. It will be available on demand from Jan. 3 through Jan. 9 via cable and satellite providers, CNNgo, and CNN mobile apps.

The exclusive trailer includes archival photos from the first time they performed together in 1970 at the storied Troubadour, alongside King and Taylor being interviewed in July 2021 at the Southern New Hampshire University Arena in Manchester. The clip features setlist highlights from their 2010 Troubadour reunion tour, where they duet “It’s Too Late,” “Sweet Baby James,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” King also delivers “So Far Away” and Taylor performs “Fire and Rain.”

Directed by Frank Marshall and commissioned by CNN Films and HBO Max, the documentary showcases previously unseen performance footage from their 1970 Troubadour concert debut, the pair reprising that show for the West Hollywood venue’s own 50th anniversary in 2007, and several full song performances from their 2010 reunion tour.

The documentary’s new interview with King and Taylor, coupled with their performances, highlight the camaraderie and chemistry radiating from their enduring music and lifelong friendship. They reflect on their collaborative relationship and share several stories about their songs, including “You’ve Got a Friend.” In the film, King explains the song “purely came through me.” Taylor first heard King play the then new song at soundcheck before their debut Troubadour show together, and they share how he came to cover it. Band members of the Section — Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, and Lee Sklar — who backed the duo through all three concert eras are also interviewed, along with insight from musician/producer Peter Asher.

FEATURING YOUR FAVOURITE HITS FROM THE 60s AND 70s!

A brand new production of the Award-Winning West End and Broadway show, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is on a UK tour in 2022.

Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit song-writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.

Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman , Take Good Care of My Baby , You’ve Got a Friend , So Far Away , It Might as Well Rain Until September , Up on the Roof , and The Loco-motion .

“One of the most amazing catalogues of pop music ever written. It was beautiful!” Elaine Paige, BBC Radio 2

“a tapestry of greatest hits” the guardian.

James Taylor talks koalas, the 'gravitational attraction' of touring and Taylor Swift

is carole king on tour

It’s nearly midnight in Australia when James Taylor pops onto the screen , casual in a T-shirt and omnipresent baseball cap.

He’s in the midst of a tour of the country – which he’s visiting for the first time in seven years – and indulges immediate questions not about his legendary career, mellifluous songs, or his upcoming U.S. tour. It's about koalas.

A photo on his Instagram page showcased the soft-spoken Taylor cuddling a native marsupial and he was, indeed, smitten.

“They give off a very calm vibe,” Taylor says. “They’re lovely little critters, and they eat one food. One plant. That’s it. It’s very dialed down.”

Given the soothing tone of so many of Taylor’s staples – “Fire and Rain,” “Your Smiling Face,” “How Sweet It Is” and his signature rendition of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” – it’s not surprising he found a kindred spirit in a placid (this one, domesticated) koala.

Taylor and his All-Star Band will leave Oz for a summer run in America, starting May 29 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and traveling through cities including Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, Denver and Lenox, Massachusetts, for 50 th anniversary performances July 3-4 at Tanglewood.

The gregarious Taylor , 76, happily eschewed sleep to talk about the “gravitational attraction” of touring, what music he turns to for comfort and the “little scraps of music” that will likely morph into songs for his next album.

Question: When “American Standard” came out in 2020, you became the first act to have a Top 10 album in each of the last six decades and it won your sixth Grammy. Does it stun you when things like that happen at this stage of your career? Answer : Yeah, to me it feels like just continuing and carrying on. I feel as if I’m always in the process of learning how to do this, how to make records, how to tour and how to best do this kind of work and live this kind of life. The unusual thing is it’s been so consistent. Partially when something works, you don’t tend to change it. My evolution has been slow and steady.

On that album, you tackled songs from the American standards canon. Is there another period of music that you would like to do? I keep recorded notes, little scraps of music and ideas and when I get into a pre-writing phase, I’ll start pushing those around. And I’m due for one of those sessions. I’d like to think there is another batch of songs in there. And of course, it used to be that musicians like me, composers like me, would write in batches of 10 or 12 songs and that would make up an album. But now it’s altogether possible to work up five or six songs and let that be it. It’s funny – it used to be that a record deal was necessary to have a career and you used to do all you could to get in the door. Now it’s easy to get in the door, but once you walk through, there are a million people in the room.

I think most people would say they find comfort in your music. What or who do you listen to for comfort? My comfort music is still Brazilian music. I love choral music and since I met (wife) Kim, I’ve had a renewed exposure to classical music and that was an eye-opener for me too. I still have my old favorites that I still love to pieces, Ray Charles is still my favorite, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin , Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt. I love salsa and Eddie Palmieri and the Cuban musician Arsenio Rodríguez. I’m still very connected with the musicians who influence me. I happened across a great record the other day by The Coasters – “Shopping for Clothes.” It’s fantastic.

With this tour coming up, do you have to psych yourself up to go on the road or is it just part of your DNA? I think both. It’s familiar. I feel the gravitational attraction of a tour and feel it grab hold. As I approach it, there is some anxiety and you need to prepare yourself physically and emotionally for it. I work on my voice for about a month ahead of time. I’ll pick up my guitar and start playing every day and try to get my chops and technique back and then we start looking at the set and how we might want to change it from the last time we played that city.

Have you ever had a conversation with Taylor Swift about her being named after you?

Yeah, I met her perhaps it was 15-16 years ago. We did a benefit for (the Candie’s Foundation), an organization that tries to help with teenage pregnancy, and it was interesting. We were both just there with guitars and played a couple of songs. I was performing with my wife and may have had a friend of ours playing cello and Taylor was there just playing by herself. She was just a teen. She told me she had listened to my music a lot and that her folks had named her with me in mind.

More: Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant, even the 15 surprise songs

I know you had a documentary with Carole King a couple of years ago (“Just Call Out My Name”). But will we ever see a definitive James Taylor documentary? I did an autobiographical piece for Audible (“Break Shot: My First 21 Years”) a few years ago and it covers my experience up until getting signed with Apple and then moving on to Warner Bros. It’s just an audiobook, really. I sort of feel as if everything after that has been so public that there is nothing left to share.
