Caribbean Holidays

Coconuts dry on sun-drenched sands, cocktails come with a dash of spice and tiny islands make you feel away from it all on our Caribbean holidays

Imagine bright blue seas dotted with luxury yachts, gemstone green forest covering miniature specks in the ocean and islands where you can hike, dive and lie on white-sand beaches all on the same day. Holidays to the Caribbean and Mexico have you swinging in hammocks over bleached out sands and waking up on white-canopied beds where waves practically lap at your feet.

We love the romance of sailing Antigua’s clear-as-glass waters, the teak wood beachfront villas at Ian Fleming’s former estate, Goldeneye, and the flushed excitement of hiking St Lucia’s volcanic cones to the summit of the Pitons. There’s natural eye candy everywhere – an archipelago of white, blue and green, cascades of waterfalls, pools and spice and that extraordinary 14-mile Providenciales barrier reef where ultramarine fish breeze beneath the sea.

Tiny jewel-like islands have you enjoying ackee and saltfish beach shack lunches on weather-beaten couches by the shore before decadent white-gloved service of Champagne and oysters beneath a scarlet sun, and lavish resorts take you on once-in-a-lifetime rides through underwater worlds and beachfront as private chefs deliver fresh caught lobster and rum punch to your terrace. There are Caribbean and Mexico holidays for every whim – places made for snorkelling, swimming and diving, exotic escapes on beaches strung together by coconut trees and endless adventure in see-through kayaks or under the roof of steamy rainforest.

Call into your local Kuoni store and, over a glass of Champagne, we’ll match you with your perfect Caribbean and Mexico holiday destination.

Wooden pier to a tropical beach, with colourful hits at sunset, Saona island, Dominican Republic

Whether it’s rum and cigars, sun and surf or dining and dancing, nowhere does good vibes quite like the Caribbean.

A mojito or a pina colada? Reggae beats or salsa rhythms? Trekking across volcanoes or relaxing with sand between your toes? These are the only questions you need to answer while kicking back on the brilliant beaches of the Caribbean. Spend days taking in the tropical sun from white sand beaches or wading under the clear blue water while snorkelling for marine life. Fill the nights with food and music, eat fresh fish and jerked chicken, listen to Bob Marley and dance the cha-cha (though maybe not all at once).

What countries are in the Caribbean?

The countries that are in the Caribbean are:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Dominican Republic
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

What is the weather like in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean is mostly known for its warm, tropical climate. It does, however, have an alternate rainy season that brings tropical showers from around May to November every year. This time of year is known as the wet or summer season because temperatures will get to their yearly peak around July/August and the rainfall will get to its highest monthly average.

There is intense humidity from May to October for most of the region, with tropical storms and hurricanes typically occurring from June to November.

As the Caribbean is an island region, expect moderate to intense windy conditions all year.

Aside from the wet season, the temperatures remain pretty constant throughout the year. Daily highs are likely to sit between 28-32ºC and lows can range from 22-26ºC.

The dry season is from December to April however, the seasons can differ depending on the region in the Caribbean.

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?

The best time to visit the Caribbean is from December to May for the dry season.

The busiest time of year falls during the months of February and April as the northern hemisphere's winter temperatures and school holidays coincide, bringing in many sun-chasing visitors.

If you're looking for a quieter time, avoid the major holidays and look to go around April before the dry season ends but tourist numbers have lessened.

With tropical storms and the hurricane season starting from May and running to November, it can be riskier travelling to the Caribbean during the wet season. However, because the weather deters many travellers, it means fewer people around.

Storms and hurricanes are most likely to occur from June to November while the rest of the wet season can have sudden, intense downpours and rained-out days. But not all places will get as much wet weather as others, so it's worth doing a bit of research before you plan.

Do I need a visa to travel to the Caribbean?

Whether you need a visa for the Caribbean will depend on your passport, the length of your stay and the countries you are visiting. For many travellers, including those with a UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport, you may need to pay an entry tax or a visa waiver fee or purchase a tourist card for countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic. Many countries in the Caribbean may allow foreign travellers to enter as long as they are only staying for a certain amount of time. This can change depending on the country visited and your nationality. Certain countries may also have a fee to extend your stay. Countries that may not require a visa for entry may still require each traveller to have a return or onward ticket.

If you are visiting the Caribbean, make sure you have thoroughly checked the entry and exit requirements specific to your nationality and make sure you do this for each destination you are travelling to or transiting through.

See visa travel advice for travellers from  Australia , the  United States , the  United Kingdom ,  Canada  and  New Zealand .

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in the Caribbean?

Tipping in the Caribbean is typically done at the discretion of the individual. If no gratuity has been added to the check, it's customary to add about 10-15% minimum.

Generally, tips are given to bellhops, housekeeping and room service. You may also tip bartenders, spa workers, barbershops, taxi drivers and waiters, it's up to you.

What is the internet access like in the Caribbean?

Internet access in the Caribbean is usually accessible, especially in the tourist areas.

Restaurants and venues may even have their own wi-fi for guests to use; sometimes, this may be for a small fee.

Can I use my mobile phone while in the Caribbean?

You can use a mobile device in the Caribbean. However, some areas, mainly rural and remote island areas, may not have coverage.

Several destinations also have local phones you can rent during your stay, while in other areas, the roaming function on your own device will work to keep you connected. However, ensure you've turned on global roaming before leaving your home destination. If you intend to activate global roaming while in the Caribbean, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in the Caribbean?

Toilets in the Caribbean are typically western porcelain flush toilets. Some locations, specifically remote away from major hubs, may use a toilet hose or even a pit latrine if there is no indoor plumbing. You may need to pay to use toilets while travelling in the Caribbean and sometimes toilet paper isn't supplied - so it's a good idea to carry small change and toilet paper while out.

Also, keep an eye on whether you can flush toilet paper, as in some countries, you may not be able to.

Can I drink the water in the Caribbean?

Some countries in the Caribbean do have safe tap water, however, it may be chlorinated and cause stomach upsets.

Countries where tap water is not safe to drink include:

  • the Dominican Republic

Tap water safety can also vary within countries depending on if you are outside the tourist regions. For this reason, it's not advisable to drink water from the tap in the Caribbean.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available.

It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in the Caribbean?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in the major tourist hubs in the Caribbean. Most countries will also have sufficient ATM access in these popular areas, however, they can sometimes be unreliable.

It's advised to carry cash when visiting more remote islands and destinations just in case card payments are not accepted.

What public holidays are celebrated in the Caribbean?

With so many countries and territories in the Caribbean, public holidays can vary from island to island. Many of these countries include Christian holidays in their calendars, as well as some more regional celebrations like Carnival.

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 7 Apr: Good Friday*
  • 10 Apr: Easter Monday*
  • 1 May: Labour Day*
  • 29 May: Whit Monday*
  • 8 Jun: Corpus Christi*
  • 25 Dec: Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec: Boxing Day

Carnival celebrations 2024/2025

  • Feb: Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and the Dominican Republic
  • Apr: Jamaica
  • Jul: St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Cuba
  • Aug: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Grenada

These dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays for a full list.

Is the Caribbean safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Homosexuality is illegal in several Caribbean countries with imprisonment used as punishment for some homosexual acts. These countries include Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. In these countries, a high amount of discretion is recommended for LGBTQIA+ travellers.

While the other countries in the Caribbean have made homosexuality legal, the general attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community in this region are still conservative. It is recommended not to show public affection while travelling in this region as public affection can be uncommon, even among opposite-gender couples. Stigma still remains in some parts of the culture of this region, especially in rural areas. It is strongly advised that LGBTQIA+ travellers be discreet and mindful of local attitudes so as to avoid negative attention.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

TAKE ME THERE

uk tour operators caribbean

In 1979 we organised our first holiday to the island of Jamaica , and we have never looked back. Our love affair with this beautiful part of the world continues and our small, friendly team takes an enormous pride in sharing it with you. The enchanting atmosphere of Barbados  lends itself to a truly tropical holiday with a relaxed, yet elegant feel. Or, for romantic mountain scenery and magical resorts, picturesque Saint Lucia is the island for you. Antigua  sets the gentle rhythm for a laid-back escape, but for an island pulsing with life and love, Jamaica  really has it covered. If you dream of dancing to a calypso band on the beach or swimming under a romantic rainforest waterfall, Grenada  will provide a stunning backdrop. Equally, the outstanding natural beauty and private island retreats of St Vincent & The Grenadines ,  The British Virgin Islands and Turks & Caicos qualify each as an unforgettable host for your perfect getaway. For a great all-rounder, the Dominican Republic offers breathtaking natural panoramas and a multitude of land and watersports, as well as providing unbeatable value for money.

Six Senses Zighy Bay is actually closer to Dubai than Muscat and so offers a great twin centre option, with the bustling city life and shopping of Dubai a complete contrast to the secluded retreat feel of Zighy Bay

We love the Beachfront Pool Villas for their uninterrupted sea views and direct access to the golden sands

Food here is a serious affair. Have dinner at Sense on the Edge, located high in the mountains, for a meal to remember with breathtaking views, and afterwards relax with a cocktail under the stars

Tours to the Caribbean

Ways to explore caribbean, discover our caribbean tours.

The Caribbean way of life is laid-back and easygoing. Take some time out and switch off with a small group tour to the Caribbean.

Relax on pristine white-sand beaches and dance the night way in the streets of Havana on our  Cuba small group tours . Renowned for its colonial grandeur, retro Cadillac cars, lively salsa music and spicy rum cocktails, a trip to Cuba will transport you into a bygone era full of zest and laid-back charm. Head out into the lush plains of Topes de Collantes Nature Reserve Park to camp in the wilderness under the stars, and pedal into the Viñales Valley to visit vast coffee and banana plantations.

The Caribbean island of  Jamaica  may be well known for its beach resorts, but our small group Jamaica discovery tours take you away from the tourist hot-spots to show you a more authentic side of this tropical paradise. Explore the lush forests of the Blue Mountains National Park, swim in the secluded turquoise waters of Frenchman’s Cove and savour locally-cooked jerk chicken washed down with a bottle of Jamaican Red Stripe beer.

Are you interested in taking a Caribbean cruise but want to know more? Keep reading to discover all the information you need. You'll learn about the best parts of a Caribbean cruise and the ports you'll visit.

The highlights of a Caribbean Cruise

Natural scenery.

There is a reason the Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world; the natural scenery. Whether you're scuba diving amidst vibrant coral reefs and turquoise waters or experiencing some of the Caribbean Islands’ many national parks, you're sure to be blown away. Even a lazy beach day will be spent in some of the best scenery in the world.

Unforgettable Cuisine

The amazing cuisine is another highlight of the Caribbean. As you travel from island to island, you'll be able to experience a tapestry of flavour. From seafood delicacies to richly spiced dishes and fresh fruits, there is plenty to enjoy. From jerk chicken in Jamaica to tacos in Mexico, your stomach will thank you for a Caribbean cruise.

Vibrant Culture

The colourful Caribbean culture is as loud as it is proud. Each port will have its own identity, and from lively music to historical landmarks, there will be plenty to explore. Gain a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the Caribbean as you cruise, and embrace the warmth and hospitality that defines the stunning region.

Where can you visit on a Caribbean Cruise?

Our Caribbean cruises from the UK allow you to enjoy a wealth of amazing tropical destinations, including the Azores, Barbados, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, St Lucia, St Kitts, St Maarten, Tobago and more. Learn more about what to expect from three of the highlights below.

Is there a place that encompasses everything the Caribbean has to offer better than Barbados? We’re not sure. As well as perfect beaches, amazing food and a warm welcome, Barbados offers history by the bucketload.

Bridgetown, the island’s capital, is the perfect place to look for some Caribbean history. Here, you’ll find amazing and informative museums and ex-military complexes now open to the public. From the Garrison to the Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, those looking for the story of Barbados can learn it here.

Cuba is one of the world's most unique countries. As soon as you step foot off the ship, you'll be taken back in time. Around you, you'll see traditional baroque architecture with a tropical twist. And the roads light up with brightly coloured, classic cars.

Cuba is known best for two things: its rum and its cigars. Those with an interest in either should visit a cigar store or distillery. There, they can purchase authentic souvenirs to enjoy once they return to the UK.

Dominican Republic

The white sandy beaches and swaying palms of the Dominican Republic are sure to entrance every visitor to its shores. Here, you'll be able to enjoy the picture-perfect Caribbean shore day.

If you are looking for something more than a day on a white sand beach, we suggest going inland. A quarter of the Dominican Republic is made up of protected national parks, home to animals, including the iconic iguana. Or, nature lovers can enjoy marine life in the surrounding waters, including whales, dolphins and manatees.

Cruise to the Caribbean from the UK

If you aren’t a fan of flying, you’ll be pleased to know that all of our Caribbean cruises depart from the UK. This means you don’t need to worry about airport queues, luggage restrictions or long journeys before your holiday even begins.

Our no-fly cruises depart from eight regional ports in the UK, allowing you to experience exciting cruise destinations from much closer to home. Whether you are looking for cruises from Liverpool or cruises from Belfast , Ambassador can help.

Why cruise with Ambassador?

We are Britain's newest cruise line and aim to combine an authentic cruise experience with a modern twist. For cruise lovers, Ambassador will feel like home, offering everything you’ve come to expect from a cruise holiday.

We're passionate about sustainability. Both of our cruise ships - Ambience and Ambition - are built to be as ocean-friendly and globally conscious as possible. And we partner with charities, including ORCA , to help preserve the amazing marine life that makes our oceans so special.

LEARN MORE : Our Sustainable Efforts Uncovered

Become a part of our family when you cruise with us. You will be welcomed aboard by our incredible team, enjoying the warmest welcome at sea. From our show team, who put on West End quality shows every night, to our check-in team, every member of our crew is proud to help you enjoy an unforgettable holiday.

The Caribbean isn’t our only cruise destination. If you’re looking to enjoy something far from home, then our World Cruises are unbeatable, stopping at locations like Singapore , South Africa and New Zealand. Or, why not consider colder climes and chase the Aurora Borealis on a Northern Lights Cruise ? Stay even closer to home and learn about the amazing locations on your doorstep with our British Isles Cruises . The choice is yours.

Caribbean travel guide

T here are three factors to consider when choosing your  Caribbean holiday : weather, cost and crowds.

The weather in the Caribbean is generally best – namely driest, with low humidity and pleasantly cool nights – December through to April. Summer and autumn are stickier, a few degrees warmer and wetter: showers and short, heavy downpours are common, prolonged spells of constant rain less so. June to November is also the official hurricane season. Statistically, September, followed by October, are the months you’re most likely to encounter a major storm such as Hurricane Matthew, which caused devastation in parts of the region, including Haiti, in October 2016. However, even in these months the odds are slim. It partly depends on which island you go to, as some are more hurricane-prone than others - see  stormcarib.com .

Belize

In terms of cost, mid-December to mid/late April is peak season in the Caribbean, and hotel (and villa) rates are 20-50 per cent higher then than the rest of the year. For travel during any school holiday period, you’ll pay a premium for flights.

As for crowds, hotels are fullest and the beaches most crowded in the peak winter months, especially Christmas/New Year, February and Easter. September and October are the quietest months, when some hotels and restaurants close, and bars can be near empty.

Taking into account the weather, cost and crowds, May is an ideal month to visit. The weather then is often almost as good as in the peak winter months, but accommodation costs significantly less. For similar reasons, the first half of December is also a good time to travel. If you’re tied to the school holidays and intent on keeping costs down, consider travelling over May half term, when flights can work out cheaper than other school holiday periods. If you want to go in the school summer holidays, note that fares tend to drop in late August.

  • What's new in the Caribbean?

The islands

Click on the links below to read about individual islands. We have detailed expert guides on Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Nevis, St Kitts and St Lucia, and for the other islands and island groups, we have summarised their appeal, indicated what they are best for, and given pointers on when to consider visiting. Bear in mind that the advice on when to go, above, applies across the Caribbean.

Anguilla Antigua Bahamas Barbados British Virgin Islands Cayman Islands Cuba Dominica  Dominican Republic Dutch Caribbean French Caribbean Grenada Jamaica Montserrat Nevis Puerto Rico St Kitts St Lucia St Vincent and the Grenadines Trinidad and Tobago Turks and Caicos US Virgin Islands

Booking advice

The two main airlines flying from the UK to the Caribbean islands are British Airways ( ba.com ) and Virgin Atlantic ( virgin-atlantic.com ). Depending on the island, economy tickets start at around £450-500 return: watch out for the airlines' irregular but frequent sales. For travel at peak times such as school holiday periods, you will almost certainly have to pay several hundred pounds more. It’s well worth contacting a good flight specialist such as Trailfinders ( trailfinders.com ) or DialAflight ( dialaflight.com ) to help find best fares and most convenient routes.

Note that some "direct" services in fact involve a brief stop en route at another island – for example, British Airways’ flights to St Kitts go via Antigua. Though you don’t need to leave the plane, this arrangement can add at least an hour to the overall journey time, so before booking check if the service is non-stop or not.

D7K154

Charter airlines Thomas Cook ( thomascookairlines.com ) and Thomson ( thomson.co.uk/flights ) – also fly to some islands, sometimes from regional UK airports. Their seat-only fares can be lower than with the scheduled carriers, particularly for last-minute bookings.

To reach some lesser islands, and for multi-centre trips, you usually need to take an inter-island flight. Liat ( liat.com ) is the main, but not always reliable, carrier. There are a number of other small, regional airlines – tour operators can advise about options. Inter-island flights are not cheap, so to keep costs down choose an island to which you can fly direct.

For advice on how to reach specific islands, click through on the links above to the islands' individual guides.

Tour operators

Booking a package to the Caribbean is likely to work out cheaper than arranging the same trip independently, and you’ll have back up should things wrong (think hurricanes). Most Caribbean hotels can be booked with at least several, and sometimes many, tour operators, so shop around: package prices can vary a lot, and deals at hotels such as seven nights for the price of five are rarely unique to a particular operator.

Acommodation

The Caribbean offers an immensely varied choice of places to stay. Hotels range from large all-inclusive complexes to intimate, and sometimes luxurious, beachfront properties and plantation inns.

Tour operators feature most of the best properties. But many islands also have lots of small, inexpensive hotels and guesthouses that do not feature in most tour operators’ portfolios. Find them on tourist board websites, and on  charmingescapescollection.com  for Anguilla,  intimatehotelsbarbados.com , and  jewelsofthebvi.com  for the British Virgin Islands.

Staying in locals’ homes is also possible on some islands. The best source is Airbnb ( airbnb.co.uk ) - check the reviews from previous guests before booking; for Cuba also see  cubacasas.net .

Villas can be rented on many islands, and smarter ones come with a housekeeper and sometimes other staff. Villa specialists covering the Caribbean include CV Villas (020 7563 7906; cvvillas.com ), James Villa Holidays (0800 074 0122; jamesvillas.co.uk ), Prestbury Worldwide Resorts (01625 858158; prestburyworldwideresorts.co.uk ), Red Savannah (01242 787800; redsavannah.com ) and Wimco (0870 850 1144; wimco.com ). For direct bookings, turn to airbnb.co.uk or homeaway.co.uk, which feature thousands of villas and apartments across the region, many with useful reviews from previous guests. A good option for families is renting a villa or apartment in a hotel, giving you spacious accommodation combined with facilities such as restaurants and watersports; tour operators offer the best of these properties.

For several reasons, the Caribbean is the world’s premier holiday spot for cruising. The weather is generally hot and sunny. You can visit half-a-dozen islands in a week – extensive, DIY island hopping in the Caribbean is not that easy or cheap, making a cruise definitely the best way to see a lot of the region in one go. On-shore activities are enormously varied, ranging from sightseeing in colonial cities to zip-lining over rainforests, climbing up waterfalls, snorkelling with stingrays and trying out all sorts of other watersports. Or you can just chill on a beach – several cruise lines include in their itineraries a stop at their own, private tropical island. The choice of non-cultural excursions makes Caribbean cruising an ideal option for families.

As for possible downsides, many Caribbean cruising itineraries visit a port most days, so there’s often little daytime at sea relaxing. Cruise-ship passengers can swamp the ports they visit. And while independent exploring is easy on stops on Mediterranean cruises, in the Caribbean transport is usually required to reach key sights, so many passengers sign up for expensive, organised excursions.

Cruise zipline Caribbean

There are three cruising areas in the region: the Eastern Caribbean, typically including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and, for Florida departures, the Bahamas; the western Caribbean, taking in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Mexico; and the Southern Caribbean, visiting southerly Windward Islands and the Dutch Antilles.

Cruise-and-stay packages are worth considering. Many cruises set off from Florida, but Barbados is also an important embarkation point. There are also good-value repositioning cruises in the spring and autumn, crossing the Atlantic by sea one way, flying the other.

You can cruise in the Caribbean year round. The weather is best December-April, the peak season, though ports are busiest then, and prices are lower at other times of year. If you go in the hurricane season (especially September and October), there is a chance that your ship will have to change its itinerary to avoid storms. Royal Caribbean will ‘always invest’ in trade, Utopia of the Seas guests told

Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Michael Bayley reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to the trade during a press conference on new ship Utopia of the Seas.

Asked whether debts within the cruise industry had the effect of hampering investment in the trade, Bayley said Royal Caribbean International was “always willing to invest”.

“We’ve been steady all along with our commitment to the trade – we’ve never walked away from that,” he added, giving the example of support issued during the pandemic.

Meghan Trainor named as Utopia of the Seas godmother

Interest-free loans totalling $75 million were distributed to trade partners to help them through that period, he said, despite Royal Caribbean International’s lack of revenue and high expenses.

All of the loans have since been paid back, he added, signalling the strength of the relationship with the trade.

Giving his review of Utopia of the Seas, Bayley said: “We feel this product is perfect for families – particularly young families – and I feel it’s going to do a great job.”

He highlighted Royal Caribbean International’s private island in the Bahamas as among the most significant features of Utopia of the Seas sailings.

“Once you’ve been to Perfect Day, you’re going to be sold on the experience,” he said.

The cruise line has been successful at growing the number of multigenerational families coming on board, Bayley said, while ‘new to cruise’ customers are viewed as especially likely to be attracted to the line’s new ship.

“It’s giant for new to cruise. The percentage of new to cruise that will sail on Utopia is fantastic,” said Bayley.

He added that Utopia of the Seas was the first Oasis Class ship to be entered into the short-break market, which has traditionally been the preserve of older vessels.

Giving customers the chance to sail on a three or four-night trip is likely to prove popular with those who are more time-pressured, Bayley suggested.

“It’s no big deal to hop on a cruise on a Friday and be back in the office on Monday morning,” he said.

He anticipated that families would be interested in adding Utopia of the Seas sailings to holidays incorporating trips to Orlando-based theme parks.

“You can go to Disney, Universal, Perfect Day and Utopia,” he said. “What kid wouldn’t be happy with that?”

Looking to the future, Bayley said the development of Discovery Class ships was “really exciting” but he was unable to give further details at the moment.

Asked about cleaner fuels and other emissions-related initiatives, he said the line was committed to further investment.

As with Utopia of the Seas, all new ships would have hybrid capacity allowing them to run on liquefied natural gas, he said, while the line also supports efforts to allow for shoreside power connections.

What’s the best Caribbean cruise line for me?

Whether you're a family of four or a solo adventure junkie, the Caribbean has a cruise for you. Walter Bibikow / Getty Images.

It feels like just about everyone is headed on a cruise ship, and for good reason. There’s a real appeal to embarking on a getaway where your travel plans are already sorted; you only have to unpack once and arrive each morning in an exciting port of call.

Plus, new ships are rolling out incredible bells and whistles that push the limits of fun at sea (think indoor skydiving, roller coasters, and go-karts). At the same time, the cruise industry has shifted towards sustainable efforts that have emerged as fundamental to modern cruising.

Recent statistics from CLIA (the official Cruise Line International Association) show an increase of nearly two million passengers in 2023 (totaling 31.7 million) compared to pre-pandemic numbers in 2019.

And there’s no more popular cruising region than the Caribbean , where upwards of 37 cruise lines with 154 ships rove the idyllic paradise of islands. With so many options, sorting out which ship and itinerary fits you best can be confusing.

Here’s a handy guide to help determine which cruises are best for you, along with tips and advice to ensure you’re setting yourself up for a smooth sail.

Passengers relax as the Oasis of the Seas departs the Bahamas

What Caribbean cruise is best for me?

Sailing for adventure.

Whether you're into ziplining through the rainforest, scuba diving one of the world’s largest coral reefs or swimming at the base of a waterfall, cruises throughout the Caribbean offer excellent opportunities for adventure.

Cruise ports known for high-octane activities include St-Martin (known for its superb scuba diving), Belize (cave-tubing and ziplining throughout rainforest treetops) and St Lucia (the Sapphire Falls Hike).

Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America have cruises that frequent these ports.

Best ships for families

Look for larger ships with kid-friendly pools, expansive kids' clubs and family-friendly entertainment. Royal Caribbean’s fleet features action-packed decks great for families with water slides, laser tag and mini golf.

Disney Cruise Line’s fleet sails extensively throughout the Caribbean to ports that span from Cozumel , Mexico, to Willemstad , Curaçao. The line’s most common Caribbean offerings are shorter 3- and 4-night itineraries that are perfect for families looking for a short trip.

Cruise lines with private islands operate predominantly in the Bahamas , including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. These stops are great family destinations as they feature enclosed, private environments with kids' activities and the ease of charging everything to your sea pass card.

Singles at sea

Cruises can be an excellent place for singles to mix and mingle. A standard cruise stateroom rate is usually calculated at a minimum two-adult rate. Singles wishing to book a standard stateroom are typically charged a single supplement fee ranging from 50% - 100% of their base fare.

As the demand for single cruise accommodations grows, new ship builds include solo staterooms, both interior and with balconies. Look to Celebrity Cruises, Virgin Voyages, and Norwegian Cruise Lines for some of the best accommodations for solo travelers.

Most relaxing getaways

The most relaxing cruises sailing through the Caribbean tend to be the smaller ships focusing on a more “resort at sea” vibe. The higher-end ships with all-inclusive rates offer the luxury of seamless vacations. Windstar, Seabourn and Viking are the best lines for a relaxing cruise.

On these ships you’ll find daily activities that swap dance parties and poolside games for fitness-oriented activities like yoga and strength training classes, lectures on upcoming ports and ample lounge chairs to soak up the sun by the pool.

From your first step onboard, all your food and drinks (except for certain vintage wines and spirits), activities and sometimes your port excursions are included in your rate.

Itineraries like the Viking Ocean Cruises’ West Indies Explorer sail a 10-day itinerary roundtrip from San Juan, Puerto Rico, with stops that include Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Kitts, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Roseau, Dominica. Rates for Viking Ocean Cruises include one shore excursion per port.

The top of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a balcony looking down over a pool with people and lounge chairs.;

Best parties at sea

As the classic notion of cruising sunsets – goodbye white glove service, shuffleboard, Baked Alaska – a new era of fun is afloat.

Large ships are built to maximize fun, whether you're hopping pool parties, dancing the night away at late-night discos or cheering your team at rousing sports bars. Special interest cruises are also an excellent option for the most immersive fun at sea, whether that’s a full ship charter rock concert like the Rock Legends Cruise , a trip dedicated to Golden Girls fans , or an LGBTQ+ charter like VACAYA .

Favorite lines that feature an upbeat party vibe include Margaritaville at Sea (particularly on their new Islander), Virgin Voyages and Norwegian Cruise Line.

A quick getaway

You’ll find cruise lines are leaning into shorter itineraries that offer weekend getaways to nearby ports in the Caribbean. Most of these sailings are roundtrip from Florida’s top cruise ports: Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Orlando (Port Canaveral). These are often 3- and 4-night sailings featuring a stop in The Bahamas or Bermuda .

The vibe onboard is often more upbeat and celebratory, as guests do their best to maximize their limited time at sea.

A few favorite lines for this style of travel include Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean (who is launching Utopia of the Seas this summer as its first-ever large-scale ship that will exclusively sail short getaways) and Disney Cruise Line.

An extended journey through the Caribbean

Smaller cruise lines offer longer, extensive itineraries throughout the Caribbean; smaller ships can port far off the beaten path at more remote destinations. Itineraries like Seabourn’s “25-Day Captivating Antillean Treasures” sail to some of the lesser trafficked parts of the Caribbean including Marigot, St. Martin; Carambola Beach, Saint Kitts and Nevis; and Sopers Hole (Frenchmans Cay), BVI. Lines like Silversea, Windstar Cruises and Azamara are favorites that route to these idyllic destinations.

When should I go on my cruise?

There are sailings throughout the Caribbean year-round, with high season running from November through April. This period is known for its optimal sailing conditions and weather.

You’ll find cheaper sailings during the hurricane season, typically July through September, though you risk the chance of your trip being canceled or rerouted to avoid inclement weather.

Holiday sailings (particularly during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve) are also excellent times to sail as cruise lines curate impressive decor and holiday-themed activities.

How do I know if my cruise line is operating sustainably?

Conservation efforts have become a vital tenet of the future of cruising, with the industry gearing towards carbon-zero sailings by 2050 . Efforts underway include ship engines that run cleaner on alternative fuels, advanced wastewater systems that can better clean sewage water and exhaust gas cleaning systems to improve air quality at sea and in port.

Friends of the Earth’s Cruise Ship Report Card is a great resource to assess a ship’s sustainability efforts.

A few lines at the forefront of sustainable sailing include Ponant, Disney Cruise Line and Hurtigruten. Ponant recently became the first maritime cruise line to receive Green Globe certification, which recognizes the line’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.  The line has shifted away from heavy fuel oil and installed catalytic systems to reduce atmospheric emissions.

Disney Cruise Line aims to operate with carbon emissions at net zero by 2030, in part by shifting to alternative fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrotreated vegetable oil.

Hurtigruten is currently developing a zero-emission propulsion ship, which is aiming to be unveiled by 2030.

There are still a large number of travelers who oppose the notion of cruise ships for not only their impact on the environment, but on local economies as well. Groups like Friends of the Earth , CLIA and Oceana are excellent organizations devoted to regulating the cruise industry.

Need to know before you go

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when you’re booking a Caribbean cruise.

Book in advance...

Cruise lines offer better rates further from your sailing date, often making sailings available to book more than a year out. The earlier you book, the better the selection of staterooms to choose from.

Or take advantage of last minute deals

Cruise Plum is our go-to with a comprehensive overview of discounted inventories if you're angling for a last-minute getaway.

Opt for third-party travel insurance for hurricane season protection

Travel insurance is the best way to ensure smooth sailings on your Caribbean cruise. Typical cruise insurance rates hover around 5 to 10% of your total trip cost.

Don’t just opt into the cruise line’s designated insurance option; shop around on a platform like Squaremouth for the most value.

Look for a plan specific to cruise travel, with coverage that includes compensation for delays, cancellations (particularly helpful during hurricane season), emergency medical, and the premium option of canceling for any reason (CFAR).

Be hurricane-aware

Hurricane season in the Caribbean is typically July through September. The outlook for the 2024 season from NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season with the potential range of 8-13 hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph.

Cruise lines work expeditiously to avoid sailing into the path of any major tropical storm or hurricane, often rerouting or shortening itineraries as threats arise. Cruises rarely encounter major storms as they’re able to chart the course of the weather and route accordingly.

In the event you encounter a major storm while at sea, head to the middle of the ship where you’ll feel the rolling of the ship less, take over-the-counter aids like Dramamine or Bonine and keep your eyes on the horizon for stability balance.

You don’t necessarily need a passport

Passports are not required for closed-loop sailings that begin and end at a US port. All you need is a boarding pass, a government photo ID (if you’re 16 years or older) and a certified birth certificate or certificate of US naturalization.

However, keep in mind that you might not be able to disembark the ship at certain ports (those ports include Barbados , Martinique and St-Barthélemy ).

Third-party excursions can be a better value play

If you want to stretch your dollar further, consider booking with local tour operators before arriving at each port. It’s important to note that third-party excursions are the best when they’re morning-only activities.

The ship won’t wait for you if you’re late returning from a third-party excursion. For full-day excursions, consider the line’s offerings, as the ship will wait for you, and there’s nothing worse than missing the boat.
