A Travel Guide to Binondo- The World’s Oldest Chinatown

' src=

Offering a taste of China beyond the actual country, Binondo stands today as an iconic historical location holding the title of the oldest Chinatown in the world. If you’ve never heard of it or have and would like to know what the rustic district entails, then stay tuned as we’ll be unraveling the complete guide to the nostalgic side of Manila.

First, let’s go back in time to see how this place came to be.

A Brief History of Binondo

Binondo was born 425 years ago as a result of Spanish colonization of the district and Philippines in general. The invading government took occupancy of the walled city of Intramuros just across the river from Binondo with the latter growing to be a popular trading hub for Chinese merchants. These traders, who were already doing commerce in the area even before the colonization, were granted the land in Binondo in perpetuity under the conditions of restricted self-governing roles and tax exemption.

Governor Luis Pérez Dasmariñas of the ruling force also enforced the condition that although the town was set for Chinese immigrants, they had to accept Catholicism prior to gain living privileges there. Thus the region grew in both religion and Chinese heritage as a result with the Chinese intermarrying with the natives to give rise to the community of Chinese mestizo and the planet’s first chinatown in the Philippines.

Where it is and how to get there

Being one of the oldest settlements in the entire Metro Manila, Binondo finds itself deep within the urban jungle. The southern edge of its compact 166-acre area lies along a stretch of the Pasig river and extends to the north all the way to Recto Avenue. The Estero de la Reina, a locally-maintained creek covered by wild greenery, trails its way across and the town and along its eastern border.

places to visit in binondo manila

There are several ways to reach this famous district. Probably the cheapest means, if you don’t mind crowds, is by taking the city trains. If you are traveling via LRT line 1, drop off at Carriedo station and if you are on LRT line 2, you should get off at Recto station. From either station, Binondo is only a 10 to 15-minute walk. Another more costly option is to take a cab or rent a car with a driver.

For starters, we do not recommend that you drive a car going there. Not only because of the narrow streets and limited parking areas but the real chinatown experience is on foot. Better yet, once you are in the area, you will find that the way to get around is by horse-driven carriages called “Calesas” as opposed to jeepneys and taxis.

What to see

There’s certainly no shortage of intriguing features and the most visited include:

Binondo Church

The church was founded in 1596, two years after the granting of Binondo as a haven for Chinese immigrants who were politely requested to take up Christianity or risk death or imprisonment. That aside, this vibrant place of worship houses is visited by many religious and is still considered the center of town.

Just nearby is the quaint Plaza of San Lorenzo Ruiz which was built to commemorate one the most celebrated persons to have ever lived in Binondo. Lorenzo Ruiz was a chinese-filipino and is the country’s first ever saint.

Read our article listing down the  churches in the Philippines for visita iglesia .

Offering more in the way of religious options, Kuang Kong is a Buddhist temple that holds crucial chapters of the origins of the Chinese-Filipino. You can learn more on that as well as have your fate change, or so it’s said, and fortunes read in wooden, crescent half-moons. Another worth your time as well is the Seng Guan Temple in Nara Street.

Escolta Street

For more than a century, the street of Escolta was Manila’s center of commerce, the place of the country’s first ever cinema, ice cream shop, and more. In Spanish, Escolta means “to escort”, which is derived from the street’s history as the passage of dignitaries being escorted to Intramuros, the city’s old capital.

You are sure to fall in love with the 70s deco style architecture which tells the stories of yesteryears. Some of Escolta’s historic buildings include Natividad building, Regina building, the Capitol Theater, the First United Building, El Hogar, and the Don Roman Santos building which was originally built in 1894.

Notable events to keep in mind for the perfect Binondo trip

The Chinese New Year is certainly a date to mark on your calendar with this annual traditional festivity of dragon dances and fireworks a notable January to February highlight. If you do catch the New Year celebrations, it would be prudent to stick around for the interesting curtain-downing ceremony of the Lantern Festival.

places to visit in binondo manila

For some mid-year celebrations, the Hungry Ghost Festival (It’s exactly as it sounds) is sure to keep you occupied with ritual commemorations during a month where Buddhists believe the dead visit the living. Aside from sit-downs with relatives, you’d hoped to never see again, round fruits and moon cakes are also worth the attendance.

The Philippines hosts a bounty of different festivals all year round. You can check out our article of the must-see festivals in the Philippines  to find out more.

Chinatown shopping galore

Binondo is a place filled with cultural and historic treasures and of course: shops – lots and lots of shops. Stalls lineup the street of Ongpin availing gold and silver jewelry as well as chestnuts and sugarcanes if you’re into all that.

Spanish era cocoa and chocolate tablets can be sought at La Resurrection while various shops in the vicinity also sell lucky charms other and Feng Shui products.

Where to eat great food in Binondo

The gastronomy industry in the district is quite exemplary and is gaining credibility on an international scale with the sole reason of travel for many tourists being down to the food itself.

places to visit in binondo manila

You’ll find excellent Hokkien Cuisine- this being the most popular- at:

Dong Bei Dumplings

As their name would have it, unforgettable dumplings- a customary Chinese food- is the order of the day and reputably the best item on the menu.

Wai Ying Fastfood

You’ll get a taste of exquisite Chinese dishes here the most notable of which include Hakaw, Mami, and, of course, Dumplings.

Royal Garden

Look to this swanky restaurant for a share of exotic cuisines revolving around Shark’s Fin and Dim Sum.

Crepe de Chine

You’ll want to try their pasta and crepes because they are said to be out of this world.

Also, don’t forget to make time for some primordial tea at the Ying Ying Teahouse or the President’s Teahouse.

Where to stay

Nearby accommodation comes in the way of clean, comfortable suites and hotels such as:

Binondo Suite

Offering lovely three-star rooms, this suite is most desirable for its location at the heart of Chinatown.

Mabini Mansion Hotel

A kitchen comes with each of the 149 rooms available alongside amenities such as a telephone unit, a shower, air conditioning unit and a humble TV.

Manila Grand Opera Hotel

Built upon the former and similarly named theater, this is the place to be for an opulent pampering of lavishness.

The Bayleaf Hotel Intramuros

This boutique hotel is an award-winner of Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence as well as the Traveler’s Choice Award. It is located within the walls of Intramuros, just minutes away from Binondo.

Other great places to consider also include Ramada Manila Central, Manila Pavilion Hotel, Manila Hotel, the Red Planet Manila Binondo, Dela Chambre Hotel and Best Fortune Hotel.

Once you’re through with enthralling Binondo, nearby Intramuros also has just as much to offer presenting an excellent opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

Information about Binondo

Binondo

Up until now, the influence of Chinatown has reached several places across Manila including Quiapo, Santa Cruz, and San Nicolas. At present, Binondo is the usual site for Chinese occasions, especially Chinese New Year.

In 1594, a Spanish Governor named Luis Perez Dasmarinas founded Binondo for the settlement of Chinese immigrants who converted to Catholicism. The name “Binondo” was derived from the word "binundok" meaning mountain, referring to the place's hill-like feature.

The Chinese immigrants then decided to start their businesses in the area, eventually settling down in Binondo. Many Chinese settlers married Filipino locals, and they served as the connection between the local social culture and the Chinese business culture.

Aside from its business history, Binondo is also famous for its tourist attractions. The Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch is one of these attractions. The structure serves as a symbol of the strong relationship between the Chinese and Filipino.

Another highlight in the area is the Binondo Church which is also called as Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz and Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish. Founded in 1596 by Dominican priests, the church was built to serve the Chinese Catholics at that time. The rest of the attractions in Binondo include the Lucky Chinatown Mall, Ongpin Street, Kuang Kong Temple, and the Chinatown itself among others.

Binondo

How to get there

Binondo is strategically situated near the harbor centers, specifically the North Harbor, South Harbor, and Manila International Container Terminal, making it the center of commerce and trade in Manila. The best way to get to Binondo is by riding a bus, van, or tricycle.

Best time to visit

Binondo is best visited during Chinese New Year, but it is an all-year-round destination.

2.) Visit the Largest Chinatown Arch in the World

It is dubbed as the largest Chinatown Arch in the World, at 3.8-feet taller than the one found in Washington, DC. It is a testament of China-Philippines friendship amidst the rising tension on territorial disputes in West Philippine Sea. It was built for PHP22,500,000 (USD500,000) by the City of Guangzhou, China.

3.) Chinese Food Trip

You can find more authentic Chinese cuisines inside Binondo. So far we have dined in Eng Bee Tin where The Great Buddha is located, Sincerity Restaurant which boasts one of the most delicious fried chicken and El Presidente where a lot of big celebrities have dined since the 1970s. We are aiming to dine as well in Chuan Kee, the oldest fast food restaurant in Binondo but we always get impatient on the long queues. (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

4.) Picture Taking in Jones Bridge

The Jones Bridge showcases French Neoclassical Architecture and imitates one of the famous bridges you can only see in Paris. It was named after the United States legislator William Atkinson Jones who authored the Jones Law which gave the Philippines legislative autonomy from the United States. It was originally designed in the 1920’s by award-winning Filipino architect Juan M. Arellano. On the other side of the river, you will see another of Arellano’s master piece, The Manila Post Office. 5.) Visit Calvo Building

6.) Send your prayers in Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

Also known as Binondo Church, this church is patroned by the Philippines’ First Saint, Lorenzo Ruiz. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1987. In front of the church, you can buy candles depending on your wishes. I lighted orange for my success in pursuit in law school, white for world peace, green for very good health and money,  red for sustained passion, and pink for love and friendship. 7.) Santo Cristo de Longos Shrine

Somewhere in the corner streets of Binondo (Ongpin and Tomas Pinpin Streets), you will encounter this small chapel which seems to combine Confucian-Christian religions. Although there are Confucian items such as incense and jiaobei blocks, the appearance of that Cross is very much interesting. (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

There is nothing wrong to buy some lucky charms for your protection. I accompanied my office colleague Bijin from India in this shopping. Lucky Charms in Chinatown are much cheaper in price! (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

9.) Mourn and Take Action for this Dead River

This is called Binondo river. This is a testament of how irresponsible humans ruined the ecosystem of other living things. It is now colored black, stinky, and no signs of life.

How to Commute to Chinatown:

We chose the less-known route travelled by passengers going to Chinatown. Only few people know that the Pasig River Ferry offers you a shorter travel time without heavy traffic. Then again you really never found the heart of binondo, if you did, you'll find a store where the food is great, next would be the shop that is cooking fried siopao that really really good and doesn't need a sauce, hope next time you'd find both of them and not be disappointed :)

Exactly. It was our first time; we never got around much. We vowed to go back and explore Binondo more. Hope you can tell me where it is located. Or what the name of the store is.

Binondo will always be a familiar place to me. I'm sorry for your experience with that restaurant, in my opinion, you should have eaten in Eng Bee Tin instead! Their food is awesome and really satisfying!

I have never been in Manila, but planning to travel there one day. The mushroom ball soup looks great! I never tryed it and now I can't wait to taste it but need to find a good restaurant!

I have it when you have disappointing food when you visit somewhere new. Hope the rest of your visit was enjoyable though, it definitely looks like an interesting place. Rosie | www.rosieromance.com

it's great when you go exploring neighborhoods of your own city. Sorry to hear you are having problems with your camera, you should get it cleaned up, sometimes dust may be the problem. Those dumplings look great, they are one of my favorite asian foods.

Nothing better than steamed dumplings! I'm lucky that my mum is Chinese so I get to enjoy them at home all the time. I'm sure they're much more authentic in Asia though :)

It sucks that the dumplings was a disappointment but I hope you find your perfect dumpling soon. I love dumplings.

Manila has still really lots of real food to offer. Just look for the right place to buy. A big chinese influence indeed. The Mushroom ball soup is perfect for the rainy season. :)

It is indeed really nice to explore Manila every now and then. Manila Cathedral still remains as one of the most beautiful churches I have seen in Manila :)

Sounds like you had some frustrations with your camera and the food. The Manila Cathedral photo turned out beautifully though.

Wow, I had never heard of this place though I have heard og Manila many times before. Looks like you had a great time exploring this place. I particularly liked the photograph of the church.

I hate having bad experiences when I travel especially when it comes to restaurants :) But it seems like you had a good time anyway ! I never heard of that place by the way

I would love to visit Manila. I heard the food is great there. So sorry you did not have good experience with the food.

There are always these hidden gems placed in the heart of travelled cities. I've never heard of Binondo but it looks very pretty, hope to check it out on my future trips.

Yup, I've heard about them. I should try it there the next time I go to Binondo.

Yes, please include Philippines in your places-to-visit-soon list. :)

Yes, it was generally good.

Sadly, the camera had to retire. Bought a new one already. I love dumplings, too!

I'm sure the dumplings made by your mom are just as good. :)

I was just expecting too much maybe. Oh well, I can try other restaurants the next time I go there.

I couldn't agree more. :)

Oh, yeah. I love Manila Cathedral.

One of the few good photos that day. Glad I was able to get a good shot of it.

Yup, visit Manila soon!

Do check it out.

Binondo Food Tour: Best Recommended Places to Visit in Manila’s Chinatown

manila chinatown binondo ongpin street

The last time I went on a food tour in Binondo was when I was four months pregnant. We were back with another bunch of my sister’s friends last Saturday, when my son is already four months old. Yas! 🙂 We’re Binondo gals who were born and raised here, so we pretty much have already dined in every single restaurant in the area. I haven’t blogged a single post about restaurants in Binondo though, because I’ve already grown too accustomed and I never realized how special they would be for other people.

Nonetheless, arranging an itinerary for our Binondo food trip was easy. Instead of bringing our friends to each tried-and-tested place, we decided to bring and introduce them to our perennial favorites–some prominent and noteworthy destinations in Chinatown . We intended to dine in five restaurants, but our stomachs couldn’t take any more food, so after four hours of munching, we settled on four. 😛 Our experience was definitely fun like always, as we together explored our way through Binondo’s much-alive food scene.

1. The Great Buddha Cafe

2F UBE Tower, 628 Ongpin St, Binondo, Manila, 1006 Metro Manila Phone: (02) 288 8888, (02) 241 9999 Open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Great Buddha Cafe is very different from Buddha Bar in Makati , although both have “Buddha” in their names and a large statue of Buddha inside the restaurants. If you’re familiar with the original Eng Bee Tin store in Binondo, then you’ll find the wonderful cafe on the second floor interesting. The renovated place is now called the Grand Buddha Cafe, where mouthwatering Chinese food are served beside a souvenir shop selling trinkets of Filipino and Chinese culture. Soon, there will also be a museum showcasing the history of the famous hopia brand and the process on how hopia is made.

This was our first stop and our meeting place. The Great Buddha Cafe  is like a sister of Mr. Ube and Cafe Mezzanine. It has a modern ambiance, a casual setting housed in an expansive floor. Interior-wise, it’s a step up from a hole in the wall. We shared an order of xiao long bao (PhP 248, 10 pieces)–soup dumplings that burst in your mouth with a memorable explosion of flavor, especially when paired with the black vinegar and ginger condiment. We also tried stir-fried radish cake with pork floss (PhP 220). The nice golden crust was a delight to bite into!

Having a party at your house? The Great Buddha Cafe  is present in the Honestbee app or website, so you can enjoy great food delivered at your doorstep. To immerse in the full dining experience, visiting the place itself is more ideal of course.

2. Big Bowl Noodles

Address: 517 Yuchengco Street, Binondo, Manila Closes at 9 p.m. Phone: (02) 244 8755

Chinese noodles and noodle soups and classic small plates are what it’s about at this quaint stop. Fans excuse the nondescript decor and turn to this terrific under-the-radar food joint for the limited yet unique and exciting lineup of noodle specialties. With a low-key, mellow vibe, Big Bowl Noodles has no crazy waits and nice simple digs. We had Seafood Hofan (PhP 180) and also enjoyed the Sliced Beef Fried Noodles (PhP 170). These are two solid choices at a reasonable price.

3. Sincerity Café and Restaurant

Address: 497 Yuchengco Street, Binondo, Manila Phone: 241-9991, 241-9990 Open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sincerity Cafe and Restaurant is one of the oldest and most known restaurants in Binondo. Must-orders include the Sincerity Fried Chicken (PhP 180 half, PhP 360 whole) and Fried Oyster Cake (PhP 240 small, PhP 280 big). You can’t miss these when dining here! Sincerity Fried Rice (PhP 70 small, PhP 110) and Kikiam (PhP 60) are also your best bets.

Aside from these staples, this restaurant is cherished for adobo frog (PhP 320) and deep fried frog legs (PhP 320). Unfortunately, these were unavailable when we visited since they’re seasonal. Unlike Big Bowl Noodles, Sincerity can get really crowded and waits can be long at prime meal times, but it works well when you have a craving. It’s best to go with family and friends to soak up the vibrant and bustling mood and enjoy dining at the tables.

4. Wai Ying Fastfood

810 Benavidez Street Phone: 243-6665, 242-0310 Open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.

For our final dining stop, we visited Wai Ying Fastfood , saving the best for last. At any time and on any day, this place can be a madhouse packed with both tourists and locals alike. But be patient, the food is worth the wait! Wai Ying is one of the best restaurants in Chinatown and you don’t need to burn a hole in your wallet to enjoy delicious Chinese fare.

From dim sum to rice toppings and noodles, this two-story building with royal-blue walls doesn’t disappoint. It’s truly a magical pick when you’re looking to impress your guests. Order anything with confidence and you’ll nod with amazement in every bite. Elbow-to-elbow seating may be a downside, but the undeniably great food with intensely delicious flavors ensure everyone leaves happy. We ordered lemon chicken, hakaw (PhP 120), lava buns (PhP 90), fried mantou with condensed milk, milk tea jelly (PhP 85), and sugar cane juice (PhP 55).

5. Eng Bee Tin Mall and Flagship Store

Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli is the home of the BEST hopia, tikoy, and ube pao. It’s a grocery store along Ongpin that was established in 1912 and was reconstructed last year. It started as a simple stall, but now, the flagship store looks like a supermarket cafe. The sleek glass exterior allows customers to see the appealing shelves filled with recognizable hopia and tikoy variants.

Eng Bee Tin is known for innovative and exciting flavors of hopia like buko custard, mochaccino, and golden pork floss. Premium flavors of tikoy are for those with an adventurous palate. Ube, strawberry, butterscotch, sweet corn, pandan, and muscovado tikoy are all available in different sizes. It’s too easy to fill your shopping cart with all these delicious finds! I got frozen xiao long bao (PhP 120, 10 pieces), which my sister tried from here before. Let’s see if it also gets my nod of approval. 😛

Manila Chinatown is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Binondo, Manila. It is the oldest Chinatown in the world! For this reasons and many more, visitors flock here in droves. Despite its accessibility, it still can be hard to figure out where and what to eat. Each restaurant offers its own list of specialty dishes, so if you’re not content with one, it’s okay to move on and try another. 🙂

Things to See and Do in Chinatown, Binondo, Manila

Things to See and Do in Chinatown, Binondo, Manila

The center of Chinese life and culture in the Philippines since pre-colonial times, the Chinatown in Binondo, Manila marks the earliest trade relations of pre-Hispanic Filipino natives who dwelt along the Pasig River and Chinese traders who sailed along the South China Sea.

Before the Spaniard colonized the country, trade relations already existed between China and the Philippines, particularly in the coastal areas of the country’s 5 centers of trade, which include Manila. However, the Spanish colonization attracted more Chinese to migrate, viewing the colonial cities in Southeast Asia as business opportunities that were waiting to be exploited. They served as middlemen of business enterprises and a source of cheap labor—a reason why they are tolerated by the Spanish colonial government. However, they were segregated to an enclosed Chinese community, called “parian”, which became the Binondo area, which was supporting the bulk of the galleon trade. On March 28, 1594, Governor General Luis Perez Dasmariñas bought the area and gave the land to the Chinese for their settlement.

Things to See and Do

If you are planning to visit Manila , then you have to experience what the Chinatown in Binondo is all about. Here are what you can expect from the place:

Visit the Carriedo Fountain.

Located in front of the Santa Cruz Church and just a few meters from the Carriedo LRT station, this fountain was dedicated to Don Francisco Carriedo—the man responsible for the piped water system installed in the city.

Visit the Arch of Goodwill.

Leading to Ongpin Street, which is known for the many jewelry shops and restaurants, the Arch of Goodwill is one of the many arches that mark the boundary of Chinatown and is a landmark that commemorates the friendship between the Filipinos and the immigrant Chinese.

Browse the lucky charms at Feng Shui Store.

You will come across the Feng Shui Store just near the Goodwill Gate, which is a popular place for the local Chinese to buy their Yin Yang charms and Feng Shui items. The store is packed to the ceiling with a wide variety of items.

Eating along the Chinatown will be one big, tummy-filling, adventure you can do in the place. Here, you will find almost all Chinese cuisine, such as Shanghai food, Beijing delicacies, Cantonese meals, Fujian gastronomic delights and even Filipino offerings. Prices can range from very cheap to that rate fit for the emperor type.

Visit the Temple of the God of War, Kuang Kong.

You should visit the Temple of Kuang Kong, who is known by the Chinese as not only the God of War, but also Patron of Martial Arts and Scholars. This Buddhist temple is open to the public, where you can light incense sticks, put them in the urn at its entrance and say your prayers. Aside from this, there are also red wooden half moons that you can use to have your fortunes told.

Chinatown at Present

Chinatown in Manila is recognized as the oldest Chinese community in the world, with its restaurants, bazaars, quaint shops, streets and alleyways conveying the atmosphere of “little China”. Nowadays, it incorporates Filipino traditions after centuries of acculturation, that going to the place would mean more than just having a taste of Chinese tradition—it would be a tour into the Tsinoy’s past.

Top things to see in binondo chinatown, exploring manila's historic district as it continues to play a key role in the country's cultural growth., february 2, 2024.

Since its inception in 1594, Binondo, Chinatown remains a central part of Manila. Modern high-rises nestle closely with heritage buildings, giving the district a palpable sense of history. Widely recognized as the world’s oldest Chinatown, the Spaniards established Binondo as a settlement for Catholic Chinese. From Jones Bridge to Binondo Church, we explore the role it plays in our country’s cultural growth.

Located across the Pasig River from Intramuros, the walled city and seat of Spanish colonial power, Binondo served as a vital commercial hub, facilitating trade between the Chinese settlers and the Spanish colonists. This strategic move was aimed at converting the Chinese immigrant population to Christianity while also keeping them close for trade purposes.

A Melting Pot of Filipino, Chinese, and Spanish Culture

Welcome Arch to Manila's Binondo Chinatown lit up at night.

Over the centuries, Binondo evolved into a melting pot of Filipino and Chinese cultures. This shaped the community’s unique identity, and the district thrived as a center of commerce, finance, and trade. Its residents play a significant role in the economic development of Manila and the Philippines at large. Streets like Ongpin became synonymous with gold traders, while others specialized in goods ranging from traditional Chinese medicines to exotic food items. It’s since become a popular destination for adventurous foodies.

The area’s architecture reflects its rich history, featuring a mix of Spanish colonial buildings and Chinese shops. Religious structures like the Binondo Church symbolize the district’s Catholic heritage intertwined with Chinese influences.

Despite the challenges of modernization and urban development, Binondo has retained its vibrant character. It remains a bustling enclave where traditional practices coexist with contemporary lifestyles. Efforts to preserve its cultural and historical significance have gained momentum, recognizing Binondo’s role not just as a commercial center but as a living museum of Filipino-Chinese heritage. Today, it continues to attract visitors for its historical landmarks, culinary offerings, and the annual Chinese New Year celebration.

For architecture enthusiasts and cultural travelers, this area offers an array of sites that showcase its unique mix of colonial, Chinese, and modern Filipino architectural styles.

It’s fascinating to observe how Chinatown preserved its traditional essence while adapting to contemporary life. Old favorites like Salazar’s Bakery continue to thrive beside a sleek Apple Store. Traditional jewelers operate side by side with spiritual temples, further highlighting Chinatown’s unique ability to maintain its cultural heritage while embracing progress.

In celebration of the Chinese New Year, we explore Manila’s historic district that continues to play a key role in the country’s economic and cultural growth. Here are the top 8 architectural sites to see in Binondo, Chinatown.

1. Jones Bridge

The Jones Bridge, a neoclassical bridge with ornate street lamps linking Manila with Binondo Chinatown.

Originally named after William Atkinson Jones, the American legislator responsible for the Philippine Autonomy Act of 1916, Jones Bridge links Binondo with Central Manila. Designed in the neoclassical style by Juan Arellano, the same architect behind the Manila Central Post Office, it features ornate lamp posts, statues, and balustrades meant to evoke the charm and sophistication of European bridges.

The bridge had four statues called La Madre Filipina , representing Progress, Gratitude, Democracy, and Justice. During the bridge’s extensive renovation in recent years, efforts were made to restore these statues to their former glory. However, not all of the original statues remain on the bridge today. Two of the statues, representing Progress and Justice, now stand within the premises of the Court of Appeals in Manila.

The other two sculptures were restored to their original positions. The first of these statues is a replica, created to replace the original lost during World War II. The second statue was brought back from Rizal Park and reinstated on the bridge.

Today, Jones Bridge is both a functional piece of infrastructure and a popular photographic spot. It’s a poignant reminder of Manila’s resilience and heritage.

2. Ongpin Street

A Welcome Arch, or paifang, in Binondo Chinatown.

More than just a busy thoroughfare, walking through Ongpin Street is like traversing a living museum. Numerous historic shop houses combine residential and commercial spaces. These structures feature elements of Spanish colonial architecture, such as capiz shell windows, and Chinese influences, evident in their ornate facades and Feng Shui-inspired layouts. Their intricate exteriors, wooden shutters, and balconies speak of Binondo’s rich history and multicultural heritage.

The grand arch marks the entrance to Chinatown. It incorporates elements typical of traditional Chinese gates, welcoming visitors into the bustling streets of Binondo. Another popular fixture is the Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli, known for its traditional Chinese pastries. While the flagship store is a modern building, it still pays homage to its Chinese heritage through architectural details and color schemes, blending with the street’s historical context.

Just off Ongpin Street is the Carvajal Street Alley, a hotspot for local foodies. The architecture here is less about grand buildings and more about the intimate scale and utilitarian design. The market stalls and shops offer insights into the daily lives of the local community.

3. Seng Guan Temple

Aeria view of Seng Guan Temple in Binondo Chinatown.

As a symbol of the strong Buddhist faith within Binondo’s Filipino Chinese community, the Seng Guan Temple is notable for its traditional Chinese architectural designs, including ornate carvings, red pillars, and intricate dragon motifs. This temple is a peaceful sanctuary amidst the bustling district, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of Binondo’s residents.

4. Binondo Church

Aerial view of Binondo Church in Binondo Chinatown.

Officially known as the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz, Binondo Church is a monument to the enduring Catholic faith among the Chinese Filipino community. Originally founded by Dominican priests in 1596 to serve Chinese converts, the church underwent several reconstructions due to wars and natural disasters.

Its current façade and octagonal bell tower are remnants of the 19th century, blending Romanesque and Renaissance elements that make it a must-see. The church also celebrates masses in Filipino, English, and two Chinese dialects.

5. Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz, Binondo

the fountain in Plaza St. Lorenzo Ruiz across from Binondo Church, in Binondo Chinatown.

Named after the first Filipino saint, this plaza is surrounded by several historical buildings, including Binondo Church. It serves as a communal space that highlights the fusion of Filipino and Chinese cultures, with its open space offering a respite from the crowded streets and an excellent vantage point for appreciating the surrounding architecture.

Efforts to preserve and revitalize the plaza highlight its importance as a heritage site to bridge the past and present. Today, it remains a focal point for celebrations, cultural events, and daily interactions.

6. Escolta Street

places to visit in binondo manila

Once the premier commercial and business district during the American colonial era, Escolta boasts several historic buildings that have been preserved or repurposed. Architectural enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse styles ranging from Beaux-Arts to Neoclassical and Art Deco, reflecting the economic prosperity of Binondo in the early 20th century.

It is one of the country’s oldest streets and once the go-to place for luxury shopping, entertainment, and business from the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. The historic buildings housed the Philippines’ first department stores, cinemas, and business establishments catering to Manila’s elite.

However, Escolta Street’s prominence waned over the years. But recent revitalization efforts by the local government and various heritage conservation groups aim to breathe new life into this historic street. These initiatives include hosting arts and cultural events, and encouraging creative enterprises to set up shop in the area.

Today, Escolta is experiencing a renaissance as a center for arts, culture, and heritage tourism. It attracts a new generation interested in its rich history and architectural legacy, making it a symbol of Binondo’s past glory and its potential for future regeneration.

7. The First United Building

The First United Building's architectural details, such as its façade and interior elements, reflect the Art Deco movement's influence.

Formerly known as the Perez-Samanillo Building, the First United is a prime example of Art Deco architecture in the Philippines. The building’s architectural details, such as its façade and interior elements, reflect the Art Deco movement’s influence. Characterized by geometric patterns, bold lines, and a sense of elegance and modernity, they offer a glimpse into the opulent past of Binondo and Escolta.

Completed in 1928, the building was designed by Andres Luna de San Pedro, son of renowned Filipino painter Juan Luna. Despite the decline in Escolta’s prominence, the building remains a beloved landmark. In recent years, it has been revitalized as a cultural and arts venue. This effort is part of a broader initiative to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of Escolta Street.

8. The Regina Building

The Regina Building featuring 20th-century Neoclassical design elements.

The Regina Building is another historic gem along Escolta. Like the First United Building, the Regina Building is noted for its architectural beauty, showcasing early 20th-century Neoclassical design. Built in the 1930s, it served as a commercial building for various businesses and offices throughout its history.

Ornate details and sculptures adorn the Regina Building’s façade. The design emphasizes symmetry, grandeur, and the use of classical elements. Having weathered changes in Manila’s urban landscape, it stands as a reminder of Escolta’s storied past. Efforts to preserve and rehabilitate the Regina Building are part of the ongoing movement to revive the area’s cultural and historical significance.

The First United Building and the Regina Building are crucial components of the heritage conservation efforts in Escolta. Both represent the cultural and economic history of Binondo. They also reflect the architectural trends of their time. These are focal points for revitalization and cultural activities aimed at bringing new life to this historic district.

Binondo for the Ages

After more than 400 years, Binondo, Chinatown is understandably showing its age. However, this historic district continues to thrive as one of Manila’s most vibrant communities. Despite the challenges of modernization and the wear of time, Binondo manages to retain its unique cultural identity, blending Filipino and Chinese traditions in a unique and dynamic urban tapestry. The narrow streets, century-old buildings, and bustling markets still pulse with the energy of commerce, tradition, and daily life, much like they have for centuries.

Efforts to preserve its rich heritage are evident, with revitalization projects aiming to breathe new life into its historic structures while respecting their cultural significance. As you cross over from Jones Bridge, Binondo, Chinatown’s enduring charm lies in its ability to harmonize the old with the new, ensuring its legacy continues to be celebrated by future generations.

How Spain built Manila

Museo San Agustin opens Spanish engineering exhibit

TO recognize the work of individuals who designed infrastructure as far back as the 16 th century, Museo San Agustin and the Embassy of Spain recently opened the exhibit “Four Centuries of Spanish Engineering Overseas.”

Within the church museum’s old stone walls in Intramuros lie illustrations, blueprints, and reports of projects by engineers of the Spanish Crown. These items constitute a great technological heritage in the history of humanity, according to Maria Antonia Colomar, one of the exhibit’s curators.

“When the Spaniards arrived, cities and towns were formed, becoming the nerve center of a new system of organizing the territories and their landscape,” she said in Spanish at the exhibit’s opening on March 14.

Ms. Colomar added that this homage to the work of overseas military engineers was first exhibited at the General Archives of the Indies in Seville in 2018. Its current adaptation in the Philippines is enriched with pieces related to the archipelago, displayed for the first time in different parts of the exhibit.

It also divides the enormous body of work into various branches: urban planning and territorial organization, hydraulic works, communications, mining, industry, ports and fortification, and naval engineering.

“This is a very ambitious exhibition because it covers four centuries, from the 16 th to the 19 th century, in both American territories and the Philippines,” said co-curator Ignacio Sanchez de Mora in his opening speech.

The exhibit shows how the “building of the territory” took place by merging European-style infrastructures with pre-Hispanic precursors.

“We’d like to attract the youth to study engineering, enhance their understanding of its concepts, and inspire researchers who have yet to discover the importance of this specific field,” said Mr. Sanchez de Mora.

SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH Rev. Fr. Ricky B. Villar, director of Museo San Agustin, added that the year 2024 is a significant milestone for the San Agustin Church in particular. Completed in 1604, it now celebrates 420 years of existence.

“How this building lasted for four centuries in spite of different manmade and natural calamities and unfortunate events is a testament of both the structure’s strong foundation and the enduring legacy of the friars,” he said.

The church was declared a world heritage site in 1993. Its core structure remained miraculously intact even after the intense bombing during World War II which leveled Intramuros. It still survives thanks to conservation efforts.

Not all marvels of Spanish engineering are as lucky, however.

For Ms. Colomar, one of the things that excited her about bringing the exhibit to the Philippines was seeing in person the areas where structures that she had been studying were, such as the “Puente Grande” over Pasig River.

“I was excited to actually see the first bridge to ever cross the river, built by Augustinian friar Antonio Herrera in 1630 to connect Intramuros and Binondo. I didn’t realize it had been damaged by an earthquake in 1863 and later destroyed by flood in 1914,” Ms. Colomar said in Spanish.

She added that its fate, along with that of much of the infrastructure from the colonial period, goes to show how different the terrain and weather is in the Philippines. The bridge that stands in Puente Grande’s place today is Jones Bridge.

MAPS Among the 80 exhibition items that may fascinate Filipino visitors are a 1663 plan for improving the defenses of the square of Cavite; a 1715 map depicting Subic as a timber-producing shipyard; an 1814 sketch of Manila and the port at the mouth of Pasig River; and a railway plan for Luzon drafted in 1876, seen today in the Philippine National Railway.

A notable donated item is a copy of the Murillo-Velarde map from 1734, used as proof that Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands are part of the Philippines. In the map they are labeled as Panacot shoal and Los Bajos de Paragua, respectively.

Items pertaining to the Philippines, interspersed among others showing infrastructure built in Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, and other Hispanic territories in South America, highlights the amount of work engineers had put in across decades and even centuries.

“While most original copies of plans are in Madrid, the Philippines most likely has copies as well in its national archives since maps and sketches often have various ‘originals’ made,” Ms. Colomar said.

She emphasized the enormity of the contributions made by colonial engineers in developing cities and societies, a part of history that Filipinos can study and draw inspiration from moving forward.

The exhibit runs until Dec. 14 at the Museo San Agustin, General Luna St., Intramuros, Manila. The museum has an entrance fee of P200 for adults and P160 for students, PWDs, and senior citizens. — Brontë H. Lacsamana
