Coonoor, Tamil Nadu: The Complete Guide

A Tea-Focused Heritage Getaway in the Hills

coonoor places to visit in 2 days

Dinodia Photo/Getty Images

As a tourist destination, Coonoor in Tamil Nadu is overshadowed by the popular hill station of Ooty , which sits above it. However, it's starting to realize its potential, while still remaining a quieter retreat away from the crowds. Tea is the big draw there. This Coonoor travel guide will help plan your trip.

Prior to being developed by the British in the 19th century, Coonoor was a sparsely populated hilly area inhabited mostly by local tribes. It formed part of the kingdom of Mysore, until the British defeated ruler Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 and gained control of it. They decided Ooty was an ideal place to send their sick soldiers to recuperate, due to its cool European climate. A large number of British relocated there as well. Some of them began experimenting with tea growing in Coonoor, and finally succeeded after much trial and error.

In 1856, the tea from Coonoor Tea Estate received favorable reviews at a London auction. However, unfortunately, the size of land under cultivation wasn't enough to make the venture profitable. The lives of the early planters were difficult. Finding enough suitable and available land was a challenge, plus they had to contend with malaria and wild animals in the forests.

Nevertheless, by the end of the 19th century, viable tea plantations had been established on about 3,000 acres of land around Coonoor. A social club for the planters, the Coonoor Club had also been built and still functions as such today.

Although it took a while for Indians to like drinking tea (which is hard to believe, given their current widespread addiction to it!), the planters were able to sell enough tea in London to make substantial amounts of money. Their lifestyles became lavish and they swanned around in elegant bungalows with dance floors, manicured gardens, and tennis courts.

These days, Indians have replaced the British planters. Yet, Coonoor remains the place where the world-class Nilgiri tea originated.

Coonoor is situated about 1,850 meters (6,070 feet) above sea level in the mountainous Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, in the far western corner of the state. It's not far from the borders of Kerala and Karnataka. The closest major cities are Bangalore in Karnataka (about 300 kilometers/185 miles north), and Kochi in Kerala (about 280 kilometers/170 miles south). Coimbatore, a large city in Tamil Nadu, is 68 kilometers/42miles south of Coonoor and also has an airport that receives flights from all over India.

How to Get There

The most picturesque and memorable way of reaching Coonoor is to take the UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train . It runs all the way from the foothills at Mettupalayam, where the nearest major railway station is, up to Ooty. However, the best scenery is along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Make sure you book well in advance.

Alternatively, Coonoor can be reached via National Highway 181. Taking this road, the travel time is about two and a half hours from Coimbatore, or four hours from Mysore in Karnataka. The route from Coimbatore passes through dense forest is undoubtedly spectacular. However, if you suffer from motion sickness, you may want to avoid it or take precautions. The sharp ascent and frequent hairpin turns can be torturous, especially if you get a driver who speeds up and brakes suddenly.

Coonoor is a refreshing destination to escape the summer heat, from March to May. Keep in mind that May is peak season, due to summer school holidays. If you're not fond of rain, avoid October and November, as the northeast monsoon brings heavy downpours and may trigger landslides along the road. Coonoor also receives rain from the southwest monsoon, from June to September, but not quite as much. December to February is the dry winter season. Temperatures during this time range from around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) at night to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) in the day. The overnight temperature has been known to drop as low as zero on occasion in January, though!

What to Do There

Not surprisingly, Coonoor is one of the top places to visit tea plantations in India . Tranquilitea, a local tea industry pioneer, offers 90-minute gourmet tea tasting experiences twice-daily at their tea estate on the slopes of Tenerife Hill in Coonoor. You'll be able to sample the teas and gain insight into how they're made. (What's not well known is that Nilgiri teas are grown at altitudes higher than Darjeeling teas, giving them their intense aroma). Follow it up with a delicious High Tea there. You can also see how tea is processed at Highfield Tea Factory, Brooklands Tea Factory, and Homedale Tea Factory.

Coonoor town is characterized by the usual rampant concrete construction and chaos that's common in India, and has very little of the colonial appeal you may expect. Hence, it's best to head to Upper Coonoor, where a more refined and peaceful atmosphere prevails.

The Green Shop in Upper Coonoor's Bedford is worth visiting for its range of natural, fair-trade products such as honey, beeswax items, spices, herbs, grains, coffee, chocolates, essential oils, and garments. It's run by the Last Forest, an initiative of the Keystone Foundation , which works to improve the livelihoods of indigenous communities. There's another branch in Ooty that serves food and has an interesting bee museum.

If cheese is your thing, you'll be pleased to know that cheese-making is a tradition in the Nilgiri mountains. Acres Wild combines it with organic farming. To find out how to make your own gourmet artisan cheeses, stay at their farm on the outskirts of Upper Coonoor and take their compact 2-day cheese-making course . It's possible to extend the course if you want to learn the techniques for extra types of cheese. Otherwise, stop by Baker's Junction in Bedford to buy their cheeses (try the Colby, Gruyere and signature Camembert).

Upper Coonoor is an enjoyable neighborhood to stroll around. 12-hectare Sim's Park sprawls down a hillside and is the main attraction. It was established in 1874 by J. D. Sim, who was the secretary of the Madras Club, and is said to have as many as 1,000 types of plants from all over the world. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs 30 rupees per person to enter. The annual fruit and vegetable show, in May, is renowned. Even though a lot of day-tripping tourists visit the park, it remains much less crowded than the botanical gardens in Ooty. From Sim's Park, wander along Kotagiri Road, past old colonial bungalows and tea gardens (you can do a loop and end up back at Sim's Park via Walker's Hill Road).

Dolphin's Nose Road will take you east of Upper Coonoor to a viewpoint of the same name. It provides an arresting vista of the Nilgiri mountains and Catherine Falls. You can stop off at another viewpoint, Lamb's Rock, on the way. It overlooks the Coimbatore plains. If you're feeling energetic, it's possible to trek to Dolphin's Nose from lesser-known Lady Canning's Seat nearby. Trekking from Catherine Falls to the small hill station of Kotagiri is recommended as well. Wandertrails offers this guided trek.

The ruins of 18th century Droog Fort, used by Tipu Sultan, is another great destination to trek to. The scenic but somewhat strenuous trail goes through Nonsuch Tea Estate.

The lush vegetation around Coonoor is also home to many species of birds. Avid birdwatchers can join this four-hour birdwatching experience .

Those who are interested in Coonoor's heritage should include isolated (and rather haunting) Tiger Hill Cemetery on their itineraries too. This largely overgrown British Gothic cemetery, set up in 1905, is where the British tea planters are buried. There's another older cemetery next to All Saints' Church, with graves of British soldiers dating back to 1852.

Where to Stay

For a complete tea experience, stay amid the tea gardens. Top options include Tranquiltea's Tenerife Hill (authentic Badaga indigenous cuisine is served, which is a bonus), the Tea Nest on Singara Tea Estate, Storyteller , or Sunvalley Homestay . Glendale Tea Estate's Runnymede and Adderley guesthouses are budget options.

Many of the accommodations in Upper Coonoor are British planter's bungalows that have been converted into hotels, and they have fascinating histories. The Gateway Taj hotel on Church Road , which was originally the famous Hampton Manor, is the grandest option. Second is Neemrana's Wallwood Garden.

SerentipityO's 180° McIver has a 180 degree view of Coonoor town and six rooms in an ancestral bungalow built in the early 1900s. The delightful Strathearn Bed and Breakfast provides intimate boutique accommodations in a 120 year-old Scottish bungalow.

Tranquilitea offers an interesting option in Upper Coonoor for visitors who'd prefer to stay in self-contained accommodations. The Club House is housed in the shell of a converted tea warehouse and has two luxurious suites with their own kitchenettes. A personal chef can be provided if you don't want to cook.

The YWCA Wyoming guesthouse is the best budget choice in a heritage property. Or, check out Kumar's Mountain View Cottage .

Where to Eat and Drink

You'll find the best vegetarian south Indian food in Coonoor town at inexpensive Hotel Sri Lakshmi, opposite the bus stand. Another decent option for a non-vegetarian south Indian meal in town is Hotel Ramachandra, about five minutes walk from the bus stand. The signature Wellington Paratha is a delicacy there.

If you like sweets, drop into historic Crown Bakery in the heart of Coonoor town and pick up some iconic varkey biscuits.

La Belle Vie, the classy restaurant at 180° McIver, has an eclectic Indian and European menu. You'll also get delicious pizzas at the cozy Open Kitchen in Bedford.

For fabulous coffee and cakes, Ababa Cafe in Bedford is the place! Or, for Indian-style tea and snacks, hit up The Chaiwala. It's a tiny, family-run place in Upper Coonoor.

Hopscotch, at the Vivek Hotel , is fun retro-style pub with live music and a pool table.

Table of Contents

When we hear the word ‘Ooty’ suddenly mind will be telling ‘wow’ ! right? – Yes. Ooty( Udhagamandalam)  is loving called as “Queen of Hills” or “Queen of Hill stations”. Ooty is one such place in Tamilnadu where the hills are tucked in the Nilgiris or the Blue mountains.

Ooty is almost 2240m above sea level and the weather is so pleasing, which allows you to explore the beauty around you without breaking a sweat. And it is a paradise for Love birds as it has lush green parks and tea plantations, tall pines, valleys, peaks, rose garden, lake, last but very important is foggy atmosphere etc., made Ooty a very special tourist place in South India.

Tea plantations

Like Ooty, Coonoor is also a beautiful with tea plantations, hills, parks, fog with morning dew. You may feel the dew like rain sometimes ! and we felt it in our trip. The moist breeze of the misty hills of Coonoor tingles the nerves and tickles the senses. It is no surprise that goose bumps amaze and distract at the same time while engrossed in the flavours of this very place and that includes the sights. Coonoor is 1850m above sea level and the weather is same as Ooty, but Coonoor is more quieter than Ooty, also has very good options for stay. That’s why we chose to stay in Coonoor rather than staying at Ooty.

Nilgiri Toy Train is an added attraction to both Ooty and Coonoor. You get to see awesome picturesque valleys, lush green hills, tea plantations, lofty mountains, tall pine trees. Overall Toy train is a must visit when you go to Ooty/Coonoor.

If I have to tell about our stay, we were staying in ‘The Gateway Hotel’ by Taj   Hotels.  Tucked between manicured gardens, this signature heritage-hotel & restaurant is a lovely place. And they also have a brilliant buffet option for food. Ayurvedic massage centre and rooms with views of the garden and very good staff service make you feel so heavenly.

There are plenty of options available, if you plan early. Also check the recent reviews online before booking your stays.

Food/ Dining in Coonoor

In South India Dining may not be a problem for anybody I feel. Because many options like Indian to Italian, Chinese foods are easily available in most of the places. And there are so many cafes, and local cuisine restaurants are available. With the serene ambience you will feel every bite is worth enjoying.

You can also experience the taste of unadulterated organic honey which is one of the best offerings of the city in terms of natural products. Also you can buy homemade chocolates and variety of tea powders, which is famous in Ooty and Coonoor.

We didn’t do anything much shopping there, just bought a couple of sweaters which was necessary, but prices were bit on the higher side I felt.

Here are the many other places which you may like to visit, Hogenakal waterfalls , Sakleshpur , Lepakshi

So Let’s come to the actual Itinerary

Ooty-Coonoor itinerary | 3 days 2 nights in Coonoor (but totally 5 days) !

It’s very hard to explain that feeling in words that too in one post about the entire journey. Like our Journey starts from Bangalore around 11.30 am and we reach Mysore(Lalitha Mahal Palace hotel) for lunch around 3pm. After finishing the lunch headed towards towards Masinagudi for a night stay, on the way we got to see Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Though we couldn’t see Tiger but able to see many deer, peacocks and the beautiful nature all the way.

Peacock at Bandipur

Around 6.30 we reached Singaras Coffee Country Masinagudi, one of the peaceful place for the ones who are bored of daily chaos and buzzes in the city. But there is no facility of restaurant there, you can order the food from outside hotel. Apart from that everything was good, rooms were newly built and clean. Staffs are friendly and helping, you can request for campfire, during campfire we were able to see some of the deers. If you are lucky enough you can witness elephant in the vicinity too.

Sunrise at Masinagudi

Next day morning after finishing the breakfast and we checked out and started our journey towards Coonoor via Ooty. It was beautiful nature, hairpin bends, valleys, tall pine trees, greener tea plantations everything we witnessed throughout our journey. We stopped at Culinarium-Coonoor , which is nestled in the vast and beautiful Ketti Valley (second widest valley in the world).Superb location and ambience, desserts and bakery items which we ordered were very nice though the service was late. Very good place for a quick stop and enjoy the quick bites, pastries, bakery items, lunch/dinner. Food was delicious and yummy!.

Culinarium-Coonoor

Around 2pm we reached Gateway hotel Coonoor by Taj . After checking in we had our lunch and relaxed for that day.

3 days in Coonoor : Relaxed Coonoor itinerary

( ooty-coonoor itinerary | 3 days 2 nights in coonoor ), day 1: sim’s park.

The Sim’s Park was developed around the natural contours of the land more than hundred years ago. The initiative of the development of the park was undertaken by Mr J.D. Sim’s and Major Murray in the year 1874.  Sim’s park is one of the famous tourist attractions and having the oldest trees.  The Sim’s park is the ideal place to indulge in all of your favourite nature activities, including clicking splendid photographs, taking long peaceful walks, boating and sightseeing. The garden has been divided into four parts – the Rose Garden, a small lily pond, the flowering plants area and a boating area. Children especially love the boat rides in the lake, while adults mostly prefer to sit back and relax. There are no shops that serve food inside the park. Thus, it is good to carry some light snacks and water along.

Sim's Park, Coonoor

Day 2: Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Chocolate museum

Nilgiri Mountain Railway | Toy Train

Toy Train is one of the must visit when you go to Ooty or Coonoor. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) , better known as Ooty toy train is the highlight of the popular hill town of Ooty in Tamil Nadu, India. This is a world heritage train that travels between Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor daily and imparts picturesque views while providing relief from the stifling summer heat. Started in the year 1899, it has continued to charm its visitors with equal zest winding its way through the best of nature. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005.

Coonoor to Ooty train ride is ethereal that weaves amidst the forests, dark snaking tunnels, sharp bends and amid the mist and fog. The toy train ride in Ooty is a trip to treasure up and down the hilly slopes. Apart from offering a beautiful journey, the uniqueness of the ride lies in the fact that the rail system is the steepest in Asia. The ride starts from Mettupalayam; a small place on river Bhavani. For the first few miles, vacationers travel on plains but the next miles take up to an elevation of up to a height of 4363 feet. This lovely toy train ride is best means to discover the pristine treasures of the Nilgiris.

Here are some glimpse of those:

Toy train coonoor

Museum has good facilities to show and explain how the chocolates are made in home. One person will explain the entire process of making the chocolates bars from the cocoa fruit. I will write a separate article on Chocolate Museum very soon.

Its a journey from Bean to Bar and its pure joy in every bite. You will get chocolate dipped wafer as complimentary. Also you can buy variety of chocolates there if you are chocolate lover.

Day 3: Ayurvedic Spa

We were checking out from the hotel, so we wanted to experience the Ayurvedic spa services. It was a wonderful time spent for ourselves. I was so relaxed after coming from the spa.

at Gateway Hotel by Taj

We checked out, had our lunch and started to Salem for a night stay. We were staying in Zibe Salem by GRT hotels. It was again a good hotel and good chef, who personally come to you ask for your tastes. Nice food and kind of good hotel.

2024 NFL draft: 15 fits for the Detroit Lions to watch on Day 2

  • Updated: Apr. 26, 2024, 10:34 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 26, 2024, 7:40 a.m.

WMU vs BGSU

Western Michigan Broncos defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland (99) chases after Bowling Green Falcons quarterback Connor Bazelak (7) during a football game at Waldo Stadium on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023. Nate Pappas | Mlive.com

ALLEN PARK -- And just like that, we’re on to Day 2 of the 2024 NFL draft, with the Detroit Lions making a splash by moving up the order to get a stud cornerback to open the three-day event.

As things stand, the Lions are slated to pick only once (Pick 61) on Day 2 after moving up to grab Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold. The Lions sent Picks 29 and 73 (Round 3) to the Dallas Cowboys for Pick 24 and a seventh-round pick in next year’s draft.

There was an unrelenting run on offensive players and quarterbacks to open the first night of the draft. The first defensive player wasn’t taken until the Indianapolis Colts selected UCLA edge defender Laiatu Latu at Pick 15. Brad Holmes has proven to be a trade-happy general manager this time of year, so we’ll still run through 15 fits to watch on Day 2 of the NFL draft.

The Lions have the following remaining picks heading into Friday: Round 2, Pick 61; Round 5, Pick 164; Round 6, Pick 201; Round 6, Pick 205; and Round 7, Pick 249.

Related: 2024 NFL draft: Detroit Lions trade up for Alabama’s Terrion Arnold at No. 24 overall

Illinois DL Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton

The first four names featured are four that the Lions would almost undoubtedly need to trade up for a chance. And while that’s a risky proposition, no doubt, they fill needs while arguably being the best three available. Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton was this beat writer’s favorite defensive line prospect. He’s a pressure-creating machine, leading all FBS interior defenders with 103 pressures over the last two seasons. Newton won 15.4% of his pass rushes and comes from a rising defensive training ground for the next level from Illinois.

It would cost a pretty penny to get into Newton’s range. But the early run on offensive players has made the top of the second round full of enticing defensive options. Newton would help form one of the deepest defensive lines in the league if he were to land in Detroit. Alim McNeill was a breakout performer last season, and new addition DJ Reader has been one of the game’s best nose tackles whenever healthy and available.

Oregon iOL Jackson Powers-Johnson

Jackson Powers-Johnson is another favorite mock pick and prospect for the Lions through the last couple of months of draft chatter. Powers-Johnson moved from guard to center at Oregon, then left Eugene as the top player at his position in the country. He comes from a program and offensive line that the Lions know well and would ensure their top strength remains one of the league’s best with his depth at all three interior positions. It’s hard to get a read on interior offensive linemen, so if Powers-Johnson’s fall continues, then watch out.

Iowa DB Cooper DeJean

Among the surprises of players left on the board after Round 1? Cooper DeJean takes the cake. The versatile Iowa defensive back was cleared for all football activities ahead of the draft. And DeJean was impressive in his workout for scouts, flashing the athleticism that made him the Big Ten’s top defensive back and return specialist in 2023. DeJean would bring depth across the board to the Lions and their new-look secondary. He could play inside, move deep and even compete for reps in the outside rotation. That’s not due to a lack of a home position; DeJean is skilled at each spot in the secondary.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see DeJean start the day at Pick 33. Once again, it’s tough to sell another trade-up the order, but it’s also a unique opportunity to supercharge the defense with a talented prospect.

West Virginia iOL Zach Frazier

Zach Frazier has lingered as a potential Lions target for a couple of months now, too. Frazier brings the intriguing experience of being a four-time state champion wrestler to the interior offensive line. He didn’t allow a single sack, surrendering just three pressures across 806 reps. The three-year starter could make use of a year behind players like Frank Ragnow, Graham Glasgow and Kevin Zeitler while getting as much work as possible at guard.

There are so many defensive players left on the board that it’s all-of-a-sudden somewhat believable that Frazier could fall into Detroit’s lap late in the second round.

Kansas State iOL Cooper Beebe

Cooper Beebe is an intriguing option with his pure size and pass-blocking chops in the trenches. The 6-foot-3, 322-pounder has played left tackle, left guard, right guard and right tackle dating back to 2021. He allowed only two sacks across the last three seasons, with elite pass-blocking marks from Pro Football Focus. It could be an ideal situation for Beebe to cut his teeth for a year behind Graham Glasgow and Kevin Zeitler, with Hank Fraley watching closely.

Full disclosure: Beebe’s name could get featured on the Day 3 fit list, as well. But if the Lions were to either move down or get back into the third round, then the Kanas State standout makes quite a bit of sense.

Connecticut iOL Christian Haynes

Christian Haynes’ name started rising on the boards after an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl. And in terms of pure guards, he might be at the top of this year’s class. Haynes surrendered only one sack and two quarterback hits across his last 1,613 snaps for the Huskies. It’s easy to see a path to success for the sturdy guard, with his long arms and rock-solid athleticism. Much like Beebe, this is a long-term thinking move, with a chance to learn behind the proven veterans in the trenches in Detroit. Haynes at Pick 61 might be right in the sweet spot if the Lions stay put.

Florida State DL Braden Fiske

Braden Fiske did a little bit of everything on Florida State’s mighty defensive line in 2023. He won 8.9% of his pass rushes and notched a run-stop win rate of 9.1%. Fiske had nine tackles for loss and six sacks in his lone season for the Seminoles. Before that? He was dominating the Mid-American Conference at Western Michigan, posting 27 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in four seasons. Fiske could fill out the rotation well with his elite athleticism for the position, looking like a strong fit next to McNeill, Reader, Levi Onwuzurike and Brodric Martin.

Florida State WR Keon Coleman

Keon Coleman has the youth and playmaking ability that should have receiver-needy teams licking their chops on Day 2. Coleman’s 40-yard dash time drove people away. But his short-space speed, leaping ability and size are too much to ignore. And he’s just 21 years old, so there is something to mold for the future in that 6-foot-3, 213-pound frame. After losing Josh Reynolds in free agency, the Lions taking a wide receiver feels like a strong when and not if.

Western Michigan EDGE Marshawn Kneeland

Marshawn Kneeland was a standout stud in the Mid-American Conference. He also won over some new adorers at the Senior Bowl, notching the fastest-recorded time among defensive linemen on the field. Kneeland won 17.3% pass rushes to go along with an 11% run-stop win rate for the Broncos last season. The Lions hosted Kneeland for a pre-draft visit, and he said there were talks down at the scouting combine, too. He brings the power and potential inside-outside versatility the Lions have shown and grown to love in recent years.

The Grand Rapids native flashed impressive explosive and agility testing in Indianapolis. He’s a hard-working player who would bring some much-needed pop to Detroit’s defense. Also, he might just be there at Pick 61.

Clemson DL Ruke Orhorhoro

Ruke Orhorhoro played his high school ball at River Rouge in Metro Detroit. But his potential fit to the Lions doesn’t have anything to do with those regional ties. Orhorhoro was a constant improver at Clemson and is still relatively new to the game to be on this stage. He saved his best for last for the Tigers, too. Orhorhoro posted five sacks and eight tackles for loss in Year 5. It was the third straight season he posted eight tackles for loss from the interior. He seems like something who has more room to grow as a pass rusher while possessing, wait for it, potential inside-outside versatility. There is quite a bit to like about Orhorhoro and the Lions in Round 2.

Related: Ultra-confident Clemson DL via Metro Detroit earns praise as rising prospect

Minnesota S Tyler Nubin

We haven’t spent too much time discussing Tyler Nubin before the draft. He might be the top safety in this year’s draft and could add more versatile depth to the defensive backfield. Nubin would give the Lions more options between Ifeatu Melifonwu and Kerby Joseph, working Brian Branch into the equation on the back end.

Nubin has proven to be able to handle anything, with 84 snaps in the slot, five out wide and a ton from inside the box or on the line. Nubin was an elite coverage safety, rocking a forced incompletion rate of 20%. He allowed only six catches on 20 targets, allowing two touchdowns while intercepting four passes. The Minnesota standout would be able to hold his own at the line while making plays and crashing down in certain looks back deep.

Washington EDGE Bralen Trice

Bralen Trice has strong all-around chops for an edge defender. He posted 76 pressures this past season, with an FBS-best 71 first pressures created. Trice won 17.6% of his pass rushers with his violent and quick hands. There is an impressive level of physicality to his game. Trice posted 23.5 tackles for loss and 16 sacks during his final two seasons for the Huskies. The Lions need more for their pass rush, and Trice is a strong fit who would fir their mold.

Related: Washington EDGE checks a ton of boxes as all-around fit for Detroit Lions

Rutgers CB Max Melton

Max Melton took some hits during his time at Rutgers. He allowed 12 touchdowns over the last three seasons. But Melton also intercepted eight balls in that span and had some boom-or-bust tendencies in his game. But Melton is someone who continued to get better the more he played and might offer some inside-outside versatility. Melton is no stranger in press looks and plays with a grittiness that’s hard to ignore as someone who covers the Lions for a living. Terrion Arnold is a massive boost to the secondary. But everyone else at the top of the projected depth chart is entering the season with one year left on their deals, so Melton stays.

Alabama EDGE Chris Braswell

Chris Braswell feels like he’s flying under the radar a little too much. Braswell had 10.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception he returned for a 28-yard touchdown. The fourth-year player was one of the best pass rushers in the nation in 2023, winning 18.2 of his pass-rush reps thanks to his explosiveness and strong size-speed combo.

Houston Christian EDGE Jalyx Hunt

Jalyx Hunt has earned some fans in recent weeks, making him a sneaky-rising name to watch. He gets praised for his special athleticism and as a playmaking star at Houston Christian with nine tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one pick. Hunt ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash to go along with elite 20-yard and 10-yard split times, not to mention a 37.5-inch vert. He’s a small school project, but Hunt sounds like he’s in Brad Holmes’ wheelhouse.

2024 NFL Draft: Historic run on quarterbacks, offensive players with top 14 picks in first round

Two big milestones took place in round 1.

NFL: NFL Draft

History was made Thursday night in Detroit. For the first time in the  NFL Draft , six quarterbacks were selected in the first 12 picks. It was also the first time that each of the first 14 picks were offensive players. The record-breaking run finally came to an end when the Colts selected UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu with the No. 15 pick.

This is clearly a sign of the times, as offense continues to take on a bigger focus in the NFL . Specifically, the quarterback position is more valuable than ever, given the rule changes and the continued evolution of the passing game.

As expected, quarterbacks Caleb Williams , Jayden Daniels and Drake Maybe were selected with the first three picks. What wasn't expected was the Falcons selecting quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick. Atlanta, after all, just signed Kirk Cousins to a whopping four-year, $180 million deal. It seems that the Falcons are mimicking the Packers ' game plan when it comes to handling quarterbacks.

The other offensive players drafted in the top 12: wideouts Marvin Harrison Jr . (No. 4 to the Cardinals ), Malik Nabers (No. 6 to the New York Giants ) and Rome Odunze (No. 9 to the Bears ), offensive tackles Joe Alt (No. 5 to the Chargers ), JC Latham (No. 7 to the Titans ), Olumuyiwa Fashanu (No. 11 to the Jets ) and Taliese Fuaga (No. 14 to the Saints ), tight end Brock Bowers (No. 13 to the Raiders ) and quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy (who was selected by the Vikings after Minnesota traded up one spot to draft him with the 10th pick) and Bo Nix (No. 12 to the Broncos ).
