3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit in a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey is one of the newest mid-sized SUVs / crossovers on the market, offering an alternative to a market full of SUVs like the Honda Pilot , Toyota Highlander , Ford Edge , Jeep Wrangler , and Jeep Grand Cherokee . It’s a sharp looking SUV and one of the only mid-sized SUVs out there that offers a 3rd row, along with SUVs like the Pilot, Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe , Ford Flex , and Volvo XC90 , which made me curious about how it does when it comes to successful 3 across car seat installations.

You know the basics of best practices in car seat safety: rear-face as long as possible ( ideally until 4 !), and then forward-face as long as possible ( ideally until 8 !), and then booster until a regular belt fits your child ( which typically happens between 10 and 12 ).

However, for this information to be helpful, you need to know if a particular car seat will fit in your particular vehicle. Here are my experiences fitting a range of seats inside various years of the Dodge Journey. I’ll periodically update each page as I try more seats in more positions.

You can access  the complete 3 across guide for every vehicle here  and  the complete list of recommended seats here . 3 across car seat images are courtesy of Wikipedia.

Tips and Tricks:

This is the only generation of the Dodge Journey, and it is 192 inches long and 72 inches wide. Achieving 3 across installations should be relatively straightforward at that width in the 2nd row, but achieving even 2 across will be significantly more difficult in the 3rd row jump seats.

It may also be slightly easier to achieve a 3 across installation in the 2009 and 2010 model years than in the 2011 and later model years due to slight updates in the Journey’s interior trim linings.

It’s also important to note that in the Dodge Journey, there are no tethers in the 3rd row if a 3rd row is present, and there are only 2 tethers in the 2nd row. Some parents also state that the 3rd row Journeys are wider than the 2nd row Journeys, although I haven’t been able to verify this.

Furthermore, the center seat is the one I find most tricky for a good install with particular seats, due to the plastic hinges present as well as the locking latch plate on the seat belt itself. The buckle stalk is also fixed in place and rather short, which can also make things tricky.

The Journey has a 5th lower anchor in the 2nd row – which theoretically allows a car seat to be installed in 2C with LATCH (but not when a car seat is in 2P)… but the reality can be quite different.

Below is an image from the owner’s manual, showing that there are 5 lower anchors (A through E). A and B are a pair to install a car seat in 2P, B and C are a pair to install a car seat in 2C, and D and E are a pair to install a car seat in 2D. B can NEVER be used by more than one car seat at a time.

Note: The 2009-2010 Journey does not have a head restraint in 2C – since 2011 there is a head restraint for 2C. Otherwise the back seats are identical in all model years.

2020 Dodge Journey Overview

Is the 2020 dodge journey a good used suv.

The 2020 Journey is not a very good used SUV. Its cabin is full of cheap plastics, the third row is incredibly cramped, and cargo space is subpar for a midsize SUV . On top of that, this Dodge lacks the tech – including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a host of safety features – you can find in most rivals.

There are plenty of better vehicles to consider. The 2020 Kia Sorento has a nicer cabin, more tech and safety features (including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and better fuel economy. Despite being a compact SUV , the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan has more cargo room than the Journey, and it can be had with all-wheel drive.

The 2020 Journey’s five-year costs for gas, insurance, taxes, fees, repairs, and maintenance are projected to be about $30,070, or $6,014 per year. These ownership costs are low for the class.

2019 vs. 2020 Dodge Journey: What's the Difference?

Dodge’s main changes to the 2020 Journey were subtractions. The available V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive were discontinued, and the trims were condensed from four to two, leaving just the SE Value and the Crossroad. Additionally, rear parking sensors were added to the standard features list.

Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

Dodge made the 2020 Journey in two trim levels: SE Value and Crossroad. Both have a 172-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.

The SE Value is sparsely equipped, so shoppers may want to skip it in favor of the Crossroad.

  • Dodge Journey SE Value: Standard features include a 4.3-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, dual-zone manual climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
  • Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Crossroad gains an 8.4-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, second-row in-floor storage bins, a sunroof, fog lights, and alloy wheels. Some Crossroads may come with navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and/or remote start.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions too.

Dodge has one of the weaker CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Rivals such as Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford and Honda are all better.

2020 Dodge Journey Versus the Competition

2020 dodge journey vs. 2020 ford explorer.

The 2020 Ford Explorer is a much better midsize SUV than the Dodge. It has stronger engines, sharper handling, better fuel economy estimates, more passenger room, a larger cargo hold, and many more standard safety features. Go with the Ford.

2020 Dodge Journey vs. 2020 Honda CR-V

The two-row 2020 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV , but its first two rows offer more passenger space than the Journey's front rows, and it has an additional 8.2 cubic feet of cargo space. The Honda offers more tech and safety features than the Dodge, and it provides a more stable ride. The CR-V is the better vehicle.

2020 Journey Performance

How does the 2020 dodge journey drive.

The only available engine for the Journey is an underpowered four-cylinder that struggles to bring the vehicle up to speed. Additionally, the automatic transmission hesitates to downshift.

The Journey provides a mostly gentle ride, but the SUV feels unwieldy around turns and suffers from a lot of body lean. Furthermore, the steering is imprecise and requires frequent corrections. All-wheel drive is not available.

  • Engine: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: four-speed automatic

2020 Dodge Journey Gas Mileage

This Dodge earns an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Those are typical fuel economy estimates for the midsize SUV class , which includes V6-powered rivals. For an SUV with a four-cylinder engine, however, this vehicle disappoints.

2020 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity

The Journey can tow up to 1,000 pounds when properly equipped. That’s poor for the class. There are even some compact SUVs that can tow more than that.

2020 Journey Interior

2020 journey interior quality.

Most class rivals have nicer interiors than the Journey's. Cheap and flimsy plastics make up the bulk of this vehicle’s cabin.

How Many People Does the 2020 Journey Seat?

The 2020 Journey seats seven people in three rows. The first two rows have enough head- and legroom to accommodate most adults, but the third row is tight, even for kids. Some reviewers also find that the rearmost seats are stiff.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Dodge Journey?

This Dodge has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats. The second-row middle seat has a lower anchor and a tether, plus the ability to borrow a lower anchor from the passenger-side seat. There are no tethers for the third row.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The tethers are hard to find and easily confused for other hardware, the middle anchor is hard to maneuver around, and the driver-side lower anchors are set deeply in the seats.

2020 Dodge Journey Features

Like other Dodge and Jeep vehicles, the Journey comes with the Uconnect infotainment system. It’s easy to use and has a responsive touch screen along with handy physical controls. However, there are fewer features than you’ll get with rivals, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, and a USB port
  • Available infotainment features : an 8.4-inch touch screen, a six-speaker premium stereo, satellite radio, navigation, Bluetooth, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch display
  • Additional standard features: dual-zone manual climate control, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry
  • Other available features: remote start, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof

Where does a car seat go???

My son is on his way, I have the car seat and went to put it in our Journey....nothing in the user manual as to where it should go....called chrysler...they said call your dealer...went to dealer...he said I could put it anywhere in the back seat. When I said so there are three "LATCH" attachments he said what's LATCH????? Uh...oh.... Searched the net, asked around, etc....still no confirmation.

The big question is...With side curtain airbags should the seat be in the middle? And If so because this is a split seat (in the second row) with a fold down armrest is there a danger of that armrest folding down and causing injury or lossening up the sttchment of the carseat base?

and now I realize I posted this in the wrong forum. Is there anyway to move it to the community forum?

When you put the armrest up, be sure it is lock in place. For the LATCH, good question... there is absolutely nothing in the user manual? There is nothing about car seat?

EDIT: If you read this topic: , it seems to be there, but not easy to find. Maybe if you fold the seat just a little bit you will see it. I remember that it was this way in the Caravan, maybe it is the same thing with the Journey...

I found nothing in my manual about the car seat placement or the latch system. I did find the LATCH rings in our Jurney and there seems to be 4 of them, which would accomadate putting the car seat in any of the three positions. I have no problem installing it (I hope) I just want some concrete answer on which position is the safest for this vehicle. As I said I have no idea about the side curtain airbags in interacting with a car seat, or the fold down armrests lock reliability in an accident....

Still searching the net, asking everyone and still can't get a solid seems this info should be readily available especially when the statics say that 80% of car seats are installed incorrectly.

Thanks for the help.

When I called Chrysler they suggested I send an e-mail to'll try that

Hi LVJourney-

Just to add my 2 cents....I would suggest putting an infant carrier in the middle, as was suggested previously. It really is the safest place for such a small munchkin (got 2 of my own - 2 year old & 1 year old). The only thing, is, those carriers get HEAVY and may become cumbersome to lift and place in the one of my older cars (2001 BMW X5 SUV), we ended up putting him in the passenger side because it was just too much for me to lift him up and in every time. Especially with a purse, diaper bag, and any other purchases on my arm. It also came in handy when I had to feed him on the fly from the passenger side. I just had to turn my arm around. With regards to the armrest in the middle - I wouldn't think that it would be a concern as the way your base should be installed would prevent it from folding down, wouldn't it?

As for the LATCH system, I believe, but don't quote me, that all cars after a certain date (2000?) are required to have the LATCH system for carseats. This system includes the black metal "U" hooks beneath the seat back/between the seat bottom, as well as a tether anchor hook in the back of the seat (this is for the bigger seats later on). They are a PAIN to use - but really do limit the amount the seat will move (the seat base should be able to move no more than 1" from side to side). A helpful hint - try laying your seat backwards when installing the LATCH hooks in the base of the seat (and for the anchor tether later on). This REALLY makes is easy to install the seat tightly. I also "kneed" in my carrier/carseat as I was tightening the LATCH belt on the carrier. Be sure to check your carrier's instruction manual - some actually advise AGAINST using the LATCH system (my daughter's car seat now is this case). And, if all else fails, go to a local state trooper headquarters and they will show you, for free, how your seat should be installed by actually doing it for you and explaining step-by-step.

Just another tid bit - at Babies 'R Us, there is a nice seat protector by LionHeart. It has a plastic base and a velcro-attached back portion to help protect the Journey's seats. I've tried all of the other ones out there (I have leather) and none of them come close to protecting the seats as well as these do. They are around $25/ea and can be interior color matched.

Hope this helps - and CONGRATS!! It is one of the most enjoyable things in life...but they really do grow up SO fast. My guys are going to be 3 & 2 in March 2009 (him on the 12th, her on the 30th)...seems like I just had them!

If you have any other questions - please feel free to drop me an email and I'll do my best to help!

Glad I could help!! This should take you to it...

Babies R Us - LionHeart

Snow-bird Excellent post I am going to check out that seat protector.
I just use a piece of cardboard since I don't need to protect the seat back (just the bottom). It seems to do the trick and it costs $0 and was custom made to fit my Journey ;-)
  • 2 weeks later...

Great post snow bird. Just an update, Federal Regs. made it mandatory for the latch system to be installed in all 2002 MY and newer.

As for the safest place, California Highway PAtrol (from the new child class i took) states the safest place is always in the rear (middle seats if you have a 3 row) and in the middle seat.

  • 3 months later...

You could always purchase a car seat that has a base that is installed using the seat belt. The carrier then latches into the base. The great thing about this kind of carrier is that if you have to use a different vehicle, like a cab, you don't need the base. The seat belt threads through the carrier and secures the child and carrier. (We bought ours from Graco) I agree the middle of the backseat would be the safest place for an infant, if you do a lot of driving just you and the baby though, you might want to consider moving the seat over to the passenger side of the vehicle. It can be very difficult to bend your arm 90 degrees to reach the child while they are in the middle.

3 across 2015 dodge journey

I need to fit 3 rear facing kids in a 2015 dodge journey preferably without using the 3rd row. I'm very confused because there is only 1 latch hook in the middle seat and the middle seat belt doesn't lock. How would I get a carseat In the middle If it doesn't lock or has proper latch? I have a slimfit and an extend2fit on either side both installed with latch and looking to put a graco snugride snuglock 35 XT in the middle (I believe that's the thinnest seat I've found)

Cpst and ketchup snob.

  • Jun 10, 2021

Hi! You will probably be able to get 3 seats in that row. You will likely need to use seatbelt installs for all of them (with tether if forward facing) and it's possible the Extend2Fit might be too wide, though you can give it a try. (As an aside, the Clek Lling is narrower if you're looking for a narrower rear-facing only bucket seat, but it's possible that you don't actually need a seat that thin- just seatbelt installs for the seats in the outboard positions and possibly a slimmer seat than the Extend2Fit if you find it overlaps the center seating position too much.) Your vehicle doesn't have 3 full lower anchor positions. Instead the center position shares one with an outboard position; therefore they can't both be used at once. Your manual will have this information, and instruct you to use a seatbelt install in the center when there are seats in the outboard positions. I can't vouch for the Journey but many Dodge/Chrysler vehicles of that era have a cinching (lightweight locking) latch plate on the buckle to lock the belt center instead of a switchable retractor that you pull out to lock. Again, this info is in your manual in the child seat section; you can also test as described here: If you have a cinching/lightweight locking latch plate, the 2 pieces of the belt must lie parallel to remain tight, or else you will use a locking clip or built in lockoff to install. (There are many rear facing only seats with built in lockoffs available.) Again, you will likely need to use seatbelt for all 3 seats in order to fit them. You will also need to test for independent install. After installing all 3 seats to make sure they physically fit without pushing each other out of place, remove the one in the center and make sure the seats on the side don't move more than 1 inch in any direction when you pull where the belt goes through the seat. Mark where the latch plate lies (I use painters tape or chalk for this) and remove them. Then install the center seat, again, until it doesn't move more than an inch when tugged where the belt goes through. Now reinstall the outside seats, making sure you get them as tight as before according to your marks. Good luck!

3-Across Carseats: Making the Impossible Possible!

Thank you. I figured I'd have to use seat belt install it was just the fact that the middle belt didn't lock when I pulled it all the way out like the other belts do. I may be able to replace the extend2fit with a slimfit3 for my oldest. I like the extend2fit for him because he's 3years old 37lbs and 37inches so if I switch him from the extend2fit I'll probably have to front face him.

Learn how to install a car seat in your 2010 Dodge Journey. Regardless of whether your make has the latch system or the seat belt attachment method, this video shows how to tether a baby seat or a booster seat to the rear seats. In addition this video shows how to connect rear facing infant car seats, rear facing toddler car seats, forward facing child seats and booster with latch seats. The connection point to your 2010 Journey is then same regardless of what car seat is chosen. Note that most rear facing car seats do not utilize the center anchor point to connect the car seat but rely on the two lower anchor points exclusively. The center anchor point is typically only used for forward facing car seats. You should always defer to the owners manual for your specific car seat for size determinations and front vs rear facing recommendations. Determining whether your child should be front facing or rear facing in your 2010 Dodge Journey is dependent on the height and weight of your child and the specific car seat model. The rear facing position is safest and children should remain rear facing as long as possible. It is imperative that newborns are always rear facing.

Do dodge journeys have 3rd-row seating what to know.

grey 2012 dodge journey

2012 Dodge Journey by U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

For growing families, a three-row SUV with seating for seven to eight passengers is non-negotiable. However, shopping for three-row SUVs on a budget can be tricky since they can have a higher price tag due to additional seating capacity. Thankfully, the used car market offers reasonably good three-row SUVs that won’t break the bank. In this case, we recommend checking out the Dodge Journey.

Do Dodge Journeys have 3rd row seating?

Yes, the Dodge Journey is a three-row SUV with a seating capacity of up to seven passengers. The Journey is also one of its class’s most affordable three-row SUVs. For this post, we walk you through the Dodge Journey and everything you need to know about its 3rd row seating. Unfortunately, the Dodge Journey was discontinued; its last model is the 2020 version. With that said, we’ll mainly focus on the 2020 Dodge Journey model year for this guide.

Do Dodge Journeys Have 3rd Row Seating?

Yes, the Dodge Journey is a midsize SUV with a third row of seats that can accommodate up to seven passengers. Here’s what the 2020 Dodge Journey looks like in terms of cargo and passenger capacity:

  • First row: 40.8 inches (legroom), 40.8 inches (headroom)
  • Second row: 36.1 inches (legroom), 39.9 inches (headroom)
  • Third row: 23.4 inches (legroom), 37.7 inches (headroom)
  • Total passenger volume: 124 cu-ft.

As you can see, the Journey’s third row is rather cramped compared to the first two rows. The first two rows offer adequate space, but the same can’t be said for the third row. Like many smaller three-row SUVs, the Journey’s third-row seating is best reserved for small children. We can’t just imagine a full-grown adult or larger teens having a relaxing time in the third row. Those in the second row will likely have to sacrifice some legroom to fit passengers in the third row.

Thankfully, the Dodge Journey’s interior offers a good deal of versatility. The third row is foldable, giving you usable cargo space for your gear and luggage. This is good because you only have 10.7 cu-ft of space behind the third row. Folding the third row in a 50 ⁄ 50 split will give you access to 37.0 cu-ft behind the second row. Lastly, the second row is also foldable for a total of 67.6 cu-ft of cargo space. Additional cargo space is available via the underfloor storage bin under the rear cargo area.

Dodge Journey Interior Features

The 2020 Dodge Journey comes with a standard Uconnect infotainment system which gathered praise from critics and customers because it’s an easy-to-use system. However, the standard screen is only a 4.3-inch which is much smaller than many modern infotainment systems. The Crossroad trim brings an upgrade to an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen that features AM/FM radio, SiriusXM support, MP3 support, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB port. The Dodge Journey doesn’t support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A six-speaker setup is the standard sound system with a subwoofer for all Journey trims, with an optional upgrade to a premium sound system. Customers can also pay for a rear-seat entertainment package with a 9.0-inch display for passenger entertainment.

The 2020 Journey’s interior is far from upscale. There are a lot of low-quality bits inside the Journey, from hollow door-trim panels to plasticky shifters. The cabin quality certainly gives the impression that you get what you pay for. Even upmarket options like a power-adjustable passenger seat and heated seats are surprisingly missing from a relatively newer model.

Dodge Journey 3rd-Row Seating: Is It Enough?

At this point, we hope we answered your question, “Do Dodge Journeys have 3rd row seating?” While the Journey does offer third rows of seating, is it enough?

The Journey’s selling point is that it’s the least expensive SUV that provides three rows of seats for seven passengers, and that’s about it. Unfortunately, the Journey’s third row is insufficient for large and growing families. With only 23.4 inches of legroom, the third row can only realistically accommodate small children – teens and adults will not have a comfortable time in the third row. We’ve read reports that second-row passengers will have to give up some of their legroom to seat people in the third row, even children.

Therefore, we can only recommend the Journey SUV if you have a young family or are not planning to use the third row. If you want more passenger space, you’re better off shopping for the Journey’s competitor.

Alternative Three-Row SUVs for the Dodge Journey

As you can see, the Journey SUV is quite flawed and limited. Below are some of the best alternatives for the 2020 Dodge Journey:

2020 Kia Sorento

Compared to the 2020 Sorento, the 2020 Journey is an ancient SUV. Although the Journey is less expensive, the price difference versus the Sorento isn’t that big. For starters, the Sorento offers 154.2 cu-ft of passenger space comfortably beats the Journey’s 124 cu-ft of space. The Sorento’s 31.7 inches of third-row legroom dwarfs the Journey’s cramped 23.4 inches of legroom.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

The outdated 2020 Journey is worth skipping in favor of any other SUVs in its class – even more so with the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The VW Tiguan is a highly-rated SUV that offers three rows of seating as standard if you get the front-wheel drive model. Meanwhile, the third row is optional if you buy the all-wheel drive model. The 2020 Tiguan was praised for its refined driving experience and top-notch fuel economy. Best of all, it’s a reasonably priced SUV that can compete with the Journey’s price point.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander is another solid alternative to the Dodge Journey. Although the Outlander has a third row of seating, it doesn’t have a much larger space than the Journey with its 125.5 cu-ft of passenger space. However, the Outlander has the upper hand regarding fuel economy and the available plug-in hybrid option.
