5 Ways Doja Cat’s Scarlet Tour Flaunts Her Creative Versatility

Doja Cat lit up Halloween in San Francisco with the opening night of her Scarlet Tour. Ahead of her national run of shows, GRAMMY.com details how the Scarlet Tour shows off the height of Doja Cat's performing prowess.

There’s no better way to spend Halloween night than at a Doja Cat concert. Shifting away from Planet Her ’s starry divine feminine theme, the rapper’s latest album, Scarlet , introduced a dark, more sinister aesthetic — perfect for kicking off her Scarlet Tour during spooky season.

For her spine-chilling tour’s opening night, the GRAMMY-winning artist touched down in San Francisco’s Chase Center, welcoming thousands of thrilled fans in creative costumes. Although Doja has expressed her distaste for pop music, the show remained holistic, representing all facets of her musical identity while also representing her creative crimson rebirth.

From the viral disco pop of "Say So" to the lovelorn hip-hop of "Agora Hills," Doja has proven herself to be a musical shapeshifter at the top of her game — and the Scarlet Tour exhibits Doja's  reimagined artistic vision with full force. To celebrate the beginning of her 24-date tour, which ends Dec. 13 in Chicago, here are five ways the Scarlet Tour spotlights Doja’s mastery of performance.

She Can Shift Emotional Tone In The Blink Of An Eye

If there was one word to describe the Scarlet Tour’s opening sequence, it would be volatile. Impassioned, Doja spat opener "WYM Freestyle" with precision before diving into a popular Scarlet lead single. Even though she stood alone on a massive stage, the rapper easily filled the entire arena with a feverish, contagious vigor.

Although Doja split the evening into five thematic acts, the concert glided along smoothly, and its flow spoke to her monumental mood control. Even when she performed the most contrasting songs next to each other — for instance, shifting from the hypnotizing "Streets" to the enraged "F— The Girls (FTG)" — Doja managed to make the concert flow.

She’s A Master of Reinvention, But Never Forgets Her Past

Everyone loves oldies but goodies — and before the Scarlet Tour kicked off, many fans felt nervous about Doja excluding her older music from the setlist, following the artist’s statements about being disillusioned by pop music.

But to her audience’s delight, Doja delivered. After kicking off opening night with two Scarlet tracks, her third song struck nerves: "Tia Tamera." The fun fan favorite signaled that Doja’s setlist wouldn’t disregard her older music, despite how she might feel about the songs in retrospect.

Beyond spitting "Tia Tamera," Doja’s dive into her catalog proved to be more than just throwbacks to satisfy her hungry crowds: it also mirrored her ever-changing style. During performances of several earlier hits, the rapper altered the originals to idiosyncratic, contemporary versions.

Doja debuted a lovely tropical version of "Say So" halfway through her set, and she turned up the energy even further during the second halves of both "Woman" and "Streets," opting for more intense, fiery endings. Throughout the Scarlet Tour, Doja expertly demonstrated her ability to reinvent her older hits to fit her current musical style.

She Dramatically Executes Her Aesthetic Vision

Although Doja surprisingly didn’t have any costume changes or Halloween shoutouts, the concert expertly executed the rapper’s creative, unearthly vision.

From flickers of haunted houses onscreen to eerie apparitions cloaked in red, the show channeled the spine-chilling energy of Scarlet with lucid aesthetics. Immense, mysterious props were especially memorable; early on in the show, a massive metal spider hovered above Doja, and later, an unsettling bloody eyeball roamed the stage.

The stage involved other explosive surprises — there seemed to be no shortage of fireworks, and a ring of fire blazed around Doja for her most intense performances. If one thing’s for sure, the Scarlet Tour brought the heat.

She Gets To The Point

Even though the Scarlet Tour flew by in just an hour and a half, the concert still felt like a graphic representation of her reimagined artistic journey.

In total, Doja ran through a fabulous 24 songs in five acts, whisking her audience through lush hip-hop and lighthearted pop. Bending genres to her will, she offered striking performances with few breaks.

Though the concert was relatively succinct for an arena show, it felt intentional in its move through her versatile discography. Doja’s evolution as an artist has been anything but brief, yet the concert’s brevity still made for a strong tribute to the progression of her musical eras.

Her Stage Presence Is Unmatched

Anyone who sells out an arena is sure to have a renowned stage presence, but Doja’s is especially unforgettable.

Sometimes it’s easy for headliners to get swallowed on stage by fanfare and props, but Doja radiated the addictive confidence of a seasoned performer. Whether she was raging solo on stage or surrounded by her top-notch dancers, Doja was undeniably always the center of attention.

Her marvelous breath control earned her well-deserved clamor, especially during the whirlwind bridges from Planet Her ’s "Get Into It (Yuh)" and "Need To Know." Doja also flexed her esteemed dance skills, moving fluidly and breezily across the stage in teetering black heels.

Some of the show’s best moments, however, were unchoreographed. Although Doja tended to stick to her darker persona throughout the concert, there were times when a blushing smile would sneak onto her face — and those moments of joy made even a massive arena feel intimate.

7 Incredible Sets From Coachella 2024 Weekend 1: Doja Cat, No Doubt, Raye & More

With a weekend full of surprise guests, exciting reunions and breakout performances from first-time performers, this weekend in Indio was one for the books. Read on for seven of the top performances at the first weekend of Coachella 2024.

While every headliner at last year’s Coachella held some sort of historical cultural significance, Coachella 2024 ’s roster instead represented a series of graduations from opening slots and side stages to top-tier main stage titan status.

Friday featured Lana Del Rey , whose sole previous Coachella performance was at the Outdoor Theatre in 2014. Saturday was capped by Tyler, The Creator appearing for the third time in Indio (his last appearance as runner up to Haim and Beyoncé on the main stage in 2018). And on Sunday, Doja Cat occupied the uppermost spot after her penultimate main stage appearance in 2022.

Yet Coachella Weekend 1 this year’s attendees got astronomically more bang for their buck than they counted on, due to a surprise-guest-heavy lineup. The bulk of those special moments came from  A-list talent, from Billie Eilish with Lana Del Rey to Olivia Rodrigo with No Doubt , Justin Bieber joining Tems , Kesha with Reneé Rapp, most of the Fugees performing alongside YG Marley, Will Smith performing "Men in Black" with J Balvin … the list goes on.

When all was said and done, the diversity, quality and impact of the weekend’s performances were tremendous. Even without elite bonus appearances, there were plenty of performances — quite a few of them newcomers, recent buzzbands and imminent breakthroughs — that made this year’s Coachella more than worthy of an early accolade for one of the first-rate fests of 2024. Read on for seven of the best sets from Coachella 2024.

Faye Webster Thrills Loyal Fans With Supreme Confidence

Underneath the shaded canopy of the Mojave Tent, Faye Webster held her sprawling audience in the palm of her hand during her Coachella debut on Friday. Deafening cheers rang out at the start of every song, which seemed to infuse the 26-year-old singer/songwriter with a level of energy unparalleled up to this point in her career.

Webster deftly worked her way through 11 tracks, each one received with wild cheers from fans, who sang with such gusto that they often nearly overpowered her own vocals. The crossroads of her confidence and creativity fully manifested during closing tune "Kingston," which saw her pausing to let the audience belt out the remainder of the line, a beckoning gesture that exuded self-assuredness.

Notably, three of six new songs ("Wanna Quit All the Time," "He Loves Me Yeah!" and "Lego Ring") from her recently released fifth album Underdressed at the Symphony were live debuts. The fact that Webster saved them for Coachella showed a clear intention to ensure the set was extra special. Beyond any shadow of doubt, she succeeded.

Lana Del Rey Taps Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste & Others For Standout Friday Set

With her notoriously downtempo demeanor, Lana Del Rey wasn’t the obvious choice for a Friday headlining spot on the main stage, but when all was said and done, her 20-song set delivered plenty to position her as a standout performer.

Dressed in an elegant baby blue gown, her entrance — a slow ride on the back of a motorbike through the lanes of the crowd all the way to the stage — worked wonders to build excitement. And her first three song choices, a shortened version of "Without You" (not performed since 2014) and two more gems from the vault — "West Coast" (debuted 10 years ago to the day at her first Coachella appearance) and her superb cover of Sublime’s "Doin’ Time" — signaled her intention to make this show a truly special occasion (neither of the latter two tunes have appeared on a setlist since 2019).

From there it was a parade of hits culled from her robust catalog, as the GRAMMY-nominated singer waltzed her way across the expanse of a fairytale palace stage production, at several points venturing up flights of stairs to a towering terrace. Four of her 10 albums feature production from Jack Antonoff (who played with Bleachers on Saturday), so it was unsurprising when he took the helm of the white grand piano toward the end for a strikingly serene duet with a hologram Lana on "Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have — But I Have It."

Jon Batiste (who performed his own set on Saturday) also assisted on piano for an alluring take on "Candy Necklace," but the pinnacle moment arrived during performances of "ocean eyes" and "Video Games" alongside surprise guest Bil l ie Eilish . Sitting side by side atop a balcony, the two harmonized through much of those tracks, and the occasions when Lana sat back to let Billie sing several sections solo were absolutely arresting. The two superstars stared adoringly at each other throughout, clearly just as awe-inspired by the unprecedented collaboration as the audience, which erupted with rapturous applause that rivaled the decibels of the set’s glittering fireworks finale.

Raye Races Toward Superstardom During Emotional Debut

After just one song of Raye’s Saturday afternoon performance, there was no question that her Coachella debut would be remembered as one of the most striking in recent years. The British songwriter and chanteuse, who shattered the record for most wins and nominations in a single year at this year’s BRIT Awards, poured every ounce of her soul into her 45-minute set. The crowd inside the Mojave tent hung on every note and went absolutely berserk all the way from the sultry intro of "The Thrill is Gone" to gloriously anthemic closer "Escapism."

Backed by a powerhouse band of eight backup singers, three string players, four brass aces and the standard guitar, drums and bass, each song was a showstopper. Without question, the most impactful moment came on "Ice Cream Man," which deals with her own experience with sexual assault and rape.

"I want you to know it’s not an easy song to sing," she started. And before she could continue, the audience released a loud roar of support, to the point that the singer shed tears. When she composed herself, she continued, "But it’s important to be loud .. and to be brave. This allows me to be loud about something I’ve been quiet about my entire life. I am very f—ing strong."

That moment — which culminated into a big band-style belter that evoked the power of Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday — likewise drew tears from many in the audience. Further, it defined Raye as an artist destined for superstardom on the merits of genuine talent, an infinitely infectious spirit, and incomparably hard work ethic. To that end, it should be no surprise she’s the songwriter behind tunes from GRAMMY-winning artists including Beyoncé , no big deal.

Sublime Revives Their Definitive Sound Alongside Jakob Nowell

Though many were referring to Sublime’s Saturday afternoon appearance on the Coachella main stage as a "reunion" in the days leading up to the festival, new frontman Jakob Nowell — son of the band’s deceased original singer Bradley Nowell — made it abundantly clear that wasn’t precisely the case.

"My name is Jakob Nowell and this is Sublime," he said following the conclusion of opening song "April 29, 1992," gesturing toward the beloved Southern California ska-punk band’s surviving members bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh.

Read more: Sublime's Jakob Nowell On Leading His Father's Legendary Band & What To Expect At Coachella

His resistance to co-opt his dad’s legacy was admirable, which was an issue for some when Rome Ramirez joined Wilson and Gaugh in 2009 to form Sublime with Rome , a chapter that ended for those original members when Gaugh left the band in 2011 and Wilson subsequently exited in February. With all the pieces in place, the next hour played out as a fantastically fun alliance of old and new.

Jakob sounded strikingly like his dad during most moments, though he asserted his own spin on the classic sound by adding a hardcore-esque growl at various points in the set. Among the 14 songs, they revived early-era material that hadn’t been played live since the mid '90s, including "Date Rape," "Badfish" and "Doin’ Time." One cut, "Romeo," had not been performed live since 1988. The band likewise included tunes that Bradley never got to perform from the band’s final self-titled album, including some of their biggest commercial successes. Tracks such as "What I Got" and "Santeria" were sung by thousands, a chorus oozing with celebratory mass catharsis.

By the end, there could be only one conclusion: the most definitive version of a revived Sublime has arrived and, should they choose to continue on, they’ll be received by fans with open arms.

No Doubt Snatches Headliner Status During Jubilant Reunion

Though the reunion of No Doubt was billed as the runner-up to Tyler, the Creator’s Saturday night finisher, it’s absolutely valid to argue that the beloved Southern California outfit — playing their first show since 2015 — was the evening’s true headliner. The eye-popping expanse and unerring enthusiasm of the audience (the largest of the weekend), combined with the group’s sheer joy and explosive energy, drove the feeling home.

Every member of the core group — bassist Tony Kanal , guitarist Tom Dumont , drummer Adrian Young and frontwoman Gwen Stefani — emanated pure exultation, wide grins plastered permanently on their faces. Stefani was especially fired up; after the band powered through five treasured tracks — including opener "Hella Good" (performed at the end of long catwalk), "Ex-Girlfriend," and "Different People" (featured for the first time since 2009) — the singer stopped to address the sea of screaming fans.

"Wow … you showed up to Coachella Saturday night 2024 to see No Doubt play together on this stage for the first time in nine years. Are you crazy?!" Stefani said. "If I could just somehow explain the amount of love [we feel] and how much I wanna slap the s— out of you guys tonight!"

The sentiment was meant endearingly, but every song did hit intensely. In particular, a rendition of "Bathwater" featuring special guest Olivia Rodrigo — as hyped as Stefani with her never-ending spinning and bouncing antics — left a lasting mark. For old school fans, the Return to Saturn single was a special treat, and with Rodrigo in the mix, it elicited equal exuberance from younger audience members.

For the finale of the 16-song setlist, the band fulfilled the promise of euphoric nostalgia with a hard-hitting trio of tracks off 1995 breakthrough third album Tragic Kingdom : "Just a Girl," "Don’t Speak" and "Spiderwebs." The timeless tunes incited a sudden surge of fans toward the stage, and one would’ve been hard pressed to spot anyone not participating in the jubilant singalongs. It was a moment of multi-generational unity and unbridled joy — unquestionably unforgettable, and hopefully just the precursor to a triumphant new era of No Doubt.

Olivia Dean Enters the Stateside Festival Scene With Humbling Authenticity

Watching the first few moments of British neo-soul singer Olivia Dean’s Sunday afternoon performance in the Gobi tent, you’d never know this was her first American festival appearance. And what an incredible debut, at one of the States’ most prestigious festivals with only one album under belt (2023’s Messy ) to boot. The 25-year-old stunned with utmost finesse and confidence, working the stage like a long-established diva and immediately eliciting rapturous applause after each of the first two songs, "OK Love You Bye" and "Echo."

While it can sometimes be off-putting when an artist introduces every song with a tidbit explaining what it’s about, this method had the opposite effect for Dean. Her context made each moment feel intensely personal, and the audience reaction was overwhelming. One of many tunes with a distinctly Motown bop, "The Hardest Part," was prefaced with the remark that it "recently changed [her] life," and spoke to the process of overcoming grief. After the final note was sung, she received a deafening standing ovation, prompting her to endearingly cover her face in response. And there was so much power in her anecdote before "Carmen," a tribute to how her grandmother made everything possible for her.

"My granny came to London when she was 18 … had never been on a plane … left her life behind and had my mom, and my mom had me," she said, already being drowned out by cheers before the final remark: "This song is for my granny and anyone brave enough to move and any immigrant in the crowd right now."

As she wrapped up her short set with the bewitching single "Dive," the sun broke through the clouds, illuminating her with the loveliest natural spotlight to complement a performer who already naturally, effortlessly shines on her own.

Doja Cat Exudes Total Command & Flawless Flow For Sunday Finale

It cannot be overstated: Doja Cat’s fest-closing performance on the main stage was a visionary masterpiece, and the strongest headlining set of the first weekend. That wasn’t certain from the stripped-down beginning moments when the GRAMMY-winning singer/rapper appeared on a circular b-stage mid-audience, dressed in a hazmat suit and encircled by a black and yellow biohazard pattern.

But excitement built steadily as she bombastically delivered opening song "ACKNOWLEDGE ME," which, even in an abbreviated format, lived up to its title and created a palpable air of anticipation. From there, she strutted back toward the main stage via a connected catwalk, meeting briefly in the middle with South African quintet the Joy (set to release their self-titled debut album on June 21) offering up fiery raps amidst the group’s arresting a cappella .

Shortly after, Doja appeared on the main stage dressed in a knee-length platinum blonde weave, flanked by an army of dancers who all wore matching getups covered in the same synthetic hair. The effect when they all converged, their movements completely in sync, created an optical illusion of one enormous hairy creature moving across the stage to punctuate the ferocity of "Demons."

That was just the first taste of a breathtaking series of visual sequences over the course of the 70-minute show, each profoundly enhanced by cinematography that created the effect of watching a top-quality music video on the main stage’s massive screens. If you witnessed the camera work during Beyoncé’s Homecoming show back in 2018 or Rosalía’s production in 2023, you’ll understand the aesthetic.

Other key moments when the video work was utterly astonishing arrived during the live debut of "OKLOSER" (one of five first-time song features) where the previously smooth camera went rogue, shakily weaving through the gang of dancers to create the effect of maneuvering through a chaotic house party; again during "Attention" as the lens wove through dancers in fur coats wielding Cruella de Vil-inspired cabrioles until it settled on Doja at the end of the line; and finally during closing track, "Wet Vagina," where Doja and her dancers rolled and writhed (in perfect choreographed unison) on the b-stage filled with brown mud, the sequel ending in a stunning birds-eye shot.

Backtracking a few moments earlier, maybe the most jaw-dropping production element came on "WYM Freestyle" in the form of a giant T-Rex skeleton following Doja down the catwalk while flames erupted from the stage behind her. The precise reason for that wasn’t evident, but it certainly boosted the ferocity of her raw rap delivery.

The unending visual feast only served to amplify Doja’s already flawless flow. She never missed a vocal mark, whether singing or rapping. She didn’t even once pause to banter with the audience, creating the effect of total focus and command. Big bonuses: 21 Savage materializing mid-set to serve up "n.h.i.e.," Teezo Touchdown’s cameo on "MASC" and A$AP Rocky (who likewise performed with Tyler, the Creator on Saturday) swooping in for "URRRGE!!!!!!!!!!" before Doja dazzled with super-hit "Paint the Town Red."

When all was said and done, Doja Cat more-than-earned her graduation to festival headliner, and while she’s already set for an arena tour this year, she’s clearly destined to stun at stadiums not far in the future.

How R&B Took Over The 2024 GRAMMYs: From Best New Artist Nominees To The GRAMMY Stage

More than just a set of categories, R&B is a global influence felt across fields at this year’s ceremony. Women are at the forefront, the genre's vets are making a comeback and the R&B Categories are absolutely stacked.

R&B is poised to make a huge impact at the 2024 GRAMMYs .

Just a couple of years after critics questioned whether R&B was dead , stars such as SZA , Victoria Monét and Coco Jones are cleaning up with multiple nominations across fields. Women are at the forefront of the current R&B movement, and there’s a multigenerational reverence for recording artists with longevity.

And they’re not the only ones making noise.

At the 66th GRAMMY Awards, the genre has a broad reach that extends even beyond the categories that have R&B in the title. The genre's sound is present in nominated works in the new Best African Music Performance category, and in Songwriters and producers who excel in this realm are being recognized alongside colleagues who stand out in pop, country, and Latin circles.

R&B will have a place on the GRAMMY stage, too. SZA will be among the performers during the 2024 GRAMMYs telecast, while Robert Glasper , Terrace Martin , Jordin Sparks and gospel/Christian R&B artist Kirk Franklin will perform during the Premiere Ceremony .

Ahead of Music's Biggest Night on Feb. 4 , read on for the myriad ways R&B will be a force to be reckoned with.

2024 GRAMMYs: Explore More & Meet The Nominees

R&b’s impact is heard across grammy categories.

Comeback queen SZA is the most-nominated artist at the 2024 GRAMMYs, receiving nine nods . SZA's nominations  extend beyond the R&B categories into the general field and pop sphere: Her "Kill Bill" is nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year, her sophomore full-length SOS is up for Best Progressive R&B Album and Album Of The Year , both alongside Janelle Monáe ’s The Age of Pleasure . And "Ghost In The Machine," a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers , is vying for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Singer/songwriter Victoria Monét is not far behind in nominations, appearing in seven categories including Best New Artist . She’s also nominated for Record Of The Year and Best R&B Song for "On My Mama," Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non Classical for Jaguar II , Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Hollywood" and Best R&B Performance for "How Does It Make You Feel."

Although she is vying for Best New Artist, Monét isn't a first-time nominee. She was nominated twice at the 62nd GRAMMYs for her work with Ariana Grande (Album Of The Year for thank u, next and Record Of The Year for "7 rings") and for Best R&B Song at the 63rd GRAMMYs for "Do It" by Chloe x Halle . Her current nominations  are her first that acknowledge her own solo work.

"I have GRAMMY dreams, I have award show performance dreams, I have world tour dreams," Monét told GRAMMY.com in 2020. "But really just being able to make music a career, and doing what I love—it’s a privilege. I think I’m just trying to keep that perspective, because you can really become wrapped up in this."

First-time GRAMMY nominee Coco Jones is up for golden gramophones in five different categories this year, including Best New Artist alongside Monét. She is also nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance for her smoldering "ICU," Best R&B Album for What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe) and Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Simple" with Babyface (a single from his Best R&B Album nominee Girls’ Night Out ).

"Being a GRAMMY-nominated artist changes everything. It’s such a different creative mindset when the world says, ‘You’re good, we like what you do,’" Jones recently told GRAMMY.com. "It’s like a gold star. It makes you want to work harder, it makes you wanna continue to impress, and it makes you impressed with yourself, too."

R&B has a strong presence in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category, which honors solo or collaborative performances that use rapping as well as R&B melodies. This year’s nominees include "Attention" by Doja Cat and "Low" by SZA, which respectively find the stars doing both the rapping and singing duties. Other nominees in the category are "Sittin’ On Top Of The World," the Brandy-sampling song by Nigeria’s Burna Boy and rapper 21 Savage ; "Spin Bout U" by Drake and 21 Savage, which utilizes the R&B song "Give Me Your Lovin" by Oobie; and "All My Life" by Lil Durk featuring J. Cole , a different tune for the drill rapper.

Two of the nominees for Best African Music Performance , a new category for the 2024 GRAMMYs , bring an international take on R&B mixed with regional styles from the continent: "Rush" by Nigerian singer Ayra Starr and "Water" by South African artist Tyla . The latter song was written by an international team of songwriters including American producer Chris "Tricky" Stewart (who has won three GRAMMYs for his work with Beyoncé and received nominations  for releases by Rihanna and Katy Perry ).

"I did not expect a whole GRAMMY nomination, especially so soon," Tyla told Complex . "So it's really just a blessing that I was able to be nominated and be one of the first in the category because it's a new category. It's amazing for South Africa especially." She added in the interview that she’d love to collaborate with fellow American R&B stars SZA and Summer Walker .

Like Victoria Monét , Walker has her first nomination for her own work this year: Best R&B Album for Clear 2: Soft Life EP . Walker was previously nominated for Album Of The Year for her writing work on Kendrick Lamar ’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers .

R&B Grooves Behind The Scenes

This year, GRAMMY nominees with significant R&B experience and accolades appear in both the Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical and the Producer Of The Year, Non Classical categories. Both categories are part of the general field this year, rounding out the new "big six" categories.

Nominees for Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical include the Virgin Islands-born Theron Thomas , whose place in the category is attributed to songs including Tyla’s "Been Thinking," Chlöe Bailey and Future ’s "Cheatback," Chlöe and Missy Elliott’ s "Told Ya," Ciara and Chris Brown ’s "How We Roll" and Sekou’s "You and I." Thomas has previously been nominated for his work with Lizzo (Album Of The Year for Special and Song Of The Year for "About Damn Time") at the 63rd GRAMMYs and Best Rap Song for Saweetie and Doja Cat ’s "Best Friend" at the 64th GRAMMYs.

In the Producer Of The Year-Non Classical category, Brooklyn’s Dernst "D’Mile" Emile II received a nomination in recognition of his work on Victoria Monét’s Jaguar II . Emile has an impressive five GRAMMY wins and 17 nominations under his belt. Three of his wins are with Silk Sonic for their slow jam, "Leave The Door Open," which won Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best R&B Song.

He also won golden gramophones for Song Of The Year for "I Can’t Breathe" by H.E.R. and Best Progressive R&B Album for his work on Table for Two by Lucky Daye at the at the 63rd and 64th GRAMMYs, respectively.

The engineers of Alicia Keys ’ The Diary of Alicia Keys 20 — an anniversary release of the star’s second album — are nominated for Best Immersive Audio Album, a category created in 2005 and renamed in 2019. The new version of Diary is available in 360RA and Dolby Atmos.

Last year, Chicago house DJ, producer and remixer Terry Hunter was nominated for Best Remixed Recording for his remix of "Break My Soul" by Beyoncé. In 2024, his remix of "Workin’ Hard" by Mariah Carey is in the same category. The song, which appears on Carey’s Music Box: 30th Anniversary Editio n, tosses the original’s boom bap hip-hop beat and adds robust instrumentation that lives comfortably in the Venn diagram space that R&B and house shares.

R&B Veterans Get Their Shine

R&B’s longevity will be on full display at the 2024 GRAMMYs via nominees who have withstood personal and professional obstacles to remain relevant in the music business for decades.

With 11 GRAMMY wins and 53 nominations — including three at the 2024 GRAMMYs — Babyface can always be counted on to stay current with today’s R&B trends . He supports younger artists such as Coco Jones, Ella Mai and Baby Tate on Girls’ Night Out , which is nominated for Best R&B Album, and he is a producer of SZA’s Best R&B Song contender, "Snooze." His current work welcomes back old fans and feeds new listeners who have a taste to explore nostalgia.

Chris Brown won his first golden gramophone for Best R&B Album at the 54th GRAMMYs in 2012 for F.A.M.E. , and dedicated the win to those who have stuck by him. Twelve years later, he is up for Best R&B Performance for "Summer Too Hot" — his 22nd GRAMMY nomination.

To take it even further back to R&B in the rhythm & blues sense, check out I Am Everything , a movie about the late rock and R&B progenitor Little Richard (1932-2020) that is up for Best Music Film. Little Richard was a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and a GRAMMY Hall of Fame inductee. And Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos , a collection of various artists from the seminal record label founded in 1957, is a contender for Best Historical Album.

GRAMMY vets Earth, Wind & Fire have six wins and now 18 nominations under their sparkly belts; the latest nomination is for Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Hollywood" by Victoria Monét. The multi-generational song also features a cooing contribution at the end from Monét’s daughter, Hazel. The two-year-old would become the youngest-ever GRAMMY winner, should "Hollywood" come out on top in the category.

With a live performance by SZA and so much influence and representation across categories, it’s truly R&B’s year at the GRAMMYs. Tune in on Sun., Feb. 4 to watch it on CBS.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 31: Doja Cat kicks off The Scarlet Tour on October 31, 2023 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Dana Jacobs/Getty Images for Live Nation)

As Doja Cat ‘s “Scarlet Tour” touched down at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena Thursday night for what was only its second date, fans were still learning about just what shape her first arena headlining shows would take. Title cards appearing on the big screens announced that it would be broken down into five parts — Acts I, II, III, IV and V — but it took a while to figure out whether these chapter stops would involve big costume and production design changes, as might be typical on a big diva tour.

Popular on Variety

Whether you walk away thinking that Doja Cat has exposed her inner being, with all those internal organs, is another thing. At Thursday’s show, she rarely spoke to the audience, except to tell them she loves them. (A few of them might have thought, “Really? Tell us again!,” given that she did seem to be actually trolling her fan base a few times on social media this year.) There was one downright hilarious moment of spontaneity during the show, when she asked the audience to turn off the lights on their phones — and of course they misheard and did the opposite, because how many performers nowadays aren’t having a moment in their shows where they solicit fans to power up and form a wavy starfield? “I said, ‘Lights off,’ but that’s OK,” she elaborated, and she and the crowd shared a good laugh. You could wish for more moments of personal interaction like that in the set… although, given Doja Cat’s sometimes unnerving unpredictability on social media, hoping for more spoken commentary in concert could be a be-careful-what-you-wish-for situation.

But, generally speaking, it’s no major setback that she’s not employing the gift of gab on this tour. It’s a very vibey show, and get-to-know-me! monologues could well get in the way of that. (Even the sound, which didn’t allow a great deal of her lyrics to be thoroughly intelligible, contributed to the ultimately pleasurable experience of focusing on mood and visuals, versus just how much braggadocio or provocation fills some of her new songs.) This is an all-business show, albeit one that eventually comes to feels fairly relaxed, even club-like, in the sections where she shifts out of hard-ass mode and settles more into being a playful R&B seductress.

The first two “acts” at Crypto were devoted primarily to her aggressive — and more recently emphasized — all-out hip-hop side. The more balladic fan favorite “Agora Hills,” with its more even mixture of rapped and sung content, also slipping in there toward the beginning, but otherwise, she’s looking to overpower for the first half-hour. “Scarlet,” the tour, is a twin to “Scarlet,” the album, in that regard. Both are marked by early passages where she’s a woman on a mission, to establish her rapper bona fides right at the outset, in an intense concentration. It’s understandable why she’s driven to start off this way: Doja Cat has made no secret of how she feels her pop success with “Planet Her” left her undervalued as a serious rapper, and so she’s out to overcompensate, if anything. She’s proven her point, and then some: How many could listen to the first third of “Scarlet” and not think she merits being listed in the company of a Megan or Cardi? But it’s also an unexpectedly crowded space to be moving into right now, and it’s not clear that her most profanely boastful or taunting songs quite carve out their own place in that category just yet.

Act II closes with her most celebrated rap number from prior to “Scarlet,” the “Planet Her” cut “Ain’t Shit,” the great sing-along — or rap-along — that a significant part of her demographically diverse audience dare not sing along to, for obvious reasons. From there, it moves into Act III, aka the pure oldies portion of the set, where she has concentrated the other four songs from “Planet Her” — those aforementioned pop smashes — plus the earlier disco-pop ditty that put her on the global map, “Say So.” This could go down as the part of the performance where Doja Cat has concentrated what we assume are the songs she doesn’t want to sing , given that she’s more or less gone on record that her biggest singles were sellouts and her audience fools for falling for it. Whether or not she meant that or this was just all part of the Big Troll, all these hits in Act III sound utterly terrific… and sound substantially different than you’d expect them to.

Being able to morph the earworms “Say So,” “Woman” and “Kiss Me More” into new arrangements is likely her way of satisfying audience expectations while also keeping them interesting for herself. They’re reworked enough that it might take you till about the end of the first chorus on some of them to recognize that it’s one of the dominant songs of the last five years being played, but they’re not quite so radicalized that anyone’s going to go home unhappy. I’ll admit that “Woman” was the only hit of Doja Cat’s that, on record, I could find a little cloying — but at Crypto.com, it might even have ended up being the most musically enjoyable surprise of the whole concert. With the fresh full-band takes on that and “Say So,” she’s going for something in the space between tribal and tropical — with dancer choreography to match — and the switched-up syncopation makes them a joy to behold anew. The closing number of this hits section, “Kiss Me More,” also takes it out of the realm of naughty gooeyness into something that feels meatier, even as Doja Cat makes a demand of the audience: “Kiss each other!” (The audience, not having been primed that there might be a Dodgers-style Kiss Cam, was a little slow to respond, but maybe next tour stop.)

And then, after we’ve had a bit of the softer side of Doja Cat, even with an outlying moment or two of relative vulnerability, the show ends with the new “Wet Vagina,” with its combination of Gucci, Louie, designer forks, the Met, “my new chest” and “really, really, really rough sex.” (It may not be your cup of tea but you’ve got to appreciate her emphasis on the reallys .)

Speaking of new chests, Doja Cat’s costuming choices bear mentioning. She starts the show, in that quasi-horror segment, wearing a black jacket over a painted breastplate with 3D boobs, looking real enough from a distance. That soon gives way to how she will appear for the remainder of the show: like a walking-and-dancing cadaver that has been stripped of all its skin, and looking just enough like something out of a medical textbook, except for, shall we say, a much more prominent vulva. Maybe this is a feminist power statement… or maybe it’s a recognition that, when you’re selling out arenas, sometimes you have to go the extra mile to reach the back row.

As for props, they’re surprisingly few for a show of this contemporary diva nature. Late in the show, five gigantic red ribbons drop from the rafters, and remain for the length of a number. Apart from that and the introductory spider, there’s just a giant eyeball with legs, trailed, of course, by a to-scale optic nerve. The eye doesn’t exactly menace Doja Cat so much as just kind of befriend her for a few minutes. (Going to guess this is not her homage to the Residents, but she does have her surprising avant-garde tastes, so who can say for sure.)

Extra points for the use of dancers and choreography, which isn’t exactly paralleled in any of the other big shows touring today. Knowing that Doja Cat is a big admirer of how someone like FKA Twigs expresses herself in dance may provide a clue as to what she intends with the physicality of the Scarlet Tour, which isn’t too easily contained or explained. The dancers’ garb is somewhat in contrast to the red motif of her own, or the overall color scheme; they look kind of like post-apocalyptic (or just post-punk) ragamuffins, with ripped, patchwork costumes. They lean, they move around a turntable, they semi-moonwalk, they break out of the pack for charming individual freestyle solos, and they do just about everything but the cliche sexualized movement so many tours fall back on. There is a clever showpiece moment where all the dancers crawl in a circle, and crawl over a stationary Doja Cat, one at a time… pausing as if they might be thinking about simulating sexual congress with her, before quickly moving on.

Like we said, it’s a busy show.

About Doja Cat:

GRAMMY award-winning global superstar Doja Cat made her first upload to Soundcloud in 2013 at just 16 years old . Having grown up in and around the LA area, she developed a knack for music by studying piano and dance as a kid and listening to the likes of Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and more. Signed to Kemosabe/RCA Records in 2014, she released her Purrr! EP and followed that with her debut album Amala in spring 2018, but it was her August 2018 release of “MOOO!” which catapulted her into the mainstream and was met with critical acclaim.

Doja Cat released her sophomore GRAMMY-nominated platinum album Hot Pink in November 2019 to mass critical acclaim; the album has garnered over 6 billion streams worldwide. It features “Streets”, the viral sensation that soundtracked the ‘Silhouette Challenge,’ one of the biggest TikTok trends to date and her GRAMMY-nominated #1 smash record “Say So” which has been RIAA certified 6x platinum and catapulted Doja into global superstardom.

With over 20 billion worldwide streams to date, Doja’s creativity and showmanship as a performer have been praised time and time again, she has delivered unique and show-stopping performances on nearly all the major Award Show stages and music festivals throughout the world. Doja Cat’s GRAMMY award-winning album Planet Her came out in June 2021 and dominated the charts, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and generated the highest first day Spotify streams for an album by a female rapper. GRAMMY award-winning “Kiss Me More” ft. SZA, the lead single off Planet Her is certified 5x platinum by the RIAA and hit #1 at Top 40 and Rhythm radio with over 2.2 billion streams worldwide. That fall, Doja Cat became the first rapper to have 3 songs in the Top 10 at Top 40 radio. Last year, “Woman” went to the top of the Billboard Rhythmic Airplay charts which ascended her to become the first women to have four #1 hits from one album, other hits including “You Right” with The Weeknd and “Need to Know.” She went on to land at #1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart for the first time. Amongst others, Doja has won 5 AMAs, 5 Billboard Music Award, 3 MTV VMAs, 3 BMI Awards, 2 MTV EMAs, 1 GRAMMY Award and 1 NAACP Image Award along with garnering a total of 16 GRAMMY Award nominations. Additionally, Doja has been nominated for 20 Billboard Music Awards, 10 MTV VMAs, 9 AMAs, 9 BET Awards, 8 MTV EMAs, 5 BMI Awards and dozens more. Most recently, Doja was named one of TIME100’s Most Influential People of 2023, where she was featured on the cover issue in April 2023 as well as performed at the TIME100 Gala in New York City.

Is there a setlist for 'The Scarlet Tour'?

Not yet. Doja Cat released her third album, "Planet Her," in 2021, which was followed by a song for the "Elvis" biopic in 2022 and a new single "Attention" in 2023.

Doja Cat teased her new album in a Time interview, but hasn't confirmed a name.

Doja Cat Will Take Over North American Arenas In 2023 For ‘The Scarlet Tour’ With Ice Spice And Doechii

Flisadam Pointer

Now that Doja Cat has everyone looking following the release of her new single, “ Attention ,” she’s ready to take this show on the road. The rapper is heading out on her first North American arena tour this fall. The Scarlet Tour, backed by Live Nation, will consist of 24 dates across the United States and Canada.

Set to launch on Halloween (October 31) in San Francisco, Doechii will appear as the supporting guest for half of the tour across the first ten or so nights. Then, Ice Spice will step in for the remaining dates as the opening act until the tour concludes in Chicago on December 13.

The Scarlet Tour also signifies two other important factors outside the major arena milestone. First, if the tour’s name reflects Doja Cat’s upcoming album’s name, the mystery has finally been put to bed. Secondly, The Scarlet Tour will mark Doja Cat’s return to touring since she was forced to pull out of The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour in 2022 due to medical reasons.

In an effort to combat bots, professional resellers, and scalpers, tickets for The Scarlet Tour will be using Ticketmaster’s Fan Verified system. Registration runs through Sunday, June 25, at 10 pm PST. Pre-sale codes will be sent out to random registrants starting on Wednesday, June 28. The general sale begins on Friday, June 30, at 10 am local time. Find more information here .

This fall, Doja Cat is embarking on her first North American arena tour. On June 23, the "Attention" singer announced "The Scarlet Tour," which will kick off on Halloween, Oct. 31, at San Francisco's Chase Center and run through Dec. 13 at Chicago's United Center. Along the way, the tour will also include stops in Atlanta, Miami, and Toronto, among other locales.

Additionally, certain stops on the 24-date tour will include appearances by Ice Spice and Doechii. Ticket pre-sales begin on June 28. In order to ensure as many tickets go to fans as possible, you can register now through Sunday, June 25 on the official site for a chance to receive a code that will give you access to the pre-sale event. A limited number of tickets will also be available while supplies last during the general on-sale event on June 30.

Doja Cat last released a new album, "Planet Her," in 2021, but she's been teasing more new music is on its way. On June 16, she released a new single, "Attention," which is the first song from her upcoming album "First of All." The "Woman" singer previously called her "Planet Her" and "Hot Pink" albums "cash-grabs" in a since-deleted May 9 tweet. In an earlier tweet, she hinted her new music is set to be far more personal than the songs she previously released .

When a fan asked her when she decided to make music for herself instead of others in a May 7 tweet, she responded, "After coachella when I felt so tired of doing a bunch of sh*t i didn't believe in and not telling my side or my story with my music." She added, "When I realized I hadn't done anything personal and that i was cranking out digestible pop hits for children on twitter to get into fights about."

Doja Cat at Coachella review – an electrifying tour de force

Empire Polo Club, Indio, California

Festival headliner delivered an A-game set, ignoring some of her mainstream hits yet bringing enough energy to power what some have called a middling year

D oja Cat took the Coachella main stage as the last official act to perform on Sunday’s bill, becoming the first female rapper to headline the festival. (She’s also only the second Black woman to do so, after Beyoncé in 2018.) Her closer rounded out a Sunday showcase of powerhouse female performers such as Reneé Rapp and Kesha duetting the recession banger TiK ToK – changing the opening line to “wake up in the morning saying fuck P Diddy” – and Victoria Monet grinding through a slick and ultra-sexy set, at one point receiving artfully-simulated oral sex from a background dancer.

It would be diplomatic to say that Doja maintains a distant relationship with her fans, who call themselves kittenz, though their fave does not sanction this moniker. Doja has told those who engage in parasocial relationships with the idea of her to “get off your phone and get a job” and “rethink everything” about their lives. Such boundary-setting has cost her some Instagram followers – around 300,000, to be exact, after going off on them in a social media tirade – but she could care less. “I feel free,” she wrote in an Instagram story after the snafu last year.

So it’s not surprising that Doja kept the stage banter to a minimum; about an hour in, she allowed a cursory, but seemingly genuine, “Thank you everyone.” That was about it. Still, Doja didn’t need to give us the cliched “it’s always been a dream to perform on this stage” monologue to show a deep respect for her audience. She did so by putting on a tour de force of a set, one that merged her musical talents with a clear knack for spectacle. I suspect it will become a staple on best-of-Coachella lists for years to come.

Doja first appeared by popping up on the stage’s extended catwalk, opening the night further back in the crowd, so those of us who hadn’t made it to the pit got a good look at her, too. She first wore an all-white hazmat suit. I thought it was a little Patrick Bateman; the girl next to me remarked that Doja looked like “a whole-ass sperm”.

Whatever the inspiration, she took that off pretty quickly, revealing extra-long blonde hair that went well past her butt, and a matching tunic also made of hair. Her background dancers matched in their own full hair suits, and when paired with their syncopated moves, the vibe was a little Bob Fosse meets Fraggle Rock. The South African a capella group The Joy encircled Doja during Shutcho, a diss track for haters that the group turned into a melodic, choir-like crescendo.

woman with long blonde hair and a large white top holds a microphone

Though Doja is a very 2020s pop star, terminally online and well-versed in the meme ecosystem, she didn’t rely on many gimmicks to make it through her set. The stage design was sparse and industrial. Her numerous outfit changes kept the same off-white palette, very Virgil Abloh-esque aesthetic: sculptural, sleek, architectural. My favorite look was a shaggy bikini set by Entire Studios that could have been a reference to Jane Fonda as Barbarella, or just a sartorial nod to the concept of merkins.

Doja tapped A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and a giant recreation of a T-Rex fossil for guest stars. During her penultimate song, Paint the Town Red, which samples Dionne Warwick’s 1963 hit Walk on By, I wondered for a moment if Doja was about to make my entire life and bring out the octogenarian legend herself. Instead, she did perhaps the opposite of that and rolled around in a sapphic mud pit with her background dancers for the finale, Wet Vagina.

Though Doja found mainstream success in the pop arena with early pandemic groovers like Kiss Me More and Say So, her Coachella set stuck to rap. Understandably, much of it came from her latest release, last year’s Scarlet. She described the album as a“masculine” response to her desire of moving away from pop princess-dom.

This meant that the fans who were there for Doja’s more accessible fare may have been disappointed by the exclusion of those songs – when the set ended, many mulled around the stage as if they were sure she’d come back rearing into Say So. (Again, she didn’t.)

But to me, it didn’t matter: Doja followed her gut, performed the songs she felt represented her best, all presented in an energetic, top-of-game triumph. For all the endless chatter this year about a lackluster lineup, Doja proved she’s worthy of a headline spot, so long as the people in charge – and, crucially, her fans – trust her to do it her own way.

Doja Cat Tells Fans Not to Bring Their Kids to Her Shows: ‘I Don't Make Music for Children'

Doja Cat isn't here to run a day-care center or host your family outings. The Scarlet rapper discussed the explicit nature of her music on X Friday (April 26), and pointed out that the lyrics she writes aren't necessarily for children's ears.

"idk what the f–k you think this is but i don't make music for children so leave your kids at home motherf–ker," she wrote without indicating what led her to share her thoughts on the matter.

The 28-year-old, who is gearing up for the overseas leg of her Scarlet Tour , then addressed some of the raunchy lyrics in her songs that don't make sense to have kids singing along to. "Im rapping about c-m why are you bringing your offspring to my show," Doja Cat continued . "Rappin about eatin d–k and pissin on his v-cut, leave your mistake at home*"

Doja Cat was one of the standout acts at Coachella 2024, rocking scanty attire and lingerie throughout her set while performing her hedonistic anthems. (She also recently launched a limited-edition Funko Pop! figurine modeled after her Coachella look.)

The "Say So" artist will headline a couple of radio concerts, including Hot 97's Summer Jam event, before heading to Europe for a handful of shows and festival sets in England, Amsterdam, Italy and more.

On Scarlet ‘s "F–k the Girls (FTG)," Doja Cat addressed how she shouldn't be looked at as a role model for kids. "Since when was y'all my bastard children/ Go ahead and raise y'all self/ Come get ya bada–kids, no need to mention," she raps.

Scarlet debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in October with 72,000 album units sold in the first week.

April 2024 Hot Shots ... Celebs Ripped And Ready For Summer!

Doja cat curses out parents: 'leave your kids at home mf', doja cat my music is rated r ... keep your kids away from my shows.

Doja Cat is fuming about parents who have the nerve to bring kids to her concerts, and then complain about what they see -- after all, she has a hit entitled "Wet Vagina" for cryin' out loud!!!

On Friday, Doja used equally colorful language while lashing out at adults who, apparently, can't find able-bodied babysitters.

It's unclear what exactly set her off, but her recent Coachella performances back up her rant.

Doja bumped and grinded across a muddy stage wearing nothing but lingerie, and made no apologies for p-popping in full view of cameras and her front-row fans.

Of course, all this fuss could also be a shock marketing ploy for her "Scarlet" tour, which is set to hit Europe this summer, but her anger sounds legit.

No doubt, you're gonna get people's attention, Doja, when ya start referring to their kids as "mistakes" and all. 😳

Doja Cat Calls Out Parents For Taking Their Kids To Her Concerts

Doja Cat doesn’t want parents bringing their children to her concerts, and for good reason. Hopping on Twitter this morning (April 26), the artist took a moment to clarify her target demographic.

“[I don’t know] what the f**k you think this is, but I don’t make music for children, so leave your kids at home, motherf**ker,” she shared. A separate tweet read, “I’m rapping about cum; why are you bringing your offspring to my show?”

She added, “[I’m] rappin’ about eatin’ d**k and pissin’ on his V-cut. Leave your mistake at home.” Doja also traded words with a few of her fans after she mistakenly wrote “V-cute” in the initial post. “You’re nothing,” the “Attention” rapper told one account, calling another “see-through.”

you're see through — DOJA CAT (@DojaCat) April 26, 2024

Doja has consistently pushed the boundaries with her music over the years, whether for better or worse. For example, in the visuals for “ Paint The Town Red ,” the Los Angeles native cozied up with the Grim Reaper while crooning, “Mm, she the devil/ She a bad lil’ b**ch, she a rebel.” Elsewhere, “Demons” from Scarlet prompted devil-worshipping allegations, which she addressed during an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden.

“I did it on purpose, and it’s this big ruse to make people react,” she said. “When the f**k did I say that I was a Satanist? Or even go marching outside the church? When the f**k did I say that? It’s really tacky and annoying and discredits a lot of the hard work that I’ve put in.”

This isn’t the first time the Grammy winner has gotten in trouble with her supporters, either. In July 2023, she scolded fans for calling themselves “Kittenz,” a nod to her moniker. According to Billboard , Doja lost nearly 300,000 followers due to the incident.

The artist will begin the U.K. and European leg of her “ The Scarlet Tour ” in June of this year. She’s expected to make stops in Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Lisbon, among other cities.
