Free comprehensive travel insurance now available on the Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard®

Latitude Financial today launched free comprehensive travel insurance for Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard ® customers and their eligible family members, providing benefits if they contract COVID-19 while travelling.

For a limited time until 31 March 2022, customers booking travel will automatically unlock free domestic and comprehensive international no-excess travel insurance when they spend $1,000 or more on flights using their Latitude 28° Global.

The free comprehensive international protection includes Travel Accident, Travel Medical Benefits, Trip Inconvenience Protection, Baggage Protection and Assistance Department Services.

The coverage related to contracting COVID-19 includes:

  • covered medical expenses of up to $700,000 per person if you contract COVID-19 during an overseas covered trip and require treatment;
  • non-refundable travel and accommodation deposits if you contract COVID-19 and a doctor certifies you unfit to commence or continue a covered trip;
  • administrative costs of postponing a covered trip if just before departure COVID-19 forces you into compulsory quarantine.
  • travel disruption due to border closures, such as the cost of additional accommodation or missed flights;
  • additional costs due to quarantine.

“Travel is particularly important to our Latitude 28° Global customers and after almost two years of closed borders we are excited to support their adventures by providing comprehensive travel insurance for a limited period, on top of no annual fee and no international transaction or currency conversion fees.”

The coverage is activated for 12 months from the initial purchase of $1,000 or more on flights booked directly with an airline or travel agent in a single transaction. Other trips within this period can be covered if the entire cost of all flights is paid on Latitude 28° Global. These trips are covered if they’re up to 180 days long and completed within the original 12-month period.

For more details on the coverage in this comprehensive travel insurance, full policy details (including the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions) are available at www.28degreescard.com.au/insurance

The launch of free comprehensive travel on Latitude 28° Global, which has no annual fees, comes ahead of an expected travel boom this summer and across 2022.

Google statistics show searches for the term “travel insurance” in Australia reached a 12-month high in November as Australians seek to protect their plans.

A Latitude survey has found Australians want to travel in greater numbers than ever as borders reopen, with as many as 80 per cent planning a trip this summer.

Catching up with family and friends is the principal driver of people’s holiday plans, with the survey of 1000 Australians showing 91 per cent of respondents are looking forward to connecting with loved ones.

Holiday makers are also wanting adventure after two years of COVID-19 disruption spent in the sanctuary of their home. Seventy-six per cent of travellers are seeking active holidays, particularly where they can experience the great outdoors.

While most Australians are planning domestic travel (79 per cent), half of 18-44 year olds surveyed want to travel overseas as soon as they can, especially as more international destinations open up to fully vaccinated travellers.

7 Best Cheap Travel Insurance Companies in July 2024

Profile photo of Sean Cudahy

Many, or all, of the products featured on this page are from our advertising partners who compensate us when you take certain actions on our website or click to take an action on their website. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Finding the cheapest travel insurance is often a priority for travelers hoping to protect themselves and their finances while away from home.

But is it better to err on the side of affordable travel insurance or opt for a more comprehensive plan? That depends on your needs .

On average, a comprehensive plan that covers some combination of trip cancellation and interruption costs, medical coverage and baggage protection (and perhaps a number of other things) will cost you 5%-10% of what you paid for the trip, according to NerdWallet partner Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace.

That means a comprehensive policy for a trip that costs you $3,000 could run you anywhere between $150 and $300. Factors like the cost and length of your trip, the age of the travelers and how much protection you want can significantly influence what you pay for your plan.

Ultimately, Squaremouth recommends “the least expensive policy that offers the coverage [travelers] need.”

Factors we considered when picking cheap travel insurance plans

We considered a few factors as we looked for the most affordable travel insurance plans.

Price: If your goal is to find cheaper travel insurance, you want the price to be affordable.

Breadth of coverage: The best budget travel insurance is typically going to be a plan that offers a wide range of protections at an affordable cost, ensuring you’re protected with at least some coverage for a wide range of scenarios.

Uniqueness or customizability : While many travel insurance plans have similar protections, some stand out for particular coverage that can be helpful to certain travelers, like those needing to Cancel For Any Reason , those going on a cruise, or travelers with preexisting health conditions. We didn’t spring for the priciest plans with broad, deep coverage; instead, we picked those that meet a sort of budget "sweet spot" when it comes to cost efficiency.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth getting?

An overview of the best cheap travel insurance plans

We looked at travel insurance quotes for a hypothetical 10-day trip to Italy in October 2023. The traveler is a 40-year-old man living in North Carolina who spent $2,000 on the trip, including airfare.

Reliable but cheap travel insurance providers

1. axa assistance usa (silver plan: $70).

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Why we picked it:

The $500 missed connection benefit is great for cruise and tour participants. It covers additional transportation, accommodations and meal costs when you miss a cruise or tour departure.

Full trip cancellation and interruption coverage, along with up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket medical costs and baggage coverage.

Among the lowest prices we found.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than AXA's $70 Silver plan, a Gold plan only costs $19 more and gets you deeper coverage amounts and up to $35,000 in collision rental car insurance.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (ExactCare Value plan: $56)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Cheapest plan we found while still offering a wide array of protections.

Includes a preexisting medical condition waiver.

Add-on rental car collision coverage optional for $10 per day. You can pick how many days you want the additional coverage — it’s not all or nothing.

At $56, this plan comes in at less than 3% of the $2,000 trip cost.

3. IMG (iTravelInsured Lite plan: $77)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Treats COVID-19 like any other illness, which is to say, if your claim accepts flu, strep throat or appendicitis as an acceptable, covered condition, the coronavirus is, too.

Covers costs related to trip interruption up to 125%

Higher than normal limits on dental expenses, at $1,000. If your teeth are your Achilles heel (or your biggest fear), this plan might be for you.

The iTravelInsured Lite plan doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles that other plans do, like rental car coverage , Cancel For Any Reason coverage or waivers for pre-existing conditions. But you’ll have relatively solid across-the-board trip protections.

4. John Hancock (Silver plan: $93 for a mid-tier plan)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Mid-level plan (as opposed to a basic plan) at an affordable price for travelers who want more coverage without paying too much.

Includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on for travelers wanting flexibility. It is a bit pricey, at half the cost of the insurance ($46.50 extra for a $93 plan).

Reimburses up to $1,000 for lost baggage , far more than many basic plans.

Add-on rental car coverage for $9 per day.

At $88, John Hancock’s basic (Bronze) plan isn’t particularly affordable. But for just $4 extra, you can tap into the benefits of a mid-tier plan at still less than 5% of the total trip cost.

5. Nationwide (Essential plan: $76)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Includes a preexisting conditions waiver.

Add-on rental car coverage for $90.

Covers trip interruption at 125% of the trip cost while providing comprehensive emergency medical and baggage coverage.

6. Seven Corners (Basic plan: $75)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

On top of standard trip protections, it includes a relatively affordable Cancel For Any Reason option for $31.50 extra.

If you plan to rent expensive sporting equipment, you might consider paying $10 extra to cover lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed gear.

COVID-19 coverage reimburses you for costs incurred if you have to quarantine .

Rental car coverage comes in at an affordable $7 per day.

Seven Corners’ Basic plan stands out because it offers a little bit of everything, appealing to athletic travelers, those who need affordable trip protections, those who want the flexibility to cancel for any reason and those still concerned about getting quarantined due to COVID-19.

7. Travelex Insurance Services (Basic plan: $71)

holiday extras latitude travel insurance

Straightforward: What you see is what you get. This plan’s coverage has fewer rules and caveats than many.

While not sporting the highest coverage amounts, it offers a solid range of protections to ensure you get at least something back when your travel is disrupted or you have a medical emergency.

Offers add-on rental car coverage for $10 per day.

At $71, the Travelex Basic plan’s cost is just over 3% of the $2,000 trip’s cost.

If you want to get travel insurance at the cheapest possible rate, here’s a trick. Put $0 as your trip cost, Stan Stanberg, co-founder of comparison site Travelinsurance.com said in an email.

“When excluding trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage the cost of a travel insurance plan goes down significantly,” Stanberg said.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical, trip delay , missed connection, baggage and other protections.

You’ll often find comprehensive travel insurance plans cost 5%-10% of your total trip cost, according to Squaremouth. This will often get you full trip cancellation and trip protection, baggage protection, emergency medical coverage and often other benefits.

Typically, the more you pay, the broader and deeper the coverage.

For many plans, you can purchase travel insurance up until you depart. However, to get access to the most protections possible, booking two days to two weeks after making your initial deposit is the best rule of thumb.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical,

, missed connection, baggage and other protections.

Customer Reviews

Purple Parking Gatwick I would like to personally thanks the lady bus driver that drove us to the terminal at nearly 3am on Friday 3rd and she was also our return driver on Friday 10th almost 3pm. I was there with my mother who has restricted mobility at the moment. The driver was most helpful with assisting me and my mum on and off the bus on both occasions. The car was bought to the reception for us and she even helped get luggage to the car. I really wish I got her name but hope you are able to work out who the driver was by the times we travelled and thank her. A lovely lady. Would definitely use air park’s purple parking again. Great Support and Understanding from Online Chat Representatives

First and foremost, I want to make sure that the online chat representative understands my questions and explains things clearly. Nowadays, it's hard to know who you're talking to, so it would be ideal if it felt like having a face-to-face conversation. Of course, we hope that all travels go smoothly and no claims are needed, but if a claim does arise, I expect that the customer service will assist promptly. It seems they have a good understanding of the concept of 'service.'

Great customer service!!

Kerry was very polite, friendly and helpful, and who, took the time to explain everything clearly to me before I made a decision relating to the policy. It was a pleasure speaking with her and I am very pleased with the cover I received for my forthcoming holiday. Thanks Kerry!!

Top class customer service

Unfortunately both my wife and myself have had an accident and we had to cancel our cruise and therefore the hotel and parking booked through Holiday Extras. Rocky, my contact was extremely helpful and kindly arranged for a refund to be made to my credit card. Not the first time I have booked with Holiday Extras and certainly won’t be the last. My friends and I always use them for parking or hotel and parking.

We were flying out from Luton airport…

We were flying out from Luton airport and booked our car in at Auction House Self Park. However for some unknown reason this self park closed down. We received an email confirming this and were upgraded free of charge to Vauxhall Way Self Park, which is not even 5 minutes from the airport. Parking here and getting driven to the airport was easy, stress free and hassle free, as was the pick up on return - 5 star service.

Date of experience : 04 July 2024

Had to cancel a Parking booking

I communicated with Azalea in the Customer Service Department. I had to cancel my parking at Gatwick Airport and she was extremely helpful. Holiday Extras retained £10 of the booking costs and will refund the rest to me. Couldn’t have asked for more 😁

Very good experience getting a quote

Karen was very pleasant to talk to. She took her time with me, was very helpful and answered all of my questions, checking where necessary. She explained everything very clearly. I felt like she cared, rather than just being interested in a sale.

Stayed at the Meon Valley on stay and cruise package.…

Stayed at the Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club before picking up our cruise in Southampton. The hotel is really nice, excellent room so much space. Evening food was limited as there was a wedding but the reception staff were really helpful and gave us details of local restaurants or takeaways. Breakfast was very good. Enough choice and well cooked. Everything was very well organised. Our taxi to take us to the port was on time and the same for our return pickup. Hardly waited and the driver was there. Would definitely stay at the hotel again.

The support I received was exceptional in every way. I was listened to and given clear information and clarification when asked for. No hard sell just fabulous customer service and appropriate to my needs. Two call handlers managed my case. A huge thank you to Holly and Ella.

The oustanding customer service we recieved from Neelam on reception, and Kelly in the runway Brasserie restaurant. Both made our stay very comfortable. Nothing was to much trouble. We would definetly return.

Be careful of T&Cs

Be careful of T&Cs. Even under the flextras option - they refund you, but keep £10 behind as a "voucher", so it's not a 100% refund of your money at all. I really dislike companies that make a profit from underhanded practices like this. It should be made very plain in the booking journey (not buried in T&CS) that you get the cash equivalent of 90% back. Many, many vouchers go unused broadly speaking, let alone this being quite niche, so it goes straight into their bottom line.

I did online chat regarding my booking as thought I had cancelled, it was all sorted and didn’t wait too long either, very happy

Double booking in Error, quickly resolved by Rocky

Id made a double booking of the parking, and had made a right mess...Rocky via the chat service sorted it out very quickly and accurately, exceptional service, very helpful indeed

Was able to change the dates of policy easily

Unfortunately our flight was cancelled due to the recent Microsoft debacle. Whilst we were able to change the flights at no extra cost with the airline, we had to change the dates of our insurance policy - hence my need to contact Holiday Extras. Kelly was very helpful at changing the dates and providing advice on other things that we could do. I would have given a 5 star rating but we had to pay a premium to make a change which seemed unfair as this was not our doing.

Terrible, I booked parking at Manchester Airport via a email that I received saying to book via this email for a discount. Therefore I booked it but unfortunately TUI cancelled the full holiday the day before we were due to fly. I then tried to cancel my car parking but they said I had booked a so called Super Saver that couldn't be amended or cancelled. It never said or was highlighted while i was booking this parking that you could not amend or cancel. They should make this clear from the outset. I even booked extra cover incase we were delayed on our return. Shameful underhanded way to get you to book thinking you are getting a deal when in fact your getting far less for a small discount.

I have used holiday extras at least 3…

I have used holiday extras at least 3 times a year for many years, I have had no problems until now, I left my F Pace Jaguar with them for 10 days, I came back to collect it at 02.45 in the morning in pitch black conditions, next morning I noticed bad scratching on the bonnet, this was from concrete or sand that had found its way on to the bonnet and they tried to rub it off (which caused the scratching). The photos they take before and after are not available!!!! AVOID Holiday Extras.. .

Multi storey meet and greet were amazing from start to finish. We arrived in pouring rain and they arranged for us to unload under shelter. We had our flight home cancelled and were over 27 hours delayed. The gentleman who greeted us came straight out to assist and get our keys to get us on our way home. Could not fault this service. And look forward to using again in September.

Outstanding customer service, second to none

I’m never sure how helpful or constructive it is to say everything was brilliant but it was. So easy to deal with, knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. Perfect customer service. I’m always very grateful as it’s a dying art. But it’s what keeps me coming back. Thank you for the effort you put into making it a pleasant experience.
