Dooars as a tourism destination.

The Dooars is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya mountain range. It is a magnificent region full of green hills and valley, jungle, rivers and tea plantations. The origin of the name comes from the Bengali word “Duar” which means door or gateway.

This vast region acts as a doorway to major Himalayan Wildlife habitats. It also functions as the gateway to the hills in India and Bhutan. It is the home of many exotic species and rich in the exquisite natural beauty. Major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa etc. flow through this nitrate-rich valley.

The three “T”- Tourism, Tea and Timber plays the role of most important economic factors in this area. The winter is chilly and the summer weather is pleasing. When the weather is clear, blue sky and green jungle welcome you to this piece of paradise in North Bengal.

Different Parts and Places of Dooars:

Dooars is a region full of diversity. With its huge area, the landscape, weather and beauty changes frequently from one place to the other. Tourists flock to this region to enjoy the beauty of the hills, rivers and forests. Winter temperature falls rapidly here, and the summer is soothing.

The rain is abundant; the trees grow to their full potential and length, forming a canopy. The good condition of the roads makes it one of the best monsoon destination in the state too. The ecstatic beauty of the eye-soothing verdure forest and the sweet song of the birds will provide you with the inner peace and calmness you seek after a tiring urban life.

Dooars tourism highlights and takes pride in the majestic mountains, various flora and fauna, tea gardens, perennial and lively springs, sandy river shores and the wide patches of grassland. There are several colonial-era heritage buildings in this area, especially near the tea-gardens.

Located in the prime spots, they provide an enchanting view over the surrounding area of gardens, hills and river bed. If you are driven by wanderlust, Dooars is a must-visit place for you.

After a day of visiting the major sightseeing points, relax under the starry sky in front of a bonfire, or watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room with a cup of tea in your hand- Dooars offers you numerous choices.

You can go to the tourist-favourite places, or explore the less-crowded options, which are unspoilt and nature is in their full glory.

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in dooars:.

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

Monsoon (July to September) Monsoon sets in, in the month of June and continues till September. In June the rainfall remains moderate but as months go by, particularly during the months of August and September, the showers become torrential. Due to heavy rainfall the sanctuaries too remain closed hence it’s not much fun visiting Dooars during these months except for the lush greenery that surrounds the whole area. Nature lovers may find it the best time to explore the fascinating region.

Winter (October to February) As the temperatures start dipping, Dooars becomes the most favored destination for tourists. As monsoon recedes, it leaves behind an absolutely gorgeously green surrounding that is intoxicating. There are no rains, skies remain crystal clear and weather is perfect for visiting the sanctuaries and enjoying the beauty of nature. A tourism festival called ‘Teesta Tea and Tourism fest’ is celebrated with much fervor in winter. Activities like paragliding, jungle safari and river rafting are also very popular among the adventurous tourists. What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

Dear Sheri Enk,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I am honored to assist you with your inquiry and will do my best to help.

According to your description, the problem you are experiencing is opening OneDrive search

We fully understand the inconvenience that this issue is causing you and in regards to your question, I'm guessing that you're actually looking for a way to add OneDrive to the Finder window sidebar. If that's the case, you can't actually do that because OneDrive is a program, not a device or location.

If you've already downloaded OneDrive, it should be in your Applications folder. Launch the program and create a local OneDrive folder in the location of your choice. Once you've created your OneDrive folder, you can drag it to the sidebar just like you would any other folder.

Have a nice life!

Best regards

NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden administration has finalized a new rule set to make millions of more salaried workers eligible for overtime pay in the U.S.

The move marks the largest expansion in federal overtime eligibility seen in decades. Starting July 1, employers will be required pay overtime to salaried workers who make less than $43,888 a year in certain executive, administrative and professional roles, the Labor Department said Tuesday. That cap will then rise to $58,656 by the start of 2025.

“Too often, lower-paid salaried workers are doing the same job as their hourly counterparts but are spending more time away from their families for no additional pay. That is unacceptable,” acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su said in a prepared statement.

She added that the administration was “following through on our promise to raise the bar.”

Tuesday’s news marks a significant jump from the current overtime eligibility threshold of $35,568, which was set under the Trump administration in 2019 — just three years after a more generous Obama-era effort was ultimately scuttled in court after facing pushback from some business leaders and Republican politicians.

Acting United States Secretary of Labor Julie Su, left, speaks next to Teresa Romero, president of United Farm Workers, after a news conference at Balletto Vineyards in Santa Rosa, Calif., Friday, April 26, 2024. Temporary farmworkers workers are getting more legal protections against employer retaliation, unsafe working conditions, illegal recruitment and other abuses. The rule announced Friday by the Biden administration aims to bolster support workers on H-2A visas. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

Under the federal law, nearly all hourly workers in the U.S. are entitled to overtime pay after 40 hours a week. But many salaried workers are exempt from that requirement — unless they earn below a certain level.

The new rule also expands overtime eligibility for some highly-compensated workers. According to a Labor Department FAQ , the current $107,432 annual threshold for highly-compensated workers is set to increase to $132,964 on July 1 and $151,164 by the start of 2025.

The Labor Department estimates that 4 million lower-paid salary workers who are exempt under current regulations will become eligible for overtime protections in the first year under the new rule. An additional 292,900 higher-compensated workers are also expected to get overtime entitlements.

The July 1 increases update the current salary thresholds using methodology put in place under the Trump administration’s 2019 regulation. The new rule’s methodology takes effect Jan. 1, the Labor Department said, with salary thresholds set to update every three years based on the latest wage data.

The Biden administration first announced plans for its new rule in late August , and submitted a proposal in September. The Labor Department said it “conducted extensive engagement with employers, workers, unions and other stakeholders” and considered more than 33,000 comments as it developed the final rule.

Critics have argued that the new regulation could saddle companies with new costs and add to persistent labor challenges. In a statement, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, a North Carolina Republican and chair of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, said that employers “are staring down the barrel of billions in annual costs to comply with the rule” while calling the regulation “excessive and heavy-handed.”

Meanwhile, advocates applauded the administration’s rule — with some noting that such a move is overdue. The left-leaning Economic Policy Institute says that the overtime threshold has not been updated properly for almost 50 years — leaving millions without such federal protections.

“The rule is an important step toward correctly valuing one of the most precious resources workers have — their time,” EPI president Heidi Shierholz said Tuesday. “This rule is an essential milestone in creating a stronger, fairer economy.”

A Timeline of Nemat Shafik’s Tenure as President of Columbia University

Dr. Shafik, who began her role in July, has faced increasing pressure over her congressional testimony and her handling of pro-Palestinian protests on campus.

  • Share full article

Nemat Shafik leans back in a chair at a congressional hearing.

By Adeel Hassan

Nemat Shafik was not even halfway through her first semester as president of Columbia University when protests related to the Israel-Hamas war began reverberating through college campuses across the United States.

Dr. Shafik, who is a native of Alexandria, Egypt, and goes by Minouche, is an economist who began her career at the World Bank. Her résumé includes time as the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund and as the deputy governor of the Bank of England, and she has also served in the British House of Lords, the upper chamber of Parliament.

Like leaders at other American universities, she has had to contend in recent months with dueling protests, reports of antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus and questions of whether pro-Palestinian supporters have been unfairly silenced.

On Friday, the faculty senate voted to approve a resolution that called for an investigation into the school’s leadership.

Here is a timeline of Dr. Shafik’s tenure at the university:

Jan. 18, 2023

The university’s board of trustees announces that Dr. Shafik, then the president of the London School of Economics and Political Science, will be the 20th president of Columbia.

July 1, 2023

Soon after Dr. Shafik’s first day as president, July 1, she tells Columbia Magazine that her leadership philosophy centers on leading from behind when possible. “Occasionally, you need to step out in front and point an institution in a different direction,” she says.

She continues: “But most of the time, if you’re working with great people, you can allow your colleagues to flourish and take things where they need to go. I find that this works well at universities, where you’ve got immensely talented individuals all around you.”

Oct. 4, 2023

Dr. Shafik is inaugurated as president, though it is not entirely a celebratory affair, the student newspaper, The Columbia Spectator, reports . In attendance are hundreds of protesters, including postdoctoral workers seeking a new contract and a group objecting to the university’s mismanagement of decades of patient sexual abuse by a former Columbia University Medical Center gynecologist, Robert A. Hadden .

Oct. 9, 2023

Two days after the Hamas-led assault on Israel, Dr. Shafik issues a statement saying that she is “devastated by the horrific attack on Israel,” and that “we must reject forces that seek to pull us apart.”

Oct. 12, 2023

Columbia takes the extraordinary step of closing its campus to the public as hundreds of protesters gather at the university for competing pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Oct. 23, 2023

Amid dueling pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations, Columbia calls off its Giving Day , an annual event in which alumni and donors are asked to send money to the university. In 2022, the event raised almost $30 million in 24 hours.

Nov. 1, 2023

After issuing statements on Oct. 18 and 27 to try to calm the campus and denounce instances of bias, Dr. Shafik announces the creation of a task force to combat antisemitism in an attempt to address the “root causes” of campus hate. She also takes some steps to restrict where and when student demonstrations can be held.

She also creates the Doxing Resource Group to help student protesters who face harassment after their identities are revealed online, a tactic that has particularly been targeted at pro-Palestinian students .

Nov. 10, 2023

The school suspends two pro-Palestinian student groups — Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace — which the school accuses of repeatedly violating policies requiring them to get permission and give 10 business days’ notice before holding an event.

Nov. 14, 2023

About 400 students rally on campus for the two suspended groups, and 200 faculty members walk out the next day in protest.

Dec. 5, 2023

The presidents of three top schools — Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania — testify at a congressional hearing that House Republicans convened to address issues of bias against Jewish students. Their lawyerly answers draw strong criticism.

Dr. Shafik does not attend the hearing because of a previous commitment at United Nations climate talks in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

Since the December congressional hearing, two of the campus leaders who testified, Claudine Gay of Harvard and Elizabeth Magill of Penn , have resigned under pressure.

When Dr. Shafik testifies before the same Republican-led House committee, she tells lawmakers that she is taking serious action to what she and university officials call a wave of antisemitism on campus.

She frequently defends Columbia’s commitment to free speech while saying that administrators “cannot and should not tolerate abuse of this privilege” when it puts others at risk. She also appears much more willing than the leaders of Harvard and Penn were to condemn and potentially discipline students and faculty.

On the same day, dozens of students pitch tents on a lawn in the center of Columbia’s Manhattan campus.

In short order, Dr. Shafik sends a letter to the N.Y.P.D., saying that the pop-up tent village “and related disruptions pose a clear and present danger” to the university.

“With great regret, we request the NYPD’s help to remove these individuals,” Dr. Shafik writes . More than 100 students at Columbia University and its sister school, Barnard College, are arrested. They were seeking that the university and its nearly $14 billion endowment divest from Israel.

There are no reports of violence or injury.

Tents are again set up on an adjacent campus lawn by demonstrators. All of the students involved in the first encampment are informed that they are suspended and some are evicted from campus housing.

Dr. Shafik announces that all classes will be held virtually, and that faculty and staff should work remotely if possible. “We need a reset,” Dr. Shafik writes in a letter to the Columbia community.

Hundreds of faculty members join a walkout and sign open letters criticizing Dr. Shafik for her handling of demonstrations. April 24

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, Republican of Louisiana, visits the campus. He says that Dr. Shafik should resign if she cannot immediately get the situation under control. At the same time, she fights for her job during an hourlong meeting with the university senate.

Columbia’s board of trustees says in a statement that it “strongly supports President Shafik as she steers the university through this extraordinarily challenging time.”

Columbia’s senate adopts a resolution, by a vote of 62-14 with three abstentions, that calls for an investigation of the university’s leadership. It also accuses the administration of violating established protocols, undermining academic freedom, jeopardizing free inquiry and breaching the due process rights of both students and professors.

Amazon Prime Day 2024 is happening this July, offering Prime members the chance to shop exclusive deals.

Amazon Prime Day is back for its 10th annual mega sale this July, allowing Prime members to shop exclusive deals on tech , travel accessories , kitchen gadgets , home products , pet supplies and more. The retailer has yet to confirm the exact dates of Prime Day and hasn’t shared many details about the event. Below, learn everything we know about Prime Day 2024 so far — we’ll continue updating you as we get more information.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

Amazon is hosting Prime Day 2024 in July. The retailer has not confirmed the exact dates of the event yet, but it’s typically a 48-hour sale. Prime Day usually takes place in mid-July — for example, Prime Day 2023 took place on July 11 and 12 and Prime Day 2022 took place on July 12 and 13.

According to Amazon, Prime Day 2024 is happening in over 20 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the U.S., and the UK.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest sale of the year and it’s exclusive to Prime members. It’s typically a 48-hour sale during which brands discount products to some of their lowest prices of the year. Amazon has hosted Prime Day in the summer for the past two years and a second Prime Day-level mega sale in October.

Big retailers like Walmart , Target and Best Buy tend to host their sales around Prime Day. Other retailers have not announced details about their summer sales yet, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Who can shop on Prime Day?

Only Prime members get access to Amazon Prime Day deals.

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is the retailer’s loyalty program. A standard membership costs $139 a year or $15 a month, and new members get a 30-day free trial. Amazon also offers discounted student memberships and memberships for those who qualify for certain government assistance programs .

Benefits of a Prime membership include access to shop Prime Day deals and free, fast shipping, like free two-day, one-day and same-day delivery. Prime members also get a handful of streaming and entertainment perks, plus they can order groceries online through Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh .

Can you shop early Prime Day deals?

Yes, Prime members can shop for early deals as we get closer to the event. The best way to stay updated about early Prime Day deals is by downloading the Amazon app, which can notify you about sales in real-time.

What are the best deals to shop on Amazon Prime Day?

Products across all shopping categories are on sale during Prime Day, and shoppers won’t know exactly what’s available until the event starts. But looking at Prime Day bestsellers from previous years can give you a sense of the traditionally discounted items. For example, the most ordered items during Prime Day in July 2023 include the Amazon Fire TV Stick , Laneige Lip Glowy Balm , Apple AirPods , Bissell Little Green Portable Deep Cleaner and Alexa-enabled devices. Some of the best Prime Day discounts are Amazon’s Lightning Deals, flash sales that give shoppers a short window to purchase limited quantities of specific products.
