Dooars: All Info, Suggested Tour Itineraries and Best Places to Stay

Dooars as a tourism destination.

The Dooars is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya mountain range. It is a magnificent region full of green hills and valley, jungle, rivers and tea plantations. The origin of the name comes from the Bengali word “Duar” which means door or gateway.

This vast region acts as a doorway to major Himalayan Wildlife habitats. It also functions as the gateway to the hills in India and Bhutan. It is the home of many exotic species and rich in the exquisite natural beauty. Major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa etc. flow through this nitrate-rich valley.

The three “T”- Tourism, Tea and Timber plays the role of most important economic factors in this area. The winter is chilly and the summer weather is pleasing. When the weather is clear, blue sky and green jungle welcome you to this piece of paradise in North Bengal.

Different Parts and Places of Dooars:

Dooars is a region full of diversity. With its huge area, the landscape, weather and beauty changes frequently from one place to the other. Tourists flock to this region to enjoy the beauty of the hills, rivers and forests. Winter temperature falls rapidly here, and the summer is soothing.

The rain is abundant; the trees grow to their full potential and length, forming a canopy. The good condition of the roads makes it one of the best monsoon destination in the state too. The ecstatic beauty of the eye-soothing verdure forest and the sweet song of the birds will provide you with the inner peace and calmness you seek after a tiring urban life.

Dooars tourism highlights and takes pride in the majestic mountains, various flora and fauna, tea gardens, perennial and lively springs, sandy river shores and the wide patches of grassland. There are several colonial-era heritage buildings in this area, especially near the tea-gardens.

Located in the prime spots, they provide an enchanting view over the surrounding area of gardens, hills and river bed. If you are driven by wanderlust, Dooars is a must-visit place for you.

After a day of visiting the major sightseeing points, relax under the starry sky in front of a bonfire, or watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room with a cup of tea in your hand- Dooars offers you numerous choices.

You can go to the tourist-favourite places, or explore the less-crowded options, which are unspoilt and nature is in their full glory.

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in dooars:.

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

Monsoon (July to September) Monsoon sets in, in the month of June and continues till September. In June the rainfall remains moderate but as months go by, particularly during the months of August and September, the showers become torrential. A tourism festival called ‘Teesta Tea and Tourism fest’ is celebrated with much fervor in winter. Meanwhile in Florida, road travel will set a record for the second year in a row with more than 3.9 million Floridians expected to take a road trip. AAA shared that's 183,000 more than last year.

“Road travelers should prepare for congestion in the afternoon and evening hours, particularly near larger metro areas, theme parks and popular attractions,” Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA, said. “With so many people on the road it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving, and move over for people on the roadside.

What will gas prices look like around July 4th for Florida drivers?

AAA reported gas prices recently sank to multi-month lows, but rebounded in the past couple of days.

On Wednesday, June 19, Florida drivers paid an average price of $3.32 per gallon on gasoline. That's more than what holiday travelers paid last Independence Day, when the state average was $3.26 per gallon.

These Are the Best (and Worst) Times to Hit the Road for July 4, According to AAA

And the best time is sooner than you'd think.

A record-setting nearly 71 million Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July holiday, cementing this as the summer of travel.

In total, 70.9 million travelers are forecast to head 50 miles or more from home from Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 7, according to AAA . Of those, 60.6 million people are expected to hit the road.

This year’s forecast, which for the first time includes the entire Fourth of July week plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after, represents a 5 percent increase compared to last year and an 8 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic in 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement, adding, “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

For travelers looking to drive over July 4, mornings tend to be the best to avoid traffic. The worst times to travel by car ahead of the holiday are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m, according to AAA. Travelers heading back on Monday, July 8, should also avoid rush hour traffic during both the morning and afternoon.

Overall, the best day for traffic will be Monday, July 1.

While traffic is likely inevitable, the good news is gas prices are expected to continue dropping leading up to July 4. Currently, gas is averaging $3.47 per gallon nationwide, according to AAA , which is lower than last year’s national average of $3.53 per gallon during the same time period.

Beyond the roads , a total of 5.74 million people are expected to fly over the July 4 holiday, a nearly 7 percent increase compared to last year. The prediction comes as unprecedented numbers of travelers have swarmed airports across the country , setting new records for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

More people may be flying, but AAA said domestic airfare is actually 2 percent cheaper over the Fourth of July holiday than last year. The average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is currently $800.

In addition, more than 4.6 million travelers are forecast to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains.

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

Image

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.

Looking for a show in the sky to celebrate America’s birthday ? Here are some of the best D.C.-area spots to see fireworks in the next week.

The West Lawn of the Capitol opens at 3 p.m. for the audience of the free A Capitol Fourth concert, hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, which begins at 8. Performers include Smokey Robinson, Fantasia, Darren Criss, Fitz and Noelle of Fitz and the Tantrums, Sheila E., the National Symphony Orchestra and various military bands. The fireworks display begins at 9:09 p.m., and the concert is timed so the NSO performs Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture while the fireworks are booming over the Washington Monument. Visitors will be required to go through security screenings to enter the Capitol grounds or public viewing areas on the Mall west of 14th Street. (There’s a map of closures, first aid stations, restrooms and other important landmarks on the National Mall website, nps.gov/nama .) If the crowds or the lines are too much, there’s usually more room to spread your picnic blanket closer to the Smithsonian Castle.

Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon’s An American Celebration gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with a reading of the Declaration of Independence and features an 18th-century magic show, Revolutionary War music and Army encampments, talks with reenactors, and, to the delight of all ages, daytime fireworks that create billowing puffs of colorful smoke over the Potomac River at 1 p.m. Admission is $26 for adults, $13 for kids, and free for children age 5 and younger.

Fireworks beyond the Fourth

Love shimmering pyrotechnic displays but can’t swing it on July Fourth? Fear not: The fun isn’t limited to Thursday night. Here are more events taking place throughout the week leading up to the holiday.

Saturday: Fireworks, Food and Family Fun at Lake Fairfax

Tuesday: Vienna’s Independence Day Celebration

The town of Vienna’s annual party fills George C. Yeonas Park with a mix of live music — Latin American from Cantaré, pop and funk from Thunderball — as well as family activities, food trucks and picnicking on baseball fields. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m., with fireworks beginning around 9:30. Free parking is available off-site.

Wednesday: Baseball and fireworks

Fireworks illuminate baseball diamonds across the region on Independence Day Eve. The Nationals, who won’t have fireworks after their July 4 day game, will launch “ Freedom Fireworks ” after the last out of their 6:45 p.m. game against the Mets on July 3. The Bowie Baysox, who regularly host fireworks after weekend games at Prince George’s Stadium, promise their biggest show of the year after the Orioles’ AA affiliate’s 6:35 p.m. game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The single-A Fredericksburg Nationals, home of the regular “Fireworks Friday” promotions, host a “ patriotic edition ” of the popular event following a 6:05 p.m. game against the Delmarva Shorebirds.

Want to see a drone light show July 4th? These Phoenix-area celebrations will have them

dooars visit in july

Fireworks have been a standing American tradition for centuries, even appearing at the first celebration of the country’s independence.

But an alternative option is popping up at events across the country, including Fourth of July festivities.

In 2012, drone light shows were introduced to the public in Austria. Since then, the displays have become more popular, especially in places with restrictions on traditional fireworks. As of 2021, the new light shows were estimated to be a billion-dollar industry after growth in recent years.

Some proponents of drone shows point to fireworks’ negative impact on the environment and the stress it can put on pets and people with post-traumatic stress disorder .

What are drone light shows?

The choreographed performances feature dozens or even hundreds of unmanned drones in the sky. The drones are equipped with LED lights that create colorful formations and symbols. The newer type of performance has been displayed at an Olympic Opening Ceremony and Presidential victory speech .

Drone shows create much less pollution than traditional fireworks. Fourth of July fireworks add 42% more pollutants to the air, according to a study released last year by the journal Atmospheric Environment . Those pollutants can harm the body's respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Drones, as they are reusable, also do not create the waste that fireworks do.

4th of July revelers: shouldn't take risks with Arizona's 'overly punitive' DUI laws

Firework displays can create booms around 140 to 160 decibels, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That noise has been shown to disrupt neighboring wildlife and lead to a spike in lost pets.

But drone shows are not as affordable as fireworks with prices going upward of $500 to $1,000 per drone, according to provider Lumasky .

Where can I see a 4th of July drone light show in Arizona?

While drone shows are not as common as fireworks, there are some options to catch a display around the Phoenix area this Fourth of July weekend.

  • Gilbert Fourth of July Celebration , July 4 - Event will feature live music, fireworks and a drone light show. Patrons are asked to arrive close to when the parking lot opens at 4 p.m. and parking costs $15 per car.
  • Red, White & Biltmore , July 6 - The Arizona Biltmore will host Fourth of July festivities for those with a room reservation from July 4 to 7. Saturday night will feature a drone light show following a daytime pool party.
