Antony and the Johnsons is a collective fronted by Antony Hegarty, a singer/songwriter hailing from Chichester, Sussex, England who was born in 1971. The band has released four studio albums since their debut in 2000, and won the 2005 Mercury Award for their album “I Am A Bird Now”.

Antony Hegarty grew up in thrall to British synth-pop artists like Marc Almond and Boy George, but the music she makes in her collective Antony and the Johnsons is more in thrall to the underground idols that she discovered later on in her adolescence like Diamanda Galas and Klaus Nomi. It’s music that’s nakedly emotional, profound and at points, uncomfortable to listen to due to its sheer emotional transparency. It’s also a testament to its quality that with it, Hegarty has become one of the world’s biggest cult artists, with a devoted fan base and the kind of clout that has seen her perform with everyone from Lou Reed to the Britten Sinfonia.

Born in Chichester, Hegarty has spent most of her life living in the U.S. At first relocating to San Francisco with her family when she was a child, but later moving to New York City to attend university. After she had finished her degree she ensconced herself in NYC’s potent performing arts scene, and in 1996 was awarded a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts for a production of hers called "The Birth of Anne Frank/The Ascension of Marsha P. Johnson". With the money that she’d been granted she assembled a group of musicians and had a set of demos of songs she’d written earlier professionally recorded, first performing live with the newly christened Johnsons in 1997.

This demo fell into the hands of the British experimental musician David Tibet, who was so impressed with the songs that he offered to release the album through his label Durtro. Hegarty accepted and her debut album, 2000’s “Antony And The Johnsons”, was released to masses of underground acclaim. 2001 saw the release of a follow up E.P called “I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy” whose producer, Hal Willner, played to another client of his, Lou Reed. Reed immediately contacted Hegarty and had her sing a song on the album that he was working on “The Raven”. At this point Hegarty was starting to court some mainstream attention, and her debut album was re-released in 2004 by the respected indie label Secretly Canadian.

At this point, her next move would make or break her on the world stage, and in the form of 2005’s “I Am A Bird Now”, she made it in the most spectacular way she could. The record was critically adored and won the U.K’s Mercury Award in the same year, leading to a sales jump in her native country that saw the record certified Gold within a year. The collaborations with Boy George, Devendra Banhart and Rufus Wainwright on “I Am A Bird Now” made her an even higher profile name and ever since then, she’s been a cult hero of the highest order. With sold out shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and the Royal Opera House to her name as well as two top twenty albums on the U.K album charts.

Artists like her come along once a century, and for that, Antony and the Johnsons come highly recommended.

Antony & The Johnsons were my favourite melancholy band steering me through my anguished teenage years. Their music is heartbreaking, uplifting, intriguing and unique, with lyrics so personal and eye-opening that it's impossible not to become immersed in Antony's troubled world. Often performing as a chamber group with strings, acoustic guitar and Antony at the piano, their live performances are intimate and hushed, giving plenty of space for Antony's soaring vocals to take centre stage. I saw them at Shepherd's Bush Empire a few years ago. The audience was wonderful - really respectful and friendly towards each other. It was especially nice because there was a real sense of community within a large group of people who had all clearly been so touched by Antony's music. I haven't really found that experience with any other bands I've seen since. Antony is a wonderful performer - so expressive in his movements as well as voice - and possessing quite an unexpected cheeky sense of humour. Perhaps it's because he used to do lots of cabaret style performances as a youth in New York. I know that since I saw him, Antony has paid much more attention to the visuals that accompany his music, making much more of a immersive theatrical performance than purely a band of musicians. I can't wait to see him again and see how he has changed.

One of the most startling art rock performers of the past few years is without a doubt Antony & The Johnson. Fronted by Antony Hegarty, she confidently commands an array of collaborators and musicians who aid her in recreating her thoughtful, melancholic discography. You cannot fault this lady's talent and her ability to turn something that on the surface is rather depressing into something that you are able to tap your feet to.

Citing Kate Bush as one of her influencers, Antony appears to float around the stage tonight as if possessed during opener 'Rapture' yet her voice is absolutely note perfect. By a mid-set reinterpretation of Beyoncé's 'Crazy In Love' the crowd is well and truly onside as they cheer and holler at the breaks in the tracks as Hegarty coyly thanks them for the vocal support.

Playing a set reaching from all corners of her discography, she demonstrates some serious performer versatility and by the final encore of 'The Crying Light' the audience cheers and applauds one final rapturous time for this individual and talented performer.

For the first time in a decade, ANOHNI presents a series of concerts with The Johnsons. Responding to a time of upheaval, she issues a challenge: “It’s Time to Feel What’s Really Happening.”

Traversing animist and eco-feminist themes, ANOHNI’s musical journey spans many genres—from electronic experimental to avant-classical, dance, and soul. After achieving breakthrough success in 2005 with I Am a Bird Now (2005), she won the UK’s prestigious Mercury Prize. Releases since include The Crying Light (2009), Swanlights (2010), and live albums Cut The World (2012) and TURNING (2014). In 2016, ANOHNI released the sharply political electronic album HOPELESSNESS , produced by Hudson Mohawke and Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) and selected as one of the year’s top ten albums by The New York Times . That same year, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song for the environmentalist elegy, “Manta Ray,” featured in Louie Psihoyo’s 2015 film Racing Extinction . ANOHNI’s sixth studio album, My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross (2023), examines societal structures, spirituality, and our relationships with the biosphere. 

The artist reaches for courage, resilience, and ceremony in the face of an unprecedented  contemporary landscape and emphasizes that, "For [her], there’s no heavenly respite; Creation is a spectral and feminine continuum, and we remain an inalienable part of Nature."

Antony and the Johnsons Plot Tour, Reveal LP Artwork

Hey there, good lookin'. That up there is centenarian butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno , doing his thing on the cover of The Crying Light , the forthcoming third LP from Antony and the Johnsons . As Antony himself writes in a press release, "My new album The Crying Light is dedicated to the great dancer Kazuo Ohno. In performance I watched him cast a circle of light upon the stage, and step into that circle, and reveal the dreams and reveries of his heart. He seemed to dance in the eye of something mysterious and creative; with every gesture he embodied the child and the feminine divine. He's kind of like my art parent."

Ohno's image also appeared on the cover of Antony's Another World EP.

The ten-track Light is due in the States from Secretly Canadian on January 20, in Australia from Spunk Records January 17, the UK and Europe from Rough Trade January 19, and in Japan from P-Vine January 20. Starting in early February, Antony takes the Johnsons for an all-too-rare spin around North America. We're told there's also a sizeable European tour in the works, though those dates are still supposedly being firmed up.

Antony, along with quite a few more fascinating folks, also appears on Marianne Faithful's Easy Come, Easy Go , out now on European iTunes but due January 19 from UMTV .

Born in Sussex, England, Anohni also spent her childhood in Amsterdam and the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to NYC at the age of 19. In 1992, she founded the performance collective Blacklips at the Pyramid Club, and spent the next several years developing her voice and ideas on late night stages around NYC.

Anohni emerged with her musical ensemble Antony and the Johnsons in 1998. In 2005 Antony and the Johnsons won the UK’s Mercury Prize for the album I am a Bird Now. Upon the release of 2009’s The Crying Light, Ann Powers of the LA Times wrote “it’s the most personal environmentalist statement possible, making an unforeseen connection between queer culture’s identity politics and the green movement. As music, it’s simply exquisite.” In 2010, The Sun gave Swanlights 5 out of 5 stars and called Anohni “one of the greatest living vocalists.” The Daily News wrote, “in these intense and hushed pieces, she has created an exalted world entirely her own.”

In 2006 Anohni collaborated with film-maker Charles Atlas on TURNING, a concert and live video installation. The Guardian called TURNING, “fragile, life affirming, and truly wonderful (five stars).” Le Monde hailed TURNING at the Olympia in Paris as “Concert-manifeste transsexuel.”

Since 2008, Anohni has performed with symphonies throughout the world, including The London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, The Chamber Orchestra of Sydney at Sydney Opera House, The Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Lincoln Center, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic at BAM. Antony and The Johnsons’ presentation of The Crying Light at the Manchester Festival 2009 was included in Klaus Biesenbach’s 100 Years: A History of Performance Art, at MoMA PS1. Last summer, Anohni was the musical director and a performer in the critically lauded The Life and Death of Marina Abramovi , directed by Robert Wilson. This piece will tour Madrid, Amsterdam, Basel and Antwerp in Summer 2012.

In January 2012, the Museum of Modern Art presented Antony and the Johnsons’ Swanlights to a sold out crowd at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Anohni transformed the space into the interior of a white mountain, bursting with crystals and fragmenting light, in collaboration with light artist Chris Levine, light designer Paul Normandale and set designer Carl Robertshaw. The NY Times says Anohni’s performance is like “Cries from the heart, crashing like waves”.

Anohni has collaborated with a wide-ranging group of artists and musicians including Björk, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, CocoRosie, and Lou Reed. Reed has said, “When I first heard her, I knew I was in the presence of an angel.” Anderson adds, “Two words and she has broken your heart. When she sings, it is the most exquisite thing you will hear in your life.”

Anohni is also a visual artist and has exhibited her drawings at Palais Des Beaux Arts in Belgium, Isis Gallery in London, Accademia Albertina in Turin and the Triennale in Milan. In 2009 she curated a group show entitled Six Eyes at Agnès B. Galerie Du Jour in Paris, which included work by Peter Hujar, Kiki Smith, and William Basinski. In October of 2010, Anohni released a book of collages and drawings, also called Swanlights, published by Abrams Image. Anohni’s drawings were exhibited at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in Spring 2012, curated by James Elaine.
