Eric Walters, writer (born at Toronto, Ont 3 Mar 1957). Raised in Toronto, Eric Walters began his career as a social worker , receiving a BA in Psychology, a Bachelor of Social Work, and a Master of Social Work at York University . He completed both his BSW and his MSW via part-time studies while working full-time as a social worker in a variety of settings, including child welfare, private practice and a mental health centre. Walters had, however, always wanted to pursue a career in teaching , and later completed his Bachelor of Education while still working full-time as a social worker. During his teaching career, Walters began writing novels for his class as a way of engaging his students; now that he has published numerous novels for young adults, his accessible and engaging novels reach youth across Canada.

In 1993, while he was teaching a grade 5 class at Vista Heights Public School in Streetsville, Ont, Walters wrote his first novel, Stand Your Ground (1994), to encourage his students to become more involved in literature. The novel was set at Vista Heights, and included locations from the community and the names of several of his students. Following the success of this book Walters continued to write a novel for his class each year, often focusing on local issues and featuring students from his school. Some of his other novels bring historical characters to life, such as inventor Alexander Graham Bell in The Hydrofoil Mystery (1999) and explorer Robert Bartlett in Trapped in Ice (1997).

Whether his novels are set in modern or historical times, two main themes run through Walters' books: the importance of belonging, and a person's power to make changes in his or her own life. In an interview with The Canadian Review of Materials , Walters discusses this focus on creating strong characters who take ownership of their actions: "There's nothing more wonderful than overcoming adversity, to stare it in the eyes and to win. We don't have to be victims. One of the societal trends I see is looking for someone to blame for what's gone wrong for you. You've got to take responsibility for things. Rather than finding an excuse to fail, find a reason to succeed."

Walters has published more than 60 novels for young adults. These works have garnered more than 80 awards, including honours from 11 separate children's choice awards. Walters is the only 3-time winner of both the Ontario Library Association's Silver Birch and Red Maple Awards. In addition to being some of the best-selling children's literature in Canada, Walters' novels are available in countries across the world and have been translated into French, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Chinese, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and Slovenian. Walters is also well-known for giving presentations to students across Canada, blending drama, storytelling, and audience participation in an attempt to excite youth about reading and writing.

Living in Mississauga, Ont, Walters now focuses his time solely on writing and philanthropic work, having left both teaching and social work. In March 2008, Walters and his wife Anita founded a children's outreach program, the Creation of Hope, which provides direct support, education, advocacy, micro-grants and micro-loans for over 500 orphans living in Kikima, a small rural county in Kenya. The program completed the construction of its first children's home, the Rolling Hills Residence, in September 2009.

★”A profound, realistic story of a multiracial family…This brilliantly written tale is a lovely introduction to the important topics of wildfires and animal sanctuaries for young readers. Great for animal lovers and children curious about nature.”–School Library Journal, starred review On returning to their home after a massive wildfire, nine-year-old Jasmin and her seven-year-old brother, Hunter, thought the biggest surprise would be whether their fire-resistant house had survived. Jasmin and Hunter did not expect to find an orphaned bear cub stuck in the neighbors’ well. Rescuing the tiny cub from the well was the easy part; now they need to care for it until the people from the bear-rescue sanctuary can make it safely through the fires to pick it up. The cub turns out to be exactly what one would expect of a wild animal–a huge handful! The latest Orca Echoes early chapter book from award-winning author Eric Walters was inspired by Eric’s visit to a wildlife sanctuary in Northern British Columbia. Bear in the Family tells the fictionalized story of a bear cub found by a family after the forest surrounding their home was destroyed by a wildfire.

Among the things that remain timeless in people’s lives is literary pieces. Authors like Eric Walters engage people with their works that reflect different feelings in the society. Eric Walters is a renowned Canadian author with 92 titles to his name. Walters is a dynamic author who shines in both fiction and non-fiction writing. He is also an adventure writer who engages his readers with experiences of the places he visits by putting them in novels. His novels have bagged numerous awards like the National Outdoor Boo Award, the Silver Birch award, Children’s Choice Award, the Canadian Library Book of the Year Honor and the UNESCO Honor Selection Designation. Some of his novels including Walking Home and The Rule of Three were listed in the New York Times as best selling pieces. They have also been listed by the YA Teen Review Gallery, the CM Magazine, The Francisco Book Review and The Publishers Weekly as best sellers.

Eric Walters was born in Toronto on 3rd March 1957. He spent his early life in Toronto before joining York University to study psychology and social work. After his undergraduate degree, he embarked on a career as a social worker. Walters developed a passion for his work and he worked in different environments including child welfare settings, mental health institutions as well in private practice counseling. it was during this engaging career that he enrolled for a part-time masters degree in social work in York University.

Although Eric Walters was dedicated to social work and counseling, he had a soft spot for teaching and after acquiring his masters degree in social work from York University, he enrolled for a Bachelors degree in education and began teaching in elementary schools in Toronto. His teaching method inclined to engaging the learners, and he began writing short pieces for them. Some of the short novels tats he wrote for his students and other young learners were published and they became favorites for youths across the country.

In 1993, Eric Walters was attending to grade five learners at Vista Heights Public School located in Streetsville when he decided to write a novel, Stand Your Ground. The objective of the novel was to encourage the students to develop the right attitude towards literature and he, therefore, he gave it a touch of the local setting of which the learners had good acquaintance. Walters made it a habit of writing a novel for his class every year and he focused on the local issues.

Eric Walters is mostly known for his two novels, The Rule Of Three and Bifocal. The Rule Of Three was published in 2014 by Straus and Giroux and it is developed brick by brick to outline the responsibility of the common citizen when the government and social structures break down. The novel starts with power breakdown in a local school. The situation prompts the school to dismiss the students. Sixteen-year-old Adam drives home with his old car that is not computer operated. Adam and his neighbor Herb who has immense skills in analyzing people behavior and radio communication come up with an ultra-light plane that assists in analyzing the situation o the town. By using the light plane, they discover that there is a rebel group using sophisticated weapons to destabilize the town.

The residents of the town cannot access basic items like food and water, and they resort to looting. The police cannot contain the people and they enlist the help of some responsible citizens. Adam’s mother who is a local police captain places guards in various strategic positions to contain the looting. With the help of Herb, the selected citizens together with the fire captain, the police captain and a couple of other law enforcers devise a way of growing crops beneath the power lines as well as reinforcing walls around the town for their survival. The novel takes a calculated move that presents an almost real situation that calls for the collaboration of the authorities and citizens to work towards heir survival in desperate moments.

Bifocal, another of Eric Walters great novels and co-authored by Deborah Ellis won the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award and the White Raven’s Outstanding New Intentional Books for Children and Adults. in the novel, Haroon, who is a dedicated football player and an immigrant from Afghanistan faces racial profiling on suspicion of terrorism. The students become hostile to Haroon and Jay to the point of setting a smoke bomb near their lockers. The two are aware that the set up was to depict them like terrorists due to their race. The novel hits the nail on racial discrimination that students face in learning institutions.Walter and Ellis are objective in outlining the negative effects of unnecessary profiling and generalization that makes the lives of other students difficult.

Besides his writing and teaching career, Eric Walters is a committed family man. He lives in Mississauga together with his wife Anita and his three children Julia, Nick and Christina. On average, Walters authors four books every year, and this makes him one of the greatest and most celebrated writer in the Canadian Literature arena. To expand his audience, Walter visits famous niches around the world, and he writes about the experiences in the specific places. In doing so, he gives the readers of his works first-hand information on the places he visits. For example, after visiting the Sahara Desert in 2010, he authored Just Deserts. In the same year, he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro together with his son, and he found it noble to share his experience with others through a novel, and he came up with Heaven and Earth.

Novelists will continue enjoying timeless works by authors who have a touch of the prevailing conditions and passion. At 58 years, Eric Walter remains one of the most celebrated authors of his award-winning works. A note worth character of this writer is that he has a nostalgic hobby for writing. He presents an experience in a dynamic way that incorporates both fiction and real accounts for specific readers. At an average of four books every year, Eric Walter will probably make history as one of the greatest writers of teen and children books.
