The Garden Island

The island equivalent to the Garden of Eden, Huahine is an immense tropical jungle thriving with coconut plantations, vanilla orchids, banana groves, breadfruit trees and watermelon fields. Beyond its lush landscapes and bright blooms, Huahine is also a culturally preserved sanctuary with sacred temples hidden throughout dense vegetation. Undoubtedly, this island will leave you spellbound.

Part of the Leeward Group of Society Islands, Huahine is a 40-minute flight from Tahiti and rests in close proximity to Raiatea , Taha'a and Bora Bora . The island is divided into two parts: Huahine Nui (big) and Huahine Iti (small). The name Huahine, a variation of the Tahitian word vahine (woman), presumably refers to a mountain ridge resembling the outline of a pregnant woman—a symbol of the island's irrefutable fertility.

Huahine is exceptionally green—perhaps with envy, since fewer travelers frequent her sandy shores and lush hillsides than her favored counterparts, Moorea and Bora Bora. For this reason, though, Huahine has retained the alluring essence and authenticity of early Polynesia. The locals pride themselves on preserving what they genuinely believe is the most picturesque island in Tahiti; and our clients who visit often find that Huahine becomes their favorite island, returning again and again to find the same landscape still unchanged over time.

Archaeology enthusiast or not, book a 4x4 Tour and enjoy an educational and insightful discovery of Polynesia's past. Just outside Maeve Village you will find the largest stone temple with hundreds of excavated structures and many more still uncovered. In the nearby Lake Fauna Nui, visit the ancient stone fish traps considered so sacred that only descendants of the Tahitian royal family can remove them. Lastly, climb Matairea Hill and encounter remnants of countless religious and ceremonial monuments. You can also watch a feeding of the sacred blue-eyed eels in a freshwater lake near the town of Faie.

Final Impression

Mystical, captivating and alluring, Huahine is admittedly one of our favorite islands in French Polynesia. It's usually a popular choice among repeat visitors who have already seen Moorea or Bora Bora and now seek a new experience. Regardless, first timers will love the welcoming hospitality of the locals and the absolute serenity of the island's natural surroundings.

Generally speaking, the natives appreciate a quiet lifestyle; but Huahine is still a very active island. The main town of Fare springs to life on Sunday mornings when the outdoor market brings truckloads of fruit and produce to the waterfront. Every year in October, the Hawaiki Nui Va'a, the largest outrigger canoe race in the South Pacific, starts from the island of Huahine. On that special day, the air is filled with excitement and intense electricity.

Popular water activities in Huahine include Marc`s Motu Picnic , Jet Skiing , 4x4 Tours , sailing and sport fishing. The island also has some of the best surf in the South Pacific, particularly at Ava Mo'a Pass near the reef in Fare. Feeling creative? Journey through the expressive side of Huahine life and discover the fine artistry of Melanie Shook Dupre. Inspired by the surrounding lush Polynesian landscapes and lifestyles for over 39 years, Melanie gracefully captivates island life through her paintings and portraits. Huahine - Travel Guide - Polynesia Paradise

The Essentials of Huahine

1. enjoy the natural beauty.

Huahine has a stunningly lovely lagoon and its beaches are among the most beautiful in Polynesia, especially in the villages of Fare in the north and Parea in the south. The warm waters are both crystalline and tinted with infinite shades of blue. Beyond, the green mountains and the cliffs participate in a real explosion of colors. The landscape is magical and lends itself to relaxation but also to the most beautiful experiences.

A boat trip around the island allows you to see the incredible relief and the intensely colored landscape. From the beaches, excursions are also possible by jet ski or kayak to explore the surrounding sandy motus. On land, you will find that hiking in Huahine offers unforgettable views.

2. Meeting Traditional Polynesia

Huahine has an exceptional archaeological heritage. It has many marae, ancient Polynesian sacred places. On the shores of Lake Fauna Nui, the remarkable Maeva marae impresses by its size and takes the form of an open-air museum. The coral rock platforms and the vertically erected stones are voluminous. The mana, the spirit of Huahine, is palpable.

Local life is logically permeated by traditions, rites and customs. On the central lake, impressive stone aquatic enclosures, called fish pens, recall ancestral fishing techniques. Further on, in the village of Faie, one marvels at a stream teeming with huge blue-eyed eels, which, according to popular belief, are the reincarnation of the ancients. Everything is legend on authentic Huahine.

3. Discovering The Local Life

Staying on Huahine gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Polynesian culture and enjoy the best the island has to offer: a privileged contact with its population. You will not miss the chance to stroll through the small town of Fare, nor to participate in the traditional Tahitian Sunday oven. Having a rental car in Huahine is a great way to go around, which will allow you to meet the inhabitants and their craftsmanship while passing through picturesque villages.

In the south, on Huahine Iti, you can enjoy the secrets of a vanilla plantation and then have fun customizing your pareo, the traditional local garment. In the north, on Huahine Nui, you can visit a pearl farm and a shell museum before going to a distillery for a wine tasting. The local artisans are happy to show you around their facilities and share their passion.

Huahine in a Nutshell

Huahine is a raw gem whose charm will leave no one unmoved. Its wild nature and the beauty of its lagoon are its main assets. On the bangs of mass tourism, the island has a satisfactory and diversified offer of accommodation and activities. Much less popular than Maupiti or Bora Bora, Huahine remains economically more affordable and has many points of interest related to history and daily life.

With daily flights from Tahiti, Huahine is one of the most accessible destinations in French Polynesia. Three to four nights on site are necessary to discover and enjoy the island. You wish to obtain personalized advice and benefit from the expertise of tourism professionals? Our team is here to help you. Contact us today to start planning your vacation in Huahine and French Polynesia !

Good to Know

Etymology: The island owes its name to the fantastic silhouette of a pregnant woman lying on her back, drawn by the peaks of Mount Tavaiura. One can see her forehead, her face and the curves of her belly. Huahine literally means ” sex of a woman “.

Culture: Next to the Maeva marae, a traditional building on stilts now houses a documentation center dedicated to navigation and Polynesian customs.

Celebrations:  In September, Huahine is the annual starting point of a great dugout canoe race: the Hawaiki Nui. In addition to the competition, the inhabitants organize beautiful traditional events, mixing sports, dance and culture.

Custom:  The inhabitants are deeply attached to the land of their ancestors. In a concern of transmission and memory, they bury their dead on their own properties.

Green Day Forced to Pause Detroit Concert Due to Unauthorized Drone

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Green Day temporarily halted their concert at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Wednesday night due to a “potential safety issue.” During their rendition of “Longview,” the rock band ran off the stage without warning.

Billboard confirmed that an “unauthorized drone” had been spotted hovering within sight of the stage by security, who pulled the band offstage. No explanation was given to the crowd, who continued singing in the band’s absence, although a message soon appeared on the stage’s video screens that read: “Show Pause. Please standby for details.”

The band — Billie Joe Armstrong , Mike Dirnt , and Tre Cool — returned 10 minutes later to resume the song. Armstrong didn’t address why the band left, instead saying, “How you doing? We’re gonna pick up where we left off.”

Following the show, Green Day took to social media to explain the situation, writing, “Detroit! Sorry for the delay in the show tonight, stadium security had us clear the stage while they dealt with a potential safety issue. DPD quickly resolved the situation, and we were able to continue. Thanks for understanding.”

Green Day gets political in Detroit, changes ‘American Idiot’ lyrics to ‘MAGA agenda’

  • Published: Sep. 05, 2024, 6:55 a.m.

DETROIT - From a security scare to a lot of rock music to a little bit of politics, 40,000 concertgoers had the time of their lives at the home of the Detroit Tigers.

Green Day headlined at Comerica Park on Wednesday, Sept. 4 with The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas.

There was four and a half hours of music with some politics mixed in throughout the night.

Before Green Day even took the stage, a QR code appeared where fans could enter for a chance to win an autographed poster from the band. The code took them to a page where they could register to vote or confirm they were registered in order to enter to win.

Later on, Green Day lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics of “American Idiot” in the second verse from “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of a MAGA agenda.”

For what it’s worth, the crowd did erupt in cheers to that. No boos were heard.

Armstrong, at one point, also asked the crowd if they were going to vote.

Toward the end of the concert, he went on a bit of a political rant asking concertgoers to avoid things like propaganda.

“No more propaganda. No more pundits. No more BS. No more left, no more right, no more being confused. All these political parties. All this BS. They’re just propaganda that gets put on our phones from algorithms and corporations. They’re trying to make us think and steal our minds.”

“Tonight is not about that. Tonight is about us. Tonight is not a political party. Tonight isn’t even a party. It’s a celebration!”

The celebration almost didn’t go as planned. The night was a celebration of 30 years since the release of “Dookie” and 20 years since the release of “American Idiot.”

Four songs into “Dookie” and five songs into their setlist, while performing “Longview,” a security guard sprinted on stage, grabbed guitarist Mike Dirnt and led him off stage. The rest of the band ran off with him.

No reason was given. A message appeared on the video screens after a few minutes reading: “Show Pause. Please, standby for details.”

According to Billboard , it was caused by a security scare due to a drone. And the Free Press reports Detroit Police detained the person suspected of flying it. Ten minutes later, the band continued where they left off.

Green Day performed both albums in their entireties along with a few other songs over the course of their 2-hour, 30-minute set. The show ended just after 11 p.m.

The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan on '90s Feuds and Fandom — and How He  Really  Feels About Green Day (Exclusive)

The longtime rocker has gained lots of wisdom in his 30-plus years of music-making

Don Arnold/WireImage; William Patrick Corgan/Instagram

  • The Smashing Pumpkins' frontman Billy Corgan is busier than ever before and moving intentionally through family milestones and work life
  • Not only is he in the middle of touring, but he's also growing his other businesses like the National Wrestling Alliance and Madame ZuZu's Emporium
  • Corgan is also an involved husband and father, sharing kids Philomena and Augustus, as well as a baby on the way, with wife Chloé Mendel Corgan

After 36 years as a professional creative, Billy Corgan is still amazed at where his life has taken him.

A man of many talents, the 57-year-old is continuing to evolve alongside his bandmates in The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, Katie Cole, Jack Bates and Kiki Wong. Corgan is also amidst a time of transformation himself as an entrepreneur and most importantly, as a soon-to-be father of three.

Catching up with PEOPLE, Corgan says that touring lately — with Green Day on the Saviors Tour — has been a bit of a full-circle moment.

"What's wild is that we first played with Green Day in 1994 in Lollapalooza. They weren't just starting out, but they were just starting to be known, and they were a little younger than us," he shares. "Here we are, some 30 years later. They've obviously have had incredible success and sharing that success with us and sharing their stage with us, has been great and a lot of fun."

The Smashing Pumpkins are mixing fan favorites and their own picks on the setlist. With the recent release of Aghori Mhori Mei , the band moves forward while tipping their hat to their classic sound.

"The last record we made, which we started during the pandemic, was this 33-song massive affair. It was very well received but, in making it, I started feeling like, ‘OK. The next album probably should be something a little simpler,' " Corgan shares.

"It came upon this idea of going back to our original sound as a way of seeing if there was anything fresh there, and that's kind of where the album comes from. It's not so much of trying to go backwards."

He continues, "You know how people say you can't go home again? I thought the exercise of trying to go home again, with where the band started, was an interesting one. You would see where you've changed and where you're still the same, or something like that. People seem to really like it, and so, I guess that was a good idea."

At some shows on the Savior Tour, fans get a peek at Corgan's kids — Philomena , 5½, and  Augustus , 8½ — who regularly come onto the stage and dance along to the band's hits.

"Between Washington, D.C. and New York, they were with me on the road with no nanny, no help. So you can imagine trying to be a rock star at night and a dad during the day, with no help," he shares, noting that the stretches are intentional and meaningful for him.

"What's interesting about it and the reason I do it is because it gives us the chance to really bond. They get a real sense of what I do, and they're part of the rhythm of the day — going to the show and waiting backstage and then, of course, they come out on stage with us and dance. That's sort of our family creed. If you're at the show, you have to be part of the show."

The long days are "grounding" for the rock star, who notes, "I want my children to be proud of me, but I want them just to be as proud of me for being a good dad as they are of me being on stage in front of tens of thousands of people. I think the fact that they get to see that so intensely on the road really helps our relationship when we get off the road."

Corgan's children are also seeing the camaraderie of tour life as the rock stars' extended families mix and mingle. After years in which bands on the '90s alternative scene were "super competitive because you are all trying to get on MTV and on radio," there's been a "beautiful" shift, he says.

"You look around you. They've survived and you've survived and you have this kind of mutual respect and you understand what they've been through without necessarily knowing every specific. And they certainly know what you've been through to make it this far," he shares. "In our case, breaking up multiple times and all that type of stuff — to Green Day's credit, they've stuck together, and I think that's at the root of their success. We certainly wish we had stayed together during sort of the difficult times. So, I think when you connect with people from your generation, it's very much kind of a, 'Wow, we made it through this crazy journey and here we still are.' "

Corgan continues, "The other day, Billie Joe's wife [Adrienne Armstrong] and my wife were connecting a little bit. That's really what it's about, right?"

"It becomes more about family and I think when you have that respect for other bands and you understand what their families go through and what they go through, there's a shift," he continues. "It sort of left being about being competitive with one another on the musical landscape and more about admiring that they've held it together. It's hard to explain, but I do think it floats both ways."

Fatherhood has also helped propel Corgan in some of his creative pursuits, and it's encouraged him to keep his family close amid his different endeavors.

"I didn't have children until my late 40s. This thing occurred to me that I never expected, which is, I wanted to make sure that when they were old enough to understand what I did. I wanted them to be proud of me, not for what I'd done before they were born, but what I was doing currently," he explains.

"So it really motivated me to work hard so that I could feel strongly that when they saw what I was doing, they would feel pride and ownership of what I was doing. When you're on stage and there's 45,000 people and your children get up there with you, they're looking out into that same sea of faces," he shares.

"I think that gives them a real sense that my journey, as complicated as it's been, has yielded something that's positive for them because when they're kids, that's with how they think. As they grow older, I want them to then relate back to these experiences and understand that my journey is very unique, and I want them to feel inspired by that because I want them to live their dream, whatever dream that they want to dream."

Corgan's kids get to see him living his dreams, not only on stage but in his many other pursuits. The family is known to spend time together as Madame ZuZu's Emporium , the Highland Park, Ill. tea house that the rocker owns.

"We just announced that David Arquette, who owns the Bozo the Clown brand, is going to teach a painting class as Bozo. He said he's an authenticated Bob Ross painting teacher," he shares.

"It sold out immediately. We're planning a bigger set of Bozo events so that's the kind of stuff we get into there — really fun, collaborative projects."

Corgan is also proud owner of the National Wrestling Alliance, the oldest wrestling organization in existence.

"Seventy-six years and counting," he says with a smile. "Our 76th-anniversary show was August 31, and I actually went in between Green Day tour dates. Start from Nashville, got on the bus, drove all night, work in Philly all day, then back on the bus to drive to Pittsburgh that night."

Glimpses of everything unfolding in Corgan's world can be seen in his recently released reality show, Billy Corgan: Adventures in Carnyland. The show is all about Corgan juggling his many projects with family life.

"People really seem to like that because it's an inside look at why I bother with this crazy life with the professional wrestling. I try to balance it against a very successful, musical life, and my family. Plus, there's always other stuff going on," he shares.

The first season concludes with Corgan's wedding to wife Chloé Mendel Corgan , 31, who is currently expecting the couple's third baby . Philomena and Augustus appear in the show, running around both swept up in and amused by the circus around them. It's just what the hands-on dad hoped for.

"I think that's what I'm trying to do is inspire them — not to make them like me, but to make them like themselves, because I didn't have that; I didn't have that support from my family," he says. "My family would be against me playing music, and so it was painful for me and even when I had success, it kind of became complicated."

Corgan has built that family feeling into everything he does, including his interactions with fans.

"Most fans are based in a sense of idolatry. At the base of it, they don't want you to get off whatever pedestal they think you're on and be a real person. Along the way, I was uncomfortable with that, so I took myself off the pedestal," he says. "There were periods that were very difficult because fans sort of rejected me for being me or being honest. But what's happened, I think is, and I think you see it with the way social media has changed, authenticity and honesty are actually very valuable these days. And most of the fans that have stuck with me, the reason they've stuck with me, is they feel like they know me — not whatever character I play on television."

The rocker finds it "rewarding" to continue to navigate fan relationships and find new ways to connect with people across all his industries.

"I've always endeavored through our music and through our videos, to say, 'Hey, look, what we do here is fun and fantastical. But at the end of the day, these are real people making real music.' And if you can connect with that, there's an even richer experience there."

Everything we know about unexpected interruption at Green Day concert in Detroit

Green day rushed off stage due to drone.

Derick Hutchinson , Lead Digital Editor

DETROIT – The Green Day concert at Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit night was abruptly and unexpectedly interrupted on Wednesday night.

Here’s what we know so far .

Concert details

The concert at Comerica Park began at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, as Green Day continues its “The Saviors Tour.”

The band began this tour July 29 in Washington, D.C. Detroit was the 18th stop, and Green Day is now heading to Coors Field in Denver for the next show on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Green Day announced this tour would take place as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their Diamond album and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot.

What happened Wednesday

Fans were treated to a strange scene early in the concert.

Green Day was only about 15 minutes into their set when they were suddenly rushed off the stage without explanation.

A “show pause” sign took over the empty stage with the message, “Please, standby for details.”

The band returned about seven minutes later and continued playing from the same spot they left off.

Drone caused interruption

Officials from the Detroit Police Department provided some clarification about what interrupted the concert later in the night.

Apparently, Comerica Park security noticed a “potential safety issue” that turned out to be a drone.

The person flying the drone was found outside Comerica Park and detained.

Police said they are still investigating.

Green Day responds

At 9:58 p.m. Wednesday, the band posted on X:

“ Detroit! Sorry for the delay in the show tonight, Stadium security had us clear the stage while they dealt with a potential safety issue. DPD quickly resolved the situation, and we were able to continue. Thanks for understanding .”

Bjerregaard hoping to continue comeback story in Germany

Lucas Bjerregaard is hoping to continue his recent good form as he prepares to tee it up in the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG at Wittelsbacher Golfclub.

Lucas Bjerregaard

The Dane lost his DP World Tour card in 2022 and considered quitting golf earlier this year, however he is back in form with four top ten finishes in his last five starts, including a tie for second on home soil at the Danish Golf Championship.

The 33-year-old has experienced both the highs and lows in his golfing journey after he won DP World Tour titles in 2017 and 2018, before making headlines the following year by defeating Tiger Woods in the quarter-finals of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

“I’ve been working hard on my game for a long time and it’s nice to see that paying off in recent weeks,” he said. “I was at a really low point in my career mentally and I was thinking to myself whether golf is really what I wanted to do moving forwards.

“I’ve started to gain some confidence recently and it’s been by far the most fun I’ve had on a golf course over the last few years. I’m starting to enjoy my golf again.

“I’ve had time to realise what is important in life and even if I did stop playing golf, I know that my family and my children will not think any different of me. It has been a healthy process for me to go through.”

Bjerregaard has climbed to 22nd on the Road to Mallorca Rankings and admits regaining his DP World Tour playing privileges this season would be a proud moment in his golfing career.

“Getting my DP World Tour card back would mean so much to me and would rank extremely high on my career achievements,” he said. “It’s what I’ve been trying to do and right now I’m trying to focus on one week at a time.

“For players in my position it can be tough out here on the Challenge Tour because you have experienced the highs of professional golf, but now I am back here and the fields are so much stronger. It can be a lonely place at times but it is a great Tour and a fantastic platform for these young stars.”

A strong field assembles in Neuburg an der Donau this week, including Road to Mallorca Number One Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Number Three Joakim Lagergren, who has two victories in his last two starts.

The first round will get under way at 7:25am local time, with Bjerregaard teeing it up alongside England’s David Horsey and German Philipp Katich at 8:20am.

History of Perm Krai

For the first time the word “perm” was mentioned in “The Tale of Past Years”, a fundamental source in the interpretation of the history of the Eastern Slavs created in the early 12th century. Perm were one of the peoples who paid tribute to the Kievan Rus. They were found by the first Russian expeditions to the Urals, to the north of the Kama River basin. Later, in Russian chronicles, this territory was called Old Perm or Perm Vychegodskaya.

Unlike Perm Vychegodskaya, the land along the upper reaches of the Kama River became known as the Great Perm. This name is often found in the written monuments of the 14th century. In the 14th - 17th centuries, the Great Perm included extensive lands along the Kama from its origins in the west to the Ural mountain range in the east, and from the upper reaches of the Pechora River in the north to the Chusovaya River in the south.

Novgorod merchants were the first ones who got interested in the Great Perm (furs and tributes). In the 14th - the first half of the 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Moscow began to encroach on the lands in the upper Kama. In the early 15th century, the first Russian settlements were founded in the Great Perm.

More Historical Facts…

In the second half of the 15th century, after the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist, the area became part of the united Russian state. Russia significantly expanded its borders to the east and gained access to new natural resources.

In the 17th century, the town of Sol Kamskaya (Solikamsk) became an important center of military, economic and cultural assimilation of the Middle Urals in the north. In the south-east, the newly constructed town of Kungur played the same role. In the first quarter of the 18th century, about 46,000 people lived on the territory of Great Perm, about 65% of them were Russians.

Until 1727, the Middle Urals was part of Siberian gubernia with the center in Tobolsk, then Perm was part of Kazan gubernia, and, from 1781, by order of Catherine II, the Perm region ruled by a governor-general was formed.

It remained the main mining area of the Russian Empire until the end of the 19th century. There were more than 110 mining plants producing cast iron, iron, steel. For a long time, it was the main provider of copper. Salt production was also developed. In the east of the Urals large deposits of platinum were discovered. By the end of the 19th century, gold mining grew twice.

The 20th century was marked by intense growth of the local industry: engineering structure became more complex and rich. During the Second World War, more than 120 plants were evacuated in the Western Urals. Such branches of industry as chemical, non-ferrous metallurgy, oil-processing developed intensely; oil deposits prospecting began; a number of pulp and paper mills was concentrated in the region; new towns grew on the basis of new industries.

In 1938, Perm Oblast was formed. In 1940-1957, it was called Molotov Oblast. In Soviet times, the Komi-Perm Autonomous District was part of Perm oblast. In 1993, with the adoption of the Constitution of Russia, it became an independent subject of the Russian Federation.

In 2003, a referendum was held in which the residents of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Perm Autonomous District supported the unification of the two regions into one. In 2005, these two administrative regions ceased to exist and the united Perm Krai was formed.
