High end stores to check out and yummy places to eat. We took the hotel shuttle down so we could wander around. It turned into a sampling of desserts with lunch in between. We walked into Watsons for first aid stuff, looked at jewelry at Wah Chan, had some Haagen Dazs and Famous Amos. Went into Hugo Boss and Adidas. Checked out Leica cameras - very cool. Mostly window shopped as luxury brands. Staff were very nice. Clean and comfortable in the air conditioning.

Guerney Plaza Penang Shops look better now. Not sure if they have refurbished the place. 8 levels of shops. A good variety of shops. Love the sticker label shop

Oh great, another huge shopping centre that I can get completely lost in because there are no information booths, and all the information panels aren't working. Seriously, at least in KL they had some people sitting in a booth to tell me what to look for and where to go (politely of course), but not, not this one. Let's just assume that everybody has intuition to be able to actually find a place that sells a bowl and spoon. It's not as if they don't have any time on their hands, or their mobile phone happens to be working. Yeah, inconvenience.

This is one of the favourite for to go for lunch and tea time. and all the service crew was friendly and inform customers about daily specials, suggestions desserts and beverages. And food and beverages price is reasonable.

There are three main malls on the Penang Island. And sixteen more being constructed as we speak. Gurney Plaza is and mine and many of my coworker's favorite in variety of stores and location. GP is located on Gurney Drive (makes sense) a short walk away from the more luxurious and newer Paragon Mall. There's a Parkson Department store on one end of the mall along with a mix of popular fashion stores (Top Shop/Man, H&M, Mango, Guess etc) on the first floor and smaller boutique stores on the upper stores. On the seventh floor is a fitness center, Jatomi Gym, and a movie theater. Best features of this mall: + Cold Storage on the basement level + Indoor food stalls and restaurants (also basement level) + Nando's + Outside seating and cafe area between GP and G hotel I'm not a fan of: - Their parking garage is a maze/black hole - Escalators are only accessible from the parking area which is a maze/blackhole - Crowds... especially during the peak travel seasons and holidays

This is a large, modern mall that is seemingly in transition, with several stores closed -- but still labeled on the maps and directional signs throughout the mall -- and several renovation projects in progress. (It's actually kind of a weird mixed feel between a modern mall and an older, worn one to me, but I felt that the modern feel prevailed.) There are a few twists and turns to what at first glance can seem to be a relatively straightforward mall -- several floors have additional halls, and a few of those halls connect to an additional three- or four-story section of further shops (mostly stores selling shoes, wellness, and younger-person-focused fashion). While it had steady business when I visited, I still found the mall to be somewhat quiet and boring; that said, I liked the liveliness of the loud and bustling underground floor, where there are numerous restaurants and food stalls, plus a wide variety of stores selling everyday basics. Speaking of food, there are several restaurants throughout the mall, plus a large outdoor area with 10 or so restaurants and bars. A movie theater is located on the top floor, and there are at least a couple of arcades and a laser tag venue. The front of the mall once was across the road from the Strait of Malacca, but it now looks out on a construction desert of a massive land reclamation project.

Wanna go somewhere where familiar brands are found even when you are away from home? this is your plaza! Run by capitmall so it's not surprising the layout and brand names available are not strange to Singaporeans. Easy to get to if you use a taxi or Grab.

Squidboy in gurney plaza sucks when it comes to service, they have 4 people behind the counter but took 15 minutes to serve 3 people as the owner kept fussing around behind the counter even if she doesnt know what she is doing...

Photo of Tracy F.

Gurney plaza is a famous mall in Penang, and the best, to my opinion. Is is a high class shopping mall, so if you want a bargain, it is not a place for you.

Plaza Gurney's anchor tenant is Parkson. There is a huge Golden Screen Cinemas Cineplex with 12 screens making this the 2nd biggest GCS in Malaysia after the one at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur. In 2008 a new wing opened to public; adding 150,000sq ft of retail space to Plaza Gurney. Right next to Plaza Gurney you can find the wonderful 5 star G Hotel . This is definitely one of the best hotels at the island, and a perfect place to stay if you fancy a bit of shopping.

Gurney Plaza is easy to find, every taxi driver knows the mall. You can also go by bus. When you travel from Batu Ferringhi , you take the bus to Georgetown. From the center of Georgetown you take the bus to Batu Ferringhi. Give the driver a notice in advance that you need to get out at Gurney Drive and the driver will indicate when you're almost there so you can press the stop button to get out. Usually you will get out of the bus at the big roundabout. From there it is a 5 minute walk to the main entrance (which is located at the sea side).

The 5 Best Malls in Penang, Malaysia

Straits Quay marina, Penang, Malaysia.

Do you like air-conditioning, high-end retail shops, and shelter from the rain and sun? If so, you’ll like these malls in Penang. Penang is no stranger to malls, which means the malls here are spectacularly well-equipped. Find your regular favorites, including Starbucks, Debenhams and Swarovski, as well as al fresco restaurants, fitness centers and (yes) karaoke houses.

1. gurney plaza.

Shopping Mall

Gurney Plaza shopping centre in George Town Penang, Malaysia.

With anchor tenants like Golden Screen Cinemas, Parkson (department store), and Cold Storage (grocery store), is it any wonder this mall has one of the state’s highest daily footfall? Featuring over 380 retail shops, including Timbaland, Armani and Guess, as well as an al fresco stretch of eateries like Winter Warmers, Secret Recipe and Dome, this mall is a haven for shoppers and foodies alike. More affordable fashion stores are located on the fourth and fifth floors. There are also several tech shops selling mobile phones, laptops and related accessories in the new wing.

2. Gurney Paragon

MONKL fashion store in Gurney Paragon, Penang.

Also set along the extensive Gurney Drive, this shopping mall is the higher-end, less crowded version of Gurney Plaza — which incidentally is only a two-minute walk away. With over 40 retail fashion stores, 30 eateries, a TGV cinema, a Times bookstore, and one of the most successful fitness centers in Penang, this shopping mall will please your palate, senses, and running shoes. Often referred to simply as ‘Paragon,’ this shopping mall is open between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. (eateries may be open until later). Like Gurney Plaza, there are two entrances to this mall — Kelawai or Gurney — so if you’re taking a GrabCar, be sure to indicate which entrance you want to be dropped off.

3. Queensbay Mall

Clinique Laboratories cosmetic store in Queensbay mall. Penang, Malaysia

Take the Jelutong Highway to Bayan Lepas and you’ll find yourself riding up to Penang’s largest shopping mall, Queensbay. This mall is a sprawling indoor mall spanning 2,500,000 sq. feet, which means you’ll be walking — a lot. But in the name of food and shopping, this may well be worth it, as Queensbay houses popular stores like Giordano, Levi’s and British India. Main anchor tenants here include AEON (a department and grocery store) and the Golden Screen Cinemas. Book lovers will appreciate the last remaining Borders on this side of peninsula, while those who enjoy coffee and cake might prefer a trip to well-established names like Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Dome and Starbucks.

4. Straits Quay

Straits Quay marina, Penang, Malaysia.

This is the place to go if you want to shop, eat, and walk leisurely after both. The extensive promenade along the quay front is the main attraction of this mall , where small yachts and boats rock gently on the waves. Shops here include Royal Selangor and Monica Quen, and there are eateries like Blue Reef, Healy Mac’s and Papparich. For more affordable bargains, the mall also hosts a ‘market’ in the center court every weekend. You’ll be able to find pop-up cards, mobile phone cases and handmade jewelry here.

5. Juru Auto City

Mercedes-Benz Auto City, Penang, Malaysia.

Designed like an American strip mall, Auto City is located on the Penang mainland in Juru. This is where roadshows, carnivals and exhibitions are often held, but if you’re not here for any of them, this outdoor complex also includes highly successful fashion boutiques, restaurants, and over 30 automobile brands. Club-hoppers may enjoy Bed, a happening clubhouse after sunset, while karaoke-enthusiasts will like Citi-Box. Eateries here include Seoul Garden, Manhattan Fish Market and Golden Triangle Restaurant.

Night Time View Of Gurney Paragon - Popular Penang Shopping Mall

This modern mall appeals especially to the fashion-conscious with trendy local and international fashion outlets!

However, this shopping mall doesn’t have benches for those who need a break. When we were last there, we noticed that it is less crowded compared to Gurney Plaza.

Prangin Mall - Shopping Mall Close To Komtar, Penang

Besides that, there’s relatively new competition with 1 st  Avenue Mall that is accessible via a link bridge from Prangin Mall.

Despite all that, Prangin Mall is the place to go for  affordable local-brand apparel  and  electronic gadgets .

Connectivity is excellent too because you can catch a free Rapid Penang CAT bus  opposite Prangin Mall, which goes through different tourist sites in George Town!

Visitors especially love coming to this  less-crowded mall  to catch a movie and relax.

It hosts a variety of electronic shops on the second and third floor, making it the place to scout for second-hand MacBooks, and computers!

The food court on Level-4 also serves a wide range of food at reasonable prices. Moreover, the opening of a  Village Grocer  here is bound to draw the crowd back.

Just remember to bring a jacket because the air conditioning is freezing!

Shopping Mall In Tanjung Tokong

Tanjung Tokong is a suburb of George Town along the northeastern coast of Penang! Here is where you can find another seaside mall!

7. Straits Quay Marina Mall

Housing a performing arts centre and a convention centre, Straits Quay is a seaside mall with an elegant façade and many swanky Western and Asian eateries.

Entrance Of Straits Quay Marina Mall In Penang

As a retail marina fronting the sea, the Straits Quay Marina Mall boasts a decent mix of tenants. It is however, the spectacular views that are not to be missed if you’re more of a window shopper anyways.

Main Hall Of Straits Quay Marina Mall In Penang

What we like to do best at Straits Quay Marina Mall is to take a relaxing stroll along the seafront to admire the numerous docked private yachts. This is a popular spot for residents to walk their pampered pooches too.

Or you can dine with a view  at one of the restaurants facing the quay!

Private Yachts At Straits Quay Tanjung Tokong, Penang

If you are a keen shopper, note that there aren’t many big brands here. Although, the selection of  bespoke merchants  should keep you in the mall for a few hours.

Queensbay Mall Penang Shopping Mall

That aside, this shopping paradise plays host to many popular brands across different shopping categories, with the AEON departmental store and dining outlets standing out.

9. Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex

Another shopping sanctuary in the southern region of Penang is Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex. Here, you can shop for affordable gadgets, home essentials, and clothes.

In terms of aesthetics, it lacks the extravagance of newer malls but makes up for it with a decent array of mid-to-lower-priced items.

Over the weekends, the mall is quite packed and because it doesn’t have the luxury of space, parking spaces are pretty limited as well.

But if you’re looking for the best foreign currency exchange rate in Georgetown, then this mall is your best bet.

All in all, you can swing by here if you’re in town, or if you’re on the hunt for cheap IT repair work or FOREX rates.
