Thanksgiving Tradition: Celebrate 40 years with Ontario's longest-running studio tour

One of Ontario's longest-running studio tours returns this weekend, marking its 40th anniversary.

The ' Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour ' features 30 local artists, including painters, potters, sculptors, photographers, wood turners, jewellers and mixed media artists.

There are 20 stops on the free, self-guided tour covering the beautiful rural landscapes of Oro-Medonte, Horseshoe Valley and along the Lake Simcoe shoreline to Orillia.

Pam and Paul Allen, who work from their home-based studios in the Village of Marchmont, have been a popular stop on the tour for over 30 years.

Pam became known for her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, and Paul for his custom-designed furniture.

"People enjoy coming to our place," said Pam. "They love the property."

"The tour is a lot of fun," added Paul. "We always have fun decorations and music. Visitors come to see us and our art, but also for the entertainment value."

The 'Images Studio Tour' runs from Friday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Thanksgiving long weekend.

2023 Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour – pick a route; here’s your ultimate guide

By Press Release

September 27, 2023

If you take a look at this year’s Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour, you’ll find a wonderful array of award-winning painters, potters, photographers, sculptors, woodturners, jewellers and mixed media artists – 30 artists in total, who will be showcasing their work at 20 different stops. Together, they will make the 40th anniversary 2023 Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour an event not to be missed.

With so many choices, it can be a challenge to figure out where to start and how to visit as many stops as possible over the four-day event. This year, our regional tourism organization has come to the rescue, with its “Ultimate Guide to the Images Studio Tour.” Orillia & Lake Country Tourism has broken down the tour into five easy-to-follow routes, each featuring artists in their studios or at pop-up galleries.

The Images Studio Tour takes place October 6 to 9 from 10 am to 5 pm daily, so you have lots of time to explore some or all of the routes suggested. Whether you choose the Orillia, Severn, Horseshoe Valley Road, Old Barrie Road or Lake Simcoe route, you will discover exceptional art, as well as other attractions to help you make the most of your Thanksgiving outing. As you explore the expansive farmland and canopied back roads of Severn, the Sunshine City, rolling hills of Oro-Medonte, rural vistas of Old Barrie Road, or the shores of Lake Simcoe, you will quickly discover why so many artists call this area of Simcoe County home.

And, as we’ve discovered during past Images Studio Tours, the routes can be followed by vehicle or by bicycle. If you’re planning a bike tour to experience the area’s beautiful fall colours, why not incorporate art into your adventure? To follow the Lake Simcoe route, you can take advantage of the Oro-Medonte rail trail as well as the Ridge Road cycling route. The Severn route includes a side trip into Coldwater, a popular stop for cyclists. And if you want hills, there are many options. Check the Cycle Simcoe website for tips and route details.

To get ready for your self-guided tour, whether by car or bike, you can download a map from the Images Studio Tour website in either a digital version or to print out. In addition, each artist will have hard copies of the tour map, complete with directions and artist descriptions. You can also pick up this printed map and guide from the Peter Street Fine Arts Gallery & Studio in Orillia in advance of the tour.

Don’t miss this opportunity to support and encourage local artists, while enjoying a colourful fall outing. For details about the artists and studio locations, visit the Images Tour website and Orillia & Lake Country Tourism .

Harry potter tour revenue surges past $1 billion.

The Harry Potter tour in Leavesden is a big money spinner for Warner Bros.

Britain's Harry Potter movie tour has generated more than $1 billion of revenue since it opened 12 years ago according to its latest financial statements which show that sales doubled to a record $184.4 million (£149.1 million) in 2022 as the end of pandemic restrictions cast a powerful spell on the attraction.

The tour is set inside two cream-coloured cavernous soundstages at Leavesden Studios on the outskirts of London. Owned by media giant Warner Bros. Discovery WBD , Leavesden was originally an aircraft factory before it was converted into a movie studio in 1994 so that James Bond flick GoldenEye could film there.

Warner bought Leavesden in 2010 making it the first studio to have a permanent European base since Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s. Leavesden re-opened in 2012 after Warner invested more than $123.7 million (£100 million) in the site. Since then it has been home to well over 50 productions including all eight Potter films, the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs and last year's highest-grossing movie, Barbie .

The studio generates 39.7% of Leavesden's total revenue which rose by $87.5 million (£70.7 million) to a record $305.8 million (£247.2 million) in the year to 31 December 2022 as we revealed in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. The increase was entirely driven by the tour as studio revenue dipped 2.9% to $121.3 million (£98.1 million).

Revenue is increasing at Warner Bros' Leavesden studios

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That s Much Easier To Use

Earth s new second moon is as big as the statue of liberty and scientists just found its origin, new apple id password reset issue hitting iphone ipad and macbook users.

Over the past few years soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis has caused consumers to cut streaming subscriptions leading to studios scaling back the number of shows in production.

It didn't stop there as Leavesden faced the challenge of strikes in Hollywood when actors and writers downed their tools for more than six months last year in a bid to boost the royalties they receive. Warner is still counting the cost of this and on February 23 announced that revenue for the fourth quarter of 2023 was down 7% to $10.2 billion partly driven by strike-induced production delays. On the day of the announcement its shares closed 10% down at $8.61, almost the lowest price since the group was created by the merger of AT&T’s T WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc in April 2022.

The impact is being felt far beyond the studios as special effects firm Framestore, which created the spellbinding visuals in the Potter movies, said it expects margins "to be impacted" by the strikes in 2023.

In contrast, the tour behind the scenes of the Potter movies has been a dream ticket for Warner. Leavesden's net profit more than doubled last year to $87.8 million (£71 million) which was largely driven by the tour given that the studio's revenue reversed. Since 2012 Leavesden has generated total net profits of $589.6 million (£476.7 million) and paid $289.4 million (£234 million) of dividends to Warner.

Guests can wander through recreations of classic Harry Potter locations (photo by Andrew Aitchison / ... [+] In pictures via Getty Images)

Since it opened 12 years ago more than 18 million people have streamed through the tour's turnstiles generating a total of $1.2 billion (£935.8 million) of revenue – 67.5% more than the studio has made.

The tour is filled with props and sets from the movies with the latest addition being Professor Sprout's Greenhouse which opened in summer 2022. From the outside, the giant greenhouse appears to be in the grip of a giant vine which covers the walls inside. Its tendrils spread into flower boxes where plants seem to sprout from them. Visitors can uproot them to reveal a squealing shrub as Harry and his chums did in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

As we recently revealed , the tour has been so successful that Warner has invested more than $115 million in its first overseas outpost which opened in Tokyo last year and is 50% bigger than its British counterpart.

Leavesden operates the Japanese facility as well as the wildly popular chain of Potter shops and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage show which premiered in London in 2016 to critical acclaim. Since then it has expanded to five other countries and is still growing as the financial statements reveal that "in 2022 the company invested in another production of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ."

Despite the logjam in Hollywood, Leavesden too is expanding. Last year it announced plans to build 11 new sound stages which will increase production capacity by more than 50% and will create 4,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is expanding to stay in the game in the face of increasing competition.

Britain has become a popular location for filming thanks to its generous fiscal benefits which give studios a reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the amount they spend in the country. It explains why Shepperton Studios, just outside London, is planning a 1.2 million square feet expansion which will make it the world's second-biggest studio.

Likewise, nearby Pinewood plans to spend $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion) on new facilities including a studio tour which will put it in even more direct competition with Leavesden. Over the past 80 years Pinewood has been home to everything from the Pink Panther and Paddington to Superman and Star Wars so it may take more than the wave of a magic wand to beat.

Nelly Korda’s record-tying win streak resonates with Scottie Scheffler, TOUR pros

Despite four wins in five starts, Scottie Scheffler says his run doesn’t compare

Change Text Size

After winning the RBC Heritage in a Monday finish, Scottie Scheffler was asked if he felt a sense of competition between himself and Nelly Korda. It was a fair question, as the top-ranked men’s and women’s players have gone on simultaneous tears this spring. Scheffler has won four of his last five TOUR starts, finishing second in the other, while Korda tied an LPGA record Sunday by winning her fifth straight start at The Chevron Championship.

Yet despite being amidst a historic run as the first player since Tiger Woods (2007-08) to record five straight top-two finishes on TOUR, Scheffler didn’t see his stretch as comparable.

“One of the people here asked me, like, ‘Is this turning into a competition between you and Nelly?’ and I was like, I don't know, man, I think if it's a competition, she's got me pretty beat right now,” Scheffler said Monday. “Five wins in a row … it's pretty special stuff. To win four times in a row and then show up at a major championship and win is extremely impressive. So I'm extremely happy for her.”

Scheffler joked that Korda’s season-opening T16 finish was “just terrible; I can’t believe she did that” – clearly in jest – as the top-ranked women’s pro has since taken flight with victories at the LPGA Drive On Championship, Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, T-Mobile Match Play and The Chevron Championship, the latter four of which have occurred in the last five calendar weeks.

With Sunday’s victory at the LPGA’s first major championship of 2024, Korda tied Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez with wins in five straight LPGA starts. Only three players have authored such streaks on TOUR: Tiger Woods, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan.

Woods won five straight starts across 2007-08, six straight across 1999-2000, and seven straight across 2006-07. Hogan won six straight starts in 1948. Nelson won a record 11 consecutive starts in 1945.

Korda’s run – which Scheffler would’ve paralleled if not for a one-stroke defeat to Stephan Jaeger at last month’s Texas Children’s Houston Open – holds a well-earned spot in golf history. Scheffler and his fellow TOUR pros have taken notice. Wyndham Clark called Korda’s run “amazing” after the RBC Heritage’s final round, and J.T. Poston described it as “hard to fathom.”

Last fall, Korda teamed with Tony Finau at the mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational, finishing T4. Finau came away impressed, in a way foreshadowing what was to come.

"In a sense, to me, I look up to Nelly," Finau said at the time. "Even though she’s younger than me, she’s an incredible golfer. She’s been the No. 1 player in the world in the women’s game, and she’s someone that I think quite frankly a lot of us can still even learn from, even on the men’s side."

After winning the Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday for his eighth TOUR title, Billy Horschel threaded the runs of Korda and Scheffler.

“I had a three-week stretch where I finished second, first, first and I thought I was something special at that time, but what Nelly and Scottie are doing is unreal,” said Horschel.

“I can't imagine that. And over a period of time, not just five weeks in a row, they've done over six, seven, eight weeks. I mean, it's unreal golf. And to think about who they're playing against in today's generation of more talented players and doing what they're still doing, man, I'd say we're not going to see anything like that again, but I'm sure we will. You just have to stand up and applaud them because it's pretty special. You know, as a golf fan, I'm just lucky to be able to see that because at the end of the day, I'm a golf fan at heart.”

And fans have lately witnessed two generational superstars playing some of the best golf possible.

“I think we’ve all seen the golf swing; I wish I could see it more in person,” Scheffler said of Korda. “Obviously some great golf, some historic stuff, and hopefully she keeps it up.”

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”

Madonna and three children.

Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.

Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?

I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.  Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?

Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years.  David has played guitar since he was a child.  Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.  There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.

Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?

I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life.  Singing “Bad Girl” was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.

Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?

Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.

David during the show’s finale.

David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?

“Mother and Father” is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar.  He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.

Estere

How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?

While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler.  She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability.  So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.

Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?

I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.  And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.

The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?

This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

Michael Scott is one of the artists featured during the Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour taking place Oct. 6 to 9.

NEWS RELEASE IMAGES STUDIO TOUR ************************* As one of Ontario’s longest-running studio tours, the Images Thanksgiving Studio Tour has become a favourite weekend outing for both local residents and visitors.

The free self-guided tour takes place Oct. 6 to 9 throughout the beautiful rural landscapes of Oro-Medonte, Horseshoe Valley and along the Lake Simcoe shoreline to Orillia.

This year’s 40th-anniversary tour, with 20 different locations, will feature many of the favourite stops from the past four decades and will also showcase new artists. One of those is painter Michael Scott, who will be at Stop W on Old Barrie Road, where he has transformed his grandfather’s homestead workshop into an artist studio and retreat.

Scott, who grew up at the family property just outside of Orillia, started out doodling and life drawing as a kid while sitting in church with his dad. He said he enjoyed drawing and listening at the same time.

“Drawing was a source of joy for me,” said Scott.

As it turned out, the art of snowboarding was also a source of joy for Scott. Following high school, he moved to Whistler, B.C., where he became a professional snowboarder. Scott described it as a life of big jumps, filming, and lots of photography for magazines, including many cover shots — “having a blast.” While out West, Scott also returned to school at Simon Fraser University.

“When I finished school, and my body couldn’t handle the snowboarding anymore, I moved back to Orillia and pursued my art. It was a natural progression, I guess, to go into something else I loved.”

Scott reconnected with friends and began getting together regularly with fellow artists to draw and paint. He also spent time in the Muskoka and Georgian Bay areas, where he worked as a carpenter and was inspired by the scenery during barge trips to and from job sites.

Inspired by his artist friends, the work of other artists, and the land he knew so well, Scott realized that he needed his own place to work.

“I needed to find my voice and paint what I know — to be authentic.”

When you visit Scott’s studio, you immediately see how he has accomplished this and how his paintings evoke such strong emotions.

“I add my own personal expression into my paintings and hopefully that’s what some people respond to. Maybe they can understand my attempt at being honest and can look at a painting and feel how the grass is growing or how the water is reflecting or how the clouds are moving. Sometimes people tell me that my landscapes remind them of places where they’ve been or have loved.”

Scott also credits his years of life drawing as being crucial to developing his style, along with his relationship with the oil paint that he uses.

“All that life drawing really pays off — learning the skill of controlling your hand first means you can then get loose and creative. Once you know the rules, then you can break them.”

When it comes to the medium, Scott shared his insight into the oil paint he uses.

“Paint is such an incredible thing — it almost has a mind of its own, so you have to let it breathe a bit. It’s luxurious stuff. Seeing the way it reacts with itself is cool, so you have to let it do it’s one thing, rather than try and control it too much.”

Scott is also quick to point out that other artists, such as local Images tour artist Tony Bianco, the Shillings, along with influential artists like Vincent Van Gogh, have all provided inspiration.

“You have to be aware and look at everybody. We (artists) are all just whispering to each other down through the generations.”

As for the future, Scott simply hopes that the inspiration continues.

“You just have to be in the right spot to catch it. I have faith that it will keep coming; at least I hope that it will.”

You can visit Michael Scott at his studio during the Images Studio Tour, Oct. 6 to 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. There are 30 artists participating in this year’s tour at 20 different stops. Don’t miss this opportunity to support local artists and enjoy a colourful fall outing. For details, visit the Images Studio Tour website .

The outing came days after Cartwright revealed that she and Taylor fought over her making more money than him .

“I know whenever me and Jax were going through that where I was making more money for once, I could tell that was a shift for him,” she told pal Scheana Shay on Tuesday night’s episode of “Vanderpump Rules.”

“We were fighting a lot because of that alone.”
