Vacationing in Kauai and haven’t snorkeled yet? Just like Oahu and Maui, you’ll find amazing Kauai snorkeling beaches and tours, usually much less crowded than what you’ll find in those Hawaiian islands.

Snorkeling is an inexpensive, must-do activity when visiting Kauai, one of the best cheap things to do in Kauai !

With just a mask and a snorkel (mouthpiece for breathing), you can spend hours exploring the stunning coral reefs all around Kauai, and the hundreds of species of colorful tropical fish that inhabit the corals.

Experienced snorkeler? If you can expand your boundaries to the outer reefs, you can expect to see manta rays, moray eels, Hawaiian green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, octopuses, and even migrating humpback whales in winter can be spotted in these waters.

Best Kauai Snorkeling

What are the best kauai snorkeling beaches for beginners and families with kids.

Lydgate Beach Park and Poipu Beach are two of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for beginners and families with kids, with all the basic amenities and shallow, clear and calm waters for snorkeling.

Lydgate Beach Park, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches year round, with shallow protected pools

Ke’e Beach and Anini Beach are also great options, but limited to summers when the waters are more amenable to snorkeling. Ke’e Beach needs advance reservations and planning.

What are the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for seeing tropical fish?

While all the Kauai snorkeling beaches mentioned here offer hundreds of varieties of tropical fish to admire, Tunnels Beach and the outer reefs of Anini Beach and Poipu Beach provide a richer marine life viewing experience with opportunities to spot eels, rays, dolphins and octopuses.

Beautiful Poipu Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for families with kids and beginners

Which Kauai snorkeling beaches are less crowded?

Hideaways Beach (summer only) and Salt Pond Beach Park (all year round) are two of the best secluded, less crowded, Kauai snorkeling beaches.

Hideaways Beach is more for the experienced snorkeler and requires a challenging hike down to the remote beach.

Salt Pond Beach Park is fine for all levels of snorkelers and families, and is off the beaten track. Weekdays are best, since this beach is popular with locals who frequent it on weekends.

What will I see while snorkeling in Kauai?

Kauai’s underwater marine life is simply amazing, ranging from varieties of corals , invertebrates and colorful tropical fish to larger marine life like reef sharks, dolphins, Hawaiian green sea turtles, octopuses, eels and rays.

Common beautiful tropical fish you will see include colorful tangs, triggerfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, goatfish, wrasse, surgeonfish, and more.

Rare or endemic fish species include bandit angelfish, Hawaiian hogfish, and Achilles tang.

In winter, you may even spot migrating humpback whales in most of these locations. Spinner dolphins breaching the surface are also fairly common.

Best Kauai Snorkeling Tours for the Na Pali Coast

Want an unforgettable Kauai adventure? And short on time?

Combine two of the best things to do in Kauai : snorkel Kauai’s coral reefs while taking in amazing views of the stunning Na Pali coast!

Kauai’s rugged Na Pali coast with secluded beaches, emerald-green lush valleys and steep cliffs is accessible only by boat (except for an epic hike along the famed Kalalau Trail ), and you have a bunch of tour options.

For a thrilling, adventurous alternative, consider zodiac raft tours that can take you to hidden sea caves, coastal waterfalls and remote beaches. You need be physically fit and ready for a rough, exciting ride.

On our first trip to Kauai, we took this raft adventure tour, Na Pali 1/2 Day Snorkel , and had a great experience. The raft was nimble and maneuverable, zigzagging along the stunning coast to sea caves and waterfalls.

We stopped to snorkel at Nu’alolo Kai, with coral reefs to die for!

If you’re seeking a luxury option, then you can’t go wrong with a deluxe catamaran or sailboat tour, and they typically offer free drinks and meals.

We opted for this Na Pali Coast Kauai Snorkel and Sail tour when we had a friend along with a queasy stomach, who definitely didn’t want to risk the motorized raft.

The sailboat turned out to be an excellent choice, with a friendly knowledgeable crew, sumptuous breakfast and lunch, and wine and beer after snorkeling.

Na Pali coast snorkeling was an experience of a lifetime!

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the North Shore

1. ke’e beach (haena state park).

Ke’e Beach is one of my favorite Kauai snorkeling beaches in summer, and definitely the prettiest beach!

Beautiful Kee Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches in Haena State Park

Located in the Haena State Park , snorkeling at Ke’e Beach can easily be combined with other activities like hiking part of the Kalalau Trail along the stunning Na Pali coast line and visiting the restored taro fields , making it a full day family outing!

K e’e Beac h , one the best North Shore beaches in Kauai , is small, beautiful, surrounded by coconut palm trees, and with amazing views of the Na Pali cliffs.

Ke’e Beach also has an extensive coral reef, and the water is clear and warm in summer, making for ideal snorkeling conditions. The water is shallow and under water visibility is good.

Extensive coral reef on the the right side of Kee Beach, one of the prettiest Kauai snorkeling beaches

Ke’e Beach is excellent for families with kids, with restrooms, showers and lifeguards.

Beginning snorkeler? You can start snorkeling in the lagoon protected by the reef.

Stronger swimmers and experienced snorkelers can head to the right side of the beach, with rocks jutting out from the shore – you can expect to see a lot more fish, coral and even a Hawaiian green sea turtle or two!

Colorful yellowtail coris wrasse on coral reefs

Winter is another story though, I wouldn’t recommend swimming or snorkeling at Ke’e Beach due to the typical high surf conditions.

Can you stay till late evening? You don’t want to miss the sunset on Ke’e Beach, typically one of the most colorful ones you’ll see on Kauai!

Colorful sunset over the tide pools at Ke'e Beach in Haena State Park

Since Ke’e Beach is in Haena State Park, home to the very popular Kalalau Trail, you will need to carefully plan your snorkeling trip, and make advance reservations.

Consult our detailed guide to visiting Haena State Park for planning.

Location: Haena State Park, North Shore of Kauai Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers Food Nearby: No shops or restaurants close by Parking: Ke’e Beach Parking Lot, reservations needed, shuttle recommended

2. Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach) is a hidden gem, one of the best snorkeling locations in Kauai .

Fringing coral reefs on Tunnels Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore

Tunnels Beach , another pretty North Shore Kauai Beach on the Maniniholo Bay, is just 5 miles west of Hanalei on the Kuhio Highway.

While you’ll see colorful tropical fish in every location mentioned here, Tunnels Beach has a unique coral reef with lava tubes, tunnels, underwater caves and other formations, making it an exciting spot to explore.

Snorkelers of different abilities can snorkel here, though beginners should restrict themselves to the safer inner reef.

I like Tunnels Beach because it has many different zones and habitats, from shallow lagoons to deep drop-offs.

If you’re a stronger swimmer, head to the left side of the beach where there are some rocks marking the entrance to the reef. You’ll find all kinds of tropical fish here, including jacks, arc-eye hawkfish, and Hawaiian monk seals.

Spotted boxfish on coral reefs

This beach is in a residential neighborhood, and has no facilities. Parking is also limited.

I recommend you park at the adjacent Haena Beach Park (not to be confused with Haena State Park), enjoy the amenities there, and then walk roughly half a mile northeast to Tunnels Beach.

Tunnels Beach is also a summer snorkeling destination like Ke’e Beach above, winter snorkeling is risky with dangerous surf conditions, rough waves, and strong currents.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, 5 miles west of Hanalei Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: None Food Nearby: Head to Hanalei for food options Parking: Small lot, best option may be Haena Beach Park Directions: Look for “Tunnels” signs around mile marker 8, access road off Kuhio Highway

3. Anini Beach

Anini Beach is renowned for the longest, widest coral reef along the Kauai coastline. And with that comes almost unlimited snorkeling spots!

Extensive coral reef all along Anini Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore

The fringing reef provides a natural barrier from waves and currents. You can expect a safe, protected area for snorkeling in calm and clear waters, though the depth varies from shallow (near the beach) to deep (further from the beach).

An ini Beach is one of the best family-friendly snorkeling beaches on Kauai’s North Shore , and unlike Ke’e Beach, doesn’t need a lot of advance planning and reservations.

You have a whole bunch of facilities: restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shady trees, and even campsites (you need permits for overnight camping).

Beautiful sandy Anini Beach, one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beaches

But no lifeguards, so keep an eye on the kids!

Beginners and kids should stay within the inner reef, where you can see a variety of tropical fish and the occasional sea turtle.

Need a richer experience? If you are a strong swimmer and experienced snorkeler, you can venture to the outer reef where you may even see rays, eels, octopuses and reef sharks (the smaller kind!).

Endangered Hawaiian green sea turtle swimming in the coral reefs

But watch out for channels where the currents may be strong and unpredictable.

As with the other North Shore beaches, snorkeling in winter is dangerous here.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, near Hanalei Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shade trees Food Nearby: Head to Princeville or Kilauea for food options Parking: Road parking Directions: Anini Beach, Anini Road, Kilauea

4. Hideaways Beach (Pali Ke Kua Beach)

Hideaways Beach is precisely that, a beach tucked away and quite difficult to get to, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for those seeking to get away from crowds.

best snorkeling tour kauai

Hideaways Beach is more for the thrill seeker, the adventure tourist. You have to hike a steep trail (sometimes with the help of ropes), down the cliffs to the beach.

This is definitely a hard hike, especially when the trail is wet and slippery.

Hike down the cliffs to Hideaways Beach, one of the best secluded Kauai snorkeling beaches near Princeville

But the payoff is sweet for those who hike down: an almost picture-perfect, powdery golden sand beach, protected by a large reef, making the ocean waters great for snorkeling and swimming!

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach is primarily for the experienced snorkeler and good swimmer. The water along the reef is a bit deep and rough.

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach, one of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai for experienced, adventurous snorkelers

Hideaways Beach has no facilities or lifeguards, and limited parking on Ka Haku Road near the trailhead.

I would strongly recommend against swimming or snorkeling on Hideaways Beach in winter (as with other Kauai North Shore beaches), when you typically have high surf conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, Princeville Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: None Food Nearby: Princeville has great food options Parking: At the trailhead, small parking lot or 1 Hotel paid parking Directions: Ka Haku Road to Hideaways Beach Parking or 1 Hotel

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the East Coast

5. lydgate beach park.

Visiting Kauai in winter and looking to snorkel? You probably know by now that Kauai North Shore beaches are to be avoided, due to the rough waves and high surf conditions.

Luckily, Lydgate Beach Park is one of the few year-round snorkeling destinations along the East Side of Kauai , and one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beach spots!

Lydgate Beach Park, one of the most popular Kauai snorkeling beaches on the East Side, where you can snorkel safely year round

Lydgate Beach is one the best swimming beaches in Kauai , with the large ocean waves and currents protected by a lava rock wall.

Our kids loved the small pool that was behind a man-made rock wall, probably one of the safest swimming and snorkeling locations on Kauai !

Depths can vary from 3 feet to 8 feet depending on the tides, so we used flotation devices for our younger kids. There are handy ladders on the rock wall to enter the water.

Keiki pool or kids pool on the Lydgate Beach Park, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for kids and beginners

I was pleasantly surprised at how many different species of tropical fish had sneaked in through the barriers, when I went in snorkeling with the kids in the smaller pool.

While the marine life and tropical fish is not as extensive as in some of the other locations, you can still expect to see hundreds of fish species here, including schools of yellow and black tang.

Best of all, there were several reasonably priced food trucks near the entrance to the park, serving delicious Hawaiian, Thai, Indian and other cuisines!

Location: East Shore of Kauai, 6 miles south of Kapa’a (next to Wailua River) Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, huge playground, bike path Food Nearby: Food trucks serving ethnic food, Coconut Marketplace nearby and many other options in Kapa’a Parking: Beach parking along Nalu Road Directions: Nalu Road off Kuhio Highway, Kapa’a

6. poipu beach.

Visiting Poipu Beach , one of the more popular Kauai beaches, is one of the best things to do in Kauai !

Two beautiful crescent-shaped bays, with a shallow sandbar separating them, along with golden, finely powdered sand, and calm, clear and warm waters year-round make Poipu Beach one of the best beaches on Kauai !

Spectacular Poipu Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for families with kids and beginners

You have a lifeguard, restrooms and showers, excellent beach facilities for families with kids. We used to take our kids to Poipu Beach all the time when we stayed in the nearby resort area, and they loved snorkeling here!

The bays are protected by a barrier reef, providing a safe snorkeling and swimming environment.

You can see hundreds of different kinds of colorful, tropical fish here, big and small!

We even saw a Hawaiian monk seal lazing in the sand, soaking in the sun! Keep your distance, though, they are endangered and protected.

best snorkeling tour kauai

The smaller bay is closer to the parking lot and playground, and being shallow, more suitable for kids and beginners.

The bigger bay is better for experienced snorkelers, and can be close to 12 feet deep in some areas (depending on the tide), with bigger fish and the occasional green sea turtle.

Food trucks serving poke bowls, tacos, burgers and curry are available nearby.

Location: South Shore of Kauai, Koloa Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, playground Food Nearby: Food trucks at the entrance Parking: Poipu Beach Park parking lot Directions: Poipu Beach Park, Koloa

7. Salt Pond Beach Park

Sa lt Pond Beach Park , well away from nearby towns, is a remote, secluded beach along the southwestern shore of Kauai.

Watching the sunset here is one of the best things to do near Poipu !

Salt Pond Beach Park, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the Southwestern side, with soft powdered sand and crystal clear waters

Salt Pond Beach is one of my favorite Kauai south shore beaches for snorkeling, and I frequent this beach when I just want to relax and have a quiet day with the family.

One of the primary attractions here are the salt ponds, built by the natives to make salt for cooking and medicine.

But Salt Pond Beach is an excellent snorkeling location as well, with a beautiful sandy beach and crescent-shaped bays protected by an underwater fringing reef.

Salt Pond Beach is broken into three main pools: a big one in the middle, deeper and meant for good swimmers, a right one called the baby or keiki pond for smaller kids, and a left one, popular for snorkeling.

Salt Pond Beach is a very popular haunt with the locals, and you can expect to see a large variety of tropical fish in its three pools.

Salt Pond Beach Park, one of the favorite Kauai snorkeling beaches of locals

In winter, you can often see pods of migrating humpback whales from Salt Pond Beach!

Location: Kauai’s Southwestern Shore, near Eleele, on the way to Waimea Canyon State Park Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, shaded huts Food Nearby: Food trucks or head to Hanapepe, nearest town, for food options Parking: Beach parking lot Directions: Salt Pond Road, Eleele (take Lele Road off Highway 50)

Snorkeling and Water Activities Gear Checklist

Though you can rent snorkeling gear or use the ones that come with tours, we invested in our own gear, mainly due to Covid-19 (why take the risk?).

  • Snorkeling Gear Set : We love our Cressi Light Weight Premium Travel Snorkel Set for All Family , compact and easy to pack, great fitting, and very clear underwater. The Zenoplige Mask Fins Snorkel Set is a great budget option.
  • Sunscreen : Hawaii’s sun can be harsh. Avoid sunburn with sunscreen compliant with Hawaii’s 104 Reef Act. The Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray , moisturizing with Vitamin E, is our go-to when we travel to Hawaii. Apply liberally and regularly!
  • Underwater Camera : Want to capture Hawaii’s incredible underwater seascape and marine life? Your best budget option is the Fujifilm QuickSnap Waterproof Disposable Camera , reasonably cheap with good underwater photos! If you want high-end photos and video, you must invest in the premium GoPro HERO12 – Waterproof Action Camera , (waterproof to 33 feet)!
  • Inflatable Life Jackets : If you’re planning paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports, and prefer your own life jacket, consider one of these two US Coast Guard approved options: the Onyx M-16 Series Belt Back Manual Inflatable Life Jacket or the Onyx A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket .
  • Water Shoes : Some of Hawaii’s beaches have sharp lava rocks or coral reefs, good water shoes will protect your feet (but please do not walk on the reef!). We use the Merrell Hydro Moc rubber shoes ( men’s , women’s ), great for slippery rocks. If you prefer sandals, we recommend the Keen Newport H2 Closed Toe Water Sandals ( men’s , women’s ).
  • Waterproof Waist Pack : Keep your rental car keys, cards, and phone dry and safe while you swim or snorkel with a dry bag. We love this 2-pack AiRun Tech Pouch with waist strap . The transparent one is touch-screen friendly!

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

You will need to rent snorkeling equipment from one of the bigger towns, most beaches won’t have rental stores nearby.

You will need a mask that fits well, a snorkel with a mouthpiece, and, optionally, feet fins, flotation devices and a wetsuit (or a rash guard).

You should restrict snorkeling on Kauai’s North Shore to summer, since during winter, the waves are rough, and you have high surf conditions. Check beach conditions here .

Lydgate Beach Park ponds at sunrise, clear calm waters early morning

Best time of day to snorkel is usually mornings, when the water is calm and clear, and underwater visibility is high. Beaches tend to be less crowded in the morning as well!

Pick a location appropriate for your snorkeling ability. If you are a beginner, prefer beaches with lifeguards where you can ask them for the best spots to snorkel.

Poipu Beach with lifeguards, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches offering locations for snorkelers of different abilities

If you are planning a snorkeling boat tour, make reservations early, since Kauai is a popular destination!

Wear reef-safe sunscreen, and use a rash guard or wetsuit to protect your skin from sunburn.

Don’t forget towels and a change of dry clothes!

Take a waterproof camera to capture some of the amazing marine life you will see underwater.

Make sure you have lots of water and snacks, many of the beaches have no food store or restaurants close by.

Finally, make sure you are respectful of the reef and marine life! Don’t step on or break corals. Don’t touch, feed or harass the marine life.

Preserve the coral reefs on Kauai snorkeling beaches!

Some of the species you may encounter like the Hawaiian green sea turtle and the Hawaiian monk seal are endangered and protected by laws requiring you to maintain a respectable distance!

Ocean Safety Tips

Hawaii’s beaches are beautiful, but ocean activities can be dangerous. Ocean conditions are dynamic and can change without warning.

Here are some tips to enjoy the ocean and beaches safely:

  • ALWAYS heed posted warning signs.
  • Check conditions just before you arrive at your chosen beach, and watch conditions at the beach for a bit before you decide to enter the water.
  • Swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask the lifeguard for advice before you enter the water.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, whether you are standing at the shore or on a cliff above. If you see wet rocks or sand, it means the water has been here recently.
  • Know your limitations, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer. If in doubt, do not go out.
  • If you choose to enter the water, go with a partner or in a group.
  • Know that alcohol can impair judgment and motor skills in the water.
  • Keep children close and always keep your eyes on what they are doing in the water.
  • Watch for sharp coral or rocks or sea urchins.
  • Check advisories regarding water quality at various beaches here .

Yelp

Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate “rain forests of the sea,” one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.

All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include:

Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners. Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR. High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear. Lunch and drinks

Beginning Snorkelers Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time. For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.

Snorkel Gear Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures. Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!) “Dry” easy purge snorkels. Comfortable fins in all sizes. Snorkel vests - for buoyancy. Non-fog spray

Kauai Snorkel Tips Always Use Properly Fitting Snorkel Gear Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety. Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.

Safety First If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips: When in doubt, don't go out. Always snorkel with a buddy. Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far. For beginners, going with an experienced snorkeler is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Snorkel? Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.

What Do I Need To Bring? You will need a swimsuit. The waters of Hawaii are warm, so a wetsuit is not required. Sun protection such as waterproof sunscreen or a shirt are also necessary as the sun's rays are more intense when they reflect off of the water. If you are on one of our tours, that's all you will need. If you are snorkeling on your own you will need snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel and fins. Comfortable, well fitting equipment is very important. Proper use is key to fully enjoying your snorkeling experience.

Are there Safety Concerns? If you are snorkeling with Capt Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

Best Kauai Snorkeling Tours for the Na Pali Coast

Looking for an unforgettable Kauai adventure but short on time? Combine two of the best things to do on the island: snorkel in Kauai’s vibrant coral reefs while soaking in breathtaking views of the stunning Na Pali coast !

The rugged Na Pali coast , adorned with secluded beaches, emerald-green lush valleys, and towering cliffs, is typically accessible only by boat (unless you’re up for an epic hike along the famed Kalalau Trail). Luckily, there are several tour options to choose from.

For an exhilarating and adventurous twist, consider zodiac raft tours . These can take you to hidden sea caves, coastal waterfalls, and remote beaches. Be prepared for a physically demanding but thrilling ride.

On our first Kauai trip, we opted for this raft adventure , the Na Pali 1/2 Day Snorkel tour , and it was fantastic. The nimble raft zigzagged along the stunning coast, exploring sea caves and chasing waterfalls.

We made a pitstop to snorkel at Nu’alolo Kai , home to coral reefs that are simply to die for!

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the North Shore

Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the North Shore

1. Ke’e Beach (Haena State Park)

Ke’e Beach is hands down one of my favorite Kauai snorkeling beaches , especially during the summer – and it’s not just about snorkeling, it’s also the prettiest beach around!

Nestled in Haena State Park, Ke’e Beach offers more than just underwater wonders. You can seamlessly blend snorkeling with activities like hiking a part of the iconic Kalalau Trail along the breathtaking Na Pali coastline and exploring the restored taro fields. It’s a whole day of family fun!

This North Shore gem is a small, gorgeous spot adorned with coconut palm trees, treating you to stunning views of the Na Pali cliffs. The coral reef here is extensive, and the water is clear and warm during summer, creating the perfect conditions for snorkeling . Families with kids will love the added perks of restrooms, showers, and vigilant lifeguards.

For the beginners, start your snorkeling adventure in the lagoon protected by the reef. If you’re a strong swimmer or an experienced snorkeler, head to the right side of the beach where rocks jut out – you might encounter more fish, coral, and perhaps a Hawaiian green sea turtle or two!

Keep in mind, winter isn’t the best time for a dip at Ke’e Beach due to high surf conditions. And don’t miss the breathtaking sunset if you can stay till late evening!

Location: Haena State Park, North Shore of Kauai

Lifeguard: Yes

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers

Food Nearby: No shops or restaurants close by

Parking: Ke’e Beach Parking Lot, reservations needed, shuttle recommended

2. Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach, or Makua Beach, is a hidden gem among the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore. Just 5 miles west of Hanalei on the Kuhio Highway, this beach is a tropical paradise waiting to be explored.

While you’ll encounter colorful tropical fish in every location mentioned, Tunnels Beach stands out with its unique coral reef featuring lava tubes, tunnels, underwater caves, and other fascinating formations – a true snorkeler’s playground.

Snorkelers of various skill levels can enjoy the experience, but beginners should stick to the safer inner reef. Tunnels Beach offers diverse zones and habitats, from shallow lagoons to deep drop-offs.

For a more adventurous swim, head to the left side where rocks mark the entrance to the reef. Here, you’ll discover an array of tropical fish, including jacks, arc-eye hawkfish, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of Hawaiian monk seals.

This beach is situated in a residential area and lacks facilities, including limited parking. It’s advisable to park at the nearby Haena Beach Park, savor its amenities, and take a half-mile stroll northeast to Tunnels Beach.

Similar to Ke’e Beach, Tunnels Beach is best for summer snorkeling, as winter brings risky conditions with dangerous surf, rough waves, and strong currents.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, 5 miles west of Hanalei

Lifeguard: No

Beach Amenities: None

Food Nearby: Head to Hanalei for food options

Parking: Small lot, best option may be Haena Beach Park

Directions: Look for “Tunnels” signs around mile marker 8, access road off Kuhio Highway

3. Anini Beach

Anini Beach boasts the longest, widest coral reef along Kauai’s coastline, making it one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore. The fringing reef acts as a natural barrier, creating a safe haven for snorkeling in calm, clear waters with varying depths from shallow to deep.

This family-friendly destination provides an abundance of snorkeling spots, and you won’t need extensive planning and reservations like at Ke’e Beach. Anini Beach is equipped with various facilities, including restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shady trees, and even campsites (permits required for overnight stays).

The extensive coral reef along Anini Beach offers a rich snorkeling experience for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Beginners and kids can stick to the inner reef, where a variety of tropical fish and occasional sea turtles can be spotted.

For a more immersive adventure, strong swimmers and experienced snorkelers can explore the outer reef, where encounters with rays, eels, octopuses, and reef sharks (the smaller kind!) are possible. However, be cautious of channels where currents can be strong and unpredictable.

Anini Beach is a year-round snorkeling destination, providing a safe haven even during the winter months. Just keep in mind that, like the other North Shore beaches, winter snorkeling can be hazardous due to unpredictable conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, near Hanalei

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shade trees

Food Nearby: Head to Princeville or Kilauea for food options

Parking: Road parking

Directions: Anini Beach, Anini Road, Kilauea

4. Hideaways Beach (Pali Ke Kua Beach)

Hideaways Beach lives up to its name, tucked away and a bit of a challenge to reach, making it one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for those craving solitude and adventure.

This secluded gem is not for the faint-hearted – it’s a playground for thrill-seekers and adventure tourists. To access the beach, you’ll embark on a steep trail, sometimes aided by ropes, descending the cliffs. Be warned, it’s a tough trek, especially when the trail is wet and slippery.

But for those who brave the journey, the reward is worth it: an almost idyllic, powdery golden sand beach, sheltered by a sizable reef, creating ideal conditions for snorkeling and swimming in the ocean waters!

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach caters to the experienced snorkeler and strong swimmer. The water along the reef tends to be a bit deep and rough, adding an extra layer of excitement.

Hideaways Beach doesn’t offer facilities or lifeguards, and parking is limited on Ka Haku Road near the trailhead. A word of caution – it’s not advisable to swim or snorkel here during winter (similar to other Kauai North Shore beaches) due to high surf conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, Princeville

Food Nearby: Princeville has great food options

Parking: At the trailhead, small parking lot, or 1 Hotel paid parking

Directions: Ka Haku Road to Hideaways Beach Parking or 1 Hotel

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the East Coast

5. lydgate beach park.

 Lydgate Beach Park

Planning a winter visit to Kauai and eager to snorkel? By now, you’re likely aware that the North Shore beaches are off-limits due to rough waves and high surf conditions.

Enter Lydgate Beach Park – a shining exception, offering year-round snorkeling along the East Coast of Kauai and standing out as one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beaches !

Lydgate Beach , situated on the East Side, earns its reputation as one of the best swimming beaches in Kauai. Thanks to a protective lava rock wall, the large ocean waves and currents are tamed, creating a safe haven for water enthusiasts.

Our kids absolutely adored the small pool tucked behind a artificial rock wall – arguably one of the safest spots for swimming and snorkeling on Kauai!

Depths can vary from 3 to 8 feet depending on the tides, prompting us to use flotation devices for our younger kids. Convenient ladders on the rock wall make entering the water a breeze.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover a variety of tropical fish that had made their way into the barriers while snorkeling with the kids in the smaller pool. While the marine life might not be as extensive as some other spots, you can still anticipate encountering hundreds of fish species, including vibrant schools of yellow and black tang.

As a delightful bonus, there are several reasonably priced food trucks near the park entrance, offering delectable Hawaiian, Thai, Indian, and other cuisines!

Location: East Shore of Kauai, 6 miles south of Kapa’a (next to Wailua River)

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, huge playground, bike path

Food Nearby: Food trucks serving ethnic food, Coconut Marketplace nearby, and many other options in Kapa’a

Parking: Beach parking along Nalu Road

6. Poipu Beach

A visit to Poipu Beach, one of the most beloved Kauai beaches , is an absolute must-do in Kauai!

Picture two stunning crescent-shaped bays, separated by a shallow sandbar, adorned with golden, finely powdered sand, and offering calm, clear, and warm waters year-round – that’s Poipu Beach, ranking high among the best beaches on Kauai!

The spectacular Poipu Beach, a haven for families with kids and beginners in snorkeling

You’ll find a lifeguard, restrooms, and showers, providing excellent beach facilities for families with kids. During our stays in the nearby resort area, we frequented Poipu Beach with our kids, who absolutely loved the snorkeling experience here!

The bays benefit from the protection of a barrier reef, creating a safe haven for both snorkeling and swimming.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the sight of hundreds of colorful, tropical fish – both big and small!

On one occasion, we even spotted a Hawaiian monk seal leisurely basking in the sun on the sand! It’s important to keep a respectful distance, as these seals are endangered and protected.

The smaller bay, conveniently located near the parking lot and playground, is shallow and more suitable for kids and beginners.

For experienced snorkelers, the bigger bay, reaching depths of close to 12 feet in certain areas (depending on the tide), offers encounters with larger fish and the occasional green sea turtle.

Don’t worry about packing a lunch – there are food trucks nearby serving a variety of delights from poke bowls and tacos to burgers and curry.

Location: South Shore of Kauai, Koloa

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, playground

7. Salt Pond Beach Park

 Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park

T he Salt Pond Beach Park , nestled along the southwestern shore of Kauai, far from the hustle of nearby towns, stands as a remote and secluded gem. Catching the sunset here is undeniably one of the best activities near Poipu!

Salt Pond Beach, adorned with soft powdered sand and crystal clear waters, is among the finest Kauai snorkeling beaches on the southwestern side. It’s a personal favorite of mine, a go-to spot when I crave a tranquil day with the family.

One of the unique draws is the salt ponds, crafted by the natives for salt production used in cooking and medicine.

Beyond its cultural significance, Salt Pond Beach is an exceptional snorkeling location , boasting a beautiful sandy beach and crescent-shaped bays sheltered by an underwater fringing reef.

The beach is divided into three main pools: a sizable central one, deeper and suitable for proficient swimmers; a right-side pool named the baby or keiki pond catering to smaller kids; and a left-side pool, renowned for its snorkeling opportunities.

A popular choice among locals, Salt Pond Beach offers a diverse array of tropical fish in its three pools.

During winter, lucky visitors may witness pods of migrating humpback whales from the shores of Salt Pond Beach !

Location: Kauai’s Southwestern Shore, near Eleele, on the way to Waimea Canyon State Park

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, shaded huts

Food Nearby: Food trucks or head to Hanapepe, the nearest town, for food options

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

To make the most of your snorkeling adventure in Kauai, here are some essential tips:

1. Rent Equipment in Bigger Towns: Most beaches lack nearby rental stores, so plan to rent your snorkeling gear in larger towns.

2. Required Gear: Ensure you have a well-fitting mask, a snorkel with a mouthpiece, and optionally, fins, flotation devices, and a wetsuit or rash guard.

3. Timing Matters: Snorkel on Kauai’s North Shore in summer when the waves are calmer. Winter brings rough waves and high surf conditions.

4. Best Time of Day: Mornings are ideal for snorkeling – calm waters, clear visibility, and fewer crowds.

5. Choose Suitable Locations: Select beaches based on your snorkeling skill level. Lifeguarded beaches are excellent for beginners.

6. Early Reservations: If planning a snorkeling boat tour, book early due to Kauai’s popularity.

7. Sun Protection: Use reef-safe sunscreen and consider a rash guard or wetsuit to prevent sunburn.

8. Pack Essentials: Don’t forget towels, a change of clothes, a waterproof camera, water, and snacks. Many beaches lack nearby food options.

9. Respect Marine Life: Be considerate of the reef and marine life. Avoid stepping on or breaking corals. Don’t touch, feed, or harass marine creatures.

10. Follow Regulations: Endangered species like the Hawaiian green sea turtle and the Hawaiian monk seal require maintaining a respectful distance to comply with protective laws.

Make your Kauai snorkeling experience not only enjoyable but also environmentally conscious!

Kauai Snorkeling Safety

Please take safety into consideration before snorkeling, especially if venturing out of protected areas where stronger currents can overpower a swimmer. A general rule of thumb to follow before getting in the ocean is to find a comfortable place in the shade and observe the water for 20 minutes before entering. It is important to observe the current and identify any obstacles such as rocks. Being aware of your surroundings will help keep your snorkeling adventure as safe as it is fun.

Also, please be mindful of the coral reef, as it is a very delicate living organism. Make sure not to step or walk on the reef, and do not touch the coral or any of its inhabitants; for the reef's health, as well as for your own safety. You'll also want to take a reef safe sunscreen, as traditional sunscreens damage the reefs.

Snorkeling For Beginners

Lydgate park, keiki pond.

The keiki (children's) pond at Lydgate Park is a great place to try snorkeling for the first time.  This water is protected year round from the surf by a man-made rock wall, the pond gets as deep as 10' in places, and there are numerous fish swimming near the outer rocks. There is no coral here and the beach is popular with families. It is a great place to put on the mask, fins, and snorkel for the first time without having to worry about ocean currents or crashing waves.

Poipu Beach Park

If you are on the South Side there is no need to travel far to snorkel for the first time.  As long as there is not a large south swell, Poipu Beach Park is a good beginner spot. The snorkeling area at Poipu Beach is small, as most of the area has a sand bottom. However, just to the right of the sand is a rocky area with a little coral, some fish, and usually several people! If you are lucky, you'll spot a Hawaiian monk seal lying on the beach.

Intermediate and Advanced Snorkeling

Nualolo kai.

The reef at Nualolo Kai is one of the best snorkeling locations to visit on Kauai. You can expect to see lots of fish and very healthy coral. In the morning, before the wind picks up, the visibility at Nualolo Kai is at its best. Nualolo Kai is on the Na Pali Coast and is only accessible by boat and when conditions allow; generally between the months of April and September.  Not all tour boats stop at Nualolo Kai, so be sure you book with a company who does.

Kee Beach , at the end of the road on the North Shore, can be excellent for snorkeling when the surf conditions permit. It is most easily accessible during the summer months. Be aware of the strong rip current that can exist on the left side of the reef where it opens up to the ocean. Kee has a barrier reef with plenty of marine life- it's a comfortable intermediate snorkeling location. Please be mindful to not step on the reef here.

The area outside the reef at Kee is for experts only, but the marine life is abundant. As a result, it's common to see locals spear fishing in this area. Do not go outside the reef unless you are very experienced swimming in the ocean and have a clear plan for how to get back in. The rip current may help you get out through a shallow crack in the reef; however, it is often not easy to get back because the current is pushing against you. There have been sightings of turtles, Hawaiian monk seals, and even an occasional white-tipped reef shark here.

Tunnels (Makua) Beach

Tunnels is a deceptively large horseshoe-shaped snorkeling area.  The outer reef, which has excellent coral formations and lots of marine life, is for advanced snorkelers only, as it is exposed to strong ocean currents. The best entry point is the water near the point (far right side of the reef when looking out from shore). You can then swim out to the inside portion of the outer reef. Be aware that the current will be pushing you back towards Haena Beach Park. Follow the curve along the outer reef; there are varying depths here from 3'-40'. When you get in the shallows, the current can be very strong.  As you approach the far left side of the reef (when looking from shore), head directly to shore and back to the beach (you will be crossing a channel).  Under no circumstances should you follow the reef out and away from shore – the exit current can be very strong around the left corner of the reef.

For beginners, there is a protected shallow area with small caves (or tunnels) on the inner reef which is usually a safe place to get in the water when the surf isn't big. It is on the left side of the beach closest to Haena Beach Park (where you come back in from the outer reef advanced snorkel).

Like the rest of the North Shore of Kauai, large north swell is common in the winter. In such conditions, even strong swimmers will not be able to snorkel at Tunnels. During that time of year, we suggest you head to Koloa Landing or Lawai Beach on the South Side.

Tunnels Beach has very limited parking because it is a popular snorkeling area. If it is overcrowded, there is more parking at Haena Beach Park. It is a beautiful (albeit long) walk from there to the tunnels.

Hideaways Beach

In order to access this beach, you have to follow a steep trail from just in front of the St Regis Resort.  Hideaways ' turquoise blue water is perfect for snorkeling when the conditions are good. The reef here is shallow with lots of pockets or deep grooves to explore and an abundance of fish. It's not necessary to swim very far out over the shallow reef; the snorkeling isn't any better, and you will be exposing yourself to more hazardous ocean conditions. During high swell, visibility is impaired and it may not be safe to enter the water.

Koloa Landing

If you are on the south side, Koloa Landing is best for snorkelers who are excellent swimmers with more advanced skills.  This is a popular diving location, but there is a fairly long swim across a sandy area. There is limited sea life in this area, but you will see plenty when you get to where the snorkeling is good (either side of the bay). Koloa landing is also exposed to the open ocean, so don’t go here when there is a large south swell (usually during the summer).

There is no beach at Koloa landing; you enter the water from a boat ramp. If there has recently been heavy rain, do not snorkel at Koloa landing. There is a small stream near the boat ramp- do not snorkel near it as the stream clouds visibility and may carry run off from the livestock farming operations that are upstream.

Lawai Beach

Lawai Beach is a reliable snorkeling area protected by a barrier reef that hosts abundant numbers of fish. If you want to try out snorkeling, we highly recommend taking a snorkel tour. After you have gone with a guide, you'll have learned the basics and will be more comfortable snorkeling independently. Note that visibility gets better (and the coral much healthier) the farther out towards the reef you go, but don’t venture outside the reef.

Lawai Beach can be crowded because it is one of the best snorkeling spots on Kauai.   It is particularly important to be aware of the currents at Lawai Beach in high wind or south swell. It is also very easy to access with ample street side parking available.  There is a small sand beach on the left side of the bay that disappears at high tide, and the lawn in front of the beach house restaurant which borders the east side of the bay is also a nice place to relax.

If you are a confident swimmer and have been snorkeling a couple of times before, Lawai Beach is an excellent choice.

No matter where you choose to snorkel on Kauai, be safe; be respectful of the marine life whose home you are visiting; and, of course, have fun!

Best Snorkeling Kauai – 10 Beautiful Beaches You’ll Love

Posted on Published: November 10, 2020  - Last updated: January 5, 2024

Hawaii is home to amazing beaches, picturesque mountain cliffs and quite possibly the bluest water you’ll ever see. Yet to explore beneath the water is a whole new adventure! Here’s your guide to the best snorkeling Kauai has to offer.

This post may contain affiliate links. For more info, see my  disclosures .

If you’re in search of sea turtles, beautiful coral reefs or snorkeling with a view, this guide breaks down the best snorkeling tours and the Kauai snorkeling beaches you can’t miss.

So whether you’re a beginner snorkeler or have experienced phenomenal snorkeling in the past, this guide has everything you’ll need to plan your Kauai snorkeling adventures.

Snorkeling Kauai – tour vs. beach

snorkeling beaches kauai

Kauai has an incredibly robust underwater ecosystem that begs to be explored. And taking a snorkeling tour or hitting one of Kauai’s gorgeous beaches are both really good options.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding between a tour or just hitting a beach:

Convenience

Let’s chat about each real quick…

Snorkeling equipment

With a Kauai snorkeling tour , all the gear is there and ready for you. They’ll size you for everything you’ll need for your underwater adventure. Plus the tour company will haul it around for you!

If you decide to opt out of the tour and hit a beach (or several) during your trip to Hawaii, you’ll need to bring snorkeling gear to the islands with you or rent gear from a local shop on the island.

kauai snorkeling tips

Renting gear can be relatively inexpensive if you just go once or twice, but if you want to hit many of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai, it can really add up.

My husband and I always travel with snorkeling gear. Having snorkeled places like Belize and Turks and Caicos , it’s just one of those things we expect to pack when hitting a tropical destination.

If you love to travel, it’s a great idea to buy snorkeling equipment now for your Kauai trip and future vacations. Here’s the snorkeling gear I recommend from Amazon.

Well, it’s probably way more convenient to take a snorkeling tour in Kauai than lugging around snorkeling gear. Especially if you’re just planning to snorkel once.

However if you’re staying near an amazing beach that’s perfect for underwater sightseeing, then perhaps packing some snorkel gear for your trip is the right fit.

Also consider your group size – it may be more convenient for large groups or even for solo traveling to Hawaii to take an organized tour.

snorkeling with sea turtles kauai

Well you can bet that taking a snorkeling tour will be far more expensive than buying your own snorkeling gear before you go. But also consider how expensive your checked bags are! Because if you’re packing face masks and fins, your luggage fills up fast.

These extra perks of taking a Kauai snorkeling tour may be worth the price:

  • Many snorkeling tours on Kauai include lunch, snacks or drinks
  • You could get incredible island views from the boat that you just can’t get from the beach
  • Option to purchase beautiful snorkeling photos of yourself and your group with cameras actually designed to take photos underwater

Snorkeling tours Kauai

There are many options for snorkeling tours in Kauai! And with a knowledgeable guide to lead your tour, they’ll steer you in the right direction to make sure you see some cool underwater sights!

From shorter, 2-hour snorkeling tours on the south shore of Kauai, to a day trip up the majestic NaPali Coast or even a kayaking and snorkel combination, this site has a ton of options for snorkeling tours in Kauai.

Check out the best Kauai snorkeling tours here.

Alright now that we’ve covered snorkeling options and amazing Kauai snorkeling tours, let’s get to the best beaches to snorkel!

Best snorkeling beaches in Kauai

Not all Kauai beaches are great for snorkeling so this guide goes over which beaches are best and why.

Let’s dive in!

1. Hanalei Bay snorkeling (great for families)

best snorkeling kauai aerial view of hanalei bay

Hanalei Bay is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling and even surfing. I’ve seen this beach on beautiful calm days and on high surf days, and if you can make it to this beach on a calm day, then you’re in for a great time!

I t’s a perfect spot for families because the depth of the beach is significant, so there’s lots of room for kids to play in the sand. And even though this beach is on the north shore of Kauai, which traditionally has stronger waves, the bay tends to break up the surf.

The water is relatively shallow, especially near the Hanalei Pier so it’s really a great spot to snorkel!

2. Lawai Beach

snorkeling with turtles kauai

This tiny beach located on the south shore of Kauai is perfect for watching sea turtles! It’s a rocky beach with tons of coral and the sea turtles love this cove!

This is one of the top snorkeling beaches in Kauai, because you’re almost guaranteed to see a sea turtle!

Use caution not to step on the coral as you get in and out of the water. Doing so damages the delicate coral. And NEVER touch a sea turtle. Snorkeling etiquette is important, okay?

Address: navigate to Lawai Beach Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, across the street

3. Tunnels Beach snorkeling

tunnels beach snorkeling

This is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in all of Kauai. Tunnels Beach is on the north shore, with a large reef formation next to the beach.

It’s one of those beaches you just walk right off the beach with your snorkel gear. The reef does a great job of breaking up the waves, but the currents can still be strong in this area.

Considering it’s such a popular snorkeling spot, it can be difficult to find parking . Be courteous to the locals and don’t park on private property. Walk further if you need to!

Pro tip: pack your water shoes for this beach. I recommend water shoes for many beaches in Kauai , but Tunnels Beach is especially rough.

These are the water shoes I took with me to Kauai. They’ve traveled all over the world with me and have lasted several years.

Address: 5-7652 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, HI 96714 (address is for Makua Beach, a short walk away) Restrooms and rinse off stations: no

4. Hideaway Beach

best snorkeling kauai

My favorite beach in Kauai! Hideaway Beach is a gorgeous hidden beach that requires a hike to get to it. It’s a perfect spot to spend an afternoon snorkeling, too!

The patches of coral look stunning as you hike down the steep path towards the beach below. Once out in the water, you’ll snorkel those coral spots as brightly colored fish swim about, and maybe even a glimpse of a sea turtle or two!

Hideaway Beach is a great snorkeling spot for beginners or kids, as long as the steep hike is not a problem.

snorkeling beaches kauai

Pro tip: start your snorkeling adventure during non-peak hours by getting to Hideaway Beach early ! There’s extremely limited parking and hefty fines for parking anywhere but a designated spot.

Address: navigate to Hideaway Beach, Princeville, HI 96722 Restrooms and rinse off stations: no

Kauai snorkeling tips

Okay, I just want to pause this list here to mention a few things.

Hawaii is a sacred place and if you’re going to visit this gorgeous destination, be respectful of the local culture and marine life. Here are my top tips for snorkeling Kauai.

Keep your distance from sea turtles or “honu”

snorkeling kauai hideaway beach turtle

It’s such a delight to encounter sea turtles while snorkeling! They’re so smooth underwater and interesting to watch, it almost feels magical.

Sea turtles, or honu , are significant in Hawaiian culture , providing a connection between sea, land and people. It’s critically important that people don’t touch or get too close to sea turtles as they lie on the beach or while snorkeling.

Read about honu and the cultural significance here . Learn more about Hawaii’s sea turtle recommendations here .

Do not step on coral reefs

Coral reefs are extremely fragile and should be protected. As visitors, it’s important that you look with your eyes only, and not touch or stand on the coral.

shark while snorkeling hawaii

Oils from fingers can damage or even kill an entire colony of coral. And standing up on it kills living coral polyps that are the foundation of the reef structure.

So don’t touch and use care when getting in and out of the water or while adjusting your snorkel mask.

Use reef-safe sunblock

Traditional sunblock is toxic to marine life. Be sure to only use reef-safe sunscreen while you’re in Kauai, or any other beach destination for that matter.

Here’s my favorite sunblock on Amazon , I’ve used it on several beachy getaways and it even smells delightful. Save the marine life and buy the right sunblock now.

Best snorkeling Kauai – list continued

5. anini beach kauai.

anini beach kauai

Can I just say this beach might be perfect for snorkeling? On a list of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai, Anini Beach is a highlight for sure!

Anini Beach is one of the largest beaches on Kauai and spans an area with a huge coral reef. It has extremely shallow water and the surf is mild… even non-existent at times.

Anini Beach is always a nice break from the strong waves of other popular snorkeling beaches on the island. It’s a perfect snorkeling spot for kids, beginners, or anyone who loves snorkeling!

This is one of those snorkeling beaches that can be difficult to get in and out of the water without standing on coral, so just be cautious not to damage the coral reef.

Address: navigate to Anini Beach, Kalihiwai, HI 96754 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, multiple

6. Snorkeling Kauai at Kiahuna Beach

overlooking kiahuna beach

Located on the south shore of Kauai, this beach is an active one. I’ve regularly seen snorkelers, surfers and swimmers…even all at once!

Kauai snorkeling beaches are plentiful on the south side of the island due to the calmer nature of the ocean compared to the north shore. I like snorkeling at Kiahuna Beach, because it’s a large cove so there’s usually a lot of space for everyone to enjoy.

Also, I’ve spotted a few sea turtles at this cove over the years. 🙂

Kiahuna beach for snorkeling kauai

Bonus: this area is awesome for sunsets! I’ve spent many nights sitting with my toes in the sand while the sun lights up the sky. If you like palm trees in your sunset, you’ll get the perfect photo at the Kiahuna Plantation or just beyond the beach at the Sheraton Kauai Resort.

Address: navigate to Kiahuna Beach, Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes (restrooms are a ways off the beach though)

7. NaPali Coast snorkeling

snorkeling tour kauai napali coast

Okay so this snorkeling spot can only be done via snorkeling tour . But to see the spectacular views of the NaPali coast via boat is a snorkeling adventure you’ll never forget!

Side note: The first time I saw the NaPali Coast was via helicopter and it was mind-blowing! I’ve experienced it’s beauty by hiking the Kalalau Trail and let me tell ya, you gotta see this coast here during your trip to Kauai!

The best time to do a snorkeling tour on the NaPali Coast is during summer, as the ocean tends to be more calm. The waves and surf can get very rough during the winter months, so you’ll more likely set sail in the summer, although tours are offered all year long.

Pro tip: check out the cancellation and reschedule policy by your snorkeling tour provider. The weather is not always favorable for boating to the coast.

Book your NaPali Coast snorkeling tour here.

NaPali Coast snorkeling is a bucket list experience that will stick with you for a lifetime!

8. Lydgate Beach Park

lydgate beach park

Lydgate Beach Park on east Kauai is a unique beach, and a perfect spot to learn how to snorkel. The beach itself sits near the Wailua River, which dumps driftwood out of the river and it settles on the beach. So it’s a fun spot to watch a sunrise and for kids to explore.

But back to the snorkeling! The waves on Kauai can be relentless, so back in the 1960’s two large rock-enclosed pools were created with underwater rock walls. That prevents strong currents from taking over your snorkeling activity.

It’s fun to see fish while snorkeling in the pool, as they’ll regularly make their way through the holes in the rock wall. It’s a great spot for beginners or young snorkelers.

Bonus: Lydgate Beach Park has a ton of other family-friendly features too, such as a large playground, picnic tables and even a pavilion.

Address: Leho Dr, Lihue, HI 96766 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, multiple

9. Kauai Snorkeling on the North Shore: Ke’e Beach

kee beach Kauai Hawaii

As far north as you can get via car on Kauai is Ke’e Beach in Ha’ena State Park. Snorkeling is only recommended at Ke’e Beach on calm water days, as the currents on the north shore are very strong. Generally, summer is the best time to snorkel at Ke’e Beach.

The state park requires a reservation as it’s home of the famous Kalalau Trail, so there’s a bit of planning involved and a small fee.

Make state park reservations here . And if you’re interested in hiking one of the most famous trails in the world, check out the Kalalau Trail details, too!

10. Poipu Beach snorkeling

monk seal on poipu beach

Alright the last on this list of best snorkeling beaches in Kauai is the popular Poipu Beach. Named one of the world’s best beaches by the Travel Channel , Poipu Beach cannot be missed on a trip to Kauai.

There’s plenty of sunshine and marine life at Poipu Beach, making for excellent snorkeling! I’ve seen sea turtles, seals and plenty of colorful fish. Just a reminder to keep a far distance from all sea life – in the water or on the beach!

The beach is large and the has great amenities, including a park for kids, picnic tables, restrooms and rinse-off stations. After a day of snorkeling and beaching, grab a bite to eat at one of Kauai’s best restaurants . The area has plenty of places nearby!

Address: navigate to Poipu Beach, Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes

Kelly, Koa and Captain Chad took great care of us. Such a fun trip. Captain Chad told us a lot of history and stopped the  boat to show us landmarks. Kelly and Koi made sure we had plenty to drink and we had a great supper buffet. At sunset they stopped the boat for pictures and Champaign. Best boat ride!  Would do it again. Great job.

We went on the 7 hour tour with captain Chad and crew, it was the absolute best. All of the crew was fantastic. Each crew member came by and talked to every single person on the boat. They waited on us and made sure everyone had a great time. We have done several of these tours in different parts of the world and we can honestly say this was by far our favorite. We even got to go under a waterfall. Thank you so much Captain Chad, Jeff, Kai, and Cori,  you were all the best!!

Captain Joe and his crew did an excellent job of entertaining us while on the snorkeling cruise. He pointed out a pod of spinner dolphins and a few sea turtles. Had an exceptional sunset that evening. It was a great trip! Definitely recommend.

Super friendly staff. Our captain was awesome and the crew was great too. Super nice people and they definitely do make the trip so much more enjoyable. The crew is constantly interacting with the tourists. They tell stories of the areas that you are visiting and offer to take pictures constantly. Overall a very very nice experience.

Captain Cole, Big Rob and Luke were phenomenal hosts! My husband and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and Big Rob made sure we having a blast! I definitely recommend this cruise and crew!!!

Simply spectacular! I’ve been on the Sunset Dinner Cruise 3 times and I am never disappointed. Beautiful views, good food and drink and the crew is amazing!! Capt. Cole, Elia & Rob – you all did a fantastic job! We had a wonderful time and will see you again next year. Staff at the office are always friendly and very helpful. Highly recommend!!!!

Very organized and all staff very courteous and ready to take care of every need. Staff encourage safety at all times but bring much fun to the trip. Highly recommended! So much fun! Food simple but delicious!

This is an amazing boat tour. Saw dolphins and even a whale! Great food, drinks, and views. But this experience was made by the crew – Nicole and Kai. They gave my friends and me an unforgettable experience. I would recommend them the next time I go. Great at entertaining, taking photos, and keeping your drinks filled! Thanks for a great time Nicole and Kai!

What an incredible experience! Seeing the napali coast from the catamaran was an experience I will not forgot. We started by seeing amazing dolphins. Stopped at our snorkel spot. Snorkeled with a monk seal and turtles. Hopped on to enjoy breakfast. Then cruised the coastline. More dolphins and some awesome facts and history from Captain Chris (who was FANTASTIC). The crew was incredibly helpful, willing to take your picture, get you a drink if needed. Jake the first mate also gave us some awesome hikes to do for our remainder of our time on the island. Finished with a great lunch. An experience I won’t forget and would recommend to anyone traveling to Kauai.

We did the morning tour of the napali coast. When they say dolphins guaranteed they mean it! The crew was super helpful and friendly and the food and drink were top notch. A big thank you to Capt. Joe for giving us all the interesting history of the various sites we visited along the way.

Best boat tour EVER! Captain Cole, Ruby–who surprised us with a lovely Hula- and always smiling Rob were fantastic caring for the entire crew–some of whom were having a rough time with the “adventurous” waves. The rest of had a blast, waves were fun, views astounding and the food and drink abundant and great . Even before setting out we saw sea turtles, but once out of dock we saw several dolphins who raced along with us and tiny flying fish called sea robins.. SO COOL! Coming back to Kauai next year just for this trip. Mahalo!

We did the Na Pali Sunset Dinner Cruise and even though it was very rainy and we didn’t see much of the coast, the trip was great. The staff, Capt. Roy, Nicole & Stacy worked their butts off and did an excellent job. Got to see some spinner dolphins right next to the boat! The food was delicious and the libations were plentiful. We finished off with a beautiful sunset. Top notch company and the souvenir store had very reasonable prices…

We are Grandparents – in our 70’s. We were well taken care of by the crew. Even went snorkeling for the first time, coming from land locked Colorado. Would do again without hesitation. The highlight of our visit to Kauai.

We had a blast with Captain Dave and Dane on the zodiac tour with snorkeling. Dave went way up the napali coast to a great snorkel spot and he took us into a ton of great caves, giving us time to take pictures and ogle the majestic coastline. Would definitely do again, especially the zodiac rafts which allowed us to get up close and personal with nature.

We enjoyed a spectacular evening cruise on the Na Pali coast with Captain Chris and his hard working crew. Crew members were delightful to be around and provided helpful suggestions for additional vacation activities.

Big Rob and Little Rob were so kind and helpful!! I got sick on the boat (my fault, I didn’t take my medication). The two Robs checked on me constantly, they kept bringing me water and words of encouragement!  I would go again (with medication) because of the caring staff!!

We learned some history of the beautiful Napali Coast, experienced Kauai in a very unique and wonderful way. This excursion was worth every penny

Captain Chris and the crew were very professional and friendly. Safety was paramount but they always had your interests at heart. Spectacular views, good commentary (jokes aside) and good company. The food was reasonable. Overall, a great experience.

Yes I would totally recommend anyone try this. The captain was friendly, informative & boy can he sing! Kelly & Joff were also amazing, friendly & helpful. I’d take the sunset cruise again

The 5 Best Destinations To Snorkel In Kauai, According To Visitors

snorkeling in Kauai

As the Hawaiian island for those who like rugged, sporty, and stunning outdoor adventures, Kauai's ravishing coastline abounds with gorgeous tropical hiking trails, swimmable waterfalls, caves, and cliffs galore to explore. It also happens to feature some of the top places for snorkeling in the Hawaiian Islands , some of which you can only learn of by virtual word-of-mouth in online forums.

We've done the research to uncover the current best. Some are perfect for beginners, while others are better for experts. Some shine in summer, others in winter. You can access most directly from the beach, so you don't even need to book a tour on a snorkel boat, making it easy to combine a morning of communing with the undersea world with an afternoon hike or windsurfing lesson.

Tripadvisor reviewers can be candidly descriptive, while on Reddit, locals often jump into the discussion, revealing tips and tricks that can make all the difference to your vacation experience. For instance, veteran Kauai Redditors advise skipping the on-island snorkel gear rentals — you can buy a set at Costco for much less if you plan on snorkeling more than once. We used accounts like these from actual visitors to put together our picks of the best snorkel spots on the Garden Island.

Poipu Beach

While you'll want to take a boat tour of the Nā Pali Coast, so stunning it doesn't even look real , regulars on Reddit say not to book a trip on a snorkel boat in Kauai. The reason? "Underwhelming" and "unimpressive" stops compared to the snorkeling you can access directly from Kauai's many beaches, such as the delights at the public Poipu Beach. Good year-round, the south shore destination has showers, restrooms, and lifeguards, making it an excellent option for beginners and kids.

A tombolo, a small island connected to the mainland by a sand spit, divides Poipu (head to the west for the best snorkeling) and protects its reef areas. The shallow, sheltered waters teem with a veritable aquarium of species. You might see exotic zebra moray eels, glowing yellowfin goatfish, showy parrot fish crunching coral with their beaks, the yellow, black, and white striped Moorish idol, and the horned bluespine unicornfish.

Tripadvisor visitors identified watching the sea turtles march up the sand to take a nap (volunteers guard them and will answer questions from curious children, too) as a favorite post-snorkel treat. If you want to beat the crowds, go upscale with a stay at the beachfront Ko'a Kea Resort, where you can walk to Poipu's snorkeling grounds from your room — you'll still arrive plenty early even after a sunrise yoga class at the resort.

Anini Beach

Anini Beach on Kauai's North Shore boasts Hawaii's longest fringe coral reef. Not only does this guarantee a riot of colorful fish, but it shelters the snorkeling grounds from the waves and currents in summer, making it one of the more protected spots (the South Shore destinations on this list are better in the wintertime) with good visibility. Visitors describe it as calm as a pond, making it a more laid-back alternative than Poipu but still ideal for small children.

Lifeguards do not watch over Anini Beach, but long, shallow sandy stretches let you wade out to the coral reef unobstructed. You can float over the reef, gazing down at the flora and fauna below — just don't make these common first-time snorkeler mistakes , like touching the coral. Look for the Hawaiian state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. The clownishly colorful reef-dweller is a loner, making it a delight to come across one (good luck pronouncing its name when bragging about the sighting later).

Snorkel in the morning before the winds disturb the peaceful waters' clarity; then, in the afternoon, try some windsurfing, as the protected lagoon makes Anini ideal for learning wind sports. For adventurous types who want to experience the island's rustic charms, you can camp at Anini for $3, making it a good destination for a budget vacation. According to reviewers on Google, you can set up your tent and camp right on the beach.

Hideaways Beach

Once upon a time, the North Shore beach known as Tunnels was Kauai's premiere summer snorkeling destination, but the most scenic parts of the fragile habitat have since closed to snorkelers, often observed standing on the coral — you wouldn't want someone standing on your head if you were a coral, would you?  However, you can still access a different, far less populated snorkel beach nearby, appropriately called Hideaways. Reach it by burning a few calories hiking down a steep hill many described as so "treacherous" that you'll need to use the ropes hung alongside to steady yourself on the 15-minute descent. But hey, if surfers can carry boards down in the winter surf season, you can get there with a snorkel in summer.

Hideaways offers "world class snorkeling" comparable to that at Tunnels, according to one Redditor . And since you plan to make the effort to hike in, go the extra mile and read up on how to snorkel safely around coral reefs  for the best experience. Your reward? "Gorgeous clear water teeming with fish, turtles, and eagle ray. Spectacular snorkeling and great view of Bali Hai from beach," wrote one Tripadvisor . The coral will greet you as you wade into the water, as you can see in the picture above.

Ke'e Beach, located inside Ha'ena State Park, requires an advance reservation for parking or a shuttle bus ride. These can be tricky to get, as you need to log onto the system at 6 a.m. 30 days before your visit to snag one, but it's worth persisting. The system launched after 2018 storms required the area to be rebuilt, with the quota reservation system designed to dial back the environmental impact of tourists. As a result, the crowd-free solitude in which you can commune with the wildlife makes the experience extra special.

Ha'ena State Park is the place to combine a hike on a section of the iconic yet dangerous Kalalau Trail with a day of snorkeling — the permits for the beach and the trailhead are one and the same. The trail's full 11 miles are a massive undertaking, but hiking the first 2 miles to the first big viewpoint is a great pursuit after a relaxing morning of snorkeling.

"This might be my favorite beach. It's tranquil, crystal clear, filled with life, and you feel like you're on the edge of the world," shared one Ke'e Beach visitor on  Tripadvisor . Look for two-toned blue and yellow damselfish, chameleon-like, color-changing goatfish, and convict fish in their jailhouse stripes. It's no wonder so many locals call Ke'e their preferred snorkel beach on the island, with some even describing it as the best snorkeling in Hawaii.

Lehua Crater

How about crowning your Kauai vacation with a day trip by boat to Hawaii's "Forbidden Island" to snorkel pristine, undisturbed reefs sheltered within the submerged, semi-circular cone of a volcano? The Lehua Crater off the shore of Ni'ihau Island, 18 miles from Kauaii, is widely considered worth leaving the beach to reach. Long identified as one of the top ten island reefs for diving and snorkeling, the crater is the only destination on this list you can't swim to, but visitors agree it's spectacular, with some of the best snorkeling you'll find anywhere in the world. "Absolutely world class ... The Lehua Crater there is amazing!" one Redditor shared.

This privately owned island has been closed to outsiders for over 150 years to preserve the culture and language of the few hundred native Hawaiians who live there. With no modern human technology and no rivers running into the sea, the waters encircled by this crescent of land reliably feature exceptional visibility, usually around 70 feet. When plankton cloud the waters, which occasionally happens, the silver lining is the feeding frenzy among the fish — just relax, tread water, and watch the colorful pageant unfold. You might see a shark, so be mindful of  the features that attract sharks to snorkelers  (the clear, calm waters here are positives). Better yet, you have a good chance of spotting a Hawaiian monk seal, as this is one of the few places they still frequent. Silver lining number two? Sighting whales and dolphins on the boat ride over and back.

Our methodology

We combed through reviews on Tripadvisor and Google and pored over threads on Reddit's r/Kauai and r/VisitingHawaii in search of insider advice on snorkeling destinations to identify undiscovered gems and rule out overrated spots. We also noted the best locations for different types of snorkelers, such as beginners and solitude-seekers. We gave special consideration to the well-informed opinions of frequent visitors and locals, as knowing the best time of year (even day) to visit Hawaii's beaches can make all the difference between a five-star experience and a dud of a trip. Given the island's tricky winds, waves, and currents, you should always look up conditions before heading out for a beach day in Kauai on a site like SafeBeachDay.com . Happy snorkeling!

Where to Go Snorkeling on Kauai

best snorkeling tour kauai

As the least developed of all the major Hawaiian islands , Kauai contains pristine water and an abundance of happy ocean life. The island’s reef-protected beaches create calm waters perfect for beginner snorkelers, while more experienced swimmers can look forward to less populated ocean spaces with vibrant, healthy coral and unique species of fish.

Don’t forget, coral is full of vibrant living organisms (even the coral itself is delicately alive), so remember to avoid stepping on, touching, or disturbing any wildlife while snorkeling. No matter your swimming ability, be sure to stay mindful of the strong ocean currents and never turn your back on the ocean.

Although the underdeveloped charm of the island might make it more difficult to access certain snorkel spots around Kauai , the extra effort will be more than worth it once you jump into the water and find your own impressive slice of snorkeling paradise.

Lawai Beach

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Lawai Beach is known for being one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, and you’ll often find snorkel lessons or tours taking place within its waters. That’s not to say there won’t be room for everyone—there’s plenty of ocean to go around here. The further you go out towards the reef at Lawai, the better the visibility gets and the more fish you’ll see, so make sure you've got your fins and some solid swimming skills!

Anini Beach

The reef along the coast of Anini Beach is one of the longest in the state, and the water can get pretty shallow (especially during low tide in the winter). For this reason, it’s a very popular snorkel spot for both beginner snorkelers wishing to stay in the water near the shore and for more advanced snorkelers wanting to swim further out near the reef. You’ll often find families at Anini enjoying themselves and taking advantage of the facilities like restrooms, showers, and picnic areas.

Poipu Beach Park

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

With the exception of the occasional large swell, the southern shore of Poipu Beach Park is a great first-snorkel spot for the beginner. The bottom of the ocean here is mostly sand, and bright, tropical fish swarm it regularly. You won’t be alone unless you get there early—it's known as one of the best beaches in America, making it understandably quite popular.

Koloa Landing

CJ Foeckler / Getty Images

On the south side of the island, Koloa Landing offers a one-of-a-kind option for intermediate to advanced snorkelers. The most unique part? There is no beach here, so instead you’ll be entering the water off of an old boat ramp. Then make your way to either side of the bay where the coral is most abundant thanks to the horseshoe-shaped reef that surrounds the ramp. Opt for some tough water shoes in addition to fins since the ramp can get pretty slippery while you’re walking out.

Lydgate Park

For children and beginner snorkelers, it doesn’t get any better than the Keiki Pond at Lydgate Beach Park in Lihue . All throughout the year, you’ll find calm waters in this area thanks to the small waves and protective man-made rock wall. And if you or someone in your group is an advanced swimmer, the water can get as deep as 10 feet, so it offers a fun challenge. For what the pond lacks in coral, it makes up in safety and convenience away from Kauai’s notoriously unpredictable surf.

Nukoli’i Beach Park

Right next to Lydgate Park, Nukoli’i Beach Park is one of those sites you’ll want to avoid in the winter months or when the surf is large (locals refer to the surf break here as “graveyards,” if that gives you any indication). When the water is calm, however, there are plenty of good opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling thanks to the offshore reef that provides protection for swimmers during the low surf season. Best of all, this beach is hardly ever crowded.

Tunnels Beach

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Located on the north shore of Kauai, Tunnels Beach (also known as Makua Beach) has something for everyone. The horseshoe-shaped outer reef offshore is great for intermediate or advanced swimmers while the protected shallow spots along the shore are better for beginners. As the name implies, the inner reef contains a number of caves and tunnels popular with scuba divers and free divers (just be sure not to disturb the coral). Just like the other Hawaiian islands, Kauai’s north shore sees larger swells in the winter, and Tunnels is no exception.

Hideaways Beach

3bugsmom / Getty Images

Officially known as Pali Ke Kua Beach, Hideaways certainly got its nickname for a good reason. Getting here will require a hike down a steep trail from the St. Regis Resort on the north shore of Kauai in Princeville. Only accessible by foot, the journey means that the beach isn’t often busy, so you might just end up with your own private oasis. When conditions are good, the beautiful blue water with deep pockets of reef here is snorkeling perfection.

Right next door to the trailhead for the famous Kalalau Trail and the gateway to Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park , Ke’e Beach houses a barrier reef full of Hawaiian fish, turtles, and even mellow white-tipped reef sharks. The outer reef is best saved for more advanced snorkelers who have experience with Kauai’s currents, but there is also a smaller protected shallow lagoon area perfect for children or beginners.

Nualolo Kai

photo75 / Getty Images

One of the best snorkeling spots on the island is also one of the least accessible. Located along the majestic Na Pali Coast , Nualolo Kai can only be entered by boat (anchor only, no beach landing allowed) thanks to the 2,000-foot Na Pali cliffs. Adventurers can opt for a kayak rental or book a snorkel tour with a boating company in order to experience this gorgeous snorkel site.

10 Best Kauai Waterfalls: how to see them & where to swim

The rugged and unspoiled island of Kauai is a paradise for nature lovers. In addition to lush rainforests, sprawling canyons, and jagged coastal cliffs, the island is also home to quite a few dramatic waterfalls.

Some can be easily reached by car (with a convenient parking area), which is great for pit stops and quick visits. However, others require a bit more effort to reach, whether it’s a hike through the jungle, a kayak expedition up a river, or a helicopter ride over the valley.

Whatever you’re looking for, Kauai has a waterfall that is guaranteed to make your trip to the Garden Isle memorable!

Here are our favorite waterfalls and how to see them: We love going to Secret Falls on this Wailua River Kayak tour as this is the best waterfall for swimming! If you’re looking for stunning hikes with waterfall rewards be sure to check out our friend Jeremiah’s hiking tours . He can take you all over the island, including to lesser-known falls! If you do anything while you’re visiting Kauai, make sure you see the Napali Coast by boat . This coastline is breathtaking by itself and it has several waterfalls! To my hardcore waterfall and/or Jurassic Park lovers, hop on this helicopter tour to see the unbelievable 400ft Manawaiopuna Falls (aka Jurassic Falls), and ask about landing at the base!

Kauai Waterfall FAQs

What is the best waterfall for swimming in kauai.

If you want to swim in a waterfall, book a tour to visit Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). It’s accessible by a 2-mile kayak trip and a 1.5-mile jungle trek, but the pools are beautiful and worth the effort.

What are the most accessible waterfalls to visit on Kauai?

You don’t have to take a full-day hiking trip to see some of Kauai’s best waterfalls. Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls, and Red Dirt Falls are all easily accessible by car. You can park on the side of the road and take a few steps to the waterfall viewpoint. Read on for more details on these three Kauai waterfalls.

What Kauai Waterfalls are accessible only with a tour?

Kauai is a wild and rugged place, with 70% of the island inaccessible by car. Therefore, several waterfalls, including many on the Napali Coast, can only be accessed with a licensed tour guide (either by boat, helicopter, or plane).

Besides the ones along the Napali Coast, several other waterfalls are remote or situated on private lands. For example, Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Falls) can only be reached via helicopter, while Kahili Falls must be visited with a licensed guide.

Swimming Safely at the Best Kauai Waterfalls

Before you make the trip to one of the best Kauai waterfalls, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are a couple of questions about swimming and exploring waterfalls in Hawaii that we have received over the years.

Leptospirosis in Kauai Waterfalls

Leptospirosis is a rare but serious bacterial disease that can be picked up by swimming in contaminated water in a waterfall. However, we’ve spent years in Hawaii, swimming in different streams and rivers on all the islands, and have never caught anything. We’ve also talked with tour guides, swapped stories with locals, and never heard of anyone having leptospirosis.

But to be on the safe side, you should avoid drinking the water or swimming in waterfalls with open cuts. If you are experiencing symptoms of leptospirosis (muscle aches, fever, jaundice, vomiting, etc.), seek medical care immediately.

Kauai waterfalls warning signs

Waterfall Safety

Swimming in Kauai waterfalls does not come without its risks. Even in busy places where swimming is allowed, you should always exercise extreme caution if you plan to go for a dip.

Here are a couple of safety tips to keep in mind when swimming in a waterfall:

  • Avoid swimming or standing directly under the falling water. While this is the most thrilling part of swimming in a waterfall, there is a risk that rocks and other debris can fall without warning.
  • If you want to jump into the pool, check the swimming hole for any rocks beforehand. If you aren’t sure of where to jump in and land safely, do not risk it.
  • Waterfall conditions can change without warning. Although it may be sunny where you plan to swim, it can storm or rain further up the mountain. This could cause flash floods that can make swimming more dangerous. Therefore, check the weather conditions, especially during the wet season in the winter, before going in. If any flash flood warnings are issued, steer clear.
  • Do not climb up on the rock face or along the ridge of a waterfall, as slipping, tripping, or falling can be very dangerous!

Visiting other islands, too? Don’t miss those waterfalls: Maui Waterfalls Big Island Waterfalls Oahu Waterfalls

1. Wailua Falls

Kauai Waterfalls Wailua Falls

If you’ve ever seen the TV show Fantasy Island (or at least the opening credits ), you’ll recognize Wailua Falls. It can look strikingly different depending on how much water cascades down when you visit.

This stunning waterfall is located in Wailua River State Park, just a short 4-mile drive up Route 583 from Lihue. And because the overlook is right on the road (no hiking required!), it’s worth the short detour if you’re near Lihue.

The views of the falls are pretty spectacular, although don’t hop over the railing to trek down to the pool. While some people do this to go swimming, trespassing causes erosion, and this is not a safe place to swim. Please respect the closed-off area and the ‘aina (land) by staying at the observation area.

Parking at Wailua Falls is relatively easy, as a medium-sized parking lot is at the end of the road. It can fill up quickly, but as it’s a quick stopover, people don’t usually stay here for too long.

  • Waterfall height: 80 feet (which is heavily debated as some claim its height is 173 feet)
  • Swimming Hole: No
  • Restrooms: No
  • Ease of Access: Easy
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly by the road
  • Directions to Parking: Click here

2. Opaekaa Falls near Kapa’a

Kauai Waterfalls - Opaekaa Falls view point.

Opaekaa Falls is one of those things you have to see when visiting Kapa’a and the eastern side of Kauai. You can park at the wayside park and walk to the observation platform for pictures. The park and the observation area make this one of the most accessible waterfalls on the island. On the downside, you’re a reasonable distance from the falls, so this isn’t a spot to hike or swim.

While parked at the wayside park, you can visit the Wailua River Overlook for stunning views of the Wailua River. There are also picnic tables and restrooms so that you can relax here.

Or, drive back down the mountain about a quarter of a mile to the sacred Poliahu Heiau (temple).

Check out the video below for views of this waterfall, and more to do around Kapa’a and things to do in Poipu !

  • Waterfall height: 151 feet
  • Restrooms: Yes
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly in the parking lot

3. Secret Falls on Wailua River

Getting to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) can be quite an adventure. It’s located on the Wailua River and only accessible from the water! After a two-mile trek up the Class 0 river, you’ll also need to hike through the jungle for roughly 1.5 miles to reach the falls. It’s a moderate hike, which can be muddy sometimes, but our 4-year-old did it and loved exploring the jungle trail.

While you can rent a kayak for this trip alone, we strongly suggest booking a local guide, as they take care of everything. We did this kayak, hiking, and waterfall swim guided tour and had a blast as it combined three different activities on one trip. You can check out the video of our experience below!

But despite its name, this waterfall is anything but secret. It’s one of the more popular waterfalls on Kauai, so be prepared to share the swimming hole with others. But while it can be crowded, it’s still a beautiful place to swim and cool off after your jungle trek!

After your return, stay for the Smith Family Luau to keep the festivities going! You’ll be treated to a gourmet buffet dinner, an exhilarating show, and a narrated tram ride across the sacred Wailua River Valley.

  • Waterfall height: 120 feet
  • Swimming Hole: Yes
  • Cost: Free to visit, but you must rent kayak equipment or go with a tour
  • Ease of Access: Moderate
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 2-mile kayak and 1.5-mile hike

Uluwehi Falls kauai waterfall hike

4. Hanakapiʻai Falls on the Napali Coast

If you’re up for a challenge, then make sure to add a hike to Hanakapiʻai Falls to your Kauai itinerary! This beautiful 300-foot waterfall is located in Haʻena State Park on the rugged Napali Coast, which is easily one of the most scenic parts of the island. But since it’s part of a state park, a permit is required to visit.

I visited this waterfall in my 20s, doing the entire 22-mile out-and-back Kalalau Trail. However, you can reach the falls with a shorter and more manageable 8-mile hike from the start of the trail. This route takes you past the famous Hanakapiʻai Beach and then inland, where you will hike to the falls.

The trail is somewhat difficult because it crosses unmaintained and rocky terrain. We also don’t suggest hiking in the winter, as falling rocks and flash floods can make the journey dangerous. Being on the beach is also not advised during this time due to the high surf, rogue waves, and strong currents.

  • Waterfall height: 300 feet
  • Cost: $5 (entry permit), $10 (parking), $40 (shuttle + entry)
  • Ease of Access: Difficult
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 2 miles

5. Napali Coast Waterfalls

Kauai Waterfalls along the Napali Coast

In our opinion, the best Kauai waterfalls can be found along the Napali Coast. But as we mentioned earlier, 70% of Kauai is inaccessible by car, so you’ll need to be prepared to do some adventuring if you want to go waterfall chasing in this area.

Hiking the Kalalau Trail can lead to some beautiful falls and pools, but it’s long, steep, and not very beginner—or family-friendly. You can always book a helicopter or airplane tour instead, but these can be quite expensive.

We think the best (and cheapest) way to see the waterfalls on the Napali coast is with a boat tour. The views of the cliffs are jaw-droppingly beautiful from the water, and you’ll be able to get close to many of the falls (some boats will even dip their bow under them so you can get wet!).

Head out on one of our favorite Napali Coast Tours to check out the waterfalls below:

  • Paaiki Falls
  • Ho’ole’a Falls
  • Waiahuakua Fall (although this depends on tide conditions. Access is also possible by booking a rafting tour).
  • Pirates Cave Waterfall (also accessible on a rafting tour)

6. Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Falls)

The 400-foot Manawaiopuna Falls is one of the most stunning sights in Kauai. As its name implies, it was used for several scenes in the Jurassic Park films, making it a must-see for nature lovers and movie buffs alike.

Movie buffs will love these tours: Kauai Movie and TV Tour to Scenic Hanalei Waterfall Triple Trail UTV Expedition (private waterfall) Ultimate Kauai Off-Road Ranch Tour

The only way to visit Manawaiopuna Falls is on a local Kauai helicopter tour , as it’s completely inaccessible by foot. Not only will you get to see the falls from above, but many tours will also land at the base so that you can explore the area up close.

  • Waterfall height: 400 feet
  • Cost: Requires helicopter tour
  • Ease of Access: Difficult (only because you have to book a helicopter tour!)
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Direct access from helicopter

7. Mountain Tubing Adventure Down a Waterfall

best snorkeling tour kauai

If you’re looking for a fun way to see Kauai, this mountain tubing experience is it! This adventure includes a ride through the jungle with an entertaining guide and a tube float down a 100-year-old, hand-dug plantation canal system. You’ll navigate through dark tunnels and down little waterfalls, all while seeing the beautiful, lush landscapes of the Kauai countryside.

We loved this tour (check out the video below of our adventure ), because it’s incredibly scenic and a unique way to experience Kauai. But as one of the more popular activities on the island, you’ll want to book far in advance as spots can fill up quickly.

At just 6 to 8 feet in height, Red Dirt Waterfall is far from the largest Kauai waterfall. But the vibrant red soil the stream flows down makes it one of the most unique!

Red dirt Kauai waterfalls

The fall is in Waimea Canyon State Park near the mile 23 marker. You can park your car on the side to get a closer look, but you likely won’t be spending too much time here. But it’s worth a quick stop if you’re visiting the park.

  • Waterfall height: 6 to 8 feet
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly off the road

9. Waipoo Falls in Waimea Canyon

There are two different ways to see Waipoo Falls in Waimea Canyon . The easiest is from one of the many lookouts along Hawaii 550, like the Waimea Canyon Lookout and the Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout. The falls are off in the distance, but you’ll get to see sprawling views of the entire canyon as well.

Waimea Canyon Kauai waterfalls

Another option is to hike the Waipoo Falls Trail. This 2-mile trail takes you along the canyon rim to the top of the waterfall. You won’t have a direct view because you are technically on top of the falls, but the hike is still lovely and doable for beginners or families! If you want a full view of the waterfall, you’re better off driving to one of the above lookouts.

  • Waterfall height: 800 feet
  • Cost: $5 per person entry and $10 park for Waimea Canyon State Park
  • Ease of Access: Easy to Moderate
  • Directions to Parking: Waimea Canyon Lookout or Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout

10. Ho’opi’i Falls

The hike to Ho’opi’i Falls is a short but scenic adventure for those looking for a fun swimming hole. There are two falls here – the upper and lower falls. The trail takes you to the upper falls first, but you can continue for another 15 to 20 minutes to see the lower falls (although be extra careful as the trek is quite steep and slippery if it has been raining). For this reason, we’d rate this hike as moderate, although we did it with our 3-year-old and were fine.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find a nice swimming area! Or if you’d rather stay at the upper falls, you’ll also find a pool for swimming there.

The trailhead can be difficult to find, as parking is in a residential area. Respect the posted signs and do not park in front of a driveway! And don’t forget your eco-friendly bug spray (along with your other travel necessities ), as mosquitos are quite a bit of a problem here.

  • Waterfall height: 30 feet
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 1.8 miles

9 Best Beaches in Kauai for swimming, snorkeling and Beauty

W hen you close your eyes and imagine the picture-perfect beach, you’re probably imagining something that looks a whole lot like the beaches in Kauai. All around the coastline of this small Hawaiian island, there is a spectacular after spectacular beach on the island.

With stunning backdrops of rainforest, cliffs, and surf breaks that people come from around the world to ride, plus diverse and striking sea life, it’s no wonder travelers flock to Kauai . No matter where you stay in the southern part of Poipu or the northern part of Princeville, there are stunning beaches all around and below I am sharing my personal favorite best beaches in Kauai.

Best Beaches in Kauai

In addition to surfing, you can do just about any water activity, from swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and cliff jumping for the fearless. Check out these nine breathtaking beaches of Kauai that are suitable for families to adventure seekers.

Poipu Beach

The beautiful Poipu Beach — the name meaning “to be completely covered” in Hawaiian — is on the south of Kauai and is thought to be by many as one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii. One part of the island is protected by rocks and has lifeguards on duty, so it’s an excellent option for families.

Facilities at the beach include restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and parking. There are also a lot of restaurants nearby. The beach is popular with swimmers but also great for boogie boarding, surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. There is plenty of shade on the beach as well as some grassy areas for your choice of preferred sunbathing or not.

There are also some great wildlife spotting opportunities, and monk seals often nap on the rocks which connect the two beaches that makeup Poipu Beach. If you wait around for sunset and into the evening, you might also be able to spot some sea turtles. Anytime you have wildlife encounters at the beach on the sand or water, be careful and stay a reasonable distance from the marine life.

Best Beaches in Kauai for Swimming

Hanalei bay beach.

Hanalei Bay Beach is a crescent pristine stretch of sand on the north shore. It sits at the mouth of the Hanalei River and in front of Black Pot Beach Park, which is popular for camping. On the other end of the spectrum, the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Resort, one of the top all-inclusive resorts in Kauai , is just nearby for a much fancier stay option.

With its long stretch of sand and fairly protected waters, this bay is super popular amongst families with kids. This means that if you’re looking for something quiet and tranquil this might not be the perfect spot for you.

However, the area is undeniably beautiful, with clear water and a green, rugged mountainous backdrop. It’s so picture-perfect that it’s been the set for some Hollywood hits like South Pacific and The Descendants.

As well as a popular spot for families, Hanalei Bay Beach is also one of the best spots for surfing, and those looking to go bodyboarding, paddling, or kayaking will also have a great time.

There aren’t any lifeguards on duty, but there are restrooms, showers, and picnic tables.

Lydgate Beach

Lydgate Beach is quite a unique spot because the waters by the beach are protected from the open ocean by a lava rock wall. This creates a natural reef, and so the waters attract a lot of colorful tropical fish. Since the wall protects the bay, the waves are calm, making for a relaxing and generally safe snorkeling and swimming experience.

There are also even smaller pools sectioned off by the same rock walls, which are perfect for younger kids to splash around in. Despite the quiet waters, there is still a lifeguard on the beach for added safety. Lydgate Beach offers restrooms, showers, and changing rooms, as well as picnic tables.

This beach is on the east of the island, making it a great place to watch the sunrise. Lydgate is close to the Wailua River and as well as being great for swimming and snorkeling. The area outside of the rock reef is perfect for windsurfing and bodyboarding.

Kealia Beach

Though only half a mile, Kealia Beach can be more or less divided into two halves. The north end of the beach has more protection, and thus much calmer waters, so it is better for swimming.

At the southern end of the beach, the surf break is bigger so it’s popular for experienced surfers as well as a buzzing area for surf schools. It’s a good area to try out the sport for the first time or polish up your skills.

Kealia Beach is really easy to access from the roads and has a lot of parking. The Kapaa Bike Path, which is in total about 4.5 miles long and runs along the coastline, goes right past the beach.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of natural shade, so you’ll want to bring an umbrella or sunscreen for sun protection. You will find Kealia Beach on the east side of the island, which is famous for having fairly warm waters.

Best Snorkeling Beaches in Kauai

Tunnels beach.

Tunnels Beach in Northern Kauai is also referred to as Makua Beach, but its English name comes from the lava tubes that run through the reefs offshore. Those reefs are the reason why this is often considered the best spot on Kauai to snorkel and dive if not one of the best spots in the whole world. You’ll just have to see it to make up your mind on that.

The best snorkeling conditions are in summer when the waves are quieter, and this is also a good time for swimming. The area is also popular for wind and kite surfing. Plus it’s a great spot from which to catch a sunset or to walk along the two miles of sand.

It’s an undeniably gorgeous location at all hours of the day. There aren’t a lot of facilities here other than picnic tables, but there are lifeguards. There’s also a parking lot, but if you’re driving you’ll need to book a Haena State Park parking pass in advance as they sell out.

Anini Beach

Anini Beach is on Kauai’s north shore, but unlike a lot of the other Kauai north shore beaches, the water here is actually fairly warm, especially in the shallows. Since the beach is protected by a large reef, the water remains fairly calm and swimmable year-round, except for certain times in the winter.

It’s important to stay vigilant as there are no lifeguards, and if you stray far from shore or into deeper waters you can be subject to dangerous rips caused by channels going through the reef.

Within that safer area at Anini Beach, snorkeling is super popular, and because of the big reef, there is a lot of diverse sea life. You might be lucky enough to spot sea turtles, triggerfish, or a variety of other tropical fish. In addition to snorkeling, windsurfing, and kiteboarding are all popular activities here.

Anini Beach has all the same types of facilities as other places. There is also a boat launch. The two miles of beach also has a lot of natural shade so no beach umbrella is needed.

Beautiful Kauai Beaches With Great Views

Kalihiwai beach.

Kalihiwai Beach is a lovely secluded spot on Kauai’s north coast. It sits within the rainforest with ironwood trees and lava cliffs as the backdrop to its pristine white sands.

Unfortunately, this beach is not always the best option for swimming, especially in winter when the water can be rough and fairly dangerous for weak swimmers. There is a very popular surf break, so if you’re a keen surfer, this is a good beach to visit. You can also always stop by to watch the locals catch waves.

Even though the ocean surf can be rough, this can still be an excellent option to get in the water as there is a river that runs along the west end of the beach. You can pop a kayak or a SUP board in and head upstream. About a mile paddle will get you to a beautiful waterfall.

There is no lifeguard on the beach and just a porta potty for public use.

Polihale Beach

Polihale Beach is a beautiful beach on the west coast of Kauai. It’s accessible by a rough dirt road that is five miles long. It’s not recommended to try to go down this road with anything other than an all-terrain vehicle, and if there are heavy rains the road will flood and wash out.

However, if you can make the journey, you’ll be treated to a stunning long stretch of white sand with an otherworldly backdrop of dunes. The entire beach is about 15 miles long making it an excellent spot for beach walking.

There is no lifeguard so swimming can be quite dangerous. Even though the water may look calm from the shore, swimming is generally not advised as there are strong rips with no protection from the open ocean.

Instead, enjoy beautiful sunsets on this westerly point from the safety of the sand. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a seal enjoying the beach alongside you. Fishing is a pretty popular thing to do here, and you can use the restrooms and showers as you need.

Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach was supposedly named for a ship that has disappeared over the years. Either slowly and quietly removed or gradually swept farther out to see or degraded by the waves.

Because of its looks and the myriad of things you can do here, it’s one of the best beaches on Kauai and can sometimes get fairly crowded. There are all types of beach facilities, including restrooms, showers, and picnic tables.

The surf can sometimes be a bit strong, so it’s recommended only for stronger swimmers. It’s also a great spot for strong surfers and boogie boarders, with waves routinely crashing down on the shore.

The beach is very popular for its cliff jumping . If you’re looking out to sea, the cliff jump is to the left end of the beach and is about 40 feet high. Also popular here is the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail which starts right on Shipwreck Beach and is an out-and-back trail , two miles each way. The trailhead can be found at the southeast corner of Shipwreck Beach.
